A national disgrace But one local is helping to find ‘a cure’

• At least 5% of older people across Australia experience elder abuse. That’s more than 182,000 people.

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

THE abuse of elderly Australians is reaching epidemic proportions and one local is leading the battle to find a ‘cure’. Mid north coast-based Jill McDonnell, is Advocate Education Officer for Senior Rights Service, the organisation which is hosting a major conference in Sydney this month to find ways to put a stop to elder abuse. At least 182,000 older people across Australia experience elder abuse. With the Mid North Coast having one of the older age demographics in the nation the alarm bells are ringing loudly here. “There are many different types of abuse,” said Jill. “The biggest one is financial abuse and then unfortunately there are issues of sexual abuse, there’s social abuse where people are restricted from having friends and going out and are made to stay at home, there’s physical abuse and that’s an area where doctors and the hospital would get involved, and then there’s psychological abuse.” This year will be the fifth National Elder Abuse Conference. The first conference was held in 2012 with just 40 delegates attending. There has been a massive growth with this year’s conference ‘Together Making A Change’ bringing in over 500 delegates. • Continued Page 7

• Women are more likely to be victims of abuse by a staggering 250%. • Two-thirds of elder abuse in Australia is perpetrated by the adult children of the older person.

Wanted: driving mentors Program helping to shape futures By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC LEARNING to drive is a skill that all young people, advantaged or disadvantaged, should have the opportunity to do. The Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre is on the look out for mentors to volunteer their time for the L2P Learner Driving Mentor Program. This program will assist a young person not only with attaining their driver’s license, but also in shaping their future. “It’s not just a driving program, it’s a whole process and a whole life circle,” said Julie Trowbridge, Coordinator of the L2P Learner Driving Mentor Program from the Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre Inc. “We not only match the mentors and learners with their hours and schedules, but also with their personalities and what’s happening in their lives. And the mentors get just as much out of it as the young kids do.” The Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre offers free community programs, information, advocacy, advice and referral on a variety of matters. They assist many disadvantaged groups in the community including families and adolescents.

Some of the people involved in the Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre’s L2P Learner Driving Mentor Program The L2P Learner Driving Mentor Program gives young disadvantaged people the opportunity to get their license. “100% of these learners are disadvantaged kids who don’t have access to a vehicle or a supervising driver,” said Julie. “The kids that are in our program have basically zero opportunity to get their license. The kids that are accepted into our program must come to a compulsory information session and meet the appropriate criteria. They would have no other way. This program intends to see them right through to the end of getting their Ps. We are pretty strict as well with them needing to comply with the guidelines of

the program.” The program has been running for 18 months with a success rate of 50%. The Neighbourhood Centre needs more mentors for the program to continue. “The kids come and go through the program for whatever reason,” Julie said. “We work really hard with the kids that are in the program to get them to the end.” Mentors will attend an information session where they will fill out some forms, give credentials, and get matched to a learner. The mentors will give their time as a mentor/ volunteer to work with their learner to complete the 120 driving hours with them. The driving

hours might be anywhere between 2-5 hours a week, and they will use a designated L2P car, so no car is needed from them. Mentors must have their full license with the RMS and there will be a background police check conducted on each mentor. The L2P Learner Driving Mentor Program information session for mentors will take place on March 1 at the Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre, 4 Dodds St, Port Macquarie at 3pm. Once the mentors have been selected there will be a separate information session for the learner drivers. For more information visit http://www. pmncinfo.org.au

provisional licence. The program is aimed at indigenous youth aged from16 to 25, but exceptions can be made for older people and non-indigenous youth. According to its supervisor, Cheryl Davis, there is a need in the community for this sort of program so young people can gain the confidence to drive on the roads and the confidence to apply for those out-of-town jobs that require a driver’s licence. “The Driving Change Program will also help our youth gain a knowledge of the road rules and road safety, and it will help them build up their driving skills,” Cheryl said. “Getting a licence is hard for some young people in the community because their parents don’t have a car and their aunties and uncles don’t have the time to teach them, so a lot of

youths old enough to get their L Plates don’t because they have to rely on others.” In this day and age most jobs require a driving licence and Cheryl believes not being able to get one impedes a person’s independence. The program is especially important because indigenous people are over-represented in the criminal justice system and unlicenced driving is a common offence in this context. The Department of Justice funds programs like Driving Change to attempt to address this issue. The program is run from the Kempsey Neighbourhood Centre in Kemp Street West Kempsey near the Railway Station. For more information on taking part in the program or becoming a mentor contact Cheryl on 65628300.

