New location for The Sandbox just around the corner! BY JEANNIE ARMSTRONG SP Special Projects Editor
D
BE A FASHION original The Sandbox in The City celebrates the artistry of Italian fashion brand Eroke in this stunning dress worn by Claire Messett with She Modelling. Eroke is known for its interesting prints, vibrant colours and outstanding quality. The dress is fitted but super comfy, with a fabric blend of polyester/velvet and nylon elastine. For more casual outings, top the dress off with this zippered stretch faux suede jacket by Montreal fashion icon Joseph Ribkoff. A green/gold statement necklace by Carina and smart leather booties by Picadilly complete Claire’s fabulous look, all from The Sandbox in The City, just off Broadway. Claire’s hair and makeup artistry were created by Shawna Fairbairn, stylist with Visions Salon and Spa. Claire’s ‘do’ is a modern take on the classic ponytail. Shawna used Surface Sea Salt Spray to create texture. Playful curls and smooth strands were enhanced with Shift snap-in wax and Theory hairspray. Using SST make-up from Visions Salon and Spa, Shawna emphasized Claire’s blue eyes with shades of blue and charcoal. Her lip colour is a pale glossy pink.
edicated to helping women look and feel their best, The Sandbox in the City has become a premiere fashion destination for Saskatchewan women. Co-owners (and sisters) Colleen Tait and Juanita Schindel have created more than just a store; they’ve created a community where women of all ages can discover fashions that enhance and strengthen their sense of self. Colleen Tait first opened The Sandbox in Waskesiu in 1987. In 2006, the sisters joined forces and brought The Sandbox to Saskatoon, located at the corner of Broadway Avenue and Ninth Street. “People were skeptical; they told us no one would ever come this far down Broadway to shop,” laughs Schindel. The Sandbox in the City has become a destination in its own right, with a fiercely loyal clientele. It didn’t take long for the business to outgrow its current location, motivating the sisters to consider a move. “There’s no room to grow here; we’re maxxed out,” says Tait. “We can’t do all of the things we really want to do here,” says Schindel. Several years of dreaming, planning and construction will soon culminate in the opening of a new 3,000 square foot store, a few blocks away at 616 Main Street, just off Broadway. Located on the ground floor of a new four-storey commercial building designed by Kindrachuk Agrey Architecture, the new store will double the size of the existing Sandbox. “It’s going to be very spacious with room to display our fashions to best advantage. We’re adding more dressing rooms. We’ll

have a mezzanine level with an of office, a staff lunch room and an area for photo shoots,” says Tait. The sisters chose decor elements of industrial chic for the new store, including a 22-foot high open ceiling, exposed concrete walls and flooring. Floor-to-ceiling windows will illuminate the space with natural light. The building was designed and constructed to LEED standards for superior energy efficiency and sustainability. “We’re proud to be part of green development in Saskatoon,” says Tait. With all of that extra space, The Sandbox is expanding its already huge selection of fashion, jewellery and footwear. “There are some brands we just didn’t have room to carry. The Simpli line is a great example. A lot of women have been going out of province to find this great Canadian line,” says Tait. The best-selling Joseph Ribkoff collection from Montreal will have its own highlighted area within the store. “It’s an area exclusively dedicated to Ribkoff,” says Schindel. The Sandbox is also building on its treasure trove of jewellery, adding creations by local artisans. “We’ll highlight each designer’s collection in separate displays. Right now, it’s all squeezed together into one space,” says Schneider. The Sandbox loves to host special events, but was limited by a lack of space. “We want to hold more events in the new store. They won’t all be clothing related; there will be art events, community events,” says Tait. “We’ve always had lots of ideas. We
just haven’t had the space to run with them.” The Sandbox has a long history of community involvement, working to achieve positive change through fund-raising events, mentorships and donations to local charities. Recently, The Sandbox collected pyjamas for the women and children at Interval House. “We emailed our clients and put out a call to donate clean, freshly laundered pyjamas. The response was overwhelming. We donated 22 boxes of pyjamas,” says Tait. The Sandbox will add to its awesome all-girl staff at the new store. The sisters take pride in creating full-time careers and mentorship opportunities for their staff. “They’re not just here

working retail; they’re learning how to run a business. We give them the skills and confidence to be in this business, to take responsibility for their area and make decisions,” says Tait. The countdown is on to moving day, anticipated in November. “We can hardly wait! It’s going to be so exciting, so inspiring,” says Schindel. “The Sandbox has come a long way. Now it’s her time to shine!” says Tait.

