The Mount Vernon Christmas on Main Street is on December 7, 2013. Hedges Central’s two big gyms will host the Christmas Party. The Christmas Parade begins at 5 p.m. at Main and Tenth streets and continues to the riverfront where Santa will light the community Christmas tree. On Thursday, be prepared to visit the Alexandrian Public Library. But you will need to put on your PJ’s and join us for a trip on the Polar Express on Thursday, December 5 at 6:30 p.m. Listen to the classic story about a young boy’s trip to the North Pole, make a holiday craft, enjoy a snack, and have your picture taken with our special guest (could it be Santa? -yes!). No tickets or registration are required. According to organizer Becky Higgins, The River Bend Park is shaping up for its December 7 big day. Greenery will be added to the cross bars on the metal ornaments this week and the community Christmas tree will be installed. Mount Vernon should be proud on how everyone came together to work on this project. Christmas Shopping in the 1880s Suppose you were a town dweller in Mount Vernon in the ninetieth century, how would you prepare for the holidays? First of all, you must prepare the feast for Christmas morning. A good place to start would be to go to the Hankens and Harlem’s Goods Store. They have on hand 200 fat turkeys, 100 fat chickens, 25 fat geese, 25 fat ducks, a large lot of game, one barrel of choice mincemeat, two barrels of choice cranberries, 2 dozen choice celery, one barrel of coconuts, 5 barrels

of oranges, 5 boxes of lemons, 20 gallons of bulk oysters, 5 boxes of fancy rasins, and an endless supply of canned goods. Parking is no problem downtown because the Fuhrer Boyce and W. Stable and Wagon Yard has been leased for the season for all customers. Good shelter, safe stalls, and good water. Gifts in Mount Vernon are numerous; for instance, at the Western Star newspaper office you could purchase juvenile books, photograph and autograph albums, velvet picture frames, french harps, and shell boxes. At Schenks you could find a large assortment of gifts including skates, pocket knives, wringers, scissors, door and hand bells, firestands, shovels and tongs, meat cutters and stuffers, cross cut saws, axes, lanterns, shears, barn door hangers, grain shovels, game traps, and glass cutters. At Rosenbaum & Bros. you could find the latest thing in women’s wear which is a large cord with tassels attached which is worn around the waist of your special lady. Boots, shoes, and hats can be found at Raben and Naas and on Second Street, visit Henry Brinkman’s Farming Implements for buggies, wagons, and the ‘Posey Clipper,’ the best plow manufactured. At Henry Dexheimers on Main Street you can pick up all your bakery needs such as pies, cakes, and fresh bread, plus he has a full line of baby carriages. Finally, for those toy needs see Weckesser’s who has in abundance such items as doll heads and bodies for assembly, toy wagons, carts, wheelbarrows, tin horses, soldiers, animals, trumpets, horns, horses on rockers, pistols, guns, cannons, drums and mustache cups. Many

of the German traditions off Christmas were observed. Leading up to Christmas, the smells of cookies could be smelled from many kitchens as one walked the streets. Businesses and newspaper offices had candy andd cookie samplers of treats from lebkuchen to pfeffernuts and gingerdrops
