National Logistics Policy Will be Out Soon: Minister Mansukh Mandaviya New Delhi Port Wings News Network "Having a logistics policy in the country is essential and when the commerce ministry is concerned then shipping, shipping line and transport can become a part of logistics. It is under purview with the commerce ministry and they have constituted a committee. My ministry is one of the participants in it. I feel it will be out in the next few days," Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State for Shipping (Independent Charge) and Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India, has said.

In an exclusive interview with Swati Khandelwal, Zee Business, Mansukh Mandaviya spoke about Recycling of Ships Bill, and National Logistics Policy.

Excerpts: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completed the first anniversary of his second term in office. So, let us know about the achievements of your department and what are your plans ahead?

The Modi 2.0 government has completed the first year of its term.

On this occasion, I can say that in this one year, the Modi Government has solved issues - on which decisions were not taken for years - that was pending in the country since the independence era. As far as my ministry is concerned then I look after shipping, chemicals, petrochemical, fertilizer and pharma and I can say that steps related to reforms have been taken. In the context of the shipping sector, India leads the world in ship recycling industries. So, we ratified the Hong Kong International Convention via passing the Recycling of Ships

Bill. Its ratification has helped us in attracting the world’s shipping line to our ship recycling industries to get their ships recycled in India.

Recycling of ships in India will give a boost to India’s steel industry and furniture industry. And, many downstream industries can grow beyond through ship recycling.

Sea hirers are a big opportunity in India because India has a coastline of 7,500 km and we have enchased the skills of the traditional sea hirers and channelized it to increase job opportunities of the ship hirer. I am happy to share that 2.40 lakh ship hirers across the world are from India and are working in ship line, cruise line and other areas. The speciality of this job is that you will get your salary in dollars and the minimum salary one can draw here is $2000, which is equivalent to Rs 1 lakh.

We took an initiative and started working to increase the efficiency at the ports. We also brought Port Authorities Bill to bring reforms in the port sector. These are the works that we have done on behalf of the

shipping ministry.

Port and port operations have played an important role amid COVID-19 pandemic crisis. How the situation now as a major part of our trade happens through the sea? Also, talk about the capacity situation at the ports and what is your outlook for the future?

Implementation of Lockdown 1.0 stopped the movement of people. Port is an activity and its closure would have stopped almost everything in the country because 95% cargo is exported and imported from the ports. For instance, suppose oil would have not imported or unloaded at the ports than it would have stopped every vehicle in the country that moves on oil. Besides the movement of food items to the faraway places in the country would have been stopped due to closure of the ports amid the lockdown. That’s why we asked the Home Ministry to add port into essential activity just a day after the lockdown was announced and then directed every port that labours should not leave the ports and work must not be stopped. As labours were not allowed to move out it was required to make arrangement for food, live, and availability of essential items for everyone. These steps were taken at the earliest and it helped us in maintaining our business of loading and unloading, which went down only 20-25% for two months and has revived by now. Thus, the activity has remained open at the ports, which helped in maintaining the export and import of EXIM cargo in the country. Nitin Gadkari Exhorts Steel Players To Eye Bigger Global Share, Tap Opportunities New Delhi Port Wings News Network xhorting domestic steel players to target larger pie in global market with focus on quality products and competitiveness, Union minister Nitin Gadkari on 5 June said the present crisis situation in the wake of COVID-19 should be converted into an opportunity, according to a news report in Financial Express quoting news agency the PTI. He was addressing a webinar on “Indian Steel Industry – Raw Materials”.

“There is huge opportunity for us… It is time for Indian industry to create positivity and selfconfidence and we will win the economic war. We are the fastest growing economy. International situation is supporting us,” the road transport and MSME minister said.

He said by upgrading technology in the sector, India could also attract huge foreign direct investment, thereby creating employment.

He also urged the industry to focus on exports by increasing capacity and reduce dependence on imports.

“We need to strive for economic competitiveness and improve quality,” the minister said.

The senior minister said the government plans to promote modular steel bridges, railway overbridges, etc and urged the

industry to improve quality on par with European nations besides bringing cost down.

He said a proposal was also pending with Cabinet Secretariat for construction of ropeway, cable cars, etc in hilly terrains instead of highways.

Gadkari said that a few states/ UTs like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Kashmir are ready to give electricity for ten years for cable cars and ropeway, etc system and urged the steel players to tap the opportunity.

he “economic aspect should not be higher than health of people,” the Supreme Court said in its observation over the response of the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) affidavit filed earlier on the levy of interest on instalments during the moratorium period. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta in response said he would seek instructions from both the Ministry of Finance and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Senior Advocate Rajiv Dutta, who was appearing for the petitioners, said “The cat is out of the bag'.

Argument of senior advocate Rajiv Dutta that the banks would charge interest and add that to the principal every month and charge interest on interest even when the eyewash of a moratorium on repayment of EMIs against loan was enforced. ``In fact, the borrower would be required to pay much more than what he would have ordinarily paid if there was no moratorium because of this interest on interest concept'', he said.

In an affidavit filed in the apex court against a petition of waving interest on loans to provide relief to borrowers, the Reserve Bank of India informed the Supreme Court that waiving interest on loans for the term loan moratorium will impact the stability of the banking sector.

"Assuming that moratorium is granted to only 65% of the above outstanding, the monthly interest that will be foregone by the banks in case moratorium period has to be declared interest free will be approximately Rs 33,500 crore.” The Rs 2-lakh crore calculation only comprises Indian banks and not other financial institutions.

RBI said, RBI's affidavit before the SC said that banks were intermediaries between depositors and borrowers and apprehended that any move to waive off interest on loans would have direct impact on interest earned by the depositors.

In its reply to the plea seeking interest waiver, the RBI had noted that it was neither prudent nor appropriate. The RBI cautioned that forced waiver of interest may risk the financial viability of banks, which in turn may put the depositors in jeopardy.

In its affidavit, the central bank reasoned that banks must remain sound and profitable for ensuring the safety of depositors and financial stability in the country. The RBI argued, in its reply, that interest of loans is an important source of income for banks and that to remain viable the lenders need to sustain reasonable interest margins.

The RBI had asked the banks not to seek repayment of EMIs against loans for the six-month period from March 1 till August 31. However, the interest accrued on the loan amount during this moratorium period would be required to be paid by the borrowers, Sample it had clarified.

The SC, however, didn’t entirely agree with the banking regulator.

