60 years of high points By BARBARA DYER
Above: Hastings District Flying Club president Rod Davison with club captain and flying instructor Ray Lind. Right: The original clubhouse.
IT has been 60 years since the Hastings District Flying Club was first cleared for take-off, and club president Rod Davison has been busy planning a celebration. Invitations have been sent via aviation magazine, newspapers, radio and Facebook to reach out to past and present members to attend a reunion dinner at Panthers on September 8. Rod is hoping for about 150 on the night. He has been a member of HDFC since 1986, when he moved to Port Macquarie. HDFC, which operates a flying club and recreational aviation flying school out of its own hangar and clubhouse at Port Macquarie, gained its wings on September 8, 1958. Back then, as now, the club encouraged all ages to take to the skies and its first chief flying instructor Barrie Abbott encouraged younger
people to progress to commercial aviation. “That continues today, with students ranging in age from 14 to 94,” says Rod. As the club gears up for its diamond anniversary, he said the club

could look back on a proud history of turning out professional pilots, with the flying school now led by chief flying instructor Steve Smith and with Ray Lind as club captain and mentor. • Continued Page 5

Help amid the heart-ache By SUE PATERICK WHEN Macleay Valley farmer and local butcher, Josh Ball, saw the plight of droughtstricken farmers in western NSW he knew he had to help even if it was for just one person. So he wrote a Facebook post asking local famers to donate just two bales of hay and in no time his Macleay Hay Run appeal snowballed. At the time of writing this article Josh’s campaign had received $70,000 in cash and over 500 hay bales and was still rising. Local independent truck drivers donated their rigs, time and diesel to transport the bales out west and a convoy of five semi-trailers and two rigid trucks left the South Kempsey Service Centre early last Sunday morning. This life-giving convoy of 240 hay bales is headed for the small settlement of Gundy in the Hunter Valley. “The Macleay is a low-income area and people are struggling, but they are still willing to put their hand in their pockets and help out those less fortunate,” Josh said. “People criticise Kempsey, but look at what our community has done in just 10 days.” When asked who has helped, Josh said it would take a whole newspaper to write down all the names. While it is dry in the Macleay too, the valley had some recent rain but 98 per cent of NSW and 66 per cent of Queensland are in drought and have been for a long, long time. Even though he knew it was dry inland, Josh and his dad saw the true extent of the dire situation when they drove a truck load of hay bales to a farmer at Attunga near Manila last week. “There is no grass, crops or feed anywhere just dirt,” Josh said. “And there are dead sheep everywhere and the smell is terrible.” He expected to feel happy to help someone in need but what he saw just made him sad and angry. On the way to Attunga they passed a farm of dead and dying animals and stopped to give the farmer a bale of hay. Josh said that farmer was broke and had used all his money to feed his stock. When his money ran out all the farmer could do was watch his sheep dying in the parched dusty paddocks. “Farmers out west have no money and can’t borrow any because they have no way of paying back a loan and some are committing suicide,” Josh said. “It’s bad and I could tell you stories that would make you cry.” After that trip out west, Josh became enraged with all levels of government. “We vote for a government that is supposed to look after Aussie farmers but the government has been nowhere and is not helping,” he said. “Yet, they are willing to give billions away in aid to foreign countries but expect Australian farms to pay back a loan. “It’s just wrong.” Josh remembers driving out west with his

