Art gets new heart By CHRISTINA PARKIN

OFTEN regarded as the ‘Bello’ of the Hastings, Wauchope Arts Council has developed an enviable reputation for attracting quality cultural and music activities to its quaint hall in Oxley Lane. Now what was once a wasted space in the carpark adjacent to Bain Park has been converted to an attractive outdoor ‘meeting place’, with its awning and beautifully decorated with mosaics. Port Macquarie Hastings Councillor, Ms Lisa Intemann, who was invited to open the meeting place described the project as a perfect example of collaboration. “In an ever-changing world and future, it is wonderful to know you can rely on community to cooperate on a goal,” said Cr Intemann. “We now have a ‘west of the highway’ alternative to the Glasshouse to have intimate performances, to be inspired, to have good company, to drink good coffee and have good food here. “This is a really splendid part of the community for those who want something a little bit different to the large auditorium performances, with wonderful artistic performances gathered up by Krissa Wilkinson and to all the committee members - you are an inspiration.” The project started with the local community attending a ‘placemaking’ street party in July 2014 which discussed the concepts and ideas FRONT PAGE ADbenefit to the site. they felt would be of the most

Being a native, macadamia trees are easy to grow in this climate ... they don’t get much fungus or pests, but trees take about 15 years to bear nuts

Perfect place for nutty idea

Macadamia nuts are loaded into a truck at Tallowood Grove to take to the processors.

By SUE PATERICK A GOOD exchange rate and trade agreements with several Asian countries has seen the market for macadamia nuts increase in recent years, giving Australian growers a good return for their produce. These native nuts not only taste amazing, they are packed full of good fats and antioxidants, and lower bad cholesterol, raise good cholesterol and are good for the heart Asians know nuts are vital to maintain a healthy, balanced and nutritious diet and eat them as part of their staple diet, yet they are only just discovering macadamias. According to horticulturalist, Andrew Seccombe, the Asian market is a bottomless pit. Japan is a well-established market because of its close connection to the Hawaiian macadamia industry, but to the rest of Asia these creamy nuts are a delicacy. “China is planting their own trees and will probably be the world’s biggest producer but they are the biggest producers of walnuts and are still importing them,” Andrew said. “So I think the market will get better over the next five years, especially in South Korea, China and India.” He explained that macadamia nut trees are native to a very small part of the world that stretches along the coast from the Richmond River region around Lismore to Bundaberg

Thriving plantation Tallowood Grove in Queensland. To bear fruit macadamias need the right soil, good rainfall and a sub-tropical climate, and the Mid North Coast of NSW offers these perfect conditions. According to the Australian Macadamia Society, macadamias first evolved on the north east coast about 60,000 years ago. A Coffs Harbour local, Andrew and his wife, Kerrie, moved to Yarrahapinni in the Macleay Valley in 1981 for a slower pace of life in nature’s wonderland. They started the Stuarts Point Nursery, selling macadamia trees as their main line. In 1989 they decided to produce macadamia nuts commercially, after hearing an ABC radio

program that called for more growers. “Being a native, macadamia trees are easy to grow in this climate,” he said. “And don’t get much fungus or pests, but trees take about 15 years to establish and bear nuts.” So they planted 18,500 trees on about 80 hectares of rich soil at nearby Donnellyville and called their farm Tallowood Grove. They send their nuts to a large Australian processor, who also does the marketing. Australians eat about 35 per cent of the national macadamia crop with the rest being sold globally. “It is an unfulfilled market,” Andrew said. “Macadamia nuts are easy to handle and don’t deteriorate easily, so the more you grow the better.” And with the advent of climate change, Andrew sees the Mid North Coast becoming an important macadamia growing region. These days Andrew and Kerrie are taking it easy and have handed over the management of Tallowood Grove to their son, Noah and his wife Hannah, who also live on the farm with their children. “He has been going really, really well,” Andrew said, pride evident in his voice. In his spare time Andrew, with Kerrie’s full support, built a 13.1-metre steel yacht, called Solitary Light, and this ocean and nature loving couple set sail for adventure whenever the mood takes them.

Wauchope has new art heart

From Page 1 In November, a successful application to the Port Macquarie Hastings Council resulted in the approval of the development application and a grant of $10,000, augmented by a bequest from the defunct Camden Haven Music Society. Acknowledgement was also made of the numerous contributions by local trades and businesses: Andy Jung’s concreting services and that of Wauchope TAFE and Ian Chegwidden’s Certificate II in Construction class, who worked on constructing the framework for the awning; Jim Tredinnick who donated and painted all the timbers; Bennetts’ Steel; bricklaying by Noel and Deakin Norris; roofing by Mark Thompson; plans by Trish Crick. A ‘six bricks’ campaign that called out to the community to donate any left-over bricks to make the brick walls around the perimeter, has now been covered with mosaic tile designs guided by local artists, Steve Killick and Trish Phelps. Krissa Wilkinson, a founding member of the Wauchope Arts Council describes how her long-term dedication had stemmed from a belief in the arts to build community and a sense of belonging. In Melbourne Ms Wilkinson belonged to a group who had been part of a dynamic art scene and it was a ‘sea change’ that brought her to Wauchope. “I’ve always had an absolute love of music, theatre and the visual arts,” said Ms Wilkinson. “When I came here, Wauchope had no galleries, just a club and this building.”

A ‘six bricks’ campaign that called out to the community to donate any left-over bricks to make the brick walls around the perimeter, has now been covered with mosaic tile designs. Her reputation for attracting an incredible variety of acts to perform in the hall has grown enormously. “I used to have to work hard to invite performances, but now performers often put Wauchope on their itineraries – such as the Festival of Small Halls, produced by the organisers of the Woodford Folk Festival,” says Ms Wilkinson. “We now have members from all over the mid north coast and to see this place packed when we have performances is such a joy. “Being creative is imagining another way of living and building community.”

