Fantasy “ to reality!
Owner, Jeff Crowe, left, and Tim van Eckeren stand near the well known Fantasy Glades castle which is in the process of being renovated
By CHRISTINA PARKIN HISTORIC local theme park favourite, Fantasy Glades, may be in for a fairy-tale return. A popular destination from 1968 until its closure in 2002, the mere mention of ‘Fantasy Glades’ prompts many a nostalgic conversation for many locals and visiting tourists. Recently acquired by Bathurst business owner, Mr Jeff Crowe, the land is undergoing some rehabilitation and repairs to make the area safe for a proper assessment of what is possible
for future development. “We want to keep the original character as much as possible so we intend to leave the original buildings and refurbish them,” said Mr Crowe. “It’s a big job - we have been massively cleaning up the site, removing rubbish and vandalised items, replacing rails and making the electrical wiring safe again.” Acknowledging the need to work closely with the Port Macquarie Hastings Council, Mr Tim

van Eckeren has been charged with exploring what is possible under the State Government Environmental Planning Policies (SEPPs). “We had an initial meeting before Christmas and given the go-ahead to clean and tidy the site, which is what we are doing before another meeting at the end of February,” Mr van Eckeren said. “It won’t be until that meeting that will we have any idea of how our growing ‘wish’ list can or can’t be accommodated.

We want to keep the original character as much as possible
“It is only then we can start working on the Developmental Application process.” Some of the ideas have included a café/ restaurant and a memorabilia display, but anything proposed has to be compatible with the environment, the koala habitat and the neighbours explained Jeff Crowe. FRONT PAGE AD “It could take us up to two years to achieve what we want – a viable, sustainable operation which will attract locals and tourists,” said Mr van Eckeren.

Graduation milestone “
CSU has concentrated on establishing those courses that will lead to employment and retaining graduates in the area
“
By CHRISTINA PARKIN CHRISTMAS and New Year weren’t the only recent significant milestones celebrated on the mid north coast. The Port Macquarie Campus of Charles Sturt University (CSU) also hosted its first graduation ceremony at the Glasshouse. Of the 197 graduates, there were 32 from the first intake of students at Port Macquarie, but there was such an overwhelming response from graduates from other campuses and online who opted to graduate at Port Macquarie that the auditorium was filled. A ceremonial procession along Hay Street to the Glasshouse was led by a Scottish piper, followed by the Mayor, Mr Peter Besseling, Federal MP for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie and CSU academics led by Chancellor Dr Michele Allan, Vice Chancellor Professor Andrew Vann and Head of Campus, Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Heather Cavanagh. “This really is an exciting day for both CSU and the Port Macquarie region,” said Professor Cavanagh. “The CSU campus has been going from strength to strength and is here to stay. We really wanted to thank the community by putting on a memorable celebration.” “In establishing a campus in Port Macquarie, CSU hoped to develop a sustainable learning community dedicated to the growth and prosperity of the region and its people. With our graduates now heading out into the community and working for the community, we are another step closer to realising this vision.” Among the students graduating will be those who have studied on campus for the last three years in the Bachelors of Accounting, Applied Science, Business, Clinical Practice (Paramedic), Creative Arts and Design, Criminal Justice, Education, Social Science and Social Work programs. “CSU has concentrated on establishing those courses that will lead to employment and retaining graduates in the area – they will be the trainers, leaders and teachers of tomorrow,” Professor Cavanagh said. “The community has been amazing in its support for the university and CSU would like to especially thank them for the opportunities in workplace learning that have been offered to our students.” Local Port Macquarie student, Ms Ebony
Above: Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic) graduate Ms Ebony Langdon gave the vote of thanks from the students. Below: Charles Sturt University academic procession through the streets of Port Macquarie led by Mayor Peter Besseling, Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Vann and Chancellor Dr Michele Allan.
Langdon, graduated with a Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic) and was invited to present the vote of thanks on behalf of the students at the graduation ceremony. Ebony always wanted to be a paramedic and found the smaller cohort of 24 students at Charles Sturt University in Port Macquarie an excellent way of pursuing her studies. “Every day is different when working in the community. I like that you know you have good support when exposed to constant trauma and it is important that you speak up by debriefing instead of hiding its effects,” she said.
Ebony participated in work placement activities organised by Senior Lecturer in Paramedics, Joe Acker, in the London Ambulance Service and Thailand, as well as in Lismore. “Embrace every opportunity that you get offered,” she said. “You don’t know where it will lead.” Ebony has accepted an offer with the South Central Ambulance Service in Oxford, UK, from next month. She is one of at least twelve in her cohort who have gained employment with overseas paramedical services.
Visitors to forest urged to read signs LOCALS and visitors are being reminded to pay attention to road closures and warning signs when visiting Kerewong State Forest, west of Kendall, during timber harvesting operations. Forestry Corporation of NSW’s Wauchopebased Harvest Manager, Peter Levitzke, said some areas around the forest worksites would be closed for the community’s safety. Mr Levitzke said the popular camping and picnic area, Swans Crossing, would remain open and accessible during the summer school holidays. “We encourage locals and visitors to get out and enjoy Kerewong State Forest, but please keep in mind that it is a working forest and there will be heavy vehicles and machinery operating in the forest so we will need to close parts of the forest from time to time,” Mr Levitzke said. “With ideal conditions, this operation will be completed over the next three months by late March, 2016. “Harvest and haulage operations typically take place from Monday to Friday and there may also be some work on weekends. “While this work is going on we ask that people pay extra attention to road closures, speed limits and warning signs and stay well away from restricted areas. “We put barriers and signs in place for safety, so please don’t attempt to walk, drive or cycle past or around them – it is not only unsafe to enter forest worksites but it is also illegal. “There are plenty of camping areas and trails within Kerewong State Forest that will remain open for recreational activities and we encourage locals to get out and explore these areas. “Timber harvested from this operation will be supplied to processors in and around the Mid North Coast of NSW for housing construction, landscaping material such as fencing, and wood and paper products, creating a steady source of local work and revenue.” During the forestry operations Kerewong Road will be intermittently closed and a detour used to maintain access through the Kerewong State Forest. For more information contact Forestry Corporation’s Wauchope office on (02) 6585 3744 or visit forestrycorporation.com.au/visit or #visitnswforests on Facebook for more visitor information.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Well here we are; we made it to 2016…phew! What a crazy year we had in 2015 and I have to say the break over Christmas and New Year was just not long enough. I could easily have taken an extra month off and ignored the world for a bit longer but, newspaper land calls and as they say, there is no rest for the wicked. So as we launch ourselves headlong in to 2016 I wonder what the year will bring. Whatever happens, I believe it will be better than last year…another adventure in to the land of the unknown. It’s both scary and exciting at the same time as we ease into our first paper for the year. ‘Ease’ is probably not the right word…we came back on Monday to put the whole paper to print by Tuesday evening, so it is actually a shock to the system and more a case of organised chaos…but I’m going to stick with ‘ease’! Makes me feel calm and collected…rather than like some sort of crazy psychopath going through a major episode! As we focus on getting back into stride for the year to come I think it is a good opportunity to take stock again, learn from past mistakes, look forward to a positive future and be grateful for all we have in life…and maybe, look at how we can use the blessings we have to help others in need?

