Council hears proposal for all-inclusive playground

Sewer tap-in committee looks to ‘simplify’ process By Lois Mittino Gray Members of the Mount Vernon Common Council took action to solve the sewer tap-in fee uproar, brought up by east side business owners at the last few meetings, and listened to the dream of a young high school girl at its January 18, meeting. Both will result in positive changes for the Mount Vernon community. Sydney Deno, a freshman at Mount Vernon High School, introduced herself and her dream of getting an all-inclusive playground in Mount Vernon. “My family and I decided to jump in with both feet and met with the County Special Needs Director on this. There seemed to be much interest so we formed a committee and got in touch with Unlimited Play to help us get started,” she explained. Deno added they are not asking for money,

By Lois Mittino Gray The former New Harmony School building will not rise like a Phoenix to become a vibrant new community learning center as proposed by the Friends of the Working Men’s Institute after all. In a surprise announcement at the January 16, meeting of the New Harmony Town Council, President Alvin Blaylock reported that he received a letter from WMI Committee Chairman Nathan Maudlin stating they will not continue with the project. “The Trustees voted last night (January 11) to abandon the William Maclure Conservatory of Useful Knowledge. The decision, while difficult, is correct. We were not able to raise funds sufficient to remediate the mold, repair the AC, and fund the program in a sustainable fashion,” he wrote. Two major potential donors have pulled out their money, but Maudlin noted donations were made to congratulate

Street Department applauded Mount Vernon Police asking for recent snow, ice removal for public’s help in shooting By Lois Mittino Gray Kudos to the Street Department was the order of the day at the January 18, meeting of the Mount Vernon Board of Public Works and Safety. Board Member Larry Williams lauded the employees for a tremendous job done with snow and ice removal in the recent biting cold. Mayor Bill Curtis seconded those comments and asked that Street Commissioner Max Diet-

Special to the News On Saturday, January 20, 2018, Mount Vernon Police Department Officers received several “shots fired” calls in the area of East Sixth Street. Several minutes later, officers were dispatched to Roadhouse Liquors in Mount Vernon, where they located a male victim with a gunshot wound.

The victim was transported to Deaconess Hospital. According to victims’ statements, the shooting occurred at East Sixth Street. The suspect vehicle is believed to be a light colored SUV with dark window tinting. If anyone has information in regards to the suspects or their location, you are asked to contact the Mount Vernon Police Department at (812) 838-8705.

Volunteer of the Year Phillip Wells was announced the United Way Volunteer of the Year at the annual meeting held Thursday, January 17, 2018 at the Alexandrian Public Library. Pictured with Wells is outgoing United Way President Michelle Hudson. TMI Contractors, a Pacesetter for the United Way, ran their campaign early and results were announced at the United Way of Posey County campaign kickoff on September 15, 2017. This is the first year that TMI has ran an employee campaign. Phillip Wells announced that the company would match employee contributions up to $15,000. This resulted in a 17.25 percent increase over last year’s donations. By Heather Morlan The Poseyville Town Council met on Monday, January 8, 2018 and they started off the new year appointing a Town Council President. Council Member Steve Ahrens moved that Bruce Baker continue to serve as Town Council President throughout 2018. Upon the motion being seconded by Ronald Fallowfield, said motion was approved, and it was unanimous that Bruce Baker will continue to serve as Town Council President for 2018. Next, there was a discussion regarding amendments to the town’s blight ordinance, with information provided by Marshal Charles Carter.
