Double-duty furniture stays relevant PAULA MCCOOEY POSTMEDIA NEWS

Children’s spaces have come a long way since the days of clunky beds and busy wallpaper borders in primary colours. Companies have awakened to the needs of modern families on the hunt for interesting furniture and decor that is not only stylish, but also multi-functional and free of toxic chemicals. It’s a shift so strong it has been highlighted for two

years running at the influential Interior Design Show in Toronto. Parents are “becoming more design savvy and investing more in their kids’ spaces,” says show organizer Karen Kang. That view is echoed by Ying Liu, owner of Fab Baby Gear in Ottawa. Just because you may be starting a family, it doesn’t mean you have to have a “kiddie look” with cartoon characters peeking from every corner of your home, she says. “You don’t have to turn your house into Disneyland. Parents typically don’t want those characters in their house, they want nice design.”

RESOURCE FURNITURE

A condo efficiently provides both a play space and a fun bedroom with space-saving furniture from Resource Furniture. A wall bed becomes a funky city skyline behind a child’s sofa that stores toys, while a shelving unit includes a fold-down desk that can be tucked out of the way for more play area.

Open the door to your worry-free new home STU NIEBERGALL The vast majority of Regina residents enjoy the benefits of home ownership. For those who are entering the home-buying stage of their lives, home ownership is something they have dreamt about, planned for and are proud to be achieving. When people begin to think about buying a home, they often start their search in the resale market checking out what is available for used homes in Regina’s existing neighbourhoods. They see a vast choice of homes that are already built and lived in, reflecting not theirs, but another family’s lifestyle, and tastes, dreams and desires. More than likely, that home has lived through a few iterations of renovations over the years, some of which may have been done pro-

fessionally and others undertaken as someone’s “DIY” project. And, if there were not a lot of renovations already undertaken on the home, then you know that home is likely ripe for needing repairs or updating of some kind. When looking for a home, you can open the door to another possibility — the option to start fresh and build new. Nothing beats the value of today’s new homes. The quality of construction has never been better, and professional new home builders offer more choice, more features and more service than ever before, all at competitive prices. If you are considering a home purchase, you owe it to yourself to explore the benefits of buying new. Everything is new. It is hard to describe the feeling of “new.” Simply enjoy it — along with the knowledge that everything is chosen by you to fit your lifestyle and your preferences.

Totally up-to-date construction A brand new home is built to the latest codes and standards, using

modern building practices, products and technologies. For you, that means solid, lasting quality throughout — both what you can see and what you cannot.

Financial predictability Buying new makes it easier to manage your household budget. You know what your fixed housing costs are, and you do not have to worry about sudden expensive housing repairs or replacements for many years.

After-sales service Once you are in your new home, you still have a backup because your builder is only a call away if you have any concerns or questions. Professional builders have a customer service program and established followup processes, and will tell you clearly what to expect after move-in.

Warranty Professional new home builders provide third-party warranty on their homes — a great reassurance for new home buyers. In addition, many of the products used in the

home are warranted by the manufacturers beyond the lifespan of the builder’s warranty. I am confident if you take the opportunity to look at a newly built home, you will have no problem finding the right home for your family. New homes are designed for today’s lifestyle, with bright open spaces and lots of windows, well-appointed kitchens, great rooms for family together ness and cozy areas for quiet relaxation. Many standard plans can also be adapted to your specific needs. New homes are rich in design detail — from the drama of columns and wall niches for artwork, to simple, understated elegance. The choice is yours. No home is complete without your personal touch. While builders’ practices vary, they all leave room for you to create the final look of your home. You choose the cabinets, flooring, tiles, lighting and other finishing components. With a new home, you get what you want, from the very beginning. And that’s just part of the picture. Just as important is what you

cannot see, but will experience every day — lower energy costs, better indoor air quality, and a very comfortable living environment, thanks to state-of-the-art construction and systems. Go to www.reginahombuilders. com to see what builders are offering in Regina’s new and existing neighbourhoods. There you will find the resources to guide you through the new home buying/ building process, plus Regina’s most extensive list of professional builders who have completed the Certified Professional Home Builder Program and who carry third-party new home warranty. Then visit model homes, talk with professional new home builders, and let them show you how to attain your housing goals and what a new home can offer you. So, open the door to your new home. Get the facts and consider. Enjoy the long-lasting benefits of a brand new home, today, and for a long time to come. Stu Niebergall is president and CEO of the Regina Region Home Builders’ Association.

