$100m for palliative care “
People suffering a terminal illness deserve the best possible care, whenever and wherever it’s needed
“
By BARBARA DYER A DESPERATE need for extra palliative care funding in the Port Macquarie/Hastings region has been addressed, with a $100 million injection by the NSW Government to services across the state. Tim Chapman, Community Programs Coordinator, Lower Mid North Coast at Cancer Council NSW, said the announcement was welcome news after years of campaigning by Cancer Council NSW and community advocates in the Port Macquarie/Hastings region. “The $100 million over four years is a significant boost to palliative care funding, and will make a real difference to people’s lives,” Mr Chapman said. “This funding is a first step to addressing the shortage of specialist palliative care. “Palliative care provides essential support to people living with a terminal illness and allows them to maintain their quality of life in a way that is meaningful to them. “People suffering a terminal illness deserve the best possible care, whenever and wherever it’s needed.” Mr Chapman said the funding would address a serious shortfall in the local region, although the exact breakdown of how the money would be shared state-wide was still to be explained. “We are seeking clarification on funding but one of our immediate and urgent needs is to have a full-time palliative care doctor in the Port Macquarie/Hastings region,” Mr Chapman said. “We have a doctor who is currently engaged part-time, working three days a week, and can now look forward to having a funding topup, which will make it a full-time physician’s position. “Also on our wishlist for the region, is extra funding for palliative care nursing positions. “This will allow us to offer an even greater level of care.” Mr Chapman said that currently palliative care beds were ‘chockers’ and services stretched. “We have excellent palliative care services at Wauchope and Bellingen and our general and private hospitals are also equipped to handle

these cases. But some people choose to spend their final days at home and that is another area where we would like to focus resources,” Mr Chapman said. “Another concern we hope to address through this extra funding, would ensure culturally appropriate palliative care for Aboriginal people. “This could mean anything from recognising and enabling them to maintain their deep connection to country during their care, through to the distribution of literature about the palliative care services available. “Hospital can be very confronting to anyone, but perhaps more so to Indigenous patients, and there is a need to facilitate appropriate care and understanding.” Mr Chapman said for years CanAct community volunteers, Push for Palliative campaign leaders and Cancer Council staff had kept the need for more palliative care in the hearts and minds of politicians. “This $100 million funding shows they have listened and it’s great news for affected families in Port Macquarie/Hastings,” he said.

Council needs a ‘devil’s advocate’ THE Council’s operational plan for the 2017-18 year has been approved. The Council is budgeting for a loss of $586,858. The operating profit is budgeted at $28 million after providing for depreciation (non-cash) of $45 million. Asset purchases of $112 million will be largely financed by the operating profit, depreciation and $48 million from the restricted assets reserves. The Council expects to repay $6.5 million in borrowings. If it goes to plan, I believe it will be a satisfactory result. The asset purchases of $112 million will comprise of $41 million for renewals and $72 million for new infrastructure. Transport and traffic (mainly roads) is budgeted at $26
The heat is on I THANK Matt Williams for his reply to my letter and I note that he too is interested in action on our environment, particularly our oceans and our forests. I share his concerns as these natural treasures are ravaged by political and corporate interests, and also increasingly by global warming, and I invite him to join our safe climate and clean energy group.
million, about half of which is for renewals. Water and sewerage are expected to cost around $30 million each and $4 million has been provided for upgrades to the airport – mostly for the terminal. Councillors praised the hard work of the staff and their diligence in preparing the plan. However, addressing weaknesses does not present well in the Council documents. Anyone who is experienced in business (and the Council is a business) knows that plans are not able to deliver on every problem, threat or opportunity. I am beginning to doubt whether the Council has prepared a formal strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities analysis – a must
for businesses before preparing the annual plans and budgets. If it has been done, have Councillors at least been able to review it before the operational plan was prepared? From the lack of critical comments, I would doubt it. The absence of a ‘devil’s advocate’ approach in Council meetings is disturbing. I would like to see as much thought being given by Councillors to what is not being expressed in Council motions as to what is being expressed. Each Councillor has a portfolio and attends meetings with staff which means that he or she has access to more detailed information. The Council staff draw up the motions for approval, it is absurd to think that
there are no difficulties or problems associated with the these. I urge Councillors to debate the motions with a more sceptical outlook instead of simply looking for ways to agree with the motions. To be fair, Councillors do present amendments to motions, usually adding some aspect that would improve it. However, I have yet to see (in four meetings attended) a Councillor put forward a motion of their own or ask a controversial question. I believe that Councillors opposing a motion should not just vote against it but should put forward their ideas. John Oxley Port Macquarie
However it is going low to question my motives and imply that I may be getting paid to do what I do. I am retired. I do not receive any payment for the work I do. I do it as a human being out of altruism and a respect for human civilisation and our children and grandchildren. Matt picks me up on two key indicators of climate change – warming of the planet and extreme weather events. I only have space here
to address the first although they are no doubt linked. There is a clear, undeniable warming trend underway. We can tell by global and local temperature data collected by thermometers in weather stations, aircraft, ships, and buoys at sea. 2016 was the world’s hottest year on record, and overtook the 2015 record, which surpassed the 2014 record. Three record hot years in a row sets another record in the
137-year history of modern, accurate and standardised meteorological observations. The twelve hottest years on record have occurred since 2000. In Australia the number of days per year over 35°C is increasing at 7% per decade. The extra heat we are trapping in the atmosphere guarantees we will get more such events, more intensely, more frequently and for longer. Harry Creamer Port Macquarie

PORT Macquarie’s Flynn’s Beach used to be the premier beach. Now it’s a sorry sight. Dead and dying trees, mud falls across the road, potholes and graffiti. But wait, four new unnecessary pedestrian signs.

