University of Portsmouth BA(Hons) Graphic Design UCAS COURSE CODE: W210 DURATION // 3 years full time - or 4 years sandwich, with work placement. Entry // 240-300 points to include a minimum of 240 points from A Levels. Applicants may be subject to interview. A portfolio is essential.
Introduction to Graphic Design // This covers the historical, contemporary and cultural context of Graphic Design. What is Graphic Design? Who are the influential designers, studios, and major design movements?
Why take this course // This course offers you the opportunity to explore graphic design through a range of digital and traditional media. The curriculum is based around thematic teaching with a strong emphasis on research informed design practice.
Fundamentals of Design Practice // This project deals with typographic design and principles of design layout, magazine and editorial design.
It will empower you with creative problem solving skills and technical knowledge that will enable you to join and contribute to the exciting, dynamic and constantly evolving world of media and design. General Information // During the course you will be introduced to book binding, screen printing and letterpress. We also have a variety of digital studios with Macs and PCs running industry-standard software, that is taught within units, such as Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Muse and Flash. Our design facilities can cater to whatever project you are working on, providing access to our range of digital printing facilities, including large format, photographic, sheet fed printers, dye sublimation and digital fabric printing. There are also facilities available for laser cutting and 3D printing. As well as offering a dynamic and creative studio space with excellent access to the Eldon campus facilities, we foster a friendly and welcoming environment where you are encouraged to interact with both tutors and your peers. Information Design // This unit introduces students to working with data sets and understanding semiotics. They design and create pictograms, isotypes, information design, data visualisation and infographics. Screen Design - Motion Graphics // This project concerns design for motion graphics, working with kinetic type and creating moving image/film title sequences. Research Informed Design Thinking // This project develops research informed design practice. You will be introduced to visual and textual research and design methodologies, processes and frameworks. Introduction to Visual Culture // We live in a society of visual communication, in both the domestic and public sphere. During this unit students explore the impact of the visualisation of culture in society.
Developing Design Practice // This project develops typography and layout design for different output methods i.e. continuous reading, books, posters, journals, screens. Interactive Screen Design // This concerns interactive web design and navigational structures and interface design, with a focus on interactive information design for a range of screen media output. Ethical Design // This project looks at responsibilities of the designer, the designer as author, protest graphics, sustainability and ethics within a cultural context. Prof Practice - Live Design Briefs // This unit asks students to answer a number of externally set projects or briefs and enter International design competitions such as YCN and PETA.
Major Project in Graphic Design // This is a major project on a personally determined theme, where students conduct extended research and developmental work towards designing a visual outcome (e.g. posters, book, website or motion graphic). Prof Practice - Design Briefs & Competitions // This unit involves short projects, the iSTD exam, RSA projects and international competition briefs set and judged by industry professionals. Prof Practice - Promotion & Employability // In preparation for the world of work,students design and write a CV, apply for jobs and produce self promotion items that include a printed and online portfolio. They also prepare and design the promotion and public exhibition of their work in the annual Portsmouth and London shows.
Prof Practice - Identity & Branding // In this project students work in teams and formulate an identity for their own Graphic Design studio and design a range of promotional material in a variety of formats.
Prof Practice -Design Studio Practice // This unit encourages students to extend the content of their portfolio by engaging with client briefs and helps students to cost and plan for required deliverables. They complete at least one client led design brief and can also elect to undertake “Adobe Certified Associate� preparation and examination.
Visual Culture & Dissertation Proposal // Students have a choice to study of one of the following; Design, style, and identity / Technology and the image / Cult films and postmodernism / Issues of representation / Visions of the body.
Dissertation / Major Research Project // Exploring a chosen theme within a historical and theoretical context, students complete a written dissertation or produce a research led practical project with a report and visual outcome.
