Flight plan anger

A group of angry residents rally against the proposed expansion of the Australian International Aviation College at Kempsey Airport and the lack of community consultation from Kempsey Shire Council

By SUE PATERICK

MORE than 130 people attended a recent community meeting at the Kempsey Macleay RSL Club, where a committee was formed to raise concerns and increase community awareness over the expansion of a flying college at Kempsey Airport. According to a spokesperson for the Save

Kempsey Airport Committee Adam Ulrick the public was outraged with the total lack of community consultation and transparency by Kempsey Shire Council (KSC). He felt more people needed to understand what was being proposed because the flying college’s flight path covered a wide area of the Macleay Valley, not just Aldavilla.

Page 3: A real local hero

He is calling for interested residents to attend a public meeting at Council chambers on Wednesday, March 15 at 2pm with the Northern Joint Regional Planning Panel. Council is the owner of the land at Aldavilla where the airport is located and where the Australian International Aviation College (AIAC) currently operates.

However, Council is not the decision maker for the AIAC’s new Development Application (DA) for the construction of buildings and works related to its proposed expansion. The Northern Joint Regional Planning Panel will decide if the $18 million project is to go ahead. • Continued Page 6

OAM for dedicated nurse Honour for global work By SUE PATERICK

Above: Nurse Elizabeth Bowell OAM has just returned from a visit to Red Cross headquarters in beautiful Geneva in Switzerland Right: Elizabeth with a colleague on a mission with the Australian Red Cross in South Sudan

Every mission is different and there are always people in need. It’s hard work but incredibly satisfying knowing that mostly we get to make a bit of a difference.

NURSE Elizabeth Bowell OAM grew up in the Macleay Valley, but her bravery and dedication to improving the health of people in remote regions has taken her around Australia and the world. The daughter of John and Fay Bowell, Elizabeth didn’t feel comfortable when she received her OAM on Australia Day, January 26. She was given the award for service to remote nursing and to international natural disaster healthcare assistance. “I was humbled,” she said. “But I work with so many colleagues that do the same as me in either remote or international regions so it was awkward to be singled out.” Elizabeth has worked as an International Health Delegate for the Red Cross since 2004 and has been to places like Nepal, Liberia, South Sudan, The Philippines, Vanuatu and Haiti. Her missions have taken her to countries struck by earthquakes, typhoons, floods, tsunamis and outbreaks of diseases such as Ebola and cholera. In 2015 she was awarded a Florence Nightingale Medal for courage and devotion to victims of armed conflict or natural disasters. In 2007 Elizabeth received an Aurora Award for an outstanding contribution to remote health, and in 2006 she received a Meritorious Award from the Australian Red Cross. A list of impressive achievements for a girl from Kempsey, who wasn’t quite sure of what career to pursue after high school. Fate stepped in when a few friends decided to study nursing at Newcastle and Elizabeth thought it sounded like a good idea. Fast forward to the late 1990s and she became head of the John Hunter Hospital’s Emergency Department. Another chance conversation with two people who worked as remote nurses in Aboriginal communities saw her lured to outback Australia. “They opened my eyes to another life and remain my great friends,” Elizabeth said. “Aboriginal health is challenging because they often have several co-morbidities to consider, so remote nurses have a broader scope of practice.” According to Elizabeth, remote nursing is also a springboard to overseas work because it teaches you about living and working in remote regions and with limited resources.

In fact, it was while working as a remote nurse that she met other nurses who had worked overseas. Her first mission with the Australian Red Cross was in 2004 to Banda Aceh in Indonesia after a tsunami. “It seemed pretty exciting at the time,” Elizabeth said. “Now I feel privileged every time I’m asked to go overseas because there is a huge vulnerable population out there.” At first Elizabeth attended natural disasters but these days she mainly works in countries

suffering epidemics. “In Africa there is cholera in one country, or several countries, all the time,” she explained. “Every mission is different and there are always people in need. “It’s hard work but incredibly satisfying knowing that mostly we get to make a bit of a difference.” Each mission lasts up to three months and then Elizabeth comes home to paradise to relax in a small seaside town near Byron Bay. She visits her parents in Kempsey when she can and still has a soft spot for the Macleay

Valley. “It’s a beautiful place,” she added. After a short stint at home, Elizabeth is off again to do more remote work in Australia or go on another overseas mission. “I feel really, really lucky to have found nursing and the diversity it has given me,” she said.

Support the Herons Creek petition ON February 15, a second quarry in Herons Creek on State Forest Land was approved by the Northern Joint Regional Planning Panel in the face of strong community objection. The company planning to mine this land at Herons Creek submitted a very poor response to the planning panel’s previous demand for further information, yet the Development Application was approved anyway. The message was clear – it is very difficult to successfully oppose a development. The chairman of the Panel Garry West referred to a recent amendment to the Local Environment Plan, which was changed days before this application was lodged and permitted

Penalty rate cuts AUSTRALIAN Council of Trade Unions President Ged Kearney says that the reduction in Sunday penalty rates is “a bad day for working Australians”. I’ve got news for Ged; it’s an even worse day for small business. Just how badly will small business be affected? Take, for example, a fast food outlet in the Hastings that employs

extractive industries and agriculture on State Forest Land. He stated that he dealt with the current situation (LEP Amendment) and was not responsible for it (not quite his exact words). The message from the Council and the regional panel is one of legal impotence for the community in opposing developments even on State Forest Land and Crown Land, but it gets worse! In November, a Bill was passed by Niall Blair, Minister for Primary Industries, to make the exploitation of State Forest Land and Crown Land by the private sector, easier. It also takes away some Aboriginal rights in the process.

The process of putting this into effect will take place this year which can potentially affect between 33 per cent and 42 per cent of our state! State Forest Land always has been a commercial enterprise, but was intended to sustainably produce forest products forever. We need a more balanced legal framework which can make commonsense decisions for our community and you can get in touch with us to sign, or even get a copy, of our petition calling on council to disallow extractive (mining) industry on State Forest Land. You can also get involved by making a submission about these legislative changes via accessing the website of NSW EDO.

It is essential that the community uses political pressure to protect the environment for future generations. The Herons Creek community have shown amazing spirit and effort so please support them by signing our petition, and writing a submission or even a letter addressed to Niall Blair, and Lesley Williams, expressing concern for the Governance of Crown Lands and State Forests. Petitions can be collected from and returned to Nadine Rose, 9 Merrigal Road, Port Macquarie, or from the Three Rivers Greens Website. Mick Hall Convener, Three Rivers Greens

four casual workers every Sunday. The owner’s profit for the day will increase by $260 or $14,000 per year. Right? NO - dead wrong. For a start, there will be an additional $3800 to be paid in Company Tax and $1400 for GST – total $5200. But the biggest slug on small business profitability will come from the fact that the reduction in Penalty Rates will take $40,000 out of the Hastings economy every Sunday.