family as a child and seeing fields of waving grains and crops. So to see nothing but dirt now was heartbreaking. He believes this devastating drought will raise the price of meat by three times next year and there will be no grain to make our breakfast cereals. “We’ll be bringing in grain from overseas to make Weetbix,” he said. “We’re supposed to be Australia and living in the Lucky Country but no one cares about Aussie farmers.” Last week the NSW Government announced an extra $500 million Drought Relief package, taking its recent contribution to assist farmers in these dry times to over $1 billion. The package will provide funds for transport subsidies, counselling for mental health issues, animal welfare and stock disposal, cutting costs to farming fees including water charges, land service fees and registration of farm vehicles, and critical services in rural regions. While Josh feels this help is too little too late, he thinks it is better than nothing and will continue to try and purchase more hay. However, his appeal has gotten too large for him to handle so he asks anyone who wants to donate to the struggling farmers who grow our food to contact Aussie Helpers on https:// aussiehelpers.org.au To access NSW Government assistance visit The Rural Assistance Authority’s website on www.raa.nsw.gov.au You can also follow Josh’s efforts on the Macleay Hay Run Facebook page.
Community hears and acts THE plight of our drought-stricken farmers is highlighting just how giving many locals are. Even those who can least afford it. Although 95% of the Manning Support Service’s clients are pensioners, they recently gave as much as they could to help our local farmers. “We were absolutely overwhelmed with the amount of compassion from our clients at our recent Christmas in July luncheon,” said John Cooke, Port Macquarie Manager at Manning Support Services. “The clients, staff, and volunteers at the event not only donated money towards Operation Christmas Child, but the clients also suggested that we all help our local farmers.” The Christmas in July luncheon took place on Thursday July 26 at the Wauchope Country Club. The lunch included four busloads of over 100 seniors and when the topic of our droughtstricken farmers came up, the decision to help was unanimous. “We raised a total of $1062.10,” said John. “Our offices are out of Taree and Port Macquarie so a lot of staff and clients have either grown up on a farm or know people who have. Generally our clients are of that generation that are really concerned about others. A lot of these people are pensioners too, so they don’t have funds to just give away.” Manning Support Services Inc is a not-for-
profit community-based organisation on the Mid North Coast that has run for over 30 years. The organisation provides support services for families, older people and their carers, those experiencing dementia and their carers, people with a disability and their carers, those in residential care facilities and financially disadvantaged households. “Our organisation provides everything from domestic assistance to transporting people, to these sorts of outings, and much more,” explains John. “Our clients are compassionate. They really enjoy the services we provide for them and they want to make sure they are giving back to others who also need similar type of help.” The Mid North Coast is full of compassionate and generous people who care about each other. Some other locals who have helped the farmers include Rob Hamilton, a businessman from Wauchope who has organised fundraising with the first truck of hay being delivered recently after just one week of fundraising. Kempsey Stock and Land held a charity auction. Bunnings Port Macquarie held a sausage sizzle, and West Kempsey Hotel also raised funds for the farmers. Jobs should stay here
IN recent days, the national press has claimed to have evidence that the NSW government, through the Roads minister, Melinda Pavey, and the Roads and Maritime Services department is demanding software companies applying for a $100 million contract to provide IT services must hire at least 30% of their programmers overseas within 3 years. This means that at least 300 Australian IT jobs will be sent overseas in the first 3 years. The newspapers state documents sent to all companies that have made the shortlist, including several from India where programmers earn about $10 per hour, expect the services to be provided at the lowest possible cost. Sadly, this is another example of the Berejiklian government thumbing their noses at the people of NSW and in particular NSW businesses and workers, by providing contract opportunities overseas under the guise of cost savings which has proven to be a disaster based on recent contracts. Think the North West Rail link collapsing infrastructure, Sydney Light Rail and all the recent delays and disputes and the Blue Mountain
rail carriages which won’t fit at the stations. All of these have suffered cost and timeline blowouts. Surely using overseas companies and their workers, while appearing cost effective in the short term, end up costing more when you consider problems noted above. Consider also the additional company tax and income tax that would be paid by Australian businesses and their employees here and the ongoing support for their local economies if only Australians were employed. In addition, Australian universities are producing highly qualified IT graduates who should expect support going into the workplace, not to be ignored and forced to join an unemployed list. So far Minister Pavey has denied these claims but has refused to release any document covering the offshore component of the contract, which in turn raises more questions. DOWN TO Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, their long-standing policy of ‘no business levy paid, no footpath upgrade’ in Wauchope is leaving us with parts of the CBD having cracked, degraded footpaths (decades older than our 36-year-old amalgamated council) and with no prospect of renewal. Report a footpath injury to council and you should get a ‘sorry’ letter and see ‘your’ piece of path replaced by concrete. The question is, should safety in public areas be a priority of council or just an ‘unaffordable’ expense? What do we pay rates for primarily? Thumbs Up Thumbs Down is your chance to have your say. TO those wonderful people of Kempsey who assisted when I recently downsized to live in Port Macquarie - Bins on Rims, Kempsey Removals (Johnno and Tristan) and the Lifeline volunteers who returned again and again when I found I had to part with more furniture. Another group, the Men’s Shed, were invaluable in helping me attain the deadline for my house sale. All the above people are excellent examples of just how to run a business with their honesty, prompt service and good communication. Many thanks everybody!

upfront about our requirements – we will be sharing the house as flatmates – the kids are adults. Between work commitments and my ‘private life’ I’m generally not home a couple of nights a week. The very short version of the interview goes like this: Firstly, I was asked about the supervision of the ‘kids’ when I’m not home, which led to how many nights a week will I be away from home and when push came to shove and I asked why my private life was any business of anyone’s but my own – was asked “are you just going on the lease to get your ‘kids’ a house?” Me “Um, no I need a place to sleep at night. Have a base. I think your line of questioning is getting very invasive.” The same line of questioning went on for a bit and out of sheer frustration and anger I asked if it was a lease requirement to give them a roster for the days I’d be home and the ones I wouldn’t be. The interview ended fairly abruptly after I said the whole process was so frustrating that it made me feel like renewing my real estate ticket to set up a business that offered customer service to people that are time poor and need to find a rental property. Consequently we didn’t get the house, the owner of the agency stands by the invasive line of questioning and I’ve learned that honesty means stuff all these days and quite possibly, is not the best policy! Anyone got a house to rent?
THANKS to Rotary for making available the liberty swing at Town Beach Park. Our son hasn’t been able to have a swing since he was a little boy, but we now take him to the liberty swing on a regular basis. The smile on his face says it all.
Thumbs Up TO Peter, the kind man that went to the time and trouble to free the magpie that was tangled in a tree at North Haven. A big thank you from all the distressed ladies and the magpie and chicks.