IKEA

Flexible spaces that offer lots of storage and keep technology needs in mind are key. Ikea, for instance, looks for spots to hide an outlet strip to charge devices.

Get longer furniture life with pieces that grow with your child, like the Oeuf crib that converts to a toddler bed.

Kids Furniture for the ages CONTINUED FROM F1

That translates into cleaner lines and palettes compatible with a couple’s existing furniture, she says. But also they want decor that has lasting power, like the Canadianmade Monte glider, a comfortable high-quality nursery chair that’s equally at home in the baby’s room and the living room. Chocolate brown had been the hot neutral colour for a child’s room, but now it’s all about grey hues, soothing creams and soft pastels, says Liu. And while the owl has been a ubiquitous character in recent years, the fox, raccoon and hedgehog are starting to edge out the wide-eyed bird. “Modern (animal) designs are more silhouettes of animals or objects and the colours tend to be more pastel, more simple lines.” Colour co-ordination and decor are key when pulling a baby room together, says Pennie Chen, owner of Baby EnRoute. But parents should also consider adaptability because the room should easily morph from a nursery to a child’s space, she says. The European Oeuf line of stylish, eco-friendly products, includes a crib with integrated change table that can convert to a stylish toddler bed, for example. Today’s children also need flexible spaces to accommodate evolving technology such as videos, games, and, of course, homework. “One of the biggest changes

is the demand for furniture that does double duty,” says Challie Stillman, design director for Resource Furniture in Toronto. The company specializes in European multi-functional fur niture for families who are expanding when their space is not. Bunk beds that include sofas, twin beds with desks and extra storage, or simply bedroom furniture that folds up and out of the way for more play space are popular choices.

Ikea keeps technology in mind when designing new furniture, says spokeswoman Alicia Zoffranieri. “The reality is that children have more technology options today than they ever did before, and furniture must reflect that.” IKEA’s Nordli bedside table, for instance, features a hidden spot for an outlet strip to charge devices. “It’s very competitive,” Liu says of today’s market.

MAKE IT RIGHT

Semi sense and sensibility MIKE HOLMES Make it Right

CRATE & BARREL

The Lounge sectional from Crate & Barrel comes in various components that allow for custom configurations.

From dungeon divans to daily divas JEFFREY FISHER FOR POSTMEDIA NEWS

Q I have never been a fan of

sectional sofas. We didn’t have one growing up, but I always think of them as basement furniture. My girlfriend and I recently moved into a loft and it appears our standard sofa and chairs have been swallowed up by the space and now we’re contemplating whether to add another sofa or sell what we have and get a (gulp) sectional sofa. Any thoughts? A I used to feel the same as you do about sectionals. I had always strongly disliked them, then I transitioned into placing one or two for clients, and now I’m contemplating one for myself. I’m not sure if it’s an aging thing (with my increasing desire to be surrounded by comfort) or if sectionals have come so far in design that I can no longer ignore them. Both, I’d say. I agree that whenever we hear the word sectional we typically think of roundedarm pleather beasts in basements and bachelor pads. However, sectionals are no

longer design’s dirty oversized secret; they now take pride of place in living rooms and great rooms everywhere. You mention your current furniture being “swallowed up” by your loft; I interpret this to mean the room is large. Before you decide whether it’s another standard sofa you need or a brand new sectional sofa, ask yourself the following questions: “Do I enjoy afternoon naps on our current sofa?” “Is our sofa large enough to cuddle on while watching TV?” “In a pinch could a friend sleep over on our sofa?” If you’ve answered no to at least two of these questions, you may be ready to Kijiji your current sofa and incorporate a sectional. (My sofa falls short on all the above self-mandated criteria, hence my current acceptance of the idea of a sectional at my home.) Large spaces can be challenging to furnish because, as you mention, furniture can get lost. And if you start to fill up your loft with another sofa and additional chairs, it can start to look as cluttered as a used furniture store, especially if your din-

