From the desk of Doug Bolton

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. The parties are over, presents are unwrapped, the family has gone home, and we can now focus on the year ahead. I would like to thank Jim Hackett, Michael Apy and Pete White for their service on the Board for the past three years. Each of these gentlemen brought something different to the Board, all with great value. At the Annual Meeting we welcomed three new members to the Port Royal Plantation Board: John Simpson, Carl Nelson and Larry Landry. Kaye Black was elected to a second three-year term. The first order of Board business conducted after the annual meeting was to elect officers for 2018: Doug Bolton President ; Don Blank, Vice President; Kaye Black, Secretary; and Bob Turner, Treasurer. An orientation for new Board Members will be held in January to go over the Bylaws, Covenants, Association policies & procedures, as well as board responsibilities. Because we have an independent nominating committee, it is not uncommon for many of the Board Members to not know each other before they are elected. I love to see new faces on the Board and I enjoy getting to work with other residents who care about our community. Independent thought and a variety of personal and professional backgrounds are the keys to fruitful Board discussions and responsible decisions. My job as President is to make sure the meetings proceed in an efficient manner and that all Board Member’s opinions are heard. We don’t always agree on everything, and different opinions and perspectives lead to interesting discussions and better decisions. We occasionally form committees or task forces to look deeper into topics and/or proposals. These include non-Board Member Landowners with specific interests and experience. As President I do not attend most committee meetings, but I do review their results and recommendations with the rest of the Board. Our goals in 2018 are quite focused –have no hurricanes and finish the Beach House. Your Board and Staff appreciate your patience and support as we enter a new year of opportunities for our community. We value your comments, questions, and suggestions. I wish you the best for the holidays and the New Year.

PR Beach House Project Update Completed items: ● Contract with Graves Construction finalized ● Single-phase power transformer relocated and temporary power established ● Tree pruning ● Final asphalt excavating ● Contractor site mobilization Items to be completed over the next month: ● The main 6-inch water line must be relocated and the new tap for the water meters will be set along with the sprinkler system water supply. ● Site grading ● Begin setting the helical screwed-in piles. ● Layout forms for piling foundation. ● Palmetto Electric will be installing 3-phase power over the course of the project, which is necessary for the elevator and HVAC efficiency. For everyone’s protection during construction please do not enter the site. Please avoid this area and use Ft. Walker or Steam Gun for convenient beach access points. There will be limited parking near the playground, but from 7 am to 6 pm the area will be under construction and access may be restricted. Drainage and Ponds: Over the past month a contractor has been working in the Association ponds removing vegetation from the water and cutting back vegetation to a 90-degree angle. This work was well over due and the results will ensure positive drainage. The contractor has started removing the vegetation along some of the drainage channels and will continue to do so into January. The Town of Hilton Head will begin the main drainage line cleaning from the pond at 278 working back towards Barony Lane. This work will continue over 3 months until the main drainage line is cleaned out. During this time, you may notice some changes in the ponds or waterways (raising and lowering water levels); please do not be alarmed. Some areas will be blocked for short periods of time while they work their way through the channel. Maintenance Requests: Over the last month a new maintenance work order system has been implemented to help prioritize needs throughout the community. If you have made an e-mail or verbal maintenance request which has not been addressed, please complete the online form found HERE, on the home page at portroyalplantion.net or email maintenance@portroyalplantation.net so the work can be properly prioritized. The on-site staff and contractors are managing the work orders and good progress is being made throughout the community. On-site staff is addressing regular maintenance items and will be working their way around the community cleaning the mailboxes over the next 30 days. Thank you for your patience as we get caught up on these items.

While completing the annual reviews for the Security Department, I realized how many years of experience our staff has here at Port Royal. Lt. Jones has been at Port Royal Plantation since March of 1994. Lt. Logwood has been at Port Royal for more than 20 years. Officer White and Officer Smart have a combined 30 years with the PRP Security Department. Your security department has approximately 94 years of experience at Port Royal Plantation, averaging over 10 years per officer! The next time you pass them at the gate or in the community tell them congratulations!

A New Addition The Security Department recently purchased a radar speed limit sign which we placed at the gate house to test its battery life and accuracy. We will be setting the sign at various locations in the community in January. The sign gives us data on speeds, traffic flow and it will date and time stamp the radar read. Please be mindful of the 25-mph speed limit as you travel throughout the community. Page 5

Administration Office It’s 2018 and the Administration Office is starting the year off with a bang, literally! We are beginning a small renovation process to fix flooring issues, and increase accessibility by moving the Conference Room from the second floor to the first floor of the building. During this time, some staff members may be shuffling offices and we’ll be re-arranging phone lines and computers. Please be patient with us as we move through this process. After the work is done, be sure to come check out our new digs!

We 109 South Port Royal Drive currently have 15 new homes under construction and 3 still Additions 2 reviewed & 1 approved in the review process. But that’s nothing like 10 Planters Row it was several years ago when Port Royal Alterations / Plantation was getting started. Between 1959 3 reviewed & approved Minor Changes and 1972, there were 78 homes built in here, 130 Coggins Point Road and in 1973, there were 42 homes built! And 24 North Port Royal Drive most all of those homes are still here today! But we’ve slowed down as we gradually build 69 Ft. Walker Drive out, and we still have 58 vacant lots. Repaints

Friends of the Arboretum In recent months there have been many questions about what’s going on in the Arboretum. The basic structure of much of the wetlands, dry lands, and paths has been restored. Several existing plantings have been cleared of debris and some areas enhanced with additions to existing plant groupings. Irrigation lines have been restored so that future development efforts will not be wasted. The “Friends of the Arboretum” needs to be reorganized, with an appropriate structure and official membership to attain the goal of getting the area certified as an “arboretum”. The “Friends” can act as volunteers to add new

plantings, create and conduct educational opportunities, showcasing Port Royal’s origins of lowcountry terrain, native vegetation, and wildlife. The “Friends of the Arboretum” will be meeting at 10:00 am on Monday, January 29th, in the member room at the Port Royal Clubhouse. Please join us with your ideas and enthusiasm for a review of the history, status, and proposed future of Port Royal’s Arboretum. This is our opportunity to truly develop the Arboretum as a real enhancement to our community and a one-of-a-kind exhibit in the lowcountry. Contact Tammie Blank at Tamsen@att.net to RSVP.

A Visit to Fish Haul Farm by the Clemson Master Gardeners The Clemson Master Gardener class made a visit to our community garden. As part of their training they were interested to learn how to manage a Community Garden and they were quite impressed with our operation. Yes, we are very lucky to have this amenity available to all. If you not familiar, our gardens are comprised of fortythree, six by twelve foot raised beds. There is an electrified deer fence, rabbit fence and fishing line crisscrossed overhead to deter crows and other birds from picking our crops. Each plot has water available and there is a farm cottage allowing storage of farmers’ tools and fertilizers. This facility is available to all Port Royal Plantation residents who wish to grow their own New Board: vegetables, flowers or plants. If you are interested in Nigel Jones, President becoming a member please contact Carrie Wilbur at Carrie Wilbur , Vice-President cwilbur3355@gmail.com . Fran Baselice , Treasurer I have been the President for the past two years and it Donna Renbarger, Secretary has been a wonderful experience. 2018 starts the term of a new Board of Directors for Fish Haul Farm.
