Tragedy strikes in Stewartsville home Maple Hill trash pick-up set
Volunteers are invited to help with the annual Maple Hill Road Walk on Thursday, April 11, beginning at 5 p.m. We’ll pick up trash along both sides of the road going south out of town to Highway 69. Meet at Maple Hill Cemetery; gloves and trash bags will be supplied. Scott Champlin will provide traffic control. Please mark the date and time and plan to help out! We have lots of fun and usually finish in about an hour.
MVYB raff e tickets available
Every child who plays MVYB will be out trying to sell raffle tickets to help pay for uniforms, equipment and other things needed to play baseball. Please help them and us out by purchasing one or more of these tickets. Each ticket costs $5 with a chance to win $500. Tickets are available from players or any MVYB board member.

By Dave Pearce Three children are left without either of their parents as the result of an apparent murder-suicide which occurred just before noon on Sunday in Stewartsville. According to information provided by Posey County Sheriff Greg Oeth and Posey County Coroner Jay Price, John David Carney, 33, and Erica Nicole Davis, 30, died in their home on West Street in Stewartsville. The two lived together for “quite some time,” Oeth said. Price said that the call came in to Central Dispatch at 11:42 Sunday morning and Posey County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene. The actual call came in from the sister of the alleged victim’s mother and sister. “The victim’s sister was the latter to call in and she passed along that the mother had reported to her that there had been gunshots at the residence,” Posey County Sheriff Greg Oeth said. “The deputies were met at the scene by family members. Field to Finish Reception set
The annual “First Brush of Spring” Field to Finish juried exhibit is scheduled for Wednesday, April 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hoosier Salon New Harmony Gallery, 507 Church Street. The Field to Finish event is open to the public and provides an excellent opportunity to meet with the nearly 200 artists who will be visiting in town during this year’s Plein Air Paint Out. Exhibit awards will be presented at 6 p.m.

Join in Mount Vernon’s Azalea Trails Walk this Sat., April 13, beginning at 10 a.m. The guided walk starts at the beautiful riverfront plaza and winds through both the downtown historic district and the Welborn historic district, ending back at the riverfront plaza. Walkers will explore all three azaleas trails, a total of 2.6 miles. Although no azaleas are in bloom now, participants will see plenty of spring flowers reaching toward the sun and will enjoy a glimpse at historic homes in Mount Vernon. Bring a friend and celebrate spring by participating in this free event.
Deputy positions open
Posey County Sheriff Greg Oeth has announced that applications are being accepted for the position of deputy at the Posey County Sheriff’s Department. Basic qualifications include a high school diploma, a U.S. citizen, and 21 years of age with a valid drivers’ license. Applications may be picked up at the Posey County Sheriff’s Office at 1200 O’Donnell Road in Mount Vernon. Applications will be accepted until April 26.
Special to the News As a result of an undercover investigation by the Posey County Drug Task Force, a local man has been arrested on drug dealing charges. On April 3, 2013, personnel of the task force obtained a Class “A” felony arrest warrant for Alan Dale Spillman of rural Posey County for Dealing Methamphetamine. The arrest warrant was the result of an undercover investigation which included an undercover drug buy made from him involving methamphetamine. Personnel from the Posey County Drug Task Force were also able
to obtain a search warrant for his residence located on Zoar Church Road in rural Posey County. During the early morning hours of April 4, 2013, personnel of the Posey County Drug Task Force, Posey County Sheriff’s Department, FBI task force officers and the Indiana State Police Swat Team assembled in preparation for executing the arrest and search warrants. While enroute to Spillman’s residence, a task force officer of the FBI spotted Spillman traveling westbound on West Fourth Street in Mount Vernon. The vehicle was stopped on SR 69 South at which time he was taken into custody on
the active arrest warrant. Following the arrest, law enforcement personnel continued to Spillman’s residence and executed the search warrant. During the search of the mobile home, officers discovered an active clandestine methamphetamine laboratory inside along with finished meth and numerous loaded firearms. Alan Dale Spillman, age 66 was lodged in the Posey County Jail awaiting arraignment. Spillman is believed to be a major manufacturer of methamphetamine in Posey County. An investigation is continuing and further charges may be filed.

A critical incident debriefing training session will be held on May 3, 4 and 5. Commissioner Jerry Walden gave a few highlights of a recent trip through Knox County. Walden spoke about his tours of new jail facilities with pods and halfway houses. He mentioned these facilities were eye-opening points on possible future needs here in Posey County. Posey County residents are urged to sign-up for the Code Red Emergency Alert System. Emergency Management Agency Director, Larry Robb, urged all Posey County residents to sign up for this valuable tool. In an emergency, a phone call will be placed to the phones registered, notifying the citizens via
mass communication quickly. The free service is available to all Posey County residents. Home phones or cell phones may be used to register for the alert notices. Visit the county’s website at www.poseycountygov.org and click on the Code Red link. Highway superintendent, Steve Schenk, requested permission to seek bids for the construction of a new bridge behind Wesselman’s Shopping Center in Mount Vernon. He stated bids will be received May 20 and 21. His request was approved. Schenk also advised that the county may be able to afford repairs on another bridge this year and recommended Bridge #64, on Barrett-Switch Rd. Schenk stated the permit process takes approximately four months. By the time the permits are approved and ready, his crew would be ready to perform the work. Schenk felt this would be the best choice and described the
project as the easiest and most affordable. Permits will be valid for a two-year period, so if it is not completed this year, it could easily be done next year. A bridge on High School Road is in need of minor concrete repairs. Schenk advised it would be easier and cheaper for his crew to perform the work in order to get it removed from the bridge repair list. He stated they would complete the work once the creek dries up underneath to make it easier to pour the concrete underneath it. Schenk’s request to advertise a 1993 Caterpillar Excavator as surplus equipment was approved. He stated they have spent approximately $68,000 in repairs over the past few years. He will contact other county road supervisors to see if they are interested as well as placing an ad on Cragislist. In other business, the commis-

MVJHS to present ‘Disney’s Aladdin Jr.’ on Friday By Jerry Funkhouser Theater lovers of all ages are invited to hop on a magic carpet ride inside the Performing Arts Center at MVHS as students bring to life the popular animated film, “Disney’s Aladdin Jr.” Bursting with magical characters, memorable music, lively dancing and flying carpet rides, audience members’ spirits will soar with excitement. In Agrabah, City of Enchantment, Aladdin, a kind and crafty street beggar, falls in love with gorgeous Princess Jasmine. However, the Sultan, Jasmine’s father, states that Princess Jasmine must select a husband within the next day. After she rejects marriage proposals from several wealthy men, Jasmine must choose between Aladdin and Jafar. With assistance from a madcap genie, Aladdin takes Jasmine’s hand in marriage. The show includes several famous songs including “Arabian Nights,” “A Whole New World,” “Prince Ali,” “Friend Like Me” and “Why Me?” “Disney’s Aladdin Jr.” is directed by Cheryl Weber with assistance from Julie Kissinger.
