What has millions of sparkling lights, countless photo ops, and one giant feeling of holiday spirit?

It’s Glow Gardens. This wonderful Christmas festival is expanding to include Saskatoon for the 2019 season, and we are ready for it!

Interactive playgrounds, light gardens and illuminated play structures will capture the imaginations of young and old alike, while the live entertainment and seasonal beverages beckon from the licensed bar. Glow shines light on the magic of Christmas in a cozy venue and has events and attractions for each day of the schedule.

Founded in 2017, this has quickly grown to be the world’s largest indoor Christmas festival with locations in Canada, the US and Holland. Glow has welcomed 1.6 million guests to its Christmas markets; that is a lot of holiday spirit!

“We chose Saskatoon because we thought it would be a great location for Glow Gardens in the prairie provinces,” says Shannon VanNorman, Glow Gardens’ prairie general manager. “We are really excited to expand and bring this experience to more locations.”

So, lights and festive spirit aside, what is there to do at Glow Gardens? First, definitely plan to spend a while or make a few trips — this

event is completely indoors and is spread throughout 75,000 square feet of space at Prairieland Park’s World Trade Centre.

Santa’s Lost Presents is a handsdown hit with the little ones as they explore lighted trails and help the elves find lost gifts. If they discover all the lost presents they get a surprise. Food is an important part of the holidays. The season is full of special tastes and smells, from big meals with mounds of sweets, to leaving milk and cookies out on Christmas Eve. However, most of these happen without an appearance from Santa, as he’s busy getting ready for the big day. That’s where Snackin’ with Santa comes in, an event which gives children the chance to have lunch, and spend some quality time, with the jolly old elf himself.

ator t off Snackin’ S ki ’ with Santa. As a mother of two young girls, she was searching for children’s Christmas activities that included a visit from Santa.

“I was disappointed by the lack of options,” says Kendel, “and thought there should be more, easily accessible, events.”

She started to brainstorm ideas and ran them past co-founder Tawny Bley who she knew from their time together on committees and through volunteer work. Together, they drew up plans for Snackin’ with Santa and launched their event in 2018.

The response was overwhelming

as they received enormous amounts of positive feedback, including from local community leaders. Now in its second year, Snackin’ with Santa is back and excited to have Canseed Ltd. return as a title sponsor, as well as to have the support of several other local Saskatoon-owned business.

“We’re so thankful to the community for their support,” says Kendel, “as they make Snackin’ with Santa possible.”

This year’s event will be held at TCU Place on November 30, between 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., with tickets costing $22.50 for all attendees ages one year and older. Activities include face painting by Kreative Mum, Princesses and Superheroes sponsored by Kings Castle, as well as a station where kids can write their letter to Santa.

dogs, chicken fingers, fries, veggies, cookies, and juice. Of course, the highlight of the event will be an appearance by Santa himself! He will be available for pictures and to hear what each child wants for Christmas.

Santa will also have a special gift for every boy and girl who visits him.

Snackin’ with Santa is more than just a good time. The event also serves as a fundraiser, with all proceeds from ticket sales going to support Ronald McDonald House in Saskatoon. This

is a charity that is near and dear to Santa himself as Ronald McDonald House focuses on giving aid to families who are in Saskatoon while their children are receiving medical treatment. As a result, the partnership is a perfect fit, and a great way to give back during the holiday season.

EXPERIENCE CHRISTMAS PAST AND PRESENT AT

THE BARN PLAYHOUSE

There are settings that cause us to recall happy memories. It might be familiar smells, the sounds of loved ones, or a special location but these things often make us smile and bring warmth to our lives. For many people, Christmas traditions trigger these feelings, which is why a trip to the Barn Playhouse continues to be an important part of countless holiday celebrations.

This year, as part of their annual Christmas Dinner Theater, they are proud to present Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The decision to stage a performance of this iconic story was partly based in the importance it has to the Dyck family, owners and operators of the Barn Playhouse.

“My sisters and I grew up watching Alastair Sims’ performance as Scrooge every December 24th,” says Vicki Dyck, artistic director, “so ‘A Christmas Carol’ is Christmas to our family.”

However, the connections go further and deeper than family tradition.

