Whale ‘road’ now open

The whales are here! Jodie Lowe’s spectacular photo of a giant humpback whale at play just off our coast is every reason why a whale watching tour should be on everyone’s bucket list. Leigh Mansfield says the number of whales coming through right now is a major increase on previous years and there is no better place to see them than just off the Port Macquarie coast. Sharon is work-ready We need “ to look for

opportunities for savings to provide for our future services and infrastructure By SUE PATERICK

AFTER living at Wauchope for 39 years, businesswoman, Sharon Griffiths, knows the diverse region well and will contest the Macquarie-Hastings Council mayoral byelection on July 29. She loves the area’s variety, its natural beauty, its laid-back lifestyle and the friendly people. “We also have productive businesses who sell to local and international markets,” Councillor Griffiths said. She first became a Councillor five years ago to reduce the burden on the community by finding savings and efficiencies, plus improve roads and footpaths. In 2017 her goals remain much the same. “Living at Wauchope has given me a good understanding of the needs of rural and urban areas, and as my business is so broad I have contact with a wide cross-section of people from farmers to families, pensioners, business owners and tourists,” Cr Griffiths said. Apart from supporting community-driven initiatives, she would also like to ensure she challenges the organisation to deliver on services and infrastructure to meet current and future growth. Her wish is to take Council in a positive new direction using money more effectively and completing more work now. “With around $240 million in the bank this money needs to be spent,” Cr Griffiths explained. “As interest rates fall and costs continue to rise the purchasing power of the money held in the bank is reduced.” She lists her greatest achievements on Council so far as renegotiating loans savings to the tune of approximately $2.5 million, the introduction of a waste diversion program that will net around a million dollars and getting funding to solar power Council’s buildings. “I’m not in favour of rate rises and believe there are further savings to be found,” Cr Griffiths added. “Financial management should align directly with asset management plans.”

Cr Sharon Griffiths is seeking the city’s top job According to Cr Griffiths, community feedback indicates issues such as roads, footpaths, parks and gardens are a high priority, much the same as in the past. “Our community has a lot to offer and can provide valuable input through feedback and community driven projects,” she said. “We need to look for opportunities for savings to provide for our future services and infrastructure.” Her key focus will range from roads to infrastructure, opposing a 52.4 per cent rate rise, spending money more wisely, staying in touch with community, and looking for practical outcomes.

Her emphasis is on solutions and a cando attitude, which has served her well during her 32 years of experience in business and involvement with community. She has worked for an accountancy firm, private corporations and the Education Department at five small schools in the outer valley. Cr Griffiths is dedicated to seeing results for the region she calls home and looks forwards to working cooperatively with the Council into a bright future. “I don’t think about what I’ve done, I think about where I’m going next,” she said.

Bin there, done that in Kempsey THE roll-out of 36,000 new bins across the Kempsey Shire has reached the halfway point, with the remaining 18,000 bins to be delivered before the new waste service begins from July 1. Under the new system, which aims to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and keep costs down for the community over the long term, every household will receive: • a new green bin for weekly collection of food and garden waste; • a new yellow bin for fortnightly collection of household recycling; • and a new red bin for fortnightly collection of general rubbish. As part of the rollout, 12,000 kitchen caddies and rolls of compostable liners are being delivered to help make it easier to collect food scraps for disposal in the green bin each week. Keep an eye out for the Waste Services Guide attached to your new bins to help you sort and save. Shire households will also receive a reusable recycling bag once the new service starts. As part of the large-scale logistical project, Council has sent out 12,000 letters and flyers to residents, communicated with 40 local real estate agents and strata managers, recorded more than 350 conversations with residents via the customer service centre and spoken to over 1500 people about the new service out in the community. The communications program has included advertising in newspapers and on radio, a dedicated waste section on Council’s website, social media updates and a waste information trailer that visited more than 53 locations over seven weeks. In the lead up to the start of the new service from July 1, Council will continue to let residents know the details about removal of old bins through local media as well as Council’s website and Facebook page. Kempsey Shire Council’s Manager of Technical and Civic Services, Trevor Dickson, said the new waste contractor has kept collection changes to a minimum with less than 1000 households having changes made to the day or week of their collections. Council will write to these residents directly. “So if you don’t hear from us directly, the start of the new service will mean you should continue putting your yellow bin out on the same day of the week, on the same fortnightly rotation. You will then put your red bin out on the alternate fortnight, with the green bin being emptied every week. If in doubt place all three of your bins out for your first collection in July,” Mr Dickson said.

LETTER WEEK OF THE

All letters sent in must include your address and phone number and be under 350 words.

Mining proposal a complete travesty WITH regards to the proposal that a mining company wants to dig up and mine minerals or coal in Bonny Hills, Laurieton, King Creek, Wauchope or anywhere in the Hastings and remove even more bushland is a travesty to state the least. We’ve got our koala population verging on to the extinct list now, let

alone all the damage to all the other living species in these areas. Development is every day taking away the natural beauty all along the east coast. How could any responsible government representative even contemplate this awful idea? Everywhere we travel in our pristine country we see the damage to nature forests, coal pits, gravel

pits - when do we consider enough is enough? We are leaving nothing much of the natural beauty or all the wildlife that relies on its habitat for its survival. We elect people in power with the thought that they represent everyone not just the large corporation with the money to get what they want in the name of a dollar!

Well, if money is the only purpose to this life for some, good on them for their legacy. But for many of us we’d love to enjoy the natural beauty we were given and to know we don’t destroy it just for a buck! I urge everyone to make their voice heard NOW! C Towell Wauchope

Council not listening to community Ratepayers deserve much better THE only answer to the question “Does Council listen to the community?” in the case of Wauchope CBD is a resounding “NO!” Why haven’t the councillors put these facts to the residents before? Why not actively engage and involve the community to collectively lobby Council for a fairer deal? Tell us whether councillors debate proposals, consider the fair distribution of funds or just rubber stamp projects. Council, since 2005, has spent thousands of dollars on consultants, architect drawings, master plan books, traffic-management studies and endless surveys with little result. This is why we don’t have safe, clean CBD footpaths, we don’t have nice

shiny rubbish bins, we don’t have flowering trees and attractive gardens in every street, we don’t have the streets cleaned every day and we don’t any longer have seating for school children or a diving platform at the pool. A quick comparison of our relatively small CBD with Port Macquarie CBD highlights where councillors’ priorities lie. How quick they are to forget those grand pledges and promises made prior to the last election! If it’s to be “business as usual” after the next vote, let’s see if we can get two new faces and new ideas around the table. P Byatt Wauchope

DOWN CAN someone please explain to me how the Kmart development, now trading since March, 2017, has still not completed its infrastructure requirements as per DA. Just witness the road on the northern ride of Warlters Street rivalling Maria River Road for NSW’s worst road - and this is in the middle of town. The Park Street/Warlters Street corner resembles a boneyard for useless fill and discarded bits of construction. Council needs a rocket over this. Just allowing a warehouse development in this location is a tragedy. Just goes to prove money talks and everyone else walks. Thumbs Up Thumbs Down is your chance to have your say. TO the Wauchope Showground Ladies Auxiliary who did an excellent job catering for the Ulysses AGM held recently at the showground. Great value for money and served with smiling faces. Thank you.

