You can help Elle “
There is financial strain due to the cost of the ridiculous amount of drugs and it has been going on for so long now
“
By NIKALA SIM A YOUNG woman’s only chance at a life of good health is in your hands. Elle Debreceney was only six years old when she was bitten by two ticks, at her family’s dairy farm in Comboyne, one on the eyelid and the other on the back of the neck. The ticks were removed with tweezers and within a day her eye was surrounded by bruising and redness. Within weeks she had body aches, poor eyesight, fatigue, small lumps under her skin and a mixture of other problems. When she turned 13, Elle took a course of antibiotics with dire consequences. “I fell very ill with seizures lasting up to 15 minutes - blacking out and passing out,” Elle says. Initially doctors thought the illness was linked to chronic migraines but when her health worsened Elle’s family sought further diagnosis. This confirmed Lyme disease, the result of a bacteria spread by ticks that feed on deer. “I became worse and fell more and more ill over a matter of two or three months,” Elle says. “This was a big change in my life – it changed very dramatically and very quickly.” Elle was unable to attend school and began
treatment which today sees her take between 90 and 96 tablets a day. These are a combination of neurological drugs, antibiotics and vitamins and minerals to support her immune system, minimise seizures and assist with pain relief. The crazy thing about Elle’s situation is the Australian Government does not acknowledge the existence of the disease in this country, her aunt and uncle Kylie and Darren Walsh say. “It’s pretty horrible the stuff she’s been through,” Kylie says. “Elle has seizures that leave her brain basically scrambled for a good 15-20 minutes, her speech slurred and vision blurry. “Her school was wonderful in trying to accommodate Elle’s battle with the disease however, there came a time that they couldn’t deal with the seizures - they were so unpredictable and violent. “Elle is one of four kids - so there is financial strain due to the cost of the ridiculous amount of drugs and it has been going on for so long now.” There will be no end to this financial stress until Elle is healed, Kylie says. And that relies upon an oncology treatment available in Malaysia and Germany. • Continued Page 3

Elle’s health is in your hands
Port Macquarie surveyor Frank O’Rourke is in opposition to the sale and privatisation of the NSW Land Titles Registry
Registry sale warning By NIKALA SIM LOCAL surveyors warn that the NSW Government’s propoal to sell the Land Titles Registry will come at a great cost to the state. Professionals from the Hastings and Macleay travelled to Sydney to join 300 others in protest of the sale of the NSW Land Titles Registry. Their concern is that the sale would result in data breaches, price hikes and a loss of institutional knowledge. Port Macquarie surveyor Frank O’Rourke said the current safety and security of land and property information was guarded by a State Government department with this as its sole purpose. “If the Land and Property Information service is sold to an overseas or private company then their prime motivation will be profit – not the maintenance of the privacy of the system. “Whoever buys it will buy a monopoly and without doubt costs will go up.” The Land Titles Registry defines the legal ownership and boundaries of land parcels throughout NSW, both private and public, and records changes as they occur. The community, business and government rely on this information for a variety of purposes including land management, conveyancing,
property development, investment, local planning, state economic and social development and historical research. The government has a commitment not to increase existing costs by more than the CPI for the next three years, Mr O’Rourke said. “But they haven’t said that other fees and costs won’t be introduced.” This was already happening to make the sale more attractive, Mr O’Rourke said. “Some of the costs are brand new and without a doubt there will be more.” The large initial windfall of $2.2 billion from the sale would be at the expense of the $130m the NSW Government currently receives from the land and title search fees associated with more than 200,000 property and land transactions that take place each year. President of the Institution of Surveyors NSW Inc Michael Green said the Land Registry is a vital, sensitive service that must be kept in public hands. “We are opening up millions of private records and giving them to a commercial operator that will be naturally driven by profits - can we be sure that data will remain protected?” he said. Evidence from other countries with privatised systems indicate a dramatic increase in the cost of title surveys, Mr Green said. “This will mean that home-owners will have
to bear the costs at a time when it is already incredibly expensive to buy or sell a property or land. “In addition, a loss of skills will come when we see hundreds of dedicated and experienced data managers, who as current employees are already at risk of termination after the initial four-year period, leave the Registry. “With them will go the protection that has been built to protect this highly sensitive data from falling into the wrong hands.” The sale of the NSW Land Titles Registry was serious business but this is one thing that shouldn’t be sold off, Mr O’Rourke said. “A lot of people don’t realise this that they have a stake in this. “My problem is the chief motivation for it existing at the moment is to guard integrity. “The registry is working very efficiently at the moment with very good staff. “Hastings and Macleay residents could see the cost of moving homes increase if the proposed sell-off goes through. “We are effectively pawning off the crown jewels of the land titles system in New South Wales and Hastings and Macleay will lose out.” The $2.2 billion from the proposed sale would fund two sports stadiums in Sydney.
• From Page 1 Elle’s uncle, Darren, says the family watched a show about Lyme disease on 60 Minutes, and it was frightening. “The scary thing is our government doesn’t acknowledge it so it is left up to minorities to help out.” Hence the reason for a donation of $1000, from their Hill Street Store customers in Port Macquarie, to Elle’s gofundme campaign. Elle’s family are seeking to raise $20,000 towards the ground-breaking treatment which will cost between $20,000 and $25,000. This does not include flights, accommodation and other costs associated with two trips overseas. “I am quite scared and nervous - there are so many emotions there is no word for how I feel,” Elle says. At JB Oncology, in Johor Baru, Elle will undergo two rounds of a 10-day treatment with a four-week break in between. On two occasions her body will be slowly heated to 42 degrees, kept there for one hour, then slowly brought down to body temperature. At the same time she will receive an intravenous cocktail of antibiotics, vitamins and minerals. The rest of the treatment will focus on recovering Elle’s immune system to her preLyme disease-state. “The Borrelia bacteria hides inside the cells and all through the organs so this will boil it out,” Elle says. “To undertake a cancer treatment is nervewracking. “I have read a lot of information and studies and wasn’t sure we wanted to go but every procedure has positives and negatives and in this case the pros outway the cons. “I just want to get better that is the main thing.” There are hundreds of people in the community with Lyme Disease, Elle says. “I think it’s pretty ridiculous and so upsetting to see people with the same disease but sicker than me and it makes me so upset. “I hope the government recognises it soon enough - it is here and very true. “Lyme disease is a nasty thing I would never wish it upon my worst enemy.” Despite rapidly growing numbers of Australians being diagnosed, the prevailing viewpoint within the Australian medical community is that there is no evidence of Lyme disease in Australia. This denial arises from a government-funded research project that failed to detect the common North American strain of the Borrelia bacteria in Australian ticks. As a result, there is no official statistic on the number of Lyme cases in Australia because it is not a notifiable disease. Therefore, treatment costs are borne by the individual and not funded by the government. Council’s water restrictions unnecessary PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council has introduced level one water restrictions for its residents as of January 30 with total water storage having been allowed to drop below 70 per cent. It has been stated that there is a greater demand on water use due to population growth. I have also heard that Council had not been able to pump from the Hasting River since October last year. This time period does not account for the large drop in water storage because the total storage can supply water for over two years without any pumping. It should be noted that the large pumps installed to pump from the Hasting River are the cause of the