As this amount lost by lower income earners has been invariably spent in the small business sector, the effect will undoubtedly be that less business will be coming through the front door of every small business. I fail to understand the thinking that says that employers will need more staff. In fact, the opposite is true. Mike Dibbs Port Macquarie

TO the family of two adults and five children who left a pile of drink bottles, chip bags, tissues etc, both at the picnic shelter and edge of the road at Wall Reserve, North Haven on Sunday, February 12. Thumbs up TO Aaron and staff at Kempsey Macleay RSL for a great night at my birthday party. Nothing was too much trouble for them and the meals were awesome. Everyone had a great night.

Thumbs Up TO Larry and his bistro and bar staff who were involved in catering and service at my 70th birthday party on February 8. The food was outstanding, drawing praise from many of my 55 guests. 2017 is romping along at the speed of light it seems. I think it’s going to be a case of ‘put your big girl pants on and hang on for the ride!’ I love March! There are several reasons why, but first and foremost - it’s my birth month and 3 is my favourite number. Last week I got to celebrate my birthday. I had a few grand plans of how that celebration might look and did absolutely none of what I planned! I went for dinner with friends on my birthday and saw the amazingly talented band, Kallidad! Just wow! Absolutely brilliant! I had a lovely birthday. I was absolutely blown away with the birthday wishes I received over a week. You’ve got to love Facebook for how it connects family and friends on such occasions. I got this hilarious message from an old friend: “Happy birthday Old Girl. You know for a couple of years I thought you were someone stalking me from my old baseball club, and then Nobby (another school friend) explained!” OMG, I laughed so hard when I read this, I was crying! I have done many things in my 54 years, stalking? No, stalking is not one of them. Thanks for the laugh Muz! The piece de resistance? Being surprised with a nomination for the Hastings Heroines award. Totally unexpected. Thank you! All in all. A great week!

Lost wallet turns up By SUE PATERICK

FOUR years after losing his wallet while fighting a large bushfire at Toorooka, Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteer Owen Finch was shocked when it was returned last month. Even though he was just getting over a kidney transplant, Owen - Captain of the Aldavilla Rural Fire Brigade - was out battling the Toorooka blaze when his wallet must have fallen out of his back pocket. Knowing the general vicinity where the wallet was lost, Owen and his son, Les, went back and searched for it for several hours to no avail. The wallet contained $75, his driver’s licence, lots of cards - including an RFS card, and pictures of his grandchildren. “When we first went back to look for the wallet and couldn’t find it my heart fell,” Les said. In mid-February this year farmer Wayne Mainey was out checking his Toorooka property when he noticed something on the side of the road. He thought it was unusual so he stopped to check and found a weathered wallet covered in dirt and leaves. When Wayne and his wife, Patrice, went through the contents and spied an RFS card they contacted a friend, Paul Bourne - an RFS Lower North Coast Group Captain, who knew Owen. “It was pretty cool,” Patrice said. “And a group effort to find the wallet’s owner.” When they called Owen to inform him of their find, he was stunned and surprised. “To get my missing wallet back with all its contents still inside was so uplifting,” Owen said. “It’s really nice that there are such honest people in the world and I’d like to thank them.” After four years out in the elements Owen’s

wallet was naturally filthy. The photos of his grandchildren were ruined, his cards bent and the money dull and stained. The only thing missing was his RFS emblem, which Owen feels must have lost its glue and just fallen off. To commemorate his wallet’s amazing return, he intended on framing it as a reminder of Wayne and Patrice’s honesty and his own luck, So he cleaned it and put it outside to dry but the wallet went missing again. “It must have been thrown out or the dog got it,” Owen said. “And that’s a shame.” Still, feeling lucky after his wallet’s return Owen bought a $10 lottery ticket but didn’t win

anything. To ensure he never loses his wallet again Owen doesn’t carry anything in his back pocket while fighting fires anymore, preferring to keep his valuables in the top pocket of his RFS shirt. “That way I can feel my wallet and phone all the time,” he said. Owen has been a member of the RFS and a volunteer with the State Emergency Service for 28 years. He has served his community in both capacities even while undergoing kidney dialysis. So the finding and returning of his wallet is a fitting reward for such an unsung hero.

Summit brings plenty of vision

BEN Pettingill lost his sight at the age of 16 but this month the 21-year-old became the first blind person to compete in the most famous water skiing race in the world, the Southern 80. “Skiing in the 2017 Southern 80 as the first ever blind person to do so was an amazing experience. After completing the race, I now believe, more than ever, that no matter what your situation is in life and what challenges and obstacles are thrown your way, with limitless vision, anything is possible,” said Ben. Water ski racing is renowned to be one of the most dangerous sports in the world and Ben will share his story of courage at this year’s Luminosity Youth Summit, themed ‘Courage, Collaborate, Create’. Now in its fifth year, Luminosity brings an exciting line-up of presenters to Port Macquarie from July 19-21. Heroines are community inspiration

THE COWPER REPORT With Luke Hartsuyker

By NIKALA SIM ELEVEN women have been acknowledged for their work in unifying the Hastings community. The 2017 Hastings Heroines nominees were announced recently at the Hastings Business Womens Network International Women’s Day breakfast, in Port Macquarie. Sandy Mackenzie, Susan Rupert, Kayla White, Bianca Tuddenham, Melinda Renshaw, Tanya Simmons, Alison Neale, Lisa McLeod and Rihannon Mathieson were joined by Caitlyn Howard and Steph Clarke, who were nominated in the new 2017 Young Hastings Heroines category for women under the age of 21. Awards partner Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams said the 2017 nominees were an inspirational group of women. “It is fantastic to see the range of work these amazing women are doing in our community to promote unity amongst us,” Leslie says. “A strong and united community is of

Anger over expansion plan

• From page 1 According to Mayor Liz Campbell, Council’s decision making is only relevant in the drafting and signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which guides the terms of the land use and the flying college’s operations. At its February meeting KSC resolved to undertake a community awareness campaign to improve understanding of the operations and approvals required for the DA. Council also has a MOU in place for the flying college with a revised MOU addressing the operations of the proposed expansions. Council anticipates the revised MOU will reference a Noise Management Plan and will involve significant community consultation. The AIAC currently has 15 cadets training at its college from overseas and Australia who log about 191.25 flight movements over 12 months. If the new DA is successful there will 60 to 90 students logging from 11,475 movements (9000 day and 2475 night) to 17,212 movements (13,500 day and 3712 night) in 2017. In 2018 that number is set to increase with 120 to 150 students logging anywhere from 22,950 movements (8000 day and 4950 night) to