Paragliders need to be regulated THE people with the most knowledge of the activities of the paragliders are the residents living on and around the headland and the walkers on the reserve at Bartlett’s Beach, Bonny Hills. Residents on the headland who have north or east facing windows or balconies, witness incidents and accidents that others don’t see. Most of these occurrences have never been reported to the correct authorities. Even The Australian Transport Safety Bureau admits there is a practice of under-reporting within the

assessment? Paragliders take off metres away from the area most favoured by visitors to the beach. Frequent ‘emergency landings’ are frightening beach-goers. What’s really going on if safety of the public and environment protection is not top of Council’s list of priorities? There are enough witness statements to prove paragliders can’t self-regulate. If eye witness accounts are good enough in court, why aren’t they good enough for Council? Ramise Bonny Hills

around the headland. Around the flight path that paragliders take, two-thirds of the vegetation around the headland has been damaged or destroyed over the last four years. Massive stormwater run-off, extremely high seas and wilful damage has taken its toll on the landscape. Boulders have fallen onto the beach creating turbulence, the topography of the cliff-faces altered by avalanches and a disappearing tree canopy seem to cause a lack of thermal life. Has anyone considered these issues when doing an unbiased risk

paraglider community. Why have council gone into negotiations with the paragliders, when they have not come and spoken to the eye witnesses of the incidents and accidents? Residents have requested a public forum with Council, to no avail. Paragliders club Mid North Coast Fliers (MNCF) have supposedly looked into the complaints and say they have found ‘nothing’. However, they haven’t talked to the witnesses. Wind conditions have been affected by the escalating erosion

Low shot at Rob I JOINED in the democratic process over the last few weeks working on the pre-polling booth, as a scrutineer in some aged care facilities and at the Lions Club Polling Booth on Saturday. On the whole it was an interesting time, but I observed some very ill-mannered folk “shooting the messenger” and was often on the receiving end. Surely we are bigger than this in Port Macquarie? I live in an over 55s retirement

village and the icing on the cake was when I woke up Thursday morning to a flyer in my letterbox attacking the integrity of Rob Oakeshott. Every candidate, not just Rob Oakeshott, receives about $2.60 per vote. The distributors of this nasty little missive identified themselves as being authorized by one N Quigley from Pitt Street Sydney. One has to ask the question – how low can they go? Editorial apology YOUR Local Independent wishes to apologise for an error last week in a Letter to the Editor entitled ‘Roadwork decision fair and overdue’, submitted by Patrick and Kerrie Sheridan. The third paragraph should have read “We understand that the mayor did declare any interest when the works program was considered, however, to delay or reschedule the works ... just because the mayor lives at the end of our laneway, unfairly

penalises all of the residents of both laneways.” Unfortunately, due to a misunderstanding the word ‘not’ was inserted before the phrase ‘declare any interest’ and we apologise to Patrick and Kerrie Sheridan and Mayor, Ms Liz Campbell, for altering the letter. We regret any embarrassment caused by our mistake in an otherwise supportive letter for the decision of council and again reiterate Ms Campbell DID declare an interest in scheduling the works and note the declaration is on public record.

Thumbs Down

Thumbs Up TO Ultra Tune, thanks to Romeo and Connie for your most professional service. We take both our cars there and cannot fault the attention received. Would highly recommend them for all mechanical requirements.

THUMBS

DOWN

TO the heroes that think throwing bottles out of their cars and breaking them all over the footpath on Gordon Street and bus stops is clever. It’s where their families could walk on them and cut their feet. How clever is that?

Thumbs up

Thumbs Down I FOUND it appalling after exiting the community dentist to see a council parking ranger booking cars up and down the street.

Thumbs Up TO the Council for not encouraging caravans and motorhomes to visit Port Macquarie. Having no advertising on the highway and positioning the Tourist Information Centre in the middle of town all help this. I know it sounds selfish but we don’t need any more sea changers moving to Port. The roads and infrastructure just can’t handle it.

I KNEW by early Tuesday that ‘today’ was obviously just going to be one of those days! The beautiful sunset on Monday night was totally deceptive…no ‘shepherds delight’ by Tuesday morning; overcast, raining and cold. Not my idea of fun; just a good day for staying in bed and reading a good book. Unfortunately, Tuesday is deadline day and there is no rest for the wicked so, off to newspaper land we trek. I decided I needed to get breakfast on my way to work and order an egg and bacon muffin, no cheese at the golden arches. I get to the office and answer a series of totally inane phone calls, finally open up my now cold breakfast and… hey presto, I have a sausage and egg muffin!!! At this point I have to say, I hate, with a passion the ‘pre-chewed, regurgitated’ patty that is supposed to be sausage…my stomach hurls and my buttons have been pushed; breakfast is in the bin and we haven’t even got to 9am. We all make mistakes; the thing is…it doesn’t seem to matter if I order for myself or someone else orders for me, if there is going to be a stuff up; nine times out of 10 it will be mine! Plan B is tea and crumpets; the inane phone calls keep coming and by 9.55am I’m thinking a glass of wine is looking…well, absolutely fabulous!!!

TO Hans of Antenna Zone for his prompt service after the storm when our antenna required replacing.

Thumbs Down

Thumbs Up TO Andrew and team at Liberty Lawns and Gardens, for a reasonably priced, quality landscaping job. Also for Andrew’s helpful, pleasant manner keeping me informed of progress and completing the job promptly. Thank you guys.

TO whoever took a black, four footed walking stick from the car park at Winter Garden Nursing Home recently. Please would you return it - no name needed, or ring me using the details on the sticker and I will come and collect it. Please, I need it!