problem, since under Council’s licence agreement these pumps can only be used under exceptional water flow conditions in the Hasting River. These exceptional water flows do not always occur. However, it should be noted that Council has an older licence to pump water using smaller pumps which were used prior to the construction of the Cowarra Dam. I challenged Council, two years ago, about this very same issue. It was only after the conservative level one water restrictions set at 80 per cent storage that the Executive involved in water management employed the smaller pumps to maintain storage in the dams. By lowering the trigger level from
80 per cent to 70 per cent, before restrictions are enforced, Council is again restating that there is insufficient water in storage to meet the increased growth in population. Again, I wish to challenge Council - by using their smaller pumps it is possible to pump water from the Hastings River without the pumping restrictions imposed on the much larger pumps. It must be recognised that before the Cowarra Dam was installed Port Macquarie had only 20 per cent of the water storage capacity that it has today. At that time the smaller pumps were sufficient to maintain the water storage in the smaller dam to supply the residents in Port Macquarie. Since the water storage capacity has been increased to five times,
and the population growth has only doubled, it is either poor planning or inept management that allowed pumps to be installed that are too big for the seasonal water flows in the Hastings River. Smaller pumps can be used to overcome this problem and thus allow for adequate water supply to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council residents without restrictions. Council must remember that they are employed to service the need of its residents. They are not employed to dictate their lack of ability to service the existing residents while pushing ahead with planning for future residential growth. Ray Wilkie Yippin Creek

WOW! What a busy week! I feel like we are powering through 2017 and it’s going to be a case of ‘hang on for the ride!’ All the networking groups are kicking off for the 2017; Port Macquarie and Macleay Business Chambers hosted their first meetings last week. I attended both meetings and I was impressed! Highly impressed; with the Macleay Valley Business Chamber and how their meeting was run. Not only was there a warm welcome and good food, it was: informative, well organised and great value for money. It was also a great representation of the working relationship the Chamber has with Kempsey Shire Council. Guest speaker Susannah Smith, Economic Sustainability Manager from KSC, spoke about the projects planned for the Macleay and how they would impact on the whole community. She also spoke about the importance of a close working relationship between the KSC, Chamber and the business community to secure economic stability and growth. The Port meeting… unimpressed! The finger food was scarce; we were obviously the wrong crowd. Most expensive wine and nibbles ever! The presentation? OMG! I felt like we were back in the election campaign! Please! We know where we’ve been…we want to know; where to from here!