The SC observed that these were not “normal” circumstances and were exceptional. The SC noted that the grant of a moratorium, without the interest waiver, would prove detrimental to many borrowers.

Continued from page -1 closure of the industry, which led to a decline in consumption. These are the things that brought down the cargo business by 25% but it has been fulfilled by now.

We have seen a sharp drop in container volume and have you provided any major relief, like relaxation in port charges, to the exporters to help them?

Indeed there was a slight fall – ranging between 30% and 33% - in export and import of the container cargo. Two things led to this decline and they are (i) Coronavirus that had its impact not only in India but across the world. This led to the closure of industries in many countries or had an impact on the production in others including India. It also had an impact on transportation and labour in India because their absence created a problem in loading and unloading at the places from where the cargo should move although it was done at the port. It occurred across the world and this led to a fall even on the port of India but it is being covered now.

Secondly, you asked about the kind of relaxations that were granted from our end then we through a circular asked the shipping lines to not take detention charge as unavailability of labour was creating a problem in loading and unloading the goods. Interestingly, the shipping lines agreed with it and didn’t slap

any detention charge. Later, we also asked the CIF and ICD to not charge detention charges during Lockdown 1.0 and Lockdown 2.0.

They were private and didn’t charge anything during lockdown 1.0 and then the association granted a 50% relaxation in Lockdown 2.0. It saved crores of rupees of people involved in EXIM cargo business.

We used our land as well as ports land for keeping the cargo that was imported without charging anything for the same. And, we just charged the routine charges at the warehouses, not the detention charges. These mechanisms were used to help the industry to make sure that EXIM business remains unaffected and people including industrialist involved in the business are facilitated.

Can you tell us the time by which the National Logistics Policy will be out and give a boost to the sector?

Having a logistics policy in the country is essential and when the commerce ministry is concerned then shipping, shipping line and transport can become a part of logistics. I have also shown my interest in it. The policy is being drafted by the commerce ministry but my ministry is also engaged in doing several works in that regard.

Everyone together is willing to bring a logistic policy because the logistic cost is 12% and 14% in the

country at present while the world’s logistic cost average stands at 9%, which means we are 5% costlier than the world. For instance, if anyone exports/imports something from India then he then logistic cost on the export or import cargo will be 5% expensive than other countries, which means that we can’t EXIM the cargo where we can earn a profit of 5%. Thus is the world will earn a 10% profit then we will earn a profit of just 5% and if they are earning a profit of 20% then we will get 15%. This is why there is a need to reduce the logistic cost in the country and a good policy is coming for the purpose.

My ministry is contributing to it by boosting up the coastal shipping to reduce the logistic cost. At the same time, we are also boosting the inland waterways and multi-modal transportation. Many such things are being collected together to be a part of logistics policy. It will help in reducing the logistics cost in the country and we are heading in that direction.

Can you provide a timeline by which the policy will be out?

It is under purview with the commerce ministry and they have constituted a committee. My ministry is one of the participants in it that’s why I keep a tab on it. But, I can’t provide any specific timeline but I feel it will be out in the next few days.

Indian Seafarers on Cargo Ships Start Returning on Chartered Flights After Extended Time at Sea Mumbai

Port Wings News Network n a first since the pandemic halted crew change on ships globally, 21 Indian seafarers of Synergy Marine Group returned to India on a chartered flight arranged by the Singapore-based ship management company, according to a BusinessLine report.

This is the first chartered flight that was arranged to carry seafarers working on cargo ships back to India.

The seven chartered flights that took off from India since the crew change crisis began carried seafarers going to join ships in overseas ports, while mostly returning empty.

The plane landed in Kochi in the wee hours of Saturday after a 11hour long flight from Copenhagen with a stop-over in Doha for refuelling.

The 21 crew members had signed off from the oil product tanker ‘Jal Anant’ on May 12 at Gulfhavn port in Denmark after its owner sold the ship. Since then, the crew were staying in a hostel in Korsor near Gulfhavn, waiting for permission from the Indian government to land the chartered flight.

What the seafarers have to say The crew who had spent 8-9 months at sea, comprise seven each from Kerala and Tamil Nadu, two each from Uttar Pradesh and Punjab and one each from Telengana, Bihar and Daman.

For the crew hailing from the North, home is still far away.

“Now, the next struggle beginshow to reach Lucknow, about 2,500 kms from here,” says Captain Manu Tripathi. “Its literally the length of whole of Europe,” he told BusinessLine.

Tripathi will have to undergo a 14-day quarantine in Kerala before taking a flight to Lucknow, his home-town. Or, a seven-day isolation before proceeding to Lucknow in a taxi.

Yet, Tripathi said he and his mates were “happy” to be back in India and credits his employer Synergy Marine and its chief executive officer Captain Rajesh Unni for working as a team to bring them back. “That’s why I have stuck with them for nine years,” he said.

Approval for another chartered flight received The Foreign Ship-owners Representatives and Ship Managers Association (FOSMA) and the Maritime Association of Shipowners, Ship Managers and Agents (MASSA) received approval from the government on Saturday to run an Indigo chartered flight on Sunday from Delhi carrying 170 seafarers to Doha and return with 164 crew who had signed off from ships at various overseas ports and have transited to the capital of Qatar.

“The mission – relief of seafarers – begins,” said Captain Shiv Halbe, Chief Executive Officer, MASSA. The MASSA-FOSMA combine had run an Indigo chartered flight on June 3 from Delhi to Doha which carried 121 seafarers, from where they proceeded to US, UK, Europe, Brazil, South Korea and Japan to relieve crew who were working beyond their original contract tenures.

The crew who were replaced have since travelled to Doha and will take the return flight to Delhi on Sunday. Captain Halbe said that separate permissions would be required to bring back seafarers on

the return leg of chartered flights.

The Shipping Ministry said that there was no problem in sending seafarers out on chartered flights.

“Return is the only problem because these people need to be verified whether they are Indians or not and whether they need to be brought back or not. The government has its priority. Vande Bharat mission flights are operating, the mission will verify them. That’s why it is taking time. We are coordinating with the ministry of external affairs, the embassy and the local governments because they have to agree to land these people. Imagine 200 people coming and Vande Bharat flights also coming, where is the location/ facilities to quarantine them,” an official said.

Qatar has allowed travellers to transit Doha provided they took a flight within 22 hours of arrival.