All aboard for adventure By SUE PATERICK IN a large shed on Margaret and Bob Sharland’s Macleay Valley property, a white houseboat sits eagerly awaiting the day its smooth sides and aluminium hull will feel the caress of a cool river somewhere. Christened, Captain ‘n’ Cook, Margaret first wondered who would fulfil each role until she realised the captain has to go down with his ship. This six-metre beauty was a true labour of love that has taken Bob three years to design and build, and all began when his wife suggested they buy a houseboat. “We used to have a fibreglass half-cabin fishing boat and I wished I had a stove and a bed and could just sleep out on the water,” Margaret said. Bob thought it was a great idea until they looked online and couldn’t find anything that was suitable. “So I thought blow it all, I’ll build my own,” he said. And not only did he build the houseboat without any plans, he designed a tough and insular product for the boat’s walls out of foam, marine ply and fibreglass. The hull, once an oyster punt at Fisherman’s Reach at Stuarts Point, is made of aluminium builder’s planks, and the boat has solar power, water tanks and recycled water systems, 20 horsepower motor, a reversing camera and should sleep about six. As a toolmaker, Bob has always built things, including their own gorgeous family home, complete with a playground and a flying fox for the grandchildren. Margaret remembered he once built a fivestar chook pen when they first moved to the Macleay Valley in 1981, while they were living in a caravan in the shed. After travelling around Australia for three

Steel’s Bridge closure PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council will start critical bridge maintenance and repair work on Steel’s Bridge in Wauchope, resulting in its closure for three days. Steel’s Bridge crosses Yippin Creek on Beechwood Road, Wauchope and is located between Waugh Street and Steelsville Road. Works are expected to take three days to complete from 7am on Tuesday, July 12 until 4pm on Thursday, July 14 (weather permitting). Alternative access is via Rosewood Road or Redbank Road. Commuters should allow extra travel time while the detours are in place.

Open day at U3A PORT Macquarie Hastings U3A invites retirees to their Open Day next Tuesday from 10am until 1pm at 2 Lochinvar Place. Visitors can discuss any of the 60-plus interest groups with course conveners, view videos, have a ‘cuppa’ and consider joining this vibrant community of seniors. The University of the Third Age is a voluntary organisation. There are no education entry levels or exams and fees are low. Visit www.pmhu3a. org.au or contact the U3A office at 6584 4192.

$3000 for lucky winner

Margaret and Bob Sharland are ready to begin exploring the region’s rivers and lakes years, this adventurous couple settled in the Macleay because they liked the area and didn’t want to bring their children up in the city. “We love Kempsey because it’s so friendly and is a rural town with rural shops,” Margaret said. “It’s also in a good location halfway between Sydney and Brisbane and a great place to bring up children. “Ours all went to local schools and have done really well.” Bob likes the Macleay Valley’s beautiful beaches, wide river and peaceful bush. “The people are laidback and friendly and just so accepting of each other,” he said.

“We moved here to get away from the family,” Margaret said, laughing. “But they all followed us.” When Captain ‘n’ Cook is launched this summer at Kempsey’s tranquil Riverside Park, it will be an exciting occasion. Not only will it mark the end of three years hard work, it will herald the beginning of a lifetime of family fun and memories. Margaret and Bob want to explore all the rivers and lakes in the region, starting in the mighty Macleay River. “I’d like to go to all the rivers that have wharfs and cafes,” she said, beaming happily.

SETTLEMENT City administration manager Kerrie Workman and Lachlan Dyson draw the name of the winner for the Settlement City Shopping Spree. By spending $137 on her groceries at Woolworths Yvonne Bozanic won $3000 to spend at Settlement City. Not a bad investment for an entry into the competition which ran during June at Settlement City.

Landmark sees light

Success is underpinned by sacrifice By CHRISTINA PARKIN

Members of the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise inspect the completion of Stage 5 of the Tacking Point Lighthouse Project with the restoration of the footings of the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage

Many locals have stopped by ... and commented how this latest stage completed the attraction, linking in with the history of the site

PERCHED on the Tacking Point headland, the blue and whitewashed active lighthouse is an iconic image synonymous with Port Macquarie. The lighthouse is atop the headland, dotted with seats that give a prime site for whalewatching and overlooking the landscaped steps and paths leading around the complex. The adjoining lookout is easily accessed from the loop road containing an island that now reveals the footings and layout of the original lighthouse keeper’s cottage. Since 2010, the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise has taken the headland under its community project wing. Under the direction and dedication of the ‘Mayor of Lighthouse’, Neil Black, the site has had a tremendous facelift. “We set out to restore the pride the locals had for their iconic site,” says Mr Black. “The site had become an eyesore from both graffiti and environmental erosion and from the letters and articles, many in the community had wished that something could be done.” An agreement made with Port Macquarie Hastings Council, Crown Lands and Maritime Services, meant that Sunrise Rotary could drive the project. “The amount of tourist traffic shows how much the situation has been turned around,” said Mr Black. “Locals are proud to take their visitors here, read the signage and enjoy the site.” The restoration and enhancement of the

Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage footings was the last piece of the project with a jungle of weeds hiding truckloads of fill underneath. A 2015 State Government Community Building Partnership Program grant of $25,159 has been used to complete Stage Five of the Tacking Point Lighthouse Project in conjunction with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council that matched the grant funds. Mr Black said that as the site was heritage listed, there were constraints on to what could be built. Boards have been placed on the footings and contrasting gravels have been used to highlight the layout of the rooms and corridors. Signage is being designed with the input of the Port Macquarie Historical Society to describe how life in the cottage would have been. “For example, the site would have had the most picturesque lavatory – it was placed beyond the road opposite the cottage site, on the embankment facing the sea,” remarked Mr Black.