ing table and chairs are in the same open space. A sectional provides plenty of seating (with any luck you can use your current chairs), and clearly delineates the living area from the dining area without crowding the room with furniture. The Lounge sectional pictured here from Crate & Barrel (crateandbarrel.ca) marries a left and right sofa with a corner unit, though the full online collection offers other components including a chaise and ottoman. If additional seating is a priority, you may want to forgo the chaise extension, knowing the configuration shown in the picture provides plenty of stretch space for nap time as well as proper back support. And though the Lounge sofa is transitional in styling, sectionals today run the gamut from traditional to ultra-modern. Once you make peace with the idea of placing a sectional in your new loft you’ll have no trouble finding one to suit your tastes and size requirements. Good luck. Send your decor question to askjeffreyfisher@gmail.com.

Renovations can cause a lot of stress, not just for you but also your neighbours. This is especially true if you live in a semi-detached home. The work you do on one side of that common wall can affect the house next door, especially if the work involves structure, such as underpinning and anything involving the floor and ceiling joists that tie into the common wall. Just drilling can cause cracks in the lath and plaster or drywall next door. So, at what point do you get your neighbours involved? It’s good practice to let your neighbour know renovations are happening — just as a courtesy and to help keep the relationship between you in good standing. I’ve seen major feuds between neighbours last for years because they didn’t have a five-minute conversation about the work they were planning. It also depends on the kind of work you plan to do. If you’re just replacing the cabinets or a countertop it’s not essential to get the green light from your neighbour. But if it involves structure, electrical or any mechanics that could affect their home, you should definitely let them know. In fact, you might have to so you can get the proper permits for your renovation. When you apply for a permit the city will tell you if you need to inform your neighbours or if they need to sign off on anything. Every municipality is different

ALEX SCHULDTZ/ The Holmes Group

Homeowners living in semidetached homes should notify their neighbours of any renovations, especially if it affects the structure. so call your local building authority to make sure. Some cities might even require you to get a permit for common walls, or a party-wall permit, which is an application you fill out after you’ve informed your neighbour about the work. By filling out the application, you’re essentially saying your neighbour is aware of the renovation and is fine with it. (And yes, you will be in big trouble if you fill out the application and they don’t know about it.) If you live in a semi-detached home and it turns out you do need your neighbours to sign or agree to something and they don’t, you will not be able to get the proper permits you need for the work you want done. Don’t consider skipping the permits; that’s probably the worst thing you can do. You would put your safety, your house and your neighbours’ at risk — and you’re on the hook for everything, plus damages. Your neighbours can also call the city and tell them you’re work-

ing without permits. And that means big trouble for you. What if the tables were turned, and suddenly one day you hear people hammering next door and machinery. Do you say something? Again, it depends on what they’re doing. It’s easy to tell if they’re making major changes — a big disposal bin might be outside; lots of materials are being thrown away; many tradespeople and workers are coming to the property; construction goes on for days. Small renos and upgrades don’t take long; they shouldn’t last more than a couple days. If it’s a major reno there should be a permit on the window. You can call the city and give them the permit number to find out exactly what kind of work is going on next door, and whether you should be concerned. If you want to bring someone (for instance, a contractor, engineer or home inspector) in to check out the work and if it’s affecting your home, you take on that cost. It might be worth doing, but don’t expect your neighbours to pay for it. A good rule of thumb is if there’s going to be noise, vibrations, fumes or dust that will affect your neighbour’s living space, notify them. (Also, some municipalities have noise bylaws.) Even paint fumes can be an issue, especially if there are small children, an expectant mother, or someone with respiratory problems. The bottom line? Communication is key, so talk to your neighbour to make it right. Watch Mike Holmes on Holmes Makes It Right on HGTV. For more information visit makeitright.ca.

