Chennai Port Clocks Rs 32 Crore Net Profit During Financial Year 2017-18 Chennai
C
Port Wings News Network hennai port has reported a net profit of Rs. 32 crore during the financial year 2017-18 against Rs 13 crore in the previous fiscal. Operating surplus was Rs 225 crore against Rs 217 crore in the previous year, a 3.82 per cent increase. Announcing the overall performance of the port during the annual press meet on 7 April 2018, Shri P Raveendran, Chairman, Chennai Port Trust, said that the better financial performance was possible due to higher cargo volume of 51.88 million tonnes (mt) handled during the financial year ended March 31, 2018, against 50.21 mt in the previous year. It may be noted that the port had surpassed the 48.88 mt target fixed by the Shipping Ministry for 2017-18. It had handled higher cargo volume despite sluggish growth in global trade. MATTER OF PRIDE FOR CHENNAI PORT It is a matter of pride for Chennai Port that despite sluggish growth in global trade, the cargo volume handled at Chennai Port during the FY 2017-18 was 51.88 Million MTs (MMTs) as against 50.21 MMTs handled during the FY 2016-17. The net surplus is expected to be about Rs.32 Crores compared to Rs.13 Crores last year. This volume is 3 Million MTs or 6% more than the target of 48.88 Million MTs (MMTs) fixed by the Ministry. Of this 51.88 Million MTs (MMTs), container traffic accounted for 30 Million MTs (MMTs) and petroleum products accounted for 13.5 Million MTs (MMTs). PORT HANDLED 15,49,457 TEUS IN FY 2017-18 Chennai Port handled 15,49,457 TEUs in FY 2017-18 as against 14,94,831 TEUs handled in FY 2016-17, thus registered an increase of 3.65% YoY. Chennai Port has also registered significant records in handling of cargoes like Gypsum, Raw Sugar, POL Products, Barytes, etc during the FY 2017-18.
E f f i c i e n c y performance parameters like Pre-Berthing Detention, Turn Round Time and Ship Berth-day Output have improved compared to FY 2016-17. The Operating surplus for the FY 201718 is Rs.225.49 crores (provisional) as against Rs.217.20 crores during FY 2016-17 registering an increase of 3.82%, which was achieved by exercising tight control on operational expenditure. TWO MODERN GODOWNS After Capital dredging at Dr. Ambedkar Dock & Jawahar Dock Basins, the alongside depth at the CTB 4 (Dr.Ambedkar Dock) is now -15 M, the port is geared up to handle 8000 TEUs capacity vessels at both terminals in Chennai Port. Chennai Port has made operational a New multi-lane Gate Complex at Gate No.1 facilitating faster entry and exit of container and other cargo trucks. Two modern Godowns with a total area of 9000 sq.m have been constructed for catering to the requirements of the EXIM Trade for clean cargoes. COASTAL BERTH AT THE NORTHERN SHELTERING ARM Construction of the Coastal berth at the Northern Sheltering Arm will be completed by June 2018 and will add cargo volumes with benefits to the Users as part of the New Coastal Shipping Policy of the Government. The JD strengthening works are also in progress and along with the construction of high quality concrete pavement yards at ONB and JD (E) areas. In order to tap the potential for Bunker fuels along the East Coast, it is proposed to construct a 181 M long Bunker Berth at BD at
an estimate cost of Rs.44 Crores and the LOA for the project has been issued already. UPGRADATION OF CRUISE TERMINAL The existing Cruise terminal has been updgraded and modernized to International Standards through a grant from the Ministry of Tourism as part of the Cruise Shipping Policy and is ready to receive the Cruise Vessels with all facilities required for cruise passengers. The first Cruise vessel in this terminal ‘Viking Sun’ with 845 tourists was handled on 01.04.2018 en route to Cochin. IMPROVEMENT OF ROAD NETWORK INSIDE THE PORT The Road Network inside the Port is being augmented through widening of existing roads to ease congestion and provide smooth flow of traffic inside the Port area. Further, with focus on evacuation of containers, a dedicated corridor is proposed inside the Port under the Sagarmala Programme. The work on development of a common railway yard has been completed and can receive full length rakes. Further, Chennai Port and CONCOR has started a new initiative of transporting DPD/DPE Containers from Concor Annexe at Tondiarpet from 23.03.2018. Chennai Port is also poised to provide Multi Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) at Jolarpet. In this regard, a consultant for preparation of DPR has been appointed for the Jolarpet MMLP by the Ministry. The Mappedu land is being considered for serving as a Maritime cluster near Chennai as it has potential for steel, petrochemicals, electronics and ship building industry. This facility is expected to attract business for the maritime industry by improving the economics for the cluster participants and also generate employment.