ne of the best things about the change of seasons is the opportunity to start layering! Autumn has ushered in exciting new collections of sumptuous sweaters, sleek vests and statement jackets that we just can’t wait to cozy up to. “Fall is the most exciting time of year, says Tammy Kehoe, owner of Gentries in Scotia Centre. “There’s such a warm and cozy feel to the season. The textures just speak to me. Kehoe says layering is a great way to keep your look fresh and current. With the addition of a few breakout pieces to your existing wardrobe you can create a variety of great outfits to take you through the season with style. This season, the cardigan goes to all lengths to please. “The long cardigan is really in. Styles range from three-quarter length all the way to floor length. The longer you go, the more impact you create, says Kehoe. A sleeveless variation is the longline vest. Its elongated silhouette makes it a flattering choice for almost every body type. Wear it over tunics and leggings, your favourite tee and skinny jeans, a fitted pencil skirt or a body-skimming dress. “We’re also seeing the return of ponchos, capes and wraps, often embellished with fringe. It’s a fun way to introduce some boho chic into your wardrobe, says Kehoe. No designer has mastered the art of layering better than Belgian designer Sarah Pacini. Holding true to her philosophy that fashion is art, Pacini has won an international following for her contemporary silhouettes and dramatic draping. SAY WHAT?
What does your wardrobe say about
you?
BY HILARY KLASSEN of SP Special Projects
Your clothes are talking. Whenever you’re out and about, whether you’re walking through a mall, sitting by the river, or having lunch in a restaurant, you’re communicating. Before you even open your mouth, people form an instant opinion about you. It’s not just your body language and your posture, it’s your wardrobe and how you wear it. You’re making a statement. But what is your statement? Author Jennifer Baumgartner suggests, “You Are What You Wear” in her book by this title. “Clothing is an extension of who we are,” she says. Mackenzie Firby at Two Fifty Two (TFT) Boutique concurs. “Our clothing and personal style are the first impression we make on others and our wardrobe says a lot about us. You can tell a lot about a person by what they wear - colours and patterns, specific brands, they all convey the personality of the person wearing them. Your wardrobe is the billboard promoting you!” It’s something Firby seriously considers as she serves her clients at Two Fifty Two Boutique. She finds every client has their own personal style and their clothing reflects this. They are drawn to certain brands and items that reflect their style. “Some like to make a statement with bold colours and patterns and
others like to stay neutral - it truly depends on their personality.” On buying trips, like a recent one to New York City, Firby orders items with certain people in mind. “Sometimes an item jumps out at me and I know the exact client who will love it!” Clients’ personal styles vary from classic to trendy, and from boho to eclectic to modern. Each of these styles have personality traits associated with them which guide fashion choices. “Outgoing people who want to stand out will seek out bold colours and patterns to reflect this. People who don’t want to draw attention to themselves will choose neutral colours to ensure they don’t stand out,” she says. Clothing choices can also reflect what’s going on inside. “Your clothes reveal more about your internal life than you realize. Think of your closet as symptomatic,” says Baumgartner. Making an accurate personal statement with your wardrobe involves bringing this understanding into awareness. Firby says the fall fashion season boasts jewel tones like emerald, cobalt blue, bordeaux, plum and navy in classic and streamlined looks. “Leather and fur are always great accents and are evident in many of the lines we carry this fall. Pairing cute dresses with booties and leather jackets are on trend this year. And more plaid - it’s here again this fall!” Customers can expect to find many amazing items in the next few months in the TFT Boutique showroom. Firby’s advice is to “ensure that what you purchase for your wardrobe this fall reflects your personality and personal style. What you wear is your statement to the world!” Visit twofiftytwoboutique.com and get fashion inspired.
c o v e t e d LABELS Two Fifty Two Boutique shops the fashion capitals of the world, bringing back coveted designer labels for fashion-hungry Saskatoon women. This smart ensemble worn by Kiera of She Modelling features fabulous ‘chili pepper’ coloured denim by Brazil’s Beija-Flor and a luxurious soft tank and jacket by L.A.’s Blaque Label. l u s c i o u s LAYERS Layered looks are always on trend for fall and winter. Fashion Chronicle in The Centre presents the season’s top separates, as seen in this look of easy elegance worn by Janet Tauber, featuring top Canadian designers. Janet’s smart black-and-white textured boucle knit jacket is by Montreal fashion leader Joseph Ribkoff. The jacket’s removable undersleeve adds to its versatility. Janet teams the jacket with a black pant by Frank Lyman. The pant is a comfortable pull-on with a wide waistband. Update your fall and winter wardrobe with a visit to Fashion Chronicle, in The Centre on Eighth Street.
ometimes we amateur fashionistas hunger for a wardrobe item that is ageless, that we can love for a longer time, and that doesn’t peg us by a calendar date. Are there fashions that work for all ages? According to Candice Jones of Fashion Chronicle, one such option is the shift dress. “The shift dress transcends all ages and has been around since Audrey Hepburn,” she says. Of course, in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ it was solid black. “But now it’s available in all colours, prints, with little cap sleeves, etc. It’s just a great style. Anybody, really, can wear a shift dress.” Another is the trouser pant, a basic black pant that is not skinny and not wide-legged, and therefore always in style. Regardless of your stage in life, everyone needs at least one of these in their wardrobe. “Your basic silhouette of your trouser pant never goes out of style.” Jones says women of all ages welcome the change in seasons when it comes to fashion. Many shoppers flock into the store in February and August to see what’s coming in for spring or for fall. “A change of season always excites women because they’ve had six months of summer or six months of winter and they’re ready for a change,” says Jones. While professional women such as lawyers may still be buying the three piece suit – blazer, skirt, and pants – Jones says most women don’t wear them anymore. Instead she’s seen a growing passion for novel and uniquely interesting items. Novelty wardrobe items create a distinctive look – some have added bling, unique prints, fringe or jewelry embellishments. Women of all ages are looking for a sense of fun in their wardrobe choices. “If you’re comparing mother with daughter, they want fun. We’ll have a mother and daughter come in and they’ll buy entirely different things, but they picked the fun aspect of it,” says Jones. Older women want to look younger, and they steer clear of anything remotely matronly. “They want all the leggings and the tunics and the asymmetrical looks.” Investment dressing is attractive to all ages because “nothing really goes out of style anymore,” according to Jones, unless perhaps if you go back 10 years. “If someone invests in an item, they shouldn’t worry that it’s too pricey because it’s going to last more than just one season.” Today we’re less likely to hear the complaint, ‘oh, that’s so last year.’ “You want to invest in a wardrobe that is fun and affordable and that will last.” Fashion Chronicle is bringing in more glamour looks this fall. “We went through a few years where people were buying more conservative. They wanted daytime looks even for evening events. Now I’m seeing a return to glamour and people wanting to dress up more for occasions – mother of the bride, and of course for cocktail parties and the like.” Everyone is always interested in the colour story when a new season dawns. Jones says Fashion Chronicle always carries a lot of colour which is themed throughout the store. Plum has asserted itself as a star colour this fall, along with similar shades in the same family. There are greys too, which pair beautifully with the plum family. Over 36 years, Jones has established a regular clientele and they’re always top of mind on her buying trips. Stop by Fashion Chronicle to discuss your fashion needs.
PRO BEAUTY TIPS: The art of contouring

