Open-concept spaces free up options Embrace illusion with exposed style Jacqueline Louie For Postmedia News Casual, comfortable, informal living is all about having wide-open spaces in the home. An open-concept home can give the illusion that a space is bigger than it actually is. It’s fabulous for entertaining and it makes it easy for families to spend time to g ether, whether someone is preparing dinner, doing homework or having a relaxing conversation.

Spend time together I n n ewe r h o m e s, t h e majority of floor plans are open concept, encompassing the dining room, kitchen and living room. “It allows your space to be multi-purpose. Having a sense of openness caters to everyone’s busy lifestyle,” says Alana Humphreys, show home and product solutions manager at Sabal Homes by Hopewell. “If you’re someone who likes to entertain, if you have young children and want to keep an eye on them while they’re doing their homework and if you entertain frequently, then open concept is an ideal configuration.”

Opening up Instead of many small spaces with a warren of separate rooms, builders are creating a few large open spaces in the home. Small kitchens have given way to large kitchens open to the great room, while the great room has replaced the formal living room and dining room. “It’s just much more conducive to the way people

Open-concept space in a home is a casual and functional lifestyle choice, says designer Natalie Fuglestveit.

“Open concept all came about as a result of people wanting to use their space more.” Janice Robertson live and use their space now, having everything in that one area,” says Janice Robertson, senior design consultant at Jayman Built. “Open concept all came about as a result of people wanting to use their space more. They wanted the space in the home to be more functional, making the floor plan much more flexible.” M o re a n d m o re, n ew homes are completely open concept, to the point where

builders are opening up aspects of the home they wouldn’t have in the past, Robertson notes. You’ll find open-concept floor plans beyond the main level. Builders are now designing new homes with very large master suites, in some cases with huge walk-in closets that are very much open concept, quite often open to the ensuite.

Even with an open-concept plan, it’s important to define separate areas within your home.

Open Keep personal needs, lifestyle in mind Continued from F1

Creating definition Even with an open-concept floor plan, it’s still important to define separate areas within a home. According to interior designer Natalie Fuglestveit, who does contract design for Sabal Homes by Hopewell, the best way to make each area distinct is through the use of a variety of elements, including lighting, subtle architectural and ceiling details and even furniture placement. “With open concept, the goal is to keep certain elements throughout very consistent, whether it’s with accent colours flowing throughout the space, drapery and texture, cohesive textiles or finishes,” she explains. “Those are things you could do to keep everything cohesive throughout the space.”

Balance and flow It’s also about balance. This means anchoring one side of the room with certain colours or design motifs and on the other side of the room echoing the colours and design elements, “so that things carry throughout.” Fuglestveit also advises keeping flooring consistent throughout a space to avoid having a lot of flooring transition lines breaking up and separating the space. Open space in a home is a casual, functional lifestyle choice, Fuglestveit says, noting that whether or not you choose an open-concept home will depend on your family’s needs. “By having open concept, you can see what is happening throughout the space and see who is coming and going.” Open concept is not necessarily for everyone. Some people will prefer a more traditional layout, with a formal dining room and separate kitchen. “You need to consider how you operate in your home,” Humphreys says. If there are any drawbacks to having an open floor plan, it’s that people sometimes tend to worry about clutter, she adds. “It’s something to be mindful of. In some ways, more of it is on display in an open-concept space.” Also, if someone cherishes their sense of privacy — for instance, if one person prefers to sit and read

In newer homes, the majority of floor plans are open concept, encompassing the dining room, kitchen and living room to create more space.

“By having open concept, you can see what is happening throughout the space and see who is coming and going.” Natalie Fuglestveit quietly while another family member likes having the television turned way up — an open-concept floor plan might not be the best option. “It really does go back to your own personal needs and lifestyle,” Humphreys says.

An open-concept floor plan might be a challenge for those who worry about clutter — it’s out in the open.