Thumbs Up WHAT an enjoyable evening, we were fortunate enough to spend on the banks of Nambucca River, Macksville. The event, a fundraiser for Steve Wood, was a country muster. Vanessa, Lockie and all the artists are to be congratulated. Steve’s mum and dad were sitting beside us, it was so nice to meet them. All the best to Steve and his family. It was nice to see Macksville behind you. Earlier in the day $1000 was raised at the Services Club for the Rescue Helicopter.

THANK you to Terry and Tasman from Centre Management in Settlement City who came to my husband Noel’s aid when he became ill in the shopping centre. Your concern was much appreciated. Also, thank you to the fantastic paramedics Grant and Martin who attended to him. Thank you to the man who’s name we didn’t get who rushed to the chemist to get something that he thought might help and also to Leonie from the newsagency who helped calm us both down and sat with us the whole time.

Thumbs up TO the elderly couple for finding my daughter’s wallet and handing it promptly to the local police station. She lost it near the Mercure Hotel entrance to Port Central on Thursday, April 27 when it fell off her pram. Sending you both a big bouquet of thanks for your honesty.

LAST week the Friends of the ABC Mid North Coast held a forum at Westport Club. Rob Oakeshott was the guest speaker, the topic - Media and Politics. Of course, I had to go and hear Rob’s take on the subject. Rob didn’t really have much to say about the relationship between media and politics – and was very upfront about it. Drusi Meggett, President of Friends of ABC MNC, could see I was busting to say something and gave me the floor! Here’s my take! The relationship between mainstream media and politics is what it is because the government has allowed a duopoly in media, handing the power of the fourth estate to key players. Fake news abounds and it is all about the money, power and puppeteering skills. These guys are a law unto themselves because of a few elitists with interests in those media outlets. Independent media often get dumped in the same basket and many of them have been sucked into the void of big conglomerates and either been syndicated or shut down – taking the community voice with them. The government could support the independent community media by advertising, booking direct instead of through agencies that charge us 25 per cent or more, rip the arse out of our rates and then take 90+ days to pay, but expect our tax on time!

Thumbs Down

TO the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council for reacting to my previous concerns to the reduction of water storage in Cowarra Dam. The increase in storage from 54.3 per cent in March to 78 per cent in the Cowarra Dam in May is a great improvement and hopefully this will continue to increase this year.

have a Council of bumblers after losing two very costly court cases (I hope they are not going to throw money after bad) and now producing the rate rise that eight months ago was only a scenario and would not actually happen. If the 5.39 per cent increase is applied each of the next five years it will approximate a total increase of 30 per cent over the current rates. Ratepayers deserve better treatment than what has been given the past 12 months. B Thompson Port Macquarie

Fishing tale just gets bigger By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC HUNDREDS of fishermen, women, and children will soon be coming together for one of the most popular fishing events on the Mid North Coast. The Lake Cathie Fishing Charity Auction is on Sunday, June 18, when fishing enthusiasts will donate their weekend catch to the Lake Cathie Rural Fire Service and Laurieton Marine Rescue. People will put their lines in from 2pm on Friday and will have until 11am Sunday to bring their catch in to be weighed where it will stay on ice until the bidding begins. “The event’s been running for over 30 years,” said Melissa Donchi, Event Organiser for the Lake Cathie Fishing Charity Auction. “People come from all over the Mid North Coast.” The more than 250 anglers will be catching many different species of fish, such as bream, flathead, snapper, jewfish, blackfish, whiting, tailor, leather jacket, and pearl perch. “The most popular fish at the auction are snapper and black fish, because they go for a lot of money in the supermarkets. Flathead is also very popular,” said Melissa. “The fish are gutted and gilled, so they’re cleaned. They are then auctioned fresh with their heads on. “If there is a really big fish we will auction that off on its own. But if there’s just five legal sized flatheads than they might just auction five off at a time. We also bundle them up with different fish, like three brim, two flat head etc.” Last year the event raised over $8,000, with a jewfish selling for over $200. However, Melissa says that there are definitely some great bargains that people won’t be able to get anywhere else. “We’re hoping to raise over $10,000 this year,” she said. “Last year everyone was paying roughly $10 a kilo for their fish. And it’s all

Above and right - some of the catches andf action from previous Lake Cathie Fishing Charity Auctions entry fees, you don’t have to be a member of any going to such a great cause. “The funds really help The Lake Cathie Rural kind of club, and you can just be a regular person Fire Service and Laurieton Marine Rescue. I who just loves fishing and wants to help donate know that they have bought ‘Walkie Talkies’ money. As long as you donate your catch, you go (with the donated money) so that they can keep into the draw to win the prizes. “Each individual biggest fish prize is going to in contact with each other when they’re out on jobs. It is valuable equipment like that they be worth over $200 in value. We will also have a raffle on the day and would otherwise have to raise their own funds we’ve got a jumping castle there for the kids.” for.” Why not make that ‘Gone Fishin’ bumper Most importantly, the day is about having fun sticker a reality at the Lake Cathie Fishing and getting family and friends together. “Anyone can fish,” Melissa said. “There’s no Charity Auction on Sunday June 18 at 1pm at

