By Lois Mittino Gray The recent heavy rains may have done wonders to resurrect the East Side Gravity Flow Sewer Project. It has been on hold on a backburner for months, due to contractor withdrawal legal issues. Mount Vernon Mayor Bill Curtis notified the Board of Works at its September 27, meeting that they were now free to take action, due to weather emergency and the recent need to pump out ditches in the former construction area. Since the contractor withdrew some months ago after the project was started, there are drainage problems in that area now, resulting from the roads not being repaired. “We have been advised to declare this an emergency situation. Once an emergency is declared, we can pass a resolution allowing us to seek quotes from contractors and go ahead with the project again,” he explained. Board member Larry Williams made a motion that a “Resolution Declaring an Emergency and Authorizing Quotes for the Completion of the Eastside Sewer Project” be passed. It was unanimously approved as Resolution 18-20. With this action, Lochmueller Engineering Group can proceed

Living the golden rule Jacobs’ finds doing for others is greatest reward By Pam Robinson Three words describe the major parts of Posey County native Wilma Jacobs’ life: faith, family, and food. In reviewing the quality of her farm life, however, the sum is far greater than the addition of the parts, primarily because her abiding faith has always guided her actions. Wilma Jacobs was born September 21, 1928, as she likes to describe it, “on the Point-Black Township line on the Point side.” The new 90-year-old was the youngest of three children to grace the marriage of Godfrey and Margaret (Ziegler) Schmitzer. Wilma speaks fondly of her late brother, John Schmitzer, the oldest, as well as the middle child, her late sister, Martha Brandt. Growing up on a family-owned farm during the Depression, Wilma understands was a blessing.
The Golden Years “My dad and aunt saved the farm in the Depression,” she recalls. “We never went hungry because there were always a few chickens that laid eggs, and there was a cow for your milk.” The farm is still in the Schmitzer family today, owned by the sons of Wilma’s late brother, John. As expected, Wilma and her sister, Martha, helped with women’s work on the farm. “My main chore was I had to get up at six o’clock every morning with my mom. She had a cow to milk, and I had a cow to milk. My sister stayed in the house and fixed the breakfast,” Wilma remembers.

using 26-gauge metal. Graber Post bid $75,396, while Phil Stoll Construction sent in a figure of $86,585. Posey County Highway Superintendent Steve Schenk said the Graber Post’s low bid also includes snow blocks. He recommended awarding Graber Post the job and the bid was approved 2-0. Martha Zigler appeared before the commissioners to present a petition signed by thirty-eight neighbors who live in the area around 2318 Parkside Street. Zigler said this property is abandoned and no longer maintained causing multiple issues with rodents and bugs. Posey County Council member Don Mattingly stated this property is in his district and has been an