Kempsey targets indigenous youngsters with ‘change program’ By SUE PATERICK KEMPSEY’S Indigenous Driving Change Program was established to help local Aboriginal youth obtain a driving licence, but it needs volunteer mentors. Funded by the NSW Department of Justice, it is an indigenous licensing support program that assists participants to obtain their learner’s permit and then their provisional licence. To help get their P plates, participants are assisted to complete the required 120 logbook hours. The Driving Change Program has its own designated vehicle, but is now looking for volunteer mentors to help the participants build up these driving hours. Mentors will need a Working with Children

Supervisor of Kempsey’s Indigenous Driving Change Program, Cheryl Davis check and a driving history report, which can both be obtained through the RTA. Participants can also sit at a computer to do a hazard perception test before getting their Scout Sport Quattro Mobility Scooter $

Infrastructure is lagging LIVING in Lake Cathie has been a pleasure however as the area is growing fast it’s unfortunate that the infrastructure isn’t keeping up. Everyone is aware of the state of the roads throughout the Hastings but not many would be aware that the Lake Cathie/Bonny Hills area is being let down badly with their power supply. Living near the Medical Centre we are close to the electricity sub station. The power has been interrupted on average once a week since Christmas. These power cuts including voltage spikes and surges is costing residents thousands of dollars with ruined large screen TVs, expensive washing machines, PCs etc. I believe Essential Energy has plans to build a new sub station to cope with the growth of this area. It’s typical that they haven’t even started building it yet when there is already hundreds of new homes connected to the grid and hundreds more due to come on line. Here we are paying the highest power prices in the world with a third world power supply. The Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has a lot to answer for as well. While they are happy to collect all the development fees and rates they are sitting on their hands when it comes

to infrastructure. Where is all the water going to come from? How are the sewage treatment works going to cope. It’s as though they don’t really care. Gary Olive Lake Cathie

Ladies, cover up please

I COULDN’T agree more with your article on sexual harassment (YLI 25/1/18)! Maybe the women are sexually harassing men by the way they expose themselves. We are not allowed to advertise cigarettes or alcohol because it may harm someone, but society promotes sexually explicit material of women everywhere. Young boys as young as six are now affected by this. Try reading the junk mail from some of our leading stores, it’s like reading a Playboy magazine! Also the way young girls are dressing in Port Macquarie is very offensive to most people. They are exposing most of their breasts, bottom and midriff. Take a stroll through Port Central or the local beach, where they parade around in just a G String, in the cafe as well. The young girls working in some cafés in Port Macquarie have shorts that short, they’re bottom cheeks are exposed. Name and address supplied

How about real equality! FOR those of you who know me, and or follow my column, you’d know I’m opiniated (understatement of 2018), say what I think, and sugar coating, is just not my thing. To add to that, my patience and tolerance levels for the extraordinary displays of stupidity we are subjected to daily, are at an all-time low, virtually non-existent to be precise! Political correctness has over corrected how we act, think, feel and communicate with each other and I find that tragic. Over-corrected political correctness seems to have annihilated any skerrick of common sense or sense of humour from humanity. It’s just nuts! It’s a struggle to form a full sentence, without self-doubting and checking the filter, for fear of being taken the wrong way, offending someone and being labelled for calling it out. I love a good debate, especially if it includes a bit of sarcastic banter, and I always see and point out the ridiculous, if it’s there. It’s like a flashing neon light. I’m used to the knee-jerk reactions to sharing my thoughts, but, a lot of people choose to keep their mind closed and trap shut because its not worth the backlash from the over corrected PC brigade. Affectionately referred to as ‘sheeple’ in my world. Sheeple: people who follow the mainstream, without thought or question as long as their equilibrium is not upset. Enthusiastically embracing double standards as a lifelong friend. Easily offended during topics of debate and completely delusional about what is going on in the world around them. of synthetic prescription drugs and or alcohol to keep reality in check. God knows, the reality is not pretty! In our world-wide bid to be ‘equal’ - be it marriage equality, financial equality, gender equality, workplace equality or racial equality – and maintain our political correctness, we’ve lost our way. In fact, I think it’s completely bum-about-face, inside out, upside down and back to front. I think we’re looking at achieving equality the wrong way. If we’re going to have to make a new law every time someone wants ‘equality’ in some shape of form – we will never achieve equality. All these laws are doing is creating more unnecessary division – politically, racially, religiously, sexually, globally and tearing our society apart, not protecting our society. What if we just stripped it all right back and revisited a basic set of universal laws for society to adhere to – thou shalt not kill, steal, covet thy neighbours wife etc? Tax the elite, major corporations, churches and notfor-profit organisations, the same as all the small businesses, their owners, employees and welfare recipients and let those taxes trickle down. Then we might start seeing some equality. Just a thought!