Mr Black said that at the entry point to the roundabout which encircles the Lighthouse Keepers Cottage site, a feature ‘Tacking Point’ sign was being built to incorporate a retaining wall that would offer major erosion control and highlight the significance of the site. “Many locals have stopped by while we have been working and commented how this latest stage completed the attraction, linking in with the history of the site,” says Mr Black. “This project has also been significant in that its achievements have motivated a lot of other service clubs to ‘think big’ and we often have visiting clubs come to see what we have done as an example of a Rotary Community Project. Over 1100 volunteer hours have been spent on the physical work for the project, not including time spent on project planning and management. The five grants (four state and one federal grant) obtained since 2012 total $143,000, but Neil estimates that the value of the works undertaken had the various stages been put out to contract, would be about $350,000. Mr Black said many in council said they could not believe what had been achieved by volunteers and local businesses. “It’s fair to say that Council views the Tacking Point Lighthouse Project as a ‘Placemaking Project’ exemplar,” said Mr Black. “We wouldn’t have achieved what has been done if the club hadn’t got behind it 100%.”

CAREER switchers are those who decide to transition to a new career at a more mature age, after a period of study and training. Determination, personal compromises and financial hardship often underline their efforts. Unlike the young adults entering tertiary education straight from school, they often have children, partners, mortgages and other commitments – all of which need to be delicately balanced. “I was so fortunate to have a very supportive husband and three kids,” says Sarah Elliott (below), who last month was awarded the University of Newcastle Faculty Medal at a ceremony for the School of Nursing and Midwifery Academic Achievement Awards at the Callaghan campus. A faculty medal is awarded to the student in each program who graduates with the highest grade point average across the whole degree program. Sarah completed her studies in nursing at the end of 2015 at the Port Macquarie campus of the University of Newcastle (UoN). “I was really surprised – it is a lovely acknowledgement of all the hard work I have put into my studies,” said Ms Elliott. Dr Lyn Bowen, Lecturer and Site Convenor for the UoN School of Nursing and Midwifery at the Port Macquarie campus, said “Sarah is a high achiever, never accepting second best, hence her outstanding overall performance. “She demonstrated exceptional organisational skills during her study, not only being a fulltime student, but like many of our students has other responsibilities including the parenting of her young children.” Sarah is now completing a Transition to Professional Practice Program at Port Macquarie Base Hospital. This program encourages recent graduates to apply in either February or May for a 12-month program of support and mentoring with two rotations. Sarah has completed her rotation in surgery and is now with the North Coast Cancer Institute Unit.

World mourns loss of great artist By SUE PATERICK IT is not only the Macleay Valley and his family who will mourn the sudden passing in April of talented artist Rex Newell. The world will also miss the internationallyrenowned artist. Private collectors of Newell’s paintings include Prince Phillip, Crown Prince Harald of Norway, the late president of Ireland Dr Patrick Hillery and the late actor John Wayne. Major banks and corporations and the Perth Mint have commissioned Rex’s works and one of his paintings hangs in the bar of the West Kempsey Hotel. Born in Coffs Harbour, Rex grew up at Frederickton near Kempsey. His sister, Helen Kesby, believed her older brother was destined to be an artist. “He began painting at a very early age,” she said. “And sold his first painting when he was 14 years old to the first person who saw it.” At 15, Rex left the Macleay Valley and headed to Sydney to study at the Parramatta Fine Arts Society for three years. From there he spent the next five years studying commercial art and sign writing at Sydney Technical College. Armed with his newfound technical and artistic knowledge, Rex moved back to Kempsey and opened a signwriting business. A big traveller, he journeyed extensively through the outback searching for interesting subjects. “He loved the Australian countryside and its characters,” said Helen. In his younger days Rex spent a lot of time at historic Bellbrook in the Macleay Valley’s lush hinterland. The riverside town’s lovely old-fashioned pub was one of his favourite painting subjects. Helen remembered her older brother as an interesting storyteller who entertained her with hilarious stories. One of her favourite yarns was

Rex Newell’s sister Helen with one of the artist’s works and (inset) the man himself in his younger days

about snakes being let loose in the bar of the Bellbrook Hotel. “It still made him laugh years later,” she said. Rex also travelled overseas and became fascinated with painting the Arizona desert and the early American West. To imbibe the bush, Rex lived in old gold mining towns in Central NSW and opened his first art studio in Mudgee in 1972.

His exhibitions were so successful he moved back to Sydney and drew interest from gallery owners and other buyers. While in Sydney, Rex teamed up with fellow artists Robert Hagan and Ron Van Gennip. Despite loving the colours and characters of the outback and Arizona’s deserts, Rex also enjoyed painting water scenes. He once said to Helen, “If I can’t be near the

ocean, I go all funny.” Brother-in-law, Dick Kesby, remembered Rex spending days on their back verandah just painting. And it is this passion that Rex’s family will remember the most - and his unbelievable talent. He is missed. Rex’s work also appears in four books and several calendars.

Grass-roots activities help secure the future INCREASINGLY, people who come to the college are seeing that sustaining our earth is a responsibility we all share. And it’s also good for jobs and business development. So we have been working towards more sustainable activities in the region for a couple of years. The college was a founding member of the Mid North Coast Living Futures Hub set up in early 2015, an environmental sustainability network including other special focus groups in renewable energy, community gardens, climate change and other interested groups. Now the college education program is gearing up with new courses to provide skills that will lead to work associated with environmental protection, conservation and celebration. If you are interested in horticulture or conservation and land management, there are courses to cover that work. These can also lead to specialising in permaculture or niche agriculture, growing small high value added crops, such as garlic or blueberries. There will be increasing work in environmental tourism in this region and we have courses to skill you up for that sort of vocation. We also work closely with Birpai Local Aboriginal Land Council who are interested in seeing an expansion of Aboriginal cultural tourism and ‘Caring for Country’ in this area. So the college is hoping to run associated courses in those fields very soon. Our biggest challenge is finding enough people to enrol, which gives us enough numbers to justify running a course. So if you are interested, please make contact and we can help you to forge a new green future, with the added benefit of supporting the future of mother earth. Local councillors not afraid to agree THE people have spoken in the Federal election. We’re just not sure yet what they said. The clearest message is that many people wish a pox on both the big houses. And no wonder. Even in their final speeches on Saturday, the main focus of both major leaders was criticism of the other. Why is it that at the state and federal level the strongest appeal to voters is still one of negativity, inspiring fear? Three causes spring to mind: confusion from 10-year budgetary plans in which no one can have confidence; assurances that don’t amount to a hill of beans, and our lack of civics education in schools. Poor fellow, my country. On the other side of the great political divide, what is the state of play in local government? Here in our local area - with one exception being the Drew council, dismissed in 2008 - we have been blessed with a distinct lack of party politics in Council. With local government elections in September, let’s hope we keep it that way. This has been my fourth term on Council, 16 years in total as Councillor, but this approaches the best term I’ve experienced, with nine councillors very willing to develop teamwork and most importantly not afraid to agree! There has been, for the most part, real

