Reward our best Local business awards launched By SUE PATERICK
IT’S time to celebrate all local business – big and small. To encourage and reward local businesses for their hard work and commitment to their communities, the Macleay Valley Business Chamber and the Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce are once again holding their annual Business Awards. The Coastline Credit Union presented the Macleay Valley Business Awards at a cocktail party on Tuesday evening, where guests met the generous local sponsors. While the Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce launch the Holiday Coast Credit Union Business Awards today (Thursday June 1) at a luncheon at the Port Macquarie Panthers. Macleay Valley Business Chamber Executive Officer, Sonia Fingleton, said Tuesday’s launch was a way to celebrate the sponsors because without them the Business Awards would not be possible. “There has been record sponsorship this year and Coastline Credit Union has committed to the Business Awards for three years,” she said. “Leading businesses in the community have contributed financially to allow other local businesses to shine.” • Continued Page 3

Kids and their parents enjoy the Hide and Seek Cinema experience, which combines a treasure hunt and a good movie
New movie adventure By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE world’s only Hide and Seek Cinema is coming to the Mid North Coast. When Tim Maddren, a former Hi-5 member, and his wife, Steph, decided to combine their love for cinema and treasure hunts, the Hide and Seek Cinema was born. “We did it for the first time in Sydney and as far as I know, we are the first ones in the world to do it,” said Tim. “We thought why not do a treasure hunt and hide something that is ridiculous that everyone thinks they can find, like a cinema.” The Sydney event started with an X marked in a shopping centre, and from there the treasure hunters were on their way. “They found a bus in an alleyway and got on the bus which had pirate music playing and someone put pirate hats on all the guests,” said Tim. “The bus then drove 10 minutes into the bush where it was hijacked by a whole lot of pirates and the pirates then lined them all up and marched them into a sandstone amphitheatre quarry. “We made it look like the Lost Boys’ den from Peter Pan, and then we had buried treasure so people could dig up treasure to keep them occupied. “We had this big reveal where we had a

sail that was pulled, and cut out of the sail was a figure of a boy - the iconic image from the movie Hook where Robin Williams cuts his shadow out from a sail and floats through. And then we played the movie Hook.” Tim and Steph love cinema and theatre so much that they started a production company called Got Ya Back Productions and Tim is even playing Peter Pan in a production. “My wife and I have a little production company,” said Tim. “And because we are in a regional area we have been given the rights to movies that I think would be a lot harder to get if we were in the city. “So it’s actually really cool for us because we can get really good movies here. “We want to do more Hide and Seek Cinemas and we want to find quirky and strange venues and places to have them, places that aren’t commonly used and really have a bit of fun with it.” The kids won’t be the only ones enjoying this event as the parents will also get a kick out of revisiting some of their favourite movies. “This is a family event and we make sure that the movies are family orientated,” said Tim. “The aim with the movies is not to find the latest Pixar film, because we find that kids replay those movies over and over again. “We want to find movies that mean something

to the parents and the parents can enjoy. “Like Hook, both the parents and the kids enjoyed it. “I feel with a lot of the more recent movies, because they get played so much, like Frozen, the kids would be happy, but the parents wouldn’t be. “We love cinema and we want to get movies that are unique and that people might not have seen.” Tim said there was every reason for the concept to be a local hit. “We know how to make it work, the (Port Macquarie-Hastings) Council have been great,” he said. “We want to set it up so that the only place it happens is Port Macquarie. It will be great for summer. “We are keeping this first one nice and small so it means everyone has fun, because you don’t want a million people on a treasure hunt.” The Hide and Seek Cinema event will take place on May 13 in the Lake Cathie region. Tickets are $25 for adults, $16 for children, and $20 for members. For more information and where to purchase tickets visit http://www.glasshouse.org.au/ Whats-On/Hide-and-Seek-Cinema-May-2017 and also check out the Hide and Seek Cinema website at http://hideandseekcinema.com.au
• From Page 1 Entries to nominate your own business or a Macleay Valley Business that offers exemplary service and products will open in mid-May. Sonia said the Awards encourage local businesses to look back on their performance over the past year and also look forward with professional business planning. “It’s a wonderful time to stop, reflect, network and plan, and a great time to gain recognition in their local area,” she explained. This is the second year the Macleay Valley Business Chamber has orgainsed the region’s Business Awards. Sonia said it was a way the Chamber could help promote growth and prosperity for the region. Finalists will be announced at a Gala Award Dinner on Saturday July 8 at the Kempsey Macleay RSL Club. The Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce 2017 Hall of Fame Inductees will be announced at today’s launch as well as guest speakers and a walk through the 2017 Business Awards process. Anthony Sarks from Ricardoes Tomatoes and one of the 2013 Hall of Fame Inductees and Alistair Flower from Settlers Inn and 2016 Winner of Hotel and Clubs Local Industry Award, will both discuss their amazing business and awards journey. According to the Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce’s Events and Marketing Officer, Letitia Kimmarley, she says Business Awards celebrate the growth and success of businesses in the Greater Port Macquarie region. “The Business Awards are a celebration of business in the local area and we want them to tell us how good they are,” she said. There are two sections in the Awards: Industry and Business Excellence. Nominations can be made online on www. portchamber.com.au and entries close on Wednesday July 12. Voting starts on Wednesday June 28. You can vote online or get a hard copy voting form from the Holiday Coast Credit Union, a platinum sponsor of the Business Awards for the next three years. Important issues up before Council I ATTENDED an interesting Council meeting on April 19 when a number of important agenda items were discussed. Three of these were: A property owner has requested that a property in Beach Road, Bonny Hills be rezoned as residential. The recommendation from Council was to not support this but that it may be possible to change the zoning to part residential and part environment protection. The owner has started clearing the site of trees which are koala habitat. Speakers from Bonny Hills were against any rezoning to residential and condemned the owner for clearing the trees and destroying koala habitat. The owner (a company) claims that it is allowed to do so as the land is zoned “agricultural”. Speakers were quite emotional and
Airport expansion I REFER to the letter by Ron Walesby in regard to the Kempsey airport expansion and agree wholeheartedly with his comments not to make ”conclusions based on supposition or misinformation. had to be politely redirected by the Mayor to address themselves to the agenda item. A further report is to be prepared. Council has a goal to source 100 per cent of its electricity from renewables by 2027. Former Councillor Jamie Harrison, owner of a solar energy business, addressed the Council on this, saying that it was an incredibly short time to implement this strategy. Councillor Levido moved an amendment to defer a decision so that Councillors could participate in a workshop to gain further understanding and clarity on the issue. He said it would be miraculous if, in the next 10 years, something would change so dramatically to allow Council to achieve this objective.
The amendment was passed, with Councillors Intemann and Alley dissenting (they believed enough information was available and no deferral was necessary.) The investment report for the month was put forward for noting by Councillors. Revised income from investments is expected to be $6,690,179 on invested funds of $241 million. This gives a return of 2.78 per cent per year. According to the report, $214 million is held in reserves, 70 per cent of which may legally only be used for the purpose for which they were collected (from property developers), e.g. water and sewer. The remaining 30 per cent of reserves are predominantly held for specific purposes, e.g. the development of the
airport, or to fund projects which have already been commenced. Councillor Levido proposed an amendment which would effectively result in the Council employing independent experts to review the composition of, and restrictions relating to, these reserves. He said that there had been much talk in the community about the amount of investments (reserves) held by the Council and questions as to why they were not being used for much needed infrastructure and improvements. The amendment passed unanimously and one would hope that a way can be found to legally release these reserves. John Oxley Port Macquarie