f you yearn for chiseled cheekbones, a slimmer face, even a perky nose, Paulette Schumacher, owner of Merle Norman Studio in Scotia Centre, can teach you a trick or two! Contouring is no longer a secret privy only to celebrities. Schumacher says you can contour your face in three easy steps! “Contouring is about reshaping your face,” says Schumacher. “I use contouring to help narrow my face. I like to give myself more sculpted cheekbones and contour along the jawline. Then I highlight the tip of my chin and brighten up the middle of my face for a more sculpted look.”
from
STEP ONE: PREP The perfect makeup application depends on a smooth surface. Start by exfoliating your skin with Merle Norman’s Gentle Polish. Continue your regular skin care routine, then apply Foundation Primer plus SPF 15. After applying your favourite foundation and concealer, it’s time to contour and highlight, using Merle Norman’s Bronzing Powder and Liquid Shimmer highlighter. “Choose a contour powder that’s two or three shades darker than your face. Merle Norman’s Bronzing Powder comes in two different shades,” says Schumacher. “For highlighting, I use Merle Norman’s Liquid Shimmer, but you can also use a creamy concealer.”
STEP TWO: PLACE Using Merle Norman’s Face #5 brush, apply Bronzing Powder along the hairline, below the cheekbones, along the jawline and down the sides of your nose. If you have a wider forehead, you can also apply the contouring powder to each temple. “With your brush, pick up some of the contour powder and shake the excess off the brush. Then draw a line from the top of your ear toward the corner of your mouth, but only take the line about half-way. Always start at the top of your ear, because if you start lower, it can make your cheek look saggy,” says Schumacher. “If you want to extend the contouring line further, do this during the blending step, working towards the corner of your mouth.” Then it’s time to highlight and illuminate your best features. Apply Merle Norman’s Liquid Shimmer, using Face #7 brush, down the bridge of your nose, the center of your forehead, the top of your cheekbones, the cupid’s bow above your top lip and the top of your chin.

