Forget the seven-year itch, this is....
70 years of bliss By CHRISTINA PARKIN
SEVENTY years is a milestone more often linked to lifespan, but as a duration for marriage, it is so rare that a celebratory card can’t be found. Ivan and Gloria Moore met at the pictures as part of a group when Gloria was 17. It was during the Second World War when Ivan was working for PDS (Producers Distributing Services) in Wollongong. At the time, distributing foodstuffs was classed as a protected industry and essential service. Gloria had been working at a real estate agent, but as she was single and the youngest of nine, Gloria had to leave work to care for her mum who had a heart attack during the war years. “Not that I minded as I adored my Mum, but after she passed I also had to look after my Dad, who was not so easy to care for,” explains Gloria. “I wasn’t even attracted to Ivan. Although he was a very snappy dresser, I felt he looked too much like a gangster.” “Yet she came out perfect every time,” says Ivan of his petite wife’s appearance. Gloria’s parents were very strict and although they courted for four years, it wasn’t until Gloria was 18 that Ivan was allowed to come home. • Continued Page 3

Surf girls eye Classic By CHRISTINA PARKIN
IF you think surfing is a male-dominated activity, then you only need think of the likes of Layne Beachley and Stephanie Gilmore to know that the sport has a healthy contribution from female surfers. One event supporting female surfers has been held for the last 13 years as the Mid North Coast Girls Surf Classic at Bonny Hills’ Rainbow Beach. This year’s Classic will be held over two days this weekend. Contest director Jo Astorini, from the Mid North Coast Girls Surfrider’s Club, says that it’s a great family sport and event. “We are a community-based club providing a service for surfer girls on the Mid North Coast, promoting girls’ surfing, fun, fitness and friendship in a non-threatening environment,” explains Ms Astorini. “It’s also the only sport that dads get directly involved with their daughters at the ‘caddy’ level for under 12-year-olds. Their ‘caddy daddy’ is allowed to enter the water with their daughter and assist them onto the waves. “We have 18 girls so far entered trying to win that division.” It is the continued support from local businesses and community partnerships that permits the Mid North Coast Girls Surfriders to host an event which includes a unique contest
format that encourages all girls and women, regardless of their age or ability, to compete in a non-threatening environment. All competitors surf two rounds in their respective divisions on Saturday, then their results from both rounds are tallied together. The top six surfers progress to the finals on Sunday. This format encourages participation and focuses on surfing consistently over the two-day event instead of a straight knockout competition. “Surfing for girls has certainly evolved from the past stereotype of ‘chicks on the beach’ to a movement that sees many women maintaining their involvement long after their daughters have moved on or away,” says Ms Astorini. “The over-40s category is now the most popular, and we have a lot of women who come each year to be part of it just to help out. “We even have a lot of brothers and dads helping out – an amazing amount of support from the parents.” Peter Muir and Dave Smith, both from Bonny Hills, spend two days in the tower judging the girls. For them, they claim, it is a ‘weekend away’ from their usual weekend pursuits with the Bonny Hills Surf Lifesaving Club. The Nashyspix Open Longboard division has Port Macquarie’s Kelly Brown returning for another year and will be hotly contested
by Mandy Penhall, from Taree, and Elaine Gonzalez and Maddi Walker from Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Lake Cathie’s Robyn Wallace and Bonny Hills’ Leanne Hopwood will be competing in the Ocean Club Resort Over 55’s Longboard and are up against strong opposition from the Lennox Head All Girls surfer Marg Bryant, who at the age of 65, continues to excel in the sport. The Mid North Coast Girl Surfriders club usually meets monthly in all weathers on the second Sunday at Rainbow Beach, but it is recommended that at least two or three lessons have been taken before participating. The competition on both Saturday and Sunday starts at 7am. The presentation to the winners will be made at approximately 1.30pm. Cost of contest entry is $60, but each girl gets a great ‘goodie bag’, a contest T shirt and a Nashy’s Pix photo while the whole family is fed free pizza and pasta at the Saturday night social event. A surfboard will be raffled but the holder of the winning ticket must be present at the draw to collect the prize. Registrations close today (Thursday) and can be made either by contacting Jo Astorini on 0447 020 433, dropping an email to jo.astorini@gmail.com or catch the Mid North Coast Girl Surfriders on Facebook.
• From Page 1 The couple got engaged at Christmas and Ivan earnt his place in the family when he helped Gloria prepare the Christmas dinner for the whole family of eight other siblings and their families. “As a teenager, we didn’t have much of a social life, but Mum always took Ivan’s side, even when we had a little argument,” remembers Gloria. Gloria and Ivan were married at St Michael’s Church of England in Wollongong on October 12, 1946, by Archdeacon Begbie and honeymooned at Katoomba, saving up their petrol ration cards to do the drive. Gloria cared for her mother for nine years and then had her father to care for while they started their family with a son, Terry. “We didn’t have much as Ivan was working away a lot as a truck driver so it was a pretty hard life to start off a marriage but it was what you do as a family,” says Gloria. “It was a hard start to a hard life,” agreed Ivan. Saving as much as possible, they bought a block of land and built a home at Mt St Thomas then acquired a number of small businesses in Gosford, Tamworth and Canberra over the years – cafés, a small supermarket then wholesaling a total of 13 moves. Ivan and Gloria have their son Terry and his wife Maree living close by, looking after their oyster leases. Of their three children Brenton, Danielle and Cameron, Brenton has given Ivan and Gloria five great grandchildren. It’s now Gloria’s turn to be cared for as she has developed Sjogren’s Disease, an autoimmune disorder which leaves her in a lot of pain. But recently Ivan gave them a huge fright when his pacemaker jolted his heart back into action. October is a busy month with their wedding anniversary on October 12, Ivan turning 91 on October 15 and Gloria turning 90 on October 27. The pair claims the secret to their long marriage has been a lot of give and take, understanding and a good sense of humour, particularly when you rely more on each other’s company as you get older. Gloria gets the final word: “You need to forgive each other all the time and admit when you are wrong. You commit to each other to work things out rather than walking out.”