Lake Cathie Bowling Club. The fishing dates are from Friday, June 16, until Sunday, June 18, with fish at the weigh in by 11am. Some of the prizes and raffles up for grabs include quality donations from various local business and three accommodation packages. There will be sausage sizzle, raffles and entertainment. The auctioneer, Chris Perry will be entertaining with his fun and energetic auction skills so don’t be shy, it’s a friendly atmosphere with affordable fish to be snapped up. PINSON Say’s – Community Kept in the Dark on JETGO Exit In the September 2016 election I stood on a platform of making the Council more transparent and accountable to the community. In the lead up to the upcoming by-election on July 29 my views on this have not changed. The decision by JETGO Australia to cease its Port Macquarie to Melbourne service is a recent example of Council keeping information from the residents and ratepayers of the Port Macquarie Hastings area. Last month on Monday May 29, I personally called JETGO Australia CEO, Mr Paul Bredereck and spoke at length with him on the reasons for the JETGO withdrawal. During this conversation Mr Bredereck informed me that he had personally called Mayor Besseling shortly before his resignation announcement to advise him of the commercial decision by JETGO to end services in Port Macquarie on 17 July 2017. As a community we must ask why then did it take from the 8th of May until the 27th of May for Council to advise the community of this service withdrawal? Suprisingly during an interview by Michael Spooner of ABC radio, acting Mayor Cr Lisa Intemann commented that she was only informed on Saturday 28th May via a call from the General Manager and whilst she was attending the Ulysses motorcycle parade. Why did it take almost 3 weeks for elected Councillors to be advised? In my opinion the community should be informed promptly by Council about any matter which affects the level of service it receives. While it was a commercial decision of JETGO to end the service, there are serious questions to be asked regarding a 33 page consultants report provided to entice JETGO Australia to invest into the Port Macquarie market. Should I be elected as Mayor on July 29, I pledge to the community that I will ensure Council communicates in an open and honest way surrounding all issues which are of importance or affect our day to day lives. Your vote will ensure a more transparent Council in the future. I welcome your comments about what is important to you and can be emailed at pinson4mayor@gmail.com or contacted at my office on 65 85 2519. THE whales have arrived. It looks like this year is going to be a very busy whale season with local whale and dolphin enthusiast, Leigh Mansfield, spotting 126 whales during May - a count that he hasn’t experienced for over six years. “Here in Port Macquarie the whale season starts on the first of June,” said Leigh. “The first whale I saw here was on May 12 and up until the end of May I had spotted 126 whales in total. “Of those, whales one was a Bryde’s whale, one was unknown, and all the rest were humpbacks. That is one of the largest counts we’ve had for May for about six years. “Last year we only had 24 whales in May. You just can’t pick it, that’s nature for you.” Port Macquarie is perfectly placed for whale watchers. “You’ve got Byron Bay which is the most eastern point of Australia, then you’ve got areas around here - we’re about the second boundary out,” explained Leigh. “So when the whales migrate … and we are so far out, that’s why the whales come in close here. Especially the babies, who come in really close to coastline. “In Port Macquarie we have a fair few different types of whales coming through. We have our Killer whales, Minke, Bryde’s, and

NO GAP • • • •

Above: Some of Jodie Lowe’s beautiful photos of whales off Port Macquarie. The centre photo is of a one-day-old calf Pilot whales that come through, but 99% of our whales are Humpbacks. “We also get the Southern Right whales coming through, they come up here sometimes and they usually hug the coastline and they move very, very slowly. “There was one four years ago that went from Lighthouse to Town Beach and it took it two days. You often see them in South Australia.”

If there’s one thing on your bucket list, Leigh says it should be to go whale watching. “I tell everyone to put it on a bucket list,” Leigh said. “If you haven’t gone out and seen whales, do it, because they are the biggest animals we’ve got now. They are bigger than elephants. “Don’t stand on the headland, go out on a boat and have a look at them. Go with a proper whale

tour. They know all the rules and regulations.” Leigh says people are sometimes intimidated by whales and says the Moby-Dick myth should be put to rest. “The Humpback whales can grow up to about 15-16 metres, which is quite large when you see them out on the boats,” said Leigh. “The whales are called gentle giants, because they are. Too many people watch Moby-Dick and think every whale is going to be like that. They’re not. “Anyone who’s never seen a whale up close should go out and see them. I see thousands of them a year, but you never get sick of it. “Last year I sited over 10,000 whales coming past Port Macquarie, that’s a distance from the shoreline to out about 10kilmetres. The most I’ve ever counted in one day was about four years ago was 288 in one day. “During peak whale watching season when the whales are coming through in early July and during October you can get them anywhere from the bar going out, so you might only have to go out a couple of hundred metres. Generally speaking the average distance is usually about 3-4 kilometres.” Why not enjoy the fresh air and spot a couple of friendly giants? Port Macquarie Cruise Adventures do whale watching and dolphin tours everyday. Visit http://www. cruiseadventures.com.au for more information.

To help Steven and Samantha cope financially during this difficult time, one of their closest friends, Lucinda Reid, has organised a fundraiser and is asking the local community to support it

AGED just 24, Macleay Valley local Steven Stewart was living life to the full with his high school sweetheart when he suffered a suspected stroke in early May that left him paralysed from the neck down. He has lost total control of his body and can currently only communicate with his eyes and face. The cause of his tragedy is unclear and this is making it hard for Steven and his family and friends to come to terms with. Raised in the Macleay, Steven attended Kempsey High School where he met the love of his life Samantha Smith. The happy couple were living at Bendigo in Victoria where Samantha was studying a degree in Occupational Therapy. Steven was proud to be supporting her through university. The unthinkable happened on May 8 when Steven began experiencing chest pains. Samantha took him to Bendigo Hospital’s emergency department and while there Steven collapsed from what doctors believe was a spinal stroke. He is now hospitalised in Melbourne and is undergoing intense, life-saving medical care. While the road to recovery will be long and hard, Steven is making small improvements every day. To help Steven and Samantha cope financially during this difficult time, one of their closest friends, Lucinda Reid, has organised a fundraiser and is asking the local community to support it. Lucinda grew up with Steven and Samantha and said coping with his sudden illness has been really hard. “I just wanted to help in any way I could,”

she added. The fundraiser will be held at the Willawarrin Hotel on Saturday, June 17 from 4pm. There will be a sausage sizzle, jumping castle, cake stalls, face painting and a lucky door prize. A DJ will supply music during this fun-filled afternoon and there will be karaoke too. “Any help the community can give in supporting this fundraiser will be humbly and gratefully received,” Lucinda said. Donations can also be made to the Steven Stewart Fund at BSB: 012-703 and account: 465431863. “Any donations towards assisting Steven and his recovery would be a blessing and much appreciated,” she added. For more information contact Lucinda on 0447 128 323.