INSIDE COUNCIL

determination to examine reasons for disagreement and amend proposed decisions to accommodate objections, aiming for the best community outcome. One reason for good teamwork came early, with the nine newly-elected Councillors meeting right after the 2012 election to nominate goals for the term, and then divide into portfolios. As Chair of the Roads and Infrastructure portfolio, the time has not been easy but definitely extremely satisfying. Roads, water and sewer are vital responsibilities but particularly controversial, especially roads. I don’t expect any council will ever meet all community expectations regarding roads. But I can say with hand on heart, that great strides forward have been made in local roads and infrastructure these past four years. Also of special note is Council reducing its debt by $10 million since 2012 – which is no small feat in the context of debt rising around us.

I HAVE been confused at times between a plebiscite and a referendum. Even my small Macquarie dictionary has difficulties. Under ‘plebiscite’, with several definitions, it includes just one word ‘referendum’. I include plebiscite and referendum this week, even though I have mentioned them previously, because they have been talked about a lot lately. One day, perhaps, the Australian people will be called upon to vote on a question, possibly a plebiscite. Some dictionaries are not as precise in their definitions of ‘plebiscite’ and ‘referendum’ as some people would like. But they do describe a ‘plebeian’ as one of the lower classes and say that some people have ‘plebeian’ taste. And here we thought class had no place in Australian society. Maybe they were foreign dictionaries. Actually, the Collins dictionary had an example that could have been put better – “he had a rather thick, short, plebeian neck”. The Collins dictionary had an example for referendum – “the citizens of Massachusetts voted yes in a referendum to cut property tax”. Now, I ask you – couldn’t they have chosen better examples? Let’s go straight to the definitions, from no less a group than the Australian Electoral Commission.

my

LAURIE BARBER

The commission, talking about a ‘referendum’, says at a referendum the proposed amendment must be approved by a national majority of voters and a majority of voters in a majority of the states – four in Australia. An issue put to the vote which does not affect the constitution is called a ‘plebiscite’ and a ‘plebiscite’ is not defined in the Australian Constitution. A plebiscite can also be referred to as a simple national vote. The government is not bound by a plebiscite as it is by the result of a constitutional referendum. That comes from the Australian Electoral Commission and it has pages of other details which I don’t think would interest you. The word ‘plebiscite’ comes from the Latin ‘plebis citurn’, a law enacted by the plebs or common people of a district. The Penguin Working Words says ‘plebs’ were the common people of ancient Rome, so Mrs Bucket would not qualify. Working Words went on to say it now

MEMBER for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams says NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate the contribution of Aboriginal people and culture to our diverse society. This year’s theme Songlines - The living narrative of our nation - celebrates the cultural beginnings of the Dreamtime that connects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to country. I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to explore and celebrate how, through Songlines, people remain connected to country. The NSW Government has provided funding to 200 Aboriginal Community Organisations to run events this year, almost double provided last year. We are committed to partnering with communities to foster pride in Aboriginal culture and heritage and NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to come together to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Meanwhile, applications are open for a $4.8m fund to bolster local tourism infrastructure projects across NSW. Local and state government entities, Aboriginal Land Councils, non-government organisations and private operators are encouraged to apply for a share of the funds as part of the 201617 Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure program (TDDI). This initiative will help boost the local tourism industry and encourage economic growth. I encourage all NSW tourism operators and organisations to apply. referred to the uneducated masses “or someone coarse or vulgar”. In ancient Rome the original plebiscite was a law enacted by the assembled plebs. The Rigby Joy of Knowledge said a ‘referendum’ was held for the first time in Britain in 1975. My big dictionary records the word ‘plebiscite’ as first used, in print, in 1533, when John Bellenden covering the history of Rome, referred to laws. Then in 1880 James Muirhead said “a lex is a law established by the whole body of the people; a plebiscit (without the e) is one enacted and established by the plebeian members”. Lex had a whole range of meanings, but I think it referred to what was called ‘bossism’. The big dictionary said ‘referendum’ referred mainly to the Swiss constitution and it referred to a question put to the whole body of voters. Incidentally, most books said they preferred ‘referendums’ as the plural. Several words have links with referendum. How about ‘referee’people acting as advisers in royal or papal courts, or anybody who is consulted about some matter. But ‘plebiscite’ has more associated words. The big dictionary under ‘plebeian’ refers to “a proposed change in the constitution” – and I think that is where I came in. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Taylor-made concept wins innovation prize

LEANNE Taylor, the single mum from Lakewood who developed the concept behind the car purchasing system ‘Match My Ride’, has been honoured with the grand prize awarded at the recent Telstra Business Centre Coffs Harbour ‘Digital Innovation Challenge’.

