WMI proposes William Maclure Conservatory for NHS By Valerie Werkmeister The Working Men’s Institute (WMI) special projects committee to save the former New Harmony School building presented their vision on a future use for the school to members of the New Harmony Town Council during a special meeting last Thursday afternoon. Committee chair, Nathan Maudlin, delivered the presentation and said the committee envisions the school as a division of the WMI and would carry on the tradition and history that WMI founder, William Maclure intended. Going forward, the school would be renamed the William Maclure Conservatory of Useful Knowledge and would provide
space for arts and crafts, vocational and entrepreneurial uses, climate-controlled storage and youth programs. Maudlin stated since the school is no longer in use, WMI feels it is their duty to carry on the tradition Maclure envisioned when he built the institute in 1838 by providing classes that would benefit the community. These classes will help people learn an art or a skill they can later turn into a business. WMI feels it can attract artists away from higher-priced locales to reside in New Harmony and use the space as their “home base” before traveling to other locations to market their wares. The conservatory will act as sort of an ambassador to the historic town to at-
tract new residents and provide more economic opportunities for the town. Maudlin added the Conservatory will be
an influential part of New Harmony’s cul-

Public input on NP gyms sought for May 7 By Valerie Werkmeister Will North Posey’s elementary schools get new gymnasiums? That question may be answered soon as the MSD of North Posey School Board plans to hold a special meeting on Thursday, May 7, at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the matter. The board recently approved a number of capital projects at the high school and junior high when they signed the design-build contract with Performance Services. The entity is currently working on a project and price list for the elementary schools. A design-build contract allows the school corporation to specifically choose the types of projects they feel they can afford. Up for discussion at both North Elementary and South Terrace Elementary Schools is the construction of two new gymnasiums with a seating capacity of approximately 389 adults. It will be large enough for a full-size basketball court as well as enough room to walk around the entire court. Additionally, Performance Services has been asked
to provide pricing to include a concession stand, locker rooms and bleachers. The company has not yet completed their analysis and therefore, none of the school board members nor has Superintendent Dr. Todd Camp received any information on the cost of the project. It is their intent to keep the total cost of the project around $1.9 million. One of the corporation’s bonds is set to expire in 2017. They intend to keep the cost of this project in the same range in order to keep the cost neutral for tax payers. The only area that will see a slight increase will be residents in the New Harmony area who are part of what Camp considers ‘New North Posey.’ When New Harmony School was consolidated and its students came to North Posey, their taxes were not increased. However, new capital projects will increase their taxes by approximately 10 cents. Those residents who were already within the North Posey school district are currently paying on the bonds that are set to expire. By
