County takes first steps to flood recovery By Heather Allyn Road damage and high waters in Posey County could help make repairs and cleanup a little more bearable if Posey County is granted financial help from the “disaster” designation. At the Posey County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, March 1 Carrie Thompson from Posey County EMA announced that Posey County has been declared a disaster area due to the many roads and other damage caused by the floodwa-
ters. Thompson noted “this is the first step into the possibility of receiving funding from the state. It doesn’t guarantee that Posey County will receive any funding, but is a necessary step to be considered for state funds.” Charles Thompson noted that the EMS department would gladly present to any group such as clubs or scouts a 30-45 minute community education program geared toward your needs. If you are interested in having someone speak to your group, con-
tact Carrie Thompson at 812-838-1319 to schedule. Commission President Jim Alsop opened the meeting with a moment of silence for John Sherretz, former Posey County Commissioner who passed away last week. The Commissioners handled a variety of items. • Grant writer Debra Bennett-Stearsman presented bids for the blight elimination of three properties totaling $42,864. She requested that the commissioners take the
quote under advisement and revisit it at a future meeting. • The county lawyer mailed a letter to the owner of 11948 Diamond Island Road regarding the nuisance complaint and the abandoned vehicle complaint. The concern has not been resolved. Commissioners decided to take further action by requesting Adam Farrar, attorney, to file suit against the property owner.

While Booker T. has not been utilized as an operating school for many years, the school corporation continues to use the building as a storage facility. The school corporation has been approached many times before regarding the sale of Booker T. to private investors — however, none have progressed as far as the most recent inquiry from Pioneer Development Services, Inc.