Gift to Wauchope unit
Govt review of speed changes
HASTINGS Home Hospice has launched into its 27th year of hard work and fundraising by giving a $7552 gift to the Palliative Care Unit at Wauchope District Memorial Hospital. The support group, which dedicates itself to helping local residents with life-threatening illnesses, has funded shade awnings for the unit’s patient room balconies. The gift vastly improves the amenity of the north-facing balconies, particularly during the warmer months. Hastings Home Hospice President Lil Andrews said she was extremely proud of her small band of volunteers who made a big difference to the lives of the seriously ill. “Our volunteers are just simply wonderful,” Mrs Andrews said. “We’re a small group who work hard, but we also have the support of many good people who help us raise the funds.” Those supporters include the LUSC Friendship Quilters, Laurieton Haven Craft Group, Endeavour House, bowling and golf clubs, and generous individuals. “We do what we do because we have community support – it’s a team effort,” Mrs Andrews said. During the past 27 years, the support group’s volunteers have raised more than $260,000 which has helped purchase clinical equipment, such as hospital-standard beds for seriously ill people wanting to stay in their own home, as well as helping patients with costs associated with medicine and travel to clinicians. The funds have also helped improve patient amenity at the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute in Port Macquarie and the Wauchope Palliative Care Unit, which cares for patients from throughout the Hastings Valley. Palliative Care Nursing Unit Manager Mary Trotter said the ongoing support of the Hastings Home Hospice volunteers made a significant difference to her patients and their families.
MEMBER for Oxley Melinda Pavey has announced a review into a number of proposed speed zone changes along the Oxley Highway. In 2015, Roads and Maritime Services, in collaboration with the Centre for Road Safety, completed a route safety review of the Oxley Highway. To reduce the incidence and severity of road crashes on the highway, safety initiatives including speed reductions are being implemented. “Last year a reduction in the speed limit was announced for a 40-kilometre section of the highway between Long Flat and Walcha, from 100 km/h to 70 km/h and 80 km/h,” Mrs Pavey said. “There was significant community objection to the proposed change which is why we are now gathering more traffic data to further examine the proposed changes, including the reduction on this section. “A range of options are being considered with the aim of improving safety for all motorists while minimising impact on regional tourism. “The NSW Government is funding the delivery of vital road improvements along the 514 kilometre Oxley Highway. We are delivering what these communities expect– with a number of projects now under way or currently in planning.” The NSW government has committed $60m to improve safety and travel times on the Oxley Highway. Mrs Pavey said work on the first of these projects started in the Oxley electorate last year with improvements to drainage, road resurfacing, five pull-over bays and installation of emergency satellite phones. Plans for the Wauchope Main Street are also progressing. Roads and Maritime is working with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to finalise the design, with work expected to start this year.

‘60s friendships still strong Some have “ done so many
“
fabulous things with their lives but it’s really all about friendship, maintaining contact and enjoying old times By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC
DENISE Taylor remembers a school classroom that was vastly different to those that students returned to recently. “We had no television at all at school and most people didn’t have televisions in their homes either,” she recalls. “I know when my family got a television I had just finished year 10, and where I lived we were the only people who had one. So on a Sunday night we would have people over to watch ‘Bonanza’.” Denise’s walk down memory lane has been sparked by a call for former students of Kempsey High School (1962 – 1967) to attend a reunion at the Seabreeze Hotel in South West Rocks on March 3, 4, and 5. Denise is one of the organisers. “In our generation we have seen such a change in technology and in the way that education is taught now, it’s amazing,” Denise said, continuing her ‘memory lane’ stroll. “Computers weren’t even heard of back then. In our time there was a lot of writing, a lot of taking notes… it was much more about listening to the teacher and reading actual books, and not computers.” Now, students have almost every answer at the click of a button. Music was as popular back then as it is now. “We did listen to music at school because we were in the time of Elvis and the Beatles and they were very popular at school,” Denise said. “There would be dances held at South West Rocks called ‘stomps’.” Leisure time may not have been too different to how it is spent today. “Myself and a lot of people came off farms so we would spend the weekends and afternoons helping out on the farm,” she said. “The ones who lived in town would play a lot of sport and of course being a coastal area, there were a lot of keen surfers. Some of our classmates are still very keen surfers today.” This reunion will be the fifth, since 1992,
Kempsey State High School 1967 Prefects (above). Some faces from the school reunion in 2012
for Kempsey High students of that era. “It’s been 50 years since some of us did the HSC,” said Denise. “This will be our fifth reunion, our last one was five years ago and around 120 people showed up.” Times have certainly changed since Denise