“Hope, next we will get permission for the 11 June flight from Delhi to Doha and back to bring back seafarers and then everything will be smooth,” the Ministry official said.

More missions More chartered flights from Mumbai/Delhi to Colombo and Doha have been planned by ship and crew managers to facilitate crew change at foreign ports.

“We need a safety corridor for Indian Seafarers,” said Salvatore d’Amico, who looks after the fleet management department at Italian shipping company d’Amico Group.

About 10,000 Indian seafarers have their contract over-due and urgently need to disembark from ships while another 10,000 seafarers are ready to join ships to relieve them, Salvatore tweeted from his handle.

New CII chief Uday Kotak Spells out 10-point Plan To Build India in a Post-pandemic World New Delhi Port Wings News Network he Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has put together a 10-point roadmap on how to revive growth and navigate the challenge of loss of lives and livelihoods created by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a news report in CNBCTV18.

The plan was unveiled by newlyelected CII chief Uday Kotak on the occasion of the industry body completing 125 years.

“We are in uncharted territory and are grappling to find new ways to brave the changes. But we are confident of the resilience of Indian industry and its innovative skills to beat every such challenge,” Kotak said.

Here is the 10-point plan as laid out by the CII chief at a virtual conference.

1. Protecting lives and livelihoods India, like many countries, is facing the challenge of saving lives and livelihoods. As India restarts, Centre, State and local authorities must work together to ramp up testing infrastructure along with robust identification of containment zones and an agile health and safety response to control the spread.

As 80% of the employment is in unorganised sector with no social security, addressing the protection of livelihoods will need measures to increase formalisation of employment through labour and regulatory reforms which would also encourage businesses to move towards formal sector.

The government has announced that labour reforms would be brought in the coming days. Some states have already announced new labour laws in the states. Industry will need to work in partnership to help create more jobs while bringing in more of the workforce under formal sector.

2. Prioritisation of Healthcare and Education The pandemic heightened the need for a robust healthcare system on the same strategic priority as defence. India’s public health spending at 1.3% of GDP calls certainly for higher investment in public health. A long-term strategy of dealing with future pandemics through high quality preventive healthcare, focus on nutrition, sanitation and hygiene needs to be established. India has tremendous shortage of healthcare professionals at all levels. Education plays a key role in achieving the required levels of standards in delivery of healthcare, nutrition and hygiene.

Given the vast expanse of India and penetration of broadband connectivity, the e- healthcare and e-education interventions alongside the traditional methods of delivery, can play a very vital role.

3. Mother nature The increase in the incidence and the intensity of natural calamities, locus attacks, and spread of disease calls for maintaining harmony with nature. COVID has shown us that the climate change is for real and that industrial activity is an important contributor to climate change. India has been at the forefront of climate change

mitigating measures; however, we would need to deepen our work and accord attention to sustainability in all our economic activities. This is one area that CII has been engaged in deeply in many of our activities as we have helped industry adopt sustainable business operations be it in energy usage and conservation, water use and emissions through our Centres of Excellence.

4, Fiscal deficit and financial stability Government spending has been supporting the economy over the last few years. For substantive economic recovery, government spending would be crucial. However, this would mean higher fiscal deficit and rising public debt which would run the risk of rating downgrades and flight of capital besides leaving the currency vulnerable. Financial stability should also be an important factor while deciding the fiscal stance. Finding the fine balance will be of utmost importance at this crucial juncture as various stressed sectors of the economy will look for relief and stimulus packages.

5. Distribution of economic pain The pandemic has caused significant loss to the economic systems including individual & businesses, Governments and the financial sector. While the first loss is taken by individuals and businesses, the government will need bear the heavy burden of losses by stepping in as a key buffer. A battered industry will need support from the government in many forms, including investment friendly policies that will drive demand and measures to help tide over the liquidity crisis.

6. Role of digital and physical The shift to digital during COVID from physical will have a lasting impact in the post COVID times in terms of consumer behaviour. As industry find new business models, the role of Science and Technology becomes important. This tilt in favour of the digital, also has the potential to widen the rural versus urban divide. The rural population is less skilled to participate in an economy with higher digital component and bringing digital skills to rural India is key to enhance rural jobs. The bright side is that connectivity to hinterlands through the telecom and digital services is growing significantly and this can be built upon to work on a more inclusive agenda.

7. Future of jobs and social security The post COVID world is likely to see some transformational changes in the context of jobs in the typical sense.

The CII will work closely with Government to provide incentives and facilitation to companies wanting to shift their manufacturing operations out of China as part of their de-risking strategy. This will help India develop as manufacturing hub for the world. In addition, frontloading of the National Infrastructure pipeline will not only create demand for industries like steel and cement but will also provide jobs.

Government’ focus on enhancing agriculture infrastructure, linking farm produce to markets by APMC reforms will also help increase farm incomes and livelihoods.

8. Rural-urban re-balance For the first time in India, reverse migration was experienced with migrant workers going back.

Industry should be encouraged to set up operations in the rural hinterland. The reforms announced in the minerals and mining sector should be expedited as most mining projects are in rural areas. Similarly, development of agro based clusters could be expedited in rural areas. A vibrant rural industrial sector will also de-risk the impact of COVID on economic activities as spread of COVID is far less in rural areas.

Further, industry and government should make available amenities in terms of housing, education and healthcare for workers who chose to come to the cities to work.

9. Four levers for growth Out of the four engines of growth – consumption, investment, net exports and government spending, the economy has been primarily growing on government expenditure. This is not sustainable as the fiscal situation is under pressure. Hence, it is essential to re-start the other engines of the economy. Given demand uncertainties, private investment remains a challenge. Exports need a quantum jump and to achieve this integration with global and regional value chains is important besides being competitive.

In this scenario, CII will continuously deliberate on how the private sector can play a role in igniting the growth engines of private investments, exports and the forces of entrepreneurship.

10. Getting growth back is nonnegotiable Getting growth back is essential to protect as well as generate jobs and livelihoods. CII will work intensely and closely with all stakeholders to bring back investments. Government spending in public infrastructure and direct benefits cash transfers may help boost demand initially but we need to find ways to sustain demand particularly in such uncertain times when consumers tend to save and get risk-averse. The need of the hour is for the government and industry to work together to return to a sustainable growth path.

In addition to these challenges, Kotak said that India will have new governance Standards driven by a digital world. The industry will have to work with its vendors, especially with MSMEs to ensure that progress is across the value chain. Hence, the industry has a major role to play along with the government in bringing inclusive and sustainable growth back.