TO the mother of the young boy and teenage daughter shopping in a large store in Port*. The boy found a shopping bag from a specialist children’s shop** hanging from a display stand. The boy showed the contents to his mother and they looked inside. The mother then encouraged her teenage daughter to put it in her bag. It was a good opportunity for the child to be shown an example of honesty – but it was a lost cause. I did report it to a salesperson but they were unable to act because it did not involve theft from their stock. * TARGET PORT CENTRAL ** SMIGGLES

THIS week I’ve reflected on a few things in my life while remembering my mum who passed away May 1, 2002. There’s been a lot to reflect on. Believe me – I’ve packed quite a bit into my last 15 years! In that time, I have made a transition from 30 years in the hospitality and retail industries and I somehow fell into ‘newspaper land’ and the world of deadlines. Sort of like Alice. Most of you are aware that I am recently separated (6 months) and life has been a bit of a rollercoaster and merry-go-round combination for me. I’ve either felt dizzy or overwhelmed with a couple of moments of calm in between. And this is where my mum and deadlines come together. The day she passed away, I had my first ever Business Law exam at Uni, I sat the exam and passed with flying colours. That’s what she wanted. Before she died, mum made me promise I would stay strong, keep going, follow my dreams and never give up. I do that to the best of my ability. So, to honour my mum, I’ve remained as strong as humanly possible, kept going day in day out so I can continue to follow my dreams and I set myself a deadline around New Year to have myself back on track, emotionally and mentally by May 1. Thanks mum, you’ve inspired me. No matter what - I won’t be giving up!

Reconnect with nature “
Often modern people feel disconnected with the earth and can feel like strangers in a way, whereas say, Indigenous people feel a spiritual connection
“
By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC HERE’S your chance to reconnect with nature at an upcoming workshop. Author, filmmaker, lecturer, activist, and founder of the Rainforest Information Centre, John Seed, is welcoming people to his latest workshop ‘Deep Ecology’ in Crescent Head. “The workshop is about a series of processes where we learn how to deepen our sense of connectedness with the earth,” said Mr Seed. “Often modern people feel disconnected with the earth and can feel like strangers in a way, whereas say, Indigenous people feel a spiritual connection with the Earth and with nature.” John Seed has devoted his life to planet Earth and its beings and through that has received the Order of Australia Medal (OAM), has taken on the Rainforest Information Centre’s endangered species campaign, and has made the film ‘On the Brink’ with David Attenborough, David Suzuki, Olivia NewtonJohn and Jack Thompson. Mr Seed has also conducted a 30-lecture tour of India, sponsored by the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs … and much more. However, it’s the study of deep ecology that has Mr Seed talking. “In many ways what we do on the workshop weekend is parallel to the kind of rituals and ceremonies that all indigenous societies practice as a way of making sure that the community remembers who they are,” Mr Seed said. “Every other culture, apart form us modernists, have regular events that remind the
community of who we really are under the social identity.” Mr Seed has given presentations previously talks around the Mid North Coast and has worked closely with the Port Macquarie Climate Action Group. He says his most important message is simple - get out into the fresh air. “All of us suffer form a sense of disconnection with the earth,” he says. “We might know intellectually that we are a part of the earth - the food that I eat comes from the earth and the water I drink - but we don’t actually experience ourselves in that way. We don’t feel that sense of intimacy with the earth. “This workshop explores that, but there’s also other ways to reconnect outside this workshop, which is to actually spend time out in nature and allow the business of our social city/town life to drop away and feel ourselves as part of nature again.” The ‘Deep Ecology’ workshop with John Seed will take place on Saturday, May 20, from 9am-7pm and Sunday, May 21, from 9am-4pm at the Goolawah Landsharing Co-op, off Maria River Rd, Crescent Head. Camping is available and billets can be arranged on request. The workshop costs $100-$200, whatever you can afford, and all proceeds will be donated to Energy Forever, community solar, and nesting boxes for Goolawah. For Bookings email johnseed1@ozemail. com.au This workshop is supported by The Nature School and Port Macqaurie Hastings Sustainability Network.

