Are poinsettias poisonous?

C

hristmas trees, Santa Claus, menorahs, and glittering lighting displays are just a few of the many prominent symbols of the holiday season. And while mistletoe might garner more attention and inspire more displays of affection, poinsettias are another prominent sign that the holiday season has arrived.

Thanks to its bright red and green colors, the poinsettia is perhaps the ideal holiday plant. But as much as it suits holiday decor, the poinsettia has a reputation that few plants would want.

First discovered in Mexico and brought to the United States by Dr. Joel Poinsett, the poinsettia has long been rumoured to be poisonous. However, the National Capital Poison Center notes that poinsettias are not deadly. In fact, the NCPC notes that the rumour that poinsettias are deadly may

have been around for more than a century, tracing its origins all the way back to a child who was found dead lying next to a poinsettia plant. The plant was blamed for the child’s death, and even

though that blame was misplaced, the stigma stuck. WebMD notes that others trace the false rumours surrounding poinsettias to 1919, when parents blamed the death of their daughter, who they thought

had eaten poinsettia leaves, on this ubiquitous holiday plant.

Even today, when researchers have long since proven that poinsettias are not deadly, many people still believe they can be fatal if consumed.

The NCPC notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact.

While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that. (MNS)

Ten Regina families realize dream of home ownership

T

he Government of Canada, the Government of Saskatchewan and Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) have partnered to help 10 Regina families realize their dream of owning a safe, quality home. The units are part of Haultain Crossing, Habitat’s multi-unit family housing development which will house a total of 62 Habitat partner families upon completion.

Located at 1033 Edgar Street, Haultain Crossing will contain 62 townhouse-style condominiums upon completion. Together, the main and upper floors of each home will total 1,216 square feet. Homes assigned to larger families will have a partially finished basement. This is the second phase of development at Haultain Crossing. Fourteen families took possession of their Haultain Crossing homes in 2016, upon completion of the project’s first phase.

“We are very excited to welcome these 10 new families into their new homes and to announce that we have officially reached the halfway completion point for the largest Habitat development in Saskatchewan. Affordable homeownership is a life-changing experience for our families. Thanks to the donors, supporters, volunteers and families, we are able to provide a hand up to local low-income families through safe, decent and affordable homeownership,” said Kelly Holmes-Binns, Chief Executive Officer, Habitat for Humanity Regina.

The Government of Canada, through Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation (CMHC), along with the Government of Saskatchewan, through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), jointly contributed $400,000 toward the project under the Canada-Saskatchewan Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement.

“There’s a great deal of work and cooperation that takes place during Habitat for Humanity builds. Our Government is proud to partner in initiatives that increase housing supply and help bolster local economies.

they can proudly call their own,” said federal Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Minister Ralph Goodale.

Saskatchewan Minister of Social Services and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Paul Merriman added, “The Haultain Crossing project is very meaningful to all the Habitat families involved, its partners, supporters, volunteers and the Eastview community. Our government is committed to providing affordable homeownership in the province through support of Habitat’s program. We will always stand with the people of Saskatchewan and stand firm on issues that matter, including housing.”

Regina mayor Michael Fougere commented, “The addition of ten new homes to the Haultain Crossing Project is evidence of the remarkable vision and planning of Habitat for Humanity. These affordable homes are bringing new life to the neighbourhood and creating pride and hope for the future in these homeowners. I am very proud of the City’s long-term support of Habitat for Humanity, which Includes $150,000 in support for this phase of the project.”

Private sponsors also contributed to the construction and completion of

the first ten units at Haultain Crossing, including Farm Credit Canada (FCC), Town and Country Plumbing and Heating, and The Mosaic Company.

The Mosaic Company (Mosaic) directed $50,000 towards the purchase of materials for one unit that Habitat and the Trade and Skills Construction Apprenticeship Program (TASCAP) partnered together on. This partnership engages and trains high school students during the construction of some Haultain Crossing units.

TASCAP is real life education for students who are on site daily for an entire semester during the construction of the home. Qualified instructors lead students through the build from the foundation up. Students earn high school credits through the program in addition to apprenticeship hours they can apply against future trades training.

Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home or other Habitat homes. The family purchases their home at fair market value, paying an interest-free, zero down-payment mortgage set at 25 per cent of their annual gross income. Upon completion, the affordable no-interest mortgage is provid-

ed by Habitat to partner families with mortgage payments going back for future builds.