SWR history is in your hands By SUE PATERICK FOR residents and visitors to South West Rocks (SWR), the Pilot House and Boatman’s Cottages are as dear to their hearts as this stunning seaside town’s beautiful beaches, Arakoon National Park and relaxed, friendly atmosphere. But unless a new executive committee can be found to run the SWR Maritime Precinct, which restores, maintains and administers these wonderful heritage-listed buildings, their future could be in jeopardy. The buildings house a Maritime Museum, Visitor Information Centre, a Community Information and Help Centre, and a senior men’s group called the Toy Boys. According to the Maritime Precinct Committee, new members are needed, especially those willing to take on an executive role, to keep the organisation alive and ensure that these historic community buildings survive and stay under local control. Committee President and winner of the 2018 Kempsey Australia Day Award for Volunteer of the Year, Richard Collins, explained that after 12 years the current executive members are about to resign in March due to family and health reasons. “Our time with the SWR Maritime Precinct has been absolutely terrific and we couldn’t have lasted this long if we hadn’t worked well together,” he said. Vice President Ian McCarthy wholeheartedly agreed. “We all worked together for the benefit of the organisation and we will do an orderly changeover to help the new committee settle in,” Ian added. Established in 2006 to ensure the Pilot House and Boatman’s Cottages were retained for community use, the SWR Maritime Precinct

President of the South West Rocks Maritime Precinct, Richard Collins, and Vice President, Ian McCarthy, have been restoring, maintaining and managing the Pilot House and Boatman’s Cottages for 12 years along with a lot of other hardworking people, but they are about to retire members want what they have achieved to count. “So we need new blood to inject a renewed community interest in these fascinating buildings for decades to come,” Richard said. Back in 1893 when ships laden with goods cruised Australia’s east coast and Kempsey was a growing river town, a pilot and four boatmen were needed to assist these vessels navigate across the Macleay River’s bar. In those days the river mouth was at Grassy Head, but when a disastrous flood carved out a new river entrance in June 1893 the pilot station needed to be relocated.

By May 1902 the pilot station was built on its current site and ready for occupation. Five cottages, a signal house and a flagstaff, two boatsheds and a footbridge over Back Creek were also built. Overlooking smiling sandy bays, glittering blue water and emerald mountains, the cottages were used as accommodation for the pilot, boatmen and their families. In the 1930s one of the boatman’s cottages became a police station and in the early 1960s cottage number four was removed and replaced with a block of holiday units.

Although boatmen became progressively redundant in the 1950s, the NSW Maritime Services Board provided pilot services for shipping at the site until 1991. The last boatman left in 1992 when the Trial Bay Oil Storage Facility was closed. The cottage was then rented out to Maritime Services’ employees as holiday accommodation. Around that time Kempsey Shire Council (KSC) listed the Pilot Station complex as items of Environmental Heritage, and obtained a $24,000 grant for restoration of Boatman’s Cottage number one. After a voluntary team of some 30 local SWR residents pulled together to achieve a magnificent restoration, the Governor of NSW, Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair AC, officially opened the site in 1993. Restoration work continued until 1996. In that same year ownership and control of the Pilot’s House and Boatman’s Cottage number two was handed to the Department of Lands and a lease granted to KSC. The SWR Maritime Precinct took over that lease and are now calling for help to keep going. Richard explained that the Department of Lands was not in a position to manage the buildings. “So we don’t know what will happen if there is no SWR Maritime Precinct committee,” he said. “My guess is the Pilot’s House and Boatman’s Cottages will sit there and rot, so if you want to save these historic buildings and this committee then please attend our AGM on Friday, March 9.” The SWR Maritime Precinct committee’s AGM will be held at the School of Arts lower hall in Gregory Street SWR from 9.30am.

AUSTRALIAN THERAPEUTIC GOODS LAW APPLIES TO FLUORIDATED WATER Citizens Against Fluoridation Inc. (CAF Inc.) is fortunate to have the services of Michael Lusk, an Australian Lawyer additionally qualified in science as its legal advisor on a pro bono basis. Michael resides in Switzerland and currently is visiting family in Port Macquarie. Mayor Peta Pinson invited CAF Inc. to address councillors on “Discontinuation of Water Fluoridation” in relation to the Port Macquarie-Hastings water supply. Michael carefully investigated the impact of the Commonwealth Therapeutic Goods Act upon fluoridation of public water supplies. The statutory definition of “therapeutic goods” broadly encompasses goods represented to be for therapeutic use, including for preventing an ailment, defect or injury. The Therapeutic Goods Act establishes a mandatory regulatory framework, including approval and licencing provisions, governing manufacture and supply of therapeutic goods in Australia. Fluoridated water is not approved goods and the council does not hold a manufacturing licence. Medical evidence shows that fluoride is toxic to the kidneys and the nervous system. It is estimated

