Evansville man arrested for local robbery
Scott Smith By Dave Pearce An Evansville man will be a guest in the Posey County Jail for the foreseeable future after he was arrested Friday evening and charged with bank robbery. According to Posey County Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Tom Latham, it happened just after noon Friday at the First Federal Savings on St. Philips Road, which is near the VanderburghPosey County line. According to Latham, Smith parked his blue Volvo SUV in the center of the bank’s parking lot and then entered the bank, wearing only sunglasses as a disguise. He told tellers to hand him money and specified that he wanted a particular quantity of hundreds, twenties, tens, fives, and ones. “After obtaining the money, he simply turned around and walked out,” Latham said. “After talking with some of his acquaintances, he apparently had told them that

Latham indicated the vehicle and the get-away car were clear on the bank’s surveillance video and that word of the robbery and the get-away car spread quickly among area law enforcement, particularly in Evansville. Evansville officers indicated
they believed they recognized the description of the vehicle and that a vehicle matching that description had been seen on Morgan Avenue a few minutes before. Police questioned some known acquaintances of the man they suspected, based on the banks tape and prior arrest records. Within a couple of hours, police located the suspect at Vann Apartments in Evansville. Smith was in the apartment with two females. The females left the apartment and Smith told police he
Cynthiana Town Hall gets heated over abandoned vehicles ordinance By Dave Pearce One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Nowhere was that more apparent than at the Cynthiana Town Hall meeting on Wednesday evening as Cynthiana businessman Rex Yarbor sparred with “old friend” and town board member Patti Wilson. The Town Board of Cynthiana, in an effort to help clean up some of the unsightly scenery, passed an ordinance a few months ago using state ordinances to define “abandoned vehicles” and doing what the state allows to help rid the town of such vehicles. However, Posey County Commissioner Carl Schmitz was present at Wednesday’s meeting and told the board that it is not a county policy to cite businesses who might have abandoned vehicles on commercial property. Town attorney Jason Spindler, presiding over the meeting in the absence of Town Board President Todd Kennedy, responded to the comment made by Schmitz. Spindler indicated that under state statutes, the town is well within their rights to cite anyone with
abandoned vehicles on their property in the view of the public. Spindler presided over the meeting and eventually decided to close the meeting, but not before Yarbor had sparred back and forth, mostly with Wilson, for most of 30 minutes. Spindler again went through the state’s definition of an abandoned vehicle and Yarbor agreed that by state’s definition, he had some abandoned vehicles on his property. However, Yarbor contended that the board had singled him out with the ordinance because of the nature of his business. During the discussion, Yarbor indicated that there are times when people bring unlicensed vehicles to his place of business for them to be repaired. He also indicated that at times, they are there for more than the 30 days specified in the ordinance. Yarbor indicated that he has been in business in Cynthiana for nearly 40 years and he feels that mem-

was not going to leave the apartment. However, the Evansville SWAT team was dispatched to the scene and Smith surrendered peacefully. Latham indicated that the booking photo and a photo secured from a social networking site were an exact match, even wearing identical sunglasses. Smith was booked into the Posey County Jail on charges of robbery, a Level Five Felony, that carries a sentence of one to
six years if Smith is convicted. He was also charged with theft of over $700, a Level Six Felony. Latham indicated he believes most of the cash was recovered. There were just over two hours between the time of the robbery and Smith’s arrest. Latham indicated on Sunday that 28-year-old Scott Smith remains lodged in the Posey County Jail on a $35,000 bond after he was arrested and charged with the robbery of the St. Phillip Branch of First Federal Savings Bank.