Macleay’s a perfect picture to snappers By SUE PATERICK FOR 62 years avid photographers from a local club have travelled throughout the Macleay Valley’s natural playground taking great images of its iconic wonders from the bush to the beach. Spoilt for choice, members of the Kempsey Macleay RSL Photographic Club meet monthly to share their love of photography and to learn how to take better pictures. “By joining a photography club you will improve your images and learn new techniques,” said President Gai Southwell. Each month club members have a set subject to capture with that perfect shot and in May it is dilapidated buildings. Members also take several photographs of any topic and one in black and white Gai explained that members then submit their images on a USB stick and all the photographs are sent to judges around NSW. “And despite a number of people taking the same scene it seems that every person has taken a different angle or perspective so each image is different,” she said. The following month members receive feedback and a point score for each submitted image that is then show on a screen. “Apart from taking photographs, the benefit of the club is talking about our photographs and discussing how to improve them,” Gai added. At year’s end the photographic club holds a presentation to give out trophies to members who have taken the most stunning photographs. The club also has regular outings within the Macleay and family members are invited along. They travel to the region’s stunning beaches, visit its historic buildings, its tree-covered mountains, its wide river and many creeks, to local markets and everywhere in between. Workshops are also held regularly throughout the year to show members how to

use their cameras properly and how to navigate Photoshop. “Being a member of the photographic club has changed how I view everyday items, and once you notice depth of field and composition you’ll notice it everywhere,” Gai said. “It has ‘upskilled’ me and provided support and encouragement.” Gai also enjoys sharing her love of photography with a circle of like-minded people who happily share their knowledge to help everyone gain the best out of their camera skills. “It’s a hobby or a passion that anyone of any age can participate in as long as you can hold a camera,” she said. “I’ve encouraged my grandchildren to take
photographs too and they love it as much as I do.” When the photographic club first formed back in 1955 it was called the Kempsey Camera Club. One of its founding members, Wilga Hughes, is still a member and still loves taking photographs. Last year the club hosted the 40th Northern Zone of Photographic Clubs Convention, which Gai said was hugely successful. She thanked the Kempsey Macleay RSL for its continued support and the local business community who got behind the club for the convention and donated loads of prizes. Before the convention the photographic club held an exhibition and hopes to hold another one

this year. The club also enters their photographs in the annual Kempsey Show and assists the Show Committee each year. The Kempsey Macleay RSL Photographic Club meets on the second Thursday of each month at the RSL Club from 7.30pm in the function room. Membership costs just $25 per year but you do have to be a member of the RSL Club as well. There are currently 25 members with different brand cameras from ‘point and shoot’ to expensive SLRs. The photographic club is always looking for new members of any skill level so if you love a good photograph then come along to the next meeting. To entice would-be shutterbugs, the club would like to offer Your Local Independent readers the opportunity to win a $50 voucher from the BigW Photolab. Just email your favourite photograph to the Kempsey Macleay RSL Photographic Club on gai2013@hotmail.com with your name, phone contact and title of your photo entries. The competition closes on Tuesday, May 30 and the winner will be selected at the club’s June meeting and will be notified by phone. Markets offer great day out By SUE PATERICK
LIVE music echoes across the dark and reflective Macleay River from the colourful and lively Kempsey Riverside Markets and the smell of brewing coffee is irresistible. Held on the first Saturday of each month, the next market will be held this Saturday (May 6) at Kempsey’s leafy Riverside Park. Over 100 stalls are booked in again this month including loads of exciting new stallholders, all selling something wonderful
just in time for Mother’s Day. The variety is spectacular and the buzz of the friendly crowd brings a smile to your face. It’s a place where people meet and catch up to stock up on organic veggies, handmade soap, plants, cakes, fruit, crystals, wind chimes, jewellery and so much more. Stalls include artisan breads, gourmet foodie delights like Buffalo Gelato, smoked meats, fermented condiments, jams, pickles, relishes, cordials, beautiful hand-crafted items, natural skin care, fragrances and candles.
“You’ll also find plenty of fresh and organic produce at the market too, straight out of our very own Macleay Valley Food Bowl and the Mid North Coast region such as fruit, vegetables, honey, garlic, meats and cheeses,” said Market Coordinator Belinda Fowler. “Adding to the variety of food on offer this month, local chef Lloyd Newel will cook up a storm incorporating some of our delicious local produce.” Performing on the main stage this May are Klepta Klezm, a talented world-music band
from the Macleay Valley. The amazing busker, Benje Travis, will also be performing his original Acoustic Earth and Roots music. For the children there is a jumping castle, sand activities, face painting, henna and spray tattoos. “It’s a top day out for children,” Belinda said. “So come on down and shop up a storm, then relax by the river, enjoy a delicious lunch and take it all in.”

Some taking us for a ride with welfare
THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker
Federal Member for Cowper
IN my experience, Australians are a generous bunch. We tend to be willing to support people who are battling, either directly with personal donations or indirectly through the tax and welfare system. But we really hate it when our generosity is abused. Last year, more than 33,000 people who were on Newstart Allowance (sometimes referred to as ‘the dole’) told Centrelink they couldn’t be bothered turning up for one or more job interviews that had been arranged for them. That’s a pretty good indication these people are taking us for a ride and have absolutely no intention of finding work or making an effort to get off welfare. That sort of attitude is an insult to the millions of Australians that work hard and pay their share of taxes. Welfare payments come with an obligation – in return for the support offered by your fellow-Australians, you need to work hard to improve your skills, search high and low to find a job, and make an effort to get off welfare and into work. Work is not something to be avoided – work is the starting point for a better life. Employment brings a higher income, better self-esteem, new social networks, more opportunities, and stronger communities. Centrelink already has the power to suspend someone’s Newstart payment if they refuse to attend a job interview, but in 2009 Labor introduced a ‘waiver system’ which can be used to reinstate someone’s suspended payment if they agree to do the right thing the next time. As a result, less than one per cent of people who refused to attend a job interview last year actually had their payment suspended for eight weeks. That means 99 per cent of welfare recipients that refuse to get a job continue to receive payments from the taxpayers, even though they clearly have no intention of finding work. This cannot continue! With our welfare budget now at $160 billion per year, taxpayers cannot continue to be taken for a ride by dole bludgers. Human Service Minister Alan Tudge summed up the situation well when he said: “If you can’t be bothered turning up for a job interview, then don’t expect the taxpayer to continue paying your bills.”