that 10% of the Australian population shows symptoms of fluoride poisoning. Dr. Geoff Pain was invited by CAF Inc. in November 2017 to explain in detail the toxic and bioaccumulative effects of fluoride… to those with eyes to see and ears to hear. President Paul is attending tables in Port Central (Prouds Jewellers) today February 8 from 9am to 2pm and again in Port Central (Horton Street) on Monday, February 19 from 9am to 2pm. A petition to the NSW Legislative Assembly for repeal of its water fluoridation legislation and a separate petition to the House of Representatives will be available for signature. Many hundreds of people across Australia have already signed these petitions. They are available for signature at some Port Macquarie health food stores, naturopaths, osteopaths and chiropractors and also at the Office of Your Local Independent newspaper. Paul personally thanks CAF Inc. members and supporters for their hard work over many Michael Lusk, Paul Jones Pres. And Dr John Lusk leaving Port Macquarie-Hastings years towards remedying the gross injustice of Council after a meeting on January 31. this form of mandatory mass medication.

This path is now complete! Hastings School community gets the job done

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC THE Hastings Public School’s ‘Path to Completion Project’ … is complete. The school’s grounds are looking safer and more accessible than ever thanks to the hard work of local volunteers and sponsors. “All the comments I have received about the new pathway have been very positive,” said Adam Rumble, Path To Completion Project Coordinator. “There were several parents who approached me on the first day of school indicating that it looks fantastic and they are relieved that they no longer have to walk along a slippery dirt track anymore.” The Path to Completion Project started a couple of years ago when the Hastings Public School P&C noticed that parents were really having to negotiate a rather challenging rainforest path to get in and out of the school. The school now sports a new flat, level and safe path that guides children and their parents safely to and from school. The P&C also took on the project of a sensory garden, which involves an interactive play area and a space to relax for the students. “We completed all of the tasks that we set out to do,” said Mr Rumble. “There is however one section of the path right at the start which is to be made from concrete, so we are waiting for a concrete contractor to complete the last section before opening the path.” A massive working bee took place in January, which consisted of mulching, weeding, and general labour. Luckily for Adam

Above: The completed path and just some of the many volunteers and the P&C, there were a lot of communityminded people on board for the project. “The callout for volunteers to assist with the school working bee resulted in more than 50 volunteers attending over the three-day period and we collectively achieved some astonishing results,” Mr Rumble explained. “Firstly, the 50 metre long path was constructed on time and on budget. Secondly, more than an acre of gardens and pathways were weeded, trimmed, swept and tidied up with the resultant mountain of green waste over-

filling a 15-cubic metre Skip bin. And thirdly, the volunteers then turned their attention to distributing 10 cubic metres of mulch in a flurry of shovels and wheelbarrows to the now weedfree school gardens.” Saturday’s volunteers were rewarded with a well-earned sausage sizzle and drinks donated by the school P&C President Amy Vallentine, for their outstanding efforts. The Hastings Public School P&C couldn’t have achieved the work without the help of their generous sponsors. A successful application

for a Club Grant with the Port City Bowling Club was announced in December of last year, which then provided the necessary funding to purchase the construction materials required to make the Path To Completion project a reality. So, a big ‘thankyou’ from the Hastings Public School P&C to: The directors, staff and members of the Port City Bowling Club and the NSW Club Grants program, for their valued support on this project; Bunnings Port Macquarie for a reduction in the material costs; Craig Thomas of Native Impressions Landscaping for digging close to 100 post holes with his excavator; Remondis for donating the large skip bin; Woodvale Tree Services for donating the mulch; Crescent Head School for donating the plants; Your Local Independent for raising awareness and covering the progress of the project; and the staff of Greenplace who worked tirelessly all weekend and provided guidance to the many volunteers throughout the project.

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson With ‘20-greateen’ now in full swing and the kids back at school we can all get back to our regular routines. Perhaps it’s not the most exciting thing that Council does, however one of the essential services that we provide is a range of waste services, including the regular pick-up and disposal of waste from our homes’ green, yellow and red bins. You may have heard our tagline green and yellow first, so your red bin won’t burst. It’s more than just a slogan it’s a reminder to us all that if we think about what can go in our green organics bin and yellow

recycling bin before using the red bin, we’re going a long way to managing our waste responsibly.

pmhc.nsw.gov.au weekly red bin pickup for an additional fee.

We really should be thinking of our red bin as ‘the bin of last resort’.

If you’re not sure when your bin pickup day is, the easiest way to find out is to download our free wasteinfo app or check our website.

Making sure that we put the right items into our bins is extremely important if we are to minimise the amount of waste that goes into landfill, reduce community costs and ensure we look after our beautiful environment.

