A pet problem By SUE PATERICK AS cute and cuddly as a puppy or kitten might be, the advice from volunteer carers is to think very carefully about buying an animal especially during the Christmas holiday period. President of the Friends of Kempsey Pound (FKP), Marion Crowley, advised not to give pets as presents at Christmas because a dog or a cat is a lifetime commitment. “That person may not want a gift that is such a big responsibility or have the time, energy, or money to care for an animal,” she explained. And Marion couldn’t stress enough the importance of desexing your animals, whether they are male or female. While the FKP officially formed in March this year, Marion has been rescuing animals from Kempsey Pound for three years now and sending them on to other rescue centres across Australia. These lucky creatures, great and small, are transported to the rescue centres in Taree, Port Macquarie, Armidale, Queensland and even Western Australia. Marion works with Kempsey Shire Council rangers in a volunteer capacity. She visits the pound a few times a week and never leaves a small dog, kitten or a puppy behind. “The pound is a scary place so we put the little ones in temporary care,” she said. The bigger dogs and cats have their

temperament tested and their photographs are placed online. Marion explained that other rescue centres regularly check the FKP’s Facebook page and put up their hand to take an animal. “People also donate money for transport, which helps other rescue centres that are a long way from Kempsey,” she added. “It can cost $300 to transport an animal to a rescue centre on the border of Victoria and New South Wales.” Sometimes the volunteers from FKP don’t have to arrange transport because someone in the community will offer to take the animal because they are heading in the same direction as the rescue centre. KFP will then arrange the centre to pick up the animal at a convenient location. To help their cause FKP also has two donation bins for pet food: one is at Woolworths and the other at the Bi-Lo Centre at South West Rocks. Over the past 12 months Marion and the FKP have saved over 400 dogs and cats from euthanasia. This animal loving charity can’t get enough foster carers, especially for bigger dogs, and would love some help. If you would like to become a member and/ or a carer of the Friends of Kempsey Pound then check out their Facebook page. • Continued Page 13

Mole check-up saved Matt By BARBARA DYER

Matt Love - a second opinion on a mole proved the best decision of his life

Regular annual checks are vital and the older people get, the more frequent those checks should be walking 18 kilometres with our son Josh,” she said. “He has been supported by his mates in the local car club to raise funds for cancer research through rallies and barefoot bowls events.” Michelle says the missed opportunity for an earlier diagnosis has caused the family angst and

anger. But right now, the family is putting its energy into Matt’s health. “Matt loves his family and, like all people with a terminal disease, he has hope for a cure and more time,” she says. “He is forever grateful to the people who

THE Mid North Coast has been identified as a melanoma hotspot with 260 people likely to be diagnosed with malignant skin cancer in 2018. At last week’s launch in Port Macquarie of a statewide skin cancer prevention strategy, CEO of the Cancer Institute NSW, Professor David Currow said that 95 per cent of melanomas and 99 per cent of non melanoma skin cancers could be prevented by protecting the skin from UV exposure. “Our message for the people of the Mid North Coast is to take action to protect your skin, it could save your life,” the state’s chief cancer officer said. “When the UV is high, which is almost year round on the mid north coast, seek shade, apply broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every two hours and wear a hat, sunglasses and protective clothing.” Professor Currow and Chief Health Officer, Dr Kerry Chant, and Chief Executive of the Mid North Coast Local Health District, Mr Stewart Dowrick were joined at the launch by local melanoma survivor Matt Love and his wife Michelle. The NSW Skin Cancer Prevention Strategy sees government and non-government organisations across the state collaborating to prevent skin cancers. “We will work with agencies like Safe Work NSW, the NSW Ministry of Health, NSW Department of Education, the NSW Office of Sport, Cancer Council NSW, Melanoma Institute Australia and others to implement policies, campaigns and infrastructure to protect the community from harmful UV,” said Prof Currow.

THREE years ago an observant barber spotted a mole hiding in Matt Love’s sideburns and suggested Matt have it checked. “The barber said it was new, since Matt’s last haircut,” explains Matt’s wife, childhood sweetheart Michelle. “We now know that a new mole, or one that changes, are warning signs for melanoma.” Matt, now 50, had been having regular checks every two years with his own doctor who, unfortunately, was away at the time. So Matt made an appointment with a different clinic. The father of two - Josh, 21, and Bree, 19 was told the mark was nothing to worry about. “In fact, the doctor was quite dismissive about it,” says Michelle. “He thought it was just vanity on Matt’s part and said everything looked OK.” But everything was far from OK, as the mole grew, changed and bled. Being a busy businessman, running a number of businesses, it wasn’t until October, 2014 that Matt went for a second opinion. “The doctor said he was booked up for weeks, but felt the mole needed immediate removal and he took Matt in on a Sunday.” Pathology results confirmed melanoma. Matt was referred to the Melanoma Institute of Australia for the wide excision. “The lymph nodes were clear, so it seemed the melanoma hadn’t spread,” said Michelle. “With such a close shave with cancer, we sold one of the businesses and Matt focused on being healthy.” On the June long weekend of 2015, having sold his business seven days earlier, Matt was enjoying his first long weekend off in six years when he collapsed and was rushed to hospital. There came the devastating discovery that the melanoma had spread and Matt had three brain tumours. “The prognosis was not good. Matt was given only a few months to live,” says Michelle. The Melanoma Institute offered hope and Matt underwent difficult and rigorous treatments. Now two and a half years later Matt remains on targeted therapy (seven tablets daily) and is living a semi-retired life. “There are permanent side effects to manage but the most recent scans show a cancer-free result with the remaining brain tumour showing no signs of being active at the moment,” says Michelle. Matt now focuses on enjoying his motorsport business, spending time with his children and growing old with his wife. Michelle said although Matt was nervous about public speaking he wanted to help raise awareness about melanoma. “Matt has raised thousands of dollars for cancer research, completing a leg of the Longest Melanoma Walk through Port Macquarie,

