International seminar Practices and New Perspectives in the peruvian and latin american Documentary film from social perspectives to contemporary non-fiction forms

November 14-18, 2016

The “International Seminar: Practices and New Perspectives in the Peruvian and Latin American Documentary Film” aims to foster a platform for gathering and encouraging research on the practices of the Peruvian documentary film, its connections to the Latin American documentary, and the emergence of new perspectives in the production and circulation of the contemporary documentary cinema. From a visual anthropology perspective, it aims to incite a dialogue and discussion on the practices, new perspectives and contributions of the contemporary documentary film, as well as to open a research field around Peruvian documentary on both its historical and contemporary dimensions. Up to now, the role of documentary film as a main object of research within the trajectory of Peruvian cinema has not been appropriately addressed, neither has its importance been recognized as a practice intimately related to the social and cultural contexts of recent Peruvian history. The seminar proposes two main inquiry tracks necessary to account for the tendencies and approaches to documentary production: on one hand, the connections of the Peruvian documentary film, its convergences and differences, with the history and practices of the Latin American Documentary; and on the other hand, the exploration of new practices, aesthetics forms, themes and organizational arrangements that are emerging in the contemporary documentary field, both in the Latin-American and Peruvian mediaspheres.

From this perspective, the seminar is also open to showcase research initiatives and papers dealing with documentary film practices of neighboring countries as well as the possibilities for developing research networks around and by means of documentary practices. Taking into consideration the growing presence of documentary film in both international festivals and local circuits, the seminar aims to foster research on the Peruvian documentary in both its historical connections, comparisons and divergences with the broader context of Latin American documentary cinema, as well as in its distinctive contemporary forms including participative production practices, new formats and interactive platforms, circulation and exhibition frameworks. The seminar encourages researchers, documentary filmmakers, documentary production collectives, artists, cultural programmers and curators to submit lines of debate and discussion about their own production practices, ways of collaboration and participative initiatives, work of documentary collectives, alternative initiatives of documentary circulation and exhibition. In our view, it is paramount to connect the research on documentary film with the contemporary documentary practices that envision new formats and aesthetics that experiment with present-day sensorialities as well as taking into consideration collaborative paradigms, participative modes, new media and interactive documentary forms, and the search for alternative ways of circulation and exhibition of the documentary form. The main three pathways proposed in the seminar are: a historical perspective towards the Peruvian and LatinAmerican documentary cinemas, new forms and themes originating in contemporary documentary film practices, and visual anthropology reflections on the production, organization and diffusion of recent documentary cinema. Considering these main pathways, the seminar suggests the following possible themes and discussion areas. However, these are not exhaustive of all the documentary practices and possible research inquiries. These may be combined or open to other explorations. Possible themes suggested for the seminar are: • • • • • • • • • • •