28,687 movements (22,500 day and 6187 night). The flying college’s DA defines a movement as one landing. KSC has clarified this statement saying one movement equals one flight, incorporating both take offs and landings. The DA does seem short on information about flight paths and time in the air. It does state that the routine daytime flighttraining times are between 6am and 6pm. However, night flying in winter, autumn and spring could run until 11pm, and midnight in the summer. The flying school intends on operating seven days a week. This level of activity in the once peaceful skies above the Macleay Valley has many residents worried and angry. Over 80 submissions have already been lodged against the AIAC’s expansion and an online petition has been started. “We are not against the flying school’s current operation,” Mr Ulrick said. “We are against it operating 18 hours a day, seven days a week and increasing its flights by 1000 per cent in 2018.”

The DA’s acoustic consultants assessed the potential aircraft noise and stated the development would not impact on surrounding townships, and ambient background noise would most likely mask any aircraft noise. “We dispute the content and conclusions of the noise assessment in the DA because it was not independent and was commissioned by the applicant using data supplied by the applicant to support the DA,” Mr Ulrick said. “We think the DA’s data is flawed and want an independent noise assessment done as we believe that ambient background noise, like singing birds, will not cover aircraft noise.” Apart from increased noise pollution, other concerns are air safety, privacy, selling off land to foreign interests and decreasing property values. However, a bigger flying college could increase Kempsey’s economic growth in some sectors. The DA states that in 2011-2012 each student, their friends and family contributed an average of $43,800 to the local economy. For more information attend the meeting on March 15 or check out the Save Kempsey Airport Committee’s Facebook page.

I KNOW first-hand how challenging it is to launch and run a business, so I admire anyone who is prepared to take a risk and have a go at starting their own small business. The Government has recently released a suite of new tools to make starting a business easier for young entrepreneurs. Government agencies including the ATO, ASIC, and the Department of Industry, Innovation, and Science partnered with young small business owners to form a Fix-It Squad. The squad explored how Government could help young Australians starting a new business and worked together to bring some helpful new products to life. One of the recommendations from the Fix It Squad was the First Business App, which has now been released by ASIC. The App includes a business health check, a ‘starting a small business checklist’, helpful case studies, and a section on developing business networks. The Plan & Start page on www.business.gov. au also includes valuable information on starting a business, including tips on setting and tracking goals, and a series of templates for developing business and marketing plans. New small business owners can now also receive additional support with the ‘New to Business Essentials’ email service. Starting after they register for their Australian Business Number, the service delivers timely, relevant and helpful government information at key points over 12 months. These tools build on the practical assistance the Government provides to small business, including the record-keeping tool for small business released last year by the ATO and the $20,000 instant asset write-off measure. Estimates say these initiatives will save the Australian small business community around 1.5 million hours a year, giving new business owners more time to grow their business or spend with their families. I encourage aspiring young entrepreneurs to check out these resources as they plan to launch a new business.

CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne

THE Minister for Regional Development and Deputy Leader of the Nationals Fiona Nash have announced the membership of the new NSW North Coast Jobs and Investment Packages (RJIP) Local Planning Committee. Liz Campbell has been appointed chair of the committee along with members from across the North Coast including George Cecato, Mark Holden, Ilze Jaunberzins, Guy Jones of Wauchope, Russell Logan, Bruce Moy of Taree, Neil Porter of Port, Murray Richardson and Alex Smith. These people are local leaders and have the important responsibility of representing their communities. This Local Planning Committee will nominate the local industry sectors the package will invest in. It will aim to help build the kinds of communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to, and investing in sustainable local jobs helps grow that kind of community. The Local Planning Committee will develop a Local Investment Plan that will list the forward-looking growth sectors which it thinks will create sustainable jobs for the future of the region. Once the Local Investment Plan is done, the applications from the local area can roll in. The Coalition Government’s aim is to create more jobs and export opportunities through this program in tandem with some of our broader employment programs. Our region is home to a range of strong, growing industries. For more information visit the Regional Jobs and Investment Package website at http://regional.gov.au/regional/regional-jobsinvestment-package/.

Top right: Roy Rose performs at the recent Auckland Meatstock Festival ... and the different flavours of Meatstock

A festival with taste By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

PORT Macquarie musician Roy Rose has played at many festivals, but there is one in particular that satisfies his appetite. The Meatstock Festival, organised by two Port Macquarie residents, is held in Sydney, Melbourne, and Auckland and combines meat and music to make the ultimate weekend of indulgence. “Normally people are just focused on the band at festivals, and here the music was to complement the food side of it,” said Roy Rose. “It was really chilled out, it wasn’t frantic at all like other festivals I’ve been to.” Roy Rose has also played at the Sydney Meatstock Festival and says he always looks

forward to the beef jerky. “You’ve got to like meat because you can smell it straight away when you get in there,” laughs Roy. “It’s just like char-grilled and slow-cooked beef smell. It smells like no other festival. What makes it stand out is the different blend of not just music, but really great quality food also. Everyone is in competition with everyone, so anything you eat there is going to be pretty good.” Lisa Willows from Port Macquarie’s Red Earth Records also dug her teeth into the weekend festivities in Auckland. “This is all about the meat,” Lisa said. “The music is actually second. There’s a bunch of stallholders and they all have big BBQ roasts and spits. Some of them have fireplaces on the