WELL we’ve romped through to the new financial year and before we know it, it will be Christmas! In the meantime, there is a lot to cover in the next four weeks leading up to the July 29, by-election for Mayor of PMHC. There is so much that needs to be said and so many questions that need to be answered – I doubt we will get to cover it all. So, let’s look at the certainties. First and foremost – I think we should look at the cost to ratepayers. I met with Craig Swift-McNair for an informal chat a couple of weeks back and one of the topics of conversation was the cost to run an election. You need to know this. The election in September, 2016, cost the ratepayers in excess of $400,000. From my conversation with Craig, the by-election for one position on Council will be close to the same amount. So, it is safe to say that the ratepayers will have forked out $800,000 or more by July 29, over the two elections. That is a lot of money down the gurgler, whichever part of town you come from! Here’s the other certainty – if you vote for a sitting Councillor, i.e. Cr Griffith, Intemann or Turner and one of them becomes the new Mayor, we will be paying another $400,000+ and having another byelection, in just 12 short weeks. I’m not telling you how to vote. I’m asking how much more do you want to pay as a community?

So she educated herself with reading and travelling, I think she’s up to about 50-something cruises. “She also use to be in pantomimes as well as being a magician’s assistant. “She has a phenomenal memory and she always tells me the story of the first time she saw an airplane fly over. Lorraine also says that family and keeping positive has helped her mother get to where she is now. “Attitude to life and learning to accept what comes along and be happy with what you’ve got has helped her,” explained Lorraine. “Having something to look forward to is terribly important. You have to have some reason to get up in the morning and I think that’s why Home Instead have given her a new lease of life because all of a sudden there’s people coming and something happening around her all the time. “When she had the heart attack six weeks ago, on ANZAC Day, there was a concern she would have another one and permission was sought as whether to resuscitate and she turned around and said to me ‘I haven’t finished my book yet’ - that’s the attitude she has. “It was quite funny, and the sequel to the book she was reading was outside of the hospital room on a shelf and so I picked it up and took it into her the next day and said ‘you had better stick around a little longer because here’s the sequel.’ She enjoys life.” To find out more about Home Instead Senior Care visit https://portmacquarie.homeinstead. com.au

school with her little pot plant for the teacher and she got such a shock because she thought this big bird was chasing her. “She jumped over a fence and broke the pot plants. She was terrified, she didn’t know what it was. She’s had quite an exciting life.” Having Port Macquarie’s Home Instead Senior Care has allowed Myra to keep her independence and live in her own flat, just downstairs from her daughter. “They have been wonderful,” said Myra. “I have a lady who comes in on Tuesday and does housework for me and then the Wednesday I have another lady come for a couple of hours and she takes me shopping and then Thursday I have the cleaning lady again and she does anything that needs to be done and then on Friday I have another lady come and she takes me out for two or three hours and we quite often go down to the club and have lunch and play the pokies and then she brings me home.” And the question everyone wants to ask What’s Myra’s secret to a long life? “I think attitude has got a lot to do with it,” Myra said. “The genes play a big part and the hospitals and medical side of it is so wonderful. I was 90 and had an operation for cancer and got through it. Medical care has improved so much and that helps older people an awful lot.”

HAVING the right attitude is the key to long life. That’s the advice from a Port Macquarie resident who recently celebrated her 103rd birthday. Myra Benson was born on June 18, 1914, and says she has lived every day to her fullest. She has lived through a depression, world wars, and all the ups and downs of life. Now she is still as lively as ever and even lives independently thanks to a very loving family and also the assistance of Home Instead Senior Care. “She just turned 103 and we went out to dinner at Port City Bowling club with all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, her whole family was there,” said Lorraine Warren, Myra Benson’s daughter. “I’m her carer but we also have Home Instead come in every week. They are tremendous help, she’s just had a heart attack six weeks ago and we only just got the help then and she’s absolutely come back a million dollars now. She’s loving every minute of life and she loves having the company of somebody coming in nearly every day.” Myra was born in Sydney’s Redfern and has certainly had an extraordinary life. “She’s been involved in dancing most of her life and she’s lived through the Great Depression (1929-39) when her father was a builder. So they were the first lot out of work so they really struggled to eat and they lived very poorly,” said Lorraine. “She lived through