A cancer ‘hotspot’

have helped along the way. He is grateful to the Melanoma Institute and grateful that there is hope for a future. Part of that hope is that others will not wait until it’s too late. “Regular annual checks are vital and the older people get, the more frequent those checks should be,” says Michelle. “People think they are looking for something black and with furry edges. That is part of it. “But so too should they be checked out for moles or marks that appear seemingly overnight, or existing moles that change. “And they should be aware that the highest incidence of melanoma occurs in people aged 15-30. “We see people now with their tans, and we think, ‘don’t do it’. It’s just not worth the risk. “We worry that kids in high school are not made to wear broad brimmed hats. Those caps are not enough. “Skin cancer is just not cool.”

Bible against many things

I REFER to the Stump the Preacher column by Pastor Kerry Medway in Your Local Independent on November 30. He states, “Stand by your God-given belief in marriage being for males and females ONLY”. If this is based on the Christian Bible, then what about the Gospels four times recording strong statements by Jesus against divorce and remarriage? Or the explicit statements of St Paul that women should learn in quietness and full submission and that women are not permitted to teach or assume authority over a man? (It seems Margaret Court sees that as optional.) Who decides? While there are around four references to homosexuality in the New Testament, what about the other 20 references to sexual immorality generally? (And the terms used don’t necessarily relate to consensual adult relationships.) We need to be aware of the risks of confirmation bias in reading the Bible. The core of the Gospel is God’s initiative to build healthy relationships - offering His unconditional love, that enables us to accept our strengths and weaknesses with gratitude and humility, and through His Spirit to grow in maturity and to offer unconditional love to others.

I place more weight on Jesus’ example of embracing those rejected by mainstream society, and His emphasis on passing on the mercy and compassion we have received from God. We now understand that homosexuality is an orientation from birth, not a lifestyle choice like marriage. My God-given belief is that affirmation of committed same-sex relationships trumps Biblical legalism. Stephen Nicholson Port Macquarie

‘Wrong priorities’

PREMIER Berejiklian’s decision to spend $2.5 billion on demolishing and then rebuilding two sports stadiums in Sydney reflects the wrong priorities. This is money that should be spent on our schools and hospitals. It is wasteful spending that can’t be justified. It is an insult to communities across our state. Just think what $2.5 billion could do for our schools, hospitals and TAFEs. Countless rural roads could be improved for a fraction of that price. Luke Foley NSW Opposition Leader

just say I didn’t have lunch. On to our accommodation, great house but some basic hospitality lessons wouldn’t go astray. We compiled a list. Hopefully our feedback makes sure it’s good for the next lot who go there. Once we’re all unpacked its time to chill until we go to Cat Stevens, nicely set up with our high tea in the garden, kicking back having a few drinks and the weather just closes in. It starts to drizzle, the temperature drops, and the rain is setting in for the night. Joy to the world! We troop off to the winery on our preordered mini bus. Our logistics and planning were faultless, get out and well, the skies opened, and it absolutely persisted down! There was no shelter, no umbrellas allowed and within minutes there were thousands of us happily sporting the style of ‘drowned rats’. Not something you forget in a hurry because the anticipation of the crowd, meant the atmosphere was fantastic! What can I say? Cat Stevens – he’s obviously well connected. Just as people were getting jack of it, the rain stopped when he came out on stage and started again with the end of the last song. His songs are possibly even more relevant today than when I first fell in love with his music in the early ’70s. He is a brilliant performer. His band are amazing muso’s and I would do it all over again, in a heartbeat! For my travel buddies, cheers for a weekend of plenty of fun and frivolity. I’m looking forward to more of the same.

TO all of the staff at the Macleay Valley Nursing Home, Frederickton for the amazing care they gave our father over the past six weeks, and the wonderful support our family received from everyone once he required Palliative Care. We could not have asked for more for our father or ourselves. You helped make a difficult time easier. Thank you everyone from Peter Walker’s family.

Thumbs Up WE would like to thank Macleay Valley Veterinary Services and their fantastic staff for the wonderful service and compassion they showed us when our beautiful Jess was ill. Your compassion was greatly appreciated at such a hard time.

WOW! What a weekend! A bunch of friends and I took off for the weekend to see the one and only Cat Stevens, at the Roche Estate in the Hunter Valley on Saturday night. What a night! Because of the different work commitments, we travelled down in some random form of convoy to meet in Cessnock at the house we’d rented for the weekend. My trusty sidekick and I headed off Saturday morning. He’s got a bag with possibly three items in it. I’ve got five changes of clothes, three pairs of shoes, a spare bag, toiletries and some baking I’d done for a high tea we had planned prior to the concert. Nabiac was the first stop. I needed a wee and a tea, so we called into the café, after I did a little illegal manoeuvring to get into the car park. If you’ve been there, you’ll know exactly what I mean. We walked in to see four faces behind the counter, who completely ignored us for a couple of minutes and then an older lady said: “Oh, I suppose I’ll serve you, they’re busy training how to make coffee.” Okay… We ordered our drinks, used the toilet facilities while we waited. No toilet paper, no hand towels - zip, zero, zilch! Thank God, I only needed to wee. I could have been in dire straits! Back into the café to sit down and have our cuppa, if you can fit your legs between the table and the booth seat. Off we go to Cessnock and I’m dreaming of the juicy medium rare steak I’m going to devour for lunch. We stop at one of the pubs in Cessnock that has huge signs plastered all over the walls – award-winning restaurant 2014! I say false advertising! My co-pilot got his meal, ate it and I was still waiting at least 15 minutes later. Finally my meal was delivered, and I can safely say there was not a skerrick of life left in that poor beast! Mechanic fixing to save koalas I think “everyone