LETTER WEEK OF THE

All letters sent in must include your address and phone number and be under 350 words.
Tuffins Lane tenure should be secured YOUR Local Independent Manager Sandy Mackenzie in the last Issue (September 29) considered “you never know what curve ball life is going to throw at you”. In the same issue were reports of the curve ball thrown to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to vacate the Tuffins Lane playing ields. Few would have been aware that Council did not have security of
Same-sex marriage IN response to a letter by one of your readers last week I submit an alternative point of view. There are more than 200,000 words in the English language. One reason for this is that we frequently use different words to highlight subtle differences in meaning or context. Take for instance, plebiscite and referendum. Virtually the same thing, but one (the plebiscite) is non-binding. Here’s another: gay and lesbian, both are homosexuals but one is male and one is female; a subtle difference in these days of gender equality. I submit that there is at least a subtle difference between a same sex union and a heterosexual breeding pair, so there should be different
tenure over these lands. Ex-councillor Adam Roberts advised that at no time during his fouryear term was there any suggestion of the risk of being evicted from Tuffins Lane. Worse, Cr Sharon Griffiths, whose portfolio covers sporting fields, was blissfully unaware of the eviction until she heard it on a TV news bulletin. It seems the councillors have been
very shabbily treated by Council’s Executive. It is hard to conceive what could be ‘developed’ on this site as the land seems only good for grazing or playing fields. As a retired Council General Manager, I was always very reluctant for Council to use its extensive powers of compulsory acquisition. However, considering the
considerable public assets developed on these fields, Council would be well justified, and I am sure the public would support, the compulsory resumption of the Tuffins Lane playing fields complex to ensure the security of the land tenure for future generations.
descriptors. While I firmly support the right of same sex couples to have a legally and socially recognised institution, I utterly reject the hijacking of the word ‘marriage’, which has had a particular meaning for thousands of years. The argument for ‘marriage equality’ is that it provides same sex couples with the same rights and legal status as heterosexual couples. The truth is that this has been available in Australia for nearly 20 years now. The civil union was introduced for just this purpose and provides the same safeguards and legal standing as a natural marriage. Apparently this is not good enough. If it’s the words ‘civil union’ that are the block then perhaps we should find another word.
Since homosexuals are content with the epithet ‘gay’ then perhaps they could ‘merry’ each other and we can introduce into the language a new institution, ‘merriage’. Seriously though, we destroy our traditions at our peril and while we are capable and willing to accommodate change, we should maintain the true meaning of marriage; the union of a man and a woman for the purpose of procreating and raising a family. For this semantic reason alone I will be voting ‘no’. Ed Coleman Port Macquarie
government will be able to legislate the result of the vote. It is better that the people make a decision regarding this matter. Miriam Boughton asks “Why are same-sex couples denied the right to celebrate their love through the act of a legal union, commonly referred to as ‘marriage’; a right that all heterosexual couples enjoy?” It’s actually because it is the only natural environment for the procreation and nurturing of children in society since the beginning of civilisation. Homosexuals enjoy the same legal rights as anyone else in the community and are able to buy a house and live together without persecution. I would like to know how Australians will vote on this issue . Lesley Chapman Address witheld

TO the person at the Port Macquarie Airport who, instead of removing a falling frond from a palm tree, marked the tree with a band of red tape. Surely the effort to do that was far more than cutting the frond from the tree and removing the hazard?
I would like to thank Shell and Matt of Coffee On High in Wauchope. The food and service was first class, not only that but the whole time the staff were cleaning chairs and tables as soon as they were vacated. So clean and perfectly run, it was delightful to sit and watch. Worth the trip.

Thumbs Up TO the Shelly Beach Pharmacist for his expert knowledge and advice. Next time I will go there first instead of wasting time using the wrong treatments. Shame he isn’t a GP because I’d definitely be one of his patients.
THANKS to the group of women who met this morning near the skate park while walking their dogs. After their chat, they took the dogs over to the water bottle filling outlet and held the button while the dogs lapped at the nozzle.

HOPEFULLY everyone has enjoyed the long weekend and managed some time for rest and relaxation? I have to admit, I did absolutely nothing! For the first time in a long time I caught up on some much needed sleep. I can’t remember the last time I slept in past 7.30-8am. I also read an amazing book - Scattered Pearls. An amazing true story of 3 generations of Iranian women and their search for freedom. Written by Sohila Zanjani and David Brewster, the story is heart-wrenching in parts, inspirational and very relevant as it reveals Sohila’s journey to Australia and successful assimilation into Australian lifestyle and culture. A must read in my mind. For those in the community that are antiMuslim, give it a go. You might be pleasantly surprised with the insights. Apart from reading and catching up on some mindless TV I really did rest and relax for the whole weekend. I decided that the endless list of household chores would still be there next weekend. So they stayed on the list! I did do the absolute necessities - washing is done, dishes are up to date and there was enough food in the fridge to make it through. The point is? I didn’t spend the weekend beating myself up for not doing the housework. I had a guilt-free weekend of rest!