Time to lighten up The Washington Post Drippy, dreary winter got you down? Time to brighten with ideas both practical and fanciful. Here are some ideas: A little glitter never hurt! “Fold” pillows from John Robshaw Textiles, embroidered with metallic thread, are $125 to $175 US (pillow inserts separate) from Johnrobshaw.com. Daylight plus privacy? To p - d ow n / b o t t o m - u p sheers, from companies like HunterDouglas, deliver. And designer Tricia Huntley says h av i n g yo u r w i n -

dows professionally cleaned makes a miraculous difference. Brighten that dark corner with a long, narrow mirror, such as the Ming mirror, $620 at Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams stores or at Mgbwhome. com. Tiling the interior surround of a window with mirror or mirror-finish porcelain tiles allows more light to reflect into the room. Glittery Nest Birchwood Pine and Holiday candles double their glow when set atop a mirror; $34 each at Neim a n M a rcus stores and Neimanmarcus.com.

‘Fold’ pillows from John Robshaw Textiles embroidered with metallic thread can add a little glitter to brighten up your winter decor.

The fireplace: not so good for heating, but great for atmosphere. Potpourri fire-starters from the 400-year-old pharmacy Santa Maria Novella (santamarianovellausa.com) make for quick combustion when set under logs, four for $55. Restoration Hardware’s Starlit Trees lit up the holidays, but Washington designer Joseph Ireland says he leaves his three-footer in place “for months.” Hard to argue. The trees are $32.99 to $249.99 at Restorationhardware.com.

lucky bamboo

The little green plant with a lot of power Lee Reich The Associated Press The New Year is still young so let’s continue to welcome it in — with some lucky bamboo. At this time of year, this plant appears in supermarkets and plant stores. It may or may not be lucky, but bamboo it ain’t. Lucky bamboo does look a lot like bamboo. The jointed stalks are typically one-half to three-quarters of an inch across, with a tuft of strappy leaves sprouting either from their tops or from the side of one of their upper joints. Sometimes the leaves have yellow stripes, and on some plants the stalks spiral around rather than continuing straight up. However, lucky bamboo — or Dracaena braunii or Dracaena sanderiana — is part of the lily family. Bamboos, on the other hand, are very large grasses.

Arranging for beauty and happiness Stalks are sometimes offered loose, but the plant sitting on my desk is a decorative arrangement of three stalks, one about six inches high and the other two each about four inches high, bound together with a gold ribbon and planted in an Asian-style pot. According to feng shui, that ancient art of harmonizing our surroundings, my little plant is a positive

Lucky bamboo can grow to six feet high or more. To keep it at its more charming, petite height, you can trim it. New leaves will sprout from one of the joints near your cut.

periods with the bottoms of their stalks in plain water or supported in pebbles and water, which should be changed periodically, once or twice a week. Lucky bamboo is sensitive to chlorine and fluoride, so rainwater or well water would be best, or at least tap water that has sat out for a few hours. A plant growing in soil needs to be watered like any other houseplant.

Easy care With such supposed powers, lucky bamboo is a plant well worth caring for. Fortunately, it’s very easy to grow. Light? No problem. Lucky bamboo will survive quite happily in relatively low light. Too much is more likely to do it harm, resulting in water-soaked splotches on the leaves. Fertilizer? No problem. Lucky bamboo can go for a

viding evidence of fertilizer burn. Watering is a little trickier, but only marginally so. Plants will survive for long

And speaking of houseplants ... That’s what lucky bamboo is — one of a common spe-

cies of houseplant known as dracaena, corn plant or dumbcane. The name “dumbcane” comes from what happens to your mouth, because o f ox a l at e c r y s t a l s, i f you bite into this plant, so don’t. Left to its own devices, a dracaena plant can grow six feet high, or more, but the large plants no longer have that intimate charm common to Asian gardens and plants. Recapture that charm by merely lopping the plant back to its charming height. New leaves will sprout from one of the joints near your cut. (You can’t do this forever; the plant will keep growing back to its charming height, but along the way the stem will grow uncharmingly fat.) If you want to make the growing stem curl around in a spiral, arrange it to see light from only one direction, toward which it will grow, and then rotate it as needed. If you prune the plant, don’t throw away the pieces of stem you cut off. They can be used to make new plants by merely immersing their bases in water or potting soil. Group the stalks together as you wish: three stalks for happiness, five for wealth, seven for health, or 21 for a powerful all-purpose blessing. — With files from Postmedia News