Described as the only start-up conference on the Mid North Coast, an impressive line-up of speakers and pitchers showed the diversity of businesses that were using a digital platform. ‘Match My Ride’ is a platform that connects people who want to buy a car with dealers. Buyers fill out a ‘wish list’ in terms of price point, make, model, kilometres and that information instantly goes to a dealer network. You then wait until the dealer network does all the running around for you and comes back with some options. ‘Start-up Alley’ was a highlight of the conference when it provided new businesses the opportunity to showcase their business plans to attendees and speakers. Pitching live to an audience of more than 80 people and a panel of five industry experts, seven prospective winners battled it out to share in more thanr $150,000 in prizes. Each of the finalists had only five minutes to pitch, followed by five minutes of questioning from the panel of expert judges. As winner of the grand prize, Leanne has won $5000 for business development and $120,000 in Softlayer credits. One of the judges was Brendan Yell from Softlayer, an IBM Company which provides cloud infrastructure as a service from a growing number of data centres and network points around the world. Leanne was thrilled when Brendan commented to her, “I probably listen to about 500 start-up pitches a year and I know straight away and yours is going to work.”

Digital entrepreneur Leanne Taylor has pitched her online business ‘Match My Ride’ to win the grand prize at the recent Digital Innovation Challenge at Coffs Harbour. “I’ll get some ideas how best to spend the money and credits from people who have been there before me,” said Leanne. “I was able to hear so many diverse and interesting ideas - I even got offers of help from other ‘pitchers’. It’s now easier than ever to move up to mum a new Honda. “Simone Eyles, another single who

Gordon leaving RDA to take up leadership role REGIONAL Development Australia Mid North Coast (RDA) has announced that its Chief Executive Officer, Lorraine Gordon is leaving to take on a national role in agriculture. “Lorraine has been a fantastic leader of the organisation over the past two years and she will be missed,” said Adrienne Smith, chair of RDA Mid North Coast. “Her passion for regional development has left an indelible mark. Both the committee and her strong and engaged team will miss her greatly. “Nevertheless, we look forward to maintaining a close relationship as she pursues other opportunities. “In her time as CEO, Lorraine has achieved significant outcomes for the region. These include: making granny flats more affordable; examining the potential for cruise ships stopping in Coffs Harbour; and encouraging business investment in the region by lobbying for strategic infrastructure and policy changes, to name just a few.” Ms Gordon is known to be a particular champion for our agricultural industries. Her passion for agriculture saw RDA launch its ‘Pathways into Agriculture’ project in 2015, which has resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of young people considering a traineeship in agriculture. Ms Gordon leaves RDA to take up a position as leader of a national agricultural program. “I have really enjoyed my role as CEO of RDA Mid North Coast, particularly working with such a competent team,” she said. “I have developed strong relationships with stakeholders and I look forward to continuing my involvement with RDA, and the region, in a different capacity.”

New hub just what the doctor ordered The new Wauchope Good “Shepherd Medical Centre will

have one new doctor and share three other doctors between all the centres in addition to having a dietician and pathology service.

GREAT news for Wauchope – Stage 1 of the Good Shepherd Medical Centre is expected to open in August. Dr Cherif Meena (pictured above) has been directing the expansion of services and centres in our local area, including the training of future GP registrars and overseas trained doctors. Initially opening in Laurieton in 2007, the Good Shepherd Medical Centre incorporated a pathology collection centre and psychologist and in 2013, Dr Meena opened the Port Macquarie Good Shepherd Medical and Dental Centre. The size of the practice in Port Macquarie has since doubled and the number of services increased to incorporate pathology, dentistry, a dietician, a mental health nurse and a remedial massage therapist, along with the recent addition of a pharmacy. Besides the convenience of bulk billing, the

extended hours of the Port Macquarie Centre are appreciated by many patients. Port Macquarie is open five days a week from 9am-10pm and weekend hours are 9am-6pm. Laurieton is open the same hours during the week and Saturdays. Dr Meena became a Fellow of the RACGP and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine in 2006 and has been a lecturer with the University of NSW Rural Clinical School here in Port Macquarie since 2008. Arriving from Egypt in 2000, Dr Meena spent over 10 years working in rural and remote medicine, firstly in Bundaberg, Queensland, and then Port Macquarie for the past 11 years. Time spent with Durri and Werrin Aboriginal Medical Centres, has given Dr Meena a good grounding in health issues experienced by Aboriginal patients. The new Wauchope Good Shepherd Medical Centre will have one new doctor and share three other doctors between all the centres in addition to having a dietician and pathology service. There is capacity to expand in both size and services at the Wauchope site at 153 High Street.

My House MY HOME Households will save $40 on levy

NEW South Wales households and businesses are 12 months away from benefitting from the State Government’s abolition of the Emergency Services Levy (ESL) on insurance policies. From July 1, 2017, the government will switch to a fairer system of using a property-based levy to fund NSW firefighters and the State Emergency Service. NSW is the last mainland state that still funds its emergency services with a tax on household insurance. ESL is also applied to some commercial and motor insurance policies. Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) CEO Rob Whelan said insurers were ready for the transition to the new system.“The ICA has long argued that it is unfair and inequitable to financially penalise those households and business owners who take out insurance to protect their assets,” Mr Whelan said. “The Government estimates that by replacing the ESL with a commensurate property-based levy, most households will be $40 better off a year.”

HIGH cost credit refers to loans offered by fringe lenders, where as well as a high rate of interest, numerous fees are also charged. Many disadvantaged consumers are drawn into high cost loans by the advertising which promotes the loans as being available to those with a bad credit history and also advertises that the credit can be accessed straight away. These high cost loans are promoted as a way of solving consumers´ financial problems, but are more likely to keep consumers in a never ending debt trap. Many people on low incomes or in financial difficulty enter high cost loans because they are not aware of other alternatives. Centrelink provides financial support in addition to regular entitlements, such as a special benefit and crisis payment for people experiencing severe financial hardship (eligibility criteria apply), a pharmaceutical allowance to cover the cost of prescription medicines, rent assistance and telephone allowance. The `No Interest Loans Scheme´ offers loans for essential household goods and medical equipment at no interest. A typical NILS loan is for $600-$1,200 and available for essential household goods such as a washing machine, fridge or medical appliances such as a wheelchair. As loans are repaid over 1218 months, the money is lent out again to other people in the community.

