The National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) advocates for the armed SRO to fulfill a triple role encompassing three major functions: law enforcer, educator and
informal counselor Mayor Bill Curtis presided as the board voted to move forward with a Memo of Understanding (MOU) between the City and the MSD of Mount Vernon in reference to the SRO. Attorney Beth McFadin Higgins reviewed it and she has it ready to present at the Mount Vernon School Board meeting on August 6 for approval.

By Lois Mittino Gray Members of the Mount Vernon Common Council were pleased to learn at its August 2, meeting that the city Phosphorus Removal Plant will soon be in operation. Utilities Superintendent Chuck Gray reported that the phosphate project is now completed and the first load of chemicals will be in around August 9. “We will be in full compliance by the end of the year,” Gray said with pride.
The total cost of the project was $839,509, including $12,000 in change orders. Mayor Curtis thought it was good that the change orders added less than 1.5 percent to the project. In Legals, the council voted to pass on first reading an ordinance to create two handicap spots at Fourth and Walnut Streets, at the request of the Elks Lodge.

Playground fundraiser set at Hawg ‘N’ Sauce By Pam Robinson Hawg ‘N’ Sauce in Mount Vernon will set the stage at 6580 Leonard Road for a special announcement and kickoff fundraiser this Saturday, August 11, at 6 p.m. That evening, the entire design will be unveiled of Avery’s Place, a universally accessible playground project, planned for Riverbend Park in Mount Vernon. The evening will include a door prize and music on the patio. At the same time, the community will be encouraged to sponsor the playground project with monetary or in-kind donations to bring the $700,000 vision to life. Playground committee member Rachel Deno provided information regarding the kickoff fundraiser and the playground project, the brainchild last year of her daughter, Sydney, now a 15-yearold sophomore at Mount Vernon High School. Deno explained the approximately 8,750 squarefoot playground will be built to celebrate the life of Avery Beste. Beste passed away in 2008 at age 18 after battling a genetic disorder, Partial Trisomy 13. “She was always smiling,” Deno recalled about the young woman. Allowing a sneak-peek, Deno shared the playground will have a rural, agricultural theme for its design. “We felt the rural, agri-