Thumbs Down TO the people who discard fishing line without thinking what harm it can cause to birds and other wildlife. Please dispose of it in a bin.

EXCUSE me for reminiscing a little, but I was brought up in the days where honesty was the best policy. I know times have changed and we supposedly live in a more progressive society, which quite frankly is in a sorry state. When did being upfront and honest exit the building? Many of you are aware that I’ve been looking for a rental property for the last few weeks. I’ve written about the lack of customer service I’ve experienced throughout the ordeal and this week it pains me that I have this update. Here’s the situation: My two adult children and I need to rent a pet-friendly, three bedroom house, (near TAFE, Base Hospital and the industrial area). We have a budget of around $450 per week, give or take. If possible we’d like a long lease of two and a half years. My 22-year-old son has worked full-time since he was 15 and my daughter (24) works as many hours as she can between full-time Uni and her placements at the hospital. I am obviously self-employed. We’ve been told we have good references and a great application – “you’ll be a shoe in!” Famous last words! Last week I was asked to attend an interview with the property manager from the same agency that had told me “you’ll be a shoe in”. Apparently the lady we’d been dealing with and had shown us houses to rent – and I’ll say right now, a fantastic person – can’t really make that call. So after about 5 weeks of going to viewings of various rental properties (having to close the office, take time off work etc.,) an interview is required. I was the only one who could attend due to the time frame, so off I went. Wow! Let’s just say, I was not expecting to be judged and interrogated! From the outset, we have been completely

Flying school’s 60th birthday From Page 1 Among their success stories is Matthew Baker who, as a young boy, would sit in the back of the Cessna 172 plane during HDFC’s monthly pilot proficiency days, and watch the pilots go through their emergency procedures. Matthew learnt to fly with HDFC and is now a Cathay Pacific pilot. There is Chris Higgins, a Wauchope boy, who learned to fly with Bob Needham in 1984 and is now a captain with Net Jets in America, as well as operating a flying school in the US. In 2016 Chris showed his appreciation to HDFC donating money towards two flying scholarships. Since the first flying scholarships were offered in 1961, there have been 31 recipients. Wauchope boy Jimi Ludriks was an early recipient, joining HDFC when he was just 12. He is now a Boeing 747 first officer with Cathay Pacific. In 2014, scholarship student Joanne Oreb became the youngest woman to go solo in HDFC’s 56-year history, aged just 15 years, 1 month and 11 days. Rod himself has been flying since he was 15 after he went reluctantly with his brother on a joyflight out of his hometown of Grafton. “I was afraid of heights and it was conditional on my sitting in the middle seat at the back, so I would not have to look out the window,” Rod says. “I wouldn’t even go on the ferris wheel at the local show,” he laughs. “It was my first time up in a plane, and I just loved it,” he recalls. “I went up twice more that day and then would hitchhike 20 miles into Grafton to take flying lessons. “It’s been a lifelong passion.”
Two words – ‘passion’ and ‘freedom’ sum up his love of flying and are what drive many pilots, according to Rod. It’s what club members find when they either take up their own birds, or hire one of the two aircraft owned by the HDFC. “Some members have their own planes, otherwise they share ownership of club aircraft without the worry of insurance, landing fees and so on,” says Rod. Ray Lind says pilots at HDFC are highly trained and regularly take part in pilot proficiency days, an initiative the club introduced to keep pilots at their peak. “Our club members are consistent winners in the tri-club competition usually held between HDFC, Taree, Maitland and, more recently, Kempsey,” Ray says. “The competition goes back to the ‘80s and involves tests such as forced landings, a river bash with steep turns at 600ft, and spot landing.” Ray said when teaching students to fly, he instilled in them to be methodical and careful; to double check and triple check. “They are the most important attributes for a pilot,” he says. While the focus is on the September 8 dinner, there are plans in progress for an open day at the club facility on October 14 when the public are invited to go ‘behind the scenes’. “People can look at our planes, and we’ll be showcasing of some of the aircraft which were built by our pilots,” says Rod. There will be trial introductory flights for $99, historic displays and other stands set up by associated clubs.
Love really was in the air
THERE was romance in the air three years ago, when new pilot Chris Watts surprised girlfriend Sage with a proposal (pictured above). While Sage might have had an inkling that Chris was getting ready to pop the question, her heart took wings when she discovered the lengths her boyfriend had gone to to ensure the proposal was truly special. For 18 months, Chris had been secretly learning to fly. Hastings District Flying Club captain and mentor Ray Lind recalls that when Chris approached him, asking whether it would be possible he learn to fly so he could propose to Sage in the club’s Foxbat plane, he did not hesitate. “Of course, I said ‘yes’,” recalls Ray. “The 18 months that followed were long arduous days as we worked in cahoots to build this romantic sequel. “Sometimes challenging weather conditions, Foxbat downtime and Chris’ busy work schedule were not the only challenges to
becoming a pilot. It was difficult for Chris to keep his secret from Sage, with the early morning starts and having to avoid taking calls from Sage while he was flying. “But Chris worked really hard, gained his Pilot Certificate on February 28 and finally, with enough solo hours, he was ready to put his romantic plan into action on May 9.” Chris took Sage out to the airport and into the Foxbat. Her curiosity turned to awe when she learned her boyfriend was a pilot, and that he was about to take her up and over Port Macquarie. But as the couple flew over Bonny Hills, Sage was in for an even bigger surprise. Written in huge letters on the sandy beach below, were the words ‘Marry Me, Sage’. Chris flew back to the airport and landed smoothly to propose on bended knee to Sage in front of the Foxbat. It was a proposal that certainly ended on a high.

