ome renovation projects are done for several different reasons, whether to update styles, repair damaged or broken items or to achieve more living space.

More than ever before, homeowners are choosing improvement projects geared toward making their homes healthier.

The World Health Organizations says inadequate housing conditions, such as poor ventilation, radon, urban pollution, and moisture issues, can contribute to many preventable diseases and injuries — especially respiratory problems, nervous system disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Furthermore, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ranks indoor air quality as a top

five environmental risk to public health. EPA studies have found that indoor air pollution levels were roughly two to five times greater than outdoor pollution levels.

People interested in making their homes healthier can embrace these renovations and lifestyle changes.

• Be aware of furniture materials.

Toxic PBDEs, which are chemicals used as flame retardants on furniture fabrics produced prior to 2006, can send toxins into the air. Some manufacturers may still use these flame retardants in new forms, but with similar risks. Before purchasing furniture, ask if a product is treated, and select naturally fire-resistant materials like wool and cotton.

• Lighten up.

Lighting is often underappreciated but can have a dramatic impact on whether a home feels inviting, warm and/or uplifting. Experiment with different types of bulbs and lighting fixtures to turn drab and dreary environments into brighter places. Lighting may improve mood and productivity.

• Let the sun shine in.

Modify window treatments to let more sunlight into the house. There is evidence that the sun, particularly UV light, is a potent bactericide. The Sunlight Institute advises that there’s no harm in letting natural sunlight do its work, as bacteria within eight feet of low-intensity UV light can be killed in 10 minutes.

• Inspect and service wood-burning appliances.

A study published in

the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology has found regular inhalation of wood smoke limits immune activity and function, and anyone who burns wood indoors should be aware of these potential health risks.

Ensuring proper ventilation of smoke and routinely cleaning the chimney can help cut down on particulate matter.

• Turn to nontoxic cleaning products, pesticides

and insecticides.

Always opt for nontoxic, natural products when cleaning in and around the house.

• Declutter the home.

A cluttered, hectic space can affect emotions and mental state, never mind attracting dust and making a home harder to clean.

Saskatchewan adopts National Building Energy Code

askatchewan has upgraded its home building status to code green.

On Jan. 1, 2018, Saskatchewan adopted the National Building Code 2015, which sets out technical provisions for the design and construction of new buildings. As of Jan. 1, 2019, the province has begun enforcing Section 9.36 of the code which deals with enhanced energy efficiency measures in home building.

According to Jason Christbason, Builder Relations Coordinator with the Regina & Region Home Builders’ Association (RRHBA), the result of this new code will be better homes being constructed for people in Saskatchewan.

“The new energy code is going to ensure that the homes builders construct today are more energy efficient than the homes they would have constructed even three years ago,” he said. “This results in a healthier home and

it also passes savings along to the homeowner because of the energy being saved.

“These energy efficiency requirements start from the beginning and go all the way to the top, whether you’re a new home buyer or retiring and building your dream house.”

As Christbason explained, the code raises the bar when it comes to sealing the building envelope. The energy code sets new minimum standards for areas of the home including windows, doors, insulation, lighting and some appliances.

“When you examine higher efficiency windows, for example, being in Saskatchewan we have a lot of sunshine that is actually heating your home,” Christbason said. “When your house is more energy efficient, it captures that natural heat and keeps that natural heat so your furnace doesn’t have to be running at a hard rate.

“It’s the same scenario with doors. In an older home

from the 1950s or ‘60s, you can put your hands around the door and feel the draft.

The new energy codes calls for sealants that will ensure you don’t have cold air coming into your home and you won’t have to worry about the warm air you’re paying for in the winter escaping.”

A new code means that there are new sets of rules for homebuilders in Saskatchewan to learn. Christbason said there are plenty of resources out there to help home builders become acclimatized.

“The RRHBA and the province hold workshops to go through the code and ensure builders are clear on the requirements,” Christbason said. “There’s nothing really that drastic for home builders to adapt to in the sense that they’re not building walls in a different way to attach to houses. They’re just tightening that building envelope so the home is more energy efficient.”

