DON’T be fooled by her age or quiet voice. Eleven-year-old Shalise Leesfield, pictured, is on a mission to change the world – the marine world, at least, and she is making herself heard loud and clear. Shalise has been on her determined path since she was nine-and-a-half, eager to see bins for discarded fishing line installed at every beach, starting with local beaches at Lake Cathie, then Laurieton and Port Macquarie. This is no lightweight mission. In the past 18 months Shalise has collected kilometres of line, hooks and sinkers that threaten marine and

That is where Shalise met Calamity and heard about her plight. Shalise might have just been another young girl in the audience enjoying the show. But Calamity’s story went straight to young Shalise’s heart. “Calamity had been rescued and released after being trapped in 15 metres of fishing line wrapped around her tail,” says Shalise. • Continued Page 6

Centenary of rail link By SUE PATERICK TRAIN spotters will be in heaven on the last weekend of November when the Macleay River Historical Society holds the event of a lifetime to celebrate the coming of rail to Kempsey. One hundred years ago the rail link from Wauchope to Kempsey was officially opened on Friday, November 30, 1917. It made the proposed rail link from Maitland one step closer to the Queensland border. The Dungog Chronicle reported the important occasion. “The people of the Macleay district prepared for the historic event in a grand way and despite the huge crowds and the magnitude of the organising, everything in every sphere was conducted to perfection,” the paper said. The Dungog Chronicle called Kempsey the ‘Eden of the North’ and said the district was remarkably prosperous due to its fertile soil, river flats covered in maize and its untapped potential. Chairperson of the Kempsey Centenary of Rail committee, Garry Munday, hopes the upcoming 100-year celebration of the rail link will go off just as smoothly. In the lead-up to the Centenary, the Macleay River Historical Society will feature photographs and stories of Kempsey’s past 100 years of rail, and its Blast from the Past on Facebook will feature stories and memories. The event will kick off with a luncheon at the Kempsey Macleay RSL Club on Saturday, November 25, and all current and former railway employees and their families are invited. Guest speaker will be Joan Dooley, who will be recounting her family’s experiences with the Railway Refreshment Rooms. Later that day a special vintage rail motor, the ‘Tin Hare’, will leave Kempsey for a family return trip to Eungai. Tickets cost $20 for adults and $10 for children under 12. On Sunday there will be a fun-filled day at the Kempsey Railway Station with the vintage rail motor making five trips to Eungai during the day. There will also be vintage cars, motorbikes, markets and buskers at the station to keep everyone entertained. Two special trips will be made to Macksville at 5.30pm each evening for an adults’ Wine and Cheese Trip. Cassergrains are providing the wine. Tickets for the Wine and Cheese Trips are $45 per adult with a limited number of tickets available on the Saturday and Sunday evenings. A fly-over of planes will occur at about 10.30am on Monday, November 27 when Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey unveils a historic plaque at Kempsey Railway Station. School groups will entertain the public and official guests with a repertoire of railwaythemed vocals and the Family History Group

LIKE so many people, Sarah Toohey has felt the impact of blood cancer after her uncle Eric was diagnosed with the disease. Sarah is organising the upcoming Leukaemia Foundation’s Light the Night fundraiser in Port Macquarie and hopes her uncle will be well enough to attend. Either way, Sarah will be walking with her blue lantern, indicating her association with someone who has been diagnosed with blood cancer. “We are inviting all Port Macquarie locals who have felt the devastating impact of blood cancer to carry a lantern alongside friends and family at a special twilight event on Friday, October 20,” said Sarah. “The Light the Night fundraiser is now in its 10th year of bringing the community together in more than 140 locations, in every state and territory, to remember and reflect with a ceremony and short lantern walk. “Last year those who attended the local event helped raise $6000 and this year we hope to raise $10,000 to help provide support and services for local families fighting blood cancer.” Sarah said there would be live music, market and food stalls at the Light the Night event at Westport Park, with entry by a gold coin donation. “Although the official night is October 6, fundraising can run from September to November and we have been holding raffles, Bunnings sausage sizzles, the markets will donate profits and we will be selling lanterns,” said Sarah. “Attending Port Macquarie’s Light the Night event is a wonderful way to show those in our community facing blood cancer that, even in their darkest hour, they’re not alone. “Every one of us who raises money and carries a lantern will help light the way for them.” Those attending hold gold lanterns to remember loved ones lost to blood cancer and white lanterns if they’ve been diagnosed themselves. Blue lanterns are proudly raised by friends, family, workmates and the wider community. “The Leukaemia Foundation is dedicated to helping more Australians with blood cancer survive and live a better quality of life,” said Sarah. “It helps hundreds of families from regional Australia each year by providing free accommodation in capital cities so they can access life-saving treatment at major hospitals. “The charity also offers free transport to medical appointments, counselling and information. This will be a community event and we hope for a great turnout to reach our goal of $10,000,” said Sarah.