Emissions aim well off course THE COWPER REPORT
With Luke Hartsuyker
Federal Member for Cowper
HIGH food prices are a big part of cost of living pressures that people on the Mid North Coast are enduring - and they are now under dire threat of being pushed sky high. The same people who want to push your power prices up to cut greenhouse gas emissions now have their sights set on making our farmers reduce theirs. Farms do produce a lot of emissions. Agriculture is responsible for 12% of all Australian emissions, or about the same amount as manufacturing. That is why they are being targeted. But hold on a minute. Farmers have been huge contributors to Landcare, one of our great environmental success stories, for decades. They have widely adopted no-till farming, to avoid emissions from ploughing. They are using better fertilisers much more sparingly. By doing so they are sequestering vast amounts of carbon, increasing soil moisture, and reducing emissions. The fact is emissions from agriculture are in steep decline, and have been for years. Farm emissions have fallen 74% since 1990. In NSW in 1990 agriculture was responsible for almost 30% of greenhouse gases. It is now just 5%. The reason for these huge falls is very simple. Historically, most emissions from our farmlands came from carbon dioxide emitted when land was cleared to plant more crops, or to run more sheep or cattle. Since the early 1990’s, clearing has been dramatically reduced, especially in NSW and Queensland, by very restrictive regulations. The restrictions were aimed at cutting farm emissions, and they have indeed plummeted. No other sector of the economy has come within a bull’s roar of such a massive contribution to reducing Australia’s emissions. If the politically correct win the day and launch any more attacks on farm emissions our farmers will be much poorer and the cost of food will go through the roof.
Farmers help is top priority HELPING Our Farmers: The NSW Government has announced a $500 million Emergency Drought Relief Package which will help our struggling farmers across New South Wales. This package now takes the Government’s drought support to more than $1 billion, with $584 million announced in June 2018. With 99 per cent of the State now in drought and farmers facing one of the driest winters on record, we know this package is essential not just for our farmers but the continued productivity of our regional communities. A major feature of this package is the introduction of transport subsidies, which recognises that in many areas people have been forced to cart fodder. As part of the emergency funding, waivers will apply on Local Land Services annual rates, fixed charges on water licences, registration costs for class 1 agricultural vehicles and interest for existing Farm Innovation Fund loans. The Emergency Relief Package provides key support in priority areas including: • Drought Transport Subsidies; (Subsidies will be backdated to include an additional prorated amount for expenses incurred in the previous six months. Up to 50% of the full cost of transporting fodder, livestock to agistment,

slaughter, sale and water for stock will be made available to eligible farmers.) • Waived Local Land Services annual rates, fixed water charges in rural and regional areas, as well as class 1 agricultural vehicle registration; • Support services including counselling and mental health; • Community assistance including water cartage and drought-related road infrastructure improvements; • Animal welfare and stock disposal. The NSW Rural Assistance Authority began processing applications on Monday. For more information on the NSW Government’s emergency drought relief package visit: www. droughthub.nsw.gov.au. Local Support for Farmers: It is wonderful to see so many local community organisations promoting innovative ways to raise money for our struggling farmers.
CANBERRA CONNECTIONS With Dr David Gillespie Federal MP for Lyne
LOCAL sporting groups across the region are encouraged to apply for funding under a new national $29.7million program being established by the Federal Coalition Government aimed at upgrading community sport infrastructure. The Community Sport Infrastructure grant program would enable sport and community organisations to apply for grants up to $500,000 to upgrade sporting infrastructure in 2018-19. Local sporting groups should consider projects that would help build participation in physical activity, community partnerships and inclusiveness. I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage sport and community groups to collaborate and think about projects that could enhance our facilities in our local community. Improving lighting, playing surfaces and accessibility for different ages and genders are just some of the ways sporting facilities can be made safer and more appealing. Applications will remain open until September 28 and more information on the Community Sport Infrastructure grant program can be found at: www.sportaus. gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/677879/ CSI_Grant_Program_guidelines.pdf
Popular quotes trace to ‘Bard’ TO be or not to be. That is the question. Whenever I hear that comment, I think of William Shakespeare. I don’t know about you, but that’s who I think of. It was in Hamlet, Act 3, Scene 1. The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, often shortened to Hamlet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare at an uncertain date between 1599 and 1602. Set in Denmark, the play dramatises the revenge Prince Hamlet is called to wreak upon his uncle, Claudius, by the ghost of Hamlet’s father, King Hamlet. Claudius had murdered his own brother and seized the throne, also marrying his deceased brother’s widow. Just in case you haven’t heard of William Shakespeare, Shakespeare also spelled Shakspere, by name Bard of Avon or Swan of Avon, (baptized April 26, 1564, Stratfordupon-Avon, Warwickshire, England - died April 23, 1616, Stratford-upon-Avon), English poet, dramatist, and actor, often called the English national poet and considered by many to be the greatest dramatist of all time. Shakespeare penned many quotes, many of which we still use today. Here are some of them: All the world’s a stage. As you like it, Act 2, Scene 7. The idea that all the world’s a stage was already clichéd when Shakespeare wrote As You Like It.