Anthonys Fashion no longer just for men!
BY JENNIFER JACOBY-SMITH of SP Special Projects
O
wner Anthony Graham-Cutts says for 15 years, his clients’ significant others have been clamouring for Anthonys Fashion for Men to expand its offerings to women. Now they have their wish. The store, located on First Avenue, temporarily closed on September 6, with plans to reopen sometime this month in a newly expanded space with fashions for both men and women. The store will keep its same warm wood floors and cozy atmosphere, but with almost double the space at 3,700 square feet. “We grew to the point in this spot where we were a little claustrophobic in here,” says Graham-Cutts. “Carrying the product that we do and the variety that we do, we really needed a little bit more space and we didn’t want to move again. We moved six years ago from Second Avenue to here and we like our home here.” The new ladies’ side of things will carry similar value-based brands as the men’s side, such as Mexx, Selected Femme and Black Bull. The store will cater to women ages 20 to 50, with styles designed for work as well as play, from office wear to casual gear. Anthonys will feature all the fashion essentials, including denim, t-shirts, sweaters, dresses, as well as shoes and accessories. “We’re kind of jumping in with both feet and offering a little bit of everything,” says Graham-Cutts. In addition, they hope to specialize in some of the more hard-tofind essentials for a woman’s wardrobe. “We listened to our clients as to what they found difficult,” says Graham-Cutts. “Finding a basic suit for a reasonable price, a basic white blouse that fits well, denim that isn’t your grandmother’s or your teenage daughter’s – all difficult things from what I understand.” The store will also work to carry more than the standard one extra-small, two smalls, two mediums and one large. The store will carry extra-smalls and down to a 24-inch waist, but they will also carry larger sizes up to double-XL. Graham-Cutts adds, his customer service team will listen carefully to feedback from their new clients and make adjustments to what they carry as the season goes on. He thinks women in Saskatoon will appreciate the top notch customer service his team prides themselves on, including history tracking and alterations.
As always, Anthonys Fashion will continue to carry contemporary styles. One of the labels they will stock is California Moon Rise which, for fall, offers a lot of dip-dyed items with a Bohemian vibe. Of course, all the fall tones are rich and warm, such as pretty plums and burgundies. At last couples will be able to shop for complementary colours when they want to coordinate their outfits for special occasions. As always, Graham-Cutts is focused on getting the smallest details right. So his team will be committed to keeping the store clean and neat, and avoid visvis ual clutter in their displays. The goal is to make it easier to browse racks and pull together looks from different parts of the store. He admits, it’s something they’ve learned from serving the men for almost 15 years. He adds, “[Shop“[Shop ping] shouldn’t be difficult. It should be easy and very enjoyable.”
f a l l IN LOVE Anthonys Fashion shows off their brand new ladies’ fashion division thanks to Britni Lee Michel of Masala Model and Talent. Britni looks gorgeous in one of the hottest trends for fall – a beautiful sweater dress from Bobbi Black in a rich wine hue. A chic goat leather blazer accents the outfit along with hand-made goat leather boots, both from Selected Femme. The look is pulled together with a bold metallic necklace, ring and earrings set from Garbo. And to make sure she’s ready for whatever her day throws at her, she’s got a perfect takeeverywhere satchel from KG and B. Check out all the latest ladies fashions at the newly reopened Anthonys Fashion on First Avenue.
Pro Beauty Tips continued from page 7.
STEP THREE: BLEND Softly blend the edges of your bronzer and highlighter to eliminate any harsh lines or edges. Using a clean Face #7 brush or sponge, blend the lines of Bronzing Powder and Liquid Shimmer. “Create a wiggle movement with the brush when blending,” says Schumacher. “You can also use a sponge to blend the lines. Don’t wipe; use a patting motion instead. For the most natural look, you want to blend the contour line on your cheek to curve slightly, in a C-shape.” A light dusting of Sheer Face Powder will help set the look. THE RIGHT FIT:

ELWOOD FLYNN KNOWS HOW TO GET THE MEASURE OF A MAN
BY HILARY KLASSEN SP Special Projects
B
eyond personality, smarts and good looks, taking the measure of a man can come down to inches: a 33inch sleeve or a 35-inch inseam. But in the premier fashion world of Elwood Flynn, it’s much more than that. It’s a cultivated expertise designed to serve each individual client. “Our job is to clothe people in the best way possible,” says Ryan Walter of Elwood Flynn. “It really depends on the individual.” In their case, this means achieving the right wardrobe selections and the right fit for the slimmer build, the more muscular prairie build, and a lot of hockey players and football players. Great wardrobe choices such as suits only work if they’re also a great fit. But not every shopper knows what constitutes a great fit or recognizes its importance. Fashion guru Antonio Centeno of Real Men Real Style says, “Most men don’t realize it, but the way their clothes hang on their body is actually the most defining aspect of their appearance.” Centeno has been featured in the New York Times, Business Insider and elsewhere. He learned the power of personal presentation in the U.S. Marine Corps. Centeno identifies seven deadly style sins, and a bad fit is number one. His “Real Men Real Style Guide to Fit” illustrates many fit errors that are commonly seen. From sleeve length to the drape of the trouser, the fit has a direct impact on the statement you make. “Too many men fail to understand that how they look is how they are perceived by others; and how we are perceived by others can have a huge effect on how successful we are at work, at home, and in life,” says Centeno, adding that a book is judged by its cover. Elwood Flynn helps customers avoid fit issues they may be totally unaware of. “We are able to recognize how some of these things work and how you fix them,” says Rob McNab of Elwood Flynn. These include shoulders that are too wide and hang over, lapels that are bulging, trousers that are pulling in the thigh or hanging in the seat, jackets that are too tight around the waist, shirt cuff visibility, etc. McNab says the importance of a great fit has been brought home even more since the onset of the slim-fitting suit trend. An easy mistake some men make is to assume buying a smaller size gets them the look. “With the influence of a trimmer fit in the last few years, it’s a little more complex and we end up doing more tailoring,” says McNab. The fall fashion season has launched at Elwood Flynn, bringing new looks, new hues and new opportunities
in fashion. The latest iteration of the double breasted suit is on the racks. “It’s not as big and boxy as it was 15 or 20 years ago,” says Walter. “It’s sleeker, trimmer, with a flat front pant, suppressed waist and more of an hourglass silhouette.” There’s a great selection of five-pocket trousers as well. “Guys are wearing more sport coats and no ties, so it’s a more casual type of pant to wear with the sports jacket.” Walter is loving the rich, dark au-
tumn shades of olive, cognac and chestnut, with accent shades of ginger and orange. “Along with the richer deeper palette, we have a greater variety of textures. We can combine the depth of tones in flannels or convert clothes with woolen sport coats. The cooler weather gives us the opportunity to layer with sweaters, scarves and cozy overcoats,” says Walter. Visit Elwood Flynn for spectacular fashions, a custom fit and a staff that understands your unique physique!
s e r i o u s l y STYLISH From Elwood Flynn For Men, Model Ryan Walter is seriously fashionable in a multi-tone check sport coat from Warren K. Cook. Made in Canada, the sport coat ups the fashion quotient with a bit of colour. Ryan can dress it up with a crisp dress shirt or down with a denim jean. Ryan pairs the versatile jacket with a fine calvary twill trouser in azure blue by Samuelsohn and a dressy Lipson shirt in dove grey and looks ready to take on the boardroom or drinks after work. The Dion silk tie draws out the blue and gold colours in the jacket and a coordinating pocket hankie ties it all together. Up your style quotient at Elwood Flynn For Men located on Third Avenue in downtown Saskatoon.