Town Beach Adani protest
THE biggest human sign event ever staged in Port Macquarie will take place on Saturday, October 7 at 2pm on Town Beach. Everyone is invited to join in and be part of a national day of action. The human sign will spell two simple words – Stop Adani. Adani is the billionaire Indian coal miner who wants to build the biggest coal mine in Australia’s history, a mega mine in north Queensland. Bring your family, friends, neighbours, colleagues. This is a family-friendly, fun, peaceful event. We need as many people as possible to send a message to our politicians - together we can Stop Adani! Wear something red and/or your #StopAdani shirt, so we really stand out. And bring sun protection, an umbrella if the sun is out, drinking water, and any signs and placards you have. We can also supply some. Thousands of
people around Australia will be making clear our opposition to this mega coal mine. State and Federal governments have promised Adani free coal, free water and $1 billion. The government’s plan to spend $1 billion on this project would be the biggest waste of taxpayers’ money ever. One thing is sure, if this mine goes ahead, the Great Barrier Reef, our precious icon of Aussie natural beauty, is finished. The world’s top ocean scientists have made it clear that to protect the Reef, we have to move beyond coal. A massive human sign is a creative display of opposition to this dirty coal mine and the controversial $1 billion of public money it could receive. We’re going to spell it out for our politicians, we want them to Stop Adani. Kerri-ann Jones Climate Change Australia Hastings Branch
THE aerial shot of the new Town Square definitely marks a shift in Port Macquarie from a country community with a Town Green to an ugly concrete jungle of a Town Square. This neobrutalistic architecture could be borrowed from a plaza we could see in Moscow or Beijing hosting a military parade. To my eye it does not look like an inviting tourist destination. As a semi-tropical destination we need more colour from flowering plants which are replaced each season to be planted in raised flower beds
wide enough for people to sit around the edge. The flowering plants were removed from the other end of Horton Street at its junction with Gordon Street and we no longer see the words ‘Port Macquarie’ formed by the flowers. When we spend money on public spaces, we expect something aesthetically pleasing at best or halfway acceptable at worst. This minimalistic concept for the Town Square just does not make the acceptable grade. Colleen Carmody

I WOULD like to thank and recommend a top service in our area - Port Macquarie Taxi. I cannot praise them highly enough. Thank you so much to the prompt, friendly, reliable drivers who have helped my mother and I for the past 10 months. You are outstanding.
TO the staff at Harvey Norman, Port Macquarie for friendly, no-fuss service dealing with a faulty PVR I recently returned for replacement. Well done.
I WAS greatly taken by the garbage collector who, in the Canal Zone, got down from his truck and wheeled the two bins to the gate of the frail couple in their nineties living across the road from us. He then got back in his truck and resumed his collections. What a lovely act of kindness!

especially my daughter Holly our coordinator extraordinaire! I took extra time to come home and caught up with old friends and family along the way – I had a blast! Even though I took a trip down memory lane; I also had a lot of time to clear my head and think about my future. It was a big lesson for me for a number of reasons. Reminiscing on my young self, I realised that my self-confident, positive, happygo-lucky attitude had slowly been whittled away over time. I’m still that person, there’s just a few layers of exhaustion and cynicism that need to be peeled back. In the time out, I feel I’ve regained my confidence to be more spontaneous and make decisions that make me happy. I haven’t made decisions based on my happiness alone ever since getting on a plane in 1979. I’ve always been a people pleaser so their wants and needs have always come first. On the odd occasion I’ve done something purely for me over the years, I’ve either been made feel guilty by others or beaten myself up for being selfindulgent. No more! By far the best lesson for me? Mental health breaks are the bomb! Before taking my break I would happily have choked 90 per cent of the community who walked in the front door! I was overworked, overtired, overstressed, and overwhelmed – just over it! Less than two weeks later and I feel totally refreshed with a healthier perspective of where I’m heading and what I want for me in my life! I’m feeling blessed, filled with hope for what’s on the horizon and have an amazing peace in my heart with the present. No straight jacket required!