Kempsey Cinema ‘goes public’ By SUE PATERICK LOCAL residents have just under two weeks from July 4 to have their say on the Kempsey cinema project that saw Kempsey Shire Council cop stinging criticism from the Office of Local Government (OLG). In a five-page letter from the OLG’s Legal Director and Chairman of its Project Review Committee (PRC), Grant Gleeson, it was clear the PRC was unable to form a positive assessment of Council’s procedures and processes to date and advised Council it was unable to proceed with signing the cinema contract. It is part of the Public Private Partnership (PPP) guidelines that Council cannot proceed with the signing unless the PRC gives it the thumbs up. The PRC letter also stated Council had not fully considered adverse comments from independent consultants. It also contained 11 dot points outlining issues, such as Council appeared to be unnecessarily subsidising the cinema operators beyond what would be considered commercially viable to sustain the cinema’s operations. According to the PRC letter, there is no effective security given nor obvious means to repay the money needed for the project considering the $2 million loan and $2 million grant funds will be written off while Council incurs a potential liability of an additional $800,000. While the PRC acknowledged that Council appeared clear and accepting of this financial risk, it felt the community was not. The document also revealed that Council stated in its probity plan that there were two Development Applications (DAs) submitted for the project and were silent on this aspect during an independent third-party review. The Councillors voted on one of these DAs valued about $5 million to build the cinema at its December 20, 2016, meeting. In Council’s June, 2017, business paper a proposed response to the PRC stated that an
An artist’s impression of the proposed new Kempsey cinema independent assessment of the DAs was carried out, which recommended that it did not require determination by the Northern Joint Regional Planning Panel (NJRPP). Given Council’s inability to proceed with the project unless it receives a positive assessment from the PRC and adequately addresses the many issues raised in its letter, General Manager David Rawlings recommended the Councillors endorse the proposed timeframe and response as detailed in his report tabled at last Tuesday’s extraordinary meeting. Council endorsed that revised reports covering probity, public interest evaluation, long term financial management and risk management be placed on public exhibition prior to inclusion in the submission to the OLG. A face-to-face meeting with the PRC and its Chair had been requested as a matter of urgency, and Mr Rawlings suggested Council consider another community survey. Construction for the project was due to commence on July 1 for a December 2018 opening, but building contractor Gowing Bros has agreed to the minor time extension. Councillors Leo Hauville and Dean Saul voted against Mr Rawling’s recommendation, and have voted against this project consistently throughout its development application process. “The huge financial risk of the cinema project is still great because the numbers just don’t add up,” Cr Hauville said. “The project DAs should have gone to the NJRPP for independent assessment, just as the stated in the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act. “I was appalled to find out as a new Councillor that as an incentive of enabling the project, Council was to forgo just over $500,000
in development fees.” Dean Saul said as a businessman and a Councillor, he believed it would be fiscally irresponsible to proceed with a cinema project with the full knowledge that it would be a lossmaking proposal. “The community reaction to this proposal is one of sheer frustration,” he explained. “They are becoming increasingly anxious about the lack of available detail on the proposal, citing little community consultation due to details being kept confidential. “When the figures say that it is not viable, it means that the ratepayers will be effectively subsidising the cinema for years to come.” Councillor Bruce Morris is not against a cinema in Kempsey but cannot support the current proposal. He voted for the recommendation at last Tuesday’s meeting after moving an amendment to release all documents, except legal agreements, between Council and the OLG in relation to the PPP approval process. “This amendment was moved to strengthen Council’s openness and transparency and help to ensure that the community was aware of the financial risks,” Cr Morris said. “That would show good faith in the community.” Only Councillors Hauville and Saul supported his amendment so it wasn’t adopted. “I think Council needs to stop filtering information through rose-coloured glasses and advise the community of the potential financial risk of the project.” Cr Morris added. Kempsey Mayor Liz Campbell said Council had been working with industry experts and advisors for three years to investigate and plan the cinema project, including experts in the rapidly
changing retail and entertainment sectors. “Part of council’s role is to identify community needs and aspirations and plan strategically for future economic growth,” she added. “This project will stimulate economic growth, provide jobs and address the 43% retail leakage from Kempsey CBD.” In answer to why constructing more buildings in a town with several empty ones was a good idea, Cr Campbell said no other site delivered the combination of essential criteria such as the ability to boost foot traffic, potential spending to existing CBD businesses and the willingness of a landlord to contribute significant investment dollars to the project. While Cr Campbell acknowledges there could be a financial risk, she believes that Council has considered the cinema project with the highest levels of scrutiny and assessment at every step. “For me personally, the impact of not investing in our economic and social prosperity in the CBD of Kempsey would be far more damaging than partnering with private industry to fill a gap in the services our community wants and needs,” Cr Campbell added. The revised documents will be placed on public exhibition for 14 days from July 4, with Council’s submission to the PRC brought to Council for endorsement at its meeting on July 18. The documents are on display at Council’s Customer Services Centre in Tozer Street, West Kempsey or visit www.kempsey.nsw.gov.au/ cinema

Above and below: Some of the magnificent machines that were at last year’s Yesteryear Truck and Machinery Show at Wauchope. This weekend’s promises to be even bigger and better.
Wauchope’s blast into the past By BARBARA DYER
THE smell of diesel will mingle with the scent of the sausage sizzle when the annual Yesteryear Truck and Machinery show splutters into life at Wauchope this weekend. Lovingly restored, gleaming trucks and tractors, and old-timers ‘in working clothes’, will mingle with late model workhorses. Fans of vintage cars, historic trucks and classic motorbikes will come from far and wide to the show which has been growing in popularity since it started more than a dozen years ago. Vice president of the Wauchope Yesteryear Truck and Machinery club, Mark Johnson, expects the ‘shed tragics’ to be out in force and has no doubt it will be an even bigger show than last year’s when about 3000 visitors rocked up. Mark is hoping to see the quality relics return from last year; the 1920s Republic truck, the big old Mack trucks that boast local logging heritage; the restored International crawlers; and stationary engines that do everything from husk corn to chaff wheat. And he’s looking forward to renewing
friendships too with trucking and tractor contingents expected to chug in from paddocks as far away as Port Augusta, Dubbo, Tamworth, Macksville, Wollongong and Newcastle. “It’s always a great weekend,” says Mark. “Plenty to look at, whether you’re into vintage cars, motorbikes, old trucks, dozers or farm equipment. “There will be a swap meet where people might find a part they have been trying to get their hands on, and other stalls with everything from bric-a-brac and leather goods to quilts and embroidery. “There will be some trash and treasure for everyone. It will be a real marketplace
atmosphere for the whole family to enjoy.” Mark will have a bit of a display himself, the spray painter and panel beater bringing with him a 1964 Diamond T, a classic BSA Bantam motorbike, a 1946 Commer lorry and a miniature truck he built with his own hands. Mark bought the lightweight two-stroke for sentimental reasons - he’d owned a Bantam bike when he was younger on the farm. He adds sentiment is a common reason for starting a collection, with owners often restoring a piece of kit they have uncovered on the family farm or perhaps just wanting to keep grandad’s old truck in the family for the next generation. And while it’s usually ‘hands-off’’ for the
gleaming vintage cars with their polished paintwork and leather seats that bear the patina from years of love, Mark says he’s fine with letting the public come close to his trucks for a better look. “That’s what we’re here for,” he says. The grand parade is always a highlight with a variety of vehicles lumbering, chugging, spluttering and puttering their way around the showground track. “I remember when we had the first show about 14 years ago. We had 16 entries in the trucks and thought that was good,” says Mark. “Last year we had about 90 trucks and we’re expecting greater numbers in all sections this year.” Local charities and groups will benefit from the day, with a charity auction on Saturday night and main beneficiaries being Westpac Helicopter, Wauchope Palliative Care Hospital, Riding for the Disabled and Bundaleer Nursing Home. Exhibitors will be setting up on Friday with the event to run July 8-9 at the Wauchope Showground. Gates open 9am on Saturday and Sunday.

