One of the perks of working in the fashion industry is the fact that we are constantly surrounded by loads of beautifulness, whether they be a rack of freshly steamed silk dresses, a buttery leather bag or ridiculously gorgeous models. Unfortunately, such 4803"92/%4$(.$9)"5#%"3%5.)$#%2995:42#"$&%*0%"#)$(#2/%;213<%18"98% in the case of models would generally mean uncooperative at‐ titudes (“I don’t look good in this”, “I’m tired” and “Can I go home now?”). In this sense, we have been incredibly blessed with the best models in the world. Not only are they insanely beautiful as you can see throughout the issue, but they also possess wonderful personalities that shine to their fullest even in the most gruesome conditions. Jenny, our cover girl, never even breathed a word of complaint while freezing to death at a windy beach. Our life‐size Barbie girl Karly had such a powerful presence on Rodeo Drive that tourists were actually taking pictures of her thinking she was a celebrity, but her personality was so down‐to‐ earth that even being her “entourage” was fun. Julia (our song girl we scouted at Ralph’s – yes, we pick up girls at grocery stores now) and Mia practically risked their lives while shooting under an +#6#"38$&%95#3)(+9)"5#%3)(+9)+($<%*+)%:2#2,$&%)5%453$%.5(%35:$% of the best and most artistic pictures we have ever shot. As a start‐up student publication, we don’t have the re‐ sources to pamper our models as much as we should (believe me, if we could, our models would be enjoying a full body massage and chocolate‐covered strawberries). So as a way of attempting to express in words how much we appreciate them, we would like to dedicate this issue to our wonderful models. FORMATIVE is a line created by Ali Chen, Elaine Kwong and Anita Wong to explore the art of human body and movement that both mediums are derived from and to blend together their contradicting characteristics. Their collection is full of irony: free and controlled, basic and original, uninhibited and restricted. 1. How did you guys decide to start this line to‐ gether? The way that Formative started was just like every else: through a simple spark of an idea. We saw an opportunity to take our designs into something #$1%2#&%&"'$($#)7 2. What are some of your inspirations?

Some of the things that inspire us to produce our lines are the things we see in our everyday lives. Because creativity is one of those things that come to you when you least expect , we are constantly on the move looking for the very thing that will move +3%)512(&3%5+(%#$H)%/"#$7%I5(%"#3)2#9$%"#%5+(%6(3)% collection, we went with the things that we knew and inspired us best‐ archi‐

tecture‐ and took the relationship between to two 2#&%:$(,$&%")%"#%5(&$(%)5%.5(:%5+(%6(3)%95//$9)"5#7% Then in our most recent collection, we took the line in the opposite direction and experimented with the silhouette of the human body. We also post all our inspirations on our blog formative.tumblr.com so our fans can constantly see our process. 3. Tell us more about your design process. Do you individually come up with designs, or brainstorm all together? I5(:2)">$%"3%2%95//$9)">$%&$3",#%$'5()%.(5:%2//%)8($$% designers and because we all practice architecture, the way we process is very similar. But at the same time we are each our own individuals and we are always keeping each other in check check with our designs. 4. Tell us about each of your individual tastes. How !"#$%&#'$()*)+!"$,"$-).#"#/%0$1,$%&#'$#2#"$3#%$)/$%&#$ way of creating a coherent collection? Between Ali, Elaine, and I, anyone can clearly see the &"'$($#9$%"#%5+(%)23)$3%J+3)%*0%12)98"#,%+3%12/= down the street but we do enjoy a lot of the same )8"#,37%K+(%95#;"9)3%2($%:5($%5.%2%*/$33"#,%)82#%2 curse because we always keep each other in check, always critiquing and improving our designs. 5. What were some of the biggest drawbacks or bar‐ riers you faced since you started Formative? One of the biggest drawbacks Formative has faced is the very thing that makes us strong. Architecture, 2/)85+,8%&$6#$3%+3%2/35%&(213%+3%*29=%4+($/0%*0%")3%4(29‐ tice. In architecture, our common mediums are building materials while in fashion the common medium is fabric. So doing Formative really took us out of our comfort zone and challenged us to communicate in a dif‐ ferent way.

7. Where do you see yourself ten years later? When we started Formative, we began with purely an idea and never imagined in our wildest dreams that in only two seasons it would take us this far. That being said we can’t 320%18$($%1$%1"//%*$%"#%6>$%5(%)$#%0$2(3%*+)%1$%&5%854$% that whatever point we reach we will keep our design intentions pure.
