More students, opportunities now at North Posey By Valerie Werkmeister Things continue to look good for the Metropolitan School District of North Posey. Following the announcement this week that one of their own had won the Peabody Educator of the Year for Region 2, Dr. Todd Camp shared more good news this week. When enrollment numbers are calculated late this week, the number of students attending North Posey Schools will be up, probably somewhere between 30 and 40 students. Even following a year of increased enrollment with New Harmony students coming into the fold last year, the district will likely see significant growth again this year. Camp and board members have indicated it is a credit to the schools and the staffs at the North Posey Schools. Also noted has been the addition of sev-

eral colleges and college level courses that are now being offered at North Posey High School.thanks to members of the staff and the work of Dr. Angela Wannemuehler, Director of Curriculum, Assessments & Special Programs. During last week’s meeting of the school board, the board also approved a long list of personnel employment and resignations, including the resignation of Kevin Smith as an English teacher and North Posey High School baseball coach effective immediately. Natalie Barnard’s request to resign as the Assistant Softball Coach at North Posey High School effective immediately was also accepted. Board members approved the employment of the following individuals: Leeanna Wassmer and Debbie Herrmann as instructional assistants at North Elemen-

tary School (NES); Kassandra Duncan as PE and Health teacher at North Posey High School (NPHS); Jami Atkinson as an English teacher at NPHS; Amanda King and Jordan Stock as instructional assistants at STES; Paula McNeely, Gayla Schapker and Larry Kahle as long term substitutes covering three maternity leaves at NPHS; Mary Gish and Jeannette Sturgell as bus drivers; Jim Scheller as boys’ basketball coach at NES; Jason Wilson as girls’ basketball coach at NES; Casey Thomas as the junior varsity volleyball coach at NPHS; Morgan Stierley as volleyball coach for NPJH; Justin Wagner as volunteer assistant NPHS football coach; and Jason Boyle as volunteer assistant girls’ golf coach at NPHS. A number of resignations were approved and included the following: Nikki Flannery resigned as an instruction assistant at South

Terrace Elementary School. (STES); Haleigh Thomas resigned as a speech pathologist at STES and NES; and Casey Thomas resigned as volleyball coach at NPJH. Homeschooled students will now be able to participate in athletics at the school, provided certain criteria are met. Board members approved an Athletics Eligibility Policy that includes the homeschooled students following a ruling by the IHSAA. According to the April 29 press release the criteria includes: 1) the student, in conjunction with the school, provide proof to the IHSAA that the spirit of the eligibility rules will not be compromised including passing a physical examination and participating in the required number of practices in a given sport; 2) the student must have been

Abatements aid Sabic, CountryMark with plans By Valerie Werkmeister Posey County Council members granted approval for two abatement requests during their monthly meeting on August 13. Representatives from Sabic and Countrymark were on hand to provide information about their requests. As part of their agreement, Sabic will retain 22 employees and will use local suppliers and contractors for their expansion project. Countrymark officials were requested to attend the meeting to give a status update on their current tax abatement. It was initially requested in 2009. They purchased $37 million in new manufacturing equipment and invested $171,000 in IT equipment. The abatement term was 50 percent over a five year term. In addition, Countymark outlined plans for a new project involving facility and equipment upgrades. They plan to invest $13.6 million to construct a new building that will replace their current shelter house. The current struc-

ture is largely used by the community and its employees for private and community events. They intend to add community outreach programs and educate local youth on what the company produces. Council members used their tax abatement matrix to score the project and approved the request. They will receive a 10-year abatement for the new shelter house and manufacturing equipment. Council members also approved several reimbursements to the county general fund including $984.90 from the Sheriff’s Department. The funds are a reimbursement from the FBI task force, of which Deputy Jeremy Fortune is a member of. A $650 reimbursement from the insurance company was approved for damage incurred on a patrol car last December. A reimbursement of $7,374 was approved for the ambulance fund; $11,466.30 was received from the insurance company for the replacement of the courthouse roof and $119 was

Works board dominated by pagoda, River Days talk By Lois Mittino Gray The Riverfront was at the forefront of the Mount Vernon Board of Public Works August 22 meeting. The Board discussed a new small pagoda, improvements and the upcoming River Days Festival on the riverfront slated for September 13-15. Common Council Member Becky Higgins appeared before the Board to discuss necessary street closings, especially since there will be so many events. On Saturday the Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club is planning a 5K run, there is a pet parade and then the big parade is at 6 p.m. She asked that there be no parking on Main Street between Second and Fourth streets from 4 until 7 p.m. due to the parade. That same area will need to be blocked off on Sunday for the car show. Participation in the festival is growing with 148 exhibit booths and 35 food booths on Water Street planned for this year. Police Chief Grant Beloat told the Board he will be adding more hours for security, starting earlier on Friday and Saturday, but not more manpower. The Board voted to split the cost of the security 50/50 between the city and River Days Com- Continued on Page A3

By Lois Mittino Gray Just weeks after Pope Francis’ historical visit to Brazil for World Youth Days, Michele Gondi sits in her Mount Vernon classroom and beams just thinking about the positive effect he has on her students and the young people of the world. “He is so humble and yet so strong. What an example for everyone!” Gondi has a special place in her heart for the pope due to their “Argentine Connection.” Michele was born in New York to Argentinean parents who moved the family back to the South American country when she was 8 years old. She lived in Castelar, near Buenos Aires and grew up, married and had two children there. Her sister lived in Mount Vernon and on a stateside visit,

Michele and her husband found they really liked the area. They decided to move here in 2001 when times got tough economically in Argentina. She now resides in Mount Vernon with her husband who works for General Electric/Sabic and two sons, Ezekiel and Julian. An American citizen, Michele settled in easily and updated her college degrees at USI. After subbing for awhile, she joined the staff of St. Matthew School in 2002 where she teaches a mixture of Spanish, music, art, and religion class in the pre-K to fifth grade school. She believes in “immersion” teaching of the language and all directions and conversation for her other