Poet well-versed in imagery By SUE PATERICK ACCORDING to Plutarch - the Greek biographer and essayist - painting is silent poetry and poetry is painting that speaks. For young Macleay Valley poet Nate Curtis, poetry is all about imagery. He enjoys painting a picture with his words and making his readers think. Nate, a 14-year-old student at the Kempsey Adventist School, has always liked reading poetry, but has only been writing it for a few months. “Random words and thoughts come to me and I find writing poetry is an easy way to express myself,” he said. He takes inspiration from wordsmiths like rapper Tupac Shakur, George Orwell and William Shakespeare. Chance played a part in Nate’s stage debut in early September when the winner of last year’s Australian Poetry Slam, Phil Wilcox, visited the school. Phil was at the Kempsey Adventist School running a workshop to select students to participate in a regional heat of the 2016 Poetry Slam being held at Kempsey Library. He also hosted the event. When Nate read out one of his poems at the workshop, Phil urged him to go in the Poetry Slam. “I was pretty nervous when they called my name,” Nate said. “I thought, oh no! “But it was good.” It fact, Nate’s poem received rousing applause from the audience. While he didn’t win a prize, Nate has been inspired to write more poetry and will definitely enter the Australian Poetry Slam next year. To be sure he doesn’t forget any of his random thoughts these days, Nate keeps a note pad beside his bed.
Join in fun day on river
IF you enjoy team sport and love being on the water then pick up a paddle at the Kempsey Macleay Dragon Boat Club’s Come and Try Day. The fun floats off at the boat ramp in Kempsey’s Riverside Park this Saturday from 9.30am to midday. The club, known affectionately as the River Rats, has won many competitions and lists a raft of reasons why you should become a member. Apart from being a fun sport with no barriers, it is fantastic to be on the serpentine Macleay River seeing a different side of Kempsey. It is also a great social sport where members get to enjoy a post-paddle breakfast, there’s travel involved, a sense of belonging to a group and it improves your fitness. So if this appeals to you then why not give the ancient sport of dragon boating a try? Paddles and lifejackets will be supplied, but organisers warn you may get a little wet. For more information visit kmdbc.org.au or check out their Facebook page.
$6m boost for projects
Nate Curtis likes painting pictures with his words and making people think His ideal career would be to be a poet, but failing that he would like to be a park ranger and work somewhere like Cradle Mountain in Tasmania. “It’s so peaceful there,” he said. “The wildlife is amazing and so different from the flora and fauna of [mainland] Australia.” While Nate dreams of wilder countryside, he is glad his family moved to the Macleay Valley from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast in 2014. It was just getting too busy there and for Nate, a surfer, living in the Macleay Valley is
paradise. ‘The beaches are beautiful and it isn’t too touristy.” Singer, songwriter, poet and lead singer of the Doors, Jim Morrison, once wrote, “If my poetry aims to achieve anything, it’s to deliver people from the limited ways in which they see and feel.” For someone of Nate’s age to already want to make people think, see and feel differently means we will be hearing a lot more from this budding poet.
MEMBER for Oxley Melinda Pavey and Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams have announced a NSW Government funding boost to address the $35m backlog of council sewerage and water projects across the Mid North Coast. Close to $6m has been allocated by the NSW Government to construct sewerage and wastewater treatment works at Telegraph Point ($2.32m), Long Flat ($1.17m) and Comboyne ($2.5m). “This funding will help transition the existing but aged waste-disposal systems over to best-practise and latest technology sewerage schemes,” Mrs Pavey said. “Community growth over time has outstripped the capacity of the existing systems, so these large-scale infrastructure projects will be an enormous benefit to the districts,” Mrs Williams said. These funding programs are in addition to an allocation of $6.63m to provide a reticulated sewerage system at Stuarts Point, in the Kempsey Shire.