Car park battle a ‘combined effort’ I WISH to comment on a recent story, ‘RAN’s frustration’. John Tingle, President, stated that RAN started with a purpose in 2003 and now we have lost our purpose. Maybe Mr Tingle should return to the original purpose of RAN and then the community will consider becoming involved again with the organisation. Mr Tingle’s assertion that RAN led the charge in Woolworths pulling out of its bid for the Port Macquarie Plaza Car Park needs scrutiny. No individual or community group was solely responsible for the outcome. The whole community had their say to government and Woolworths in their own way.
As one of the Port Macquarie Country Labor group who started the petition to keep the car park in public hands, I stood on the street for a month gathering signatures from 12,600 community members and heard their passionate stories about why the car park site shouldn’t belong to Woolworths. The Greens felt so strongly about this issue that they stood side by side with us gathering signatures and talking to the locals. Mick Veitch, MLC and Courtney Houssos, MLC both visited Port Macquarie to see for themselves what was proposed by Crown Lands to be sold off without community consultation. Kristy
Quill delivered the petition to the State Upper House and lobbied many Labor MPs on the situation before the petition was presented to parliament. Over the past year or two, Port Macquarie Hastings Council organised community consultations at the Glasshouse to hear from residents with a view to following their wishes. When they discovered Crown Lands had called for a public Expression of Interest in this site, they submitted a proposal incorporating the community’s feedback. An angry crowd met the Crown Land and Woolworths representatives at Panthers and strongly defended our right to have our say in what happens
to that foreshore site. The local chamber of commerce took a strong stand against the Woolworths proposal and also put pressure on Council and our elected representatives not to go ahead with the Woolworths proposal. Port Macquarie Branch of Country Labor has consulted with the community over a long period of time and then works to implement their wishes. Just look at the petition to buy back the hospital, the petition to reroute the buses and this petition to keep the Plaza Carpark in public hands. Sandra Wilson Port Macquarie

Hospital dilemma HAVING read Billie Scott’s letter in the Independent (Dec 24), I would like to thank her for bringing this problem to light that people are flown to Sydney from Port Macquarie to have major heart operations, then after have to make their own way home. My own husband had the same fate after a heart by-pass, but thank goodness he had a family to help
him get home although it was very traumatic as he really wasn’t fit enough to make the journey by road. We had to get clearance by a doctor for him to fly and even then he had to get a taxi to the airport and a wheelchair to the plane. He was also very sick on the plane. Then how much worse is it for an elderly person to have to make their own way home not having family to help. So a simple form to say this person

is without family and will need help to get home would surely help. This happens all across our country and I will never forget a lady I met at a Sydney hospital who after cancer treatment and looking very ill had to travel 700km to a farm in NSW. Surely the Health Department can do better than this and ‘yes’ I will be witting to them. Miriam Cook Port Macquarie