Social housing tenant amnesty SOCIAL Housing Tenant Amnesty: Fraudulent behaviour by social housing tenants is being targeted by the NSW Government with an amnesty being run by the Department of Family and Community Services (FACS). The amnesty, which provides social housing tenants with an opportunity to report undisclosed income, financial assets, property and unauthorised occupants without fear of prosecution, ensures the system is fair for all. This amnesty will weed out the people who are breaking the rules and ensure a fairer housing system that provides our most vulnerable with a stable home to live in. Any FACS Housing or Aboriginal Housing Office tenant that makes a declaration falling under one of our protected amnesty categories will not face consequences. The current amnesty was based on the positive outcomes of similar programs run in 2013 and 2014, which resulted in increased annual revenue of more than $10 million that has been reinvested into public housing. THE Australian Government’s country of origin labelling for food campaign, was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, Barnaby Joyce and Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, Senator Arthur Sinodinos last Sunday. The campaign will appear on TV, radio, in newspapers, digitally and on social media over the coming five weeks. It’s great that the government is getting out there and letting people know what the new labels mean. The new food-labelling system will provide Australian consumers with the clarity they deserve, without imposing an excessive burden on businesses. I look forward to seeing more of these labels on supermarket shelves. The broader country-of-origin labelling reforms came into effect from July 1, 2016 and a two-year transition period is now in place. Since the introduction of the reforms, many foods found on Australian retail shelves have started to include the familiar kangaroo in a triangle logo to show that the food is made, produced or grown in Australia. Imported foods that only undergo minor processing or packaging here cannot claim to be made here or carry the logo. The new labels also include a bar chart indicating the proportion of Australian ingredients.
Sub-editor’s error gave Ava a great line
SYDNEY-Melbourne rivalries continue. I was having a cleanout recently prior to moving into a new house when I came across a news piece from The Age regarding Neil Gillett. I heard an item about Ava Gardner on the radio a few weeks ago. But back to Neil Gillett, about whom I have written before – many years ago. Gillett said: “I have only once written anything worth repeating – and it has been attributed to someone else”. The comment was attributed to Gardner, who was a very popular actress in her day. Let me go back to the beginning. Ava Gardner was a featured actress in the film adaptation of Nevil Shute’s On The Beach (my copy of the book is dated 1959). The book is about the end of the Earth following a nuclear disaster. It contains a lot more than that, but you get the drift. Nevil Shute set the film in Melbourne and American director Stanley Kramer decided Melbourne would be the place to look most like Melbourne. After all, Melbourne was at the end of the earth, unless you included Hobart.
my
LAURIE BARBER
At the time Gillett was working in the Melbourne office of the Sydney Morning Herald and the Sun-Herald. He probably liked to have an occasional dig at Melbourne. He was assigned to do an article about the filming of On The Beach. “I was to interview Miss Gardner and obtain, along with some details about her latest romance, some comments about Melbourne. “Well, there was not much to write. “The film people did not want to be interviewed. “The only information about Miss Gardner was the number of bottles of Scotch and cartons of cigarettes delivered to her flat in South Yarra. “But I managed to concoct some waffle about locations for the film, the stars appearing in it and so forth.
“This article appeared in the Sun-Herald. “Ava Gardner never said ‘On The Beach is a story about the end of the world and Melbourne sure is the right place to film it’. “I wrote a last paragraph and assumed the subs would have a laugh and delete it. “The last paragraph that I wrote said: ‘It has not been confirmed that Miss Gardner as has been confirmed from a usually reliable source if given the chance would seriously consider whether, if she managed to think of it, would like to have put on the record that she said On The Beach is a story about the end of the world and Melbourne sure is the right place to film it’. “But they just thought I was being my usual wordy self. They reduced the preamble to Miss Gardner said and retained the quotation. “Miss Gardner said later that she did not remember saying it, but would take credit for it anyway. “I was the envy of my colleagues for having obtained one of the century’s, that week’s, definitive quotations. “My most sincere regret is that in working for 30 years for newspapers I have only once written anything worth repeating, and it has been attributed to someone else.” lauriebarber.com;lbword@midcoast.com.au