MIX, DON’T MATCH Forget matching and embrace co-ordination. Finding exact colour matches for ties and shirts can be almost impossible. Mix up your look by adding texture, pattern and blending different tones. Don’t forget the pocket square! It adds a pop of colour to your outfit and helps coordinate you with your date. It also dresses up your outfit without needing a tie.

SOCKS MATTER The simplest rule of thumb when selecting socks is that their color should never match the shoe. Choose a single element of your getup – the tie, the shirt, the blazer – and match that. — mensjournal.com

back to business BY JEANNIE ARMSTRONG SP Special Projects Editor
A
utumn has arrived, the season to suit up and return to business. It’s time to stow away the golf shirts and take stock of what’s in your closet for the busy season ahead. Gord Burgess, owner of Caswells Co., says slimmer suit silhouettes continue to dominate menswear collections for fall and winter. “Suits are going strong this season. The trim fit is still the look for this season. The shape and fit of the garment is very important.” The hallmarks of a contemporary suit include shorter jackets cut to the shape of the body and pants that are tighter in the thigh and tapered in the leg. Caswells has shopped the European, Canadian and American markets to bring a number of exclusive menswear lines to Saskatoon. Van Gils is one of the more recent additions to Caswells’ menswear line-up. Burgess says the fashion-forward line from the Netherlands emphasizes the individual style his younger customers seek to express. Signature top-stitching and unique detailing on buttons, button holes and under-collar trims set the Van Gils line apart from the mainstream, while maintaining that professional edge. The internationally renowned Hugo Boss line has long been a fashion mainstay for Caswells. For Fall/Winter 2015, The Boss menswear collection boasts innovative fabrications, with a strong

tonal colour message. “We carry the complete Boss package, both casual and dress. It’s probably our most complete collection in the store,” says Burgess. For its custom suit program, Caswells has partnered with Ontario-based Coppley Company, one of Canada’s most distinguished suit makers. In the forefront of men’s premier apparel since 1883, Coppley delivers unmistakeable style for Fall/Winter 2015. The superbly tailored pieces embrace fall’s new colour palette, cut from the finest Italian wools. Shades of blue and grey headline the colour story for men’s suiting this season. Blue reigned supreme for spring and summer, notes Burgess. “For fall and winter, tones have deepened to mid-blue and mid-grey. There’s a little less black being shown this season.” To complement your new fall suit, select a dress shirt in one of the season’s fresh micro-prints, including subtle pin-dots, geometric shapes and checks. “These shirts can be worn for dress or sport either with or without ties,” says Burgess. Fit is an important consideration when selecting a dress shirt, he adds. “We have customers of all sizes, but what they have in common is that they all want the same fashion. When we buy shirts for our customers, we have to buy three different shirt silhouettes: ultra-slim, regular and contemporary fit.” Add a pop of colour to your look with one of the season’s newest ties. “We’re seeing a lot of pin-dots, geometric prints and paisleys. Ties are more colour based; tone-on-tone is strong,” says Burgess. Pocket squares, lapel pins and colourful socks have never been more popular, he adds. “A lot of guys will wear a suit with a nice printed shirt, and instead of wearing a tie with it, they’ll add a lapel pin that get that extra focus.” Because life should never be all work and no play, Caswells also offers a great selection of casual wear for men. “Denim is still very strong in the marketplace. The newest look is coloured denim,” says Burgess. Blue and grey are popular, as are earthy tones like copper, taupe and olive. Milled and textured finishes add extra visual interest. Caswells has just introduced the Armani denim line exclusively to Saskatchewan. “There is a nice range of jeans, t-shirts, sport shirts and jackets. Armani is one of the great names in fashion. Very few designers reach that level of recognition and expertise. It’s also a great fitting denim line, one that the higher fashion denim customer will appreciate,” says Burgess. Canada Goose outwear has become a best-seller for Caswells, with the iconic parkas selling out almost as quickly as they can be unpacked. “Because of world-wide demand, Canada Goose has been in a sold-out position for the past eight years. We order in December for August delivery. If you want a Canada Goose jacket, you should come in and get one while they’re in stock. There are only a certain number of them out there,” says Burgess. Founded in 1911, Caswells has attired Saskatoon’s style-conscious men for the past 104 years. Last year, the retailer relocated from Scotia Centre to a new free-standing location at 144 Second Avenue South. While offering an enhanced sense of style to its many long-time customers, Caswells has also succeeded in attracting a younger clientele to its new location. Burgess has savvy advice for young professionals who have just begun to develop their corporate image. “Always start with the basics - a navy or mid-grey suit, followed by a navy or black blazer. Those have always been core pieces of a professional wardrobe. That’s where this season’s new blue suit really fits in. It’s a great option to classic navy. You can use that new midblue suit as a core piece now.”
PROFESSIONAL e d g e Maintain your professional edge while expressing individual style, in topnotch menswear from Caswells. Gregg Bamford wears a fashion-forward suit by Van Gils, a new addition to Caswells menswear line-up from the Netherlands. The charcoal three-piece fine wool suit is distinguished by its slim fit, unique detailing and signature top-stitching. Caswells complements Gregg’s suit with a geometric-patterned dress shirt and silk stripe tie, both by Eton of Sweden. His colourful pocket square is by Dion. Caswells has dressed Saskatoon men for success since 1911, located at 144 Second Avenue South in downtown Saskatoon.
ON OUR COVER WELL SUITED for fall For Anthonys Fashion, Matt Hunter of She Modelling proves that thoughtful choices can help a guy stand out on the fashion front. Matt starts with a modern slim-fit suit from Selected that has a charcoal and black check pattern, creating an understated texture. A Polifroni Blu shirt in burgundy, with contrasting buttons and a patterned cuff, gives options for dressing up or down. To accessorize it, Matt chose a fashion forward plum knit silk tie with square bottom from Sloane and a cabernet pocket square pulls everything together. The soft goat leather wingtip boots from Selected are hand-made in Portugal. The coordinating cowhide belt is made in Canada. Get Matt’s polished look at Anthonys Fashion on First Avenue. Matt Hunter’s hair was styled for this shoot by Amanda Doering of Visions Salon and Spa in downtown Saskatoon. Matt’s hair is a barber cut with new age flair. Amanda styled Matt’s hair using Surface Men’s Mud Styling Paste for a matte finish. She applied Surface Curls hairspray to hold that look!