and her classmates walked the halls of Kempsey High, but there are also things that haven’t changed a bit. “The people that come to our reunions are still the same people,” Denise said. “I think that’s what has kept them coming back. The first one
(in 1992) was probably a little different because you hadn’t seen a lot of people since school but since then the people who keep coming back are the people who want to continue to catch up and maintain some sort of contact with their school friends. “Some have done so many fabulous things with their lives but it’s really all about friendship, maintaining contact and enjoying old times. “We were a close knit group, which is why I think we have been able to have five reunions and have such a good turn out,” said Denise. “It just happens to be one of those school groups where we did get on really well.” Denise said the reunion was open to anyone who attended the school from 1962 - 1967, whether it was for six years, one year, or one week. The three-day reunion will be held at the Seabreeze Hotel on March 3 and 4 from 6pm and March 5 from lunch time. Let’s get ready to stomp! By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC IT may be messy, but the Bago Grape Stomp is one of the most enjoyable experiences you’ll ever have. One of the Mid North Coast’s most popular annual events, the Bago Vineyards Grape Stomping Competition, is getting ready for harvest. “People just love the experience,” said Ian Adams, sales and marketing manager at Bago Vineyards. “Everybody loves it. A lot of people look forward to it and people come back year after year. “We get a lot of people from all over who have been coming for years.” The Bago Stomp has been running for 19 years. “It’s a real highlight here at Bago,” Ian said. “It’s grape picking season at the moment, so we are out here picking grapes just like a lot of the other wineries in the area. The Stomp is a real celebration of the grape picking season.” Stomp competitors simply put their names down, which are later drawn and the stomping begins. “There will be two people in each half barrel and they will stomp 10kg of grapes in 60 seconds,” Ian explains. “From there we pour

THE Mid North Coast Refugee Support Group will hold a protest vigil this Friday, February 10, to voice support for the Refugee Council of Australia’s #SafetyforAll and Getup’s #BringthemHere! campaigns. Last week, a coalition of over 70 organisations and community groups from around Australia, wrote an unprecedented open letter of concern regarding the humanitarian crisis that Australia has created. Mid North Coast Refugee Support Group Chair Lava Kohoupt said the coalition, led by the Refugee Council of Australia, had come together to call for an immediate evacuation of the offshore detention camps on Nauru and Manus islands in Papua New Guinea. The joint statement comes after a week of chaos regarding the possibility of a US resettlement deal, she said. “Multiple conflicting statements, regarding the fate of the hundreds of men, women and children trapped in limbo, have been released leaving people in these centres in a state of confusion and anxiety.” Asylum seeker Naeem Bangash at Manus Island Detention Centre is one of many to post his thoughts on social media. “I strongly appreciate the Australian general public for their support and struggle to close the notorious offshore centres down,” he said via the Mates for Manus M4M facebook page. “They are well aware of the political treatment of these vulnerable people and moreover, they don’t want to be manipulated by the government for a useless motive that will bring no good to the name of Australia. “I salute you all for your sense of obligations towards this bad sore of Australia to cured now [sic].” The vigil will be held in the Glasshouse forecourt in Port Macquarie from 6.30pm. Aussie terms the long and short of it my
I DON’T mind eating out occasionally. My wife and I have eaten out at just about every restaurant in our home town. My only complaint is that they occasionally, no, make that often, use words that are obviously from another country, just to confuse us or to make them sound more important. I often ask my wife “what does this mean?” and she gives me a kick under the table. We went to a Chinese restaurant recently and they had short soup and long soup on the menu. Now I ask you – short soup and long soup. What are you to make of that? Soon after, by a total coincidence, I happened to read an article by Julia Robinson, researcher at the Australian National Dictionary Centre. Julia Robinson has an impressive reputation, so I will take her word as gospel. I don’t mind admitting that I am a terrible cook. I learnt from her that short soup and long soup are not words that come from China at all. They are Australian. Short soup sometimes gets the name Chinese wanton soup and long soup sometimes has the name Chinese noodle soup. Short soup contains wantons, which Julia describes in Oz Words as “a type of small dumpling by wrapping mall, flattened pieces of
LAURIE BARBER
noodle dough around a savoury filling”. Julia says the first evidence for both terms occurred in the 1880s. But I was interested in her comment that both terms are Australian. She commented that most of the restaurants’ customers were Chinese and “Australian drunks”. The Sydney Morning Herald explained the difference between the two soups on January 25, 2007, apparently in case you wanted to order some on Australia Day. Apparently, short soup refers to the short wanton and long soup refers to the long noodles. That it the only interpretation I can put on it. Chinese restaurants flourished throughout Australia a century ago, apparently even before Greek restaurants. The Greek restaurant in the place where
I lived a long time ago was run by a bloke, of Greek ancestry, called Jock. He now lives in Toowoomba. But I digress. My big dictionary takes up 14 pages to cover short. It had everything else in small type, from short sauce to shortcoming and a few rude words that you don’t want to know about. I’m not saying short soup wasn’t there; just that I got sick of looking through the pages of small type. Incidentally, while I’m covering short, did you know that short can also mean “cut off”? GA Wilkes in his book A Dictionary of Australian Colloquialisms talks about “short of a sheet of bark” and “a chop short of barbecue”. He even mentions “a few sandwiches short of a picnic” bit I couldn’t find short soup or long soup. The Collins dictionary says “someone who is short is not tall”. That’s a big help. During my research I discovered that in 1909 two “revenue officers” called to a Chinese restaurant in Hobart and asked for short soup. They were supplied with several bottles of ale. Short soup was apparently a code for sly grog, or the Chinese proprietor hadn’t learnt English. The proprietor was charged with running a sly grog operation. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Charles Sturt University, has limited positions and expressions of interest are called for both mentor and mentee positions. The second program, Free Thinkers, will empower, educate and encourage young women aged 16 to 25 years. HBWN President Kelly King said the two new programs were significant and valuable additions to the group and its members. “We were thrilled to launch our calendar

