STORIES WE TELL
frances ha
Thu 8 AuG | 6pm drink, 6:30pm film Dendy Opera Quays
FRI 9 AUG | 6PM DRINKS, 6:30PM FILM DENDY OPERA QUAYS
opening night | Dir Sarah Polley, Canada, 2012, 108 min Cast Sarah Polley, Michael Polley
Dir Noah Baumbach, USA, 2012, 86 min Cast Greta Gerwig, Mickey SUMNER, Adam Driver
A multi-layered documentary about family, secrets and how we document our own stories.
Frances’ irrepressible charm and awkwardness makes this indie gem a stand out.
In Sarah Polley’s Stories We Tell the Oscarnominated director of Away From Her tells an inspired, genre-twisting story that playfully excavates layers of myth and memory to find the elusive truth at the core of her family. The film unpacks the complex life of Diane, an aspiring actress and mother, and the shockwaves that a series of impulsive actions unleash on her children, husband and community.
Frances (co-writer Greta Gerwig) lives in New York, but doesn’t really have an apartment. Frances is an apprentice at a dance company, but isn’t really a dancer. Frances has a best friend named Sophie (Mickey Sumner), but they aren’t really speaking anymore. Frances throws herself headlong into her dreams, however impractical. She wants so much more than she has, but takes it all in stride, chasing a life full of joy, art and adventure.
This quest to reveal personal family secrets first unfolds like a thriller, blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction, before blossoming into a transcendent meditation on art, truth and storytelling. One of the most heralded films of this year’s festival circuit, Stories We Tell gets at the sweet, complicated, messy heart of what makes a family.
33 years after Manhattan comes a modern comic fable in which Noah Baumbach explores New York, friendship, class, ambition, failure and redemption. As with Lena Dunham’s Girls, the characters are funny, witty and hopeful yet also awkward, foolish and hopeless. Packed with cracking dialogue and wry observations Frances Ha is guaranteed to put a grin on your face.

YOU MAKE ME FEEL SO YOUNG Fri 9 AuG | 6:30pm | Dendy Newtown Australian Premiere | Dir Zach Weintraub, USA, 2013, B&W, 80 min | CasT Zach Weintraub, Justine Eister, Kymberly Walden
The story of a relationship told as a series of intimate and insightful in-between moments. Twenty-something Justine follows her boyfriend Zach to a new city when he gets a job programming an arthouse cinema. Removed from her routine and friends, Justine is left to ponder her newfound idleness which brings her relationship into progressively clearer focus. A series of well chosen, slyly observed moments add up to a quiet and intimate portrait of a young woman on the brink of finding herself. A black and white film about the many shades of grey in any relationship, You Make Me Feel So Young is a delicate drama of layered insights. The precise editing, gorgeous lighting, deliberate composition and sharp sound design combine to create a controlled framework for spontaneous, authentic performances: subtle and exquisite. Official Selection, Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival 2013
“An intimate story that portrays the singularities of a couple and their break-up through exquisite camerawork and great use of sound.” BAFICI 2013 6
BLACKBIRD Sat 10 Aug | 6:30pm | Dendy Opera Quays Sydney Premiere | Dir Jason Buxton, Canada, 2012, 103 min Cast Connor Jessup, Alexia Fast
A powerful riveting drama about violence and prejudices in a small town community. A reckless and essentially empty online threat made to another classmate rapidly escalates into Sean Randall’s worst nightmare when the teenager is arrested and incarcerated at Waterville youth prison for allegedly planning a Columbine-style attack on his school. The struggle to get through his time in prison is only compounded when, despite his attempts to change people’s perceptions, it seems he will be permanently stigmatized by his small town community. Blackbird offers a fresh perspective on dramas about anti-social behaviour, with a gritty representation of the cycle of physical and psychological violence in communities and institutions. Jessup gives an impressive performance as a misunderstood student struggling to express himself and be accepted, but hitting up against systemic prejudices. Best Canadian First Feature Film award, 2012 Toronto International Film Festival
“Blackbird offers a series of subtle revelations that challenge expectation without a hint of soapbox grandstanding or raging primal screams.” Canada.com