TO the ‘people’ who stole/removed our wooly shrubs from where we we’re trying to beautify and improve the public area at the rear or our home. We are relatively new to Port and have been working on the area for the past year and you come along and just help yourself. It really does reflect badly on what we thought was a decent place to live. Your crime has been reported to the police and we hope that you care for the plants better than you care for other people.
TO the wonderful service at Chequers on Lord. Excellent coffee served with biscuits. An added bonus.
TO the petty person that wrote in complaining about people’s attire after training. Mind your own if people want to hug someone in sweaty Lycra so be it. It is their choice not your’s and if people want to go out in public in it, who cares it isn’t hurting you in anyway. What about the young girls that walk around in short shorts and short skirts with a mid-drift showing. Are you going to complain about that too?
Thumbs Up Thumbs Up IT pays to have your name and address on your walking stick. Thank you very much to the gentleman who kindly delivered my walking stick to me at home after I left it at the Supermarket. There are still kind people in this world! It was much appreciated.
I WOULD like to congratulate the Busways bus drivers who work the Crestwood area and surrounding areas. During the morning peak traffic period, it is a most frustrating time to attempt to gain entry on to Ocean Drive. But with the courtesy of these drivers who hold up the traffic at Crestwood roundabout and allow a certain number of cars out onto Ocean Drive. Well done guys you are a credit to your profession and your company.

What a beauty!
Christmas can have hangover
New Crescent Head surf club is a stand-out By SUE PATERICK
FOR 95 years there has been a surf club at Crescent Head to protect beach goers while swimming in this beautiful smiling bay, but it has never been quite as stylish as the new building. Award-winning, Nesson Murcutt Architects, designed the building and local firm, O’Donnell and Hanlon, built it. Set to officially open in mid-February, the new club is built of glazed bricks the colour of pipi shells and glass. Its sail shape sits on the headland like a yacht bobbing in the sparkling blue sea beyond. Upstairs the function room’s floor to ceiling windows give uninterrupted ocean views, the perfect backdrop for weddings or events, while downstairs is for surf lifesaving activities. There is also a kiosk on the lower level, which is already doing a brisk trade in food and coffee. The old surf club, built in 1974, had to be demolished because it was riddled with brick and concrete cancer. When they realised it couldn’t be saved several years ago, President, Scott Edwards, said they met with the then local member, Rob Oakeshott, who secured $2.2 million in Federal Government funding. The State Government also supplied $305,000. “Hopefully the new surf club will be maintenance free for a while and will be a source of income and attract new members,” Mr Edwards said. The first Kempsey Crescent Head Surf Lifesaving Club opened in December 1921.
From left, president Scott Edwards with fellow volunteers Annie Dillon, Gavin Burke, Ross Allan, Todd Jones, Carl Thurgood and Steve Pellen on patrol outside the new Kempsey Crescent Head Surf Lifesaving Club. According to Mr Edwards, women weren’t allowed to join back then so a ladies’ surf club was built where the fish-cleaning tables are now. In about 1984 that land was exchanged for a shed in Kempsey so they could store their gear and train on the Macleay River. The club currently has 65 active volunteer members, but combined with Nippers and other associated members that number rises to 250. The volunteers only patrol the beach on weekends and public holidays, while paid lifesavers, often surf club members from throughout the Macleay Valley, patrol the beach
on weekdays during the summer school holidays. Mr Edwards, who left the Macleay Valley to study at university, returned home to live and work in a place he loved and has been a member of the surf club since 2002. “It’s a great organisation to be involved with because its members keep our beaches safe and we get to give back to the community in a volunteer capacity, ” he said. The Kempsey Crescent Head Surf Life Saving Club will launch a new website soon for anyone wishing to become a member, book a function or join the Nippers.

