EDITORIAL
Happy New Stamp Year! The 2014 stamp year started already on 2 January, when red deer and badger were added to the Wildlife series. The biggest news, however, is probably that the stamps in this definitive stamp series will from now on be issued on self-adhesive paper. This will also apply to any reprints of existing denominations. The reason behind this change is that our postage customers increasingly demand user-friendly, self-adhesive stamps. Commemorative stamps in sheets will continue to be issued on traditional paper. A lot of Norwegians are familiar with the Norwegian Church Abroad. From once serving as a church mainly for sailors, the Norwegian Church Abroad is now a safe harbour for all Norwegians abroad. For its 150th anniversary, the church is
being honoured with its own stamp designed by Stian Hole. The design on the stamp is simple. The waffle heart is an important symbol for the Norwegian Church Abroad, and the heart shape also symbolises the care that the Church represents. Congratulations from Norway Post! When this was being written, the Sochi Olympics had not yet started. Just like many people in Norway, those of us here at Norway Post are excited to see how the Norwegian athletes perform. On the day of the Opening Ceremony, 7 February, four stamps are issued depicting athletes who in particular will be in the spotlight: Marit Bjørgen, Tora Berger, Petter Northug and Aksel Lund Svindal. We are crossing our fingers and hoping that the stamp issue can provide extra motivation on the way to Norwegian gold!
Kind regards,
Halvor Fasting
Director

Starting in 2014, Norwegian definitive stamps will be printed on new paper. To date, the Wildlife in Norway definitive stamps have been issued on traditional paper. Starting in 2014, these stamps will be issued on self-adhesive paper. You will not notice any difference to the stamp sheet. The elements in the margin will also be there in the future. If a previously issued stamp in the Wildlife in Norway series is re-printed, it will be issued on self-adhesive paper only.

THE TALL SHIPS RACES 2014
The Tall Ships Races 2014 The Tall Ships Races are visiting two Norwegian cities this summer, Fredrikstad and Bergen! Straight from Harlingen in the Netherlands around 100 large, fantastic sailing ships will arrive in Fredrikstad on 12 July. The organiser promises that the social and cultural programme will be “an experience of a lifetime” over a period of three days. All of the ships will then sail together to Bergen. This leg is not a competition and therefore should simply be enjoyed – both by the sailors
and the many onlookers along the route. It will be a beautiful sight to behold! The opening in Bergen on 24 July will be spectacular; in addition to the race, Bergen’s great pride, “Statsraad Lehmkuhl”, will be celebrating its centennial. This anniversary will naturally be celebrated with fanfare – with the ship holding the place of honour at the Bergen harbour. The event in Bergen will be a city-
wide festival and is expected to draw half a million visitors! After visiting Bergen, the ships will set sail on 27 July for Esbjerg, Denmark. Norway Post will be on location in both Fredrikstad and Bergen. Personalised stamps will be made for 150 days in advance, 100 days in advance and the opening day, as well as cancellations and “golden envelopes”.
The first stamps for 150 days in advance are available for order using the attached form!

Peace of Kiel Bicentennial
The Treaty of Kiel was signed on 14 January 1814 between the King of Sweden and the King of Denmark. The Danish King Frederik VI, and all of his descendants, surrendered the kingdom of Norway, with the exception of Iceland, Faroe Islands and Greenland. Norway, as its own kingdom, would be united with Sweden. In return, Denmark received Swedish Pomerania and R端gen and 1 million Riksdaler. When word of the Treaty of Kiel reached Norway at the end of January 1814, it sparked the Norwegian independence movement. The rebellion resulted in the constitu-

tion signed on 17 May and the election of the Danish prince Christian Frederik to King of Norway. Not long thereafter Swedish troops attacked Norway, and following the Convention of Moss, signed on 14 August 1814, Norway approved the union with Sweden. Norway Post is celebrating the bicentennial of the Peace of Kiel with a ready franked postcard. Norway Post was also on location at the bicentennial celebration in Kiel on 14 January with a personalised stamp and a cancelled exhibition card. SOURCE: STORE NORSKE LEKSIKON; SNL.NO