During her time as a drama teacher at Rosthern Junior College, Dyck’s first production was of A Christmas Carol using only high school students.

As she watched them perform, Dyck recalls thinking, “I hope I get the chance to direct this show again when the teenage boy playing Ebenezer Scrooge is truly the right age for the part.” This Christmas that wish will be fulfilled, as 38 years later the same young man will reprise his role as Scrooge.

Beyond the play’s personal import-

ance, the Barn Playhouse also chose this story for the lasting impact it has on audiences. The ability of the play to ask penetrating questions about who we are, our past, and what our future might hold, has inspired onlookers to take stock of their own lives while offering an uplifting final message.

“When Scrooge changes, he does so with the most joyful exuberance,” says Dyck, “It is a celebration of life and the idea that it is never too late to make that change.”

GET CRAFTY FOR CHRISTMAS AT SOUL PAPER

Nothing expresses love quite like a handcrafted gift— which is why Soul Paper on 20th Street is offering several unique gift-crafting workshops in the lead-up to Christmas.

Mixed-media artist Heidi Guenther will teach a workshop on Nov. 22 on making Christmas gift tags featuring the gift-giver’s own handwriting, watercolour paints, and stencils.

“These tags are so beautiful, Heidi once framed one and gave it as the gift rather than putting it on the gift,” says Soul Paper manager and owner Susan Gallagher.

Crafters can learn Pointed Pen Calligraphy on November 29. This is an introductory calligraphy class using a nibbed straight pen and sumi ink.

Participants will leave with their project plus supplies and work sheets.

Soul Paper will host an all-day Christmas event on Nov. 30. Featured throughout the day will be demonstrations in watercolour work, mixed media art, calligraphy and bullet journaling.

“Bullet journaling involves creating an index at the front of one’s journal where references to a specific topic can be noted,” Gallagher explains.

“For instance, if you’re going on a hol-

iday and write about it on pages 5, 7 and 12 of your journal, the references can be noted under the ‘Holiday’ heading in the front page index.”

The event will introduce another form of journaling which involves customizing blank journal pages relevant to the person’s needs and interests. This might include daily habit tracking, goal setting, meal planning and the like.

Another demonstration sure to be a hit is the Quick Alcohol Ink Project which applies alcohol-based ink to a non-porous surface like glass, metal, or glossy yupo paper. Gallagher will demonstrate the technique on a Christmas ornament.

Soul Paper’s event on Nov. 30 will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Demonstration times will be posted on social media and the business’s website (Soulpaper.ca).

Those attending can fill out a personal wish list and receive a coupon to make shopping easy for their gift giver.

Gallagher says watercolours rate high in customer interest this Christmas season, particularly the single-pigment paint line, Stoneground Paint, which is produced in Saskatchewan. The paints come in dozens of gorgeous colours.

Calligraphy is also very popular, whether brush calligraphy, pointed pen calligraphy, or letter writing.

“I think the reason people are attracted to this is because a person’s handwriting is so personal,” Gallagher observes. “It’s recognizable. It’s like you’re present with the person.”

Soul Paper carries an extensive line of pens, inks, papers, stamps and seals.

Looking for gift ideas for kids? Soul Paper has a whole section stocked with possibilities including colouring rolls and the Kid’s Book of Paper Love which offers paper crafts, stickers, paper dolls and pages to colour.

Among them you’ll find crepe paper packs in stunningly gorgeous colours for flower-making, letter writing materials and ‘everything journal’. SOUL PAPER ALSO OFFERS GIFT-WRAPPING SERVICE On November 15, mixed-media artist Heidi Guenther will demonstrate how to use acrylic paints, stencils, spray inks and collage techniques to create a painting that can be given as a gift. Supplies are included in the class fee.

On Sunday, Nov. 17, local paper artist Ba-Hung Tran will teach a workshop in the folded paper art of origami. Crafters will learn to make an origami floral or a Saskatchewan-themed animal. Tran is a Saskatchewan Craft Council artist whose signature line of origami earrings are sold in Soul Paper.