THE latest report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare on Cancer in Australia 2017 shows significant room for improvements in access and outcomes in rural and remote areas. David Butt, Chief Executive Officer of the National Rural Health Alliance said that while the report shows overall that the death rates for cancer in Australia continue to fall, this finding does not hold up across rural and remote communities. “Sadly, the fact that new diagnoses of all cancers is lowest in very remote areas isn’t a good thing,” Mr Butt said. “Rather, it means people are being diagnosed later, which is why we also see higher death rates in these areas. “Later diagnosis means fewer treatment options are available and those that are available require more invasive intervention. It also means that many people have to travel significant distances to major cities for treatment – away from the support of family and friends and adding to the cost of treatment. It also compounds the feeling of dislocation at what is already an extremely stressful time. “There is some good news, as we are seeing lower rates of death due to melanoma, so the messages are getting out about the importance of using sunscreen and having regular skin checks. “The most recent data available shows that while 13.0 per cent of adults in major cities smoke daily, 16.7 per cent and 20.9 per cent do so in inner regional and outer regional/remote areas respectively. “We still have a lot of work to do to reduce smoking rates in rural and remote communities, which we know is closely linked to cancer diagnoses, as well as affecting the success of treatment for cancer and other illnesses. “We also need to work harder to encourage women into screening for cervical cancer – one of the most easily treated of cancers if detected early.”

Parents best to help bullied kids
Dr Gillespie inspects the language app in action at St Joseph’s Preschool in Laurieton
Preschool language program THERE’S less than a month to go for preschools and child care centres in our area to sign-up for a popular language learning program the Coalition Government is rolling out nationally for the first time. Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said the Coalition’s Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA) program allows preschool children to learn one of seven languages – Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, Indonesian, Spanish, Italian, Arabic or French – using tablet apps and fun, play-based learning. “Local preschools and child care centres are running out of time to sign up for the ELLA program before applications close at the end of February,” Dr Gillespie said. “The program is expanding across the country in 2017 and we’re expecting more than 30,000 children to take part so I want to make sure local kids aren’t left behind. “I’m urging preschools and child care
centres to head to www.ella.edu.au to sign up. “It’s fantastic to see, firsthand, children recognising different sounds of a language other than English and having a great time while they’re at it. “The feedback we’ve seen across the country has been overwhelmingly positive and the program is a unique opportunity.” Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham said after a successful two-year trial the Coalition Government had invested $15.7 million to make the ELLA program available to preschools across the country. “More than 1000 preschool services have already applied for ELLA in 2017 and I encourage others to take advantage of this unique educational opportunity,” Minister Birmingham said. Applications close on February 26 at 5pm. For more information and to submit an application, visit www.ella.edu.au.
Numeracy check for schools THE Turnbull Government has announced an expert group of principals, teachers, speech specialists, academics and researchers will progress the staged implementation of a nationwide phonics assessment, and the development of a numeracy check. Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham said the short assessments of Year 1 student’s literacy and numeracy skills are backed by evidence and will provide early identification of those students who are behind so they can be targeted with interventions before the achievement gap grows. Minister Birmingham said following three significant national and international reports in 2016 that showed Australia’s education performance, at best plateauing and at worst declining, and the gap between our brightest and struggling students widening, this reform was deliberately targeted at those students who start school “behind the pack”.
“The time to act is now if we’re going to turn around our declining national and international education results. We can’t afford to wait any longer,” Minister Birmingham said. “The Turnbull Government is acting. While we work with states and territories on our reform agenda, it is important that these evidence-based reforms are ready to hit the classroom as soon as possible once new agreements are finalised and this expert panel will ensure that is the case. “These highly regarded academic, health and education experts will drive these reforms, establish an implementation plan including an initial pilot to be scaled up to an early years’ skills check for all Australian students. They will consider the frequency, timing and core skills to be assessed prior to reporting by mid-2017.” The Terms of Reference for the panel can be found at http://docs.education.gov.au/documents/ terms-reference-expert-advisory-panel-nationalliteracy-and-numeracy-check-year-1-check.
AS thousands of students across the country are starting high school, new figures reveal nearly one in four young people have experienced bullying in the past 12 months, and were most likely turn to their parents for support. A new survey by digital youth mental health organisation ReachOut revealed that 23 per cent of 14–25 year-olds have experienced bullying in the past 12 months. The highest incidence of bullying occurred at school (52 per cent), followed by the online space (25 per cent) and the workplace (25 per cent). ReachOut CEO Jono Nicholas said starting high school can be a tricky time for students and their parents. “There is a new environment to contend with, more students, developmental changes and a bigger workload. “It can be a time of upheaval for friendships, where young people making the transition to high school may lose touch with close friends and navigate new friendships. “Sometimes the line between regular friendship issues and bullying becomes blurred. “We know that bullying is something that young people are really concerned about – last year record numbers turned to ReachOut for support and information on bullying, with 138,000 visits to our bullying-related content. “The reality is that bullying can happen wherever young people are – whether online or offline.
“This is why we focus on equipping young people and their parents with support and tools so they can be ready to deal with the behaviour. “We want young people who experience bullying and their parents to know that you don’t have to put up with it – there are things you can do right now to address bullying behaviour.” The survey revealed that of the young people who experienced bullying, around half sought help, with parents the most likely place young people will turn to for help with bullying at 48 per cent, followed by peers (33 per cent). “Young people who experienced bullying were most likely to turn to a parent for support – so it’s really important that parents have the tools and resources to respond when this occurs.” Mr Nicholas said that for the first time new ReachOut resources will be available to help parents support their teenagers through experiences of bullying. “Bullying can make young people feel ashamed or powerless to act, anxious, stressed or guilty – as though it’s their fault.” “This is why we encourage young people to tell a trusted adult like a parent when they are experiencing bullying. “Sharing what’s going on will make them feel less alone, and will also allow them to feel supported in working through the experience.” To find out what you can do to address bullying right now, head to ReachOut.com/ bullying or ReachOut.com/parents.
REACHOUT’S tips for parents concerned about bullying: Get informed about the avenues for stopping bullying. You wouldn’t put up with bullying at work, so your child doesn’t have to put up with it at school or online. Schools have anti-bullying policies and are required to respond to bullying incidents. Social media providers are required to remove offensive content or you can contact the Children’s e-Safety Commissioner. Get to know the school principal and year adviser and ask them about their anti-bullying
policy – that way if incidents of bullying arise, it’s easy to raise it with them. Read up on how to contact social media providers to address cyberbullying and ensure you and your child know how to block, delete or report anyone who is upsetting them online. Make an action plan with your teen if they are experiencing bullying – ask for details, when and what is occurring, and how did it make them feel. Think about contacting the other child’s parents and address the issue between families.
REACHOUT’S tips for young people who are experiencing bullying: Know that you don’t have to put up with bullying. If it’s happening to you, tackle it early and don’t just hope it’ll go away. Talk to someone who can do something about it – like your parents, a teacher or principal – and ask them how they will respond. Get allies from outside where the bullying is happening – this could be through a job, volunteering, sport, music or other groups and online forums; or spending time with a different group. Making new friends can help you feel
better about yourself and more able to cope with difficult situations. Consider removing yourself from the environment – this may mean changing schools, spending time with a different group or leaving a job. When you see someone else being bullied, you can let them know they’re not alone. Write them a private message to let them know you’re thinking of them, invite them to sit with you, choose to be their partner in class or go for a walk with them. If it continues, report it to someone in authority.