ground. It’s really quite amazing. “They also have an exhibitors’ area inside which has BBQs and a bucking bull, and delicious cocktails. They have a Barbeque, Butcher and Barber Wars in there so they have judging on the best slow cooked meats and the best beards. “It’s all about beards, it’s all about meat and it’s all about music.” The festival included other artists from Port Macquarie – graffiti artist Sigh and pop-fuzz garage band Royal Chant. Keeping our stories alive By NIKALA SIM HISTORY is in the making over tea and biscuits, at Panthers Port Macquarie. The club has partnered with SkillsLink Training to deliver the House of Many Stories oral history project. Facilitators Adrian Guthrie, Belinda Kennedy and Margaret Bailitis will gather paticipants’ stories, over an informal morning tea, then work to present these to the broader community. “We know that acknowledging people’s stories is very affirming,” Adrian says. “There is an important part of the population in the region whose stories are not being heard. “A lot of people here come from somewhere else. “In the old traditional family fabric there were always nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren who were hungry for these stories but quite simply that pattern is broken in our society today. “Typically people have kids and grandchildren all over the country and they are living in heaven in Port Macquarie. “But it is a little less heavenly than it would be if everyone was close together and we shared the things that people share in that generational relationship.” There are also many people who were born, and have lived, in the area all their lives, Margaret says. “One man who will join us got straight into telling me about his great grandfather being a convict. “He is enthusiastic about the opportunity to tell his many stories about the history of Port Macquarie. Luisa Licina is very grateful to have been invited to attend “You never know what tomorrow will bring so it is important to make the best of every day,” Luisa says. “I have so many stories because I was only 19-years-old when I came to Australia nearly 60 years ago. “I learnt everything I know the hard way. “I went through all those difficulties with no problem because didn’t want to think of myself as different from anyone else - we should all be equal.” Facilitator Belinda is also involved with the School of Hard Knocks and Absolutely Everybody choirs. “I was invited, by SkillsLink, to get on board and I am very excited to be a part of it,” Belinda says. “I think it is a wonderful project and there is definitely a need because social isolation is like an epidemic in all communities.” To join A House of Many Stories phone SkillsLink on 6583 7288 or simply go to Panthers Port Macquarie each Thursday from 9.30am to 11.30am.

Online Lodgement Of DA’s To Save Time: The time it takes homeowners and builders to prepare and submit a development application will go from up to 10 days to less than 30 minutes

With Leslie Williams State Member for Port Macquarie

thanks to a new online lodgement beginning later this year. Cutting red tape and faster housing approvals is one of the Premier’s Priorities and with online lodgement, the NSW Government is doing just that. Presently, the average time it takes to investigate, prepare, submit, lodge and track a DA manually is up to 10 days, but with the new online lodgement on the Department of Planning and Environment’s planning portal it will take less than half an hour. This will save people so much time and make the entire DA process easier and more efficient. The planning portal is up and running, but the addition of this new functionality for online lodgement will improve people’s lives. To make a submission visit the Planning Portal at www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/ publications/on-exhibition

MEMBER for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams has welcomed the NSW Government announcement that $48 million will be spent to provide an enhanced insurance scheme with a minimum of five years’ income protection for on duty claims, and a specialised health program for NSW Ambulance Service paramedics. The funding will ensure the state’s frontline health providers can get the support they need to stay healthy and are supported to get back to work if they are injured. “I met with local Paramedics last October to hear their concerns first hand and I am keen to meet with them again to know what they think of the new measures. “Yesterday I rang local paramedic Scott Duffy to let him know about the new support package,” Mrs Williams said. The $48 million investment includes: a $30 million health and wellbeing program which will include a dedicated psychologist, physiotherapist, occupational physician and a Paramedic Safety Champion who will act to ensure paramedics are safe and well; increased income protection for paramedics injured at work to at least five years. “Our paramedics provide an invaluable service to the community and work tirelessly to help keep us safe and healthy, Mrs Williams said. “It is important that we do everything we can to help them stay safe and healthy too. “They work in difficult and dangerous circumstances and need appropriate support if they are injured at work.”

Now this is a word that will move you

I WENT to a public toilet the other day. Inside, on one of the cubicle doors, was a sign that said ‘ambulant toilet’. When I arrived home I looked up ambulant. The Webster dictionary, among other definitions, said ‘moving from place to place’. Now, I don’t know about you, but when I go to the toilet I do my business and then leave. I do not ‘move from place to place’. The Webster dictionary added ‘ambulatory’, which was very helpful for those people who looked in the dictionary to see what ambulant meant. Reader’s Digest went one better - it said ‘ambulatory patients may make their own morning tea’. Imagine going to a toilet to make morning tea. Anyway, I have seen in a few toilets the word ‘ambulant’ and I have often wondered why this word was used – probably to distinguish it from handicapped. The Reader’s Digest said one meaning of ambulant was peripatetic. But remember you have to move about and if you can make your own morning tea that’s better still. I had to go to my big dictionary for its definition of ambulant. It also said ambulant meant ‘walking, moving about’, but it added that the patient was not

my

LAURIE BARBER

confined to bed but was allowed to walk about. It added that ambulation meant the spreading of gangrene, which presumably means you shouldn’t sit on the toilet seat for too long. The word goes back many years. The first use this dictionary had was from 1619, when Francis Bacon in a letter said Sir Edward Coke was in his night cap but ‘ambulatory’. No mention of toilets. In 1654 a knight was ‘dormant, ambulant, combatant’. My understanding of dormant was, at the best, sleepy. Maybe the knight had already said good knight. But at least he was able to move about. The big dictionary said to ambulate was to walk, or move about. It gave a 1623 definition and that was ‘to move hither and thither’. The key word in my big dictionary was ‘patient’, so I would assume the word ambulatory

means a patient who is able to walk about, toilet or no toilet. While I was at it, I looked up the word ambulance. This word came into general use during the Crimean War. It was a moving hospital that followed the army and treated the wounded so they could go back and be killed. The word developed so that it now refers to any covered vehicle for sick or wounded persons. An ambulancier is described as ‘a man in charge of an ambulance’. My computer put a little red line under ambulancier, so obviously, it was a new word for the computer also. The word is described as ‘rare’. If you want to know the meaning of amble, it means to walk. Its original use was for horses, and it came to be used for people about the turn of the 16th century. Many places these days have toilets that are described as ‘unisex’. This has nothing to do with ambulant. But when I was a little boy a long time ago we used to joke about the word stable and sick horses. A little while ago I heard an ABC report about a sick horse being in a stable condition. lauriebarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au

Business PROFILE

Combined approach to aged care RESPITE, disability and aged services on the Mid North Coast have become stronger with the merger of four distinct and independently successful care providers. Meals on Wheels Mid North Coast, Hastings District Respite Care, Parklands Cottage and Hastings Home Modifications have joined together to unite their complementary skills. Omnicare Alliance Limited CEOs John Carroll and Raymond Gouck say the not-forprofit care provider is now the leading provider of aged and disability care support in the region and the organisation is now in the process of rolling out a wide range of services across the region. Port Macquarie, Sawtell, Kempsey, Wauchope, Camden Haven, Taree, and Great Lakes all have Omnicare branches and services in these areas are planned to grow in the future. Studies show the number of Australians aged 65 and over will rise from three million today to over eight million by 2050. By 2050 it is expected that more than 3.5 million people will need access to aged care services, with around 80 per cent of these delivered in the community. “So, the need for a service of this kind is more vital than ever,” Raymond says. Omnicare Alliance provides quick and easy access to everything from respite care to meal delivery, social outings, shopping assistance, and home modifications, maintenance and gardening assistance. “Many people find even simple things like changing a lightbulb a challenge, so as our