TO our state government for introducing a container tax of 15 cents on every bottle when we already re-cycle. Yet they have told no one about this tax.. Just look at it this way, a carton of beer will go up four dollars yet the government hasn’t announced where to re-cycle this to get our $2.40 back. Typical of government bowing to Greens’ ideology with no insight for the local person. And it is poorly planned.

ALOHA! I decided I was in need of a ‘mental health’ break after putting September 21st edition of YLI to print. So instead of just dreaming about a change of scenery – I got in the car and went. I had a couple of business meetings in Brisbane I’ve been putting off so I finally went, did what was necessary and took some time for myself while I was at it, I kept driving to Hervey Bay to have a mini holiday to see my eldest daughter Nadine and her family. It is the best thing I could have done! I took a bit of a trip down memory lane and remembered the girl that jumped on a plane from NZ to Brisbane, nearly 40 years ago and set off to travel the world with a backpack and $6,000 in her pocket! Now that I’m a sensible adult, I took two days to get from Port Macquarie to Hervey Bay and set off on my little adventure in my car, Black Betty, for eight days, with every conceivable device known to mankind so I could work remotely - and have a break? OMG! There is a certain level of lunacy right there. I’m going on a mental health break and I’m stressing about being able to work while I’m at it! Long story short, no matter what I tried to do, the only device that would work was my phone, in a particular spot in the back yard, ironically, near the pool. I drove to town, brought a new dongle and all the ‘gear’ I needed to get internet on the laptop, tried working out of my daughters work, tried hot spotting my iPad to my phone - nothing! I got a dumping of emails on my phone a couple of times a day, I’m still sifting through the 350+ junk emails to find the real ones and am still receiving a backlog of messages on social media etc, that seems to be finally getting close to real time posts! The only work I could do was to proof read the full paper on my iPhone! Obviously, the universe wanted me to have a proper break and left me no choice but to hand it over and go with the flow…it was absolutely fabulous! Thanks to team Indy for picking up the ball,

Hall set for annual market By SUE PATERICK
It is a great “ place to find a

“
FOR 106 years the Sherwood Hall has been a gathering place for the local community, somewhere families came to have fun and make memories. And that’s just what is on offer on Sunday, October 15 at the Sherwood Hall’s annual spring markets when wonderful food and all sorts of goodies will be on offer. The hall committee’s secretary, treasurer and booking officer, Joanne Norris, recalls a lot of great times spent there, especially at oldtime dances. “Sherwood Hall means a lot to me because of a family connection,” she said. It was Joanne’s great-great-grandfather, John Ward, who left the land to his daughters Rebecca and Anne when he died. At the time John lived at what became Nagle Falls Road on a property called Nethergrove. He had five children: Rebecca, Emma, Fanny, William and Anne. When Anne died her share reverted to Rebecca and it was her husband, John Davis, who decided to build a hall for the community to use. Joanne isn’t the only committee member with a family connection to Sherwood Hall. Rebecca and John Davis’ great-greatgranddaughter, Annette McMillan, is also on the committee. The committee’s president, Bev Davy’s husband Keith, is also a descendent of Emma Ward. So it is no wonder this group of dedicated volunteers are so passionate about Sherwood’s lovely old hall, and have managed to keep it going for more than 100 years. The hall is in the process of being restored and getting a lick of paint with the help of
Sherwood Hall committee members Lyn Saul, Joanne Norris and Bev Davy have a long association with their beloved hall and are looking forward to their spring market inmates from the Mid North Coast Correctional Centre. “They are doing a wonderful job,” Joanne said.
This cute country hall will look as pretty as the rolling hills around it when the work is completed. Historic Sherwood Hall’s spring market will
open at 8am and finish about 1pm, depending on the number of people still around. It is a great place to find a bargain if you are looking for beautiful orchids, candles, jewellery, bric-a-brac, plants, cakes, edged teatowels and so much more. The Macleay Crafters will have a few sites inside the hall to display their wonderful creations. To fill hungry tummies there will be sausage, steak and rissole sandwiches, Devonshire teas, cold drinks, tea, coffee and some of the yummiest cakes and slices ever. There will also be a tray of fruit and vegetables to raffle. “I’m sure my great, great, grandfather would be happy to know his land and the hall were still being used for people’s enjoyment,” Joanne said.