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

should get involved in the preservation of koalas

A PORT Macquarie mechanics business is hoping to fix more than broken vehicles – they are also aiming to save our dwindling koala population. Corey Siviour and his team from APPS Mechanical are keeping an old red ute serviced and in top condition to be used to pick up and drop off young eucalyptus koala food trees as part of the SKOOLS for KOALAS initiative of Living with Koalas. “G Henshaw from Living with Koalas donated the ute to the koala program and we are keeping it running for him,” said Corey. “We did a service last week on it because it wasn’t running very well and needed repairs done. So whatever repairs it needs over the next few years we will do free.” Corey owns APPS Mechanical along with his father Brad, and says before he got talking to G, he had no idea that there are now less than 2,500 koalas in the wild in the Port Macquarie region. “I was shocked when I discovered just how low the number of wild koalas there is in this area,” said Corey. “I thought we had plenty of healthy koalas. I guess numbers are decreasing because of all the development going on. Why can’t they leave enough trees for the koalas? We are happy to help out. I don’t want to tell my kids we let the wild koalas become extinct.” The team at APPS Mechanical are even working on other environmental changes to their business. “We are trying to operate an eco-workshop here and change the way workshops are run,” said Corey. “Anything to do with workshops unfortunately involves a lot of waste. My dad and I are trying to cut back on plastic and waste and just trying to buy everything in bulk and not in throw away containers.” Corey believes everyone should help the plight of the koalas. “I think everyone should get involved in the

Corey Siviour and his wife Jess, from APPS Mechanical preservation of koalas,” he said. “I’m sure everyone can donate $1 to help save the koalas. If everyone does something little, it will make a massive impact.” G Henshaw from the Living with Koalas program will be personally delivering all the eucalypt trees in the ute to and from schools for the SKOOLS for KOALAS initiative. As part of that program local students and teachers are given a small seedling of a eucalyptus koala food tree, and they undertake to nurture the young tree to a size when it can be planted in an area where

koalas need them most in the wild. “The aim of the program is to create food tree corridors connecting known koala habitats in the Port Macquarie and Hastings area on the NSW mid-north coast of Australia,” G explained. “If we start planting more trees than are being destroyed in koala corridors connecting known koala habitats, then the wild population has a chance of survival and regeneration. “From my research there could have been as many as 50,000 koalas in the wild in this part of the mid-north coast when the first mayor of

Port Macquarie (James McInherney) was elected in 1887. When the Koala Hospital opened in the 1970s there were probably around 25,000. Today, the new Mayor Peta Pinson has inherited a wild population of little over 2,000 with numbers rapidly decreasing. Habit loss is the main cause driving the local koala population to extinction. “For Australia to allow its iconic and much loved koala to vanish from the planet is a terrible example of human complacency, selfishness and arrogance.” Living with Koalas has also just published ‘The Good Thing About…Koalas’ which is part of its awareness and education program. The book was written by G Henshaw and illustrated by local graphic artist Ben Creighton. “It’s what I call a ‘Kidults’ book,” said G. “It has entertainment and education for children; information and motivation for adults. The content of the book forms the basis of an interactive presentation that will be presented to teachers and school children throughout the region at schools participating in the SKOOLS for KOALAS program.” To found out more about the LIVING with KOALAS program, how you can help, or to buy a copy of the ‘The Good Thing About…Koalas’ book visit www.lwk.net.au

Visiting dignitaries, members of the Dondingalong Rural Bush Fire Brigade, past and present, family and friends enjoying this distinguished brigade’s 75th anniversary celebrations at the Kalateenee Recreational Reserve in Dondingalong

Fire brigade’s 75th birthday By SUE PATERICK

RIGHT: Brigade member, Robyn Hillier, accepting her Long Service Medal for 20 years of devotion to the RFS.

It is one of the strongest and most reliable brigades in the region because of its strong leadership

ABOUT 80 people turned up last Saturday (December 2) to celebrate the Dondingalong Rural Bush Fire Brigade’s (DRBFB) 75th anniversary. It was a wonderful gathering of members past and present, people from the local community, and visiting dignitaries. After a delicious morning tea and a barbeque lunch, Lachlann Ison, Rural Fire Service (RFS) Zone Manager for Lower North Coast NSW, kicked off the official part of the day by saying he was very impressed with the Dondingalong Brigade. “It is one of the strongest and most reliable brigades in the region because of its strong leadership,” he said. “It has a big contingent of members and the special part is the family aspect.” After he acknowledged country and the Dunghutti nation for their strength, resilience and capacity, DRBFB Caption Steve Sproule attributed the brigade’s success to operating as one big family. “And we just want it to grow and prosper,” he added. Councillor Bruce Morris thanked all the Dondingalong Brigade volunteers on behalf of Kempsey Shire Council. “You are the salt of the earth and the fabric that holds this community together,” he said. The NSW RFS Assistant Commissioner, Jason Heffernan, arrived early at the celebrations and enjoyed getting to know brigade members and people from the local community. “It was brilliant to come along and meet

a brigade that has done such a good job for 75 years,” he said. “I think it has a strong future because I can see all the young people in the room.” According to Assistant Commissioner Heffernan, the Dondingalong Brigade has more than 70 members and responds not only to bush and grass fires within the area and interstate but also motor vehicle accidents. It also assists other agencies following storm

and flood activity, as experienced in Lismore earlier this year. He said the Dondingalong Brigade had fought fires in very trying conditions, and the respect afforded to members, both past and present, was testament to their dedication. “Each and every one of these volunteers is worthy of our most sincere thanks,” he added. Assistant Commissioner Heffernan also wanted to personally commend the Dondingalong