t might sound strange but the latest trend in fashion, according to Ultimo Euromoda’s Barry Flynn, is all about sweat pants. Well, sweat pants, that don’t look like sweat pants. They’re called digitally printed sweat pant jeans. It started last year when Diesel Jeans from Italy figured out how to take a photo of jeans, load into a digital printer, and then print it onto a jersey fabric. “Just like your regular camera, the higher the mega-pixel the more detail it can capture, explains Flynn. The technology has evolved and the latest versions can print not only the wash of denim, but also the texture. “So nobody knows they’re sweats unless you tell them. That’s how good they are, says Flynn. “The fabric is less money than premium denim and it’s more durable. The added bonus is the fabric is much denser than a traditional denim, meaning super cold winter days won’t freeze your legs. As well, because the fabric is cotton, it still breathes. raving to stay in step with fashion this season? Put a buckle on it! On fashion runways around the world, footwear designers have made buckles this season’s defining detail. According to Footwear News, the trend started last year with men’s fashion footwear, with choices ranging from Ted Baker’s double monk strap wingtip to Alexander Wang’s modified ski boot. For Autumn/Winter 2015, buckles have graduated to women’s footwear collections, making an appearance on everything from boots to stilettos. The buckle is amazingly adaptive. Designers like Manolo Blahnik, Prada and Valentino have adorned strappy stilettos and high-heeled maryjanes with dainty metallic buckles. Miu Miu, always a trend leader, is embellishing the toes of several of its classic patent pumps with large pilgrim-style buckles. Every major footwear brand is offering a moto-inspired boot this season. Chunky oversized buckles and metal studding elevate the ankle boot’s edgy style. Stuart Weitzman’s ‘Go West’ studded leather ankle boot embodies this look perfectly.

fall fashion FRENCH CONNECTION Angles SalonSpa wins triple honours at national awards
BY JEANNIE ARMSTRONG SP Special Projects Editor

