University of Portsmouth BA(Hons) Graphic Design Why take this course? This course offers you the opportunity to explore graphic design through a range of digital and traditional media. The curriculum is based around thematic teaching with a strong emphasis on research informed design practice. It will empower you with creative problem solving skills and technical knowledge that will enable you to join and contribute to the exciting, dynamic and constantly evolving world of media and design.
Year One Introduction to Graphic Design An introduction to graphic design’s historical, contemporary and cultural context, examining the purpose and uses of the practice. Typography and Layout An introduction to the key principles of typography and layout. Information Design An introduction to working with data sets and key concepts in visual representation. It highlights the importance of content-driven design and the relevance of quantitative and qualitative information. Screen Design – Motion Graphics Learn about design principles for motion graphic sequences through the application of industrystandard software and technological processes. Research-Informed Design Thinking This module introduces you to research-informed design practice and thinking. Introduction to Visual Culture An introduction to visual analysis through the framework of visual culture.
Year Two Editorial Design Engage with the aspects of graphic design needed for print publications, such as books and journals. User Experience Design Get a comprehensive overview of the user experience design process, and familiarity with the methods, concepts, and techniques used to make user experience design an integral part of developing digital experiences. Ethical Design Consider the cultural position and ethical responsibilities of graphic designers. Professional Practice – Live Design Briefs Produce and present a portfolio of work in response to a professionally-set design brief or competition. You’ll also be encouraged to submit your work to design competitions. Professional Practice – Identity and Branding Work with a small team of other students to design a brand identity in response to a given brief. You will then apply your design across a range of branded materials and communication platforms. Visual Culture and Dissertation Proposal – Choice of 5 Options
Year Three Major Project in Graphic Design – Research and Development Conduct in-depth research into an area of your choice, building upon the experience, knowledge and skills you have developed through the course. Major Project in Graphic Design – Resolution and Presentation Transform the research you undertook in ‘Major Project In Graphic Design - Research and Development’ into a range of designed outcomes. Professional Practice – Design Briefs and Competitions Engage with internationally recognised professional societies and organisations. Professional Practice – Design Studio Practice Experience freelance design studio practice and build your confidence in negotiating with clients. Professional Practice – Promotion and Employability Prepare yourself for your career by creating your CV, designing digital and real-world self-promotion material, and promoting your participation in annual shows. Visual Culture – Dissertation or Research Project You’ll produce a significant piece of written work on a subject that fascinates you, with the support of your supervisor. Or produce a practice-based research project combining theory and practice.