make it right

Wondering if you should trust referral websites? mIKE HOLMES Make it Right

I recently heard about a contractor who left a trail of half-demoed homes because his renovation company went belly-up. His clients are mad; so are his crew and the sub trades. Unfortunately, this isn’t new. What’s different about this case is the contractor was featured on a referralsite — a website listing different service providers accompanied by customer reviews. Everyone wants to blame the contractor, the website and the positive reviews. Some people are even claiming the good reviews were fake. Did each one of those factors contribute to dozens of homeowners making bad decisions? Absolutely. But the homeowners are responsible too. They played the biggest part because they

hired the guy, and if they had done just a little bit of digging they would have seen the red flags. For example, a contractor asks for 30 per cent of the total cost upfront. You’ve got to be kidding me. No good contractor needs more than 10 per cent to start a job, especially if all they’re doing is demo. When you sign a contract with your contractor it should have estimates of all the different materials and sub trades they will be using. But the only thing that first payment should be paying for is your contractor’s time, their crew’s time (labour) for demoing, and whatever else they might need for demo, such as disposal bins or special machinery. If demo gets underway and it turns out your home has a hazardous material, such as asbestos or mould, that needs to be handled in a special way to remove it, that will cost extra. In that case, both you and your contractor sign off on it, and it’s clear as day why you’re paying more.

The Holmes Group

Referral sites can be good tools, but they are just a small part of the research. And I don’t care if a contractor has a million stellar reviews. Any contractor that needs more than 10 per cent of the job upfront needs cash fast. You have to ask your-

spoke to the client myself, asked them 101 questions, and then went to see their work. One thing to keep in mind is that good, experienced contractors don’t need referrals. Maybe when they’re first starting out, but even then all they really need are a few good jobs under their belt, insurance, integrity and a network of pros they know and trust, then word gets around. Before they know it, they’re booked six months in advance — at least. We all want the easy way out, quick fixes. But there are no short cuts to hiring the right professional, whether it’s a contractor, bricklayer, dentist or surgeon. You have to do your homework. You can’t hand it off to anyone else, and especially not a website. You are responsible because you’re the one on the hook if it all goes down the crapper. self why would a contractor need a huge chunk of cash for work they haven’t started? Ask the contractor too!

It’s your money. You have every right to know what it’s buying. Some contractors might tell you they need to order materials or do special custom work and that’s why they need 20, 30 per cent of the total cost upfront. Guess what? Most good contractors won’t order materials until after demo because what you discover during demo can change everything. The homeowners should have researched the referral site as well to determine how service providers get on there. Are they recommended by other pros in the industry? Does the website do background checks on them, inspect their work, speak to references, or make sure they have a good track record, including financially? Who writes the reviews? I don’t trust what I read. I trust what I see. Referral sites can be good tools, but they are just a small part of the research. And I don’t care if a contractor has a million stellar reviews. The only ones I’ll believe are the ones where I picked up the phone and

Living walls bring the outdoors inside Rebecca Keillor For Postmedia News Bringing the outdoors indoors is not a new concept; humans have kept houseplants since the time of Egyptian Pharaohs, if not before. But what is relatively new (a couple of decades in Europe and half this in North America) is the push to replace our dull grey urban facades with lush green vertical gardens and living walls. Vertical gardens, first introduced in Europe by French inventor Patrick Blanc, have inspired many, like Vancouver living walls and design company Green Over Grey. “More and more people are moving into concrete environments in the city and we have to find innovative ways to connect with nature. To bring back nature into our cities,” says Patrick Poiraud, design consultant and principal at Green Over Grey. “If you’re surrounded by beautiful plants, trees and greenery, you feel this connection with nature and then want to protect the natural world.” Along with Canadian bu s i n e s s p a r t n e r M i ke Weinmaster, who holds a master’s degree in environmental engineering, the duo have created the world’s tallest interior living wall in Desjardins’ head office in Quebec and the largest exterior living wall in North America, spanning both sides of the motorway at Surrey’s Guildford Town Centre. “It’s something that not a lot of people are aware of, but you have thousands of plants that have evolved to grow vertically in nature, without soil,” says Poiraud. “When you walk along the seawall in Vancouver you will see that those cliffs are covered with vegetation. You even have trees that are growing vertically from the cliffs and they’re just growing in a thin layer of moss. There’s no soil. Our system is just recreating that system.” Though the green roof trend has taken off in North America, vertical gardens and living walls have yet to hit their stride here, says Poiraud. “Green roofs is a way bigger industry and you see more and more of those,” he says. “Toronto passed a bylaw a few years ago requir-