NSW Fair Trading Acting Commissioner John Tansey is urging traders and consumers to know their rights under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) to ensure any post purchase blues and buyer’s regrets are lawfully resolved. Mr Tansey said that January is typically a busy month for Fair Trading, with consumers seeking advice on lodging complaints due to post Christmas purchase problems. “I urge consumers to seek advice from Fair Trading if in doubt about their lawful options in dealing with returns and refunds after the holiday season. “The agency can help clarify shoppers’ rights and help retailers understand their obligations,” he said. “Under the ACL, goods and services bought from a trader come with automatic Consumer Guarantees, including that products must match any description or samples, must be of acceptable quality, must be fit for the purpose it was sold for and must be free from defects.” If consumers are dissatisfied with the response from a trader they can lodge a complaint with Fair Trading online at the Fair Trading website or at any ServiceNSW centre. Mr Tansey said consumers may suffer post purchase bill shock, especially when credit card statements arrive or an interest or charge free special Christmas offer period expires. Fair Trading provides funding for 33 financial counselling services across the state, so anyone having ongoing problems with post-Christmas bills should seek help via the Credit and Debt Hotline 1800 007 007. PROBLEM. This living/kitchen area made a dramatic statement, but for all the wrong reasons; it was very dark. It required the homeowners to rely upon electric light, even during the daytime to provide adequate lighting. SOLUTION. Solutube Daylighting Systems were installed. This provided plenty of task lighting to the centre of the space, as well as an abundance of soft natural light for the rest of this area. Party has no-drugs message ‘We want people to dance all night and have a great time’
By LIZZIE McLEOD ORGANISERS of this weekend’s electronic dance party, Summer Intensive, are confident their strong anti-drugs message will ensure an incident-free good time for revelers. “We just don’t tolerate drugs”, says Lisa Willows, RAWR Music PR representative for Summer Intensive, which will be hosted at the Port Macquarie Hotel on Saturday (January 9). “It’s just not that kind of atmosphere and we will have full security at the event.”
In recent months music festivals across Australia have been plagued by a spike in drug arrests and two reported deaths from drug use at music events. The recent ‘Field Day Festival’ in Sydney saw more than 180 people charged with drug offences and a partygoer who came close to death. NSW Premier Mike Baird has declared ‘enough is enough’. “Individuals need to take responsibility for their actions, but so do the organisers of these festivals”, said Mr Baird.
Ms Willows said Saturday night’s Summer Intensive would be a safe and fun environment for partygoers. “It’s just a fun thing. We want people to dance all night and have a great time. There will be no place for anything bad to happen.” Summer Intensive will feature some of Australia’s biggest DJs and finest electronic dons, including Bombs Away, Sonic Boom and Lawd. “We are excited to announce such a powerful artillery of names playing at Summer Intensive,”
said organiser Shaun Dunn. “It’s exciting to be able to provide some highend players of the electronic dance music scene to the Port Macquarie area,” added Ms Willows. Party boys Bombs Away are ARIA nominated and have a plethora of platinum releases to their name. Bombs Away are on high rotation airplay around the world and are one of the few acts to hold down five concurrent Top 10 tracks on the ARIA, Billboard, iTunes, and Beatport charts simultaneously. • See full preview in Entertainment, Page 13.
Road safety focus
OPERATION #ArriveAlive is a state-wide high visibility Traffic and Highway Patrol operation focussing on reducing road trauma and will run until January 26. Since the launch of Operation Arrive Alive on December 18 884 people have been caught drink driving and 13,645 have been caught speeding, which is 647 more than this time last year. Commander of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Assistant Commissioner John Hartley, continues to warn that police are out in force our roads. “Police continue to target unsafe driving on our roads with numerous incidents causing concern for both us and the majority of motorists who obey the law.” “The fact that we have already issued 647 more speeding infringements during this year’s Operation is one area of concern”. Key Statistics also include 703,963 breath tests with 884 PCA charges, 1250 major crashes and 15 fatalities. As part of Operation Arrive Alive, double demerit points applied for speeding, mobile phone use, seatbelt and helmet use until midnight of January 3, but will recommence from January 22 to January 26 inclusive. Members of the Dhungang Mob Men’s Group Wayne Anderson, Adam Robertson, Ben Dorsett, Uncle Maurie Pollock, Mike Vegter, Uncle Bill O’Brien, John and Jason Gibbs in front of the mural at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital.
Mural provides link with Indigenous tradition By CHRISTINA PARKIN A MURAL at the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, depicting a large sawed-down tree stump with many different tracks of animals and birds leaving the stump, was unveiled by the Mayor, Peter Besseling, recently. The images signify the loss of the home and food source offered by the tree for so many animals, who have to relocate and find other homes. It took two and a half months to paint using traditional and non-traditional methods with suggestions and guidance from Birpai elders.
The mural was developed as a result of a Council ‘place making grant’ applied for by the Koala Preservation Society, in conjunction with the Birpai Aboriginal Land Council. Uncle Bill O’Brien said: “I’d like to say thank you to the Koala Hospital for developing the project and working with the men’s group to create and paint this mural. It has brought them all closer together, and thanks to all the women, who also gave up their time.” Inspired by the experience of collaboration, many of the members of the men’s group are looking for other opportunities to paint
traditional stories and folk-lore. Port Macquarie High student, Jason Gibbs, 16, enjoyed the experience as a way of relaxing and keeping his mind off school. “We painted a mural at school last year of all the family totems and that was a good way of keeping us interested at school,” said Mr Gibbs. “It’s really exciting to see the young people come along to contribute to this mural – it’s so heart-warming,” said Uncle Maurie Pollock. “We’d like to extend that experience with a camp so they can learn some more traditional ways.”
Take stroke action
THE National Stroke Foundation has a deadly serious message for all Australians: delaying calling an ambulance if you may be experiencing a stroke could cost you your life. The Foundation is urging Australians to put their health first during the holidays by being aware of the signs of stroke and taking fast action when stroke strikes. National Stroke Foundation Director of Advocacy Scott Stirling said it was tragically common for stroke patients to delay calling an ambulance during the festive season for fear of disrupting their family’s holiday plans. “Stroke is a serious medical emergency which requires urgent medical attention. However too many people, particularly older Australians, ignore the signs or symptoms for fear of being a nuisance to their family and friends,” Mr Stirling said.

