By Valerie Werkmeister The North Posey community is reeling from the news that beloved high school football coach, Carl Joe Gengelbach, will retire at the end of the school year, after 44 years of service. He wasn’t the only long-time teacher to turn in his retirement request in to school board members. Four long-time North Elementary School teachers will also leave at the end of the school year. They are following in Donna Nash’s footsteps, who retired in December. MSD of North Posey School Board members approved retire-
ment requests from Susie Crawford, Gerri Wagner, Mary Ann White and Karen Davis. Crawford has taught for 17 years, Wagner has taught for 35 years, White and Davis have both taught for 38 years. The loss of these experienced teachers will surely be felt in the elementary school. The board agreed to forge ahead with a large purchase of new technology for the school district, per Eric Long’s request. The district’s computer coordinator recommended the purchase of 75 computer stations for K-8 teachers’ utilization. The total cost is $75,915. Their cur-
rent machines will not go to waste. They will be tailored for student use in the classroom. Currently, those older computers range in age from five to eight years old. In addition, the board approved a three-year lease price of nearly $40,000 for four mobile computer labs with 30 stations per cart. Each school within the district is slated to receive one cart. This will be South Terrace’s first mobile lab while the other schools will now have two. Superintendent Dr. Todd Camp presented an overview of three

Coach Joe Gengelbach
Gengelbach says the time is right to step down By Dave Pearce In a move that caught many in the North Posey County community somewhat off-guard, long-time football coach Carl Joe Gengelbach this week submitted his intent to retire at the end of the current school year. Gengelbach, who has been at the school for 44 years and has been the school’s head basketball coach for 43 of those years, said on Sunday that he and his wife Shannon has talked about it at various times but nothing serious until recently. “As the years went on, I kept thinking that I was not getting any younger but the kids and the staff were so great to work with,” Gengelbach said. “If there was a time that I felt was right, I felt this was it. I can’t even imagine being in a better place or working in a better place than what we have had since we came here.
Gengelbach said he has told his wife, who retired a couple of years ago from her teaching position in the North Posey School system, that the 44 years that they have been in the community seem like just yesterday. “I never disliked getting up and going to work and there is sometimes talk about our kids slipping away but I think our kids, both the student body and those involved in athletics, and their parents have just been a privilege to have,” Gengelbach said. “And at my age, I am going to be 66, I would like to have a little time to do some things while I can still get out of bed, before I get to the point to where I can’t get out of bed.” Gengelbach said that the strength of the current staff and the younger kids coming up in the football program also played a part in his decision
