EXCLUSIONS You have the right to appeal to the Governors against a panel decision to permanently exclude you from the University. There are several ways in which a student can be excluded from University; the following procedure deals with the exclusion which is based on the result of a disciplinary hearing.
How to Appeal? You will need to write a statement titled ‘Statement of appeal against permanent exclusion’ to the Clerk of the Board of Governors at:
Care of Sally Hartley Clerk to the Board of Governors University House Winston Churchill Avenue Portsmouth PO1 2UP Your statement must include the following: Titled: Statement of appeal against permanent exclusion • • • • •

Must be dated It must be signed The statement must be handed into the Clerk within 14 days from when it was decided that you would be excluded. The statement must state the reason why you think you shouldn’t be excluded, for example a medical reason. If there is a reason, you should provide evidence to support what you are claiming. For example, a doctors note.
What happens after you have submitted your statement? If you meet the necessary criteria in your statement, your appeal will be valid. A committee of 3 or more Governors, who don’t have a direct interest in your case is formed. This committee will then consider all of the evidence. If they need additional information, they will arrange for an enquiry panel to be set up, so questions can be asked to you. The panel will communicate their findings to the clerk of Governors. Once the clerk has heard from the panel, the clerk will then issue an ‘Appeal decision notice’. This notice will outline the findings of the investigation. You will receive notice of this directly from the clerk of Governors. The decision of the appeal committee in final. Note: there is no time limit for this process to be dealt with. The University will however deal with any matter as quickly as they can.
We cannot assist you further if: • You were excluded from the University because you have submitted false information on your application. There is no right to appeal in this case. • You have failed to pay your tuition fees. The University finance department will negotiate with you on his matter before it results in exclusion.