Easier access to NDIS & Aged Care services

With over 60 years of combined experience, the Omnicare Alliance disability and aged care support team of Tanya Evans, Emma McMaugh, Teena Feringa, Leeanne McCloskey, at rear, and Skye Powick, Julie Dunn and Julie King, front, are ready to assist you to negotiate the new National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and My Aged Care systems services roll out through our branches, we will soon be able to help with that,” John says. The power of the alliance lies in the capacity to put money into the provision of more services, through economies of scale and centralised administrative support, he says. The new-look Omnicare support team’s role is to help people in the community navigate their way through the new National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and the My Aged Care

system, to reduce the stress people may feel in trying to understand their rights and obligations and the services that may be available to them. “The NDIS and My Aged Care changes can be very confusing for people and there are a lot of myths amongst the community about what it all means,” John says. Omnicare’s free concierge service provides initial assistance by guiding clients through the process and helping them identify the best way

to have their needs met. “People can simply phone or email us and we will help them,” John says. “They can choose any organisation to provide their care services – we simply want to help them navigate the system initially.” Omnicare Alliance has a team of support facilitators that plan and deliver the care and support needed through selected direct support staff, and can be a NDIS provider as well. “Our facilitators are dynamic and willing to challenge the status quo finding innovative and creative ways through the NDIS to give clients what they need to live a fully supported and inclusive life,” Raymond says. The ageing population on the Mid North Coast is set to grow 30% higher, on average, than the rest of the state. This places at-home care in the position of being an important option for the community. The Omnicare Alliance merger unites four organisations, all specialists in their areas, and thus provides a powerful one-stop-shop service. “Our shared vision is to create a larger organisation that will establish a single point of contact for consumers,” Raymond says. “We aim to make it as easy as possible for older people and those living with a disability to access the services and support they need to remain living independently in their own homes for longer.” For more information email mylife@ omnicare.org.au or phone 1300 336 488.

Circus part of community By NIKALA SIM

Port Macquarie Tacking Point Lions Club members from left, Janice McGilchrist, Stuart Aston, Malcolm Merrick, Bev Eames and Scott Barnes with Stardust Circus Ringmaster Adam St James, raised over $2600 for local women’s and children’s charities

Health traineeships THE Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) has welcomed 10 new students in the latest intake of its Aboriginal School Based Traineeship program. The program, named in honour of prominent Aboriginal activist Elsa Dixon, is part of the District’s commitment to delivering training for Aboriginal students. The Elsa Dixon Program aims to promote workforce diversity and innovation and better health outcomes for patients. The students have begun their two-year traineeship with the MNCLHD, working in Nursing, Allied Health, and Business Administration across all health sites. They will combine on-the-job training with formal TAFE studies where they will be undertaking Certificate III level courses. On completion of their traineeships, the students will have achieved a nationally recognised qualification in their chosen field, which contributes to their Higher School Certificate. They will also have the opportunity to apply for positions within MNCLHD. The program works in close collaboration with local secondary schools, the Aboriginal community, State Training Services Office and MNCLHD as well as the Registered Training Provider. MNCLHD Chief Executive Stewart Dowrick said the Local Health District was committed to increasing the representation of Aboriginal employees in all parts of the health sector.

STARDUST Circus took the opportunity to help the Hastings community, during their recent stay in Port Macquarie. Ringmaster Adam St James says the circus is a community in itself, and takes every opportunity to become part of the place where they perform. “We embrace every community we visit and make it our own,” Adam says. “We come in and spend a lot of money in the local shops just like members of the community. “And we are in the fabulous position to assist charities and always help out wherever we can.” Stardust Circus has a long-time relationship with Lions clubs across Australia and has assisted local clubs during visits in 2014, 2016, and during their most recent visit which ended last Sunday. “We were approached by Port Macquarie Tacking Point Lions Club

to assist with a bucket collection and I believe this year was very successful with over $2600 being raised,” Adam says. Port Macquarie Tacking Point Lions Club Directors Malcolm Merrick and Stuart Aston say the money will be shared amongst charities with a focus on women and children. This includes funding the training of a crisis counsellor for Lifeline Mid Coast, donations to Camp Quality and the Australian Lions Children’s Cancer Research Foundation, and purchase of a television for training purposes for the Port Macquarie Hastings Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Service. “We would like to thank Stardust Circus management, owner Jan Lennon, her family and staff for allowing us to collect this money for worthy charities,” Stuart Aston says. “And to every person who contributed to our collection – thank you.”

Mushrooms are angry EVEN though I am no longer a councillor, I still quite often receive phone calls and emails from people who are angry about what they say is a council that is not listening and is treating its community members like mushrooms. There are many issues that people raise with me simply because they cannot progress them after being hit by council’s bureaucratic brick wall or the lack of interest from a number of current councillors. Feedback I also receive on a regular basis concerns decisions of council that make little or no sense or that are totally lacking in consistency or transparency. A recent example was the Tuffins Lane sports fields issue where council decided to tip a developer into buying the fields from underneath council, the local sport clubs and community. The decision by the council to progress and apply for rate rises is another that has struck

a chord. Many people are incredibly upset that there was what they believe, let’s call it gamesmanship, on the part of several candidates - now councillors who said rate rises wouldn’t happen. A number of people in the business community have commented on the recent decision by council to aggressively pursue a legal appeal against a local small business, which has done nothing to improve council’s reputation,

if not sunk it further into the mire. It also has parts of the business community disappointed that council would seek to run a small business through the Supreme Court yet again. The distinct lack of road network planning in recent years still stands out as a major sore point with the community and the anger grows weekly as does the traffic congestion – particularly around the well-known Lake Road bottleneck. At some point councillors who under-perform on, or do not care for their communities’ best interests will no doubt be punted at the polls, but in the meantime the community still has to wear these decisions and ramifications. Having spent a number of years on the ‘inside’, I can assure you that there are many, many good people working hard in the council organisation who are frustrated and, like the community, hold out hope that the top management and the councillors start to listen, learn and lead.

RESIDENTS are invited to attend the March Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Ordinary Meeting in Wauchope. The meeting will be held on Wednesday March 15 starting at 5.30pm at the Wauchope Showground Hall in High Street. Changing the venue for council meetings forms part of the ‘Taking Council to the Community’ program, providing greater community access to meetings and increasing engagement in council’s

decision-making processes. “It is important for council to continue to engage all of our local government area in both feedback and in decision making,” said Mayor Peter Besseling. The meeting agenda and papers will be available for viewing during office hours at council offices and libraries from Monday March 13, or on council’s website pmhc.nsw.gov.au/ councilmeetings from Friday March 10.