A TEACHER
Sat 10 Aug | 6:30pm film, 8pm drink Dendy Newtown
Sat 10 AuG | 8pm drink, 8:30pm film Dendy Newtown
Australian Premiere | Dir Sara St. Onge, Canada, 2013, 90 min | Cast Lola Tash, Charlie Carrick
International Premiere | Dir Hannah Fidell, USA, 2013, 75 min | Cast Lindsay Burdge, Will Brittain
A quirky drama that captures first love in all its complications but none of its clichés
This Sundance hit is a simple but searing snapshot of incompatible love and sexual desire.
At Phoenix Progressive School, where everyone outdoes each other with creative self-expression, Molly would rather hide in her oversized sweaters than risk revealing herself as ordinary. Molly is paralyzed under the weight of her school principal and ultra-liberal parents’ eager expectations. She begins to flourish when her young, handsome English teacher enters the picture and allows her to just be herself. But with each awkward, beautiful step towards an impossible romance, Molly risks alienating everyone she loves.
Diana Watts, a high school teacher in Austin, Texas, is in the midst of a torrid affair with her handsome student Eric. As the reality of their situation forces itself upon them, Diana puts the relationship on hold. It’s only a matter of time before she gives in again to her desire, this time even more recklessly than before.
With striking performances and an excellent soundtrack, Molly Maxwell is an unpredictable, multi-faceted look at a heated issue told through the butterflies-in-stomach, heart-pounding, giddy and crushing experience of first love. Official Selection, Canadian Front Museum of Modern Art, New York
Eschewing the puritanical hysteria that’s accompanied previous American films on this ageold subject, A Teacher is more interested in painting a psychological portrait of female desire. Lindsay Burdge is a revelation as a conflicted woman whose need to be loved consumes her. Charged with emotional tension, this restrained yet powerful film heralds a great new filmmaking talent. Winner Emergent Narrative Woman Director Award, SxSW Film Festival 2013

SUN 11 AUG | 6:30PM | DENDY OPERA QUAYS
Australian Premiere | Dir Nick Bentgen, USA, 2013, 105 min
Sydney Premiere | Dir Adam Leon, USA, 2012, 81 min Cast Tashiana Washington, Ty Hickson, Meeko
A sumptuous observational documentary exploring the American working class experience. Set to the rhythm of annual snowmobile races in Northern Michigan, Northern Light tells captivating stories of recession-era America through the lives of three families. In the face of economic hardship, the great American dream has given way to the last American hope: excelling in a competitive sport. In contrast to the harsh environment, a warm sense of intimacy and community fosters our attachment to these colourful battlers. Without interviews or voice over, Nick Bengten allows us to observe these daily lives and pass our own judgments on rural values, the ravages of late capitalism or the persistent fantasy of fame and fortune. This powerful work of reportage is also a penetrating work of art, served by breathtaking photography and a stirring, tragic score. Special Jury Prize for Innovation, Visions du Réel 2013
Two friends take on New York City in this uplifting, light-hearted urban adventure. Malcolm and Sofia, two teens from the Bronx, are the ultimate graffiti-writers. When a rival gang buffs their latest masterpiece, they hatch a $500 plan to get revenge by tagging an iconic NYC landmark. Trouble is, they don’t have $500. Over two whirlwind, sun-drenched days, Malcolm and Sofia travel the city in search of cash, respect… and each other. Winner of the Grand Jury prize at SxSW, Gimme the Loot is indie filmmaking at its very best. Up-andcoming leads Tashiana Washington and Ty Hickson will charm your sneakers off. Bursting with soul – and not just on the kick-ass soundtrack—this is a raw and refreshing slice of New York summer fun that’ll put a spring in your step. Official Selection, Cannes Film Festival (Un Certain Regard)
“Patient, observant, and deeply generous, Northern Light is a welcome respite from the typical message- “Exhilarating. A fresh, funky jolt of filmmaking joy. based nonfiction.” Fills each frame with raw talent and exuberance.” Hammer To Nail Rolling Stone 8

DIEGO STAR
Sun 11 Aug | 6:30pm | Dendy Newtown
MON 12 AUG | 6:30PM | DENDY OPERA QUAYS
Sydney Premiere | Dir Peter Mettler, Canada/ Switzerland, 2012, 118 min | Cast Richie Hawtin
Australian Premiere | Dir Frédérick Pelletier, Canada/ Belgium, 2013, French with English subtitles, 83 min Cast Issaka Sawadogo, Chloé Bourgeois
Drawing from science, philosophy, religion and the personal, this is a journey into the nature of time. From the particle accelerator in Switzerland, where we seek to probe regions of time we cannot see, to lava flows in Hawaii which have spared a single home on the south side of Big Island; from attempts to halt the decay of inner city Detroit, to a Hindu funeral rite near the place of Buddha’s enlightenment, Peter Mettler’s meditative documentary explores how we perceive time. The act of watching a Mettler film is unique to every viewer. Working at the limits of what can easily be expressed on film, the acclaimed director of Gambling, Gods & LSD invites us to connect the dots with our own lives, our dreams and our experience. Quality of Life Award, Locarno International Film Festival
The compelling tale of an African sailor stranded in Quebec and fighting for what’s right. A Russian cargo ship is stuck on Quebec’s Saint Lawrence River for repairs. When Ivory Coast machinist Traoré speaks out against his employers exploitative practices, he is unjustly accused of causing the damage. Far from home and family, Traoré tries to bond with local single mother Fanny while he fights for justice and the chance to return home. Diego Star is a powerful tale of exploitation and the fight for social justice in a ruthless globalized world. Rich and real performances by rising stars Sawadogo and Bourgeois bring warmth to this slice of windswept social realism. Pelletier proves himself a confident storyteller drawing us into this compelling tale until we recognize the high stakes as our own. Official Selection International Film Festival Rotterdam
“Recalling the work of Terrence Malick, Werner Herzog and the late Chris Marker... The End Of Time becomes immersive and hypnotic, a ravishingly beautiful experience.” The Hollywood Reporter
“The refreshingly unpredictable and urgently topical tale of exploitation and resistance maintains Quebecois cinema’s hot streak.” The Hollywood Reporter 9

