Mount Vernon getting new water tower By Lois Mittino Gray Soon a 200 foot tall, 2.1 million gallon water tower will dot the skyline of Mount Vernon. This will be the last phase of the major city water improvement project, mostly completed by 2015. The holdup on the tower all these years has been finding a suitable location. Members of the Mount Vernon Common Council learned at the April 12, meeting that the search may be over soon. Mayor Bill Curtis told council members that there is a site that would be good for their purposes, available on the east side of town. City Attorney Beth McFadin Higgins said that she may need appraisals for the completion of this project.

The Mount Vernon Board of Works met earlier that day and voted unanimously to give Mayor Curtis permission to get options and proceed with negotiations for the purchase. It was also approved at the Water Utility Board meeting and later approved by the Common Council members to proceed. Money is already set aside from the original project grant for the purchase, according to Utilities Superintendent Chuck Gray. Superintendent Gray also said they were doing some digging behind the post office due to an obstruction, which has now been removed. Councilman Andy Hoehn asked him if the East Side Gravity Flow Sewer Project is now

on hold? Gray replied yes, and as much as he hates to say it, it may be indefinitely at this time. Mayor Curtis stated they have completed testing to know what is serviceable of what has already been done. They are looking to get the patching done, then repave as part of the Community Crossings Grant project. Councilman Hoehn continued the discussion by asking if it is correct that the construction company has not been paid, and the city is not the hold up, but rather SRF (State Revolving Fund) officials. Mayor Curtis explained that was correct. SRF needs to be sure that work is completed and acceptable. Councilman Hoehn asked if the money will be released

By Pam Robinson The future is now at South Terrace Elementary School in Wadesville. Teachers and students alike, grades K-6, are literally reaping the harvest of aeroponic technology at work in three tower gardens started this past February. The tower gardens grow vegetables without soil or sunlight. It’s an amazing process that works with a variety of vegetables as long as they aren’t root vegetables such as turnips and carrots. South Terrace boasts three tower gardens inside: one just outside the office, one in the library, and one just inside Entrance 5. To build a tower garden, the gardeners stack interlocking circular containers trimmed with hollow pockets to hold seed cubes. Principal Kelly Carlton says the tower gardens at South Terrace are stacked as tall as they can go. The stacked containers set atop a round tank filled with water. On top of the highest container, the light system is attached—four LED lights draping down like octopus arms. Both the water and the lights are set on timers to simulate outdoor growing conditions. Nonetheless, the tower gardens require human hands to grow. Teachers and students planted the

Citizens reminded to dispose of grass clippings properly By Lois Mittino Gray “It’s mowing season,” Street Commissioner Max Dieterle announced at the Mount Vernon Board of Public Works Meeting on April 12 in City Hall. “That means it’s time to remind citizens not to blow grass clippings into the street, as it clogs the drains. We don’t want any grass clippings put into cans for garbage pickup, either. We need to compost them and keep them out of the landfill.” Superintendent Dieterle reminded everyone to take grass clippings, branches and weeds to the City’s Limb Yard on Leonard Road, near the Herb Curry Company. Hours are Wednesday and

soon?Attorney Higgins replied the percentage of work that is done and declared functional is what the company will be getting paid for within the next 30 days. In other council matters: • Street and Light Chairwoman Becky Higgins announced she has been getting a lot of inquiries about Spring Clean Up Week, and it will be the week of May 14. • In legal matters, a public hearing on the Ordinance of Additional Appropriations in the Public Safety Tax Fund was opened by the Mayor Curtis. Truly an original Vintage home tour offers something for the sixth-sense By Pam Robinson Where there are better homes and quaint gardens, there are often friendly ghosts and beauteous blossoms — along with so much more — to charm one’s interest and imagination. The 2018 Vintage Home and Garden Tour on Saturday afternoon, June 2, promises to delight visitors’ senses, including the sixth sense, as they tour four historic homes and St. Matthew Catholic Church, all in Mount Vernon. Sponsored by the Women’s Fund Board of the Posey County Community Foundation, or PCCF, the tour features only one home viewed on a previous tour. Homeowners Mike and Carol Smith have remodeled their Third Street home so extensively, however, it seems like a different venue. Also on display are the homes and gardens of husband and wife teams Shelly Blunt and Steve Glueckert, Scott and Holly Branam and Mark and Zeidy Nelson.

Last Monday, April 16, Shelly Blunt opened the Blunt-Glueckert home at 623 Mulberry, believed to have been built in 1895. After a clockwise turn of the original doorbell, a loud chime ushers in her visitors. Once inside, anyone will recognize the home is truly an original. Since their purchase of the home four years ago, Blunt says she and her husband have done considerable restorative work. “We haven’t changed the integrity of anything in the house,” she states. To the contrary, on the main