Brigade, not only for their commitment to their brigade and the RFS but also to their community. “It is the dedication of all members that will see the Dondingalong Brigade maintain a strong presence in the community into the future,” he said. Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey also acknowledged Dunghutti land and thanked Steve for his great leadership over the past 17 years. She made everyone laugh when she especially thanked Steve’s wife, Jenny, for letting her husband take on that demanding role. On a more serious note, Ms Pavey praised the Dondingalong Brigade and its volunteers for the important work they did in saving lives and property, and often in rugged terrain. She said the work they do, the training they put in and the effort they go to is amazing. “Since its humble beginnings, we have watched the Dondingalong Brigade go from strength to strength, improving their equipment and increasing the proficiency and experience of its members,” Ms Pavey said. “Today, the Dondingalong Brigade responds to incidents locally and further afield while also engaging with the local community to increase the protection of local residents.” As part of the official ceremony, DRBFB volunteer Robyn Hillier received a Long Service Medal for 20 years of devotion to the Rural Fire Service. Caption Sproule also proudly received a Long Service Medal for his 31 years of tireless dedication and distinction to the DRBFB.

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson In my short time as Mayor I’ve been encouraged by how many opportunities there are for our community to input and ‘have your say’ on the many projects and services that Council delivers. There is so much going on and Council doesn’t have all the answers, so it’s really important that we hear your thoughts on how we deliver the services that impact all our lives. Whether it’s our road network, parks and gardens, water and waste services, community development and events, or major projects, the list goes on. I would like to see greater input from our community when the opportunity is there, before projects

commence. It is too late to voice your opinion after the strategy is set, plans finalised and works are underway.

customer service centres and libraries for you to ‘have your say’ until Friday 22 December.

Many projects go on what we call ‘public exhibition’, which is your opportunity to make a submission, tell us your expectations and have your voice heard. So please, I encourage you to get involved, and not see projects underway or delivered that have not had your input, and a diverse range of views considered.

Council’s website is a really valuable resource for you to see what’s going on, and the ‘have your say’ area will provide you with many opportunities to get involved. Here you can sign up to our email alerts so you don’t miss anything, and also view a range of projects where we are seeking input. Visit our website pmhc.nsw.gov.au and click on the ‘have your say’ area.

A current project where we are seeking community feedback is the Urban Growth Management Strategy (UGMS). The UGMS is one of our most important community documents. It highlights what our community’s future might look like, and how we will plan for and manage growth, right across our region. The draft UGMS is available on our website and in our

Council staff are often out and about in our community, at events and community meetings, so please take the opportunity to have a chat about the projects we have on exhibition and help us shape our community’s future. Until next week, Peta

Bandbox set for movie comeback

Pictured: The much-loved Kempsey Bandbox Theatre about to reopen as a cinema in time for the Christmas holidays

I was shocked at how much work it takes to run just one screen, but I’m still fired up about what exciting things I can do to make the business more viable

By SUE PATERICK

SETTLE back and enjoy the latest movie releases this Christmas holidays when the Bandbox Theatre in Kempsey once again lifts its velvet curtains and the credits roll. Its resurgence as a classic country town cinema is thanks to Andrew Mercado, owner of the South West Roxy Cinema. Andrew has always wanted a second screen to offer a bigger variety and will split the latest movies between Kempsey and South West Rocks (SWR), although some movies will be exclusively screened at the Bandbox. His trial opening of the Bandbox will be on Boxing Day to coincide with all the incredible films released at that time, and will run until January 24. Its first screening will be Paddington 2, the much-awaited sequel of that popular brown bear who spreads joy and marmalade wherever he goes. If all goes well and the community supports the reopening of the Bandbox as a cinema, Andrew wants to try different ideas and host movies that are unique. He bought and re-opened the South West Roxy Cinema earlier this year because he has worked in the film industry for more than 25 years and always wanted his own cinema. “Cinemas don’t come up for sale very often,” Andrew said. “So I grabbed the chance to buy one.” His previous experience as a movie critic, television presenter, and film and television historian did not prepare him for the work

involved in running a cinema. “I was shocked at how much work it takes to run just one screen, but I’m still fired up about what exciting things I can do to make the business more viable” he said. “I’ve got to get great films that bring people through the door.” Andrew is also glad to be living somewhere

as fabulous as SWR. “I love it here,” he said. “But I wish I had more time to lie on the beach and enjoy it.” He admits it has been a hard year due to television on demand and pay TV like Netflix and Foxtel, and believes a four-cinema complex is too big for Kempsey.

“The Bandbox has a 360 degree revolving stage and there aren’t many of those about, so I think more could have been made of that classic old theatre,” he said. Currently on a well-earned break in Thailand, Andrew will reopen the South West Roxy Cinema in mid-December with the latest Star Wars movie. Geoff and Hazel Dening owned and operated the Bandbox for 33 years but closed it reluctantly in August, 2013 when they struggled to source film prints and couldn’t afford the expense of converting to digital films. Since then it has been the home of the Kempsey Singers who have put on many an entertaining play.