"As alluded by the Hon’ble Prime Minister at the CII Annual Session, CII would work as a knowledge partner for the government to build India for a new world after COVID," Kotak said.

Referring to Prime Minister Modi’s clarion call at the CII AGM to accord importance to five “I”s -namely intent, inclusion, investment, infrastructure and innovation -- the new CII president said CII’s work through the course of the year, and beyond, will be guided by 10 lenses enumerated above and will be focused towards finding optimum solutions to the challenges that lie ahead.

The Board of Trustees of Kolkata Port Trust at its meeting held on February 25, 2020 has also passed a resolution to re-name Kolkata Port as Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata considering his multifaceted genius as an eminent jurist, academician, thinker and leader of the masses.

On the occasion of the inaugural ceremony of Sesquicentenary Celebrations of Kolkata Port on January 12, 2020, keeping in view the sentiments of the people of West Bengal, it was announced that Kolkata Port will be re-named after Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, one of the most deserving sons of West Bengal and a front-runner in national integration, dreamer of Bengal's development, inspiration for industrialisation and ardent votary of one law for one nation.

The Kolkata Port is the first Major Port as well as the only riverine port of the country. It came to be governed by a Trust on October 17, 1870, on appointment of the Commissioners for Improvement of the Port of Calcutta as per Act V of 1870. Chidambaranar Port Trust in the year 2011 and the Ennore Port Limited has been re-named as Kamarajar Port Limited in the honour of Shri K Kamarajar, eminent freedom fighter and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Recently, in 2017 Kandla Port was re-named as Deendayal Port. Besides, many airports have also been named after the great national leaders in India.

There was reverse migration also with many labourers in Maharashtra returning to Tamil Nadu and Kerala by special trains.

Tamil Nadu Rural Transformation Project Trichy executive secretary Shri Aaron Joshua Roosevelt said in an effort to encourage rural craft and industries, Rs 300 crore is given as credit support to 1. 4 lakh persons.

Rs one lakh credit support is given as startup loan to persons who have returned to Tamil Nadu after losing jobs in others states due to covid 19 lockdown . The government has targeted 167 youngsters in each district to give start up funds under covid 19 assistance. Under the project, other schemes also are planned for eligible beneficiaries.

There is an additional challenge if the stranded Indians who return home from abroad, decides to stay back and earn their livelihood.

It should be noted that they were working hard abroad for their family and also were giving hard earned foreign exchange for our country. 117 Indians stranded abroad were brought from Kuwait to Tiruchirapalli by Kuwait Airways flight. Another flight with 104 Indians came from Kuwait to Trichy on Saturday. The flight returned to Kuwait with 6335 Kgs of perishable cargo including vegetables. From Tiruchirapalli airport Malindoair took 108 stranded Malaysian passengers to their home country. Under Vande Bharat scheme Air India Express will be transporting passengers from Doha to Tiruchirapalli on June 11, to Madurai on June 17 and to Coimbatore on June 19. On Saturday 910 Indians returned from various cities abroad like Jeddah, Kuwait Nairobi Frankfurt to our cities like Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai Kochi and Gaya.

Along with these Indians who are returning from abroad with some earnings, the labourers who return from other states to Tamil Nadu also badly in need of jobs locally for their livelihood as these labourers don’t have savings. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had urged industries to utilise available local workforce in their firms as other state labourers have left the state. The union government too had announced host of monetary measures under Atmanirbhar Bharat for industries and farmers including Animal husbandry. Universal health emergency is a major challenge to any nation and India being world’s largest democracy had confidently put a big step forward to fight the slowdown caused by the pandemic.

CONCOR Shuts 15 Unviable Inland Terminals; Looks to Merge Regions

Gangavaram Port has planted m Staterun Container Corporation of India Ltd (CONCOR) has shut 15 under-performing inland cargo terminals and returned the land on which they were operating to the Indian Railways, according to a BusinessLIne report.

India’s biggest rail hauler of containers has also started merging regions as it looks to keep itself financially fit on the road to privatisation.

The closure of the terminal at Sabarmati is the only surprise in the list of 15 facilities that have been shuttered. The Sabarmati terminal had a turnover of Rs 51.40 crore in FY19, the highest among the 15 facilities.

The land on which the Sabarmati terminal was operating has been handed back on demand to the Indian Railways in order to use it for the development of the National High-Speed Rail Corridor or the MumbaiAhmedabad bullet train project. The traffic handled at Sabarmati terminal will be shifted to the nearby MMLP at Khodiyar.

Merging regions Simultaneously, CONCOR has merged its Western and Central regions. Some of the terminals under the Central region have gone to the Western region and some to the Eastern region, a government official said.

Likewise, the North Western region will also be merged with the Western region.

“The merger of regions is aimed at rationalisation of operations, better utilisation of human resource and also to cut down costs,” the official said adding that it would also be in preparation of the privatisation of the company.

The 84 terminals currently run by CONCOR is looked after by seven regions.

Terminals returned to Indian Railways The terminals that were returned to the Indian Railways include five from the Western region (Chinchwad in Pune, Miraj, Ratlam, Nagpur and Bhusawal), three from the Northern region (Babarpur in Panipat, Rewari and Ballabhgarh), three from the South Central region (Desur in Belgaum, Raipur and Visakhapatnam CFCV), two from Eastern region (Tata Nagar in Jamshedpur and Rourkela) and one each from North Central region (Madhosingh in Mirzapur) and North Western region (Sabarmati), according to the official.

These 15 terminals, that were built on land leased from the Indian Railways at concessional rates, had a combined turn over of Rs 277.50 crores in FY19.

Apart from the above, CONCOR has also handed over the empty container parks at its Tughlakabad terminal – New Mineral Siding Okhla, Power Cabin and the New Power Cabin near Tughlakabad Railway Station – to the Indian Railways.

Of the 15 terminals, Rourkela, Tata Nagar, Chinchwad, Miraj, Bhusawal and Madhosingh have become unviable for operations.

The traffic hitherto handled at Rewari will be cleared from the Khatuwas rail head. The existing traffic at Babarpur will be diverted to CONCOR’s newly built multi-modal logistics park (MMLP) at Barhi in Haryana.

Similarly, the existing traffic of Visakhapatnam terminal will be shifted to the MMLP at Visakhapatnam and the existing cargo at Raipur will be shifted to the MMLP

at Naya Raipur.