Say ‘No’ to water fluoridation “
Fluoridation of water supplies in Australia remains a highly contentious and emotive issue and there are many citizens opposed to mandatory fluoridation
“
WATER fluoridation is mass medication without consent. From 1964 until September 1991 fluoridation was rejected by our council and a council sponsored plebiscite (71% against fluoridation) endorsed council’s anti-fluoridation position. This vote has never been overturned however fluoridation has since been forced upon our community by the NSW Health Department. There is documentary evidence available that proves water fluoridation is a scam that came into being in the USA during the war effort in the 1940s. By the mid 1950s the policy to fluoridate drinking water supplies had been exported to Australia, Canada and New Zealand – Australia now holds the dubious honour of having the highest national coverage of around 95%. Interestingly, mainland European countries after, trialled programs for 30 years, abandoned water fluoridation for various reasons including no proven long-term dental benefits. Fluoridation of water supplies in Australia remains a highly contentious and emotive issue and there are many citizens opposed to mandatory fluoridation. Dedicated individuals fight a continuous battle to try and keep industrial fluoride waste out of our drinking water for the benefit of the people in the community. Citizen’s Against Fluoride is one such organisation fighting for the democratic right to have safe water supplies. President of Citizen’s Against Fluoridation, Paul Jones says: “In most parts of Australia there is naturally occurring fluoride in minute quantities, which is fairly inconsequential. The problem is the artificial
Local Citizens Against Fluoridation president Paul Jones fluoride – this is purely industrial waste and it is being released into our water supplies. The dose cannot be controlled due to the huge variations of individual consumption of water, on top of that – the fluoride is absorbed through the skin. Every time you shower, bathe or take a swim in a backyard pool. Most people don’t think about that.” Almost all countries in the EEU are nonfluoridated and according to data from the World Health Organization, there is no discernible difference in tooth decay between the minority of developed countries that fluoridate their water
and the majority that do not. Non-fluoridated Scotland commenced its successful alternative dental health program CHILDSMILE in 2001. Designed to involve children in tooth brushing schemes at preschool and primary school. CHILDSMILE saves Scotland 5 million pounds per year and prevents 1000s of fillings and saves a whole lot of pain and suffering. The program is highly effective and may get underway in Queensland soon. In the 1950s and ‘60s it was common practice for kids to be lined up daily and given a fluoride tablet with their morning dose of
vitamin C. Thankfully, fluoride tablets are no longer available or recommended from any reputable source because they are poisonous like fluoridated thoothpaste which must not be swallowed. Dr William Hirzy, vice-president, EPA Union stated: “A real concern with children, especially newborn infants, is that the blood/brain barrier is not fully developed and children are getting an inappropriate dose of fluoride in the developing brain, as seen in the depression of IQ in fluoridated communities.” To find out more go to the Citizens Against Fluoridation Facebook page or chat with President, Paul Jones at the information stand outside Grower’s Market on Monday May 8, 2017, from 9.30am.

Glasshouse ‘pays off’ The Rinse Cycle By Adam Roberts - Former Councillor, Port MacquarieHastings Council
Sponsored by SkillsLink Training - your community college.
Never too late for more study OVER the last couple of years now, through this column, you have read about the incredible range of training that we deliver to our community here at SkillsLink Training. None of this would be possible without our passionate and dedicated educators that make up our training staff. These are people who come from all walks of life from secretaries to Surf Life Savers, baristas to businesspeople, from artists to aborists, publicans to paramedics. Indeed, a cross section of our wonderful community. As well as a wealth of experience in their particular fields, these trainers all have one thing in common. They have all returned to study to complete a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. This national qualification enables them to share the skills they have built up over the years and ‘give back’ to their industry and their community by becoming a qualified Vocational (VET) Trainer and Assessor. If you have skills and experience to share and an interest in passing your knowledge on to others, then training could be a rewarding new career path for you. If you already have your TAE and would like to ensure that you are up to date and ready for the transition to the new qualification later in the year, we have both the full qualification and the two new units, which will help you along the journey. It is never too late to make the transition but now is better than never! Come and join our transition program which kicks off this month. Call in and find out more at 77 Hastings River Drive, at the bottom of Clifton Drive, or ring 6583 7288 and visit our website on www. skillslinktraining.com.au to see all our other programs and courses.
ENQUIRE TODAY
JUST the sheer mention of the word ‘Glasshouse’ used to stir up all sorts of thoughts, feelings and ‘feedback’ from community members. For some, it still does. Back in 2009 the Port Macquarie Hastings Council completed the construction of the $50 million dollar Arts, Entertainment and Conference Centre which ultimately became known as the Glasshouse. For those not around the local area at that time, the State Government undertook a very public enquiry which examined all aspects of the Glasshouse ‘project’, examining the roles of the council staff and also the councillors who commissioned the project. Numerous witnesses were called and ultimately the councillors took the full brunt of the fallout and were sacked over the project. The sacking of the councillors saw more than four years of council administration and three different administrators over that period. Some would say this was a dark period for the broader community, a time of mixed emotions and community members torn between being glad to see ‘someone pay’ for the Glasshouse ‘debacle’ but also ‘incensed’ that the councillors bore the brunt and not the council staff members who were involved in delivering the project. For more than a decade before the Glasshouse was built, a number of plans, iterations and amendments were made which pushed the cost of project up from an initial ‘few million dollars’ to a final build cost of around $50m. Fast-forward to the first council elections after the administration period and there were a number of key issues debated during the campaigns of councillor hopefuls. The Glasshouse issue was right at the top of the list, along with the topic of roads and infrastructure of course. The community elected eight first-time councillors, including myself and one previous councillor (Lisa Intemann), to return community representation to the council. Once the new council had completed the induction process and got its feet under the desk so to speak, the new council adopted a unique ‘portfolio’ structure whereby each councillor was assigned a special area of business to foster and progress on behalf of the council and community. A number of key portfolios were assigned including Economic Development, Roads and Infrastructure, Major Projects and the Glasshouse. I was afforded the opportunity to Chair the Glasshouse Portfolio, arguably the most politically sensitive portfolio area at the time. Never one to be over-awed by any ‘challenge’,
The Glasshouse - still a controversial top for many in Port Macquarie it was actually a pretty straight-forward process of dealing with some of the fundamental issues associated with the Glasshouse – and improving on the current state of play. After undertaking a comprehensive analysis of the history of the project, analysing the current financial situation and the potential outlook of the facility, all was laid bare, warts and all. The fundamental issues uncovered included the massive cost of construction, a limited income potential due to the physical layout of the facility, not least a very strong anti-Glasshouse sentiment from a vast number of community members, ratepayers and or business community. When I was afforded the Glasshouse portfolio, the financial costs of operating the Glasshouse were costs heavy and income potential minimal under the current operational structure. Other issues included a reluctance from some within the council staff ranks to see the Glasshouse succeed and the Glasshouse used as a political football. I note many times the Glasshouse was used as a convenient argument to ‘explain’ the council’s lack of delivery with regard to many projects and initiatives ‘due to the lack of funds’. Which, of course, was a load of bollocks. Even early on in the history of the Glasshouse, the running costs and the repayments of the construction loans were, from memory, less than 6% of budget expenditure. These costs were much lower than many people had been led to believe with the amount of spin and ‘positioning’ of some key influencers ‘suggesting’ the Glasshouse was ‘sinking’ the council. I’ll never say that the Glasshouse was ‘cheap’