an a Saskatoon salon win acclaim in Paris, the fashion capital of the world? Angles SalonSpa, located in Midtown Plaza, has achieved that honour, for a third consecutive year. The salon has maintained a longtime partnership with La Biosthetique, the global total beauty brand headquartered in Paris. For the third year running, stylists from Angles SalonSpa have been invited to represent Canada at La BiosBios thetique’s Beauty Stylist Awards. “We have three stylists who have placed in the top five in North America!” says Tammy McLean, founder and director of Angles SalonSpa. “We’re awaiting the final results to learn who has placed first. That stylist will be joining me in Paris this month to compete in the international Beauty Stylist Awards. We’ll be competing against stylists from 27 other countries,” says McLean. The compelling looks created by Angles’ styling team combine “art, fashion and beauty,” says McLean. “We connected two worlds together, the old and the new, to create looks that are both inspiring and exciting.” Each of the winning submissions reflects the salon’s creativity and finesse. “The poses and looks were very strong. The lines were defined either by the cut or through the use of colour. With bold colour, we created a softer cut. If there was a subtle colour, a bolder cut went with it,” says McLean. The stylists demonstrated their mastery of colour three ways. “Our first look featured soft pastel tones of mauve, blue and pink. Our second look offered dark, bold colours with a shadowing effect. Our third look was a very soft and blended, more natural effect,” says McLean. The stylists at Angles SalonSpa train throughout the year in preparation for the intense international competition of the Beauty Stylist awards. “Training and education is everything to us. It’s really important that my staff stay cutting edge and always have something new to offer our clients. All of our staff is European-trained. We sent seven of our stylists and three of our estheticians to train in Germany and France,” says McLean. The salon’s investment in education and training has paid off with impressive results. McLean says, “We have four International Beauty Stylist winners; seven International Beauty Stylist finalists; and four Top Canadian La Biosthetique Master Colourists.” McLean not only guides her own talented staff, she travels across North America as a platform artist and educator for La Biosthetique in four dif different categories: hair care, skin care, makeup and business. She keeps a sharp eye on the fashion runways of the world to identify current hair and beauty trends. “For fall and winter, longer hair is more femfem inine, romantic and playful. There’s a ‘less is more’ attitude. For shorter hair, the trend is to a more androgynous style… very strong beautiful looks with a hint of mystery or feminine power,” says McLean. “We offer something for everybody – whether you’re a person who wants to try something fun and on trend; someone who is bold and wants to make a statement; or someone who wants a style that complements their natural beauty.” For more information, visit www. anglessalonspa.com.

The art of
Balayage
A
hair colouring technique developed in France in the 1970s, Balayage is experiencing a renaissance in salons around the world. The French term describes the sweeping motion used in this freehand technique of colour applicaapplica tion. The stylist paints ribbons of colour through the hair, creating a sun-kissed finish with gorgeous depth and dimension. Typically used to create soft, natural highlights, your stylist can achieve a gradient effect, taking the colour progressively lighter the further it moves down the hair strand. Less is often more when it comes to Balayage, howhow ever that hasn’t stopped the Visions Salon and Spa styling team from playing with bold reds and fun pastels!
Is Balayage for you? Balayage is best done on natural hair but coloured hair will also work. Balayage can transform a varvar iety of hairstyles, from short pixie cuts to long layers. At Visions Salon and Spa, we have a famous haircut that we call “freedom” which works perfectly with this technique. Freedom creates flowing natural laylay ers that are beautifully enhanced by dimensional colcol our. Typically Balayage looks best on layered flowing haircuts rather than blunt strong styles, yet never say
never when it comes to colour and options. When styling hair that has been hand-painted, a loose beachy curl will complement the colour perfectly. The curls really show off the multiple tones that Balayage creates. However, when Balayage is done well, styling the hair straight should look just as gorgeous.
How to maintain your Balayage Balayage is the perfect option for women who want a high impact, low maintenance style. With this soft, blended look, regrowth lines are less noticeable, allowing for less frequent touch-ups. The most important thing to consider are the hair care products you are using at home to reduce colour fading and keep your hair healthy. All of Vision Salon’s Surface products are loaded with antioxidants and reparative ingredients to keep your hair healthy and strong, and promote long-lasting colour. Trinity protein cream (a leave-in conditioning spray) is a must to protect your hair from sun, heat and everyday wear and tear. The high performance, all-natural Surface hair care line is available exclusively in salons across North America, developed by Wayne Grund, founder of Visions Salon and Spa in downtown Saskatoon. This article was contributed by Visions Salon and Spa.
COLOUR artistry
First developed in France, the freehand hair painting technique of Balayage is trending around the world. Paige Voz, stylist at Visions Salon and Spa, used Balayage to create her model’s beautiful sun-kissed blonde highlights. Paige then styled Fallon’s hair with loose, tousled curls to show off the tonal differences in her natural-looking blonde highlights. Visions Salon stylist and makeup artist Shawna Fairbairn complemented Fallon’s natural beauty with a subtle make-up application. She highlighted Fallon’s eyes with a diffused liner and shimmery champagne shadow, and chose a glossy pale pink colour for her lips. Make this your season to try the colour trend everyone’s talking about - Balayage - at Visions Salon and Spa, located downtown at the corner of First Avenue and 25th Street.
Fashion icons for every decade BY SHARON MOSLEY CREATORS.COM
A
udrey Hepburn. Twiggy. Ali MacGraw. They are just a few of the fashion icons who have inspired us all with their individual styles. Designers always have their own personal muses to whom they turn when they want to call up fashion classics that are still relevant today. • The ‘50s. Audrey Hepburn. Her easy elegance will always be in style. Her wardrobe was simple, yet chic - tailored suits, the perfect little black dress, sleek black trousers, crisp white shirts, classic turtlenecks, ballet flats and those signature oversized black sunglasses. It’s still a go-to list for all of us 60 years later. • The ‘60s. It was a youthful decade, full of rockers and models who transitioned from the space age to the Age of Aquarius. The names of the players are still familiar today:
London’s androgynous Twiggy; sexy actresses Brigitte Bardot and Catherine Deneuve; and bohemian rockers such as Marianne Faithfull. Their freespirited styles broke all the rules and started a fashion revolution that has once again influenced today’s designers. • The ‘70s. Disco and punk blended into the fashions of the day a la Debbie Harry, Jerry Hall and Bianca Jagger. Designers such as Yves Saint Laurent, Bill Blass and Halston took care of all the “beautiful people.” Calvin Klein and his jeans turned Brooke Shields
Let Let
into an advertising sensation. And then there were the more “buttoned down” years of the fashion icons such as Ali MacGraw and her “Love Story” wardrobe of cozy knits and preppy plaids. • The ‘80s. Fast forward into the ‘80s: club fever was heating up the fashion scene. Madonna was all the rage with her outrageous lingerie-inspired dance clothes. Her lace corset tops, elbow gloves and tight skirts have once again showed up this fall. On the flip side, there were designers who reacted with conservative style, dressing the likes of Princess Diana. “The Preppy Handbook” debuted in 1980 and the culture clash was on country club vs. nightclub. • The ‘90s. As a new age of yuppies dawned with matching suits and bow-tied blouses with sneakers worn
to work, there was another reactionary movement - this time on the part of fashion designers who (of course) wanted to rail against the “corporateness” of it all. Using waif-like models, these mavericks did their “grunge” thing, providing a startling contrast to the sleek, minimal looks of Calvin Klein, Donna Karan and Helmut Lang. • The new millenium. The last two decades have been filled with a mix of all of the above. Trends come and go as fast as the seasons change. aseason’s favorites: Michelle Obama, who has mastered the mix of high and low fashion, and quirky Gwyneth Paltrow. The good news is that fashion designers now focus less on the latest fads and more on giving savvy consumers, inundated with instant electronic buying power, more choices than ever. This fall, there is indeed something for everyone, whether you’re a fan of Audrey’s sleek chic, Madonna’s rock-star flash, Ali MacGraw’s preppy elegance or geek chic. There may be a little bit of these icons in us all. Creators.com