WHITE REINDEER
Wed 14 Aug | 5pm drinks reception, 6pm film | Dendy Opera Quays
Thu 15 Aug | 6:30pm | Dendy Opera Quays
SYDNEY PREMIERE | Dir Malcolm Ingram, US-Canada, 2013, 92 min
Sydney Premiere | Dir Zach Clark, US, 2013, 82 min Cast Anna Margaret Hollyman, Laura LemarGoldsborough, Joe Swanberg
Sex, celebrities & civil rights: discover a gay bathhouse will an illustrious history!
A satirical suburban black comedy full of sex, drugs and heart-warming Christmas cheer.
Continental is a riveting examination of a lively and controversial gay club that transcended sexual identity and acted as a beacon to the hip, beautiful and infamous. New York City’s Continental Bathhouse became the keystone of a sexual revolution, fostering an environment of tolerance and a level of mainstream gay acceptance the world had yet to experience.
It’s Christmastime in Virginia and pretty, unassuming 32-year-old real-estate agent Suzanne is doing swell: she just sold a house to a nice polyamorous couple, her weatherman husband Jeff scored a new job in Hawaii and her favourite holiday is quickly approaching. When tragedy strikes however, she goes into a tailspin as her life begins to take new and unexpected directions.
The Continental may have been a place men went to have sex before gay sex was legal, but as a nightspot, it also launched the careers of many, including Better Midler, Barry Manilow, Patti LaBelle and Frankie Knuckles. Through the colourful history of one establishment, Malcolm Ingram (Small Town Gay Bar) tells the story of a generation of outlaws whose legacy lives on today.
While the genre doesn’t often include cokefuelled parties with strippers and orgies with the neighbours, White Reindeer is a moving Christmas movie. Writer-director Zach Clark displays an impressive command of tone, weaving moments of raw tenderness with laugh-out-loud scenes of devious black humour. Embracing Christmas movie clichés while defying audience expectations, this is one of the best American scripts of the year.

THE FRUIT HUNTERS Thu 15th Aug | 6:30pm | Dendy Newtown Australian premiere | Dir Yung Chang, Canada, 2013, 95 min | Cast Bill Pullman
Nature and commerce collide in this thrilling (and mouth-watering) fruit odyssey. “Is it strange that when I look at certain fruit I find myself a bit… aroused?” asks filmmaker Yung Chang at the start of this delicious documentary. By the end of this inspired love letter to fruit, you too may yearn for a mangosteen! The Fruit Hunters follows a group of slightly eccentric foodies (fruities?), including actor Bill Pullman (Independence Day), who travel from Indonesia to Umbria, from Honduras to Hollywood, to seek out (and sometimes save) rare, exuberant and exotic species. A must for foodies, gardeners and anyone interested in sustainability, this intelligent journey by multi-award winner Yung Chang (Up the Yangtze) invites you to look differently at your backyard (and your supermarket shelf) and to seek out the delights of organic, sun-ripened fruit. Official Selection, Berlin International Film Festival 2013
MY AWKWARD SEXUAL ADVENTURE Fri 16th AuG | 6:30pm | Dendy Opera Quays Australian Premiere | Dir Sean Garrity, Canada, 2012, 98 min | Cast Jonas Chernick, Emily Hampshire
Behind the hilariously raunchy façade is a sweet comedy about a belated sexual awakening. Uptight accountant Jordan Abrams proposes to his soul mate Rachel only to be hit with the painful truth: he’s terrible in bed. Newly single and hellbent on getting her back, Jordan embarks on a desperate mission to seek some much-needed sexual experience and acquire new skills, enlisting the guidance of Julia—a sexually liberated but emotionally guarded exotic dancer. Through a hilarious comedy of errors, Julia leads Jordan through an unfamiliar world of strip clubs, massage parlors, cross-dressing and in exchange for his services: advice on her dire financial situation. Funny, sexy and very clever, the film takes the viewer on an adventure that spices up the usual run of the mill romantic comedy tropes. Official Selection, 2012 Toronto International Film Festival