Vintage crop of volunteers By BARBARA DYER SOME 157 years after the property was established and George Francis planted grapes, a diligent band of volunteers ensures Port Macquarie’s oldest vineyard and homestead flourishes. Douglas Vale Historic Homestead and Vineyard celebrates spring with an open day on Saturday, October 21, from 9.30am until 2.30pm, and even those who have visited before can return to see something new. Highlights of the day will include musical entertainment, an exhibition of Port Macquarie timber sailing ships, built by volunteer Ian Goulding, tastings at the Cellar Door including new release “Villard Blanc”, tours and Devonshire tea and a barbecue all day. While the open days show the results of a lot of love and hard work, behind the scenes an amazing bunch of volunteers ensures the homestead and vineyard is kept in a condition that would make its creator proud. Volunteer Kay Morrison said the helpers were crucial to the life of the homestead and vineyard. Considering the age range of volunteers falls primarily into the 50-80 years age group, it’s no mean feat that year-in, year-out these unpaid willing workers ensure the nets go up to protect against birds; insects are kept at bay; the grapes are harvested and, once the wine is made, volunteers set about labelling the bottles ready for sale at the cellar door. “We have some real experience among our volunteers,” said Kay. “We have one couple who have brought their wine growing skills from the Margaret River region. “Recently we had a spraying workshop. It takes a lot to maintain this property. “In July we held a pruning course, learning spur and cane pruning methods across three grape varieties. “Budburst is well underway and it will be harvest before we know it.” The property produces six exclusive wines, including the famous Portabella Port from original vine stock. Meanwhile, the historic homestead is a popular drawcard, furnished with authentic artefacts. “We are lucky that we have some original pieces including a Bible given to us by the family of homestead builder George Francis when they learned we were restoring the property. “It had been in the family since 1810. “We even have the chair that George’s daughter, famed vigneron Margaret Wilson, died in. She was sitting on the veranda and didn’t even fall out of her chair.” Kay said volunteers also maintained the amazing orchard and vegie garden. Income from the cellar door and open days is ploughed back into the upkeep and continuing restoration of the estate.
Dougles Vale Historic Homestead (above) will celebrate spring with an open day on October 21. The property flourishes through the hard work of many volunteers (centre and below)
Established in 1859 Douglas Vale Historic Homestead and Vineyard was established in 1859 by the Francis family from England. All that remains of the vast original property is a three-hectare site classified by the National Trust and a local Heritage site under the Port Macquarie/Hastings Council. Douglas Vale features the oldest timber homestead in Port Macquarie and gives insight into the lives of pioneer men and women
“Our Devonshire Tea, Tours and Tastings for $7 are really popular and we have all sorts of groups from U3A and Probus to family historians and photographers,” said Kay. “And although the property is open three days from 10-3pm, our volunteers work much longer hours.” Other highlights of the spring celebration on October 21 include craft stalls, a children’s book workshop, a Westport High P&C stall, a

• From Page 1 “That really upset me when I heard that; and learned how much harm old fishing line is doing to marine life and birds.” Shalise felt both sad and challenged, deciding then to do something to help. She heard about the Seal the Loop bins being used in Coffs, where discarded fishing line collected from sand, dunes and tangled in rocks can be dropped, keeping it out of the oceans and off beaches. For the past 18 months since meeting Calamity, Shalise has spent several hours every weekend collecting fishing line in and around Lake Cathie beach and lake areas near where she lives. Last April, she wrote and mailed letters to anyone she felt could help, from local council to local members; contacting the Dolphin Research Institute and the Dolphin Marine Magic Park where it started; seeking support and spreading the word about the risk of fishing line and hooks to marine life. “I joined a junior marine ranger program and did some research about the problem,” Shalise says. “I learned it takes 600 years for fishing line to decompose, so I did a study and took photos about how much line I was finding, where it was, how many hooks there were and how many fishermen used the area.” So, after 18 months and many hours of collecting discarded line, as well as serious campaigning for bins, Shalise was rewarded with the news that Nicki Julian from Waste Management (Port Macquarie-Hastings Council) approved the installation of two bins at Lake Cathie. “Mum and I collected the bins from Coffs Harbour and Nicki says council is hoping to get an EPA litter grant which will help us pay for a ranger to come and speak to fishermen and beach users to spread the message,” says Shalise. “Now I want these bins in Port Macquarie and Laurieton,” she adds. Shalise says her work is not over yet. Not only is she hoping to see the bins installed at more local fishing spots, she also goes with her mum three times a week to empty the bins and continues to report back to council on the problem. It’s a habit that has earned her pats on the back and praise from her teachers, as well as the appreciation of various organisations impressed with her attitude and determination to initiate change. It’s not every 11-year-old who can claim to be mentioned in Hansard parliamentary transcripts. Which makes for one very proud mum. “Shalise’s dad Rob and I are so proud of what Shalise is doing,” says Shannon Leesfield. “The ocean is at our backyard and we love it. “We have always been aware of picking up rubbish but 18 months ago Shalise really took it to heart and decided to do more. “MP Leslie Williams has been very supportive of Shalise’s passion and has sent her a parliamentary letter of congratulations. She will be mentioning Shalise in Parliament so that will all be recorded in Hansard. Shalise is really excited about that.”