GARDENING

Herbs thrive in winter indoors KATHERINE ROTH THE ASSOCIATED PRESS During this season of short, dark days, indoor herb gardens offer welcome greenery and fragrance, as well as adding zest to cold-weather stews and soups. “In the winter, even indoor plants won’t be doing much, but an already established herb plant can thrive quite happily in a sunny window,” said Sonia Uyterhoeven, who teaches herb gardening at the New York Botanical Garden. “Easy herbs to grow inside are basil, chives, parsley, oregano, sage, thyme, mint, cilantro and bay,” she said. “If you bring lemon verbena inside for the winter, it will drop its leaves. But just cut it back hard and in a month it will look good again. It’s fragrant and really lovely. Rosemary can do OK, but needs time to adjust to lower indoor light and should be given two weeks to transition first.” For rooms with limited light, parsley, chives and mint are quite forgiving, she said. Basil, oregano, rosemary and sage, all Mediterranean plants, generally do better with much more sun. Most herbs are happiest with six to eight hours of sunlight a day. “The biggest mistake people make is underestimating how much light herb plants need,” explained Leda Meredith, who teaches about herbs and herb gardening at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. “Your basil plant is not going to love you for just two hours of sunlight in the morning. You have to remember that to a plant, light is food.” If light is a challenge, fluorescent light is full-spectrum, works well on plants and is

much cheaper than plant lights, she said. Ginger root is another wonderful, easy and oftenoverlooked option for indoor gardens, said Meredith. “Ginger is a great idea, and the long glossy plant leaves are very attractive. Florists use it a lot in arrangements. Just get a ginger root from the grocery store, chop it into oneinch chunks, and plant those in a pretty good-size pot with just an inch of potting mix on top, leaving several inches between each piece of ginger. That’s it,” she said. “Start watering them and, after a couple months, you’ll realize that the whole top of the pot is ginger root. They form horizontally, not vertically, and you can harvest what you want,” she said. Ginger plants do well with anything from full sun to bright indirect light most of the day, but are pretty tolerant, she said. General rules to help kitchen gardens thrive in winter include making sure pots are sufficiently large; herbs almost always need to be repotted in containers two to three times the size they came in. “The more space they have to grow, the better they’ll do,” Uyterhoeven said. “Around 70 degrees (21 C) is ideal for most herb plants, and placing a bowl of water beside them will give them a little extra humidity,” Uyterhoeven said. She and Meredith warned against overwatering and over-fertilizing indoor herb plants, which should generally not be watered until the soil just below the surface is dry. They tend to lose their scent and taste if given too much fertilizer. Plants should be rotated periodically to ensure all sides

Clustered mountain mint (Pycnanthemum muticum) and other herbs such as chives and thyme are easy to grow indoors. are exposed to sunlight, and they do best when planted in a combination of potting soil mix and compost. They also “love a good haircut,” according to Uyterhoeven, and can be cut back by a third to a half periodically.

STYLE AND DESIGN

Tile trends include artifice and artistry Tile has a rich and varied history in decor, from Roman floor mosaics to majolica to Delft ceramics to Mexican terracotta. These styles and more continue to inspire artistry. Many of the newest collections of ceramic and porcelain tile were on display this fall at the five-day Cersaie international exhibition in Bologna, Italy. Some of the trends:

Master impostors Across the show, faux finishes ruled. What seemed to be barnwood or other timber planking was actually porcelain. Manufacturers can now produce tile that looks — and even feels — like wood, marble, granite or cement, but it is thin and lightweight. The application advantages are obvious: A 20-foot slab of slim porcelain printed to look like stone is a lot easier to make and install than the real thing. It can be used on kitchen islands, walls and even ceilings, and is easily cut to accommodate plugs or faucets. Advancements in digital printing have taken faux finishes a long way from earlier versions that looked unrealistic and one-dimensional. Now the detail is more precise, the image is embedded deep in the tile, and the surface texture is transformed. In the U.S., the Reclamation collection from Crossville, based in Crossville, Tenn., is comprised of an urban-industrial mix of cement and tiles that look like salvaged wood in colorways with names like Steel City, Cotton Exchange and Tobacco Road. Serenissima Cir, based in Casalgrande, Italy, got hold of a palette of brick from Prohibition-era Chicago and used it to create a tile collection that looks and feels like time-worn brick, right down to the original maker’s “Chicago” stamp. Metallic glazes are also evolving. You’ll see patterns with a subtle brush of coppery glitter, while others have dramatic gold, copper and silver finishes — especially striking on 3-D tiles. Antiquing gives mirrored tiles a mercury-glass quality.