EACH month Port Macquarie-Hastings Council holds an ordinary council meeting whereby all councillors meet in the chamber to determine items of business as set out in the business papers for that meeting. All agendas and minutes of these meetings can be found on the council’s website, along with any attachments for all to see. There are items of business that are general reporting items such as the state of the council finances, status of outstanding reports and statutory disclosures and the like. Aside from those, councillors have the ability to put forward their own item for discussion and there is also a confidential section of the meeting whereby some items are placed to keep them out of the public eye for various reasons. Placing items in the confidential section of council means that the community will not see the content of the business paper attached to that item and no-one other than the councillors and the executive staff of council are in the chamber to hear or participate in the discussion. Placing items under the confidential section of council should only be used in certain circumstances and most definitely only in accordance with legislation or guidelines as set out in the Local Government Act or on advice from the State Government or their departments. Unfortunately, PMHC has a pretty ordinary track record of placing high-profile public interest items in the confidential section of council to avoid scrutiny from the general public. More recent confidential items such as the PCYC/Indoor Stadium project, where council dumped the PCYC from the project, was held in confidential session and awarding the current general manager a new five-year contract six months out from an election were considered without public scrutiny. If one was hopeful that greater transparency and accountability would prevail with a newlyelected council, well I’m sorry folks, we’re off to a pretty ordinary start already. The October 5 meeting saw another extremely high-profile item in the Tuffins Lane sporting fields debacle being placed into closed confidential section of council to obviously avoid public scrutiny. Transparent and accountable, much? (*Disclaimer: Adam Roberts is a voluntary contributor to Your Local Independent. Betty ticks off wish list By CHRISTINA PARKIN
ON the day before her 90th birthday, Betty Hicks has completed her wish list. Since the last report in Your Local Independent, Betty still had the visit to her first teaching classroom at Port Macquarie Primary School and the golf buggy tour around all 18 holes at Port Macquarie Golf Club outstanding. The visit to Port Macquarie Primary School was a special day as Betty was welcomed and ‘treated like royalty’ by teachers and students, according to Betty’s daughter, Bev Carver. The original classroom was still used and Betty got to sit on her walker at the front while the children sang and did some maths with her.
“Betty just loved it and sang along with them,” said Mrs Carver. “The staff invited her for morning tea and she was amazed how many people I knew from my days of teaching, including the children of some of the staff.” The last item was the drive around the Port Macquarie golf course on September 23, seated between her two daughters. “It was a Friday and women’s day so as we visited each hole, there was always someone who knew Betty or of her work with the Golf Club over many years,” said Mrs Carver. “So she really did feel like royalty and even admitted we should have done this sooner.”

Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams said the Fund will offer a one-off annual grant of $20,000 or a triennial grant of $27,500 per year for three years to events that have been running for more than two years. “Expressions of interest are now open for the 2017 Flagship Event Fund to help give local events vital funding support for marketing activities to drive overnight visitation,” Mrs Williams said. “Regional events in our area deliver important economic and community benefits to our region and showcase the unique talents of producers from food and wine growers to music and the arts.” Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres said the Fund is part of the Destination Network reforms to re-energise regional tourism across the State and 2017 offers more money to events than ever before. “Regional events are critical to attracting more visitors to experiences and destinations in rural and regional areas across NSW and we encourage event operators to take advantage of this vital funding opportunity,” Mr Ayres said. Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase said: “Regional events have the capacity to motivate those who are considering taking a holiday to book a trip and discover what’s on offer, and we look forward to welcoming more visitors to our State as a result of this wonderful Program.” Expressions of Interest for the Event Fund are open until Sunday, October 9 and applicants whose expressions of interest sufficiently meet the criteria will be invited to submit a full application in November. Two additional funds in the Regional Flagship Events Program, including the Incubator Event Fund and Event Development Fund will be available later this year. THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker
Federal Member for Cowper
Backpacker benefits BACKPACKERS wanting to travel throughout Australia on working holiday visas will benefit from a raft of new measures to working holiday visa arrangements announced recently. From January 1, 2017, the tax rate for working holiday-makers will be 19 per cent, not 32.5 per cent as was the arrangement prior to the review. The changes also make applying for a working holiday visa cheaper, and increase the age of applicants from 30 to 35. Federal Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker said the announcement outlining the new conditions to working holiday visa arrangements was a major win and a great result for the north coast. “Thanks to a concerted effort from The Nationals in response to calls from the electorate, the tax rate applying to working holiday-makers will be 19 cents in the dollar on earnings up to $37000,” Minister Hartsuyker said. “The government will also reduce the application charge for working-holiday maker visas by $50 to $390, and extend the age of applicants from 30 to 35 years of age. And backpackers can now work for the same employer for up to 12 months. “These changes will lower the cost of coming to Australia for working holidaymakers and increase the number of people eligible to travel and work in Australia under a working holiday visa. “These changes were made in a bid to make areas like the north coast a more desirable destination for this type of holidaymaker.” The government recognises that working holiday-makers are an important part of Australia’s $43.4 billion tourism industry and a key source of labour, particularly in the agriculture, horticulture, tourism and hospitality sectors. It also recognises that working holidaymakers should pay fair tax on their earnings. This is why at the 2016 election, the government committed to review the tax arrangements for working holiday makers by the end of the year. In addition, the government will fund a $10 million global youth-targeted advertising campaign to potential working holidaymakers which will be implemented by Tourism Australia. The changes are budget neural. The government will increase the tax on working holiday-makers’ superannuation payments when they leave Australia to 95 per cent. There will also be a one-off increase to the Passenger Movement Charge of $5 from July 1, 2017.
Help is a phone call away
Extra support for ‘DV’ victims DOMESTIC Violence Support: A new phone number will give free, accurate and timely advice and referrals for victims of domestic violence across NSW. For the first time a single, easy to remember number will connect a victim directly with the local Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service (WDVCAS) when they enter a postcode. This is just one more way the NSW Government is making local, targeted support for domestic violence victims and their families fast and accessible. 1800 WDVCAS (1800 938 227) will link victims with a range of local support services including accommodation, counselling, financial support, court support, legal advice and referrals to government and non-government organisations. Under the NSW Government’s $53 million Safer Pathway program, WDVCAS plays a key role to help coordinate government and non-government support for victims in need of protection who are at risk of further harm, injury or death. Jobs Boom On The Mid North Coast: New data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics
STATE MATTERS
With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie
(ABS) confirming employment on the Mid North Coast has grown by 4,800 jobs in the past year is very welcome news. This continued job growth is a reminder of the record investment in regional NSW by the NSW Government. Projects like the Pacific Highway upgrade, Port Macquarie Base Hospital expansion or the work that will be generated with the Port Macquarie Airport terminal upgrade are giving businesses confidence to put on additional employees which is great for the local economy. Regional NSW is outperforming the other states when it comes to jobs growth, adding almost 60 per cent of the total number of regional jobs nationwide over the last 12 months according to official ABS data.
Climate action = jobs MID north coast safe climate and clean energy group Climate Change Australia Hastings (CCA-H), has welcomed a new report that finds acting on climate change will attract jobs and investment to regional Australia. The report is called ‘On the Frontline: Climate Change and Rural Communities’. CCA-H president Harry Creamer said now is the time to bring these benefits to regional Australia. He said clean energy attracts jobs to regional areas and more than 28,000 jobs will be created if Australia generates half of our energy from renewables by 2030. However neither the state nor the federal governments have a plan to increase renewable energy beyond 2020. “Renewable energy will create jobs and reduce electricity costs for regional communities as installation costs keep falling and when changes are made to regulations governing the electricity network”, Mr Creamer said. “Farmers can add additional revenue streams from renewable energy. About $20.6 million each year is already going in lease payments to farmers and landholders hosting wind turbines.” On the downside, an increase in extreme weather events is affecting many regional areas, such as the recent South Australia storms and floods in central western NSW, with farms and small businesses impacted by extreme weather. If political, it’s probably not correct my
A FEW years ago a journalist sitting near me in the office said ‘Oh no’. A few minutes after she said this, a person from outside the office arrived and they had a few words in a corner. They had been exchanging, by email, some words about a third person, and then the person from outside the office had accidentally sent her email to the subject of their criticism. My advice was to ring the person and grovel. That’s a technical term for ‘own up and face the music’.The advice to me later was that the person had forgiven them. I thought about that when a person in the public eye did the same thing recently. He had used some nasty words about a female journalist – and then sent the email by mistake to that same journalist. That might have little or even nothing to do with political correctness, but I thought of it as I sat down to write about political correctness. Some people in our country, and perhaps other countries, are worried that they can’t say anything without sending it to their lawyers for political correctness. The Australian Union of Students said people became aware of ‘political correctness’ when they became victim to what was considered undesirable.
LAURIE BARBER
I came across a website recently that included what it called items of ‘political correctness gone mad’. They included a Seattle school referring to spring spheres instead of Easter eggs; the BBC replacing brainstorming with thought showers in case epileptics would be offended; a United Kingdom job recruiter’s use of the words ‘reliable’ and ‘hard working’ rejected in case some lazy people objected; some stores in Australia banning Santas from saying ‘ho ho ho’ because it was too close to American slang for prostitute; some USA schools having a ‘holiday tree’ instead of a Christmas tree. I was told only recently that a government department had issued an instruction that people were to stop writing about sex and were to use gender instead, even though gender through the years has had a different meaning. To be politically correct is to choose words
and sometimes actions that avoid disparaging, insulting or offending people because they belong to oppressed groups. This is highly commendable. So far as I can tell, the term began to take hold in the middle of the 20th century. Senator Cory Bernardi of Australia, commenting on political correctness, suggested a few years ago he did not need to be welcomed to his own country, because he was born here and as such was just as indigenous as anybody else. He mentioned a group that had renamed fairy penguins little penguins in case homosexuals would be offended. Civil Liberties Australia commented: “It is essential that we preserve the right to free speech provided we do not insult people for their race or religious beliefs.” There are many examples of political correctness that are good, in the interests of equality. But in my opinion – and you might disagree -- there are some that go too far. A source I read said political correctness was eroding freedom of speech in Australia. Where is the balance? You’d better ask someone else for an answer to that, but the answer lies in balance.I heard a good comment once: “If in doubt, don’t.” lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Local art comes to life THERE are some exceptional pieces of art on show at the 9th bi-annual Adelaide Swift Memorial Art Awards which opened on Friday, September 30 at the South West Rocks Public School Hall. The exhibition and awards are dedicated to the memory of Adelaide Swift, a long time South West Rocks resident who passed away in the late 1990’s. Adelaide was a multi-faceted woman, being a beautician, nursing sister, inventor, keen on the outdoors as well as a travel enthusiast and artist. Judged by Stephen Giese, Head Teacher of Creative Industries at the Lismore Campus of North Coast TAFE, over 80 submssions were received. One of the winners of the drawing section is Carly Marchment (pictured) from Crescent Head who uses a dry brush technique to recreate a photo of her daughter, Frankie, in her piece entitled Summer Dreaming II. The piece took over 40 hours to recreate from a photo of her daughter when she was four years of age. The Adelaide Swift Memorial Art exhibition continues daily from 10-4pm until Saturday, October 8, when the People’s Choice Award is announced.
Group makes waves a reality By CHRISTINA PARKIN
AN iconic part of Australian life is enjoying the beach and catching waves, but for those who are disabled, this activity becomes a reality through the work of the Disabled Surfers Association. This Saturday, October 8, the Hastings Branch is holding an information day from 9-12pm at Flynn’s Beach in Port Macquarie to encourage those who would like to learn how to help the disabled enjoy the waves. “We never push anyone, whether they are a participant or volunteer,” says John
Brownsberger, President of the Hastings Branch of the Disabled Surfers Association. “If someone is not smiling when you come along, then you are doing something wrong. “Seeing the smiles on the disabled participants makes it all worthwhile.” A total voluntary organisation, which sets world’s best practice for disabled surfers, the volunteers work as a team to transport the participant down to the water’s edge, onto the board and through the corridor of volunteers in the water to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride through the waves. A special part of the beach,
close to the disabled ramp, is set aside. Different coloured rash shirts distinguish the blue volunteers, yellow participants and the red team leaders. The sessions are organised monthly and run in all weathers unless the beach is closed. It costs $20 to register as a volunteer to cover insurance and a BBQ is held at the end of the monthly session for all involved. Many high school students get involved, but 30-60 volunteers are needed and the more there are, the more that can be given a ride. The information day will provide training for new volunteers, including a demonstration of
how the surfing is enabled. The Hastings is one of the biggest branches and a Holiday Coast Credit Union grant was used to purchase a trailer to hold the boards and beach wheelchairs “If someone wants a ride, we’ll give it to them,” explains Mr Brownsberger. “We try to keep it as safe as possible and sometimes even the very infirm have their carer with them enjoying the experience together. You can get more information by ringing John Brownsberger on 0448 509 754 or the website at www.disabledsurfers.org