Could your vote cost ratepayers $400,000? The upcoming by-election to be held on Saturday July 29th could have expensive and inconvenient consequences for our community. At the end of this month we are being dragged back to the polling booths for a second time to select a new Mayor to lead our community. At the last election only 3 candidates came forward being Peter Besseling, Sharon Griffiths and myself, (Peta Pinson). Those of you who voted in the September 2016 election will know, I came second to the Mayor in that election with almost 30% of the primary vote. This time around there are five candidates for the Mayoral role and three of those are already elected current Councillors being; Cr Sharon Griffiths, Cr Lisa Intemann and Cr Robert Turner. The other two candidates are myself (Peta Pinson) and Lauren Edwards (The Greens Party). It is important our community goes to the polls being informed, as a vote for a current sitting councillor will send us back to the polling booth again this year for a second by-election. That would mean a possible third election for our Council in only 12 months. Simply put, should any of the three councillors be elected as Mayor, the seat they hold on council will be vacated and will need to be filled by means of another by-election at a further cost to the ratepayer. It is estimated that the cost of the September election was just over half a million dollars whilst this upcoming by-election is estimated to be around four hundred thousand dollars which will be paid for by the ratepayers of the Port Macquarie Hastings area. Further to the cost is the inconvenience to our community to participate in the democratic process of voting. Think about the difficulties that the frail, the sick and the disabled experience during this time, who are all expected to make their way to a polling booth to vote. There are only two candidates who will not cause the community any further inconvenience or cost after this by-election. I am one of the two who will bring about a fresh perspective and make our Council accountable. A vote for PINSON is a vote against a costly second by-election. The choice is yours. I welcome your comments about what is important to you and can be emailed at pinson4mayor@gmail.com or contact my office on 6585 2519. Winter tips for campers FROM elevating the humble Winter beanie to debunking myths about how to stay warm in a sleeping bag - more than 60 managers from 36 holiday parks from coastal and country NSW have pulled together their collective knowledge to ensure families have a fun Winter caravanning or camping adventure. The tips, which range from sensible clothing advice to fun ways to keep warm like snuggling your loved ones around a camp fire come from the NSW Crown Holiday Parks Trust (NSWCHPT) Group which manages 36 holiday parks across NSW and encompass North Coast Holiday Parks (NCHP), South Coast Holiday Parks (SCHP) and Inland Waters Holiday Parks (IWHP). NSWCHPT CEO Steve Edmonds said park teams and the collective knowledge of the Group represented decades of camping experience in all kinds of weather so families could rest assured that the best advice was on hand to help families and campers have a great holiday. Top Winter camping thoughts include: 1. The humble beanie is a good move as it prevents lots of heat loss. 2. The Ugg Boot, (or equivalent), should be on any serious Glamper’s winter check list. 3. Thermals are also an option if you’re too far away from a warm house. 4. Select a good quality sleeping bag. There are some very good ones on the market now. 5. Why not prepare some yummy stews, soups and hearty foods prior to arriving; they will certainly keep you fuelled with warmth and energised to play. 6. Make sure you air your tent daily to prevent condensation build up which makes the inside damp and uncomfortable. 7. When the ground is cold; use foam floor tiles on the tent floor to give an extra layer of insulation. 8. Don’t camp in a valley or watercourse and position your tent to take full advantage of the warming morning sun. 9. Wear a beanie to bed and keep your head out of your sleeping bag as a night of breathing may cause your sleeping bag to become damp. 10. Put glow sticks in water bottles for a game of night time bowling or place them around a tent’s guy ropes to prevent trip hazards. Mr Edmonds said each park also shared their top tips on keeping warm in a tent this Winter, with the consensus being to make sure plenty of thermals and woollen socks were packed, water bottles were not forgotten and hot thermoses of hot chocolate were on hand. “My best tip is to prepare and plan ahead for the expected weather and don’t forget to have fun”, Mr Edmonds said.