the pair wanted to develop products that were accessible for everybody, no matter what their lifestyle or budget. Their first product, the

living frame — which contains live plants that are fed through a water reservoir and wick system, with an indicator that lets owners know when to top up the water — proved so popular in Canada that they went on to develop upside-down planters, magnetized potters and moss art frames (in which the moss is not alive, but preserved, so perfect for those who travel a lot but still want greenery on their walls). ByNature recently installed a 320-square-foot moss wall in the Yaletown of fice of tech company Slack and a living wall with close to 200 live plants in the Financial Strategies head office on West Broadway. Having plants around has proven to be incredibly beneficial, says Collay. “It improves productivity at work, reduces the number of absentees or sick leaves and people are more creative in general,” he says. “The plants do also improve indoor air quality and they’re beautiful.” Beautiful indeed, says Tassy de Give of New York’s S p ro u t e d H o m e, wh i ch launched 10 years ago in Chicago, opened a Brooklyn branch eight years ago and has become, thanks in part to a New York Times article, regarded as terrarium experts. “Terrariums are basically just potted plants in a glass vessel,” says de Give. “They can be open or closed. Open you can do succulents, ferns and mosses, there’s a lot of different options, but enclosed vessels generally do better with more woodland plants like ferns and mosses because it kind of creates their own ecosystem.” For esthetics alone, people love having them around, says de Give. “It’s a nice way to view a plant because it’s more like a specimen. You’re looking at it through glass, rather than the plant being out of the pot, so visually it’s just another way to look at nature,” she says. Kokedama (traditional Japanese moss gardens, in which plants are enclosed in moss balls, instead of containers) and floral terrariums have also become popular in New York, says de Give. “A lot of times people like terrariums, but they want more flowers, it could be for an event or something. So cut flowers are put in tubes of water and enclosed.”

Security top travel concern in India

Student settles flash card fiasco PHILADELPHIA — A university student detained at a U.S. airport for five hours in 2009 over Arabic language flash cards in his pocket that included the words “bomb” and “to kill” has won a $25,000 settlement from the Justice Department. The settlement with Nicholas George, now a Google programmer, also includes more training for police. Georg e, then 21, was studying Arabic and had visited several Mideast countries through a summer study program.

Natalie Obiko Pearson Bloomberg NEW DELHI — Don’t move alone, don’t go anywhere at midnight and don’t get into a vehicle without first taking a photo of the licence plate with your mobile phone. India plans to distribute the advice to visitors in a list of “dos and don’ts,” according to Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma. The move, along with plans to clean India’s streets, follows a scourge of high-profile gang rapes in recent years. “Definitely the two issues which we have not been able to address are cleanliness and security,” Sharma said this week. “We are concerned about that. India will be more clean and secure.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking to double the number of tourists to India by 2017 as he looks to revive Asia’s third-biggest economy. He has swept streets in public, promoted women’s safety and made it easier to get visas, allowing for spontaneous trips that were once all but impossible. Tourist arrivals in India fell sharply in the months after the 2012 gang rape and murder of a student on a moving bus made global headlines. Over the past three years, growth in arrivals has averaged six per cent, compared with 10 per cent over the prior decade, according to Tourism Ministry statistics. Other plans to improve women’s safety include a crisis hotline in 12 languages and taxis equipped with GPS locators, Sharma said. By 2017, India wants 14 million visitors a year who spend more than 2 trillion rupees ($32.6 billion), almost double the $18 billion that foreign investors poured into the nation’s stocks on average each year since 2010. “Something can be done and should be done to bring more tourists,” Sharma said. “We need to make the world aware of really how incredible India is.” India’s 7.4 million tourists lags far behind Asian pow-