to build. Nor will I ever say the community absolutely ‘needed it’. As a councillor and Portfolio Chair, it was never my mindset to defend the previous council in their decision to undertake the project and build the Glasshouse. Nor did I take the position to ever condemn them for it. However, it absolutely was my decision to ensure that the current (at the time) council make the most of the opportunity to see a positive outcome for the facility and pro-actively ensure the facility provided value for the community, whether it was now or in the near future. After seeing a vision, strategic and operational plan to turn the outlook around for the Glasshouse, with the support and assistance from all of the councillor and the Glasshouse Sub-Committee, the future of the Glasshouse is much, much better than in 2009. In a nutshell, the Strategic Plan adopted and implemented by the last council saw a twopronged approach to reduce the overheads (operating costs) of the Glasshouse while simultaneously increasing the revenue. The Glasshouse now boasts one of the most utilised entertainment centres of its type in Australia and with the implementation and delivery of the Glasshouse Strategic Plan, now costs millions less to the ratepayers than ever before. I love laying into the council for getting things wrong as much as the next person. But in the case of the Glasshouse, the last council got it right and the ratepayers are many millions of dollars better off for their endeavours.

Poet to lead workshop By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THERE will be no writer’s block at the upcoming poetry workshop with Judy Johnson. A group from Port Macquarie, who call themselves the Friday Poetry Group, has organised a poetry workshop with Johnson, the well-known Australian poet. “Judy has done a lot of poetry teaching all over the country and she’s very good at,” said organiser Gill Goater. “We will be learning about word choice when it comes to writing your own poetry. “We’ve asked Judy specifically to do that. At the beginning of the workshop she also does a fine-tuning of each of our poems, which is a very good way to feed the choices that you make when you are writing a poem, and improves the standard of your own poetry. She is also going to give us some suggestions for generating poetry of our own.” The workshop will also include an exercise on poetic diction which especially gives an insight into how to generate that unusual, out -of-context word which fits so perfectly and lifts the poem a notch higher. Gill also said that although she wishes poetry was more popular, she is glad to see that it is taking on different platforms with the younger generation. “What’s happening now is that performance poetry is gathering speed,” Gill explained. “A lot of younger people love to get up on stage and deliver their poetry in a dramatic fashion, on a hip hop rhythm sometimes. “The thing about poetry is that it talks in a real way about important stages in peoples’ lives and important life events, and often those things are very difficult to write about in prose. “Poetry is a very condense form and uses a lot of devises in order to get various levels of meaning. It is an intellectual challenge, and is
Leading Australian poet Judy Johnson also quite profound and the range that modern poets write about is enormous and many of these things have raised very important issues that people relate to. “They may have experienced the same things and say ‘yes, I remember that when I was having my baby’ or just that feeling when everything feels perfect in the world and a bird flies by, just little moments like that take you into a sense of wonder or awe or recognition and remembrance, it’s pretty powerful.” Judy Johnson has written five poetry
collections, several chapbooks, two novels, and a verse novel Jack, which won the Victorian Premier’s Award. She is one of four editors of a major 25-year retrospective anthology Contemporary Australian Poetry. Her latest collection Dark Convicts is funded by a Literature Board grant. Join Judy and Gill for the Poetry Workshop on Friday (May 5) at the Port Macquarie Library from 10am-3pm. The workshop is $60 and for bookings and enquiries contact Gill Goater on 65823815 or gillg@tsn.cc

Council seeking public feedback on flying foxes RESIDENTS are being asked to work with Kempsey Shire Council by providing their feedback on experiences and impacts of flying foxes in the East Kempsey area. Council has released an online survey to help with the development of a plan of management for the flying fox camp at Rudder Park, next to the Macleay River. The plan will be developed by Council in conjunction with specialist ecological consultant group Ecosure. Council has received $15,000 under the Local Government NSW Flying Fox Grant Program to help manage flying foxes in Kempsey. “Council acknowledges that flying foxes can be a problem for some residents, particularly in the East Kempsey area, so we are keen to work with the affected property owners to find a solution,” Council’s Environmental Strategies Officer, Bill Larkin said. “We have been in close discussions with Ecosure consultants who have been out to the camp and assessed the area to provide us with their recommendations.” Mr Larkin encourages residents of the East Kempsey area and surrounds to take the opportunity to fill out the short but important survey. “The survey has been designed so we can accurately capture local residents concerns and needs while protecting this unique and critical species.” Council will be engaging with nearby residents to notify them about the survey and the development of the management plan. The survey is open now until Friday, May 12 and can be found by going to: http://yoursay. macleay.nsw.gov.au/flying_fox

