By Dave Pearce A Posey County couple remains lodged in the Posey County Jail following their arrest on Thursday. Posey County Sheriff Greg Oeth announced the arrest of Michael G. Chamlee, 45, and Joanne Chamlee, 26, of rural Posey County. The arrest was the culmination of an investigation into the pair’s involvement with methamphetamine and violations of gun laws. On Thursday, July 21, 2011, while executing a warrant for the arrest of Mrs. Chamlee, deputies observed a firearm in the Chamlee’s Hastings Lane home. Hastings Lane is in Point Township. An agent of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives obtained a search warrant to investigate the possible presence of other firearms. During the subsequent search of the residence, 12 types of assorted guns were seized. Additionally, evidence was revealed indicating activities of clandestine methamphetamine manufacturing. The Posey County Narcotics Unit responded with an additional search warrant that lead to the discovery of an active meth lab, illegal drugs, and

drug related items at various locations throughout the property. Arrested without incident were: Joanne Chamlee who was preliminarily charged with Manufacturing Methamphetamine (Class A Felony), Possession of Precursors with intent to manufacture (Class D Felony), Possession of Methamphetamine (Class C Felony), and Maintaining a Common Nuisance. Michael Chamlee who was preliminarily charged with Manufacturing Methamphetamine (Class A Felony), Possession of Precursors with intent to manufacture (Class C Felony due to the presence of firearms), Unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent offender (Class B Felony), and Possession of Methamphetamine (Class C Felony). New Harmony Council considers noise ordinance options By Pam Robinson The New Harmony Town Council is considering how best to enforce, and possibly how best to amend, its noise ordinance following a presentation by resident Hugh Thompson at the Thursday, July 21, meeting. Thompson noted the excessive noise, smoke and debris that polluted his home at 912 Church Street and the homes in his neighborhood as a result of private Fourth of July fireworks celebrations. The proof was in the brown paper grocery bag filled with spent fireworks casings and litter that Thompson found in his yard alone and brought as evidence to town council. He cited Indiana Code 22-11-14 that leaves it up to municipalities to set the boundaries for fireworks celebrations and to establish noise control. Thompson asked for council support and said

he knew others in town would appreciate council’s assistance also. Indeed, two audience members— residents Jim Stinson and Wayne Conyers—immediately spoke to “offer support” for Thompson’s concerns. Town Council President David Campbell then read from the municipal noise ordinance and said Thompson’s request would be taken seriously. New Harmony resident and business owner Lena Feiner then asked if the noise ordinance might not be amended to require a permit and a designated area for the private use of fireworks. Campbell reiterated that Thompson’s request would be addressed. In other business: •Council President David Campbell announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, or DNR,

will hold a meeting at Thrall’s Opera House on Wednesday, July 27, at 9 a.m. to discuss the water situation and risk assessment. •Councilman Joe Straw reported that the new police care will be put into service on Wednesday, July 27. •It was announced that the town had received recognition from the Center for Disease Control, or CDC, earning a fluoride award for maintaining appropriate levels of fluoride in the water. •It was reported that storm damage repairs are being made at the wastewater treatment plant. •Jeanne Maudlin with the Parks Board made a number of announcements: 1) the 2nd Annual Chili Cookoff will be held this year on October 15, with applications available at the August town council meeting; 2) Tri Kappa was recognized for purchasing two more

wire picnic tables for Murphy Park; 3) the Soil and Water Conservation District tree sale was highlighted with tree enthusiasts encouraged to purchase trees for the town; 4) the Parks Board is applying for additional grants; 5) Councilman Joe Straw and the town council was recognized for maintaining trails; 6) town residents and visitors were challenged to adopt a Leave No Trace ethic and to properly dispose of all litter, including cigarette butts and other small trash, and keep the town clean. •Town Attorney Nathan Maudlin presented $350 in checks from members of the Workingmen’s Institute, donations for the new fire and emergency medical station.