FROM THE MAYOR A weekly conversation with Mayor Peta Pinson If you’ve been out and about in the Camden Haven during the past week, you may have noticed some new roadside signs that have been popping up, welcoming us to our local towns and villages. How great do they look ... and I’m so excited to see them installed. The signs really do capture the character of our area, create a sense of pride in where we live and are a great welcome for those visiting our region, or simply passing through. From the iconic pelican in North Haven, Henry Kendall himself and the book in Kendall, and the sailing boat in Lakewood – they are so much more than just signs, they represent who we are, what’s precious to us and capture the fabric of each local community. What a feeling of pride I get every time I see one of our new
pmhc.nsw.gov.au signs, and it encourages me to want to learn more about our local heritage and history, which is particularly timely in this our bicentenary year. So make sure you keep an eye out for our new signs, and more signs that we’ll be installing this financial year. And for a bit of fun, what about a game you can play with the kids, family and friends. See how many signs you can find … can you identify the icons on each one and what they mean? It might be a fun way to learn more about each local community. We’re going to be installing more signs in other areas in the future, and once we’ve finished in the Camden Haven we’ll be moving on to the Wauchope and hinterland areas, with signs that represent those communities too. ‘Signing’ off for this week! By SUE PATERICK THIS year’s Head to Head Walk Run on Sunday, August 19, promises to be a vivid event with participants asked to wear rainbows colours to support community organisation Baylin’s Gift. The Head to Head is the Crescent Head Lions Club’s major fundraising event each year. Its beach course follows Crescent’s shoreline and there is a race distance to suit every level of fitness. Participants can compete in a five, 10, 15 or 20-kilometre round trip along golden sands on the lookout for whales, dolphins, sea eagles and brahminy kites. Its members will be supporting all participants along the way with water, sunscreen and fruit to keep everyone hydrated and sun safe. There will also be two support vehicles available to drive anyone back to the start if they are tired or injured. What a great way to spend a Sunday morning either strolling, jogging or running along Crescent Head’s gorgeous beach, happy in the knowledge that all proceeds are going to a deserving community organisation making a difference to many people’s lives. Registration for this fun and worthy event closes on Wednesday August 15 so go to www. headtoheadwalkrun.org.au and follow the prompts. Organisers ask participants to plan ahead for race day and be at the registration tents by 7am on race morning to collect a bib and wrist band, have their registration marked off and do some individual or group warm-up exercises. The 2018 Head to Head Walk Run will be begin at 8am sharp. Lions Club officials want to remind the public not bring their pets for the safety of other participants at this smoke-free event. The Crescent Head Lions Club was chartered in May, 1976.
During the last five years the Club has distributed over $68,000 in direct financial support to schools, charitable organisations and groups, and Lions Foundations throughout the local and broader community. In 2018 the Club will continue to support Baylin’s Gift, which describes itself as a community organisation committed to educating and supporting young people in the area of mental health and diversity within the Macleay Valley. Baylin’s Gift focuses specifically on depression and anxiety, suicide awareness and LGBTI issues. The organisation’s aim is to provide education and support to promote resilience and a mentally-

Locals display their visions FOUR different stories, visions and voices of four local artists will be on exhibition at the Macleay Valley Community Art Gallery at historic Gladstone this August. Entitled 4ART, the exhibition will run from Wednesday, August 8, to Sunday, September 2, with many of the artworks focused on our beautiful land and sea scapes. The gallery is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10.30am to 4pm and one of these talented artists will be present each day. When the exhibition closes on Saturday, September 1, and Sunday, September 2, they will also hold a Meet the Artists’ weekend from midday until 4pm and invite the public to come and enjoy some wine, nibbles and a chat. “It’s a great way to find out what makes the

artists passionate about art and their mediums,” said artist Robyn Jackson. Exhibiting alongside Robyn will be Howard Piggott who taught Visual Arts as a head teacher for more than 30 years. His work is a celebration of Australian life and is rich in colour and bold flowing lines. Howard has been working on a series of acrylic paintings based on the remarkable capacity of Australian plants to propagate and regenerate through cool burns and smoke. Scott Jackson’s work depicts the beauty and emotion of the landscape using a range of mediums including acrylic, ink, oil, collage and gold leaf. Many of Scott’s works are textured yet fluid and his work captures the quintessential mood of the Australian landscape. Louise Keough makes art images to enhance her daily sensory experience, like catching a night sky, watching the changing light and finding an ever-deeper appreciation of the coastal beauty right outside her door. Her work explores digital-image making and transforming her photographs into the work of art that she has imagined in her mind. “What impresses me is the deep beauty of the natural world,” she said. “The people in my landscapes are small but important, seen as shadows or details in a much larger fabric which sustains us.” Robyn Jackson’s art on both silk and canvas also explores her connections with the landscape and she describes her work as intuitive. “Colours often flow one to the next with a story or mood of their own,” she said. “My art becomes a part of my dreaming and my need to document graphically the beauty of line, shape, rich colour and my feelings for the land.” Robyn takes her inspiration from the beach, her travels and her garden.