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

THE Hastings’ construction boom is set to continue with the recent announcement of $8.5 million in Federal capital funding and a further 40 new residential aged care places worth around $2.62m a year towards a new $30m residential aged care development in Wauchope. Local aged care provider Bundaleer would expand its current operations in Wauchope to meet current and future demand of a rapidly growing population. The new development will be constructed next to Wauchope Hospital. Bundaleer has been at the forefront in the planning and development of aged care services in our community for many years and I’m delighted they have been successful in their bid to secure Federal funds to pursue this major expansion of residential aged care services, dementia care and mental health support in our local area. The Federal Coalition Government is investing record funding in aged care services, particularly in our electorate of Lyne, and I am pleased this latest announcement will deliver more aged care options for seniors in our community. It will also deliver a major economic dividend for the local area through the creation of many jobs throughout the construction period, and also permanent jobs across a range of professions well into the future. Bundaleer Chief Executive Officer Gareth Norman said the additional 40 beds would bring together the greatly needed requirements for dementia support in the local area. The Johnstone Street facility of 55 beds has been the backbone of Bundaleer for decades and this exceptional designed facility will offer more than just a new home to the 140 residents who will call Bundaleer home, but the thousands we will care for into the future. Our community will see a great benefit from the new build, not only will we be creating more than 30 to 40 long-term jobs in the delivery of care, we will be creating jobs in construction and enhanced benefits for the town of Wauchope. Over 60 people are expected to be employed throughout the construction phase of the project. The design is almost complete and the development approval process has started. Construction will start on the development in the next 12-18 months and the timeframe for construction is an estimated 18 months. The cost of the build will be in the region of $25m to $30m. It will be the largest build in Wauchope. Bundaleer will have almost 200 residents in our care and over 200 staff employed.

Many projects on priority list

VISION For The Future: Last week in Parliament I spoke about my priorities for the Port Macquarie electorate. I believe over the past six years I have demonstrated through the delivery of some significant projects that we have a State Government that is getting on with the job by investing in key infrastructure like the Lake Cathie Public School, the new Stingray Creek Bridge and funding to upgrade the Port Macquarie Airport. But there are many more projects still on my list that I want to see delivered. I have identified a parcel of land adjacent to the Douglas Vale Winery that would be suitable for a community education centre that could potentially accommodate the Port Macquarie Men’s Shed and the Hastings Arts and Craft Centre. The land had been earmarked for sale by the Department of Education, but I have been in ongoing discussions with the Minister for Education to reconsider this plan and retain the land. I am hopeful of a positive outcome. Other issues on my radar include the revetment wall at Lake Cathie, the development and improvement of the Food for Less carpark in Port Macquarie and the much talked about Orbital Road which will address increasing traffic movements that are impacting on Ocean Drive, the industrial area, the health precinct and

The Cleanup and Prevention Program is funded under the NSW Government’s $337 million Waste Less, Recycle More initiative to help councils and other public land managers to reduce illegal dumping. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has been awarded $147,560 to work with land managers and regional waste groups to reduce illegal dumping and to help fund the clean up dumping hot-spots. Women’s network lunch FEMALE business owners and employees recently attended a dynamic luncheon event with the Hastings Business Women’s Network to gain a greater understanding of how to improve their customer experience. With a goal to gain as much customer service inspiration as possible within their lunch break, the group of business women were divided into Table Talk Workshops and each assigned a customer experience expert as a group facilitator. Sessions were then guided to encourage group members to share their customer service challenges and solutions in an effort to inspire and educate others. HBWN Professional Development Coordinator, Kayley Riddle, said this style of event was chosen to encourage a sharing of knowledge so that attendees could take away new ideas and strategies that they could then use within their own roles and businesses. “The HBWN is all about inspiring, supporting and empowering women in business. This event served as the perfect opportunity for our members to have some of their more pressing customer experience questions answered by a carefully selected panel of facilitators” Ms Riddle said. Table Talks addressed the impact recruitment, culture and training has on the customer experience, as well as building brand consistency, customer relationships and loyalty.

Making a song and dance about shindig

A FRIEND said recently he was going to a shindig. He wasn’t going to have an argument with somebody – or at least I don‘t think he was. He was going to a party, one of those occasions that start out with a good time and sometimes end in a quarrel, or worse. This is one of those words that reminded me of my school days. I hadn‘t heard it for years. When I was a young boy I always thought of it as a word that was made up, but I have since discovered that most if not all dictionaries include it. The word goes back, in print, to at least 1871. Much later it came to represent a violent quarrel. But the word shindig seems to have had a troubled past. The dictionaries say it is of “uncertain origin”, but influenced to some extent by shindy. Some old dictionaries say shindy means a blow on the shins, which doesn’t help much. Opinions differ about the start of shindig. But shindig in its early days represented a country dance or a lively gathering of any kind. The word was first used, in print, in 1871. In September of that year B. Harte commented in Atlantic Monthly that a Puritan meeting was “no Pike County shindig”. I gathered that he did

my

LAURIE BARBER

not find anything enjoyable in going to a Puritan meeting. Later shindig was defined as “a dance or party”. But in 1956 an air defence exercise was called “one of those NATO shindigs”. Reader’s Digest describes it as a merry party, probably a variation of shindy.. Then we come to shindy. In 1961 author Eric Partridge defined a shindy as “a violent quarrel, a tremendous fuss”. Then in 1977 E Crispin in Glimpses of Moon said “they’d kick up a shindig naturally, but it was always their husbands they were furious with”. It can even mean a Scottish game resembling hockey, starting about 1771. Incidentally, the word shin has a lot of meanings. It can mean the front of the human leg, the

Beauty & Bubbles

lower part of a leg of beef, or the striking of a person over the shins, to borrow money, the sharp slope of a hill, a tree, a dog, a religion or some people who live in Kashmir. It even refers to the plural of shoe, along with several other meanings. I wonder of shindig can have any resemblance to knees up. If you’re old enough, you might remember the song called Knees Up Mother Brown. My memory tells me that the knees were continually raised while the words of the song were in progress. It was the sort of party you didn’t tell anyone about, in case they misunderstood. But a wild party, or one not so wild, was called a knees up. I was never allowed go to such a party, so I’m guessing what went on. Ask your mother. As for party – these days it always seems to represent a joyous gathering, but it simply means a group of people. Now I remember that my friend who said he was going to a shindig-- the comment at the start of this column -- made his comment at the club. He was probably going home to the missus and did not know what fate would await him when he arrived. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au.

Walk & Jog success AN estimated 500 people ran and walked in the annual Port Macquarie Memory Walk & Jog at Westport Park last Sunday. Gary Thomas from Alzheimer’s Australia NSW said it was a fantastic event and thanked all those who took part and raised funds to help people with dementia, their families and carers. “We are so delighted with the level of support and community spirit shown at the Memory Walk & Jog,” Mr Thomas said. “It was fantastic to see an estimated 500 people out running and walking in support of people with dementia.” Mr Thomas also acknowledged the many supporters of the event. “I’d like to thank Opal Aged Care for their support of Memory Walk & Jog. Without them, we would not be able to put on such an important fundraising and awareness event,” he said. “I would also really like to thank the Port Macquarie community and our many volunteers for their ongoing contribution.”