Data shows job growth
Almost the real thing By LIZZIE McLEOD
THE resemblance is uncanny between singer and songwriter Rob Caudill, pictured, and the legendary Rod Stewart. In the upcoming performance ‘Forever Young’, the talented Caudill will show Port Macquarie just how close he is to the real thing. Caudill has been getting stopped in airports and restaurants all his life because of his looks – the defined jawline, spiky blonde hair and distinctive nose - and even his naturally raspy voice has a very familiar tone, so making a profession out of impersonating Rod Stewart seemed an obvious career choice. “I started out as a bass player, singer, and songwriter,” said Caudill. “People always told me I looked like Rod Stewart. I went to Vegas and saw a Rod Stewart show and loved it. I already sang ‘Maggie May’ and ‘Forever Young’, so I already knew some songs. That
was the easy part, but the British accent, that was hard, especially being a Southern gentlemen.” Not only does Rob share the same looks, but he also has a deep appreciation and respect for the famous pop star. “I remember the first time I heard Rod Stewart on the radio,” said Caudill. “I thought ‘Wow!’ “Rod is 71 now, I saw him 3 weeks ago and he is still amazing. He’s an amazing character, he really is. Hopefully when I am his age I can still perform like that.” Caudill says his audience can expect a highenergy show as well as everyone’s favourite Rod Stewart songs, and maybe even some songs that

You can sing along, get up and dance, and do whatever you want. Joining Caudill on stage is top 12 Australian Idol contestant Ashleigh Toole who has been compared to the legendary Cher, making this performance the very best of Rod Stewart and Cher. ‘Forever Young’ hits the stage on October 14 from 7.30pm at the Glasshouse, Port Macquarie. MEMBER for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams has welcomed new data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) confirming employment on the Mid North Coast has grown by 4,800 jobs in the past year. Mrs Williams said this continued job growth is a reminder of the great things the NSW Government is doing in regional NSW. “Where infrastructure is being built, there are jobs on the ground. “Projects like the Pacific Highway upgrade, Port Macquarie Base Hospital expansion or the work that will be generated with the Port Macquarie Airport terminal upgrade are giving businesses confidence to put on additional employees which is great for the local economy,” Mrs Williams said. Regional NSW is outperforming the other states when it comes to jobs growth, adding almost 60 per cent of the total number of regional jobs nationwide over the last 12 months, official ABS data shows. Minister for Regional Development, Skills and Small Business John Barilaro said the recent regional jobs data reflects the State Government’s continued investment in job creation and business growth initiatives. “The NSW Government is supporting regional businesses by investing in initiatives that will connect businesses with world class resources, technology and expertise to encourage business growth in our regions,” Mr Barilaro said. “Our latest $12 million Boosting Business Innovation program is building a new statewide innovation network that will help business owners bring their ideas to life.” As part of its focus on driving regional infrastructure investment, the NSW Government is delivering: ● $6 billion under Rebuilding NSW; ● $110 million under the Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund; ● $92 million with the Commonwealth and carriers under Round One of the Commonwealth’s Mobile Black Spots Program.