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker
Federal Member for Cowper
THIS week, the NDIS is officially being rolled out in our region. This program is a significant redesign of the way that people living with a disability receive care and support, providing them with choice and control over the services they receive and how they access them. Port Macquarie, along with Nambucca, Coffs Harbour and Kempsey, has a dedicated Local Area Coordination (LAC) office to handle all of the planning, implementation and review of the individual plan of each person with a disability living in the region. These LAC offices are here to provide support to people living with a disability, their carers, families and service providers. Any question about the scheme and how it affects you can be answered by the qualified staff who work in these premises. They will help develop a plan which consists of achievable goals for the person with the disability to work towards, with help from their support services. Thank you to the 124 people who came along to the NDIS Information Session at Panthers. If you have questions about the NDIS and want to speak with someone, visit the Port Macquarie LAC office at Suite 5, 53 Lord Street. If you can’t make it in in person, you can always call on 1800 522 679. For more info visit ndis.gov.au.
Beer and footy means we’re just blokes
HAVE you ever used the word blokess? I haven’t, but I know some who have. Blokess was a popular term in the period from 1900. It was used by the Melbourne Standard, the Truth, the Gundagai Independent, The Adelaide News, the World’s News in Sydney, words author Sidney Baker, other authors and the Townsville Bulletin a few times, plus other publications. Some of those publications have gone out of existence, or at least I haven’t heard of them. The word is described in The Australian National Dictionary as “a woman , used elsewhere but chiefly Australian”. It comes from bloke at a time when ess was added to many other words, such as actress. You won’t find it in many dictionaries. The Sydney Austral says blokess is a well documented egalitarian Australian tradition. The Gundagai Independent reported in 1926: “After the children have danced themselves tired the big blokes and blokesses will take the floor.” Sidney Baker said a blokess was a female bloke. I didn’t set out to write about blokess. That was a distraction. I set out to write about bloke. Here is a word that is recognised as Australian, but only partly Australian. It goes back to at least 1250. It is recognised as English, or Romany, or gypsy. Collins says it is an informal word used
my
LAURIE BARBER
in British English. My Australian National Dictionary says a bloke is a person in authority or of superior status. That rules out most of my friends. But it does say it is transferred use of man, fellow. My big dictionary agrees. Readers Digest says the word is subtle in Australia and the meaning depends on how the word is said. Author and wordsmith Michael Quinion says the word, for a male person, is traditionally British, recorded from the early 19th century. He wonders if it is a variation on the slightly older gloak (a pickpocket) or even blake (a bloke who was hanged for housebreaking), or even broak (a gentleman). Quinion says it took off in Australia, where it was used for some person of status, even for a ship’s commander. But Quinion says the experts aren’t sure where the word came from. He suggests the word
could come from Romany, or from some gypsies. I like his suggestion that it refers to a stupid person, such as a blockhead. Sidney Baker says bloke achieved greater currency in Australia than in England. He gives an example of irritability “like a bloke with boils on his arse”. But I wondered why the bloke was irritable in the first place. I know, he had boils. Then we come to the Australian Dictionary of Insults and Vulgarities, which I refer to often. It says some blokes are pretty good blokes; others are not so. Bill Hornage in his Australian Slanguage says bloke refers to a casual acquaintance. It appears in a poem that goes on and on, over several pages. John (Nino) O’Grady says some blokes are not worth feeding, but most of the blokes will put their hands in their pockets to buy you a drink – “proving there are more good blokes than bad blokes”. GA Wilkes quotes CJ Dennis in the line “blokes an ‘coves an’coots and says bloke could always be the person in authority. Susan Butler in The Dinkum Dictionary suggests bloke comes from the gypsies and means a man in authority. I like the Macquarie Dictionary definition: “Blokey behaviour means to drink beer and watch the footy.” lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

A model way to enjoy weekend By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC HUNDREDS of scaled-down ships, boats, planes, trains and more will be on display at this weekend’s annual Panther’s Model Expo. The two-day expo has been on the Panther Club Calendar for more than 15 years due to its popularity. “We’ve 100 tables booked so there’s quite a big display,” said Allan Masters from the Port Macquarie Modellers. “There will be model airplanes and big airplanes that are a few feet long, with some of these getting up to 2 or 3 metres long.” A wide range of hobbies will be on display including radio-controlled ships, cars and aircraft, period ships, working railways, and steam engines. “They’re very sophisticated,” Allan said. “We’ve got a member who’s into trains and he’s got a Thomas the Tank Engine train he runs along the rail and it’s 12-14 inches long. It’s really fantastic because it’s computer-controlled and makes sounds and the eyes roll, just like Thomas’ does. We’ve also got model cars,
Above and right: Some of the models on show this weekend at Panthers trucks, and a lot of them are remote controlled.” There are literally hundreds of hours spent working on these intricate models, but it’s all for fun says Allan. “I just like making little things,” explained Allan. “I’ve always made models and I’ve just gravitated to boats in the last 10 years, I was making little planes before, so you just grow with the hobby. “Our oldest member is Rob and he’s 84 and he makes beautiful boats and he’s also into trains. Then you’ve also got 20-year-olds who get really into it and when we have these shows we even have a few teenagers come through who take a
little look and want to know how we do things. So the expo is really for everybody.” Technology has certainly changed the game for making models. “I have a big model trawler that has a sound system built into it. It’s run by an ordinary electric motor with a battery power supply that goes into the boat, but in saying that it is synchronized with a computer chip and it’s a diesel engine and it pumps out sound as the diesel is pumping the boat.” Visitors will see models constructed from timber, brass, fiberglass, and even paper. Plastic scale models will include ships, armoured
fighting vehicles, aircraft and even science fiction figures. People will get the opportunity to watch models being constructed and will also get to see them in action with model ships and speedboats demonstrated on the canal behind the Panthers Club if weather permits. A selection of supplies of hobby kits, tools, and materials will be available. The Panthers Club also provides the convenience of food and beverages on site. The Panther’s Model Expo will take place on Saturday, July 8, from 9am to 5pm and Sunday, July 9, from 9am to 4pm at the Panthers Club, Settlement City, 1 Bay Street, Port Macquarie. Entry is by gold coin donation, which will go towards raising funds for the Port Macquarie Maritime Museum.