If you prefer to have something handy to remind you, we have a fridge magnet calendar that you can pick up from our customer service centres, just ask next time you visit us and our friendly staff will make sure you have the right days.

Bin night is important to us all, and Council picks up our green bins every week, and our yellow and red bins every second week on an alternate week basis. If this does not suit you, or you are generating a lot of waste you can always call us to have a regular

I hope this information has been helpful, and remember green and yellow first, so your red bin won’t burst. Until next week, Peta.

New Wauchope pontoon BOATIES in Wauchope will soon benefit from the installation of a new floating pontoon, to be located at the existing Rocks Ferry Reserve boat ramp, with construction commencing on Monday, February 12. The new pontoon will make boat launching more enjoyable, reduce waiting times, improve safety, and make access to the river easier. Construction of the pontoon is expected to take less than 2 weeks, weather permitting. During this time the boat ramp will be mostly closed, however, during the course of the project it may be re-opened for limited periods where possible. The $120,000 upgrade is the result of Council’s continued focus on improving recreational boating facilities across the region, with Council contributing $40,000 towards the project and funding of $80,000 being provided under the NSW Government’s Boating Now Program. Council Group Manager Liam Bulley said the improvements were prioritised as part of Council’s Recreation Action Plan.

Conference looks to end elder abuse • From Page 1 “We want to ensure that recent public inquiries over the past 18 months such as the Australian Law Reform Commission Inquiry into Elder Abuse and the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into Elder Abuse as well as other recent aged-care inquiries are actioned,” said Russell Westacott, CEO of Seniors Rights Service. “We want delegates to come together and advocate for change.” The stigma and shame around elder abuse still remains, making it a silent epidemic in society. “Some elderly won’t contact anyone because they don’t know who to contact and they might be embarrassed,” said Jill. “If it’s a family member using their credit card or accessing their bank account or whatever they are doing, it’s often uncomfortable for them and they just don’t know who can help them.” In 2017, a number of high profile stories of neglect and abuse among aged-care services led to two major inquiries on aged-care service delivery. Studies from 2017 also show that two-thirds of elder abuse in Australia is perpetrated by the adult children of the older person. Jill says that help is just a phone call away. “We try to tell people to talk to the Elder Abuse Helpline, where trained operators will listen to the person to find out what their situation is, and they will refer the person to

wherever they might need the help,” explained Jill. “So if it’s financial abuse, they will refer the person to Legal Advice, and if it’s physical, often they will refer the elderly to the Age Care Assessment Team or the hospital. “People who I work with include the Community Legal Centre, Legal Aid, the Public Trustee and our local bank branches. I’m also on the committee with Dementia Australia, and they have a carers group where they talk about issues of financial abuse in particular.” The Australian Banking Association is hosting a collaborative sector-wide discussion at the conference focusing on financial abuse of older people and what reforms are required in the industry to prevent this type of abuse of older Australians. The event also includes professionals from multi-disciplinary backgrounds from across Australia who will participate in the interactive conference that will develop a final conference official statement. The National Elder Abuse Conference will be held on February 19 and 20 at the Sofitel Hotel Wentworth, Sydney. For more details about the conference visit togethermakingchange.org.au

These grants “deliver funding to local grassroots environmental projects

ENVIRONMENT Restoration and Rehabilitation Grants Now Open: Community groups and local councils are being encouraged to apply for the NSW Government’s 2018 Restoration and Rehabilitation Grant Program. These grants deliver funding to local grassroots environmental projects that restore, protect and enhance a variety of NSW environments. Community groups, not-for-profit and government entities from across the state are encouraged to apply for a grant between $5,000 and $100,000. The grant program aims to protect and restore ecosystems and care for the habitats of rare and endangered plants and animals. The program has been running for over 20 years and is one of the longest running in Australia. It has helped landholders, local councils,

are now eligible for free flu jabs this year. The $3.5million influenza vaccination program offered by the NSW Government follows last year’s severe flu season. Last year our community, like many in NSW, was hit hard by the flu season. So this announcement means more than 400,000 children across the State are eligible to receive better protection not only for them, but also for their families and the wider community. We all know how horrendous the flu can

be and this is especially hard on the smallest members of our families. Little kids are also most likely to spread the flu so a free flu jab will not only keep them safe, but will protect others they come into contact with. NSW childhood vaccination rates had increased by 6.3 per cent since 2010, to 93.9 per cent in 2017. Children who have never had a flu vaccination will need two doses, one month apart. The vaccine will cover four strains of influenza virus, two A strains and two B strains, likely to be circulating this winter. Last year there were more than 12,000 confirmed cases of influenza in children under five, with many more likely to not to have been tested. For more information, see www.health. nsw.gov.au/immunisation

