The Arctic University Museum of Norway in Tromsø is turning 150. It is Northern Norway’s oldest scientific institution, and since 1872 it has contributed with insight into Northern Norway’s natural and cultural history, society and life, as well as knowledge about famous personalities from the north. For the anniversary, a miniature sheet is being issued with two stamps depicting both the coast and inland in the museum’s large catchment area. Martin Mörck is the artist behind the miniature sheet and the engraved stamps.
The Research, Innovation, Technology series is being issued this year for the third time. The themes are Equinor’s wind power initiative Hywind Tampen and Stingray’s laser removal of salmon lice. By scanning the QR code on the stamps, you will be directed to the Research Council of Norway’s website, where both the technology and the backstory are explained. Enzo Finger created the stamps in this series.
Perhaps the year’s biggest stamp anniversary is the 150th anniversary of the posthorn stamps. The posthorn stamp motif is the oldest in the world still in use. In total, more than 5 billion posthorn stamps have been issued in Norway. Enzo Finger is also responsible for the beautiful miniature sheet for this anniversary.
1 October is National Stamp Day. As usual, a number of stamp clubs will have their own activities and cancellations on this day.

On the miniature sheet, the museum’s different areas of focus are illustrated by whales (oceanography and zoology), Northern Lights (astronomy), Arctic poppy (botany) and the museum’s golden axe (archaeology).
The background is a map of the area the museum represents. The country name and text are in Norwegian, North Sami and Kven languages.

SVARTSKOG: For the birthday itself on 16 July, Norway Post, in collaboration with the museum, created its own envelope depicting Amundsen’s house Uranienborg in Svartskog near Bunnefjorden. The motif in the cancellation is the emblem from Amundsen’s dining room chairs at Uranienborg.