Get a flu shot each year THE flu season is upon us and older Australians are most at risk. With the elderly, catching the flu can result in severe illness and even death. It is estimated that each year the flu causes 13,500 hospitalisations and more than 3000 deaths among Australians over 50 years of age. Our best defence against the flu is to vaccinate every year. It is important to do this every year as the flu strains affecting our community can change all the time. And for those aged 65 and older, the flu vaccination is free. The influenza virus is especially dangerous

for elderly people, particularly if they have underlying medical conditions, or are susceptible to pneumonia. Flu symptoms include tiredness, high fever, chills, headache, coughing, sneezing, runny noses, poor appetite, and muscle aches. Older people with the flu can experience complications and end up seriously ill in hospital This winter, North Coast Primary Health Network and the Northern NSW Local Health District are working together to educate the community about how to avoid getting the flu and possibly ending up in hospital. North Coast GP and NCPHN Clinical Advisor

Dr Dan Ewald said it was important to get the flu shot every year as the flu strains which affect the community are changing all the time. “By having a flu shot each year, you decrease the chances of getting influenza and spreading the virus to others,” he said. “The flu poses major risks to many people, especially older folks. The influenza virus infection can potentially develop into pneumonia or other serious complications such as multi-organ failure leading to death.” Talk to your GP or pharmacist today about getting the flu shot and staying well this winter. The flu, it’s not just about you.

Town cleaning starts

PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council has started footpath cleaning and sealing in the Port Macquarie town centre. The cleaning, which started on Monday, will occur nightly (excluding Saturday and Sunday) starting at 6pm and finishing at 6am, and is expected to be completed by Friday, June 16. Temporary barriers will be placed along the base of business entry doors to prevent water entering premises, however businesses are encouraged to place towels on the internal side of their doorways for further protection. Council thanks the community and local businesses for their cooperation and patience during the cleaning and sealing, and for the ongoing commitment to working with Council in keeping our town centre clean, tidy and safe. If businesses have any questions or problems during the cleaning works they can contact the operators on 0422648670 or Council on 6581 8111.

Funds for new bridge MEMBER for Oxley Melinda Pavey has announced $645,000 in funding to Bellingen Shire Council as part of the NSW Government’s ‘Fixing Country Roads’ program. “The project will completely replace the old Deep Creek Bridge, Coramba Rd, Dorrigo with a new, high-capacity concrete bridge,” Mrs Pavey said.“The bridge will also be raised to improve the road alignment and incorporate a pedestrian cycle path on one side.” The ‘Fixing Country Roads’ program involves the NSW Government working with local councils to identify important infrastructure upgrades needed on councilowned and managed roads to improve safety and freight productivity. “The new bridge and road alignment will provide better connections to state roads and highways. The project will increase the load capacity of the bridge from 25 to 50 tonnes,” said Mrs Pavey.

Orchids at their bloomin’ best for weekend show By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC COME and enjoy the psychedelic colours and patterns of the orchids at this year’s Winter Bloom Orchid Show. The Camden Haven Orchid Society will be holding their Winter Show this Saturday and Sunday (June 10-11) at the Laurieton United Services Club. “The day is for the public to come along and have a look at what’s on show,” said John Matthews, Secretary of the Camden Haven Orchid Society. “It’s for people who grow orchids as well as people who are just interested in orchids in general. There’s even potting demonstrations which will help beginners to get started growing their own orchids.” There will be more than 200 exhibits at the show by orchid growers from Camden

Haven, Bellingen, Kempsey, Port Macquarie, Wauchope, Taree and Forster areas. Exhibits will include Phalaenopsis, Cymbidium and Cattleya Hybrids. Many people in the Mid North Coast, like John, have caught the orchid bug. “You just get the bug and away you go,” laughed John. “Our group is also quite social and we have a social outing each month at a local restaurant or we have a BBQ. “The orchids have been traditional over the years in a lot of wedding corsages. We have found that we have a lot of people buy orchids at our show and they just grow them for their own pleasure. “They might not necessarily be a member of any orchid society, they just come along and buy the plants.” The Winter Show will feature 14 different classes and 74 sub-sections to go before the

judging panel appointed by The Australian Orchid Council, NSW division. To assist new members and the public interested in growing orchids, there will be potting demonstrations each day - at 10.30am on Saturday by Allan Wallace and at 11am on Sunday by Wayne Stephensen. A society sales table for orchids, bromeliads and foliage plants and accessories will be available. Society members will be more than happy to give advice on growing conditions and plants suitable to the region. The presentation to prize winners will be at 3pm on Sunday. Entry is by donation to ‘Heart Support Australia’. The show will be open to the public on Saturday from 10am to 4pm and on Sunday from 9.30am to 3.00pm. The Show Marshalls will be Allan Barnes and Richard Murray.

Town Square project WORKS to transform Port Macquarie’s Town Square are scheduled to start this week. The project will see the redevelopment of the popular Town Square into a more vibrant, usable and accessible area, providing an attractive new gathering space for locals and visitors to the CBD. “We are in a period of unprecedented growth across our region, and having a modern and vibrant Town Square is extremely important to our local economy and the community,” said Acting Director Andrew Doig. “Local businesses and the community will benefit from a new, open and inviting space that will be a real drawcard for families and visitors, and add to the wonderful facilities that are already provided within the CBD and along our foreshore,” Mr Doig said. The area will be transformed to include new al fresco dining areas and wider footpaths, with new seating and feature lighting making the area a more inviting place to relax.

Bridge safety screens IMPROVED safety is on the way for motorists with work starting on the installation of screens on the Oxley Highway bridges across John Oxley Drive. Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams said the NSW Government is funding the work to reduce the risk of rock throwing. “Throwing objects onto a highway where vehicles are travelling at speed is illegal, extremely dangerous and can easily result in tragedy,” Mrs Williams said. “It’s hoped the installation of safety screens will discourage people from being thoughtless and improve safety for motorists travelling below the Oxley Highway. “The installation is being done in stages to reduce the impact to the community, with work on the westbound side carried out in the morning and eastbound in the afternoon.” Mrs Williams said vegetation will also be trimmed to improve access to the pedestrian footpath on John Oxley Drive and graffiti will be removed on and around the bridges.