A series of community workshops will be held during October, providing residents with the opportunity to discuss footpaths, safe crossings and pedestrian access within Port MacquarieHastings towns and villages. The workshops will occur in Beechwood, Telegraph Point, North Shore, Comboyne and Long Flat to assist Council in preparing a draft Small Villages Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan. “Footpaths are a part of everyday life, providing the basis for recreation and physical activity, enabling access to the many areas of our community,” said Council Director Jeffery Sharp. “It is important that we hear from our community that utilise our footpaths, as this will assist Council in developing a plan that addresses the barriers to people getting around, and ensure better pedestrian infrastructure.” The draft Small Villages Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan will act as a blueprint to assist Council in determining future pedestrian and mobility works programs and funding opportunities. Workshop details Beechwood Community Hall - 4pm Friday, October 14. Telegraph Point Community Hall - 10am Saturday, October 15. North Shore Kangaroo Park - 4pm Friday, October 21. Comboyne Community Hall - 10am Saturday, October 22. Long Flat Community Hall - 2pm Saturday, October 22. There is no need to register for the workshops and light refreshments will be provided. “After the workshops there is also the option to join a 30-minute walking tour with Council staff to look at high-priority areas,” added Mr Sharp. WILDLIFE rescue and care group FAWNA is encouraging people who have thought of becoming wildlife volunteers to join them and come along to an induction training course. President Meredith Ryan said: “It is the perfect time to join FAWNA with three courses available between now and Christmas.” A Rescue and Immediate Care training course will be held on Saturday, October 15 in Taree; Macropods (kangaroos and wallabies) in Port Macquarie on Saturday, November 5, and Possums and Gliders in Coopernook on Saturday, November 12. Covering the Port Macquarie-Hastings, Mid Coast and Kempsey local government areas, the group last year dealt with 3403 animals, birds and reptiles, 612 being macropods and 297 possums and gliders. FAWNA needs more trained volunteers to help cope with the load of injured, orphaned and disadvantaged fauna averaging 65 per week every week over the past 12 months. Membership and training course details and bookings are available via www.fawna.org.au. Bookings are essential. Mrs Ryan reminds the community that to rehabilitate wildlife, it is the law that a person is trained and authorised by a National Parks and Wildlife Service-licensed group. “Sadly our group sees some poor outcomes for wildlife when well-intentioned members of the public don’t know the specialised foods and caring protocols needed which are so important for these wildlife orphans - much different from domestic pets and farm animals,” said Mrs Ryan. “It can be very distressing for wildlife carers to have badly-nourished and stressed animals surrendered, sometimes too late to save.” FAWNA is the only all-species group licensed from Bulahdelah to the top of the Kempsey Shire. FAWNA’s 24hour wildlife rescue hotline is 6581 4141.

“
By CHRISTINA PARKIN HOUSEMATE Ninja is a unique website and app that matches housemates or roomates with those who have rooms to rent. Young mum Kellee Morgan came up with the idea after identifying the need created by the influx of students looking for suitable rentals until specific student accommodation can be built. Kellee first won recognition with the Business Elevator when seven of Edmund Barton Centre’s StartUp and Key Program clients participated in presenting their business ideas to a panel of local business leaders. The panel selected Kellee’s revolutionary online app to assist roommates and those with rooms to rent come together as innovative and having international potential. A prize of $1000 was awarded to assist with her business. Housemate Ninja was also recognised nationally as one of the Anthill Smart 100 Innovation Awards Top 100. Kellee is doing some beta testing before promoting it nationally and is calling for anyone on the hunt for a housemate to test the website at www.theninjaiscoming.com “The whole experience has been a huge learning curve,” explains Kellee, who has completed a business and marketing degree with the University of New England. “I suppose you can say it’s a dating app for housemates where people put in all their

Give a pet a happy home
IT is no surprise that animals make the world a better place and World Animal Day (which was this week on Tuesday, October 4) was a timely reminder to raise awareness and improve the welfare standards for those that have no voice. To celebrate World Animal Day, Petbarn Port Macquarie, in partnership with RSPCA NSW, is encouraging locals to consider pet adoption to help animals find a ‘forever home’. Local store manager Sarah Rogers says World Animal Day is a fantastic way to celebrate the love and companionship that our furry friends provide us and is the perfect opportunity to raise awareness of the number of animals that are without a home. Sadly, thousands of animals in Australia are abandoned or lost. To help save animal lives, Petbarn has partnered with local animal shelters throughout the country to create Petbarn Adoption Centres in over 97 stores to help rehome pets to suitable owners and homes in the local area. “At Petbarn Port Macquarie, we believe that adopting is a great way to ensure these animals have a well-deserved second chance and find happiness in a new, loving home,” said Sarah. “And World Animal Day is the perfect time to show how pet adoption can not only help save animal lives, but enrich ours. “Pets can teach us how to be more responsible, compassionate, empathetic, kind, loyal, help us to improve our wellbeing, and keep us a little more active – all these traits make them a perfect addition to the family. “Pop into our store to find out which animals are currently available for adoption and keep in mind that the end of October is kitten season (as kittens are born in spring and it takes six to eight weeks to be vaccinated and be available for adoption) so we are expecting an influx then. “Always remember – adopt, don’t shop.”
she also took her idea of connecting those who ‘work at home’ and would like to collaborate with peers to ETC. ETC then provided a space called the Beacon Co-Working Space which happens every Wednesday from 9am-4pm. “Business technology is changing so fast that there is a need to get the information out and bounce ideas around with the business advisers at ETC,” said Kellee. For locals who need to find a room or who have a spare room to rent and would like to help provide feedback and be the first to use the app before national release, please contact Kellee on hello@housemateninja.com for an exclusive invite.