APPLICATIONS are now open for a new program to make access to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) easier for 1200 students living in regional and remote areas of Australia. Local students can apply for the scholarships of up to $18,000, made possible by a $24 million commitment from the Liberal National Government at the last election. This is a fantastic opportunity for local students to gain the support they need to study in fields with strong employment outcomes. These scholarships are about making student life easier for students and making STEM courses more attractive study options. I urge local students to take advantage of the opportunities these scholarships offer to get the skills they need for future jobs. All Australians, deserve to have quality education and training opportunities, no matter where they live. The program has been designed to suit the needs of rural and regional students and will support flexible arrangements, including part-time and online study. We’re also supporting the participation of rural women and indigenous people in STEM, among others, by prioritising them through the scholarship selection process. Science and innovation is recognised internationally as critical for boosting productivity, creating new jobs, enhancing competitiveness and driving economic growth. As well as tackling some of the hurdles regional and rural students face, these scholarships will help boost their numbers in STEM courses where they have been underrepresented. In 2015, 25.8 per cent of 15-64 year olds lived in regional and remote areas, but represented only 19.3 per cent of STEM enrolments. The scholarships will operate from 201718 to 2020-21, with the first round of 600 scholarships being awarded for the 2018 academic year, and a second round of 600 for 2019. The first round of applications opens today and closes on 8 January 2018. Scholarship applications for the 2019 academic year will open in the second half of 2018. Prospective vocational education, undergraduate and postgraduate students (Certificate IV to PhD) are eligible to apply for a Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarship to support them in their studies in the year ahead. For further information and to apply visit the Department of Education and Training website.

Rebate to help reduce obesity ACTIVE Kids Rebate: From January 31, 2018, parents and carers of school-aged children enrolled in an approved sport or fitness activity can receive a $100 voucher to cover registration and participation costs for that calendar year. The program supports the Premier’s priority to reduce childhood obesity by increasing participation in sport and changing physical activity behaviours of children and young people in NSW. The Active Kids Rebate will help to ease financial pressure on families so I hope that parents take advantage of this rebate and enrol their children in their preferred sport. Each child is eligible to receive one voucher every year for the next four years. The voucher can be used for registration or membership fees for structured activities of no less than eight weeks’ duration that provide a moderate to vigorous level of physical activity, including sporting pursuits, swimming lessons, structured fitness programs, outdoor education programs, dance etc. Parents will be able to apply for and download their vouchers from the Service NSW website from the end of January. The first step for parents who wish to claim the rebate is to visit sport.nsw.gov.au/activekids to read the guidelines and fact sheets to learn

Think about how to dispose of that Christmas waste WITH Christmas less than a month away, and a time when we generate more household waste, it’s a good time to make an extra effort to reduce what goes into our red bins. Christmas cards, wrapping paper and cardboard packaging can all be recycled, and should be placed in our yellow bins. Food scraps including meat, bones and prawn shells can go in the green bin, which is sent to the Cairncross Organic Resource Recovery Facility and processed into premium compost. Council Group Manager Maria Doherty is encouraging everyone to think about how we can reduce waste, or avoid waste altogether in the lead up to Christmas. “Our message is simple, ‘choose green and yellow first so your red bin won’t burst’. It’s not just a slogan, it encourages us to think about which bin should be used before we open the lid,” Ms Doherty said. Over Christmas, Council will be providing an additional yellow bin collection service. The yellow bin will be collected weekly between Monday December 25 and Friday January 5. You just need to put your yellow bin out the night before your regular collection day. No sure ‘Which Bin?’ Visit pmhc.nsw.gov.au/bins, download the Waste Info App or call Port Macquarie-Hastings Council on 6581 8111.

Canary Islands named after dogs my

DOGS were once called canaries. And canaries were once called canary birds. The story goes back a long way. Think of the Canary Islands, off the northern tip of Africa. The name Islas Canarias is likely derived from the Latin name Canariae Insulae, meaning “Islands of the Dogs”, a name applied originally only to Gran Canaria. According to the historian Pliny the Elder, the Mauretanian king Juba II named the island Canaria because it contained “vast multitudes of dogs of very large size”. The Canary Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean, off the northern part of Africa. When these people landed in the Canary Islands they were amazed at the number of dogs. So they named the largest island canaria insula, the island of dogs, and the name stuck. Another speculation is that the so-called dogs were actually a species of monk seal (canis marinus or “sea dog” was a Latin term for “seal” critically endangered and no longer present in the Canary Islands. The word canary goes back to the Latin canarius, from canis. And you have probably guessed what canis means now. It means dog. The dogs were probably not indigenous, but were probably taken to the islands by earlier

LAURIE BARBER

invaders from Spain or Africa. Wild dogs appeared in the largest island and so the group of islands eventually came to be known as the Canary Islands. Native to the islands were small birds and these birds were taken to Europe in the 16th century and were called canary birds. These birds were green, or greenish yellow, tinged with brown, and not unlike the English bird called the greenfinch. Eliezer Edwards in his 1901 dictionary said the wild birds had louder and clearer notes than the tame varieties. In Europe, the birds brought very high prices. Soon the birds’ name was shortened to canary. The dogs were long forgotten, but the name canary lingers on. Shakespeare had a go at it when he said in Henry 1V “you have drunk too much of the Canaries”.

He also said, speaking of a medicine, “that’s able to breath life into a stone and make you dance canari”. Some suggest the word cynic comes from the Canary Islands. Well, Stewart Edelstein does in his book Dubious Doublets. Then he goes on to say chenille and cynosure might be dog-based words also. What type of dogs were on the Canary Islands? My information suggests the dogs were Canary Mastiff - a large dog breed originally bred for working livestock - and a similar type of dog, a Cane Corso. Cane Corso dogs did better in small houses/ apartments whereas a presa canario, or Canary Mastiff needed more space. The Cane Corso is an Italian dog breed that is highly valued in as a companion, guard and hunting dog. Eamon Evans in his book Lord Sandwich said smart foxes avoided the Canary Islands because of the dogs. A number of words come from Canary Islands. One of these is canary, described as “a lively Spanish dance”. Another is canary wine. A third is canary bird. lauriebarber.com:lbword@midcoast.com.au

Writers vying for Varuna trip

The Writers’ House Varuna in the beautiful Blue Mountains

Indigenous writing “is important because we are the original storytellers for this country. We have been telling stories for an exceptionally long time, and we would like to continue with our practices in an environment that will help support and nurture creativity.