Major Kempsey plans

IMPROVEMENTS to beach reserves and caravan parks, as well as increased sporting facilities and investigations into an alternative bridge across the Macleay, are just some of the major projects contained in Kempsey Shire Council’s forward plans. At an extra-ordinary meeting held late last week Council resolved to place the suite of Integrated Planning documents, including the Operating Plan for next financial year and the Delivery Program for this term of Council, on public exhibition. Kempsey Shire Council Mayor Liz Campbell says the ambitious plans look to balance road maintenance and ongoing service delivery alongside the desire to invest in the future growth of the Macleay. “We want to make the Macleay Valley a place of choice, where people live, visit and invest. This can be achieved by attracting more residents and visitors to the area and supporting new housing and business opportunities,” said Mayor Campbell.

Road improvements

ALMOST half a million dollars in works to improve the condition of a number of roads in the South West Rocks vicinity will soon commence as part of Kempsey Shire Council’s roadworks program. Work will begin next week on Entrance Street to rehabilitate the pavement and resurface with bitumen before moving onto Lawson Street, Wentworth Avenue, Elizabeth Street and finishing at Jubilee Street. Lawson and Jubilee will both also have failed kerb and guttering replaced. Council’s recent Community Satisfaction Survey indicated that 57 per cent of residents have noticed an improvement in local roads in the last 12 months. Council’s Manager of Engineering Works, Tony Green, said improving the condition of local roads in the Shire is a key focus for Council.

Footbridge almost ready

The new Oil Terminal Footbridge at South West Rocks

REPLACEMENT work to the Oil Terminal Footbridge, crossing Saltwater Creek off Phillip Drive, at South West Rocks is nearing completion. The new bridge replaces the old wooden structure which was damaged by vandals and closed for around 12 months. While it is similar in design and size to the old bridge, the replacement valued at $160,000 has a wider deck and is much safer. Due to the bridge’s sensitive wetlands location, Kempsey Shire Council had to seek complex environmental approvals prior to any construction commencing. “We have had to work with minimal impact on the soil, water and vegetation at

the site so we have used the existing piles and footings,” said Council’s Manager of Engineering Works, Tony Green. “New concrete abutments have been installed at either end of the bridge and the new structural components are now being installed. “All the structural components are composite fibre and all the fixings are stainless steel for longevity. “On completion of the structural components, the deck and handrails will be placed and the bridge will be reopened to the public.” Mr Green said the bridge is expected to be opened to the public by the end of this week, in time for the long weekend.

Letters extra

It’s time to have your say on airport expansion THE Save Kempsey Airport Action Group welcomes the recent resolution by Kempsey Shire Council to commence meaningful community consultation on the proposed expansion of the pilot training college at Kempsey airport. Council voted unanimously at its meeting on May 16 to organise an independently facilitated community forum, including an evening forum, which will allow Council to outline the present situation regarding the Australian International Aviation College (AIAC)

Development Application and the Memorandum of Understanding. The forums are seen as the start of full dialogue with the community on all issues, not just noise and the planned Fly Neighbourly Agreement. Council will have the opportunity to dispel some misinformation currently circulating in the community and to answer those questions that can be reasonably answered at the present time. It is anticipated that Council will be in a position

to outline the processes it will follow to address community concerns, including opportunities for community engagement. Most importantly, for the first time, the forums provide an opportunity for the whole community to directly voice their opinions and concerns and for Council to listen to us - the ratepayers in this Shire - to record the issues and include them in its processes to assess the Development Application. There are a variety of opinions on this issue

and it remains important for them to be aired with dignity and respect. The Save Kempsey Airport Action Group supports this initiative by Council and strongly encourages the WHOLE community to attend, regardless of whether you support the expanded pilot training operations as currently proposed, are against it or sitting on the fence. It’s finally time to have your say. Adam Ulrick Save Kempsey Airport Action Group

Ignoring the facts

and the expected formulation of an Airport Consultative Group, had Ron attended along with almost 300 residents, the NJRPP meeting and subsequent council meetings, he would know that those outcomes were brought about only because of the diligence by Adam Ulrich and his group in making the panel aware of serious failures in the Kempsey Council’s approach to the DA, not because Council decided to play nice. I now turn my attention to the correspondent to the Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down section of the Independent, who resorts to name calling and states: “NIMB’s....telling the industry how it should be run.” We are not telling an industry how it should be run, we are simply stating that this operation is unsuitable for this area. The correspondent further states that “the Kempsey Aviation College is an opportunity..... Kempsey needs it.” Why do we need it? What opportunity does it offer? Why do we need a foreign-owned and operated company moving into our beautiful valley to train mostly their own pilots? Why are they given rights over residents and permitted to have such an effect on our lives and property values? Why does Hainan assert that failure to accommodate their demands will have a catastrophic effect on their business model but doesn’t consider that their demands will have

that same effect on residents? Why is Council not listening to residents? Claims of job creation and spending capabilities are wildly inaccurate with the figures having been gleaned from city-based surveys of university students as far back as 2009 and none more recent than 2014. Foreign-owned companies such as Hainan don’t come here to spend money, they come here to make money and send it home. It’s time to embrace local opportunities that will actually bring residential and tourism benefits to the area. What the Macleay Valley really needs is a Council that will open up land for residential purposes, seek out opportunities to promote tourism and make tourism infrastructure simpler to develop. Rose Cunningham Yarravel

major airlines, however I am not in any way suggesting Port Macquarie take on this venture. Secondly, Mr Walesby claimed my statement regarding the Joint Regional Planning Panel was incorrect. However, he did not indicate in his letter that he attended the meeting so where he obtained his information is questionable. I did attend the meeting and I was quoting information supplied at that meeting. Thirdly, the AIAC have indeed applied to operate 6am until midnight every day of the year. This brings me to question why Mr Walesby is stirring the pot when he lives in Port Macquarie and will not be subject to any inconveniences from this proposal. This college is training foreign-speaking pilots around the region daily. They do not leave the area but fly round in circles the whole time unless they are landing or taking off. I do not live close to the airport but I have endured these aircraft droning overhead incessantly during daylight hours and early evening with little or no respite (and this is prior to them getting approval which will be far worse). It is not a pleasant prospect to live with. I would like to suggest that before any further comment be made they should look more deeply into the issues, clarify true facts and perhaps walk a mile in the shoes of others and not stir the pot. Glen Ravenscroft Temagog