The cargo at Ratlam will be handled at the newly built MMLP at TIHI Indore while the traffic at Nagpur will be shifted to the newly constructed MMLP at MIHAN in Nagpur.

The Ballabhgarh business has been shifted to Tughlakabad (near Delhi), the flagship facility of CONCOR. The land on which the Desur facility was built has been handed over following a demand from Indian Railways.

The government has decided to privatise CONCOR by selling 30.8 per cent of its 54.8 per cent stake in the company to a private company along with transfer of management control.

CONCOR’s plans By returning the land at 15 locations, CONCOR seeks to reduce its financial burden as the government is finalising a plan directing the state-run firm to buy land owned by Indian Railways on which it has built close to half of its 84 terminals.

According to a rough calculation, the land purchase will cost CONCOR more than Rs 8,000 crore which will be funded mainly through debt.

Resolving the land issue is key to the planned privatisation of the Navratna PSU to avoid allegations of transferring Indian Railways land to a private entity at low rates.

CONCOR, according to the plan, will buy the Indian Railways land on which it runs the remaining facilities at 6 per cent of the circle rate - the rate at which the government recognises land value for a particular site, the official said.The land transaction will be in the form of a 99-year lease.

The emergence of the recent global pandemic – COVID-19 has underscored the fact that, when we destroy biodiversity, we destroy the system that supports human life.

JNPT Converts Multi Skill Training Centre Into COVID Care Centre to Serve Local Community

Port Wings News Network eeping in view of the spread of novel Coronavirus in India, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has taken various preventive measures to join the fight against COVID-19. Earlier this week, JNPort has converted its Multi Skill Training Centre at Bokadvira into a COVID CARE Hospital with 120 beds and ambulance service and handed it over to the state authorities temporarily for the protection of the local community.

JNPT has been carrying out extensive community disinfectant spraying and sanitation drive in all its nearby villages and has also handed over infra-red temperature guns to the Sarpanchs of these villages as preventive measure.

Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman, JNPT said, “JNPT is very conscious of its role and responsibility towards the extended JNPT family and is committed towards them. By handing over of our training centre as Covid Care Centre to the state authorities, we are trying to increase the preparedness of the local community in fighting this pandemic. I am sure, together we will win this fight against COVID-19”.

JNPT has been operational all through the lockdown period as part of essential services.

On May 31, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust loaded the highest quantity 86477.969 MT of ‘Crude Oil’, produced by ONGC of Coastal movement in the vessel MV DESH BHAKT. JNPT regularly handles various petroleum products including LPG, High speed Diesel, Motor Spirit, Naphtha, Crude oil through BPCL Liquid cargo jetty. JNPT Bulk Terminal

has handled total 6,50,942 MT of liquid cargo in the month of May 2020 as compared to 5,74,664 MT handled in May 2019 which is 13.3 percent higher.

JNPT registered a throughput of 274,750 TEUs in container handling. JNPT Handled 445 container trains during the month May2020, as against the 420 rakes handled in same month last year i.e. May-2019, increasing the rail co-efficient from 14.91 in May-2019 to 23.70% in May-2020.

JNP Container Terminal (JNPCT) have

started a new initiative of sending rakes loaded with empty containers to ICD Dahej from 6th May 2020 for bringing export cargo of Reliance Industries from Hazira in return trip.

The port authorities has been diligently deploying all the sanitary guidelines issued for the safety of its workforce with regular fogging and spraying of all buses. JNPT has also provided accommodation to the staff of the terminals, drivers in the township along with providing meal packets and health check-ups to all truck drivers who are working tirelessly to keep the operations going.

Indian Navy Ship Jalashwa Arrives at V.O.Chidambaranar Port With 700 Stranded Indian Nationals From Maldives Tuticorin Port Wings News Network s part of the ongoing 'Samudra Setu' mission by the Government of India to evacuate Indians stranded in different parts of the world by sea, on 07 June 2020, Indian Navy Ship ‘Jalashwa’ repatriated 700 Indian nationals from Maldives.

INS ‘Jalashwa’ had departed from ‘Port of Male’, Maldives at around 2130 hrs., on 05 June 2020 and arrived at outer anchorage of VOC Port at 0900 hrs and was subsequently docked at Berth No.14 at 0930 Hrs. Among the 700 number of Indian nationals disembarked at the VOC Port, 655 are male and 45 are female.

On arrival, the evacuees from Maldives were screened by the Port Health Officials and their luggages were sanitized. On issue of PPE kits by the Port to all passengers, the passengers were boarded into 25 waiting buses and transited to Passenger terminal. On reaching the passenger terminal, self-declaration forms were obtained from the passengers and were asked to download and configure ‘Aarogya Setu’ app in their smartphones, using the free Wi-fi provided by the Port Authority. Thereafter, immigration and Customs formalities were completed and the passengers were guided to the respective buses for their onward destinations.

WTO Webinar Explores Way Forward For Sustainable Trade After COVID-19

Port Wings News Network rade and the WTO have an important role to play in steering global recovery towards a sustainable course for the well-being of the world’s population and the planet in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, speakers said at a 4 June webinar organized to mark World Environment Day. The aftermath of the pandemic provides a window of opportunity to reinvigorate work so that trade policies help generate greener and more resilient economies, they said.

Trade and environment “Protecting the planet is not a luxury. It's a necessity. The COVID-19 pandemic has rightly drawn our attention to the health crisis, along with its immense social and economic effects,” WTO Director-General Roberto Azevêdo said in a video message to the online event convened by the chair of the WTO Committee on Trade and Environment (CTE), Ambassador Chad Blackman of Barbados, with the support of the WTO Secretariat.

“Rising environmental stresses leave our societies vulnerable to natural disasters, resource scarcity and disease. And we know that it is the poorest who suffer the most. In fact, a collective response on trade that fosters sustainability, inclusiveness and resilience is what this crisis calls for,” said DG Azevêdo.

“The good news is we are not starting from scratch,” Ambassador Blackman said.

Before the pandemic, he said, the CTE already served as a global forum dedicated to promoting global cooperation on sustainable trade by discussing WTO members' policies to establish circular economies, address plastic pollution, and eliminate trade barriers on environmental goods and services.

Ambassador Blackman encouraged WTO members to intensify policy dialogue, invigorate efforts to make trade policies supportive of sustainability and explore creative ways to make trade more resilient to growing environmental risks.