Mental health boost
Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker (centre) announces the $300,000 funding for the Indigenous mental health support
MEMBER for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker has announced Federal Government funding of $300,000 to deliver the Aboriginal Mental Health Capacity Building Project in his electorate. Mr Hartsuyker said the funding would provide better support for Aboriginal people in our region experiencing very high levels of serious mental health problems. “Hospitalisation rates for mental health issues are almost twice as high for local Indigenous people compared to the non-Indigenous population. “This funding will help develop a specialised care model for Aboriginal mental health challenges,” Mr Hartsuyker said. “The program has been funded by the North Coast Primary Health Network, and will be delivered by Galambila Aboriginal Health Service in Coffs Harbour, in partnership with Werin Aboriginal Medical Service in Port Macquarie. “The Australian Government is committed to ongoing efforts to close the gap between Indigenous Australians and non-indigenous Australians.” The full project will deliver on a number of important outcomes for Aboriginal people in the region.
Survey vital in airing your views JUST before Christmas I distributed a survey throughout the Cowper electorate to allow North Coast residents to have their say and allow me to be more informed as to how I can better service our region. Thank you to everyone who has returned a survey to my office. There is still time to have input and I encourage every resident to complete the survey. It will only take a couple of minutes, and it will help me better meet the needs of the electorate. As local member I regularly seek the views of my constituents and this survey forms an important part of the communication process.

As usual, the Rocks turned on amazing weather, great surf conditions, and everyone I met at the event seemed to be having a marvellous time. It takes a huge amount of time and effort to successfully coordinate an event of this size, so the organisers and the entire