Some of the vintage items in Lifeline’s Revival Department create plenty of interest from shoppers
Lifeline’s big on retro The department deals in ‘pre-loved’ and vintage homewares, fashions, hi-fi, cameras, records and more. “We are excited to create a place where homewares and fashion lovers can connect with beautiful and stylish vintage items that embody enduring quality and craftsmanship.” says Lisa Willows. “There is a sustainability message in promoting beautiful vintage furniture, decor and fashion, too” says shop manager Helen Cornhill. “We love finding pieces of well-made furniture with quality that’s hard to match, which have years of life left in them” agreed Sue Harris. The ‘Revival Department’ was co-designed by Helen Cornhill and Retail Manger Jemma
McDonald who worked together to get the section open for business. “You’ll find our prices are reasonable and there are some great deals to be found,” said Helen. “We know what’s valuable to our customer, which is more important than the value on every piece of vintage we come across. “But in saying that, we are also raising money to support local suicide awareness and prevention programs. “So if you have any hidden vintage gems that you’d like to donate, we would greatly appreciate it.” The Revival Department can be found at Lifeline Shop, 122 Gordon Street, Port Macquarie. New long-range shark repellent
Rent-A-Dad ‘joke’ fires up internet
FOLLOWING their presentation at the Senate inquiry into shark mitigation and deterrent measures last week, Shark Shield, manufacturers of the world’s only scientifically proven and independently tested electrical shark deterrent, has announced the pre-production release of a long-range version of its technology. The new Shark Shield Ocean Guardian is based on 20 years of research and utilizes a patented Metamaterial Electromagnetic Transducer, with expectations of repelling sharks within a 100-meter diameter of each unit installed. Shark Shield CEO Lindsay Lyon said: “The Ocean Guardian has been many years in the making and has come about through a partnership with leading physicists and biologists. “We have been able to produce a longrange shark deterrent solution to not only protect beach goers, but significantly reduce the environmental impacts caused by using shark nets, drum lines and culling.” The new transducer form is based on technology used to treat patients in the medical field, including oncology and urology, with clinical studies demonstrating that the electromagnetic field does not affect the health of humans or ocean life, such as sharks or dolphins. “Sharks have small short-range electrical receptors in their snouts used for finding food,” said Mr Lyon. “Shark Shield’s electromagnetic field causes unbearable spasms in these sensitive sensors, which turn sharks away. “The Ocean Guardian leverages this weakness in sharks to not only deter them, but in the long run we hope to teach them to stay away from beaches protected by Shark Shield.”
By SANDY MACKENZIE WHAT started out as a joke between two mates over a couple of beers has become a bit of an internet sensation. Local lads Jay Nichols, a full-time stay-athome dad, and spray painter Grant Scott were having a few beers over lunch last week when they came up with a rather unique idea for a business. “We were just kicking back, relaxing having a bit of fun,” said Jay. “Grant is currently single, so I was giving him my usual ribbing about how most of his previous girlfriends have been single mums. We started joking about how he could become a dad-forhire.” Jay spent a bit of time the next day writing up the advert and posted it to about 10 of the local Buy, Swap, Sell groups on Facebook, the first being a local Mum’s & Bub’s group. Since then, the hilarious Rent-A-Dad advert has gone viral! Grant says, “We knew we would get a lot of people laughing and expected a lot of comments, but we didn’t expect this – the post has gone ballistic! “There is a constant stream of new notifications on our phones to say the advert has been shared and liked. One person shared the advert to a closed group - BGA (Bad Girls
Jay Nichols and Grant Scott check out some of the responses to their Rent-A-Dad online ad Advice) - with the comment; ‘Opinions ladies? Would you use this uhem ‘services?’ There have been a couple of serious enquiries as well.” All jokes aside, the positive feedback and the enquiry to date have got Jay and Grant thinking – maybe there is a need for a dad-for-hire business? “We’re both keen to pursue the idea. There are loads of mums out there that could do with a

GIG GUIDE
So come and enjoy a journey through time as you are taken for a Meander Down Broadway as part of a fundraiser for the Hastings Theatre Co. Bursary Fund to help local youth achieve their performing arts potential. Hastings Theatre Co. is a brand new local theatre company that has just begun in Port Macquarie. Located at 56 Hollingworth Street, rehearsals are on Friday nights starting at 6.45pm and run until about 9pm. The theatre was started to give everyone an opportunity at directing a show, being onstage in a show, or learning about backstage and lighting. Anyone can join Hastings Theatre Co, just send through an email to hastingstheatreco@ gmail.com, letting them know a bit about you and why you’re joining. The aim is that with every show they put on, they raise money for a Performing Arts Bursary Fund to help disadvantaged youth achieve their performing arts potential.

Club stages final race of the season NSW Rural Fire Service Mid-North Coast District Coordinator Terry Kitching (left), Port Macquarie Outrigger Club President Karen Newman, Head Coach Wes Byrnes and RFS Communications Coordinator Kevin Thornton are hoping for plenty of support for their trivia night
Trivia night fund-raiser PORT Macquarie’s outrigger paddlers have joined forces with the NSW Rural Fire Service to raise much-needed funds for both organisations. Maroro Outrigger President Karen Newman said the club was hoping for a strong showing of community support for a trivia night being hosted by the club on May 13. “Our members come from right across the Mid-North Coast including smaller towns and villages between Kempsey and Taree, and we were very saddened by the plight of those families affected by the devastating February bushfires in our region,” she said. “It was also an important reminder of the dangerous and vital work done by our RFS volunteers. “We had been planning a fundraising event to help obtain safety equipment for our club, but

IN Pennants this week, the 2’s had an incredibly close game against Port City at Lake Cathie but, regrettably, went down by one shot on the masterboard, 64-63. The 2’s final game this Saturday will be against Kempsey Heights at Wesport. The 7’s year is over after losing to Lake Cathie at North Haven, going down on the master-board 60 shots to 54. There was a turnout of 22 players for our Wednesday afternoon club Select Triples. Best performed winners on the day with +21 were Len Noel, Tony Gates and Jim Hopcroft. Runnersup were Rex Shrubb, Earl Debreceny and Tony Kundicevic with +7. Friday afternoon’s Nominated Pairs attracted eight teams and winners with the best margin of +20 were Peter McLeod and John Wells. Runners-up were Mal Agnew and visitor Peter Taylor with +14. Also on Friday afternoon a semi-final in the Pairs Championship was played with Ken Ansley and Paul ‘Smiley’ Ireland defeating last year’s champions, Phil Saville and Jeff Purdy by 28 shots to 22. The second semi-final was played Sunday morning with Ross Laurie and Kevin Pampling defeating Alby Schroder and Shane Ireland by 28 shots to 16. The final will be played on Sunday morning, May 7 with play commencing at 9:00am.