Demolition can’t happen too soon By BARBARA DYER
Wildlife corridor at Queens Lake
Vital work on wildlife corridors AREAS of the Camden Haven have been receiving some much needed bush regeneration in recent months, that will assist in protecting important wildlife corridors throughout the area. The works have seen the removal of dense weeds, including large stands of Camphor Laurels in important corridors of vegetation that connect Dooragan National Park with the estuarine foreshore. In addition, narrow but vital strips of vegetation that extend from Queens Lake, through Stingray Creek to Gogleys Lagoon and the ocean have also received attention. Council’s Ecologist Rebecca MontagueDrake said the diversity and abundance of wildlife that inhabits these corridors is just amazing. “To know that we have a whole range of threatened species, such as gliders and forest owls that inhabit these parcels of bush so close
to suburbia is wonderful, and we want to do all we can to ensure that the bushland in our study area is restored,” Ms Montague-Drake said. The regeneration work commenced in 2016, when Port Macquarie-Hastings Council received funding to assist with the regeneration from the North Coast Local Land Services and the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage’s Coast and Estuaries fund. The funding has enabled Council to employ a project officer to undertake the on-ground works, and to work closely with, and support the Dunbogan Bushcare Group and the Queens Lake Landcare group. “Having the experience and guidance of a project officer has increased our capacity to undertake tasks that may have been a bit arduous for our group, and has also greatly increased our knowledge about bush regeneration,” said Joy Rodwell from the Queens Lake Landcare group.

PORT Macquarie Residents Action Network are celebrating the news that the Food For Less building on the corner of William and Short streets is to finally be demolished. RAN treasurer Chris McLoughlin said it was a victory for the group and the community. “It’s been an issue for us for many years,” said Ms McLoughlin. “We have written many, many letters to Woolworths. “We have dealt with no less than three Senior Development Managers in that time.” But while dealing with various people at the top, the RAN has remained singular in its demand for action. And now they have it. “We received an email from the current Woolworths Senior Development Manager (NSW) last week and we’re delighted,” said Ms McLoughlin. “The email said: ‘We have sought and received Council approval for the demolition of the existing building; we have since receipt of this, issued to suitably qualified contractors a tender package for the pricing of those demolition works, of which we anticipate replies by the end of this month; and following receipt and assessment of those tenders, we would like to be in a position to be commencing on site with the demolition by September of this year. In terms of our long term plans for the site, this remains under review, however we remain committed to Port
Macquarie and are exploring all options to bring a local Woolworths supermarket to the area’. “Once again RAN is managing to achieve some really good results for the community in the Hastings area. “This derelict building has existed as a total eyesore for far too long. “This is a great result with assurances the demolition will begin in September.” The tender process has closed and it is expected the successful tender will be announced soon. While residents will see the fences go up and the graffitied eyesore come down, Ms McLoughlin pointed out that it could potentially be another five years before something replaced it. “They have up to five years to do something; hopefully they won’t be crazy enough to wait that long,” she said. “In the short term though, it will just be an improvement to see that hideous building demolished. “We just want to see it gone. It’s been too long. “However, I doubt a Woolworths will go there. In my opinion the best site for a new Woolies would be at the back of Port Central.” The Food For Less building has been vacant since April 5, 2012. Ms McLoughlin said RAN expected to hold another public forum on October 22 and early in 2019 would hold two meet-the-candidates forums for the State election in March and the Federal election around May.