By SUE PATERICK

A WONDERFUL opportunity is available next month for Indigenous writers to kick-start their writing careers with the announcement of the inaugural Copyright Agency Fellowships for First Nations Writers. This exciting new program calls for both published and unpublished Indigenous writers to apply for a one-week residency at the National Writers’ House Varuna. Each residency includes full board and accommodation, including a room and a writing studio for each writer and all travel expenses to and from Varuna. Applications close at midnight on Friday, December 15. According to Varuna’s Executive Director Veechi Stuart, Australian Indigenous writing continues to represent some of the most vibrant and significant work taking place in the country today. “And Varuna is committed to supporting this work,” she said. “A $30,000 grant over three years has enabled us to announce the inaugural Copyright Agency Fellowships for First Nations Writers.” In partnership with Varuna are Magabala Books, Sydney University and the Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund. Peter Minter, Senior Lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Sydney, said like art, dance, cinema and all forms of creative expression, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander literature is central to the cultural strength and vitality of Indigenous

communities, and to how we share knowledge and understanding with one another. “Since editing the Macquarie PEN Anthology of Aboriginal Literature with Dr Anita Heiss in 2008, I’ve seen sensational growth in Indigenous writing across all genres, and the new Copyright Agency Fellowships for First Nations Writers that Varuna is offering are a terrific new development in support for these writers,” he said. As a key partner in the program, Rachel bin Salleh, from leading Indigenous publisher Magabala Books, will be involved in selecting applications for the program. Magabala Books will also undertake to appraise all works completed by writers as a result of attending the fellowship program, with an option for possible publication.

“Indigenous writing is important because we are the original storytellers for this country,” she said. “We have been telling stories for an exceptionally long time, and we would like to continue with our practices in an environment that will help support and nurture creativity.” Varuna, located in tranquil, leafy gardens in the cool and misty Blue Mountains, is a writer’s paradise known for its support of the writing process and the development of Australian literature. This two-story characterful house was the home of one of Australia’s finest 20th century writers, Eleanor Dark. Born in 1901, Eleanor loved Australia and this passion shone through her work.

Her greatest novel was the best selling The Timeless Land, published in 1941. Eleanor designed the Varuna homestead in 1939 and spent all her adult life there until she died in 1985. Her son, Michael, lived at Varuna and loved it as dearly as his parents had. When they died he had no wish to sell the property. In November, 1989 the Eleanor Dark Foundation was formed and Michael gifted his home to the foundation so it could be used as a writers’ retreat in memory of his creative parents. For further details, including how to apply, visit www.varuna.com.au or phone (02) 4782 5674.

Women urged to have new test

Stephen Douglas before and after his charity shave at the Wauchope RSL

Stephen’s a cut above By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC STEPHEN Douglas has done it again. The Wauchope local took on a dare from his mates in 2016 to shave his head for charity and this year he was back at it again. “We put donation containers all around Wauchope and Port Macquarie over the last couple of months and people have been donating through them and also at the shave last week as well,” said Stephen. “The conversation for a head shave really just started off as a dare from my mates. They dared me to shave my head and raise a couple of hundred dollars and I said that I wouldn’t - I would raise more than that. This year I raised $25 shy of $1,100 so I’m pretty happy with that

outcome.” Stephen’s chosen charity is the Riding for Disabled Association of Australia, a voluntary, nonprofit organisation, which provides opportunities for anyone with a disability to enjoy safe, healthy, stimulating, therapeutic, horse-related activities. “I’ve only had two haircuts in two years, both at this charity event,” Stephen said. “Riding for the Disabled is great for these kids and it’s not cheap to run. It costs over $1600 a year just to keep a horse. “All the money they get from these fundraisers goes to looking after the horses and all the gear they need. So it’s all to the kids and for the kids. “I’ve lived with a disability myself. I

recently got both my legs fitted. I already had one leg taken off at birth, and another one taken off a couple of years ago.” Stephen had his head shaved recently at the Wauchope RSL and says he generally enjoys the experience. “I enjoy doing the charity fundraiser for these kids and I enjoy getting my yearly haircut,” Stephen laughed. “It’s a great night and I have a few close mates as well who come along and watch me get my head shaved. I will probably continue doing it in the future.” Riding with the Disabled hold horse riding sessions every Tuesday morning at the Wauchope Showgrounds. For more information visit www.rda.org.au

MORE than one million women overdue for their Pap test are being urged to have the more effective, five-yearly Cervical Screening Test, expected to reduce cervical cancer deaths by at least 20 per cent. The state’s Chief Cancer Officer and Chief Health Officer have joined experts from Cancer Council NSW and Family Planning NSW to ensure women get the message about the new test, which detects the presence of the human papillomavirus (HPV) that may cause cervical cancer. “The previous Pap test could only detect changes in the cells once they had occurred, whereas this test will allow us to identify and monitor women with HPV, who may be at a higher risk of these changes occurring, while women who are negative for HPV will have five years before their next screen. The new test will ensure women are one step ahead of cervical cancer,” Professor Currow said. “Booking an appointment for this new test as soon as possible is vital. We know that eight out of 10 women diagnosed with cervical cancer have not had regular screening. Don’t let this be you.” NSW Chief Health Officer, Dr Kerry Chant, also urged women to speak with their GP about the new Cervical Screening Test. “Cervical screening has been one of the great public health success stories of our generation, halving both the incidence and mortality rates for cervical cancer,” Dr Chant said. Professor Karen Canfell, Director of Research at Cancer Council NSW, said, “The new program is excellent news for all women. Recent results from Australia’s largest clinical trial, Compass, have shown that the new Cervical Screening Test is substantially more effective than the Pap test. “Our research also tells us that the renewed program will reduce cervical cancer cases and deaths by at least 20 per cent.”