Cold snap brings an increased risk of residential fires WITH winter well and truly here, Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is urging residents to take every precaution to avoid a fire in the home. FRNSW Community Safety and Research Chief Superintendent Jeremy Fewtrell said the cooler months see a 10% increase in the number of home fires, with more fires in bedrooms and loungerooms due to heaters, electric blankets and the like. “Don’t put yourself or your family at risk. We want to remind people to be careful when using heaters and to keep everything in the house ‘a metre from the heater’,” he said. There are a number of other simple steps you can take to prepare your home against the risk of fire this winter:
• Turn off heaters and electric blankets before leaving home or getting into bed; • Clean lint filters in the clothes dryer before or after each use; • Don’t overload powerboards; • Keep candles away from curtains and put them out before leaving the room; • Don’t use LPG cylinders for cooking or heating indoors as they can leak and the gas is both toxic and highly explosive; • Ensure you have a working smoke alarm. Chief Superintendent Fewtrell said residents should also ‘keep looking when cooking’ to avoid kitchen fire catastrophes. “Kitchen fires account for 45 per cent of all residential fires and 34 per cent of injuries in
NSW. Flames or heat sources being left unattended are the most common cause contributing to kitchen fires. It can take just three minutes for a fire to take hold, but only seconds to prevent one,” he said. “To avoid kitchen fire catastrophes, we urge people to “keep looking when cooking”. It’s a simple way to avoid losing your home or even worse, your loved ones or your own life.” FRNSW recommends the following simple safety checklist for home cooks: • Never leave cooking unattended. If you leave the kitchen, turn off the stove. It takes just three minutes for a fire to take hold, but only seconds to prevent one;
• Don’t put anything metallic in the microwave; • Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children; • Don’t cook under the influence of alcohol or drugs; • Turn pot handles inwards to avoid being knocked or grabbed by children; • Keep your oven and rangehood clean. Excess grease and fat can ignite in a fire; • If your pan catches fire, don’t throw water on it – get out, stay out and call tripple zero ‘000’. Chief Superintendent Fewtrell said if you remember these simple rules, you’ll be on your way to having a safe, fire-free winter. For more information: www.fire.nsw.gov.au

New managers at popular kiosk
By KEITH McMULLEN
HEALTHY alternatives and winter warmers are some of the new additions to be added to the menu at the Horseshoe Bay kiosk after the recent take-over by new managers Gayle and Bruce Edwards. As Reserve Trust Manager, Kempsey Shire Council looks after the building on behalf of the Department of Crown Lands. The iconic local eatery is located in a prime position overlooking both South West Rocks main beach and popular Horseshoe Bay. The Edwards hail from the Macleay Valley and have recently returned to the area after living away for work. “We wanted to take on a new challenge of operating and running our own business as well as being able to live and work in South West Rocks,” Gayle said. “Bruce and I entered into this business venture wanting to make the kiosk a favourite amongst both the locals and the visitors for providing great service and good quality food whilst they enjoy taking in the picturesque views of Horseshoe and Trial Bays. “South West Rocks is a beautiful part of Australia. It’s a friendly town and is picturesque no matter where you look.” The Edwards have kept the same menu but plan on adding some healthy alternatives and comfort foods during the colder months. “This menu has been tried and it is favourable amongst the locals, but in saying this, we will be introducing new items to the menu to cater for those wishing to enjoy a healthier alternative,” Gayle said. “During winter we plan on adding homemade soups and hearty style meals to the menu as specials, as well as offering delicious treats to enjoy whilst sipping on a hot beverage.” Gayle and Bruce thanked former managers Sharon and Glen Cook for 11 years of service and also acknowledged the 10 employees of the kiosk for their support, guidance and patience during the transition phase.
‘TOGETHER as One’ was the theme for last Friday night’s NAIDOC Week local Aboriginal art celebration held at Sea Acres. NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people each year during the first week of July. ‘Nyiirun Wakulda’ - Together As One, was a local celebration of Aboriginal art and culture. A welcome to all was extended from local Aboriginal elder Uncle Bill O’Brien on behalf of the Port Macquarie Birpai mob. The evening’s program, outlined by Angela Marr-Grogan from the Jacaranda House Creative Hub, featured a wide variety of local Aboriginal paintings - some brighty coloured and some a more subtle tone. A short film highlighted the beauty of Port Macquarie’s coastline and the local Birpai people’s association to it, tracing its past and its stewardship being passed onto today’s young generation for its future care. The film and Uncle Bill’s address spoke of the land as ancient and sacred, and the need for all of Port’s residences to appreciate its wonder and life-giving abundance. Rhonda Radley also extend a welcome in the Gathang language. Rhonda then led the Djiyagan Dhanhaan (Strong Sister), Ngarrgan Mirriiyn singing group into a song in Gathang Language. This was followed by a stirring didgeridoo and traditional dance performance by Doongang Dancers. Local Aboriginal artist Wayne Anderson, who had two works of art displayed titled ‘Under the Tee Tree’ and ‘Buledalah Dreaming’ featured, spoke of inclusion being relevant to all Australians. The land of Australia binds and belongs to us all. And, in that sense all the people of Australia are one people, he said. The works of art will continue to be on