Even tiny, landlocked neighbour Bhutan logged the world’s fastest tourist arrival growth rate between 2007 to 2012 by offering what India couldn’t: pristine Himalayan air, low crime and a litter-free landscape. “Your children talk about going to India, but they turn their nose up at us because they think it’s dirty,” Modi said Nov. 19 in Fiji. “I’m going to make such a country your children will want to come and see.” Half of India’s 1.2 billion people defecate outdoors, the highest number in the world, soiling the landscape from rural villages to seafront promenades abutting luxury hotels. Inadequate sanitation costs India more than $50 billion a year, including the losses caused by disease, fouled water and missed tourism, according to a World Bank

W h at I n d i a i s d o i n g t o at t r a c t v i s i t o r s ■■Make visitors safety conscious by providing a dos-and-don’ts list ■■Address hygiene concerns by cleaning up India’s streets ■■Offer a crisis hotline in 12 languages for female tourists in trouble ■■Equip taxis with GPS locators ■■British, Spanish, French, study in 2010, the most recent estimate available. Narrow, potholed highways lengthen road trips, while century-old rail tracks laid by the British mean “express” trains crawl on average at 50 kilometres per hour. A web of taxes levied on cars at state borders, in hotels and at restaurants drive up costs. India’s share of global tourist traffic has languished at around 0.5 per cent for almost two decades. To boost that, Modi nearly quadrupled the number of countries eligible to apply online

Chinese and Italian nationals to be added to 43 nationalities eligible to make online visa applications (that number itself is the result of nearly quadrupling the eligibility in November) ■■Government expected to this summer green-light the commercial operation of four new airlines for visas on arrival to 43 in November. By the time five more are added — Britain, Spain, France, China and Italy — the program will cover 62 per cent of arrivals, Sharma said. “That could be a gamechanger,” said Ravi Kumar, founder of Periplus Travel Pvt. in Delhi. “We were losing out a great deal because half the world welcomes Western tourists with open arms. Some would come without even thinking to apply for a visa and get sent back.” Sharma, who is also junior

minister of aviation, said the government plans to grant approval by August for four new airlines to begin commercial operations to help boost connectivity. Travel and tourism contributed 2.2 trillion rupees ($36 billion) to India’s $1.9-trillion economy in 2013, KPMG said last year. The World Travel and Tourism Council projects this to rise by 12 per cent each year over the next decade, it said. Even so, incidents such as the kidnapping and gang rape of a Japanese tourist as she was dragged across three states by captors in December underscores the uphill battle Modi faces to draw more visitors. India ranked 74 among 140 global economies on safety and security parameters, according to the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013. “Hygiene and women’s safety are issues that need to be tackled,” said Kumar, the travel agent. “When they are, more people can be persuaded into visiting.”

BEIJING — Chinese police said Friday they’ve arrested five people in connection with a phoney bank that used bogus offices and tellers to bilk depositors out of $32 million. More than 200 customers were caught up in the scam based in the eastern city of Nanjing, according to a statement on the local police’s microblog. Most were business owners attracted by promises of high interest rates on deposits. Police said the scammers had all the accoutrements of a real state-owned bank, including uniformed staff.

Killings may be linked to elections ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast — Ivory Coast has raised the alarm over a wave of child murders that may be connected to presidential elections in October. At least 18 children were kidnapped and murdered last year in what appear to be ritual killings, Sandrine Kraidy, director of child protection at the Family, Women and Children Ministry, said Thursday. Most victims were between five and 10 and all were found with severed limbs or heads or missing organs. Some people in Ivory Coast believe human body parts can be used to create wealth or political influence, Kraidy said.