A century of family farming
7
Black spot deadline extended
CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
Ian and Peggy Battle at their picturesque and historic Dondingalong family farm
By Sue Paterick FIVE generations of the Battle family have farmed fertile creek flats and rolling green hills in a pocket of picturesque Dondingalong for more than 100 years. With three grandchildren and one on the way, Ian and Peggy Battle get to fondly watch the sixth generation growing up on the family farm. Ian’s Great Granddad, Elijah (Fred) Battle, came from England and took up dairy farming on this pretty 243-hectare property that is bordered by Dungay Creek and Adelaide Brook. Back then Battle land stretched to Pipers Creek, known as Rainbow’s End. “In the early days before power they had to milk by hand but then later they used a generator,” Ian said. Generations of Battle children, including Ian, also went to Dondingalong Public School. Before the 1930s, it was only open every second week.
On the alternate week the teacher went to Sherwood School, so the Dondingalong children had to make the 30-minute ride there and back. “They used to ride double and barefoot on horseback,” Ian said. When Ian went to Dondingalong Public School himself it was fulltime and he sometimes rode his horse there too, leaving it to graze with others in the school’s horse paddock. That little country school must have had a good effect on him because he went to Armidale to study agriculture and science at university to become a high school teacher. He met Peggy, a fellow science teacher, at Forbes High School. They married in 1975 and moved to Sydney. In 1981 they took over the family farm from Ian’s Dad, Ray, becoming dairy farmers like their ancestors before them. Ian had been helping his Dad run the farm during the school holidays so coming home was easy. While they both wanted to raise their children
in the country, for a city girl like Peggy it was a real tree change. “I had to learn a hell of a lot,” she said. Life on the land may have changed over a century, but it’s still a working farm. These days Ian and Peggy raise beef cattle, having sold their dairy herd back in 2007, and the market is good at the moment. They sell at local sales and to local butchers. Both their children live on the farm in their own homes and both have careers, Tim is a mechanic and Ellen a nurse. And both Ian and Peggy believe having a trade to fall back on is important for farmers with smaller properties. Yet while it may be a hard way to make a living sometimes due to markets and weather, they wouldn’t swap their life for quids. Ian’s greatest joys are growing great crops of corn to feed his herd of Angus cross Santa Gertrudis cattle and working in his tractor. ‘No one knows where I am and I have time to think,” he says.
THE Federal Government has announced the deadline for public nominations for round 2 of the mobile black spots program has been extended from December 31, 2015, to January 15, 2016. The new closing date will ensure individuals and community groups in our local area have enough time to get their nominations in after the festive season and reflects the significant demand for improved mobile coverage in rural, regional and remote Australia. Under round two of the program, the Government will commit $60 million to improve mobile coverage in areas reported as having poor or no mobile coverage by the community. This is on top of the $100 million investment in round one, which has already seen the first of 499 new and upgraded mobile base stations in regional and remote Australia start to roll out. A map of the regional mobile black spot locations and locations which will receive mobile base stations under round 1 is available at www.nationalmap.gov.au Nominations for round two of the Black Spot Mobile program can be made online at www. communications.gov.au/blackspots

Drug news welcomed FEDERAL Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie has welcomed news the Commonwealth will invest more than $1 billion to give all Australians with Hepatitis C affordable access to breakthrough cures. Patients eagerly awaiting these improved treatments received a great bonus for Christmas with news that groundbreaking new drugs which are taken by mouth for 8 to 12 weeks, and which offer 90 per cent cure rates, are now approved to go onto the PBS on March 1, 2016. Doctors and patients alike have been eagerly awaiting these listings onto the PBS because up till now it cost patients up to $100,000 for the course of treatment, (unless the patient was part of early trials or compassionate use protocols) which ruled out most patients. Now due to the PBS subsidy it’s going to be $37.70 per script for general patients or $6.10 per concession script.

HAPPY New Year and best wishes for 2016. Before ploughing on and charging into the New Year, it’s a great time for us all to reflect on some of the special moments in 2015. Two in particular near the end of the year stand out for me. Firstly, I was fortunate to present Port Macquarie Hastings Council’s leadership award at the very first prize giving ceremony at Lake Cathie Primary School. Principal, Jock Garven has done an incredible job and congratulations go to all staff, parents, teachers, and students of course, for the wonderful school spirit they have created. Secondly, I attended another inaugural awards ceremony - the first Graduation Day for Charles Sturt University in Port Macquarie at the Glasshouse. It was exciting to be part of the capacity audience seeing about 150 university graduates receive their degrees in front of their family and friends. It’s a day they will never forget and a day that will continue to grow in significance as CSU continues to expand in Port Macquarie and the new campus is finished in the next few months. It certainly looks like 2016 has started well. The water is warm and the surf is up … and plenty of people are enjoying the beauty and hospitality of our area. I love the new look Visitor Information Centre in the Glasshouse in Port Macquarie. The first stage of the refurbishment has come up really