Residents can address council on agenda items or in the public forum for items not listed on the formal agenda. Anyone wishing to address council will be required to complete and submit the appropriate forms no later than 4.30pm on Tuesday March 14. Forms are available from any Council Customer Service Office or you can download them at pmhc.nsw.gov.au/agenda and pmhc.nsw. gov.au/publicforum.

A topic to get your teeth into

Pictured: Citizens Against Fluoridation President Paul Jones is keen to see a swell in members of the community educated about the fluoridation of the Hastings water supply not support the claim that fluoridated water improves dental health.” States with high rates of water fluoridation have comparative rates of decayed, missing, and filled teeth due to decay, to those with low rates of fluoridation, John says. In Queensland less than 5% of the water supply is fluoridated and 14.6 % of people aged between 35-54 years have decay. In this age group, Western Australia has 92% water fluoridation and 14.5% decay, Victoria 77% fluoridation and 15.1% decay, Tasmania 83% fluoridation and 14.1% decay, Australian Capital Territory 100% fluoridation and 12.9% decay, New South Wales has 92% fluoridation and 13.9% decay and the Northern Territory 70% fluoridation and 12.7% decay. This clearly shows fluoridation is not the answer, John says. “Fluoride has been outmoded by virtue of the fact that our standard of living is such that the vast majority of parents make sure that their children have better oral hygiene and more regular visits to the dentist,” Paul says. “Fluoride came into my life half way through it but nowadays many children ingest it from conception. “My wife even took fluoride tablets which are now impossible to get from any reputable source.” There is a wealth of information on the internet and Paul is always keen to share what he knows. “It is vital to be educated about decisions taken which affect us, particularly our health,” He says. To find out more go to the Citizens Against Fluoridation facebook page or talk to Paul Jones at the information stand outside the Port Central Horton Street entrance on the morning of Friday, March 10.

By NIKALA SIM THE new president of a passionate group is keen to see people sink their teeth into healthy debate. Citizens Against Fluoridation came into being as a protest voice prior to the decision, by the State Government, to fluoridate the Port Macquarie-Hastings district water supply in February 2012. For five years, Dr John Lusk of Dunbogan led the charge to disseminate information, but last December ceded the role to Port Macquarie’s Paul Jones. The new President is not a scientist and does not profess to be a water fluoridation technician. “What I know about fluoridation is only what I have absorbed from books written by very knowledgeable people and from my personal experience,” Paul says. “We are an ageing population here in the Hastings, and science tells us this chemical is a neurotoxin that accumulates in the body. “Ultimately people don’t want to suffer the problems of late age – osteoporosis, dementi,a and osteoarthritis for example. “I am not saying fluoride is directly related to these conditions but over time it builds up

11

in the body. “It is known to undermine the immune system and damage the thyroid gland which regulates body and brain growth and development, body temperature, energy levels and metabolic functions – once this happens it is too late.” Water fluoridation came into being, in Australia, in the 1950s and was touted as a response to dental decay. “I was 14 years of age before I went to the dentist,” Paul says. “In those days there wasn’t the equipment they use nowadays. “It was crazy - they didn’t even give you injections. “Going to the dentist was frightful and you put it off until you got a severe ache or your tooth

was about to fall out.” On Paul’s first visit he had ten fillings. “I was pro-fluoride when my children were young but then I began to hear differing opinions about its efficacy and safety. “I started to research privately and as a result built up a body of knowledge that convinced me, without doubt, that fluoride is not good for the bodily system. “So I corrected my own failings in dental hygiene and my children’s and as a result we all have great dental health.” There is a body of evidence that indicates a fluoridated water supply does not address dental decay, Dr John Lusk says. “The Australian National Dental Health Survey 2004-2006 clearly shows data that does

Phoebes offer food for thought By NIKALA SIM IT can be isolating to make a choice to swim against the tide, but for residents of the Hastings and Macleay – especially young people support is at hand. Port Macquarie’s Phoebe Crane first chose to not eat meat as a young girl while living in Germany. This was a radical and unpopular decision, she says, in a culture where meat features heavily in the diet. So, when long-time Hastings resident Phoebe became aware a large number of vegans live in the area, she began a community group called Vegan Apprentice Port Macquarie. “I started the group to support vegans living here, as well as vegan tourists coming to visit,” Phoebe says. “Vegans often feel lost and isolated and are not aware of where to purchase vegan goodies, or where they can eat out.

Phoebe Crane, left, and Phoebe Lavers have more than their first name in common – the two women are united in their commitment to veganism “We hold meet-ups, share food, recipes and stories every month except for January. “Unlike many other vegan groups we encourage anybody who is looking at changing over to a plant-based diet to join us without running the risk of being bullied. “Our group often has ‘lost’ parents of teenagers or children who have decided to become vegan, who are worried how to feed them a balanced diet.” The desire to offer more support for young people making the choice to avoid eating meat turned into something concrete when she

received a message from an 18-year-old Port Macquarie girl. “It was really bizarre,” Phoebe says. “Phoebe Lavers contacted me and asked if Vegan Apprentice was interested in doing a youth group.” This resulted in the establishment of Port Macquarie’s first vegan youth group. It is mere coincidence that the two women share the same name and ethic. “I felt a bit isolated as a vegan and wanted to reach out and talk to people,” young Phoebe says.

“I’m really interested in the environment and learnt a lot through the documentary Food Inc. “I have learnt that you can save a huge amount of the world’s resources by just choosing to eat less meat. “I am an 18-year-old girl living in a first world country and would rather save those resources for someone who needs it.” Animal agriculture is responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions - more than the combined exhaust from all transportation, Phoebe says. Vegans utilise 1/18th of land and resources, in comparison to people who eat meat, she adds. “Even simply cutting meat by 10% will feed 100 million people and eliminating meat could end starvation forever.” The Vegan Apprentice Port Macquarie facebook page features recipes, alerts on new products and where to buy them, and promotes local restaurants and cafes that choose to offer vegan food on their menus. There are many people with dietary issues who use the page too, Phoebe Crane says. “They may need to be dairy free and so they access us because they know that as vegans we avoid dairy too.” The group is as open and inviting as possible, she says. “We are trying to create a community and make no judgement against anyone for their choices.” “I love cooking and my body feels amazing - I have never felt this good internally,” says Phoebe Lavers. “People often see vegans as people who deprive themselves but becoming vegan has opened my eyes to how much there is out there. “I have fallen in love with food so much more and eat a much greater variety of food so am really healthy.” Each month around 30 Vegan Apprentices get together to share information and food. The youngest person at their last meeting was 18-months-old with the eldest being 86.