NILS are run by local community groups such as Neighbourhood Centres or charities and lend money to people in their local area only. Credit unions offer loans for as little as $200 with terms starting at 3 months. They assess consumers´ repayment ability and lend to those on welfare benefits. NAB and the Good Shepherd Microfinance offer consumers a safe credit alternative - the StepUP loan, which has a fixed low interest rate and no fees and charges. You can borrow from $800-$3000 to purchase items such as second-hand cars, household items, computers, vocational education and training medical expenses. StepUP loans are specifically for people who hold a current Centrelink Health Care Card, Pension Card or receive Family Tax Benefit A and have lived at their current address for more than three months. The Salvation Army is one of the largest providers of material aid in Australia, through more than 260 community services centres nationwide. In just a matter of days a kitchen can go from the drab, dated look on the right, to a sparkling refreshed offering on the left through paint and resurfacing. With the addition of new glass in cupboard doors, homeowners can get the look of a new kitchen without the expense.

New surfaces are real estate ‘gold’ IN February this year North Coast Resurfacing along with Resurfacing Australia appeared on Selling Houses Australia on the Lifestyle Channel. We were proud to assist a couple that were having trouble selling their home in its current state get a fresh ‘new look’ kitchen. Budget and logistic restraints meant they were unable to afford or organise a new kitchen. Starting with the cupboards, we resurfaced the dark with orange undertone kitchen cupboards to fresh inviting white. The cream dated splash back tiles were also brightened with a resurfaced white gloss and the benchtop was renewed with a ‘Desert Stone’ look. The whole kitchen resurfacing makeover was completed in just under three days. Brightening up the kitchen made the whole area inviting again and the host of the show

called the resurfacing ‘real estate gold’ as it had dramatically transformed the entire kitchen from drab and dated to fresh and modern. When selling your home, look at your kitchen and bathroom to see how improving these can increase your chances of getting the sale over the line and at a price your happy with. Many property owners have already benefited from the dramatic changes resurfacing has produced and for a lot less time, money and bother than a slow, messy renovation. Just as seen on Selling Houses Australia the changes to these rooms can make all the difference. If you have a dated kitchen, resurfacing can bring in a fresh modern look. Transforming old to new in just a few days. For more information visit www. northhcoastresurfacing.com.au or contact Craig from North Coast Resurfacing on 0430 649 124.

Paint yourself out of a tired, dated corner

UPDATING and freshening up your rental property will attract quality tenants. Research has identified one of the most important factors impacting a tenant’s decision to lease a property is the appearance of the kitchen and bathrooms. Updating these rooms can significantly improve the rentability of the property. It’s easy to overspend on a kitchen or bathroom renovation and you might not expect to get that money back

when you sell. Resurfacing offers an opportunity to update without the expensive price tag. Giving these areas a repaint, update of accessories and handles can substantially improve the appearance without budget blowouts or extend the time the property is unavailable to rent due to renovations. Property owners benefit from dramatic changes for a lot less time, money and bother.

Thinking about running for Council? NSW Local Government elections will occur on September 10 and Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is conducting a series of Councillor Candidate Information Sessions. The sessions will provide an opportunity for potential candidates to familiarise themselves with important information about their role and obligations in the lead-up to the elections. Sessions will occur in Port Macquarie, Wauchope and North Haven and are open to potential candidates and their official agents. The workshops will introduce participants to the role of a Councillor, discuss the interaction between Councillors and staff, deal with how a council interacts with other arms of government and provide valuable information relating to becoming a candidate. Sessions will be held as follows: > Monday 11 July: 5pm-9pm Port Macquarie-Hastings Council: Cnr Lord and Burrawan Streets, Port Macquarie > Tuesday 12 July: 5pm-9pm Wauchope Senior Citizens Hall: 47-51 High Street, Wauchope > Wednesday 13 July: 5pm-9pm North Haven Community Hall: Ocean Drive, North Haven

He mixes in a blend of original songs and classic rock/pop to bring the ultimate rugby league musical. There will be more songs, more controversies, more villains, and more off-field drama than any other of Carnahan’s performances. “I don’t write it, I don’t need to make the stuff up,” he said. “Whatever happens in rugby league on the field and off the field, I put into song.” The musical is not just for the rugby league fanatics either. “It’s more important to turn up with a sense of humour than it is to turn up with a great knowledge of rugby league,” Carnahan said. Carnahan became widely known for his State of Origin song ‘That’s In Queensland’. He has also written many songs for ABC Grandstand, Triple M’s Grill Team, Fox Sports, The Footy Show and many more. He has also performed at the Sydney Comedy Festival, Sydney Fringe Festival and is now taking the 2016 version of the show on the road from Perth to Auckland, from Port Moresby to Melbourne. “It is a unique kind of a show,” said Carnahan. “I tend to write the original songs about big issues in rugby league, or specific