well and has generated much interest. 2016 is looking to be a huge year for council, with many projects in the Camden Haven, Hastings Valley and Port Macquarie on target to be completed. The Stingray Creek Bridge across the Camden Haven River has been a long time coming, but is now progressing well. The roundabout on Ocean Drive near the new Lake Cathie Primary School is almost complete, as is work on Hastings River Drive in Port Macquarie The new sewage pump station on the North Shore is being built and the connections for residents are being rolled out. The upgrade of the Port Macquarie Indoor Sports Stadium to a six-court facility is in full swing. At Town Beach, the kiosk and Marine Rescue upgrade is happening and the toilet facilities at the skatepark are almost ready to begin. So get ready for 2016. It’s going to be busy!
Good use of old phones AS phone upgrades and gifts over the holidays and summer sales are expected to peak MobileMuster and The Salvation Army are calling on Australians to recycle their old mobiles and accessories to help families in need. MobileMuster, Australia’s official, notfor-profit government accredited mobile phone recycling program, estimates the 22.5 million old unused mobiles stored in homes will continue to rise through January as nearly half of the Australian population will think of buying, or are going to buy, a new mobile during the summer sales. Despite record awareness of mobile phone recycling, Australians are still reluctant to part with old phones – some of which don’t even work. To keep old phones out of drawers and to put them to good use this summer MobileMuster will give $2 to the Salvation Army for every kilogram that is recycled with them in January. “As new mobiles are bought old ones end up lying around in drawers unused and potentially ending up in the rubbish,” said Rose Read, Recycling Manager from MobileMuster. There are over 3,500 drop-off points around Australia for consumers to recycle their old mobile phones, battery and accessories, alongside a free post back recycling satchel available from any Australia Post or a reply-paid downloadable label online at mobilemuster.com.au
Here’s cheers to origins of teetotaller
I HAVE met some drunks over the years, although the frequency has dropped in recent years, no doubt because of breath tests and the closure of some clubs. I was a guest speaker with no notice at a dinner in Tulare, California, once but the chairman placed me between the bar and the toilet, which was not a wise move, and I finished up being a traffic cop for the people who couldn’t wait because they had consumed too much alcohol. Then there was a wedding at Singleton when the groom was laid out and placed on a stretcher before the ‘I do’ bit. Dr Rudolph Brasch, a religious man whose many books include How Did Sex Begin, said in the book How Did It Begin that the Bible gave Noah the credit for making the first wine. But I digress. I set out to write about teetotaller, a word that describes those people who don’t want to be associated with strong liquor. The word has a few origins. Richard (‘Dicky’) Turner went to a temperance meeting in Preston, Lancashire, in September, 1833, while he was still half drunk. Richard used the word teetotaller. Some say he stuttered and the ‘tee’ was his attempt to say nothing but total abstention would do. His speech allegedly was in favour of total abstinence from
my

intoxicating liquors, in preference to abstinence from ardent spirits only, as practised from early temperance reformers. But the word teetotal caught on. Opponents of those who abstained from strong liquor made fun of those teetotallers, so the temperance people adopted the word. The first use I could find came from the Preston Temperance Advocate of April 29, 1834, when a signed letter mentioned a person who ‘is now a tee-total abstinence member and is an ornament to the society’. The same magazine on May 31 of the same year said its membership was about 196 ‘and the tee-totals about 30’. In 1840 a man was described as ‘a very useless member of society and a tee-total nonproductive’. I won’t mention his name, in case you are related to him. The Devil’s Advocate of 1881 said a
Telegraph Point Sport and Recreation Club
teetotaller described someone who abstained from strong drink ‘sometimes tolerably totally’. So, you could belong to the temperance society if you were only half drunk. Some say the letter T stands for temperance, but I could find no proof of that. Subsequent discoveries showed that Richard Turner was not the first to use the word teetotal. Eliezer Edwards in his 1901 dictionary says it was used in Sir James Spence’s Tour in Ireland in 1829 as an adverb used by the working classes, but with no reference to alcohol. John Ayto in his Dictionary of Word Origins says James Hall used it in his Legends of West Philadelphia, possibly to give emphasis to the word total. Webster’s Dictionary (an American dictionary) says ‘teetotaler’ is a cant word formed in England. My big Oxford dictionary says teetotaller or teetotaler is ‘a total abstainer’ from any alcoholic drink. The headstone where Richard Turner is buried reads ‘author of the word teetotal as applied to the abstinence from all intoxicating liquors, who departed this life on the 27th day of October, 1846, aged 56 years’. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.