With the world fighting a pandemic together and the country in extended lockdown, this year plantation programme was conducted

by PPT in a simple manner, following social distancing norms. PPT intends to plant around

1 lakh trees in this fiscal in the locality.

As the part of a mass plantation drive, Shri Rinkesh Roy, Chairman, PPT planted a sapling at the Golf Course of PPT. It was followed by plantation in the premises of Paradip Sakshyarata Samiti. The plantation drive under the aegis of PPT, will be executed through Odisha Forest Development Corporation.

As part of this plantation drive, the casuarina forests that have been depleted near the beach area are being planned for rejuvenation along with tree cover on the Fishery Harbour & Mahanadi Mouth area. The township will be planted with fruit bearing trees. All this will help to restore the tree cover that has been destroyed by cyclones in the last 10 to 15 years.

PERSISTING CHALLENGES IN TRADE AND THE ENVIRONMENT Other speakers stressed how the COVID-19 crisis has served to magnify persisting challenges in trade and the environment and how global cooperation can be intensified in its aftermath.

Ambassador Andrew Staines of the United Kingdom noted how WTO members have yet to conclude an agreement to liberalize trade in environmental goods and services that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution and improve energy efficiency. The need to rebuild in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis and to address the climate crisis presents a new opportunity for members to try again on that front, he said. Trade is a key driver of technology dissemination and can support the innovation needed to drive the green transition.

TRADE DISRUPTIONS DURING THE PANDEMIC Diane Holdorf, Managing Director for Food and Nature at the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, reflecting on trade disruptions during the pandemic, said the private sector can play a significant role in pursuing sustainable trade and ensuring global supply chains are made more resilient. The WTO can help economies to evolve to be more inclusive and environmentally conscious.

UN Environment Programme's chief of the market and resources branch, Steven Stone, highlighted the importance of upholding multilateral rules for global and national prosperity, forging partnerships across the

trade and environment communities, and taking advantage of the current tipping point to deliver long-awaited outcomes on fisheries subsidies, fossil fuel subsidy reform, carbon markets, and illegal and unregulated wildlife trade, among other things.

Daphne Ewing-Chow, a Forbes senior contributor, looked at the impact of the crisis on trade from the perspective of Caribbean and small island developing states which have to grapple with climate disruptions. She stressed the importance of trade in building resilience, creating jobs and supporting economic diversification as a means for economic recovery after COVID-19.

Céline Charveriat, Executive Director of the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP), drew attention to the risk that economic recovery strategies after COVID-19 may protect inefficient and environmentally harmful industries through beggar thy neighbour policies. She called for recovery strategies that aim not only to allow countries to bounce back but to bounce forward towards a more sustainable future.

Carolyn Deere Birkbeck, senior researcher at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, supported Ms Charveriat in suggesting that the WTO step up existing work on its environmental agenda but also consider the sustainability dimension in all negotiations outside the environmental portfolio. They highlighted the importance of helping developing countries to manage the green transition and build capacity through Aid for Trade.

The WTO Secretariat stands ready to support members in their efforts to pursue more sustainable trade, Aik Lim Hoe, Director of the WTO's Trade and Environment Division, said in closing the webinar.

Green Sticker Made Mandatory for New BS-VI Vehicles From October 1 New Delhi Port Wings News Network nion Minister Nitin Gadkari-led Highways and Transport ministry has mandated the display of a one centimetre Green sticker, for the identification of (BS-VI) Bharat Stage-VI compliant motor vehicles from October onwards later this year.

According to various media reports, this will display registration details of the vehicle and will have to placed on top of the third tamper-proof, high security registration plates.

This High Security Registration Plates or third number plate will be placed on the inside of the windshield of each newly manufactured vehicle by the manufacturers.

The green label, which is meant to denote the environment friendly credentials of BSVI complying vehicles to easily distinguish them from their more polluting vehicular counterparts on road, comes as the latest amendment to the Motor Vehicles (HighSecurity Registration Plates) order, 2018.

"Vehicles complying with BS-VI emission norms shall have 1 cm green strip at the top in the third registration plate," read a notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

A Road Transport and Highways Ministry official told news agency PTI that requests were made to have distinct identification for BS-VI complying vehicles as is being made in other countries following similar vehicular pollution control norms.

"Accordingly, a feature in form of a unique strip of green colour of 1 cm wide on top of the existing third registration sticker for BSVI vehicles of any fuel type that is, for petrol or CNG, which have a light blue colour sticker and a diesel vehicle which is of orange colour sticker will have a green strip of 1 CM on top has been mandated," the official from the ministry was quoted as saying.

Earlier, the ministry had stated last year in April that all motor vehicles will be fitted with tamper-proof, High Security Registration Plates (HSRP).

Russian Railways Completes Čortanovci Tunnel Excavation in Serbia Chennai

Port Wings News Network ZD International (a subsidiary of Russian Railways) has finished the Cortanovci tunnel excavation works on the Stara Pazova-Novi Sad section of the Belgrade-Budapest railway line. The facility is now 91% competed.

The Cortanovci tunnel consists of two parallel single-track tunnels with a total length of 2.2 km. Today, the crews have completed tunneling in the left bore from the northern and southern entrances.

The right bore was dug through in early April. Also, more than 1.3 linear kilometers of permanent lining of the tunnel have been completed, anti-landslide protective structures have been equipped, and one of two transverse service walkways has been excavated. In total, during construction, it will be necessary to excavate more than 300,000 m3 of soil and lay more than 170,000 m3 of concrete using almost 12,000 t of reinforcement and steel metal structures.

This progress was highly lauded

by Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia and Minister

of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlović, who visited the construction site today.

RZD International is

implementing a large-scale project for the reconstruction of Serbian railways on a particularly important section of the Belgrade-Budapest line. It is here that two unique structures are being constructed.

The tunnel and the viaduct in Čortanovci constitute a unified complex of railway structures that will ensure the speed of trains up to 200 km/h.

The company is also reconstructing and building on the Stara Pazova-Novi Sad high-speed

double-track railway line. As part of the project, the track's upper structure is being built and 28 artificial structures are under construction: galleries, viaducts, pedestrian overpasses, bridges, including the new Beshka station and the Karlovački Vinogradi roadside station; the Injia, Sremski Karlovci, and Petrovoradin stations are also being reconstructed.