Wild Blueberry and Juniper Butter Tarts

TO MAKE:

These flakey morsels have all the classic Canadian butter tart flavour but feature wild northern blueberries and juniper from Boreal Heartland in La Ronge and Awazibi maple syrup from Canada’s only Indigenous owned and operated Maple Syrup company. From the first Saturday in December, these gems will be included in Wanuskewin Restaurant’s holiday baking trays.

FOR THE FILLING

2 cups 1/4 cup 1 tbsp.

6 1 cup 2 1/2 cup

wild blueberries, frozen or fresh maple syrup oil juniper berries, crushed brown sugar eggs unsalted butter

FOR THE PASTRY

2.5 cups 1 cup 1/2 tsp.

1/4 to 1/3 cup

all purpose flour lard or shortening salt cold water

Mix flour and salt in a bowl. Add chunks of lard and work with fingertips until nicely blended, with only lentil sized pieces of lard remaining. Add just enough water so pastry forms into a ball. Roll out 1/4 inch think and cut with a 4-inch circle cutter.

Gently toss blueberries with maple syrup, oil and crushed juniper berries. Roast on a parchment covered baking sheet at 300 F for 30 minutes, stirring halfway through. Let cool thoroughly, then refrigerate overnight. You’ve turned blueberries into a kind of raisin!

Whisk eggs with melted butter and brown sugar. Add blueberries with all their liquid. Place dough circles into muffin tins and fill with one tablespoon of the blueberry mixture. These are rustic and don’t need to be crimped at the edges.

Bake at 350 F for 35 minutes, until filling has set and shells are golden brown. Slide a butter knife around the edge of each tart to loosen and lift out with a fork. Enjoy with a cup of muskeg tea!

Important note: Juniper berries shouldn’t be eaten by pregnant or nursing mothers. The amount in the recipe is very small, but an abundance of caution is always wise when cooking with foraged ingredients.

Slice thinly with the grain. Add to heavy bottom pot with wine and vinegar. Cook gently until soft.

Season with salt and pepper.

Place a generous amount of cabbage on a plate. Lay meatballs on top. Pour sauce over meatballs.

Of course, anyone who has attended a Christmas dinner theatre at the Barn Playhouse knows that the entire experience is magical. From the moment they drive into the farmyard, visitors are transported back in time to a nostalgic Christmas past. Whether it’s twinkling lights, the horse-drawn wagon ride from the parking lot, or the jingle of sleigh bells there is something there to put a smile on every face.

Once they enter the 100-year-old barn, guests can browse the crafts, enjoy the complimentary punch, or simply view the Christmas decorations.

POMEGRANATE HONEY BUTTER SYRUP

125ml honey ORANGE AND ROSEMARY CREPES

425ml whole milk 200g flour 20g

sugar

butter, melted, plus extra for frying crepes

zest of 1 orange 2.5ml chopped fresh rosemary In a blender, combine the milk, flour, sugar and salt, blend until smooth. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the eggs and egg yolks.

Whisk in the milk-flour mixture, and then continue to whisk in the remaining ingredients. Cover and let rest in the fridge for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.

Once rested, heat an 8-inch non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat, brush with a little bit of the extra butter then pour a scant 1/4 cup of crepe batter into the pan. Quickly tilt pan in a circular motion to distribute batter evenly oven pan before it sets. When golden brown and easily releases from the pan (only about 30 seconds), flip and cook another 30 seconds. Transfer to a cookie sheet to cool. Repeat with remaining batter, buttering pan each time, until all batter is used up.

Spread crepes evenly on the cookie sheet, wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to use. (Crepes can be made the day before).

80ml 100% pure pomegranate juice 50g

cold butter, cubed

In a small pot, combine the honey and pomegranate juice and allow to simmer until slightly thickened and syrup-like consistency. Once slightly thickened, whisk in the while, cold, cubed butter a few cubes at a time. Turn off heat and allow to sit until ready to serve.

TO ASSEMBLE YOU’LL NEED:

butter for heating crepes fresh pomegranate seeds peeled and sliced oranges whipped cream When ready to serve, fold each crepe into quarters. Heat a frying pan over medium heat with butter.

Add the folded crepes, four at a time, to quickly heat them through.

Transfer to plates. Drizzle with the pomegranate & honey butter syrup, whipped cream, sliced oranges and pomegranate seeds.