“
By CHRISTINA PARKIN A RECENT visit to Tacking Point Public School by a South Korean teacher and five Year 5 and 6 students for a homestay and school visit, was officially recognised by a signing of a Sister School Memorandum of Understanding via videoconference and a South Korean tea ceremony. It is the third year a party from South Korea’s fifth largest city in Daejon have spent time on the coast. Hakha Elementary School teacher, Ahn Jihye, said her students never fail to be impressed by the big night sky, seeing the Southern Cross, the beautiful beaches and the amazing amount of wildlife, like koalas and birds, in the school area. Ms Ahn said the Korean students found some things very different, like Australian school and study hours and contending with insects in the home. Ms Ahn presented the school with a traditional South Korean tea ceremony set and enjoyed displaying how tea is served in a Korean
setting to the young students. Tacking Point Public students are yet to take the flight north, but through regular videoconferences they are developing a strong bond with their sister school partners and have an understanding of Korean culture and some words of the Korean language – Hangol. Tacking Point Public Asian Connexion coordinator, Karen Jones, said her rural students enjoy comparing their hometown with the surrounds of Hakha in Daejon, which crams together 1.5 million people, mostly in skyscraper apartment blocks. “The students are amazed by the city of Daejon and are inspired by the many projects and technology presentations through the year,” Ms Jones said. “We have cooked different foods, compared recreational activities and sports, chatted and presented and shared our similarities and differences. “Music is often performed and shared between
the schools on videoconference and our school band learned to play the South Korea National Anthem.” Ms Jones said that as well as building a better appreciation of each other’s cultures and opening
their minds to other people, students were developing confidence to converse through a live camera, to relax with distant friends and present different topics. When asked to identify differences that were remarkable to her, Ms Jones highlighted the personal discipline displayed by the Korean students and how much they highly value their teachers. “Korean schools have a focus on numeracy and literacy and any learning about arts or music is done after they have finished school for the day,” remarked Ms Jones. “Many of the students find it fascinating and personally connect to the point that many have kept in contact – the equivalent of an electronic penfriend.” South Korea ranks third in nations taking Australian exports, sixth delivering imports to Australia and is our fourth strongest trading partner. Ties between Australia and the emerging economic superpower are expected to strengthen further following the signing of the Free Trade Agreement by both nations.

We never stop learning in life
AT the end of a frantic year we are all keen to fall into the armchair at home and enjoy Christmas, family and counting our blessings. But while we reflect on the benefits of living in such a wonderful place, as well as thinking of those who need our help to give their lives some more cheer, it’s good to remember what we’ve learnt. Adults often forget that we’re learning as much as the kids, it just doesn’t feel like that when we’re not ‘in school’. Change happens every few weeks in the world of technology, rules and regulations for work, office systems and new products and services. So we’re always in need of learning new things. SkillsLink Training has spent over 30 years helping adults to learn new things and we’re proud of helping many people on the mid north coast to build new lives. It will be even more intense than ever in 2016, with changes happening in all sorts of industries, human services, health and education. Never fear! We can help you find new ways to absorb the changes surrounding you, and it can even be fun! Whether you’re wanting to brush up on literacy and numeracy, learn new computer or social media skills, or just freshen up your first aid training, we can help plan a series of lessons to fit your pace of learning and time of day. Specialist areas we have developed over the past two years include assisting young people who don’t fit industrial schooling and adults living with disability or mental health challenges. Also, women who are trying to reenter the workforce after some time away. Whatever your field of learning, we can help you to fit into a new rhythm of life with classes that combine friendly peers, supportive teachers, and a college environment that’s fun and funky. Please call in at SkillsLink Training, 77 Hastings River Drive, and you can also ring 6583 7288, and visit our website on www. skillslinktraining.com.au.

Real meaning of Christmas CHRISTMAS came early for REAP Port Macquarie with Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation providing a $33,500 grant for a brand new refrigerated van to support the expansion of the local food rescue program. The grant from Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation will allow the program to meet the increasing demand for its daily food rescue service which feeds disadvantaged young people and families in the Hastings community, according to REAP Coordinator, Katrina Humble. “With the grant from the Charitable Foundation, we’ve been able to provide our volunteers with a new refrigerated van to improve the quality and consistency of food we
collect from fruit shops, butchers, supermarkets and bakers to distribute among local charities,” Mrs Humble said. “By sourcing the fresh food from local businesses free of charge, the REAP program allows local charities to use more of their funding for other community support services and save on purchasing food.” Established in Port Macquarie in 2011, the REAP program connects local food businesses with charities to benefit people in need and reduce the volume of edible food going to waste, with local volunteers until now relying on personal or ageing vehicles to meet the increasing demand for food collection. “The Charitable Foundation is very pleased to provide this grant as it not only ensures the program is sustainable and volunteers don’t have
to use their own cars for food collection but it also enables REAP to expand their services and help even more people in need in the Hastings,” said Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation Executive Officer, Jason Bourke. “We congratulate all the REAP volunteers on their dedicated service, which is clearly paying off, based on the growing recognition of and demand for the service,” Mr Bourke said. The Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation provides more than $1.5 million in grants each year, totaling over $14 million to date, for projects and programs which support and assist young people or improve health and wellbeing outcomes for the disadvantaged throughout the Hunter, Mid North Coast, Central West, Central Coast, Northern Rivers and New England regions.
THEY may appear to be a pretty tree growing in many properties in Kempsey Shire but the Cockspur Coral Tree (pictured) is anything but and council will be on a mission to control this highly invasive noxious weed. A portion of the funding from council’s environmental levy will be used in this major operation in controlling this weed along council’s roadsides and high risk sites aimed at reducing its detrimental impact on the natural environment. Cockspur Coral Tree Erythrina cristagalli, and Coral Tree Erythrina x sykessi were both introduced to Australia because of their ornamental scarlet to dark red flowers and ease of propagation but unfortunately they have now become a significant problem, particularly around floodplains and waterways on the North Coast of New South Wales. Coral Trees reproduce from broken stems and branches while the Cockspur Coral Tree which has recently been declared a Class 3 Noxious Weed, similarly reproduces from broken stems in addition to producing seeds that are readily dispersed in floodwater. In the Macleay the present infestations are relatively localised along the riverbanks between Gladstone and Kinchela but over the coming months, noxious weeds officers will be inspecting properties to identify if Cockspur Coral Trees are present and issuing control orders if necessary. The public may also notice these weeds being removed from public places such as roadside vegetation in towns.
It is important that these localised infestations are controlled now before the widespread extent of the invasion occurs, as has happened in the Lismore area rendering many properties unusable without significant weed management investment and facing the problem being spread downstream during flood events. Cockspur Coral Trees can be controlled either mechanically or with herbicide. If you are removing the trees by hand be sure to put branches in the red bin as they can easily spread
in garden waste. Where trees have been eradicated along riverbanks it is good practice to replant with local Macleay floodplain native plants (long-stem seedlings are recommended) to stop riverbank erosion and to improve aquatic environmental conditions. These are available from many local nurseries. If you have seen Cockspur Coral trees please report it to your local council Weeds Officer at Kempsey Council on 6566 3200.