Country singing legend Loretta Lynn
By LIZZIE McLEOD
AMBER Joy Poulton is both a mum and a successful country singer, so there’s no wonder she feels at home portraying mother-of-six and one of the greatest country music singers of all time - Loretta Lynn. On October 20 Amber will be in the spotlight in that role at the Glasshouse when the Australian version of ‘The Coal Miner’s Daughter’ comes to town. “I just related more with Loretta Lynn than any other artist,” said Amber. “I love the fact that she is cheeky as well. She has these songs that she sings like a love song, but they are actually quite political and racy, so much so that some of them were banned from radio. She was always pushing the envelope.” Amber became so inspired by Loretta Lynn and her life that she sat down pieced together this
Successful Australian singer Amber Joy Poulton musical tribute to Loretta’s life and work. “I was pregnant with my second child and started to write this show,” said Amber. “Loretta’s songs are all about her life. When she was having children and how hard that was for her she wrote ‘One’s on the Way’, and dealing with issues in the marriage with ‘You Ain’t Woman Enough to Take My Man’. “Touring with Conway Twitty, there were some duets in there that were perhaps a little bit
suggestive. Right down to when her husband died and she wrote ‘I Miss Being a Mrs’.” ‘The Coal Miner’s Daughter’ has been a sellout across Australia, and it all comes down to the talent and the cast’s ability to convince the audience they are watching the real thing. “After the show I’ll almost always have someone come up to me asking when we are going back to America,” Amber said. “The audience gives themselves to us to do what we

The next Inspire! Forum will be at Town Green Inn (TG’s) from 5.30 to 7.00pm on Monday, October 10 at a cost of $10 for adults and $5 for students to cover room hire.
A THOUGHT-PROVOKING discussion forum has been launched in Port Macquarie by the husband and wife team of John and Sue Carroll. Naturally, it has been named the ‘Inspire! Understanding what people don’t say; are we all leaders and what is success and how does the way we define it affect our lives and our society are a taste of the themes that attendees have discovered. additional targeted funding will make a difference. “This additional funding will have an impact on the accessibility of early education for our most vulnerable families and those attending pre-school in 2017. “Our community-owned service welcomes such a funding increase, as it is essential for young children to receive quality engagement in early education and care programs to support their learning and success in life. It is vital that governments at all levels understand the importance of investing in early education and care which significantly improves the outcomes of children. “The benefits of children’s involvement in early education impacts on our entire society, as our community’s future is impacted upon by the growth and success of these young people,” Rebecca said. The funding represents the largest single fee reduction in NSW history, making preschool more affordable so that more children will be able to participate in 600 hours – or about 15 hours per week – of early childhood education in community preschools and long day care centres.

Mrs Pavey said the NSW Government is committed to providing universal access to quality early childhood education. “This funding will reduce preschool fees for four and five-year-olds and removes nearly all fees for preschool children from Aboriginal and low-income families. “In order for children to get the most out of their school years, preparing them for school is the essential first step; and this can be best done through enabling regular pre-school attendance. “Importantly, I’ve already had an example where a mum will be able to afford to keep her child at pre-school - rather than have to send the child to school at a stage which is too early in the child’s development.” “I know the preschools here in the Oxley electorate, including Kempsey Children’s Services, make a very big difference to the lives of our children,” Melinda said. Maroro stuns Hawaii It certainly “made all those
5am training sessions during winter worth it
“
IT’S akin to selling ice to Eskimos, but the recent achievements of Port Macquarie’s Maroro Outrigger Club have led to a stunning victory at the sport’s biggest regatta in Hawaii. The five paddlers from the Maroro club recently returned from the Hawaiian island of Kona with gold and silver medals from the iconic Queen Lili’uokalani event held on September 3. It was the first time the club had competed at the regatta, which is held over four days and attracts more paddlers than any other outrigger carnival in the world. “We had a great time and we’d definitely do it again,” says coach Wes Byrnes. “It certainly made all those 5am training sessions during winter worth it.” Competing against 121 crews in the long-course event, Port Macquarie’s Master Women’s crew surprised their fancied Hawaiian and Tahitian rivals by finishing second in their category. Karen Newman, Fiona Baker, Dee Douglass and Kerry Owens were joined by two paddlers from Sydney club Pacific Dragons to make the successful crew, completing the 26km course in 2hrs 34mins. The event boasts 122 canoes lining up along the bay of Kona for the start, paddling out of the harbour, passing the Captain Cook Memorial before returning to Kona. Despite extremely hot and humid conditions,

Dino’s sprint series treble PORT Macquarie Sailing Club held the first series of sprint races last Sunday with a nice moderate north-easter at the start of the run-out tide for the first two races. It escalated to heavy conditions with a strong north-easter and a strong run-out tide for the third race after lunch. The morning’s light conditions were good for the introduction to sailing course that Simon Gandy has been running for the kids and the numbers are continuing to grow. The first sprint race in the lighter breezes resulted in a win for Frank O’Rourke on Dino in the multihulls ahead of Tony Kuhn on Stella and Dave Winter on Spica. Paul Robertson and Gary in Flembouyant won the first monohull race with Simon and Elsa Gandy in Voyager, Tony Walker in Deep Purple, and Steve and Caleb Bohlsen in Splash Dance rounding out the fleet. Ron Apps on Kimbo 3 and Michael Jones in Sunset both failed to finish. Dino also won the second sprint race for the monohulls and Stella, Jack Corthals on Harpic, and Spica came in after that. Deep Purple won the second monohull sprint race ahead of Voyager, Flembouyant (this time with Simon as crew), and Splash Dance. With conditions getting much heavier after the lunch, only Dino, Harpic, and Stella contested the third multihull race, finishing in that order. There were also non-starters in the third monohull race which was won by Flembouyant (this time with Warren Sykes as crew), followed by Deep Purple. Voyager (this time with Michael Jones as crew) started but failed to finish. The final results for this first round of the sprint series for the multihulls were: Dino, Stella, Harpic and Spica. For the monohulls it was Flembouyant, Deep Purple, Voyager, and Splash Dance. Next Sunday is race five of the spring series starting at 2pm. Rob Barwick is rostered on duty.