thought it could also be a great chance to support the RFS as well, so we are really pleased to be partnering with them on the night.” The club has already received generous community support for the initiative, with the Port City Bowling Club donating the venue for the night at no cost. NSW RFS Mid-North Coast District Coordinator Terry Kitching said the organisation was excited to be teaming up with the outrigger club and he hoped to see plenty of full tables on the night. “We know this relatively small club has had a great record of success on the water in recent years, but it also has a strong community focus, having raised money last year for Marine Rescue and supported various other community causes,” Mr Kitching said.
“We were extremely grateful to have been invited to take part in this fundraiser and we’re looking forward to a fun night.” The trivia night will be compered by the club’s head coach, Wes Byrnes, and long-time member Garth Norris, with tickets available at $20 per person. “For anyone who may have seen our canoes paddling past the Town Green or off the coast, this is also a great opportunity to meet up with members of the club to find out more about the sport in a relaxed, fun environment,” Norris said. Inquiries and bookings for the trivia night can be made with Gianna Douglas from the Maroro Club by phoning her on 0421073938 or emailing gianna.douglas11@gmail.com.

THE final race of the season was held by the Port Macquarie Sailing Club on Sunday afternoon in a light and variable southerly and a strengthening run-out tide. The early midday start was held back to 12.30pm to allow the breeze to fill in a little more, but still gave time for one of Noman Broomhall’s great BBQs after the race. Jack Corthals on Harpic led the catamaran division easily for the first two laps, but after verbal advice that he was finishing, he finished a lap early instead of doing three laps. The handicapper multiplied his two-lap time to three laps to rectify the results, giving him the yardstick win ahead of Tony Kuhn on Stella, then Rob Barwick on Drift and Dave Winter on Spica. Spica won on handicap, followed by Stella, then Drift 15 seconds ahead of Harpic. Paul Robertson and Martina Holt in Flembouyant had a blinder in the monohull division, finishing just behind the leading catamarans to win on yardstick. Kelly Miller in Devocean was second ahead of Elsa and Simon Gandy in Voyager, Steve Bohlsen in Splash Dance, Stuart Symons and Sharon Carney in Big Bang, Phil, Zanda, and Blake Lillehagen in Elmo, and Michael Jones in Jupiter. Tony Walker in Deep Purple retired due to the flukey conditions in the first half lap. Splash Dance won on handicap again this week, followed by Devocean, Flembouyant, Big Bang 25 seconds ahead of Voyager, Elmo, and Jupiter. The presentation night will be held at the club on May 13 starting at 5.30pm. The AGM will be on July 11, then a working bee on August 27 will see us ready for next season which starts in September. and B Herron. Runners-up were R Dargan, G Purnell and K Caddy. Rep footy is tipping curveball
Aussie captain Cameron Smith
OK, time to take a breather. With just over a third of the NRL season behind us tipsters get a chance this weekend to regroup as the rep season starts. On Friday night Australia takes on New Zealand at GIO Stadium Canberra, while on Sunday NSW City v Country does a farewell lap at Mudgee. But more on those rep games later. For tipsters the rep calendar brings in a whole new dimension. This Test match and then three State of Origin clashes makes things even tougher for us. A quick check of the ‘leaderboard’ shows us that usual suspects the Storm and Broncos are in the top four. While the Cowboys, with JT sidelined, have fallen to ninth. These three teams are traditionally the ones hardest hit by Origin and that will probably be the case again this year. Loyalty is the calling card of the Maroons. It is harder to get out of that team than in it. So players who have served the

state well in the previous year will expect to be there again in 2017. For the Broncos this will cause an even greater burden this season. Bennett’s boys have won six from nine, but of all teams, have had one of the toughest draws. Almost every week they have been involved in a war. With a roster that is not as good as previous years, Bennett is still exacting every drop of juice every weekend. Now throw on top of that a Test match and then three Origins and what comes out the other end are a group of players who are rung dry well before the finals series. The Broncs have three players in the Aussie team for this Friday night’s Test – Boyd, Gillett and Thaiday (plus Blair and Nikorima for the Kiwis) – but expect that to double for Origin – so there will be some tied Brisbane players limping through the back end of the season. Same for Melbourne. Same for the Cows. Club depth is now crucial. Keep a close

eye on selections through this second ‘third’ of the season. Also watch out for clubs who have struggled in the first nine games, but are about to ‘explode’. A classic example are the Titans. They started with a promising roster than hit an injury brick wall that saw them really struggle. However with troops returning they have put two wins back to back. The one big surprise package so far in the NRL is the St George Illawarra Dragons. They would be very disappointed with their Round Nine loss to the Storm, but still have plenty of momentum. The Eels (7th) are another who are performing slightly better than expected, while the Panthers are the shock disappointment – second last with 2-7 (win-loss). The decision to axe the annual City v Country clash was sad but inevitable. There is just too much on the NRL calendar to carry a game that has lost its relevance. Such was the ‘lack of interest’ factor that City Origin selectors had to delay naming their team because of the number of withdrawals. Decades ago this fixture was a key part of the selection criteria for the NSW team. Back in the day there was 7th May 2017 a similar game in Queensland. It was a City vs Country match that gave country players a rep 7th May 2017 pathway. But this was in the days when Sunday, 7th May, 4pm, Glen Willow Sporting Complex, many top players chose to stay in the Mudgee bush for work reasons. City vs Country For many years there has been no reason for these games. Each weekend we have eight NRL games that are the ultimate selection trials. Any player still in the country is there because they aren’t good enough for the next step, or have decided that rugby league is not their number one priority. Some things in sport just reach their ‘use by’ date – and that is the case with City v Country.
