LET DISTRACTIONS FALL AWAY

by Madeline Winzer (CNM)

I have been sitting staring at a blank page because I am aware of all the things that surround it. The soft hum of the laptop fan, the footsteps pattering on the pavement below. My sunglasses resting on my head. They form a distraction from what is inside me – what I am to write. I can read books and interview some people, but I will never be able to fully comprehend what it is like to be in certain situations due to nothing more than circumstance. As an army brat, I learnt the importance of adapting to certain situations quickly, which has helped me develop myself in London as a freelancer, where I cater to a range of clients’ needs because I am used to moulding myself to what people need me to be. I am aware of this, and I am also aware of my body – an amazing vessel which has been over the bonnet of a few cars, earned me more money in an hour than most people earn in a month, while on the other side I am aware of its limitations – and that’s the important part. The middle ground that lies between intellect and sensual pleasure, idleness and burnout, having fun and creating meaning. It’s the small patch of orange that is out of our comfort zone that helps us develop ourselves and ultimately our awareness of how fantastic we are as human beings. Our bodies are intelligent to an extent as biologically they are there to protect us from danger. You could say they are aware, but aware of what? Aware the vibe is off because the situation is dangerous or because it is different from what you are used to? It is a hard question to answer so I will talk about a memory that stands out in my mind. “A ship in harbour is safe – but that is not what ships are built for.” – John A. Shedd

When I first moved to London, I was strolling along the beach in Deal after a swim in the sea when I saw a beautiful ketch being restored so I went over to speak to the owner. He told me she was a ketch built in 1907 that was used to transport goods during the First World War. She had a purpose, but after the War, she was set aside on the shore and began

to deteriorate. People didn’t see much potential in her, but one person did, and he invested in her. Jack saw what she could be and raised the money through Lottery funding so she could be restored to full health again so people could rent her and do the one thing she was initially built to do – sail. History is important as it shows us what we are capable of as individuals and as a collective. It’s an outline we are given from the past – the choice is ours of how we play it out in the present. Being aware of ourselves and our habits is important, from the media we consume right through to the skills we have. Skills that can be used to help and inspire others. We are seeing more of the youth of today paying hundreds of pounds for concert tickets to watch a concert through the screen of their phone while picking their next conquest off a dating application like they’re bidding at a meat market. The problem with most people is that they are not aware of their subconscious mind. They still feel money is the marker of success and do not realise their own potential as they want to be a follower at heart. This causes problems as they feel they can’t change and feel mediocre, developing envy for those who create their own success. As humans, we have the ability to be so much more aware of everything including what we already have in our lives. We are marketed with the idea that something more will make us happy, but we are all unique in our own way. What somebody else has or does is so unimportant in the face of what truly drives you, when you really think about it. We are told to chase an ideal which perpetuates the cycle of human inadequacy. We owe it to ourselves to centre ourselves by letting the distractions fall to the sidelines making authenticity be the centrepiece. Only then can we hope to create a life that will actually make us happy – the discovery that we are innately enough – something so unsensational but so important. How will you find out what you want from your life, and what steps will you take to create that life? Become more aware of yourself, and more aware of what is in other people’s heads and hearts by putting away your phone and seeing them, really seeing them. If you do this, you will see the world from the perspective of the shipbuilder and there is real beauty in that.