These Irish are absolute legends

I thought they could use these to fundraise or simply give them to people affected by the fires

Pictured: Cameron Mather, Eileen McCann and Peter Byrne join in presenting the musical traditions of their country during Celtic Beat – Legends of Ireland, at the Glasshouse on March 18

ST PATRICK would be proud to know of the actions of these Irish entertainers. Celtic Beat – Legends of Ireland head to Port Macquarie to perform their cultural spectacular, on Saturday, March 18. Show producer and performer Peter Byrne says his team of artists were keen to assist when they heard of the devastation of Pappinbarra during the recent fires in February. “We have performed in Port Macquarie a number of times and over the years and have made good friends amongst the Irish community there,” Peter says. “When I was told about the devastating fires, I wanted to do what I could to help.” Peter got on the phone to Rebuild Pappinbarra campaigner Lisa McLeod and offered 50 tickets for their show at the Glasshouse. “I thought they could use these to fundraise or simply give them to people affected by the fires so they could experience a bit of joy in this difficult time.” Those passes were put up as prizes in a raffle at the Pappinbarra Grown and Gathered market, last Sunday. “There was a huge turnout – it was fantastic – there were people from all over the coast,” Lisa says.

“People were really happy to purchase tickets and everyone was very generous.” The final amount of funds raised is yet to be tallied. “I was so surprised when Peter called me to offer 50 free tickets for the Celtic Beat – Legends of Ireland show. “He said go your hardest – fundraise, help everyone - this was huge to us. “As soon as people started talking about St Patrick’s Day there was such excitement about

the show.” The Celtic Beat – Legends of Ireland is a show like no other, Peter says. Friend of 30-years Paul Martell narrates with a healthy dose of charm and wit. Peter, who for many years, performed a Neil Diamond tribute show puts the right voice to every Irish song performed. “Celtic Beat – Legends of Ireland came about because of audience response when I would talk about my Irish heritage during the Neil Diamond

tribute show,” Peter explains. “So many people would say to me we would love to see an Irish show.” As well as a haunting Irish voice Peter also plays guitar and the traditional Irish drum the bodhrain. Singer and fiddler Eileen McCann epitomises the soul of Ireland – her passion is second to none when she sings. Cameron Mather displays the flexibility of the Irish and their complete love of music with the dynamic sounds of the guitar, banjo, bouzouki and bodhran. With so many talented Irish artists to cover it was difficult to choose the final line-up, Peter says. The Pogues, The Corr’s, Foster and Allen, U2, Ronan Keating, Van Morrison, Clancy Brothers, Thin Lizzy and the Furey’s all get a look in. And the show is not simply a musical one, Peter says. Each artist’s life is explored visually on a big screen to give a much broader understanding of where their talent and message originates. To book your ticket to Celtic Beat – Legends of Ireland on March 18 at 8pm phone the Glasshouse on 6581 8888 or go to www. glasshouse.org.au

Tribute to Doris Day

MELINDA Schneider is bringing the music of her idol, Hollywood legend Doris Day, to Port Macquarie next month. After forging a dazzling country music career that has won her six Golden Guitars at Tamworth and stunning audiences on the television show ‘Dancing With The Stars’, Melinda steps back in time to pay homage to one of her musical heroes. Following on from hugely successful capital city seasons of her theatre stage show ‘Doris’, Melinda is bringing the songs from the show that audiences love so much to new territories in a concert format called ‘Melinda Does Doris.’ Melinda’s love affair with Doris Day began in childhood when she laid eyes on ‘Calamity Jane’, the Holllywood star’s 1953 film tour de force. Melinda was smitten by that musical and Day’s performance. “She was such a huge talent” said Melinda. “A triple threat as they say – she could sing, dance and act. I thought then she was the best of everything a woman can be and when I grew up

Locals in the gold at State titles

THE Northern NSW Regional Dragon Boat Team took out a clean sweep of all three categories at the NSW State Championships held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith, last weekend. In the team were 21 paddlers from Flamin’ Dragons Port Macquarie including the coaching and management team. Gold medals were presented to the Opens (men’s) team, with Southern NSW second and Western NSW third, Women’s, with the West second and South third, and Mixed with South second and West Third. Northern Region Squad coach David Pees said: “It is a great result to back up from last year and again bring home gold. “Paddlers from Armidale and right down the coast to Forster came together to prove that we are the best in NSW.” Manager Kim Blundell said; “With three from three, we now have the right to represent NSW at the Australian Dragon Boat National Championships held in Albury in April.” Racing is held over 500 metres with 22 people in a boat that when fully loaded weighs over two tonnes. “We will now continue our training to take on the best in the country,” Blundell said. “Queensland and Victoria are our biggest competition, but like last year, we cannot get complacent as SA

Come and run with Deek

By LIZZIE STIPCEVIC

Pictured: There are events for all ages at the Port Macquarie Running Festival

THERE will be no lonely long distance runners at this weekend’s Port Macquarie Running Festival. Now in its 6th year the annual festival is reaching record numbers, and keeping runners happy. “This year it’s looking to be a record participation,” said race director Kevin Chilvers. “In previous years there have been around 800 runners and walkers. We are at a point now where we already have more than this registered. You get a lot of late entries so we are expecting at least 1300 runners and walkers across the various events of the festival. “ However, what makes this running event so popular is that people love to run together. “Running is about supporting each other,” Mr Chilvers said. “It’s such a solo thing but you can find people that you can connect with and do social runs with, which makes it easier. I think the cyclists got it right a long time ago with riding in packs and having the coffee after. The runners are starting to catch up on this now. “Running is also much more than just a thing that we do. It’s actually a lifestyle and it’s something that we use not just to keep fit, but to keep our minds fit as well. “It’s about having time to think about stuff and staying true to you.” Runners will also get the chance to run alongside Australian marathon icon Robert de Castella. “Runners will get to run with Robert de Castella in the 5km race,” Mr Chilvers said. “It’s quite amazing because he is really the marathon guru in Australia. When he was competing, he was running against all the best Kenyan and African athletes and beating them as well. It’s massive to have him here this year. “We are holding try-outs on the Saturday morning prior to the event for some Indigenous