The Government of Canada is currently rolling out its National Housing Strategy (NHS), an ambitious 10year, $40 billion plan that will create 100,000 new housing units and lift 530,000 families out of housing need, as well as repair and renew more than 300,000 housing units and reduce chronic homelessness by 50 percent.

The NHS is built on strong partnerships between federal, provincial and territorial governments, and on continuous engagement with others, including municipalities, Indigenous governments and organizations, and the social and private sectors.

The Province’s overall commitment to Habitat totals $10.85 million since March 2009. This total includes $1 million announced with the 2018-2019 provincial budget, with funding from the Canada-Saskatchewan Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement.

This investment also supports Saskatchewan’s Housing Strategy and Poverty Reduction Strategy goal of ensuring Saskatchewan people have access to affordable, safe, secure and stable housing. (CNW)

Simple strategies to stage your home S

taging has long been part of selling a home, and for good reason. When selling a home, it makes sense for sellers to make their homes as appealing as possible, even if a recent study indicates that staging may not compel buyers to offer more money.

Researchers at Old Dominion University and Johns Hopkins University found that staging did not have a significant effect on the actual revealed market value of a property. However, homeowners should not interpret that as a reason to skip staging. In fact, the study’s authors note that staging gave buyers more favourable impressions of a property, which might accelerate the selling process.

Staging a home need not be difficult. In fact, homeowners can employ several simple and inexpensive staging strategies to entice buyers to make offers on their homes.

• Clear out the clutter, especially in bathrooms and closets. Clear out the clutter in each room in the house before hosting an open house. Note that it’s not just bedrooms and living rooms that should be made to look open, spacious and clutter-free. A luxurious, hotel-quality bathroom that’s open and airy can impress buyers, as can organized closets that are not jam packed with clothing, shoes and other wardrobe items that have a tendency to take over closets the longer someone lives in a home.

• Let the sun shine in. A home that’s bright and airy tends to appear more spacious and livable than one in which the windows and blinds are closed.

• Start right inside the front door.

A welcoming, clutter-free foyer or primary entryway makes a strong first impression, immediately giving buyers an idea of what it will be like to welcome their own friends and family into a home should they buy it. If you hang your coats on a coat rack in a foyer or entryway that does not have a closet, remove the coat rack before

hosting an open house. Coat racks can make the space feel cramped. If there’s room, place a small table and bench just inside the door.

• Take care of the yard. You only get one chance to make a first impression, and the first thing buyers will see when they pull up outside your house is the exterior of your home. Landscaping is important, and a well-maintained yard suggests to buyers that owners have taken pride

in their homes, and that may extend inside the home. Make sure the grass is freshly cut, shrubs and trees have been trimmed, bald spots in the lawn have been addressed, and exterior living spaces have been cleaned and cleared of clutter.

Staging a home sounds complicated. But there are various simple and inexpensive ways to make a home more attractive to prospective buyers.

he fun, festive activities during the holiday season make it a favourite time of year for many people.

At the risk of sounding like a Grinch, though, all that festivity can lead to unintentional safety hazards. For example, some 30 per cent of all home fires and 38 per cent of home fire deaths occur over December, January and February, reports the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI).

Fortunately, awareness is half the battle. As you enjoy the holidays this year, think about best practices for keeping you and your family safer.

1. Don’t let the holidays zap your energy. Not to shock you, but it’s crucial to keep your hands dry (and avoid standing in water) when touching decorations, gifts or other gadgets powered by electricity. You should install ground-fault circuit interrupters anywhere inside or outside water and electricity may come in contact.

2. Sleep tight, but electronics-free.

Lying down for a long winter’s nap?

Stash cordless and corded appliances elsewhere to rule out overheating. A hot phone under a sack of feathers could spell disaster.

3. Install tamper-resistant receptacles. These electric outlets feature internal shutters that keep curious children from inserting objects.

4. Unplug before you turn in. Space heaters come in handy for banishing winter chill, but they can overheat, spark, tip over and/or ignite combustibles such as wadded-up gift wrap if not used correctly. Turn them off when you leave the room or go to sleep.

6. Upgrade your wiring. The best gift for your family is to upgrade to Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter break-

ers or outlets. This smart technology temporarily disables circuits when detecting potentially dangerous electric leaks. It’s estimated that half of electrical fires that occur every year could be prevented by AFCIs. All upgrades should be completed by a qualified electrician.

7. Avoid getting frazzled. Worn-

cord warning: Avoid pinching electric cords between windows, rugs, carpets or furniture, since that can wear them down and possibly cause overheating and ignition.