In addition, activities are underway as part of a agreement signed in January 2019 between RZD International and JSC Serbian Railways Infrastructure that includes the comprehensive modernization and reconstruction of signaling, centralization, and blocking systems, as well as communications and telecommunications with the creation of a single dispatch center for controlling train traffic in Serbia.

It will allow the country's railways to reach a fundamentally higher technological level of management, digital planning and forecasting of freight and passenger traffic. These works will be completed in several stages between 2023 and 2025.

Railways Need to Bring Innovation in Operations to Fund Infrastructural Inadequacies: AIAI Mumbai

Mr. Vijay Kalantri said: " No doubt decentralization instead of centralization can favor to wash out the scams in procurement and operations. At the same time technological innovations in the same will bring about higher efficiency in making smooth flow of operations. Though, most of the government departments are now technologically driven, however technology back end services still fail to play effectively in wide range of operations of Indian Railway. Innovation means funding and funding is what the Railways are struggling to procure."

"It is true that in comparison to roads door to door connectivity in case of railways is just 50% .

And door to door connectivity delivery service segment of roads is what inches up against railways since it has an edge in the same.

However, the railways need not lose their spirit as an enthusiastic and strategic vision can still make it possible to achieve not only profits but at the same time help it to become self-reliant without budgetary allocations," he added.

Further Mr. Kalantri said, the Indian Railway caters heavily to the lowest segments of the society and need to be resilient to their paying capacity.

for the luxury segment however the same was contradicted in terms of time of travel. In such a situation, the Indian Railways need to adopt business models prevailing in many other countries where railways are serving logistics interests of large manufacturing hubs in form of private railway," he added.

Suggestions for Improvement: Mr. Kalantri also suggested few measures (listed below) to improve the profitability.

1. Private railway networks can be laid from warehouses to ports or industrial hubs to warehouses depending on preference. And can be operated privately offering annual subscription to the railway departments.

2. Skilled and diligent manpower will operate such a network which will avoid reckless driving of trucks and frequent accidents on the highways with more space for the normal traffic on the already congested roads and highways.

3. Such private railway network can be worked out on PPP basis

with the Railway Ministry liable for land procurement while the entire work of construction and operation to be outsourced to private players.

This will dampen the ongoing corruption in case of e-tenders floated for procurement in new projects due to technological inadequacies. With the private player totally liable for the operations of such private networks.

4. Boost ancillary supplier industry at free will without suppression of Government tenders thus boost employment by way of private railway network sector.

5. Although, RVNL is there in place. However, it needs to be proper allocation of funds and support and they need to be more proactive and forthcoming with PPP projects.

6. Delhi freight corridor project needs to be expedited to complete and fortify value chains in the logistics sector. Industrial hubs / SEZs can be built on the either side which will boost rural employment and there will be less migration to the cities. As jobs will be available in the rural background itself as this alone was the original idea behind the DMIC project backed

by Japanese investment.

Price competitiveness, quality technology and Efficient design of business plan is what will make Indian Railway a profit center than a cost center.

This will also decrease the dependence on road infrastructure to a large extent.

We hope our suggestions are taken in good spirit of development of the economy in order to boost its growth, added Mr. Kalantri.

NEWS - BITS Rosmorrechflot Announces New Competition for Construction of Bagayevsky hydrosystem Yet another competition announced for construction of the Bagayevsky hydrosystem on the Don river, Federal Marine and River Transport Agency (Rosmorrechflot) said on its official Instagram page.

Information about the competition with limited participation in electronic format for “Construction of the Bagayevsky hydrosystem on the Don river.

Facilities of Phase 2 (the main period)” will be published on the official website of the Unified State Procurement Information System on June 5. The initial (maximum) price of the contract has remained unchanged at RUB 21.014 billion.

The bids are to be submitted by 2 July 2020.

The construction works are foreseen by the Federal Project “Inland Water Ways” under the comprehensive plan for upgrading and expanding core infrastructure till 2024.

The previous three competitions were cancelled because of changes introduced into the federal targeted investment programme in respect of contract terms and value. The contract price set for the recent one was RUB 21,014,444,600 with the first two set at RUB 19.4 and 19.5 billion accordingly.

IAA PortNews earlier cited Aleksandr Poshivai, head of Federal Marine and River Transport Agency (Rosmorrechflot) as emphasizing at the meeting of Rosmorrechflot’s Board and Public Council that reconstruction of the Beloomut hydrosystem will let increase throughput capacity of Russia’s inland water ways by 910,000 tonnes per year.

According to him, the year of 2020 is also to see the beginning of Bagayevsky hydrosystem’s main phase construction and continuation of comprehensive reconstruction in the Volga, Severdvinsk, Volga-Baltic, Volga-Don, Azov-Don and Yenisey Basins.

Zvezda Shipyard stars cutting steel for yet another Aframax tanker

Rosneft says Shipbuilding Complex Zvezda (Zvezda Shipyard) has started steel cutting for the sixth Aframax tanker intended for Sovcomflot. According to the statement, the steel plates are cut by highly accurate plasma gas cutting machine.

Zvezda Shipyard is to build a total of 12 Aframax ships with the first four units already under construction. The lead ship has been launched and is being prepared for mooring trials.

In September 2018, in the framework of the Eastern Economic Forum, Rosneft Oil Company, Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex, Arctic Leasing LLC (a VEB Group Company) and SKF ECO LLC (a Sovkomflot Group Company) signed a number of agreements for construction of two new generation Aframax crude oil tankers with their subsequent long-term chartering. The tankers are to be provided to the customer in 2022.

These Aframax tankers with deadweight of 114,000 tonnes, length of 250 meters and width of 44 meters will be the first ships of this class built in Russia. The tankers are equipped with the most advanced class A automation system. The tankers’ main and additional power supply units can operate on both traditional and green fuel, the liquefied natural gas, which meets new world environmental standards. The tanker is designed to transport crude oil in unrestricted area of navigation.

Keppel enters into framework deed with Borr Drilling to defer scheduled delivery of rigs

Keppel Offshore & Marine Limited (Keppel O&M) has through its whollyowned subsidiaries, Keppel FELS Limited and Offshore Partners Pte. Ltd., entered into a Framework Deed with Borr Drilling Limited (Borr Drilling) and certain of its subsidiaries pursuant to which Keppel O&M agreed to, among other things, defer the scheduled delivery of five jackup rigs to Borr Drilling to 2022, to be delivered progressively, the company said in its release.