It’s time to voice your singing passion By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC ARE you ready to raise the roof and sing Hallelujah in a massed choir? The Hastings Choristers have been around for more than 24 years and this year they are putting on something a little different - a Sing-along Messiah. “We’ve done many workshops before but this one is more of a fun opportunity for everybody to be a part of,” said Adele Miles, event Coordinator for the Hastings Choristers. This concert is for those who join in at each Carols by Candlelight but really want to be up on the stage, or for those who just want to tick off singing in a choir from their bucket list. The Singalong Messiah gives singers the opportunity to learn and perform choruses of Handel’s Messiah over just one weekend. “We warmly welcome singers who have never performed Messiah before as well as those experienced Messiah-singers,” said Adele. “The Messiah is a favourite Christmas concert and every time the Hastings Choristers puts a Messiah on, which is every couple of years, we just get completely sold out audiences. “We get lots of people singing along in the audiences anyway, so we thought why not make it so that people can actually sing along so we made it a weekend workshop. People can learn it and they don’t have to join a choir.” After the weekend of workshops to polish and refine the songs, there will be an open concert during Sunday afternoon at St Agnes Church. The beautiful sounds of the church’s organ will compliment the massed choir and the audience will be encouraged to bring along their own copies of the Messiah and sing along. “We already have many people booked in for the workshops and we still have two months to go,” Adele said. “We are expecting around 60-70 people to join in the workshop and concert. We have people coming from outside the area and from past experiences at the concerts the venue will be completely full.” Adele says more and more choirs are popping up in the area and it’s benefiting everyone. “We just think that singing is so good for your health and singing in a choir is a fantastic experience,” Adele explained. “We hope more people join. “We’ve also got the support of other choir leaders in the area and they are encouraging their choirs to join in because it’s a bit different and exciting for them too.” The Sing-along Messiah will be held on the weekend of November 25 and 26 at the St Agnes Church, Hay Street, Port Macquarie. To be part of the massed choir and learn and perform Handel’s Messiah at this event, register online at http://www.ticketebo.com.au/hastingschoristers/sing-along-messiah.html The Sing-along Messiah workshops will take place from 9am-4.30pm on the Saturday and 10am-1.30pm on the Sunday with the concert starting at 2pm and finishing at 3.30pm. Choir participant tickets range from $10 to $50 and concert audience tickets are $10 for students and $20 for adults. Make the most of this chance to belt out the Hallelujah Chorus on stage in a large choir of like-minded singers.

Funds are music to performers’ ears By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

KEMPSEY Shire Council has been successful in sourcing funds to give more opportunities to homegrown musicians. The Macleay will see more local music events in 2017 and 2018 after the Kempsey Shire Council was recently notified that it had won State Government funding. “I think that it’s a fantastic initiative for the region, and hopefully we will see some little boutique festivals popping up around the place,” said Lisa Willows from Red Earth Records in Port Macquarie. Lisa says she hopes more towns
in the region will also receive funding in the future to create more opportunities for local artists. “We have such talented artists all over the mid north coast and it’s crucial to bring talent to our area,” said Lisa. “We need to set up these festivals for our local acts to play to crowds and also to play with more highlyregarded artists. It gives them great opportunities for their careers.” Lisa works closely with Port Macquarie artists including Benje Travis and Roy Rose. The Kempsey Shire Council was one of eight councils to share in $150,000 in funding. “Macleay Live and Local will
bring together the townships of South West Rocks, Crescent Head and the Kempsey CBD,” said Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey. “Council’s successful proposal outlined its plans to showcase local acts over two weekends. The project aims to engage up to three venues to host the performers.” The funding is administered by Live Music Office on behalf of Create NSW and will cover the cost of fees for musicians, curators and technicians involved in the events. Keep an eye out on Kempsey as details of the events are still to come after further consultation with the Live Music Office.