Macleay 2017 Young Citizen of the Year Drew Walsh, Citizen of the Year Sonya Murphy and Volunteer of the Year Frank Oakes
Awards to Macleay’s best citizens By NIKALA SIM MACLEAY’S Young Citizen of the Year is no stranger to accolades. Drew Walsh was honoured by the Order of Australia Association last year with The Lincoln Youth Community Service Award. And on the eve of Australia Day 2017, this outstanding young man was acknowledged for his leadership within his school and within agriculture, sport and scouts. Young Citizen of the Year, Drew is a true role model for his peers and has led workshops, for high school and primary students, on safe driving and passenger behaviour. Citizen of the Year went to Macleay Netball Association member of 32 years Sonya Murphy. Sonya has also volunteered much time to support the Smithtown Junior League Club, Lower Macleay Magpies Rugby League Club,
Kempsey Little Athletics and the Macleay Valley Diabetes Group. Every week for the past seven years, Frank Oakes has entertained residents of Vincent Court, Booroongen Djugun Aged Care Facility, Parklands Cottage, and the Kempsey Carers Group with his piano playing, and for this was acknowledged as Volunteer of the Year. Riding For The Disabled Kempsey-Macleay was awarded Community Group of the Year. Kempsey Shire Council Mayor Liz Campbell presented the awards with Australia Day Ambassador Nic Newling. “Our community benefits greatly from their tireless efforts, as they go out of their way to donate their time without seeking recognition,” Mayor Campbell said. “These awards are a chance for us to formally acknowledge them and say thank you.”

Coalition out to cut credit risks THE Coalition Government is acting to reduce the risk of consumers being unable to meet their basic needs due to repeated use of small amount credit contracts (SACC) or expensive consumer leases. The Government has accepted the key recommendations of the independent review into SACC laws. Key findings of independent review were that: • repeated borrowing in Australia is high with average SACC consumers taking more than three small loans each year which can result in debt spirals and is an indication of financial distress. • there is no cap on what consumer lessors can charge, resulting in high charges. Consumers of SACCs and consumers’ leases are often Centrelink recipients or have very low incomes with limited access to mainstream credit sometimes as a result of poor histories. Half of all consumer lease repayments are provided directly through Centrepay – Centrelink’s payment deduction system while the average gross income of SACC consumer is $35,702 per annum. It is important that access to emergency finance and consumer goods does not come at the price of worsening low income consumers’ financial circumstances. The key recommendations adopted by the Government include setting a cap that limits SACC and lease repayments to 20 per cent of a person’s income, as well as a cap on the prices lessors can charge. With the net income cap even consumers on the lowest income (single person on government allowance) will be able to access two concurrent $500 SACCs over one year and lease consumer goods to the value of $2071 over three years. This will enable access to emergency finance, while also allowing for the lease of a range of consumer

goods such as a 436L fridge, a 5.5kg top-load washing machine, a 14-place setting dishwasher, a 750W microwave and a 4kg clothes dryer. Our Government believes that the response strikes the right balance between protecting vulnerable consumers and minimising the regulatory burden on industry. It is intended that the changes will apply 12 months following the passage of the legislation through Parliament. Legislation will be introduced in 2017.
Kempsey improvements THE second half of Kempsey council’s 20161017 works program will focus on improving the condition of residential roads throughout the town. Resealing Middleton St, South Kempsey and Gamacks Lane are both nearing completion with the next phase of work planned for streets in West Kempsey. Using Super to Buy Property Everyone is talking about self-managed super funds (SMSF’s) these days and it seems its not just those over age 55. In fact, latest statistics show the average age of those setting up a SMSF has dropped to 48 years of age, previously 55 years of age about 5 years ago. http://thenewdaily. com.au/money/superannuation/2016/12/23/smsfowners-getting-younger-and-women-doingbetter/ SMSF’s are a popular vehicle to plan and provide for future wealth as they can be a flexible, tax effective structure helping you achieve your retirement goals. However, SMSF’s are not for everyone, among other things they require careful consideration prior to their establishment, constant review of investments and last but certainly not least regulatory compliance. Property in Super? When considering to purchase an investment property consideration must be given as to what entity to hold it in. What’s become appealing is that SMSF’s can borrow from a bank to purchase an investment property with the help of their existing superannuation savings. This needs careful consideration as a rental property in a SMSF has different rules and legislative requirements to if it were purchased personally outside of super. The simplest way to get all the information is to speak to an Independent SMSF Specialist Advisor before you buy the property to provide you with personalised advice on whether or not a SMSF is right for you

WEEKLY Chase the Sun return CHASE The Sun are about to live it up with their new single and live show in Port Macquarie. It’s been five long years since Sydneybased blues-funk-rock power trio Chase The Sun released new music or hit the road for any extended length of time. Ten years ago Chase The Sun burst onto the Australian blues and roots scene with a passion and fire little heard since the early ‘70s. They released two critically acclaimed albums that, at one time, were charting together at #1 and #2 respectively on the iTunes blues charts. The trio then promptly went into semiretirement for four years, popping their head up for the occasional hometown show and festival appearance. The pressures of life on the road didn’t appeal to everyone in the band and an act many thought poised for greatness went into creative hiatus. Live It Up showcases the band’s many strengths - from the blistering guitar work of front man Jan Rynsaardt, one of the best guitarists and most passionate performers around, and with a genuine modesty unsurpassed in the blustery