SYDNEY Premiere | Dir Simon Ennis, Canada, 2012, 85 min
INTERNATIONAL Premiere | Dir M Blash, USA, 2013, 96 min Cast Chloë Sevigny, Jena Malone, Josh Hamilton
A wry portrait of geeks, oddballs & visionaries who are obsessed with the Moon.
An original, visually arresting drama with supernatural elements by Portland artist M Blash.
With humour and affection, this entertaining documentary follows a disparate group of dreamers and schemers who have devoted their lives to the Moon. You’ll meet Christopher, who wants to be the first human to leave for the Moon with a one-way ticket, Apollo Astronaut Alan Bean, one of the 12 men to have set foot there, Dennis, who makes a living selling Lunar real estate, and many more.
An enigmatic phone call from a psychic catapults a family into a state of suspended belief while waiting for their recently deceased mother to be resurrected. One sister believes the claim, the other staunchly opposes it until she encounters a chance at love, giving her hope that anything is possible.
A moving, often hilarious portrait of passion, inventiveness and quixotic dreams, Lunarcy! keeps its tongue lodged firmly in cheek. With a deft hand and a light-hearted approach, director Simon Ennis brings everyone in on the joke without mocking his subjects. We have a lot to learn from these dedicated daydreamers who often make a strange kind of sense.
Exploring the altered, de-codified behaviours brought about by grief, M Blash (Cannes 2006’s Lying) finds beauty and redemption in that inbetween space in which we can act out our wildest emotions and briefly redefine ourselves. Oscillating to the electronic sounds of Canadian musician Owen Pallett, The Wait is a cryptic, haunting and strangely cathartic film. Official selection SxSW Film Festival 2013

You’ll get what you paid for with this irreverent look at the humble but mighty VHS! One invention changed the way film was shot, distributed and consumed, brought pornography inside (nearly) every home, threatened theatrical screenings and popularised DIY no-budget cinema. Nope, not the internet: the VHS tape. Who knew the definitive history of the home video revolution would be so hilarious and entertaining? With great insights from VHS enthusiasts such as Mamoru Oshii, Atom Egoyan and Hobo With A Shotgun’s Jason Eisener, as well as key players at Troma, Everything Is Terrible! or Toei Video in Japan, Rewind This! celebrates an endangered cinema and the fearless collectors who keep it alive. Filled with eccentrics, fanatics and more lolz than a week on YouTube, this incredible documentary is a must-see for lovers of trash movies and cinephiles alike. Friends Peter (Richard Benjamin) and John (James Brolin) are stalked by a robotic gunslinger (Yul Brynner) after a malfunction wrecks havoc and androids run amok, spreading terror in the luxury island resort. Directed by the master of the theme-park-gonewrong sub-genre, novelist Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park), Westworld is a smart science fiction thriller and a cracking western rolled into one, not to mention a sly comment on the formulaic nature of Hollywood genre cinema. A moving, quiet drama about legacy, responsibility and human connectedness. Pierre Leduc, professor of literature at a Quebec university, despairs for his students and the world at large. Crushed by this existential burden, he decides to quit his job and abandon material pursuits. When teenager Adèle, the daughter he abandoned before she was born, appears in his life, his attempt to withdraw into isolation is disrupted. A clumsy but touching relationship develops between the two as the reunion revives his will to live and cracks begin to appear in his stony exterior. Pierre’s love of poetry permeates this unique depiction of the power of solitude, and conversely, that of connectedness. It’s a simple philosophical meditation beautifully expressed through the film’s minimalist form and content. Nominated for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor, at the 2013 Canadian Screen Awards.
“Resonates through its minimalist approach to realism, and its universal message about slowing down and getting back to basics in today’s fastpaced, wired-in, and highly materialist society” Cinemablographer
Closing Night/Sydney Premiere | Dir Joe Swanberg, USA, 2013, 90 min | Cast Olivia Wilde, Anna Kendrick, Jake Johnson, Ron Livingston
Cracking chemistry and ace dialogue turns a well-trodden path into a fresh adventure. Luke and Kate work at a Chicago brewery, where they spend their days drinking beer and flirting. The sparks fly, but they’re both taken. Luke and his girlfriend of six years are talking marriage while Kate is playing it cool with her music producer boyfriend Chris. Throw beer into the mix though and who knows what might happen? Four talented actors are given a chance to workshop a sensational script and turn a well-worn romcom premise (can men and women be just friends?) into something fresh, smart and invigorating. With a killer cast and a star turn by the luminous Olivia Wilde, Joe Swanberg takes all he’s learnt making observational no-budget indies and knocks it out of the park.