Unusual sizes Tile has typically come in standard sizes, squares and rectangles measuring between four inches and 12 inches. But larger versions up to 24 or even 36 inches are now available, and the faux-wood ones resemble planks.

Dwell Patterns has collaborated with Heath Ceramics, of Sausalito, Calif., on a hip-looking collection that incorporates a diamond shape and two different hexagonal ones, available in glossy or matte finishes in a broad colour palette. At Cersaie, hexagons and triangles small and large were shown in earthy hues like cream, mocha, mud and charcoal. Unica by Target Studio’s Origami collection added subtle textural patterns to tone-on-tone black, white or grey tile in shapes evoking the artistry of Japanese paper folding. Ragno’s booth offered an intriguing way to use both their Rewind hexagonal tile and Woodplace faux wood; the different tiles married in the middle with a seamlessness that would have been impossible with ordinary tile and real wood. Another fresh idea was Mirage’s XGone series of hexagonal tiles designed by Javier Deferrari and Lavinia Modesti. Several sizes of hexagonal tiles include some that are notched to connect to others; the resulting pattern, in an array of complementary tonal hues, had a modern-art vibe.

Neoclassical and oriental tapestry and lace patterns tur ned tile into elegant wallpaper in the Onice and Wallpaper collections at the Marazzi booth. The company also showed an oversized vintage floral in a new way, as a ceiling-to-floor accent on an otherwise solid-colour wall, again evoking paper or fabric wallcovering. Ancient Mediterranean motifs printed on mattefinish tile in faded, organic hues bridged the centuries. Panaria’s Memory collection recalls Provencal paver patterns of the late 1800s.

Sicis, an Italian company known for its mastery of the mosaic tile, shows the Cosmati collection of marble and Murano glass tiles for floors or walls.

Scottish studio Timorous Beasties has collaborated with California-based Cle, and this collection melds traditional damask motifs with ink blot patterns.

The Writer Graphics series from Ariana features an elegant yet edgy graffiti tile, an unexpected counterpoint to the textured, cement-like, large scale ceramic tiles. Ariana’s Portland 325 series references the chalk-rich powder used to make cement.

Old world

And Tagina’s Terre Nostre collection echoes the pavers of Umbrian medieval villages. You can find similar, smaller-scale versions at cementtileshop.com. Ceramica Bardelli featured the work of London designer Robert Dawson. He took the classic Willow porcelain design, deconstructed its chinoiserie elements and printed them on large-scale tiles. The effect is as if an enormous china plate had been shattered, then affixed to the wall.

Tile as art canvas Ascot has launched Game of Fifteen, a series of tile

designs honouring contemporary art. Keith Haring’s radiant baby and running figures pack graphic punch in black on glazed white ceramic. ABK’s Do Up collection includes an image of a contemporary geisha and tiles printed with faux-spraypainted graffiti a la Banksy. In a collection called Portland 325, ABK’s Ariana group took inspiration from the walls of an abandoned factory, transforming graffiti into elegant art tiles with iridescent finishes. Sicis showed the possibilities of mosaics by creating wall panels embedded with

butterflies, stars and flowers. The vibrant reds, blues and golds were achieved with minerals like copper and lapis. Scottish wallpaper studio Timorous Beasties is moving into tile design through the tile studio Cle, in Sausalito. Medieval damask motifs are combined with ink-blot patterns to create stylized designs that are hand-lithographed onto limestone and marble tiles. Cle showcases several innovative tile artists in its online shop. Finally, at Modwalls, you’ll find mosaic tile made of sliced, recycled wine corks, and pennies.