We have already got 60 registered runners for that treble so they will start at 7am and do the 21.1km half marathon, and they’ve got two hours to finish that, and then they start the 10km at 9am and then they finish off with the 5km alongside Robert De Costella at 10am.” However, Mr Chilvers made it clear that this event is for everyone, not just elite athletes. “Anyone can enter any of the races,” Mr Chilvers explained. “We have some guys who will really be pushing it in that (treble) event and will be running really solid, and then you’ve got others who have just taken up the challenge to just finish it. “We also have two elite female athletes Kirsten Molloy and Celia Sullohern - who are running in it. Both these girls have competed internationally. They are going to be taking on the Treble for the first time. “There’s a race for everyone at the Port Macquarie Running Festival.” Mr Chilvers has participated in past events, taking out first place in his age category and says he knows why people come each year. “It’s just that self-achievement of finishing. For many that is the prize,” Mr Chilvers said. The festival includes two children’s fun runs - the 2km run for 4-8 year olds and the 4km run for 9-12 year olds. The kids will finish off the run with ice cream, fruit salad, and a medal. The Port Macquarie Running Festival will take place on Sunday, March 12 from 7am. The last date to register online is Thursday, March 9. For more information, entry, and registration details visit www. portmacquarierunningfestival.com.au

Memorial a real battle

THE Harold Dick Memorial Marathon held last Sunday saw the catamaran division a battle of two parts. First, Rohan Nosworthy on Return finally beat Frank O’Rourke on Dino on yardstick after a race-long battle. Second, Rob Barwick on Drift finished just ahead of Dave Winter on Spica after another race-long battle. Spica looked to have this battle won, but when in sight of the finish line the shock cord holding his trapeze wire in place, broke. Without the cord, the trapeze ring came off the trapeze harness, so when Dave pushed out over the side to swing out on the trapeze he went into the river. Showing enterprise, he managed to release the mainsheet before the boat capsized, but at 74,

didn’t have the strength to get back on board with no available trapeze wire, so he hung between the rudders and steered the boat to the nearby shore until he could stand and get back onto the boat. This may have let Drift slip through on yardstick, but Spica still took the win on handicap ahead of Drift, Return, and Dino. In the monohull division, Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in Flembouyant won on yardstick ahead of Jeff Walsh and Sharon Carney in Big Bang, Simon and Elsa Gandy in Voyager and Philip Lillehagen and Jake Kordemaa in Elmo the Tasar. Big Bang beat Flembouyant on handicap, ahead of Elmo the Tasar and Voyager. The mixed class yardstick results were Flembouyant, Return, Big Bang, Dino, Voyager, Drift, Spica, and Elmo the Tasar.

Usual suspects are lining up in NRL

Buckle up for a JT Master Class

So, how did you go in NRL Round 1? For Your Local Independent supporters it was a tough start – four from eight. But hey, plenty of time and no reason to panic … yet. Couple of things came out of Round 1. The Rabbits still can’t be relied on. The usual suspects - Storm, Broncos and Cowboys will be up there again this year. The Raiders lost (in Golden Point in Townsville!) but will be a big threat. Question marks over Titans and Panthers. Early season tipping is difficult with some results not a fair indication of how teams will be faring after they settle in. The roster doesn’t always equate to performance. So look carefully at who has bigger reasons to win? Who gets a second leg at home? Etc. OK. Let’s put our tipping caps on. Roosters v Bulldogs (Thursday, March 9, 7.05pm, Allianz Stadium): Roosters have shelved the mishaps of 2016 and gave the Titans a nice little wake-up last weekend. The Bulldogs won’t let them jump out of the boxes so quickly this time. Both teams appear to have come

2pm, McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle): If the Knights were going to jag one early, this would be it. The Titans have a good roster, but read too much of their own press going into last week’s fizzer against the Roosters. The Gold Coast team will be shocked back into reality, while the Knights will still be feeling the bruises of a physical loss to the Warriors. • Your Local Independent Tips: Titans Sea Eagles v Rabbitohs (Saturday, March 11, 4.30pm, Lottoland, Brookvale): Two lastround losers. Too little form or confidence to go in either direction here. The one certainty is that Manly are always tough to beat at Brookvale. The bookies also have them as firm favourites. • Your Local Independent Tips: Sea Eagles Raiders v Sharks (Saturday, March 11, 6.30pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): Just two games in, but a lot on the line for both these teams. Both coming off losses, but the Raiders near-miss against the Cowboys would have been a confidence booster. They are really tough at home and the Sharks look certain to be starting behind the eight-ball in defence of their crown. • Your Local Independent Tips: Raiders Tigers v Panthers (Sunday, March 12, 3pm, Campbelltown Stadium): Similar to above, with not 9th – 12th March 2017 quite the same gravity for the Panthers. Thursday 9th March, 8.05pm, Allianz Stadium Some had moved the Panthers into Roosters vs Bulldogs premiership favouritism before they Friday 10th March, 6pm, Mt Smart Stadium kicked their toes on the Rd 1 hurdle Warriors vs Storm (the Saints). The Tigers meanwhile had Friday 10th March, 8.05pm, Suncorp Stadium plenty of grunt and glitz in spanking the Broncos vs Cowboys Rabbits. Panthers still not convincing. Saturday 11th March, 3pm, McDonald Jones Stadium Knights vs Titans • Your Local Independent Tips: Saturday 11th March, 5.30pm, Lottoland Tigers Sea Eagles vs Rabbitohs Dragons v Eels (Sunday, Saturday 11th March, 7.30pm, GIO Stadium March 12, 5.30pm, WIN Stadium, Raiders vs Sharks Wollongong): Both unwanted, but Sunday 12th March, 4pm, Campbelltown Stadium both started the season with convincing Wests Tigers vs Panthers wins. The Eels are away again, but Sunday 12th March, 6.30pm, WIN Stadium expect the Saints to be tougher then Dragons vs Eels Rd • Your Local Independent Tips: Dragons

through round one unscathed. Close one. Dogs won’t want two losses in a row, but Roosters deserve the nod. • Your Local Independent Tips: Roosters Warriors v Storm (Friday, March 10, 5pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): Hmmm, another tough one. Two first round winners and a lot to like about the Warriors in ’17. They are also at home. However there are injury concerns over Issac Luke and Simon Mannering. Despite Billy Slater still being in cotton wool, expect the Storm to be too disciplined for the NZers. • Your Local Independent Tips: Storm Broncos v Cowboys (Friday, March 10, 7.05pm, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane): Blockbuster! These two teams just keep coming up with epic encounters. The street-corner geniuses are lining up behind the Cows, but disregard the Broncos at home at your peril. Wayne Bennett’s boys are solid early season performers. Bennett will have all his best chess moves on display. • Your Local Independent Tips: Broncos Knights v Titans (Saturday, March 11,