Choir is fun and healthy IT’S now nearly two years since we started the Absolutely Everybody Choir of the School of Hard Knocks. So they have decided to put on a special concert for family and friends at 11.30am on Tuesday, November 14, at the Conservatorium of Music in Hollingworth Street, Port Macquarie. Please tell all your friends and entry will be by donation at the door. We’re looking for new choir members and volunteer buddies, so if you would like to join come and speak to the team on this day. The choir is for people who live with disadvantage and have a need for social and emotional support and development. We encourage as many local community members to come and experience the special magic that Marie van Gend, Ruth Allen and Miriam Latimore create with the choir each week. So if you know people who need uplifting bring them along to see what’s so special about this great celebration of talent and friendship. Dr Jonathon Welch, who founded the original choir in Melbourne 11 years ago, sees the School of Hard Knocks as a growing national network of Creative Arts for Recovery activities, including creative writing, art works and other musical performance. We’ve started a new Rock Music Class as part of the School of Hard Knocks PMH, at the Mac Adams Centre next to the town swimming pool, if that’s more to your liking. Come and join the fun and see what can happen to support people’s mental health and wellbeing, though shared passion for music and friendships. To find out about all our other learning and life development programs, please ring 65837288 for details, or visit our website on www.portace.com.au to see the full range.

Amazing job by our firefighters FIRST of all I’d like to extend thanks and congratulations to the firefighters who have been battling the massive bushfire in the Comboyne Plateau and Innes View area. These brave men and women risk their lives and have done an amazing job in protecting homes and businesses in the local communities. Residents and local freight operators across the region will soon reap the benefits of a significant infrastructure spend to replace and repair bridges. From the Hunter to the Hastings, 19 new bridge projects will be delivered following the announcement of successful projects under round three of the Coalition Government’s Bridges Renewal Programme. More than $10 million in federal funding has been committed to the projects, which will not only improve driving conditions by delivering safer and more productive bridges that are fitfor purpose, but also provide a huge boost in connectivity across the region. In addition to the social impacts for residents and the economic benefits for businesses, the Bridges Renewal Programme is also set to become a significant driver of job growth over the coming years. The Coalition Government has identified the upgrades and replacements of bridges as a
I WAS sitting, minding my own business, when a woman thrust a piece of paper in my hand. I think the last time a member of the opposite sex had given me a note was at Cardiff Public School. The note said something like “meet me behind the bike shed at noon”. This time the note said discombobulated. The note said “a new word for me”. I think I had written something on this word about 20 years ago, but I couldn’t find it. Discombobulated is a made-up word but had found its way into some dictionaries. It means something like confused. The Macquarie says it means “to upset or confuse a person” and it comes from discompose or discomfort. Webster says it means to perplex or upset. My big Oxford says it was a jocular alteration of decompose or discomfit (note the different spelling for discomfit). When it first appeared in the USA in the early 1800s - say 1825 to 1830 - discombobulate was just a playful, rootless coinage conveying a sense of confusion. It was probably inspired by similar words like discomfit and discompose, but the – bobulate part has no etymological origin. It is this nonsense quality that gives the word its meaning - to throw into a state of confusion. To be discombobulated is to be thoroughly befuddled.

national priority and committed $420 million over five years to 2021, with an ongoing commitment of $60 million each year thereafter. A full list of successful round three projects is available at www.infrastructure.gov.au/bridges. Our government has also announced major initiatives to improve aged care services. An additional 6000 home care packages will be made available to support more older Australians with higher care needs to remain living in the comfort of their own homes. With a recent Productivity Commission forecasting Australia will need almost one million aged care staff by 2050, a skilled workforce is essential to support quality care to those who need it most. At the same time, support for aged care consumers will be streamlined through a $20m investment in the My Aged Care system, to improve public access, especially for those in rural, regional and remote areas.

I AM concerned for the privacy of locals in my electorate after many residents recently received a bulk, unsolicited text message from the ‘Yes’ campaign for same-sex marriage. I have heard from many people who do not accept the excuse tendered in the media that peoples’ mobile numbers had been randomly generated by a computer, and those residents believed that their privacy had been breached as a result. A lot of people have asked me how their contact information has come to be given to a third party. People want to know how their contact details were obtained and are rightly concerned that their privacy has been breached. I have written to the Minister for Communications and asked for an explanation about the collection of peoples’ contact information and want to know what steps are being taken to ensure that people’s privacy is respected. Anyone concerned about their privacy being breached should visit the Australian Communications and Media Authority website at www.acma.gov.au or the Australian Information Commissioners website at www.oaic.gov.au