heroes. There are a lot of parodies.” Carnahan keeps the show up to date and is constantly finding new material to add. “The show updates every week,” said Carnahan. “A lot of it’s off field stuff too. It’s constantly evolving and updating. “At last year’s show, the big number was the Todd Carney song. And I was thinking at the start of this year how I’m going to top that and that I need to get a new song. And then that very night the story broke about Mitchell Pearce and the poodle … I don’t need to make stuff up, it literally just comes to me.” See Carnahan’s Rugby League The Musical at the Glasshouse Port Macquarie on Wednesday, August 3 at 8pm. Michelle Ingram on Idle Rich during the NSW Instructors Clinic at Wilson River Pony Club THE local pony club where the youngsters get to know all there is about caring for and riding their horses, is an integral part of any rural community. In the Hastings, the Wilson River Pony Club is a smaller club specialising in supporting and training intermediate to more experienced riders, while the Telegraph Point club is a great club for learners to get their start. “The Wilson River Pony Club has always been a small club, even way back to 1973 when it began,” explained Neena Wilkinson. Recently, the members of Wilson River Pony Club (situated at the Rollands Plains Showground) hosted the State NSW Instructors Clinic. About 60 Pony Club volunteers from across the Pony Club Zone, from Lismore to Forster, attended a full weekend of tuition by the NSW Pony Club Instructor, Ms Jane Frankum. This instructor’s clinic is required for all zone volunteers to teach their Pony Club members the sport of horse riding in a safe environment.

Brighter future for five venues SPORTING clubs and sports field users are now benefitting from new and upgraded lighting, recently installed at five popular sporting precincts across the Port MacquarieHastings. The Vince Inmon Sporting Complex in Laurieton, Lake Cathie Sporting Complex, Stuart Park, Woods Street Sports Fields and Findlay Park in Port Macquarie all received lighting upgrades thanks to $600,000 in funding from Port Macquarie-Hastings Council. This funding has been allocated to deliver greater sustainability, reduce maintenance costs and increase the lit space available at some of our most popular sporting facilities. The entire Port Macquarie-Hastings sporting community will benefit and enjoy greater flexibility in scheduling sporting activities. “We are an extremely active community with more than 9000 locals registered and actively participating in sporting activities across our region, and we need to keep pace with this growing demand,” said Mayor Peter Besseling. “These improvements have increased the number of lit playing fields across the Local Government Area and also improved the lighting standard from ‘training’ to ‘competition’ on a number of the fields.” “Council has an ongoing commitment to providing our community with a range of facilities to encourage healthy and active lifestyles, and will invest approximately $5.6 million into the maintenance and upgrade of playgrounds, sports fields and open recreation space during the 2016/17 financial year,” concluded Cr Besseling. To find out about the sport fields across the Port Macquarie-Hastings visit pmhc.nsw.gov. au/sportsfields. Division 3: Pat McKeown; Division 4-2nd shot: June Williams. Tipsters take a battering WOW! That hurt. Just four from eight if you followed Your Local Independent’s tips last round. It was one of those weekends when ‘if it could go wrong, it did’. As we spoke about in the preview, the Broncos are really under the Origin pump and Melbourne clinically exposed that. Fortunately for Brisbane they have the bye in this weekend’s Origin depleted round. However even post-Origin there will be some mental doubts in the Brisbane camp. Last round could almost be summarised by Newcastle’s performance. They nearly caused the upset of the season against the Raiders. You have to feel sorry for their supporters. On the back of a woeful season, the Knights were up 220, only to be denied as the Raiders stormed home. There was good news for Manly and Wests supporters as their sides showed they still have some life left in their seasons. However Titans and Dragons tipsters will have been deflated by their results. Origin! Interesting scenario here for tipsters. It is hard to tip against the Maroons, given this year’s results and their passion for this annual slugfest, but as you will read below, Origin 3 promises something different. OK, let’s get our tipping hats on and hit back! Eels v Roosters ( Friday, July 8, 7.50pm, Pirtek Stadium, Parramatta): The Eels just can’t take a trick. A season that promised so much, now is going from bad to worse because of off-field dramas. The salary cap debacle was the main killer, but now the Radradra continuing soap opera drama is just what they do not need. The Roosters went down fighting against the Bulldogs last weekend and you can expect another enthusiastic performance from them.

● Your Local Independent tips: Roosters Bulldogs v Tigers (Saturday, July 9, 7.30pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Tedesco’s long-awaited elevation to the Blues is great news for him, but not so for the Wests Tigers. The Tigers are on 16 points, just a win out of the eight. But it is a congested ladder down that end. A win or a loss now means plenty. The Tigers’ limited hopes of beating the Dogs, went ‘east’ with Tedesco’s selection – as well as a couple of other ‘handy players (Woods, Farah). ● Your Local Independent tips: Bulldogs Panthers v Sharks (Sunday, July 10, 4pm, Pepper Stadium, Penrith): This is shaping up as a real test of depth for the Cronulla Sharks. Missing on Origin duty are Gallen, Graham, Bird, Maloney and Fifita, while the Panthers will be without just Josh Mansour. The Sharks have gathered a lot of positive momentum this season and have been crashing through all barriers. Their

all again in Origin 3. However, mentally they have moved on from Origin. They are now focused on ensuring their team is in the spotlight for the ‘main dance’ this NRL season, which is on Grand Final weekend. The Blues meanwhile are full of unfinished business. They really need Paul Gallen momentum running into Origin next year. Maybe, just maybe, they can bring a little more humility to ANZ, treat the Maroons with the respect they deserve, and they will get the result they are so desperate for. ● Your Local Independent tips: NSW

winning culture will have pervaded through the entire squad. However this is just too big an ask. ● Your Local Independent tips: Penrith Raiders v Cowboys (Monday, July 11, 7pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): Similar scenario for the Cowboys. They also have five players on duty for Origin including ‘the Maestro’ Thurston. The Raiders had a wake-up call against the Knights and they know this is a rare opportunity to take the points against a weakened premiership trump card. ● Your Local Independent tips: Raiders NSW v Qld (Wednesday, July 13, 8pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Origin means everything to Queenslanders, especially the 17 involved in this finale for 2016. However those same 17 Queenslanders are also proud of the club colours they wear, especially the Broncos and Cowboys. They know they have done their State proud this year. And, they will physically give their