Neon Summer

will brighten the holidays Ruth Allen, Leigh I’Anson, Marie van Gend will lead the singing at the Bar Cappella at The Lounge Room in the Gallaria Building, Short Street

Join the pub choir for charity IF you love a good sing, but usually only in the shower or the car, now’s your chance to belt out a funky pop song with a pub-full of others at Bar Cappella at The Lounge Room on Tuesday, December 12. The pub choir craze has been gathering worldwide momentum and, while relatively new to Australia, similar events in Brisbane, Newcastle and Sydney have attracted hundreds of participants and thousands of YouTube followers. Ruth Allen, Marie van Gend and Leigh I’Anson will lead the singing in the second Bar Cappella night in Port Macquarie. October’s pilot event attracted 120 people to sing pop-idol Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You. A capacity crowd is expected at December’s event, which will raise much-needed funds for local charity McCosker House, which provides crisis accommodation

and on-going support for homeless people. No singing experience, practice or commitment is required to attend and you don’t have to be a “good” singer, the organisers say. “We believe everyone can sing”, says Ruth. “It makes you feel great, and singing in a crowd is even more fun, especially with your favourite tipple in your hand! We’ll break the song into easy parts to suit different voices, learn the parts together, and in about an hour we’ll have it nailed ready for a final sing through.” The bar will be open for singers to lubricate their vocal chords before, during and after the event. Doors and bar will open at 6pm, singing starts 7pm. Entry is $10 (over 18s only). For more information please email barcappella@ westnet.com.au or call 0409595498

For more information or to register for workshops visit glasshouse.org.au Beach Safety Reminder: The warmer weather is well and truly here, and heading down to the beach with family and friends is often top of the list for getting out and enjoying the sunshine. Whether it’s a Christmas BBQ at Flynns, a surf at Town’s or a quick dip at Bonny’s, it’s important we take care and stay safe at the beach this summer. Our local professional lifeguards and volunteer surf life savers will be patrolling seven days a week throughout the summer period across our six patrolled beaches, helping to keep us safe. While they do a fantastic job, there’s a few simple things we can all do to ensure we stay safe such as swimming between the flags, following beach signage and instructions, keeping an eye out for rips, staying hydrated and making sure you slip, slop and slap. So please take care and look out for each other while enjoying a long summer of beach fun! For more beach safety tips, visit pmhc.nsw. gov.au/beachsafety

Pet present not always best idea Parking fail leaves Lions roaring By BARBARA DYER IT’S one thing to be going through a lucky purple patch. But in the case of the Tacking Point Lions Club, the reverse has happened – literally – and a ‘purple patch’ has reversed through their Lions Park at Gaol Point, damaging the pedestals on which their life-sized lion statues recline at the entrance (pictured above). It appears that a very poor driver slammed into the statues recently, making a hash of a reverse park and leaving behind a big mess. But along with the rubble and disappointment, they also left a colour-coded clue to their identity. Lions members and police are keen to hunt down the driver who, they suspect, is probably ‘lion low’. “The lions have been there at the entrance to the Lions Park at Gaol Point since it was officially opened in February, 2016,” says Tacking Point Lions Club director Stuart Aston. “They were sourced in Brisbane and a local

artist gave them a makeover before the ribbon cutting ceremony. “Police asked whether we suspected vandals had done the damage. “I don’t think so. But we do have a clue about the car that was driven into the statues. “It was a purple car; police can tell from paint flakes left at the scene. “And there will be damage to the right rear mudguard and bumper bar. “So someone probably would know that car.” The original local stonemason who built the pedestals will be unable to help, but Stuart said, adding the ‘mane thing was’ they had found a volunteer prepared to fix the estimated $1000 damage. “We would still like the driver to answer for what has happened here though,” Stuart adds. So if you happen to spot a purple car with damage to the rear mudguard and bumper bar, the police would like to hear from you. Certainly the culprit should not go within a lion’s roar of some pretty annoyed Lions Club members.

• From Page 1 Marion’s closing advice to anyone wanting a dog or a cat is to think about adopting one from a rescue centre, as this can be a cheaper option because they come desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed, often toilet trained, and you have a two-week trial. She recommended Wally’s Animal Rescue at Wauchope and Manning Valley Animal Rescue at Taree, who are both a huge help for Kempsey animals, and of course the Kempsey Pound. Steve Arnold, RSPCA Pound Manager at Port Macquarie, echoed these sentiments. He also advised anyone thinking about getting a new dog to make sure the breed suited their lifestyle, backyard and back pocket. “If you’re going to get a dog then make sure you know what is involved with that breed,” he said. “Don’t get a Kelpie or a Staffy if you don’t have a fence or they’ll be gone, or go out and buy a Great Dane if you only have a courtyard, or buy a Husky if you can’t walk it twice a day and groom it.” Like Marion, Steve said it was important to

remember that animals were expensive. But if you were contemplating a new dog or cat why not adopt one from the RSPCA Shelter in Port Macquarie on 65810380. Not only are these furry friends behaviour assessed, they come desexed, microchipped and wormed. Steve also urged pet owners going away at Christmas not to leave their animals alone in the backyard but to put them in a boarding kennel. And if you are leaving them in the care of someone other than a kennel to make sure your contact details on the microchip are correct. “If you’ve changed your phone number and your animal gets lost then no one can contact you to say it has been found,” Steve said. His advice was to check that your details are correct with Port Macquarie/Hastings Council before going away, as they own the pound even though the RSPCA runs it. The Port Macquarie Animal Welfare Service (PMAWS) is a NSW Government registered charity that is also dedicated to the welfare of domestic animals in the Port Macquarie/Hastings area and beyond.