The birth of ‘Teddy’ TEDDY bears were once called Roosevelt bears. I walked past a shop window one day and I remarked “they aren’t teddy bears” and the person I was walking with (don’t say wife unless you want to start an argument) said something like “oh yes they are – the sign says they are”. We kept on walking. But I knew they weren’t teddy bears. It was just that, coward that I am, I didn’t want to start an argument in the street. The name teddy bears originated in the United States, as you ascertained by reading the first paragraph, The bears were named after Theodore Roosevelt, who became a United States president. In the book The Inaugural Addresses of the Presidents (a book I bought in Florida) he said “much has been given us”. Some said he was given a bear to kill, but he couldn’t do it. Others said an injured bear was let loose in his presence, but he still couldn’t kill it. I wasn‘t there at the time, so go with the story that suits you best. Apparently, President Roosevelt went to Mississippi at the invitation of the Mississippi Governor, Andrew Longino, to settle some dispute between that state and Louisiana. This is where the story becomes clouded. Roosevelt was a keen hunter, but he couldn’t find a bear to kill. One story is that in his absence somebody found a sick bear and bound it to a tree expecting Roosevelt would shoot the bear. Another story says they found a sick bear that dogs had attacked and invited him to kill it. A third story says they released a bear cub so Roosevelt would find the bear and shoot it. Whatever story is correct, Roosevelt couldn’t shoot the bear, saying that would be unsportsmanlike. This all took place near a town called Onward, in 1902. Another person killed the bear with a knife after Roosevelt had left. But the story surrounding Roosevelt spread.

my

LAURIE BARBER

The Washington Post on November 16, 1902, published a cartoon of Roosevelt looking the other way while a person holds the bear. The bear was a cub. The cartoon was drawn by Clifford Berryman. The cartoon was headlined Drawing the Line in Mississippi. It was also seen as a criticism of lynching in the south. Other cartoons depicted something similar and over time a link developed between Theodore Roosevelt and bears. The New York Times of January 7, 1906, published the story of two bears, nicknamed Teddy B and Teddy G, that by this time were known as the Roosevelt Bears. They were presented to the Bronx Zoo. Then a New York candy operator, Morris Michtom, put in the window two stuffed bears his wife had made and he asked Roosevelt for permission to call his bears “Teddy’s bears”. Then, according to the Roosevelt Association, a German company started making stuffed bears, called Roosevelt bears, and the idea worked its way back to the USA, where they were called Steiff bears. Eventually they become known throughout the world as teddy bears. My big dictionary American Stationer of September 22, 1906, says: “Probably no novelty of recent years has been so popular as the Teddy Bears”. An original Michtom teddy bear is on display at the National Museum of American History. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Earth moves for the MNC By SUE PATERICK

Help beat graffiti THE Port Macquarie-Hastings community is being encouraged to join the fight against illegal graffiti by keeping an eye out and reporting incidents of tagging across our region. Graffiti vandalism currently costs our community around $94,000 each year. This is money which could be invested into roads, sporting facilities, parks and other community facilities. Council Group Manager, Lucilla Marshall said Council’s Graffiti Blaster volunteers have been increasing their efforts to keep up with the increase in graffiti tagging across our region. “Our Graffiti Blaster volunteers are removing around 200 tags per month from local sporting facilities, beaches and parks, community halls as well as street signs, footpaths and even our libraries. This is an increase of 50% over the same period last year. “Graffiti has a significant impact on the appearance of our towns, reduces confidence in public safety and can cause permanent damage

to our reputation as a great place to live, work, play and invest,” Ms Marshall said. Over the recent Australia Day long weekend, areas around the Sea Acres Rainforest Centre were badly vandalised and Council encourages anyone who witnesses incidents of graffiti vandalism to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. “Our Graffiti Blasters program is made up of many proud local residents who volunteer their time and put a lot of effort into removing graffiti from public property. “We’re always on the lookout for more volunteers to join the Graffiti Blasters, and would love to hear from anyone who may have some spare time and would like to join our enthusiastic team,” added Ms Marshall. To learn more about volunteering as part of Council’s Graffiti Blasters Program visit pmhc. nsw.gov.au/volunteering or call Council’s Volunteer Coordinator on 6581 8111.

