Parts of history to be preserved Company with Posey ties seeks to salvage items By Lois Mittino Gray Kent Ahrenholtz, President of FHG Architectural Salvage, appeared before the Mount Vernon Board of Public Works meeting on August 20 to help save good parts from the old bones of houses being torn down through the Blight Eradication Project (BEP). His business requested permission to salvage parts from many of these homes being demolished through the urban blight program. “Many of our customers are looking to replace pieces from their historic homes. It’s starting to catch on in this area. People used to drive to Indianapolis, Louisville or Nashville for parts. Our most popular item is old doors, but we take hinges, stairwells, newels, woodwork, fireplaces, fixtures and tubs and sinks,” he explained. Salvage items go to the FHG store at 823 East Franklin in Evansville which has been open since September. Kent’s partner, Laura Spradley, also attended the meeting
and said she plans to open a similar shop soon in New Harmony. After discussion with BEP Coordinator Sherri Willis, the board gave the firm salvage rights. They agreed to seal the houses tight and secure until everything is salvaged and they will provide their own liability insurance. They are experienced having already done 50-55 houses out of 120 recently demolished in Evansville. The agreement pends on review by City Attorney Beth McFadin Higgins. Mayor John Tucker reflected on the pending demolitions saying, “In a perfect world, people take care of their property. Historical homes are in disrepair. At least we’re not losing that history and someone can use it. The less we put in landfills, the better.” Willis had a list of items to be salvaged from the old

No reports were given by town employees, the town marshal or the fire department. As they say, no news is good news. Council members noted that a generator is finally in place at the Poseyville Community Center. Once the gas line is installed, the generator will be able to keep the building operational in the event of a power outage. erate and maintain a transit system and identify the needs of those who would utilize the system. Walden stated the commissioners will be discussing the topic during their meeting this morning, Tuesday, August 18. John Taylor of the Posey County Economic Development Coalition informed council members that Midwest Fertilizer Company has let out bids for the groundwork to be completed on the Mount Vernon site. The company is anticipating a groundbreaking ceremony will occur in December or January. Walden also discussed some of the challenges regarding the path the bypass around Mount Vernon will take. The commissioners are interested in constructing a railway overpass in Mount Vernon so that vehicle traffic isn’t delayed during construction of the bypass and the fertilizer plant. Plans have not been finalized and there are still many choices to be made. The next town council meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 9, at 4:30 p.m. The meeting will begin with a public hearing on the town budget.