Getting the Right Advice for your SMSF Self Managed Super Funds (SMSF’s) are an increasingly popular vehicle to plan and provide for retirement. They can be a flexible, tax effective structure helping you achieve your retirement and estate planning goals. However, SMSF’s are not for everyone, among other things they require careful consideration prior to their establishment, constant review of investments and last but certainly not least regulatory compliance. SMSF’s require regular involvement by you. Now, I love my GP but I wouldn’t trust him to do heart Surgery and so it is also with Self Managed Super Funds, If you want sound, professional & effective advice regarding your SMSF, you need to get it from a SMSF Specialist. You need to know what you can & can’t do in a SMSF so you don’t get yourself into hot water with the ATO. I’ve seen easy and honest mistakes made by trustees, simply because of lack of guidance or knowing the rules at the time. These mistakes can be costly and sometimes difficult to rectify, and ATO penalties being imposed on trustees for breaching the rules make it more important than ever that you have guidance from a SMSF Specialist Advisor™ at hand. The ATO encourages trustees to work closely with their SMSF advisers to not only ensure your complying and meeting your trustee obligations, but working with a specialist will help optimise the benefits of having a SMSF putting you in the best possible position to achieve your retirement goals in the SMSF. At Maven Advisors we provide services in all aspects of SMSF’s including setup, administration, licenced advice and compliance giving you confidence in the specialised and personalised services provided. From left: Sandy Hayes, Helen Cornhill, Marion McKay, John Hayes, from the Lifeline Shop Gordon Street, Port Macquarie, are dressed to de-stress
Take stress out of your routine CUSTOMERS who visited the Lifeline Shop in Port Macquarie recently may have noticed something a little different about the staff. Stress Down Day, which took place on Tuesday, July 24, was all about promoting happiness and raising awareness of suicide prevention. “Our Lifeline office takes part in Stress Down Day every year but this was the first time the staff in the Gordon Street Lifeline Shop took part in it,” said Helen Cornhill, Lifeline Port Macquarie Shop Manager. “There was about eight staff working that day and we all dressed in our most comfortable clothes – pyjamas and dressing gowns.” Stress affects people both physically and mentally. This campaign not only promotes happiness, encourages help seeking and raises awareness of suicide prevention, but it also helps to raise money to cover the cost of Lifeline’s 24 hour telephone counseling line – 13 11 14.
“I think everyone has had times in their life when they’ve been stressed, we all experience it,” Helen said. “I think we live a lot faster now too than we used to so that also leads to people feeling more stressed. “Stress Down Day was really successful in our shop, we really had a lot of fun. The customers also had fun, they laughed more than ever and they thought it was a wonderful idea. “We also really wanted to push the point of preventing suicide. We will definitely be doing it again next year.” Stress Down Day is an annual fundraising campaign held in July where people all across Australia are encouraged to get involved in stress-reducing activities such as dressing silly, dressing comfortably, dressing up, or down, and making a donation to Lifeline.
Brilliant violinist returns THE Kendall National Violin Competition will commence celebrations for its 20th birthday with the presentation of a benefit concert at the Kendall School of Arts on Sunday August 12 at 2.30 pm. The brilliant, young violinist Mitzi Gardner, who enchanted Kendall audiences in 2017 at the finals of the competition will return to Kendall to perform dazzling virtuosic violin works by Wieniawski, Saint-Saens and Corrigiolano. She will be joined in this performance by artistic leaders of the competition, Jeanell Carrigan and Goetz Richter and the international cellist Leslie Tan. Leslie Tan is a member of the acclaimed Tang String Quartet resident at the Yong Sieh Toh Conservatorium in Singapore. “It seems like the stars are aligning for Kendall, welcoming back a brilliant young finalist from 2017 and at the same time performing Schubert’s blissful piano trio with Leslie Tan from Singapore and Jeanell Carrigan will make for a sublime afternoon of music,” says Goetz
Richter, artistic director of the Kendall National Violin Competition. The performance on August 12 in Kendall is part of a busy schedule for Mitzi Gardner. Mitzi will perform as a soloist with the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra before heading to London in September to commence her studies as a scholarship student at the Royal Academy. The finals of the 20th Kendall National Violin Competition will be held on September 15 at the Kendall School of Arts. All proceeds from the Concert on August 12 will benefit the competition. Additional donations to the competition are tax-deductible as the competition is a registered charity. For further information about donating to the Kendall National Violin Competition go to www. kendallviolin.org.au or contact Mavis Barnes mavis.barnes@bigpond.com or Ph. 02-6559 4339.

German fun coming to SWR THE Seabreeze Beach Hotel at South West Rocks is about to take on a distinct German flavor. Its 11-day ‘German Fest’ at Seabreeze Hotel’ will coincide with the Sculptures in the Gaol at the nearby historic Trial Bay Gaol. “Our German Fest has been going for 13 years now and it’s all about experiencing German food and drink,” said Natursha Douglas, Events Coordinator at the Seabreeze Beach Hotel. “The Sculptures in the Gaol is a fantastic event which showcases the German history and culture for the month and so we decided to have a German Fest in conjunction with it.” There’s one thing in particular Germans are famous for – their beer. “The dining room hall will be transformed into an Oktoberfest setting with German beers on tap, people dressed up in German clothes, and German bands for entertainment. “Each year we have Bucket Brewery, our local brewery, who make a special German batch.” There will be three main dining hall experiences which will turn the hotel into a Bavarian heaven. “Our dining room will be turned into a beer hall where there will be long tables, Bavarian flags, German games, and Oktoberfest outfits to match,” said Natursha. “We also have some really great German entertainment coming from Sydney – the Tirolean Echoes, and the Polka Boys.” German Fest will take place from Thursday, August 23, to Sunday, September 2. OUR community has once again been recognised for its outstanding community cultural events, with Artwalk and Youth Week winning major awards at the 2018 NSW Local Government Week Awards. At the recent awards ceremony Port Macquarie-Hastings Council took out the prestigious ‘Leo Kelly OAM Arts and Culture Award’. This award recognises Councils who are leaders in arts and culture and have excelled in strategic policy, planning and delivery of cultural experiences. Council were also joint-recipients for ‘Best Ongoing Commitment to Local Youth Week’, which follows on from last year’s achievement which saw Council recognised for the “Best Local Youth Week Program’. General Manager Craig Swift-McNair said it was great to see Council’s efforts in creating
inclusive social and cultural experiences for our community being recognised. “Since it began in 2016, Artwalk has grown to become one of the most popular attractions on our local event calendar, with more than 11,000 people enjoying the evening in 2018,” said Mr Swift-McNair. ArtWalk brought the Port Macquarie CBD to life in April, providing a night of sensory delights where our community discovered local artists, creative spaces and experiences that showcased our vibrant local cultural scene. The one night event injected more than $847,000 into our local economy which is an increase of more than 230% since the event started 3 years ago. “Our Youth Week activities continue to set the benchmark in NSW, having been recognised for the second year in a row, which is an incredible achievement and