SINCE January 20 parts of the Mid North Coast have experienced over 20 earthquakes in what seismologists call a ‘swarm’. The largest of these quakes had a magnitude of 4.2 and occurred one kilometre off the coast of Nambucca Heads on Wednesday January 24 at about 1.30pm. According to Senior Seismologist Professor Phil Cummins from the Federal Government agency Geoscience Australia, the exact number of earthquakes is difficult to pinpoint because they are so small and there aren’t many seismographic stations in the area. While there are no major or active fault lines in the region, Professor Cummins said that fault lines are often present but many aren’t active. He did say that the majority of the recent earthquakes occurred in a triangle from Coffs Harbour to Comara and Scotts Head. “These earthquakes have been very small events so they are difficult to locate but the 4.2 quake off the coast was larger and had more certainty,” Professor Cummins said, “The quakes are caused from a build-up of stress in the earth’s crust, which gets transmitted from active tectonic plate boundaries thousands of kilometres away.” He explained that in countries close to us, such as Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, the Solomon Islands and Tonga, the plate boundaries form large active fault lines that cause a lot of earthquakes. “There are big forces between these plates

and those forces transmit stress to the interior of the plates and cause earthquakes in Australia,” Professor Cummins added. Apparently Australia experiences earthquakes all the time but they are less frequent than earthquakes in hotspots like Japan, and often occur in remote areas. Normally earthquakes follow a fore shock, main shock and after shock pattern but swarms don’t do that so they are harder to monitor and predict. Over the years there have been other swarms in NSW, South Australia and Western Australia. Professor Cummins and his team are not entirely sure why the Mid North Coast is experiencing a swarm at this time or how much longer it will continue. “Swarms are poorly understood,” he said. “So we appreciate fault reports on swarms from the public.” If more earthquakes do occur, Professor Cummins advises everyone to duck, cover and hold. He says to duck under a sturdy table, cover your head in case there is falling debris and hold onto something solid in case the earthquake is a violent one. He also believes the first line of defence is to build strong houses that comply to Australia’s building codes, and whatever happens look to your local Emergency Services for further advice. For more information on earthquakes and the MNC swarm check the Geoscience Australia website on www.ga.gov.au

Fresh from winning the Heron national titles, Rohan and Charley Nosworthy blitzed the monohull fleet in a borrowed boat, ‘Cat in the Hat’, at the Port Macquarie Sailing Club event last weekend

Heavy traffic for sailing SUNDAY was a delightful but busy day on the river for the Port Macquarie Sailing Club. The club was also running a series of races on the same section of the river, which was both awe inspiring and a little intimidating for our newer members, and somewhat tricky for the yachts threading their way through all the small boats. The southerly breeze was quite good, but somewhat gusty and shifty at times, making the crowded river even trickier, however, the mostly sunny skies and clear water as the top of the tide started to run out made it most enjoyable. The catamaran division was won easily on yardstick by Frank O’Rourke on Dino, as usual. After a race-long battle, second place went to Tony Kuhn on Stella, 20 seconds

ahead of Jack Corthals on Harpic. Further back were Rob Barwick on Drift and Dave Winter on Spica. Harpic took the handicap win ahead of Stella, followed by Dino, 10 seconds ahead of Drift, then Spica. In the monohull fleet, Rohan and Charley Nosworthy, fresh back from winning the Heron national titles, borrowed a NS14 Cat in the Hat and sailed with us to practice for next weekend’s Booti Cup. They then blitzed the field on yardstick to be almost 20 minutes ahead of Terry Howard in Ratz. Then followed Geoff Williams in Ocean Dreaming, Tony Walker in Deep Purple, Stuart Symons and James Zuirblis in Big Bang, Elsa Gandy and Caitlyn Hicks in Sailfish, Jane Cooper and Sharon Carney in Jupiter, Simon Gandy and Andrew Hurrell in Britannia.

New Kempsey team IMPLEMENTING an organisational restructure, improved strategic planning and better community connections are just a few of the broad aims of the new executive team of Kempsey Shire Council, that commenced this week. New General Manager, Craig Milburn was appointed in early December and has been involved in selecting his team before his formal start with this week. Craig has over 40 years’ experience in private industry, local government and the not-for-profit sector. His hands-on service delivery experience has led to positions with a senior management and strategic planning focus at a local and regional level. He has also led and worked with multidisciplinary teams and interagency task groups and most recently was Director of Finance, Corporate and Community Services at Shoalhaven City Council. “I’m thrilled about this opportunity and the move back to the North Coast to live in the Kempsey Shire,” he said. “One of the clear impressions I’ve formed in my research and the contact I’ve had over the last eight weeks, is that there are a lot of really dedicated and experienced people working at Kempsey Council, making sure the work of Council is delivered in the community.” Newly appointed Director Corporate, Stephen Mitchell, also commenced on Monday February 5, having come from a role with Mid North Coast Local Health District as Commercial Manager – Strategy, Contracts and Procurement.