ONCE again I must take Ron Walesby to task over his claims (Letters, June 1) as he continues to ignore the facts. I repeat, look at the ACTUAL development application instead of relying on a ‘report’ from somewhere or other. The figures and intentions are all contained therein so there can be no doubt in the matter as to the correct numbers and intended flying times, to which Council lodged no objection. Ron stated figures are calculated by making an assumption on the flight numbers and time frames and refusing to obtain the facts in the DA and, with all his industry experience, neglects to include the flyover factor. Perhaps surprisingly to some, pilots don’t just take off and land, they fly around, they practise stalls, banking, emergency procedures etc and in so doing, the decibel level can be more than just a nuisance. Additionally, the constancy factor must be considered as the constant drone every day is annoying, intrusive and distressing, destroying our right to quiet enjoyment of our properties. Living in and commenting from Port Macquarie doesn’t really count in this matter. As for the Northern Joint Regional Planning Panel (NJRPP) suspension of the DA decision

No respite from noise I WOULD like to take this opportunity to reply to Ron Walesby’s published letter. It claims that I supplied misleading information regarding the proposal for Australian International Aviation College, which wishes to increase activity at the Kempsey airport. Firstly, it is undisputed that Port Macquarie airport is bigger and better equipped than Kempsey. It hosts major domestic flights by

1 July marks some of the biggest super and tax changes I’ve seen in the last 10 years. These changes were mainly announced in the 2016 year budget and will affect everyone in 2017 and the years to come. If you haven’t reviewed your retirement plans and your SMSF yet, then time is running out. Whilst you might not be flush with cash now and able to put large amounts into superannuation, it’s important that you are aware of what is possible and what’s no longer allowed. In general some of the major changes in superannuation coming to play from 1 July 2017 are; • Concessional contributions reducing to $25,000 per annum • Non-Concessional Contributions reducing from $180,000 pa to $100,000 pa with a further restriction if your super balance is above $1.6 million at the end of the previous financial year. • Individuals earning over $250,000 adjusted taxable income, will now pay up to 15% additional tax on their concessional superannuation contributions. This previously only applied to individuals earning over $300,000 adjusted taxable income. • A new $1.6 million cap is placed on pension accounts and this is applied to each member of a superfund, NOT the superfund in total. • Transition to Retirement Income Streams will lose their tax-free status. Given it’s only a few weeks away it’s imperative that you seek advice from your SMSF Specialist Advisor on how these changes will affect you, your SMSF and your retirement plans combined with your normal end of year tax planning. Apart from these changes its also prudent to ensure a couple of the following things before the end of the year: If you’re already drawing a pension ensure you have drawn the minimum amount required before 30 June to continue to maintain tax fee earnings in the fund. If you are planning to put extra money into superannuation ensure you talk to your accountant to check if you will be eligible for a tax deduction, ensure you haven’t reached your Concessional Contribution cap for the year and importantly that the money is received by the the super fund by 30th June to be deductible. If you would like to have a free 2016/17 Year End Tax Planning checklist emailed to you please contact our office on 02 6584 9201 Disclaimer The contents above is current at time of print and is intended as general news and not advice, as each taxpayers situation will vary depending on the specific circumstances relating to that taxpayer. Professional legal or Accounting advice should be sought on how these measures relate to you and your circumstances.

Annabella’s archives THE Port Macquarie Museum will host a free talk titled ‘Archiving Annabella’ at 10am on June 9 to mark International Archives Day. Clive Smith, the Museum’s honorary archivist will talk about his work in documenting and recording the archives of Annabella Boswell (nee Innes) held in the Museum’s collection. Annabella Boswell’s archives comprise documents, journals, correspondence and artwork created and collected by her during and after her time in residence at Lake Innes House during the 1830s and 1840s. “Archives reveal much about our lives, our history and our heritage,” said Mr Smith. “Annabella Boswell’s archives are a rich and unique collection of materials which, on examination, adds significantly to our information about the people, places and events of our past and about the life of a privileged young woman living in the colony of New South Wales. “Much of our local history during the 1830s and 1840s has been gleaned from the writings of young Annabella Boswell. “Annabella Boswell’s archives have been used to interpret the Innes House Ruins and the surrounding area. However, her archives reveal a great deal more than that.” Broadly speaking, archives are records preserved because of their legal or enduring historical value or significance and constitute a major cultural heritage and information resource. “Archives are not only used by historians”, said Mr Smith. “One of our many roles at the Port Macquarie Museum is to protect and preserve the unique and extraordinary documents in our collection and to ensure that we continue to collect and make such materials accessible to the public.” The aim of International Archives Day is to raise public awareness of the importance

Govt targets revenge porn MEMBER for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams has welcomed the NSW Government’s action to make sharing intimate images without consent a serious crime, saying it would hold controlling and vengeful offenders to account and help end victim blaming. “People who share intimate images of victims without their consent have no place in our area and they will soon face prison time for their destructive breaches of privacy,” Mrs Williams said. The Government has introduced into Parliament the Crimes Amendment (Intimate Images) Bill 2017 that will make it an offence to intentionally record or distribute, or to threaten to record or distribute, an ‘intimate image’ of a person without their consent. The offences will carry a maximum sentence of three years in jail and an $11,000 fine. Intimate images include photos and videos of a person’s private parts or of a person engaging in a private act, such as undressing, showering, bathing, using the toilet or sexual behaviour not ordinarily performed in public. They also include images which have been altered to appear to show a person’s private parts, or a person engaged in a private act. Courts will be given a ‘take down’ power to compel offenders to take reasonable steps to destroy the images colloquially known as ‘revenge porn’. Attorney General Mark Speakman said the reforms target the predatory and manipulative behaviour of those who use ‘revenge porn’ to threaten, control or humiliate victims. “It’s not the victim’s fault when an explicit image is shared without consent, and yet too often victims face a devastating emotional and social toll,” he said. “Offenders will now suffer consequences and the power balance will shift back towards victims, which is what the Mid North Coast community would expect.”

Enterta nment WEEKLY

Zola’s gothic play ÉMILE Zola’s gothic horror Thérèse Raquin will be staged at the Glasshouse on June 14 and 15 at 11am in a brilliant adaptation for the stage by Gary Abrahams. More than 150 years after it was written, Zola’s story of murderous starcrossed lovers is a carnal, cruel and corset-filled masterpiece of French realism. Set in the notoriously dingy backstreets of Paris in the late 1800s, Thérèse lives a life of servitude and desperation. After being married off to her sickly cousin in an arranged marriage, Thérèse’s melancholy is marred by the arrival of Laurent, her husband’s friend, with whom she begins an illicit affair. Dangerously in love, their selfish passions unite in a hatred for Thérèse’s husband, which eventuates his cruel and brutal murder at the hands of damaged lovers. Tickets: adult $49.90, Member $49.90, concession $44.90, youth <25 $32.90, group 6+ $44.90. To book: www.glasshouse.org.au , call 02 6581 8888.