Seeing as the National

Building Code dates back to 2015, the process of Saskatchewan adopting Section 9.36 clearly didn’t happen overnight. Saskatchewan was, in fact, the last province to adopt the section. Christbason said this is because the province was doing its due diligence, not delaying the process. Since the code is based on climate zones, rather than provincial borders, he said there were many factors that had to be taken into account.

“A home in Saskatchewan will be rated differently than a home in British Columbia or Ontario because of the different climate zones. It’s very cold here,” Christbason said with a laugh. “The adoption in our province was delayed because we had to go through a review process to ensure that these minimum standards are reflecting our climate zone.

“We had to focus on finding the best way to control homes so warm air stays inside during the freezing

winter weather and cold air stays inside during the summer heat waves. It’s also important to consider that this is an illustrated code book with just under 600 pages of information. It’s not just a 60-page document that you can review quickly.”

When the next building energy code is released, Christbason predicted that it will once again take Saskatchewan a considerable time to adopt it as it carefully considers the factors surrounding its climate zone.

He also said that further changes will help bring energy efficient home building to “another level.”

“The industry is always going to move forward,” he said. “We’re going to continue to move forward to Net Zero, which is really about taking homes off the grid. Just like a car company always focuses on making more fuel efficient cars, we’re always focused on making more energy efficient homes.”

Simple ways to prevent dog-related lawn damage

D

ogs love spending time outdoors. Dog owners with yards know that dogs benefit greatly from some exercise in the backyard. While that time might be great for dogs, it can take its toll on lawns.

Dog urine and feces can adversely affect the look and health of a lush green lawn. Nitrogen is essential to healthy soil, but only at certain levels. When those levels are exceeded, the result can be lawn damage. According to The Spruce Pets, an advisory site that offers practical tips and training advices to pet owners, this is what happens when pets frequently urinate on grass. Urine is naturally high in nitrogen, so when pets urinate on lawns, the grass might turn yellow or brown due to the excess nitrogen content. Nitrogen also is present in lawn fertilizers, further exacerbating the problem for pet owners who fertilize their lawns.

In addition to urine damage, dogs can trample frosted grass, contributing to problems that may not become evident until spring, and get into areas like gardens where they wreak additional havoc.

Pet owners who want to let their dogs run free in the yard but don’t want damaged grass may be tempt-

ed to put their pooches in diapers or confine them to crates when letting them outside. But such an approach isn’t necessary. In fact, some simple strategies can be highly effective at preventing dog-related lawn damage.

• Speak with a landscaper about planting new grass.

Certain types of grass, such as Bermuda grass, can withstand dog damage better than others. Local climate

will dictate which types of grass are likely to thrive in a given area, so speak with a professional landscaper about the viability of planting new grass.

• Install fencing. Pet owners with expansive yards can install fencing that allows dogs to spend time exercising outdoors without granting them access to the entire property. Large dogs will need more room than small ones, but try to build

fenced-in areas that allow dogs to run freely and get the exercise they need to stay healthy.

• Work with a dog trainer. Dog trainers might be able to work with dogs so they only urinate in certain areas of the yard, greatly reducing the damage they can cause to a lawn. Trainers also might help curb digging and clawing behaviours that can damage lawns as well as gardens.

• Consider hardscaping.

Hardscaping might be most effective for pet owners with small properties. Hardscaping does not include grass and can add visual appeal to a property while saving pet owners the headaches of dealing with dog-related lawn damage.

Greenhouses require ample time to maintain. Greenhouses are not self-managing; they require heat, water, venting, electricity, and maintenance on the part of gardeners. Individuals need to determine how much time they have to devote to a greenhouse and then consider their options.

Start by choosing the size of the greenhouse. Many experts, like those at the home and garden information site The Spruce, suggest getting the largest one you can afford and fit into the yard. It is much easier to fill a large greenhouse than try to expand on a small one later on.