The Nosworthy Father and Son also won on handicap, ahead of Sailfish, Ocean Dreaming, Jupiter, Deep Purple, Ratz, Big Bang, and Britannia. Cameron Marshall took his new (to him) X3 for a half lap shakedown but didn’t complete the course. Next weekend is the Booti Cup regatta at Wallis Lake at Forster over both days, where Port Macquarie will be defending the Booti Cup. There will be a social sail at Port Macquarie for those not going to Forster, but the next point score race in Port Macquarie is on the following weekend (18th) and will be a double header, with race 5 of the summer series at 11am, a BBQ lunch, and the 5th Club Championship at 2pm. Ron Apps is rostered on duty.

Better deal for farmers

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne MANY of our farmers and growers can now sell to more countries at reduced tariffs once the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for TransPacific Partnership(CPTPP) comes into effect. The deal gives farmers new and improved access to markets in ten counties around the Pacific Rim. With 67% of what we produce reliant upon export markets, this deal will see better prices flow directly to farmers by making their products more competitive. One in four jobs in regional Australia are also generated by exports. This will give our farmers more buyers to compete for their clean, green product. This has the potential to help agriculture/horticulture grow in our region. Australia already exports $12.3 billion of agricultural products to CPTPP countries, and this deal will speed up growth in the Pacific region. The CPTPP is the latest trade agreement the Coalition Government has secured, along with bilateral deals with China, Japan, South Korea and Chile which will help our farming sector grow. Many of our region’s farmers will benefit from a number of improved trading conditions and the reduction/elimination of tariffs. Trade Ministers in participating countries are expected to sign the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Tans-Pacific Partnership on March 8.

Historic family gathering By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC A FAMILY tree that traces its branches back to the First Fleet will be staging a reunion in Port Macquarie later this year. On October 13-14 the Frederick Meredith Descendants Group will be celebrating the lives of Frederick and his family and how they shaped the Port Macquarie we know today. “Our group is composed of interested family members who meet on a regular basis and every few years we hold a reunion to celebrate the life of Frederick and his family members,” said Isabel Browne, Secretary of the Frederick Meredith Descendants Group. “The last big celebration was in 2015 and we had over 300 people attend. This year the celebration is in Port Macquarie, and it’s very close to our hearts as Fredrick’s daughter Charlotte lived here for many years.” Frederick Meredith arrived on the First Fleet in 1788 and was listed as steward to the captain of the ‘Scarborough’. He returned to Australia in 1792 as one of the first free settlers to choose to travel to Australia. Frederick fathered nine children - seven girls and two boys. Three girls died in infancy. The eldest child to survive, Charlotte, was born in 1794 and died in Port Macquarie in 1851. Charlotte survived two husbands - William Stewart (died 1821) and Charles Farrell (died 1842). His other children were Frederick, Sophia, William, Ann and Eleanor. “This isn’t just about family history, but it’s also social history,” said Isabel. “And what Frederick’s children have done for the area.” Charlotte lived with William Stewart from age 16 and cared for his two sons and then had three of her own – Jane Rebecca in 1814, Robert in 1816, and John in 1818. William Stewart was a master mariner, sealer, whaler, and owner and master of the ‘Fly’, but was reported lost at Twofold Bay in 1821. Charlotte went on to marry Charles Farrell in 1825. Charles was one of the first free

She’s my fourth great grandmother. There are still quite a few people in the area that are descendent of

Charlotte.” Charles Farrell opened a ‘house of entertainment’ in Port Macquarie, which became the Settlers Arms Hotel, now the Settlers Inn Hotel. He also received a land grant of 100 acres near Limeburners Creek in 1837. “There is so much rich history that this family has given to our town and our local landmarks,” Isabel explained. “Charles Farrell was granted the second pub licence in Port, he had the Settlers Arms Hotel, where the Settlers Inn Hotel is today. Jane, Charlotte’s daughter, he provided all the timbers for the floor of the St Thomas Anglican Church. Jeremiah and Jane were both regular attendees there and even got married there on June 15, 1831. “Jeremiah was also the first to bring Heritage cattle to the Port Macquarie region, where they had them shipped out from England.” Charles and Charlotte lived on their property near Limeburners Creek for the remainder of their lives. Charles Farrell died in October l842 and Charlotte remained in Port Macquarie after his death where she died on March 3, 1851. Charlotte was known for her resourceful nature and courage as she supported her husbands through their business ventures and illness. She raised eight children of her own and three step-children, and moved to Port Macquarie at a time it was deemed a ‘miserable settlement’. Through hard work and little of life’s necessities, she survived it all. Family names associated with Charlotte include Stewart, Farrell, Warlters, Blair, McInherney, Gustafson, Wallace, Ryan, Furnifull, Lackey, Smith, Gamack – to name just a few. The Frederick Meredith Descendants 2018 Gathering is on October 13 and 14 at the Westport Bowling Club, Buller Street, Port Macquarie. The theme for the reunion is ‘Who we are and how we got here’ and includes guest speaker Ken Meredith.