These five jackup rigs are part of the 11 jackup rigs ordered by Borr Drillling, six of which have been delivered to date. This follows the announcement by Borr Drilling on 20 May 20201 that it had, in response to the weakening market, entered into discussions with its lenders and shipyards to, among other things, postpone yard commitments, adjust covenants and reduce amortisation as well as defer cash interest payment to strengthen its liquidity situation.

Based on the original delivery schedule, three out of the five rigs were scheduled for delivery by 3Q2020 and the remaining two rigs by 1Q2022. Pursuant to the terms of the Framework Deed, the delivery of one rig will be deferred to 2Q2022 while the remaining four rigs are to be delivered by 3Q2022. Borr Drilling is to pay holding costs and/or cost cover in respect of all the deferred deliveries. Of the six delivered rigs, three have been paid in full.

May Air Cargo Volumes Improve Month-on-Month, But Dip in Final Two Weeks: CLIVE Data Services Chennai

Port Wings News Network lobal industry data for May supports the continued small recovery of air cargo volumes but a fall in demand over the last two weeks of the month may signal more challenging times ahead as airlines return capacity to the market.

Having only recently stated that the global air cargo industry had stabilised, but was by no means in good shape, the latest week-by-week analyses by CLIVE Data Services for May unfortunately pinpoints a slightly deteriorating condition as the month progressed.

The month of May 2020 was not as bad for the global air cargo industry as April 2020. As hinted in CLIVE’s data last month, the industry has passed the (initial) bottom. After a -37% decline in volumes year-on-year in April, the corresponding figure for May of -31% shows a slight upward curve and, measured alongside a capacity decline of -42% versus last year, the pressure on capacity remained high.

Consequently, CLIVE’s ‘dynamic loadfactor’, based on both the volume and weight perspectives of cargo flown and capacity available, increased month-on-month from 67% to 69%.

But, just as March and April were a story of two tales, so is May. March

ended far worse than it started, while for April it was the other way around. Looking at the most recent weeks, it is clear that May

ended weaker than it started. After a series of week-over-week growth in volumes, a decline set in during the week of May 18-24, followed by an even stronger decline for the last week of May. During these last two weeks, the capacity growth rate versus the previous week was higher than the volume growth, thereby reducing the dynamic loadfactor for the first time in weeks by 0.5%. This easing of pressure on capacity had a downward impact on freight rates on major tradelanes, as recently reported by the TAC Index.

“Looking at the last 12 weeks, it is clear to see that market volumes remain erratic and that this will continue for the foreseeable future.

This is one of the few certainties we

have at the moment. We can see some dark clouds gathering and this is a cause of concern for air cargo. This is why, in navigating these uncertain times, weekly data becomes not only relevant to decisionmaking, but crucial.

Knowing what is happening each week gives the industry the clearest direction. We do not see signals yet that the increase in capacity is being met by growth in demand. With the announcements of increases in passenger schedules, global air cargo revenues may suffer ‘collateral damage’ of more capacity returning to the market,” said CLIVE’s Managing Director, Niall van de Wouw.

Virgin Atlantic Increases Cargo-Only Flights by Over 33% In June Chennai

Port Wings News Network irgin Atlantic will increase its cargo-only flights by 35% to nearly 600 in June with the launch of new routes including Beijing and Brussels following the success of its May programme.

June will see a total of 601 flights – 597 cargo-only services and 4 repatriation flights for the UK’s Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO). As the airline continues to extend its network to support demand for export and import cargoes as UK and international businesses continue their recovery from the COVID-19 outbreak, this month’s schedule highlights for customers include: The launch of daily flights connecting London Heathrow and Beijing; Virgin Atlantic’s first-ever flights to Brussels, arriving from New York JFK before connecting directly to London twice-a-week; Three flights a week to Chicago, starting on 4 June; Increased Mumbai services to three a week, with UK departures every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from June 6; Three-times weekly LondonAtlanta flights from June 9; A return to Nigeria with weekly Lagos flights to and from London; and Increase to daily flights to and from Hong Kong.

The airline’s growing schedule means cargo customers now have access to direct cargo capacity connecting London, New York JFK, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Johannesburg, Tel Aviv,

Lagos, Mumbai, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Beijing and Brussels. Kales Airline Services, Virgin general sales agency in Brussels will market its increased direct capacity in Belgium.

Shai Weiss, CEO of Virgin Atlantic, said: “I want to personally thank all of our cargo customers

who have supported our cargo-only flying. We’re proud to be increasing the number of frequencies and routes we can offer in June as international trade steps us its recovery and lockdowns are eased around the world. While the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic continues to restrict passenger flying, our cargo operation has never been more important both to our business and in keeping vital global supply chains running.”

In May, Virgin Atlantic operated 446 cargo-only flights, including 66 charters for customers, averaging 52 weekly departures from the UK. The airline carried 4.4 million kilos of cargo into the UK and 5.3 million kilos of exports, producing the highest monthly cargo revenues in the airline’s 36-year history.

The airline also looks forward to continuing to partner with the Department for Health and the NHS, working with them on 17 cargo charters per week from Shanghai and Beijing throughout June and July, bringing in the supplies that the teams here in the UK urgently need to care for patients. To date the airline has carried over 44 million items of PPE from China to the UK, including over 33 million isolation and medical masks, as well as millions of disposable aprons and gloves, and protective coveralls.

Other PPE shipments to date include eye protection covers, ventilators, isolation gowns, injection and infusion pumps, and disposable samplers and swabs.

DNV GL, ABB launch New MOU to Advance Marine Digitalization With Remote Signing Ceremony Chennai

Port Wings News Network NV GL, the world’s leading classification society, and technology leader ABB have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to accelerate digitalization in the maritime industry. The agreement was signed remotely by DNV GL – Maritime CEO Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen and ABB Marine & Ports Managing Director Juha Koskela in an online ceremony.

The MOU will see ABB and DNV GL work together on a “Digitalization Roadmap”, to examine how the maritime industry can benefit from the greater availability of data, interconnectivity of systems, data analysis, and new technologies such as AI (artificial intelligence) and machine learning.

Even though DNV GL and ABB together have over two centuries of experience in the maritime sector, they have both been among the quickest to look to the power of new digital technologies to help shipowners and operators around the world optimize vessel performance, enhance quality, and deliver more secure and sustainable operations.