IN response to on-going demand, global coworking trends and a commitment to local startups, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council will open a pop up business and co-working space in Port Macquarie in January 2018. The new space will be located on the corner of Gordon and Gore Streets, and will provide a shared workspace for start-ups, freelancers, remote workers, home based and micro businesses. ‘THE HUB’ Pop Up business and co-working

space will be much more than a ‘desk for hire’ venue, but rather setup to support co-working and an incubator environment where business networking, innovation and entrepreneurship can be nurtured and encouraged. “The new hub will provide opportunities for business owners and co-workers to share resources, ideas and connect with like-minded entrepreneurs in a supported environment,” said Council Director Jeffery Sharp.

New space for local business start-ups

Skye dances to emotional win LOCAL business owner Skye Petho is on cloud nine after the recent Cancer Council NSW’s Stars of The Hasting’s Dance For Cancer event. Skye, with dance teacher Jo Rowan from Bodiline Pilates were the Judges’ Choice winners, dazzling the crowd with their routine. Skye, a cancer survivor herself who was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2016, felt this event was close to her heart. She was excited and moved by the outcome, stating that ‘this time a year ago, I couldn’t walk to the end of the break wall, so this is just so incredible’. Celebrity guest judge Helen Richey says the Hastings community were the real stars of the Dance for Cancer event, raising a record $89,000 for cancer research and support services. Best known as a celebrity judge on the television series Dancing With the Stars and as a former competitive ballroom and latin dancer, Helen said she was extremely impressed with the event. “The Hastings community has shown an incredible level of support for those affected by cancer, by getting behind this event and raising an impressive amount of money to further the vital work of Cancer Council NSW,” Richey said. The star congratulated Judges’ Choice winner Skye and Jo and said that while it was a difficult decision, the panel was impressed by their routine. “Skye and all the contestants have clearly worked really hard during many weeks of rehearsals to put on a great show tonight,” she said. “Not only that, they have shown so much dedication to raising funds to help others, and I think that is really the highlight of this wonderful event.” Alistair Flower took out the title for Highest Fundraiser, for their mammoth effort to raise

Looking dazzling - The Stars of The Hastings contestants and dance teachers with Judges Helen Richey, Vickii Byram and Gavin Rippon, Emcee Michael Crossland and Louise Beaumont and Katie Mead $31,154.52 and also wowed the crowd with his ‘Evolution of Dance’ performance to win the People’s Choice award. A range of prizes donated by local businesses were also won on the night, including holidays, massages and pamper packs, cruises, entertainment packages, and much more. Event organisers Louise Beaumont of Focus

Magazine and Katie Mead, of Cancer Council NSW, thanked all those involved in making this year’s Port Macquarie event “the best ever” in its five-year history. “The level of support from businesses and individuals in the local community has been overwhelming. We’d like to thank everyone who supported the event – those who donated;

the contestants and the dance teachers who guided them; and everyone who worked so hard behind the scene to make this event happen,” Mrs Beaumont said. “The funds raised will help further Cancer Council NSW’s life-saving research, and support services delivered right here in the Hastings.”

Marathon for sailors

THE Port Macquarie Sailing Club held their marathon race last Sunday. The race started from the club at McInherney Park, progressed down to the town green, up to the Dennis Bridge on the Pacific Highway, then back to the club. Despite the weather prediction saying otherwise, the race was sailed in sparkling sunny weather with a lovely north-easterly breeze that covered the whole course. The strong run-out tide was as predicted. With a lot of the catamarans away at Grafton sailing in a NSW/ QLD Arrow catamaran get together, it was decided to race the remaining catamaran and the monohulls as one fleet. After being late to the start line, the ever-fast Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in Flembouyant (pictured below) were first on yardstick. Then followowed Tony Walker in Deep Purple, Elsa and Simon Gandy and Caitlin in Voyager, Phil and Blake Lillehagen in Elmo, Dave Winter on Spica, Stuart Symons, James Zuirblis and Abi Param in Big Bang, and, after just under four hours of racing, Jane Cooper and Sharon Carney in Jupiter. This Sunday is the next series of sprint races starting with two backto-back races at midday, then three more back-toback races after lunch.. Jack Corthals is rostered on duty.

Swapping beach for bush By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

SOME local surf lifesavers recently swapped the beach for a very different landscape, all for a great cause. The ‘clubbies’ went west as part of the NSW Surf lifesaving’s annual Beach to Bush program. The program brings surf lifesavers to the bush to teach country kids water safety. This year there were 16 presenters who split into seven ‘tours’ and educated almost 9000 country students around NSW on surf safety. “The statistics tell us that kids who live more than 50km from the beach are the ones that will more than likely get into trouble,” said Kim Rayner from Port Macquarie Surf Life Saving Club. The presenters clocked over 9000km of travel, visiting 50 schools with over 100 presentations. “The key message for these kids is to swim between the flags and if they get into trouble to put their hand up,” Kim said. “It’s all about safety in their area as well so we told them to always swim with a friend and take an adult with them, always check the depth before entering the water, look for any submerged objects, and again most importantly, don’t go alone.” Kim has been working within the program for seven years and this year she was the lead presenter of her tour, which included her husband Paul Rayner and Tony Hallinan from Tacking Point Surf Life Saving Club. The three visited five schools in the region from Tamworth to Weilmoringle. “We did quite a remote tour where we talked to a lot of kids, some who had never been to the beach so it was important for us to teach them water safety in their creeks, rivers, and dams as well,” explained Kim. “It’s so important for these kids to know this stuff. The benefit that the kids get out of it is huge, and even the teachers say ‘oh gee we learnt something we didn’t know’.” Kim says that her team really enjoyed doing the program and would love to do the tour again in future years. “I’d love to keep going but I also want other people to enjoy it as well,” she said. “Paul and Tony would do it again in a blink of an eye.” Dale Finch from Wauchope Bonny Hills