Max Cryer, in his book Curious, says discombobulated means disturbed, upset or disconnected. One of its earlier spellings was discombobricate. He said it was a favourite word for politicians not sure what town they were in. The New York Sun in its early days said “maybe some of you don’t get discombobracated” (note the different spelling). Then in 1838 C Neal said “while you tear the one, you’ll discombobberate the nerves of the other” (different spelling again). The spelling then settled down, but it was always in a jocular fashion. Kate Burridge, in her book Weeds in the Garden of Words, says “I do love this word”. If you said something like “the speaker was completely discombobulated by the heckler” you would get a good idea about the origins of the word. If you used the word confused you would also get a good idea.
Why discombobulated? What’s wrong with confused? I think some people like using big words. It makes them sound superior. There are lots of such words, when you think about it. I was always taught to use the shortest word. Discombobulated is a slang word from the USA. It was originally meant to be a joke word, but it caught on. A word site said discombobulated was likeable and catchy. I’ll leave that to you to decide. Some people have tried to use combobulated, meaning to make order or removed from a state of confusion, but it hasn’t caught on. You won’t find many uses on the dictionary. I looked in the Macquarie and the Webster but couldn’t find it. It certainly doesn’t derive from some preexisting word, but it is a back-formulation from discombobulation. I imagine a synonym would be recombobulate. If enough people start using combobulated it might eventually get into the dictionary. In the Milwaukee airport, just past security screening, is a sign that says ”recombobulation area”. Does that make it a word? lauriebarber, com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

So they approached Port Macquarie Base Hospital’s oncology unit manager and asked what piece of equipment they needed. The manager suggested a refrigerated centrifuge machine that local patients could use. “That’s pretty special because our fundraising efforts will benefit local people,” said Stephanie. Generous donations from local businesses and people have also helped the cause. “We’re a nice group of ladies who come together to help fight cancer,” said Stephanie. “It’s all done by little steps but it’s making a difference.” Their name came about because a few interested women had gathered under a spreading Lilly Pilly tree at Lyn Gleeson’s home - one of the founders of the group. KEMPSEY Shire Council is calling on residents to report any sightings of koalas so they can define their distribution, population and trends in the Macleay Valley. Council’s Environmental Strategies Officer, Bill Larkin, said Council is interested in keeping records of koalas, particularly the location of where they have been sighted in the Shire to raise awareness of their habitats. “We’re encouraging residents to report any koalas they see in the Shire and to let us know of their condition - whether they are healthy, sick, injured or deceased,” Mr Larkin said. “Data collected from individual sightings will provide Council with valuable information that can be used to assist Council with future conservation planning.” To report any sightings please fill out Council’s online koala records form by going to: www.kempsey.nsw.gov.au/koalas

MEMBER for Oxley Melinda Pavey has announced the 2017 round of recreational fishing trust grants have opened. Mrs Pavey is encouraging applications so more productive and unique projects can be delivered for recreational fishers. “Every year we see some terrific projects put in place to help improve the fishing experience,” she said. “Since 2001, hundreds of projects have been completed and some of the most popular projects include offshore artificial reefs, Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs), habitat repair works and boat ramp and cleaning-table upgrades.” Fish education programs for young people are also a success, with over 300 Fishcare volunteers and the Get Hooked program, which is now running in over 100 primary schools across the State.
The Trusts also fund smaller projects each year including fishing platforms, fishing workshops, the DPI FishSmart app, fishing guides and research on recreational fishing. The NSW Government is proud to support its recreational fishing sector, which generates $3.4 billion to the state’s economy each year and accounts for more than 14,000 full-time jobs. Fishing licence fees are reinvested each year to continue to improve NSW recreational fishing opportunities and accessibility. Applications for funding close on 24 November. Funding guidelines and application forms are available at www.dpi.nsw.gov. au

Let’s all become waterwise NATIONAL Water Week occurs October 15 - 21, and is a great reminder for us all to think about how we use water, and the water saving measures we have in place around our homes and businesses. The Port MacquarieHastings community is already doing a great job in conserving water, and with summer on its way, it’s a great time to review our water habits to continue to help protect our precious waterways and water catchment areas. “Our region is currently in a strong position as we head into the warmer weather, with storage levels in our dams at 94.7% capacity,” said Council Acting Group Manager, Clayton Miechel. “With our water storage in such a healthy position it is unlikely that we will need water restrictions this year, however it is good practice to stay mindful of water conservation given the extremely dry season we have been experiencing so far. “This year’s Water Week theme is ‘Water – the Heart of our Culture’, and encourages the community to explore how water plays such a strong role in our everyday lives, which is particularly relevant for us as we strive to protect our pristine waterways and beaches.” As part of an ongoing commitment to water education, Council is offering a number of free activities during National Water Week, as follows: Water Stories at the Library: (Free story time sessions, craft and visit from ‘Whizzy the Waterdrop’.) Targeted to preschool aged children (no bookings required) • Monday October 16, 10.30am - Wauchope Library; • Tuesday October 17, 10.30am - Port Macquarie Library; • Wednesday October 18, 10.30am - Laurieton Library. Catchment to Tap Water Tour: Free - Thursday 19 October (bookings essential).