HOW often during the school holidays are you likely to hear “I’m bored” from the kids? Computer Capers Minecraft School is a unique vacation care program being offered in Port Macquarie from Monday January 11, running between 9 and 3:30pm each week day with an option for morning or afternoon only sessions at St Joseph’s Primary School hall in Warlters Street, near the Westport Marina. This Minecraft meet up was designed by IT teacher, Robert Walker, after identifying a need to cater for kids that are motivated and orientated by technology and design. If you haven’t heard about Minecraft, it’s a computer game that uses virtual building blocks and teems with opportunities for creative problem-solving. Like it or loath it, nothing will change the fact that kids love building online worlds where they are only limited by their imagination. “Many of our kids’ parents have been swept into the myriad of Minecraft conversations about rocks and minerals, sand and glassmaking, jungles and deserts, urban planning, rollercoaster
rides, night time zombies and daily survival” says Mr Walker. “Our vacation care presents a platform for kids to engage in these conversations with their peers, easing the burden on parents enduring this endless chatter.” Computer Capers provides gentle guidance through building challenges, collaborative activities, social games and group problem solving, all on a safe, private and secured computer server. Aimed at Primary aged school children, the classes are available to any level of technical ability as children are supported to develop their skills within their own Minecraft world, and also have the opportunity to participate in competitions, quests and mini lessons. For more information on Computer Capers and Minecraft School, head over to the Computer Capers Facebook page or email Rob at rob@ computercapers.com.au or ring him on 0421 998 466 or visit the site at www.computercapers. com.au to book your session.

Some ‘Intensive’ local flavour “
We absolutely love to have local people here. And once again it’s another opportunity for them to play with other well-known artists
“
By LIZZIE McLEOD PORT Macquarie’s electronic dance and music festival ‘Summer Intensive’ is only days away. Celebrate the New Year with music from some of Australia’s biggest DJs and electronic dons such as Bombs Away, Sonic Boom, and Lawd. The event will also show off the popular Micky-T, J-Uni, La-Funk, KO-S, and Lil Roy. Port’s very own Korzdahavoc, featuring J Smoove and Manic Soul, will also be performing. “We have heaps of local content,” said Lisa Willows from RAWR Music PR. “We’ve got Korzdahavoc who are doing really well in Port Macquarie and have a really strong fan base here. We absolutely love to have local people here. And once again it’s another opportunity for them to play with other well-known artists. The event will be a unique and exciting experience, added Lisa. “Because it’s based around DJs and hip hop artists and there are other promoters around this area that are all doing rock, alternative rock and mainstream, so we are doing something a bit different.” The lineup for the event includes party bad boys Bombs Away, who have won ARIA awards and have platinum releases to their name. “Bombs away are ARIA award winning artists who have sold multi platinum albums so we are really excited to bring them here.” Bombs Away have also held down five concurrent Top 10 tracks on the ARIA, Billboard, iTunes, and Beatport charts simultaneously. The event has attracted plenty of interest.

“People are coming from as far as Newcastle and Sydney and we have actually targeted the event to 18s to 30 year olds. But when I look at all the likers on the facebook page, it is definitely extending past that. “It is really open to anyone. It’s going to be a really good vibe, really different. The Bombs Away guys wet people, so we are warning people to be prepared to be sprayed with stuff and have a bit of fun.” Summer Intensive will not only be bringing music and fun to the people of Port, but it will also be raising money for a young boy living in Port Macquarie. “We are also raising money for one of the promoters’ nephew - Xavier Dunn,” said Ms Willows. “He has had a brain tumor and has just had most of it removed but there has been some damage during the operation so we will be taking collections and donations during the night to help him and his family. The bands have come here for a really good price as well to help that. “He has been well supported in Port Macquarie but we just wanted to do a bit more for the family.” Summer Intensive will be held at the Port Macquarie Hotel on Saturday, January 9 from 9pm until 2am. Tickets are available from http://tickets. oztix.com.au/?Event=57959 and also on the night. Keep up to date at www. facebook.com/Summer-Intensive1673025496270043/?fref=ts