Hillberg & Berk brings sparkle to downtown Saskatoon BY JEANNIE ARMSTRONG SP Special Projects Editor
R
egina designer Rachel Mielke says it seems like only yesterday when she stood before the formidable quartet of venture capitalists on CBC TV’s Dragon’s Den, pitching her fledgling artisan jewellery business. In the episode that aired in November, 2008, Mielke sold billionaire Brett Wilson on her idea, and with his investment and backing, launched Hillberg & Berk. Over the past seven years, Hillberg & Berk has expanded at a dizzying pace. The company’s greatest growth has occurred in the past 12 months, with the opening of five retail locations in Saskatchewan and Alberta. “We opened our first Sparkle Bar last fall in Regina’s Cornwall Centre. It’s essentially an abbreviated offering of our different collections – our seasonal and Sparkle collections, as well as one-of-a-kind designs,” says Mielke. Customers love Regina’s Sparkle Bar so much that Hillberg & Berk decided to expand into the Edmonton market. “We opened a Sparkle Bar at West Edmonton Mall this summer, and five weeks later opened another in Edmonton’s Kingsway Mall. Response to both locations has been really positive. We’re really pushing hard to ramp up our brand awareness in Alberta,” says Mielke. Hillberg & Berk is now ready to dazzle Saskatoon shoppers with the opening of a full-scale store in Midtown Plaza. The glamorous boutique, which will showcase the entire H&B line, will be located on the upper level of Midtown Plaza, above Victoria’s Secret. The Saskatoon store’s grand opening is slated for Saturday, November 21, with a soft opening a few days prior. “It’s going to be an absolutely gorgeous store. I’m thrilled to come to Saskatoon! We’ve been having a lot of success online from Saskatoon, so definitely the timing is right for us to be arriving on the scene there,” says Mielke. “By Christmas 2015, we’ll have five retail locations. From one year ago, when we had one, to five by the end of this year, is so exciting.” Contributing to Hillberg & Berk’s phenomenal growth is the worldwide attention that was bestowed upon the company after it received a ‘royal nod’ of approval. “We had the privilege of designing and gifting a brooch to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth in 2013. She’s been spotted wearing it in public four times in the past 18 months, an honour that has been truly humbling,” says Mielke. The company’s breathtaking trajectory served to inspire Hillberg & Berk’s 15th and newest seasonal collection, themed ‘Taking Flight.’ “This collection celebrates our growth

and success as a business by channelling notions of beauty and fearlessness,” says Mielke. Photos for the season’s campaign were shot on location in London, England, captured at influential historic landmarks. The Autumn/Winter 2015 collection abounds with uniquely precious stones and fine jewels, including amethyst, moonstone, crystals, hematite and onyx. Talon-shaped stones and feather charms are reminiscent of the dream of flight, says Mielke. “For example, there are many pieces with hematite and HILLBERG & BERK onyx… beautiful greys and blacks inspired by raven’s feathers.” TAKES FLIGHT Mixed metals are also prominent in the new H&B collection, Since being commissioned to design including combinations of gold an amazing brooch for Queen with rose gold, gold and silver, Elizabeth, which she has now worn and gold paired with oxidized four times in public, Hillberg & chain.