8. Even outlets experience holiday stress. Multi-outlet power strips and extension cords are handy for decorations, phones, cooking gear and new gift gadgetry, but plugging in too many things can over-tax your home’s electrical capacity. Never use an extension cord or power strip for heaters, as this could cause cords to overheat and result in a fire.

9. Decorate wisely. Consider fire hazards before draping that garland over a fireplace mantle, plugging in the frayed cord that lights up your vintage Santa or arranging pine wreaths around your candles. Check decorations for safety listing labels and never connect more than three strings of lights.

10. Give lit decorations a break. Reduce the likelihood of fire by simply shutting everything off when there’s no one home (or awake) to enjoy them. Half of home fire deaths occur between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., reports the NFPA. 11. Be busy as an elf about damage control. When decorating, check for loose or bare wires, cracked or damaged sockets, wobbly connections, broken or sharp edges and other hazards.

12. More Christmas tree, more water. If you put up a real tree, make sure you water it daily. A dried-up pine tree is nothing but kindling. And an unfortunate 260 home fires in the U.S. start with Christmas trees each year, on average. (BPT)

Create a cozy home with hygge

W

ant to make your home as cozy, calm and relaxing as possible? Try hygge (pronounced: hue-gah), a Danish lifestyle trend that has captured the imagination of lighting and interior designers, as well as homeowners. More than just a décor trend, hygge is a state of mind – one of cozy contentment while appreciating the simple things that bring joy to your life.

According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), lighting is a key element in hygge, which takes a minimalist concept and punctuates it with warmth, texture and glow. One of the most effective ways to create a warm and cozy atmosphere is by the placement and adjustment of lighting in the home.

The gentle glow of candles, which symbolizes the hygge trend, is complemented by soft, mood-provoking electric lighting. With hygge, interiors are lit to create a pleasant ambiance.

Light and shadow are equally important elements, as they contribute to a feeling of warmth and naturalness.

“Lighting is a critical element for a hygge atmosphere,” says Tim Stumm, creative director for Z-Lite.

“Of course, there is the warm glow of candles, but make sure you incorporate the proper lighting design using

Kelvin temperatures 2400K to 2700K. These temperatures are best to create intimate, calm and the most soothing lighting possible.”

Using several light sources that scatter warm light throughout a space is the best way to create hygge. Table and floor lamps, wall sconces, and pendant lights provide light as well as a soothing and inviting feel, giving plenty of options for different moods and settings.

Transform space with shadow and light by placing lamps in spots chosen to highlight a room’s decorative elements. Adding a few softly lit pendant lights brings a serene, diffused glow that creates areas of darkness as well as light, increasing the sense of tranquility. Something that won’t be found in hygge décor is harsh overhead lighting. To quote the Swedish fashion and lifestyle Youtuber Jenny Mustard: “Ceiling lighting is where hygge goes to die.”

To add a comfy, hygge-worthy glow to your home, follow these lighting tips: • Limit the use of ceiling lights. If overhead lighting can’t be replaced with lamps, install a dimmer on the ceiling light to make the room glow with warm, low light.

• Select light bulbs with a low lu-

men number that are warm white or soft white in color. A bulb’s lumen number determines how bright it is.

The higher the lumen number, the brighter the bulb. Try for a comfortable brightness that still gives good visibility.

• Use LED candles for a pleasant flickering glow. It is always wonderful to walk through rooms lit by the magical radiance of candlelight.

• Choose LED light bulbs that can be dimmed to a warm white color temperature to create a soft aura.

• Place darker shades on table lamps and floor lamps for a deep, soothing glow.

• Bring the outdoors in through lighting. Heavily influenced by nature, hygge style, much like Scandinavian style lighting, nods to natural phenomenon like the colors of sunsets and wood burning in a fire.

Organically shaped light fixtures, reminiscent of tree branches, and the use of natural fibers and fabrics epitomize the hygge style trend.

While cozy lighting is essential for dark winter nights, the long, lightfilled summer days also harmonize with hygge. Light, in general, is critical to hygge, whatever the season.

In the summer, hygge capitalizes on outdoor living. As the sun sets,

light outdoor spaces with twinkling rope lights and table lamps, pendants and chandeliers made specially to withstand outdoor conditions. Inside, use natural decorative elements and highlight them with fairy lights or electric lanterns. Take advantage of natural light flowing through the windows to create dramatic dark and light contrasts.

Place well-designed lamps and light fixtures thoughtfully throughout the space. Play around with combinations of lighting to create the perfect hygge setting for every occasion: soft summer evenings, crisp mornings, rainy afternoons, chilly winter nights.