Info session on assisted dying IN Port Macquarie at this very minute, there are people for whom life means agonising pain and death has become their only wish. These terminally ill people currently have no legal avenues to die as they choose, as time strips away their quality of life, day by awful day. For voluntary assisted dying advocate Trevor Khan, MLC it’s a subject close to his heart, having watched his father suffer for years before his death in 2012. Mr Khan is on the NSW Parliamentary Working Group on Assisted Dying and, in conjunction with Dying with Dignity Mid North Coast, will host a community information session in Port Macquarie on July 11. It’s another step towards giving people the ultimate life and death choice and attendees will be brought up to speed and invited for input into the Draft Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2017 (NSW) which was released in May. The death of his father Dr Keith Khan, is uppermost in Trevor Khan’s thoughts and makes him a caring and driven advocate for the Bill. “Dad was a GP in Wollongong and, during his 50 years of practice, he no doubt assisted patients at the end of their life. But when he made that request to my sister and me, we were unable to help,” recalls Mr Khan. “He went in to hospital for a colonoscopy with instructions that should cancer be found in his bowel, he was to be left alone. “He had a plan; he would not be hanging around.” But before the colonoscopy, the doctor suffered a stroke, leaving him profoundly debilitated and with no control over his own body.
Working group THE NSW Parliamentary Working Group on Assisted Dying consists of Alex Greenwich MP (Independent), the Hon Trevor Khan MLC (Nationals), Lee Evans MP (Liberal), Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC (Greens) and the Hon Lynda Voltz MLC (Labor). The object of this Bill is to provide a legislative framework for the rights of terminally ill persons to request and receive assistance to end their lives voluntarily. Under this framework, certain terminally ill persons may be assisted by their medical practitioners and other nominated persons to administer a substance to themselves. The Bill provides protection for persons providing such assistance and sets up safeguards against possible abuse of the right recognised by the Bill.
Assisted dying advocate Trevor Khan “He had asked for our help but we denied that help, thinking he would die quickly,” says Mr Khan. “Instead, he continued to deteriorate, and we witnessed – felt – his suffering for three-and-ahalf years. “There was nothing we could do and nothing he could do to help himself die. “I want that to change.” Previous public meetings have drawn groups of 50-75 people and Mr Khan says those with personal experience are the ones most likely to
attend. “I will say that I have been surprised at the lack of confrontation or protest to the exposure draft,” says the former solicitor. “We have learned from the failures in other states of clumsily written Draft Bills to Voluntary Assisted Dying and endeavoured to ensure NSW has a carefully drawn Bill, pre-empting where it might face opposition or defeat. “For that reason, we have put in some extra safeguards such as a psychology report and reports from both a primary and secondary

physician, including a specialist in the field of whichever illness the patient is suffering. “Since the release of the Draft Bill, 70 specialist organisations and groups, including Dying with Dignity Mid North Coast, have been invited to give their views on the framework developed in the Bill. “It is incumbent on the Working Group however to also hear from the wider community across NSW, to ensure that the framework meets the high expectations of the community.” The Draft Bill covers all areas from the relationship between doctor and patient, to the age of the nominee assisting the patient. Copies of the Draft Bill with explanatory notes will be available, items discussed and questions invited at the meeting to be held at the Rushcutters Room, Port Panthers, from 11am – 1pm, on Tuesday, July 11. The draft can also be accessed online with submissions and comment open until July 17.

Rodeo reward
THE annual Blue Moon Bull-riding charity event has been set down for November 25 this year. Over the past five years running the event organisers have raised more than $38,500 in donations by holding the annual rodeo at Kempsey showground. The most recent rodeo raised $10,500 for the Westpac Helicopter Service. The popular rodeo attracts some of the country’s top bull riders - but the family atmosphere, and great cause, helps to attract large crowds. Gathering recently were Blue Moon’s Pete Farley, centre, Mark Haywood, from major sponsor Ray White Rural Kempsey (white shirt) and Westpac Helicopter committee volunteers, from left, John Ward, Bruce Cant, Betty Ezzy, Shirley Cant and Kathy Ward.
Dune volunteers make a difference THE rehabilitation of high value coastal vegetation between the Macleay River entrance and South West Rocks Creek is benefiting from an ongoing partnership between North Coast Local Land Services and South West Rocks Dunecare. The funding for this long-term community landcare project is targeted towards the rehabilitation of a stand of critically endangered littoral rainforest on Crown Land located between South West Rocks Creek and Back Beach. The ongoing rehabilitation of this area will provide a number of benefits including increased biodiversity values, stabilisation of sand dunes preventing further erosion, increased tourism
values and increased outdoor recreation value for the local community. Kieran Berry, Land Services Officer with North Coast Local Land Services said of the project: “The area running directly northeast of the footbridge over South West Rocks Creek is the main focus for this project, with the funding allowing for extensive follow up regeneration works on the once heavily weed-infested site. “Previous volunteer work has dramatically reduced the density of many weeds at this site including lantana, senna, mickey mouse plant and asparagus fern,” Kieran said. South West Rocks Dune Care have demonstrated a long term commitment to
improving local natural areas. Currently led by President Ian Burnett and Secretary Alan Hill, the group has grown over the last 20 years and currently boasts a long term membership of over 80 people. They regularly have more than 20 at each monthly working bee, dedicating their weekends or other spare time to the cause. Kieran continued: “The tireless efforts of the group are spread over many parts of the coast around South West Rocks and the knowledge of how to best manage these areas, built up over many years, is a resource in itself. Over the years the group has learnt how to improve native vegetation communities through coordinated efforts with public land managers.”

Luke Hartsuyker with his donor card
Ride to boost donor numbers NATIONALS Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker has officially launched the ‘Donate Life’ Organ Donor Registration Ride, which will take place on August 5. Alongside keen motorcyclists Father Michael Alcock and biker John from North Coast V-Twins, Mr Hartsuyker launched the ride with the goal of increasing organ donor registration throughout the electorate of Cowper and promoting the cause within the region. The motorcycle ride takes place towards the conclusion of ‘Donate Life’ Week, the national week to encourage all Australians to register their donation decision and to discuss their donation decisions with their loved ones. Mr Hartsuyker and an estimated 50 riders will travel from Coffs Harbour Jetty Foreshore to Westport Bowls Club in Port Macquarie, with a short stop in Kempsey, riding the length of the Cowper electorate. “With recent changes to the way
our organ donor registry works, many people think they are registered but it might not be the case,” Mr Hartsuyker said. “I recommend everyone, even if you think you’ve already registered, to go to the new online registration form and fill it out. It only takes a couple minutes.” “The motorcycle ride on August 5th will be a fantastic event shining some light on a very important cause.” Just one in three Australians is registered to donate their organs, should the worst occur, with only eight per cent of people aged 18-24 registered. To register to become an organ donor, visit donatelife.gov.au. Anyone wanting to be part of the ride on August 5th can register, via the registration form, at lukehartsuyker. com.au/ride. The event will be capped at 50 participants, so register today to secure your place.