Renal service holds memorial A MEMORIAL service to remember and honour patients of the Hastings Macleay Renal Service was held this week at the Uniting Church in Port Macquarie. The memorial day is an initiative of the Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) Renal Supportive Care Service that commenced 12 months ago. The Renal Supportive Care Team is led by Nephrologist Dr Mohan Vattekad and includes a Clinical Nurse Specialist, Dietitian and Social Worker. The service is a collaboration between the Renal and Palliative Care Services and is designed for patients who decide dialysis may not be the appropriate pathway for them, and for those who are on dialysis but continue to have severe symptoms and poor quality of life. Due to the regularity and length of treatments that patients with renal disease go through, there is often a strong bond formed between patients, their families and staff. The Renal Memorial Service provided an opportunity for families and staff to pause together and remember patients who have passed away. MNCLHD Renal Supportive Care Nephrologist Dr Mohan Vattekad said the purpose of the Memorial Service was to support the families and friends of past patients in their grieving process. “The Memorial Service also provides an opportunity to honour and celebrate the unique relationship that develops between our staff and patients and their families.” MNCLHD Renal Supportive Care Clinical Nurse Specialist Nicole Wilson said the service was very touching. “The family members I spoke to all said how beautiful the service was and how pleased they were to be a part of it,” Ms Wilson said. “They really appreciated the opportunity to remember and honour their loved one, alongside the staff who had helped to look after them during their time with the Renal Service. “We would also like to acknowledge the kind donations from the wider community who made this day special, including members of the Kala Rava Choir, Orchids by Andrew Young, Dianne Dunkley the Uniting Church staff who were so accommodating and the Church volunteers who put on a lovely morning tea for us all.”

Qld’s loyalty card expires THIS year’s State of Origin series can’t end soon enough for Broncos’ coach Wayne Bennett. The supercoach is used to the high toll Brisbane pays during the rep season, but that does not make it any easier to swallow. The Broncs fell to their second loss in a row when going down to the Roosters last weekend (Round 13). In Round Six, without the Origin burden, the Broncos romped home against the same opposition 32-8. This weekend they have the Rabbitohs, who are coming off a bye and a couple of losses. The problem for Bennett is mental fatigue – his top players having to get back to their A game after giving so much to Origin and also knowing that for most there will be another two games to go. So although the next SOO game is a week and a half away, it will still be playing on the minds of team members. And what of Origin – well at least Your Local Independent got that one right.

For too long NSW have been their own worst enemies – believing they had the game won before kick-off. Arrogance (self-belief) is a necessity in top sport. But when you display that along with a disrespect for your rivals, calamity is just around the corner. This time around the Blues were more subdued, even after winning. Meanwhile Queensland’s loyalty card has had its day. They need several changes. They also need Slater in the side – but where does Boyd go to? OK, back to this weekend’s games. Full card of eight games. A couple of the home games are ‘away’ and there’s a game on Monday. Good luck! Sharks v Storm (Thursday, June 8, 7.50pm, Southern Cross Stadium, Cronulla): Great game to start the round. Sharks have the luxury of a bye last weekend, while the Storm cantered through the Knights. Melbourne will be tired.

Sharks at home. Still a bounce of the ball. • Your Local Independent tips: Sharks Sea Eagles v Knights (Friday, June 9, 6pm, Lottoland, Sydney): Manly are hot at the moment and edged out the Raiders last weekend. Newcastle will keep doing it tough. • Your Local Independent tips: Sea Eagles Broncos v Rabbitohs (Friday, June 9, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Danger game for the Broncos. Two losses in a row and there will be a taste of desperation amid tired bodies. The Rabbits can never be counted out. They will hurt you when you least expect it. The big card here is Bennett. He knows this win is crucial during the Origin series. • Your Local Independent tips: Broncos Titans v Warriors (Saturday, June 10, 3pm, Cbus Stadium, Gold Coast): A great first half against the Cows last weekend, but then the Titans fell away. They are on equal points with the Warriors and both teams must start their

run home from here. The Gold Coast is almost a ‘home’ game for the Warriors. However the Titans should have Peats back. And that is huge. • Your Local Independent tips: Titans Panthers v Raiders (Saturday, June 10, 5.30pm, Carrington Park, Bathurst): The two big NRL under-performers head out to Bathurst to do battle. The Panthers really came back into form smashing the Bulldogs last weekend while Ricky’s boys were again on the wrong end of a close one. Bookies have Panthers in front, but Raiders’ luck about to change. • Your Local Independent tips: Raiders Eels v Cowboys (Saturday, June 10, 7.30pm, TIO Stadium, Darwin): Another game away, this time in Darwin. Both teams coming off a win … but the only question is: Will JT be playing? We think he will be. • Your Local Independent tips: Cowboys Tigers v Roosters (Sunday, June 11, 4pm, Campbelltown Stadium, Sydney): Roosters are

crowing and the Tigers can’t buy a win. Although this game is at Campbelltown, a tough venue for any visiting team, the Roosters have stamped themselves as 8th – 12th June 2017 class this season. Thursday 8th June, 7.50pm, Southern Cross Group Stadium • Your Local Independent tips: Sharks vs Storm Roosters Friday 9th June, 6pm, Lottoland Bulldogs v Dragons (Monday, Sea Eagles vs Knights June 12, 4pm, ANZ Stadium, Friday 9th June, 7.50pm, Suncorp Stadium Sydney): Going on last weekend you Broncos vs Rabbitohs would tip the Dragons with daylight Saturday 10th June, 3pm, Cbus Super Stadium second. However the Dogs are Titans vs Warriors expecting Brett Morris, Josh Reynolds Saturday 10th June, 5.30pm, Carrington Park and James Graham all back on deck. Panthers vs Raiders Although that is a plus, the reports of Saturday 10th June, 7.30pm, TIO Stadium David Klemmer wanting out from the Eels vs Cowboys Dogs from next season won’t help. Sunday 11th June, 4pm, Campbelltown Stadium Dragons desperately trying to mount a Wests Tigers vs Roosters premiership campaign. Monday 12th June, 4pm, ANZ Stadium • Your Local Independent tips: Bulldogs vs Dragons Dragons