blues-rock scene, to the driving, punchy, funkladen rhythm section of drummer Jon Howell and bass guitarist Ryan Van Gennip. Summer 2017 sees the much-admired band back in business on both fronts. After being handpicked in late 2016 as the support for American hard rockers Black Stone Cherry for their April 2017 Australian tour, Chase The Sun are happy to announce a new single ‘Live It Up’ and a large run of East Coast tour dates stretching from Melbourne to Cairns, including Port Macquarie. The new single, and album to follow, should go some of the way to satisfying the band’s army of loyal supporters who’ve been waiting a long time for some new music, while also likely to earn the band some new fans along the way. Chase The Sun will be playing at Finnian’s Irish Tavern, Port Macquarie on Friday, February 24, from 8pm. Entry is free. WAUCHOPE’S Top Hat Gallery will present ‘Banquet of Colour’ by exhibiting artists Kiata Mason and Carly Hollis from Friday (February 10). Kiata Mason is an established artist who has just completed her Masters of Fine Arts in Drawing from the National Art School, Sydney. She has had both solo and numerous selected group exhibitions since 2005 and has been chosen as a finalist in many major art competitions. She is based at Lake Cathie where she now cares for her grandmother. This has given her an opportunity to paint the interior scenes and objects she has been familiar with for many years. Kiata says: “The objects I have painted are items that my grandmother Beatrice has collected from her travels overseas, having been an artist herself. Shells, paintings, sculptures and flowers talk of the past and are displayed with an eclectic and artistic eye, items that Beatrice has loved.” Carly is an emerging artist and mother to two young boys who keep her extremely busy however every spare moment she dedicates to improving her artistic ability. Picking up a paintbrush less than two years ago Carly quickly found her style using a mix of acrylics and resin, beautifully fusing these together, to create explosions of colour. “I paint colourful, abstract paintings using a variety of techniques and mediums … with many different layers adding depth and texture,” she said.

A LONG-STANDING local club has been chosen to run a national round of its sport. The Port Macquarie Kart Racing Club will host Round 4 of the Rotax Pro Tour between June 16 and 18. Presented by International Karting Distributors, the Rotax Pro Tour is a 6 round series which visits NSW, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. Drivers compete for the prestige of qualifying for the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals and to represent Australia at the worlds, with winners in each category receiving a ticket to the world titles. The Port Macquarie club might be competitive on the track, but off the track it works on the premise of supporting one another, says President Craig Rees. “The people are great,” Craig says. “Everyone is very family-oriented and bends over backwards to help each other get out on the track and win.” Recent times have seen a slow and steady increase in numbers, with people travelling from up and down the coast to attend race meets at the track at Lake Innes. Atlantic Oils Ladies Trophy Dunlop Kartsport KA3 Junior 2017 second place winner Maddison Hill travels up from Newcastle to participate. “I’ve been racing for three years and coming up to the Port track for the last two,” Maddison says. “My parents own two Autobarn stores and my twin brother got into it then I got into it. “I love the adrenaline and the friends I have made.” The 15-year-old also loves the opportunity to use her sport for good and last year was crowned Miss Karting Charity Princess for raising $14,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Safety is a priority with the club and Maddison wears a fireproof race suit, race

made to the chassis and they all need to be right to win a race, Doug says. One young club member who is obviously getting that right is 11-year-old Kai Morgan, who has been racing for nearly two years. Kai came third in the Northern Zone Series One last weekend and won the Port Macquarie Kart Racing Junior Club Championship last year. He fell in love with the sport after watching it on youtube and TV. “It looked really fun so I wanted to have a go,” Kai says. The Port Macquarie boy spends nearly every weekend practicing his skills at the club track on the Cowarra Access Road off Burrawan Forest Drive at Lake Innes. “You’ve got to practice a lot and race a lot and then you get better,” Kai says. “I do heaps of laps and each time I race I aim for my personal best and try and get that.” Lighthouse Beach Milk Supply owner Rick Wilson has known people in the club for the last two decades. “The racing skills that are brought on board are phenomenal,” Rick says. “Go kart racing improves motor skills and judgement and safety is paramount here - the staff and club put on a really good event.” “They push safety, safety, safety - just get out there and race.” To get involved contact club President Craig Rees on 0488 233 161 or Brett Hancey on 0409 562 299. Smooth sailing for Race 5 RACE Five of the Port Macquarie Sailing Club’s summer series was held on Sunday in a north easter with a strengthening run-in tide, making for smooth, easy sailing. The catamarans were led home by Frank O’Rourke on Dino on Yardstick, followed by Tony Kuhn on Stella, Rob Barwick on Drift, and Dave Winter on Spica. Stella took the win on handicap, just over a minute ahead of Dino, who was just over a minute ahead of Drift, and finally, Spica. The monohull division again saw a lot of new faces. Regular, Terry Howard in Ratz, sailed well to be first on yardstick. He was then followed by Simon Gandy and Tyler Korvemaa in Simon’s daughters Flying 11, Flying Fish, Stuart Symons and Glen in Jupiter, and Phillip and Blake in their first race on their own in Sunset. The handicap places were the same as Yardstick.
