In 1932-33, millions of Ukrainians were purposely starved to death by the Soviet regime led by Joseph Stalin. To break the back of “nationalist” resistance to Soviet power, an ancient nation was condemned to death by artificial famine. All grain and foodstuffs were forcibly seized. The territory of Soviet Ukraine and the predominantly Ukrainian-populated Kuban region of the Northern Caucasus (Soviet Russia) were isolated by armed units, so that people could not go in search of food to the neighbouring regions where it was more readily available. In little more than a year one-quarter of the population of Soviet Ukraine perished. The result was the Ukrainian genocide of 1932-33, known in Ukrainian as the Holodomor (from holod – famine, and moryty – to kill). In November of each year, people world-wide honour the victims of this crime against humanity.

THE “FIVE EARS OF GRAIN” LAW Wheat, the symbol of life, prosperity and spiritual wealth, is the grain that, for centuries, has been associated with the livelihood of many nations. During the Ukrainian HolodomorFamine Genocide of 1932-33, however, it became a weapon of genocide orchestrated to destroy the very fabric of the Ukrainian nation.

On August 7, 1932, Joseph Stalin and his communist regime authored a law which sentenced to death or 10 years’ imprisonment anyone accused of the misappropriation of collective farm property. This law led to mass arrests and executions as hungry Ukrainians searched for the smallest scraps of food. Even children caught picking handfuls of grain from fields were convicted. The law became known as the “Law of Five Ears of Grain.”

The Ukrainian World Congress adopted this logo as the international logo for the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Ukrainian Holodomor-Famine Genocide, 1932-33. Its design symbolizes the law of “Five Ears of Grain” by depicting five stalks of wheat delicately bound with a black ribbon. The logo will continue to serve as a reminder of the devastation characterized by the law, as well as the Ukrainian nation’s determination to live and prosper; the nation’s future.

On May 7, 2008, Saskatchewan became the first province in Canada to recognize the Holodomor as an act of genocide through the passage of Bill 40: An Act to Recognize the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor). Introduced by Deputy Premier Ken Krawetz, with the unanimous support of MLAs from both the Government and Official Opposition, Bill 40 has enshrined the fourth Saturday in November in each year as “Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day” for the purposes of recognizing the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) of 1932-33 and for the reflection on the lessons to be learned from that event.

• In late 1932 - precisely when the famine struck - the Central Statistical Bureau in Moscow ceased to publish demographic data; • On Stalin’s orders, those who conducted the 1937 Census, which revealed a sharp decrease in the Ukrainian population as a result of the Holodomor, were shot and the census results were suppressed.

У 1932-33 роках мільйони українців були свідомо замучені голодом радянською владою на чолі Йосипом Сталіним. Щоб зламати хребет «націоналістичного» опору радянській владі, прадавній народ був засуджений до смертної кари через штучний голод. Усе зерно та продукти харчування було силоміць вилучено. Територія Радянської України і Кубані, переважно українських поселень на Північному Кавказі (радянська Росія), була ізольована збройними формуваннями. Людей не пускали на пошуки продовольства до сусідніх регіонів, де харчі були доступними. Чверть населення радянської України було знищено протягом трохи більше року. Наслідком такої політики став геноцид 1932-33 років, відомий в Україні як Голодомор. Щороку, в листопаді місяці, люди всього світу вшановують пам’ять жертв цього злочину проти людства.

Величезна кількість дітей стали сиротами та втратили житло. • Українське населення зменшилося на близько 25%. УРОЖАЙ І ПОГОДНІ УМОВИ: • Урожай 1931 року склав 18.3 мільйонів тон збіжжя; • Урожай 1932 року склав 14.6 мільйонів тон збіжжя; • Урожай 1933 року склав 22.3 мільйони тон збіжжя; • Під час Голодомору радянський режим спрямував 1.7 мільйону тон збіжжя на західні ринки.

On May 7, 2008, Saskatchewan became the first province in Canada to recognize the Holodomor as an act of genocide through the passage of Bill 40: An Act to Recognize the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor). Introduced by Deputy Premier Ken Krawetz, with the unanimous support of MLAs from both the Government and Official Opposition, Bill 40 has enshrined the fourth Saturday in November in each year as “Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial Day” for the purposes of recognizing the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide (Holodomor) of 1932-33 and for the reflection on the lessons to be learned from that event.

У 1932-33 роках мільйони українців були свідомо замучені голодом радянською владою на чолі Йосипом Сталіним. Щоб зламати хребет «націоналістичного» опору радянській владі, прадавній народ був засуджений до смертної кари через штучний голод. Усе зерно та продукти харчування було силоміць вилучено. Територія Радянської України і Кубані, переважно українських поселень на Північному Кавказі (радянська Росія), була ізольована збройними формуваннями. Людей не пускали на пошуки продовольства до сусідніх регіонів, де харчі були доступними. Чверть населення радянської України було знищено протягом трохи більше року. Наслідком такої політики став геноцид 1932-33 років, відомий в Україні як Голодомор. Щороку, в листопаді місяці, люди всього світу вшановують пам’ять жертв цього злочину проти людства.

