Sewer project one step closer

The Alexandrian Public Library Board of Trustees and Director gathered Tuesday, August 21 to honor the Noelle family, who made a generous donation to APL to underwrite all of the seating in the newly landscaped garden area along Main Street. The Alexandrian Public Library is immensely grateful and honored to memorialize longtime patrons Albert and Louise Noelle. By Theresa Bratcher Members of the Posey County Council learned this week that when budget hearings roll around for September 11-13 of this month, the Council will have to try to find a way to do more with less this year. If early projections are accurate, the maximum levy for the County will have a growth quotient of only 1.0340 percent this year. According to Posey County Auditor Sarah Beth Meighen, this leaves the County with a maximum growth of $360,203, considerable less than last year. Meighen explained the Council must review the Non-Binding Unit budgets by September 3 this year. Meighen stated these could be reviewed at the upcoming Joint Meeting at the end of August. However, on a more positive note, the longstanding problem of

INDOT, city street renovation project dealt blow By Lois Mittino Gray Mayor Bill Curtis made a surprise announcement at the August 16 meeting of the Mount Vernon Common Council when he gave an update on the Main Street Trail Project under Old Business. The Indiana Department of Transpor-

tation (INDOT) partnered with the City in 2014 to plan and design the project that would continue street renovation from the riverfront up Main Street through the heart of the community. Mayor Curtis told the council that construction bids were opened

the prior week at the INDOT offices. Only two bids were submitted and the lower bid was $1.42 million dollars over the estimate of six million as a total project investment. As a result, the grant was deemed “not awardable” as it is too much over the estimate. He

added INDOT officials are looking at the bid tabulations to try to see where and what happened and how to best move forward, if at all. The Mayor assured council members that he would keep them informed as soon as he had more news.

The Main Street Trail is envisioned in all phases to go from the riverfront to Brittlebank Park, a total of two miles including streetscapes and a neighborhood pocket park.