An event worth celebrating By SUE PATERICK
WEATHER-WORN hunks of wood from Crescent Head’s iconic old footbridge were given a new lease of life as trophies for the inaugural Crescent Head Community Surf Rally and were dusted off last Friday night at a special business event. Initiator of the surf rally held back on March 18, Roger (Fergo) Fergusson, said 60 local surfers took part and it was a well-supported and fantastic surfing, music and food festival held to celebrate Crescent Head. Last Friday evening’s function was held to say thanks to everyone involved and sponsors Coastline Credit Union, Aleeda Wetsuits, Crescent Head Tavern, Crescent Head Surf Co., The Green Room, Beach Break Restaurant, Barnett’s Bakery, Blackfish and Pandanus. And while it was a chilly night outside, inside the modern and inviting restaurant of The Med Crescent Head it was as warm as the friendly atmosphere. Made by Peter Farley, the six trophies were given to winners at the surf rally on the day but were now required to go back on display at the local business houses who sponsored them. “The trophies are a reminder of the surf rally and the community coming together,” Fergo said. “Crescent Head is unique and we know how lucky were are to live here.” Kempsey Shire Councillor Mark Baxter showed his support for the surf rally and introduced Fergo at Friday night’s event. Fergo went on to thank the local businesses and community, Kempsey Shire Council and the Crescent Head Malibu Club for all their incredible support. “Crescent Head is a jewel in the Macleay Valley’s crown and we have to protect it,” Fergo said.

Crescent Head Community Surf Rally winners, Dan Johnson, Maxine Wallace and Josh Shorrock with Frank Barnett, The Med restaurateur Friedy Meinel, Jennifer Birrer, and the man who made the trophies Peter Farley “We want to see this place valued and preserved and want any change to be managed delicately.” Also speaking at the function, Kempsey Mayor Liz Campbell explained how Crescent Head was her local beach and how she swam there as a school girl. “Crescent has the best surf beaches in the world and it has great people who got behind the surf rally concept,” she said. “That event and tonight has brought the community together to celebrate our surfing
culture and to acknowledge the business community who have provided the services.” Winners of the surf rally’s six events were Dan Johnson in the Junior Malibu, Peter Lobb for Senior Malibu, Dennis Moore in Old Mal, Marcus Cooper for the Open Malibu, Maxine Wallace in Ladies Malibu and Josh Shorrock in the Retro event. Blues must be mentally tough
Blues coach Laurie Daley
COULD Suncorp Stadium be the venue for two sporting upsets within a week and a half? Firstly we had local hero Jeff Horn edge out boxing royalty Manny Pacquiao in a massive sporting spectacle at the Queensland home of rugby league last weekend. Next Wednesday night the Maroons take on the Blues in The Decider! Now, a Maroons’ series win would not be in the same league of upsets as Horn, however there is no doubt the Queenslanders are the outsiders. The early market has the Blues at $1.80 and the Maroons at $2.00. The loss of JT and Boyd are big blows for the northerners. While Hunt and Munster are handy replacements they are not in the same league as the two missing faces. However the biggest hurdle for NSW are themselves. They have the team to seal this series and start their own dynasty.

They proved that in Origin 1 and should have nailed that coffin closed in Origin 2. However the Maroons’ mental toughness won through. There has been plenty of heat on both Origin coaches during this series, but Laurie Daley must find a way for his team to get back to the mindset of Game 1. Then they appeared set on one thing – victory. In Game 2 for the first 40 mins it was the same, but then the doubts crept in. In the NRL, just four games this weekend. Roosters v Rabbitohs (Friday, July 7, 7.50pm, Allianz Stadium, Sydney): So hard to gauge a form line with some of these teams. The Roosters had been in great form and then were smashed by the Sharks last weekend. Meanwhile the Rabbits, after an ordinary start to the season are rolling towards a possible finals berth. • Your Local Independent tips: Rabbitohs Panthers v Sea Eagles (Saturday, July 8, 5.30pm, Pepper Stadium, Penrith): Panthers

are still a final eight chance, but lost momentum last weekend when thumped by the Rabbits. While Manly are looking more and more like the real deal. May be a home game for Penrith, but that’s why this result will hurt even more. • Your Local Independent tips: Sea Eagles Storm v Eels (Saturday, July 8, 7.30pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): So hard to tip against the Storm … even with their Origin contingent out. But the Eels deserve some respect after climbing into the eight. • Your Local Independent tips: Eels Bulldogs v Knights (Sunday, July 9, 4pm, Belmore Sports Ground, Sydney): Talking of respect … the Dogs have lost some this year, but this game is one they will not let themselves lose. If the Knights had been able to get over top of the Tigers last weekend they may have had a roll-on into this one. But that didn’t happen. • Your Local Independent tips: Bulldogs

Qld v NSW (Wednesday, July 12, 8pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Here it is, the big one. As stated earlier, NSW deserve to be favourites. The Maroons have lost two of their best (JT and Boyd), however filling that void is a massive home ground advantage. The Maroons will be lifted by the ‘Lang Park Factor’, but that atmosphere also has the potential to also inspire the Blues. NSW have a big advantage in playing the same 17 (fingers crossed with a couple of injury concerns) for all three Origins this year. That is big. Players know who is around them. Good combinations become even better. • Your Local Independent tips: NSW