A monument in remembrance of the millions who perished in the 1932-33 Holodomor Famine-Genocide was installed in 2014 on the Riverview Walk in downtown North Battleford. The project was undertaken in 2008 by the Battlefords Ukrainian Canadian Cultural Council (President Paul Kardynal). The monument’s design is international in scope and is a replica of the Monument to the Victims of the 1932-33 Famine (Holodomor), which stands in St. Michael Square in central Kyiv, Ukraine. It was built in 2008 by Vasyl Polishchuk, who immigrated to Canada in 2007, with assistance from Sergii Murai. The monument is made of steel, is approximately 3 metres (10 ft) tall, 1.5 metres (5 ft) wide and about 10 centimetres (1 inch) thick.
Пам’ятник на спомин про мільйони людей, які загинули у 1932-33 рр. в Україні в часи голодомору-геноциду був встановлений в 2014 році в центрі міста Норт-Бетлфорд, на Риверв’ю набережній. Проект був розпочатий в 2008 році Радою українсько-канадської культури у Бетлфордах (президент Павло Кардинал). Дизайн пам’ятника є у повному розумінні міжнародним, оскільки він - репліка Пам’ятного знаку жертвам Голодомору 1932-22 років розташованого на Михайлівській площі в центрі Києва, в Україні. Пам’ятник був споруджений у 2008 році Василем Поліщуком, котрий іммігрував до Канади у 2007 році. Допомагав йому в роботі Сергій Мурай. Пам’ятник виконаний зі стальної плити близько 3 метрів (10 футів) висотою, 1.5 метра (5 футів) шириною і близько 2.5 см (1 дюйм) товщиною.
HISTORIC HOLODOMOR STATUE ON GROUNDS OF SASKATCHEWAN LEGISLATURE UCC Regina held its Holodomor statue dedication ceremony on May 12, 2015. The statue, called “Bitter Memories of Childhood”, is an exact replica of the one at Ukraine’s National Holodomor Memorial in Kyiv. It is the work of sculptor Petro Drozdovskyi. Over 200 people were in attendance to show their support, including many from out of town. Those in attendance were moved by the words of Gregory Akulov, son of parents who survived the Holodomor, who recounted the experiences of his parents about what it was like to live during those dark times. The project was initiated by the late Edward Lysyk. He envisioned the statue as a centrepiece in Regina’s Wascana Park and felt it would assist others to learn about the Holodomor Ukrainian Famine-Genocide. The Ukrainian community of Saskatchewan is very appreciative of the support of the Saskatchewan government to make this initiative become a reality in an important location on the Legislative grounds. The Wascana Centre Authority is also acknowledged for their assistance in getting the statue in place. This community initiative has been made possible through many donations along with major funding from UCC Regina, UCC Saskatchewan’s Hromada Legacy Fund, SaskCulture and SaskLotteries.
ІСТОРИЧНА СТАТУЯ ПАМ’ЯТІ ЖЕРТВ ГОЛОДОМОРУ НА ТЕРИТОРІЇ САСКАЧЕВАНСЬКОЇ ЛЕГІСЛАТУРИ 12 травня 2015 року відділ Конгресу Українців Канади в Реджайні провів церемонію відкриття статуї. Статуя «Гіркі спогади дитинства», створена скульптором Петром Дроздовським, є точною реплікою статуї, що знаходиться на території Меморіалу пам’яті жертв Голодомору в Україні, в місті Київ. Більше 200 людей, в тому числі багато приїжджих, виявили свою підтримку і були присутні на відкритті. Слова Григорія Акулова, сина батьків, котрі пережили Голодомор, особливо зворушили присутніх. Він поділився спогадами своїх батьків про те, як було пережити ті страшні часи. Цей проект був ініційований покійним Едвардом Лисиком. Він хотів бачити статую центральним компонентом парку Васкана у Реджайні та вважав, що це допоможе іншим дізнатися про український голодомор-геноцид. Українська громада Саскачевану дуже цінує підтримку Саскачеванського уряду в реалізації цієї ініціативи та встановленні статуї в такому важливому місці на території Саскачеванської Легіслатури, а також дякує управлінню Центру Васкана (Wascana Centre Authority) за підтримку у встановленні скульптури. Ця громадська ініціатива стала можливою завдяки багатьом пожертвам, а також за вагомої фінансової підтримки відділу Конгресу Українців Канади у Реджайні, Фонду громадської спадщини при КУК Саскачевану, SaskCulture і SaskLotteries.