footytips
Will Roosters be crowing? WELL, we warmed you, but of course did not take our own advice. Your Local Independent warned tipsters last weekend that the ‘alsorans’ could have a big say over these final rounds. And that is exactly what happened last weekend. Bulldogs over the Broncos. Manly over the Sharks. And of course that was just the tip of the iceberg. The upsets kept coming: Rabbits over the Storm. Warriors over Dragons. It was another tough weekend on the tipping charts. Well, it doesn’t get any easier this weekend. There are just four games to go and plenty of top eight positions still in the balance. Cowboys v Broncos (Thursday, August 9, 7.50pm, 1300SMILES Stadium, Townsville): Broncos have a tough one to return to the winning ranks. The ladder positions suggest that Brisbane should canter through this one, but nothing would be further from the truth. The clashes between these two Queensland teams almost always reach epic heights. The Cowboys may be at the equal bottom of the ladder, but have the cattle to cause an upset. Brisbane stumbled badly against the Bulldogs last weekend and need to get back on the horse here. Your Local Independent tips: Broncos Warriors v Knights (Friday, August 10, 6pm, Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland): The Warriors found some badly needed form against the Dragons last weekend and must continue that this weekend. They have a few injury/ suspension concerns, but should have enough in the tank to account for the Knights. Newcastle have their own injury concerns. However it is hard
to imagine the Warriors allowing this home game to go missing. Your Local Independent tips: Warriors Rabbitohs v Roosters (Friday, August 10, 7.55pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): Wow. Buckle up! This is shaping as one of the games of the season. The Rabbits made everyone sit up and take notice when they accounted for the Storm last weekend. Now they have to back up against another team considered by many as grand final certainties. This will be a key game for finals momentum. The bookies have Rabbitohs as very slight favourites early. However the gas they spent last weekend will be crucial. Your Local Independent tips: Roosters Titans v Panthers (Saturday, August 11, 3pm, Cbus Super Stadium, Gold Coast): The Panthers found the way back to the tryline last weekend with a 40-31 win over the Raiders. They will need to do more of that this weekend to ensure they stay in the race for a top four spot. The Titans are impossible to predict. They smashed the Warriors then went missing against the Eels last weekend. Your Local Independent tips: Panthers Sea Eagles v Bulldogs (Saturday, August 11, 5.30pm, McGrath Foundation Stadium, Manly, Sydney): A tough one despite both teams being also-rans. They both had impressive wins last weekend – Manly edging home over the Sharks and the Dogs in a big upset win over the Broncos. The bookies are giving early favouritism to the Sea Eagles. This is
Sharon Griffiths
a home game for them with Lottoland being renamed McGrath Foundation Stadium in honour of the Women in League round. Your Local Independent tips: Sea Eagles Eels v Dragons (Saturday, August 11, 7.35pm, ANZ Stadium, Sydney): If ever the Dragons needed to stand up, this is the game. They have gone from genuine premiership contenders to shot ducks in many people’s minds. However the faithful still believe they ‘can do it’. They fell short last weekend against the Warriors and have won just one of their past five outings. The Eels may be at the bottom of the table, but have plenty of bite. The Dragons need to get their heads back on. Their roster hasn’t changed, just their mindset. Your Local Independent tips: Dragons Raiders v Wests Tigers (Sunday, August 12, 2pm, GIO Stadium, Canberra): The Tigers fans are looking at a season of ‘what ifs’. Started well, slumped, then have started to come good too late. They accounted for the Knights last weekend and their form line suggests they should take this one. It is ninth (Tigers) v tenth. Mathematically the Tigers could sneak into the eight if they won all of their remaining four games and one of the teams on eighth stopped in their tracks. So, they have more to play for then the Raiders. However both teams have been too inconsistent to back them with any confidence. Your Local Independent tips: Wests Tigers Storm v Sharks (Sunday,

August 12, 4.10pm, AAMI Park, Melbourne): Good one to finish off the round. Both teams coming off losses, so no shortage of motivation to get a win here. Hard to see the Storm dropping two in a row. They can take back top spot on percentage if they win and the Rabbits fall on Friday night. Your Local Independent tips: Storm
