Flooding in Point breaks 60-year record By Dave Pearce Records appear to be falling in Point Township. But the water level isn’t. That is not a good thing if you are a resident of the area and have seen what has happened to the area during the Flood of 2011. “Point Township is going to crest at 55 and the old record is 54,” Federal Emergency Management Director Larry Robb said on Sunday afternoon. “That record of 54 was set in 1950. This will be a full foot above that 1950 level. This will be the fourth highest level ever recorded at the J.T. Myers Locks and Dam.” Robb pointed out that while residents of the area have done everything they could do, there are houses that are currently sustaining damage in Posey’s southwestern-most region. “There’s just no way to know how bad the damage is until the water goes down.” Robb said. “Point Township has evacuated a lot of people in the last week or so. A lot of people saw
it coming and took steps way in advance of it getting to the critical level.” Just as in years past, Point Township Church of the Nazarene has served as a shelter for those seeking refuge from the excessive water but while the people there will remain dry, Robb said that even the main road to the church would be closed later on Sunday evening to everything but large vehicles. “Bonebank Road will be closed and all the other roads around it are flooded,” Robb explained. “But again, you are looking at a 60-year record flood.” Robb said that the church has generously opened its facilities but that many in the area are staying with friends and family while a few have brought campers to the church parking lot. “They are a hard-working group of people down there and they look out for each other,”

Americans celebrate death of bin Laden The mastermind of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks -- the worst terrorist attacks on American soil -- was killed by U.S. forces Monday in a mansion in Abbottabad, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, U.S. officials said. Washington is nine hours behind Pakistan. Four others in the compound also were killed. One of them was bin Laden’s adult son, and another was a woman being used as a shield by a male combatant, the officials said. Brennan said it is his understanding that the woman was one of bin Laden’s wives, and that she “reportedly was used as a shield to shield bin Laden from the incoming fire.”

He added that it was his understanding that bin Laden picked up a weapon and was killed in the firefight with the U.S. forces carrying out the assault. “He was engaged in a firefight,” Brennan said of bin Laden. “Whether or not he got off any rounds, I don’t know.” As reactions poured in from all over the world to the announcement that terrorist leader bin Laden was killed Sunday in a U.S. operation, Obama declared Monday “a good day for America.” “Our country kept its commitment to see that justice is done,” Obama said. The world, he said, is a better place because of bin Laden’s death, and the successful operation reminds Americans that there is “nothing we can’t do” when they work together.
Sewer rate hike is less than expected
By Pam Robinson The Mount Vernon City Council unanimously approved the third and final reading of the sewer rate ordinance (numbered 11-02) at the Monday, April 11, meeting. Council could pass along good news to city sewer customers: the rate increase for sewer only has dropped from a proposed 25.4 percent to 19.3 percent. After the meeting, Mayor John Tucker explained what the increase would mean in dollars and cents. Sewer customers now pay $7.40 per 1,000 gallons usage; the new rate will go up $1.43 to $8.83 per 1,000 gallons usage. The average monthly sewer bill runs $29.60 per 4,000 gallons; now, the monthly bill will run $35.32 per 4,000 gallons—a $5.72 average monthly increase. When set alongside sewer rates for 13 nearby cities, including Evansville, Newburgh, Rockport, Dale and Elberfeld, the new sewer rate falls squarely in the middle. Tucker said that he could sleep easier at night knowing the new sewer rate is lower than estimated earlier. Nick Scheller and Nichole Perry were crowned North Posey’s prom The city will borrow roughly $7.5 king and queen on Saturday night. By Pam Robinson The Posey County Alcohol Board voted a unanimous “no” Tuesday and thus denied the license of the Peerless Too Tavern, located at 133 Main Street in Mount Vernon. The three-member board includes President Keith Weidman, Secretary Jackson Higgins and New Harmony resident Ivan Alsop. Recording and witnessing the meeting was Walter Scott Bidwell, a 21-year veteran with the Indiana State Excise Police, the law enforcement division of the Alcohol and Tobacco Commission. Bidwell advised Peerless Too owner Steve Loehr, present for the entire proceeding, that he has the right to appeal the decision through the State of Indiana. In a telephone interview, Bidwell explained that the Posey County Alcohol Board’s action and recommendation would be presented to the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission in Indianapolis the beginning of May. The commission will then weigh in with its vote on the future of Peerless Too. If the commission also votes to deny the tavern its license, Loehr may then appeal its decision within 15 days. Bidwell added that the Peerless Too may remain open during this process. The Peerless Too was deemed to have committed repeated violations that called for the board’s action. Bidwell and the board noted that Loehr had been warned about and cited with violations in past hearings, but that conditions at the tavern had become “worse and worse.” No remonstrators had been present at previous meetings of the board, but prominent community leaders appeared to present evidence that Peerless Too’s operation threatens public safety and presents a public nuisance. Kay Cox and Judy Winiger of the Cox-Winiger Development group, Posey County Prosecutor Travis Clowers, Detective Thomas Rueger of the Mount Vernon Police Department and Mount Vernon Police Chief Grant Beloat. Winiger, Clowers and Rueger testified with prepared statements and supporting documents. Beloat spoke briefly also. A 10-year veteran of the Mount Vernon Police Department assigned to the night shift, Rueger provided the bulk of the scathing evidence. He testified to 52 complaints through dispatch against Peerless Too since January 2010. Rueger stated the complaints did not include cell phone calls from individuals “too scared to identify themselves.” He noted the shooting outside Peerless Too in February 2008, and two stabbing incidents there on January 10 and February 7 this year, when responding officers received cooperation from no one inside. Foot patrol reports broken bottles outside the tavern every night. Rueger testified also that former
