The Conduta is an aque-/gas-/electro-/tv-/telephone-duct for 1.200 families. Designed by Alvaro Siza in 1977 as a pipeline built in ordinary concrete blocks and raised to the height of the roofs, the infrastructure defines the foundation principle of Quinta da Malagueira in Evora and clearly establishes another scalea public and monumental one - in relation to housing.
The Conduta o ers an opportunity to reflect on the use of water in the public space. Siza left some free spaces between the blocks of buildings and the aqueduct, suggesting a later occupation of those interstices with collective and commercial programs.
Some 45 years later, we imagine articulating the Conduta into a system of water facilities. Going beyond purely technical/engineering issues, we explore symbolic, ritual, and social values related to the distribution, access, and use of water in the urban environment.
The possibilities o ered by the Conduta are explored through an accumulation of examples and later applied as design hypotheses represented through axonometric drawings.