Fine conditions for sprint opener THE first round of the Port Macquarie Sailing Club’s sprint series was held on Sunday in sunny conditions with a light but slowly strengthening easterly and the start of the run-in tide. The first race for the catamaran division was won on yardstick by Tony Kuhn on Stella from Dave Winter on Spica. Dave had to return to shore during the race to fix his mast that had jumped out of the mast step. Stella also beat Spica on handicap. The monohull fleet’s first race was won by Phillip and Blake Lillehagen in Elmo on yardstick. Tony Walker and his grandson, Jack, in Big Bang finished second ahead of Norman Broomhall and Sharon Carney in Jupiter. Big Bang won on handicap ahead of Elmo and Jupiter. Stella again beat Spica on yardstick in the catamaran’s second race, but Spica took the handicap win.
The second race for monohulls was looking like a clear-cut result, until a series of errors on a number of fronts let Jupiter win on yardstick. Elmo and Big Bang filled the minor placings. Jupiter also won on handicap ahead of Big Bang and Elmo. Again, Stella beat Spica on yardstick in the third catamaran race, and again, Spica beat Stella on handicap. Elmo beat Big Bang in the monohulls’ third race. Elmo also beat Big Bang on handicap. The fourth race for the catamarans was a repeat of the previous race, with Stella beating Spica on yardstick, and Spica winning on handicap. The fourth race for the monohulls was a bit of a non-event as the breeze strengthened, and Elmo was the only starter, but retired late in the race after a capsize. Next Sunday is race five of the spring series with a handicap start at 2pm. Paul Robertson is rostered on duty.
Phillip and Blake Lillehagen in Elmo, winner in the first round of the sprint series on both yardstick and handicap in the monohull division.

Timmy Trumpet is best known for his song with artist Savage called ‘Freaks’, which has been played in clubs and festivals around the world, but there’s one place he’d always rather be. “I’ve been away for five months to Europe, Asia, and America playing to crowds and now I’m back in Australia and there’s just no place like home,” Timmy said. “I love connecting with the crowds, whether its five people or 50,000. In Port Macquarie I can imagine there will be people travelling in from all the surrounding areas for this line-up and it’s going to be like an Australian reunion of all my mates.” Timmy already has a close affinity with Port Macquarie. “I have performed before in Port and it will always be the place that I used to visit as a kid because my aunty lives there and owns a restaurant there,” explained Timmy.
“It’s a really beautiful place and I can see myself ending up there.” The masterminds that brought Port Macquarie the Intensive club series have lived up to their promise of brining Australia’s biggest homegrown electronic dance music festival to a regional town. “I think that regional areas get into the music more because it’s a special occasion where as the bigger cities are more spoilt,” said Timmy. “I think that regional cities also have a better understanding of the important things in life and aren’t swept up in the rat race that is Sydney.” Port Macquarie has a diverse musical flavour and more and more young people are turning to music as a career. Timmy has a few tips. “If I can do this, anyone can,” Timmy said. “I feel like everyone is equal in life, no one is more special than anyone else and for anyone young out there who wants to do this, just really work hard. I just really love what I do – I love
connecting with people and I love seeing them enjoy themselves and feeling that energy back. It’s an addictive feeling.” Timmy’s fans will be pleased to hear of his new track and upcoming re-release. “I have a new track that has just come out called ‘Punjabi’, which I’m really excited about,” said Timmy. “I’ve also been granted permission to have a follow-up to my record with Savage and we’ve just finished our follow-up record together. “He’s so talented. When I wrote ‘Freak’ it didn’t really go anywhere and then he sang on it and it got re-released and it went straight to radio so I owe him a lot. He’s really nailed it and this vocal is even better. He’s a really talented guy and very humble too.” Tickets for the January 6 festival are $125 and $240 for VIP. For the full line-up and to purchase tickets visit www.livetix.com.au
