Good hues to start the year off right Big range in colours for home decor KIM COOK THE ASSOCIATED PRESS For 2015, the hot colours in home decor range from yummy ice cream pastels to a few deep, saturated hues.

PASTELS

The pastels include blush, sky blue, vanilla, lilac and pale peach, hues traditionally associated with tropical or desert climes. But they work in northern light, too — just ground them with darker shades like charcoal, chocolate or navy. Mint and shell pink might seem lightweight or juvenile at first glance, but the way they’re being used gives them some gravitas. A task lamp; a mid-century-style chair; a bookcase — rendered in one of these hues, a room instantly looks Right Now. Mints to consider in-

clude Behr’s Mountain Mint and Pratt and Lambert’s Glacial Green; check out Pratt and Lambert’s Coral Pink and Behr’s Secret Blush for a gentle yet sophisticated soft pink.

CORALS

Each year, paint companies and colour trend gurus assess which hues will be hot in fashion and decor. Many choose a ‘colour of the year.’ Coral Reef, a vibrant pinkorange, is Sherwin-Williams’ pick. Debra Kling, a New York-based colour consultant, thinks it’s a regionspecific hue. “It feels more suitable for South Beach, the Southwest or the South Pacific,” she says. Jackie Jordan, colour marketing director for Sherwin-Williams, says the colour embodies a cheerful approach to design that’s a hallmark of 2015. She suggests pairing it with white, black or floral hues like lush green or deep violet to make it really sing.

The COTY kitchen demonstrates good use of the colours Hubbard Squash and Coral Reef. Coral is one of this spring’s colours, and Sherwin-Williams has picked Coral Reef as its colour of the year. The result is a lighthearted yet sophisticated look, a tropical vibe, but one that also looks good in the northern light we get in Canada.

C O M M E N TA R Y

We shouldn’t pay extra when told how to build STU NIEBERGALL With Friday the first day of spring, we are beginning to observe the annual migration of Regina travellers returning home from their winter vacations in warmer climates. Even if you did not have the opportunity to get away this winter, you most likely know someone who did. They have been in places like Cuba, Mexico, Dominican Republic or Jamaica, to name a few of the most popular destinations. When lying on the beach and soaking up the sun, or enjoying that one extra margarita or mojito, it is total relaxation in paradise and not unusual for people to ask themselves the question, “Why do I not live here?” Imagining what a simpler lifestyle might look and feel like compared to fighting winter’s icy grip

back home, is where my thoughts often wander to. At some point, reality kicks in for me and I recognize that many of these tropical vacation countries, although maybe not at the bottom of the list of standard of living, are, in fact, Third-World countries. Yet, we Canadians love to flock to these winter refuges and pay a significant amount of money for accommodations there. I would suggest most Canadians are not experts on the building codes, but I think most of us can appreciate that Canada has some of the most stringent and well-developed building codes in the world. Yet we are perfectly comfortable to stay for weeks in accommodations at these other locations that would not even come close to meeting Canadian building standards. Those new resorts and hotels, if built here in Saskatchewan, would have a stack of orders to comply with and possibly with stop-work orders all over them. My point is not to discourage Saskatchewan individuals and families from travelling to great

Spring Guilford

To calm things down, consider complementary shades of soft grey, driftwood or butter yellow. Patinated brass and medium wood tones would also be pretty accompaniments.

GUILFORD GREEN

Benjamin Moore has gone with Guilford Green, a soft hue that some decorators and designers see as too pale while others tout its versatility as a ‘standard, go-to green.’ Framed with crisp white, Guilford Green gives off a pretty, garden-room vibe; add deeper floral tones like peony, daffodil and iris to enhance the botanical feel. Undertones of grey and brown make it a perfect colour against just about any wood, creating a restful backdrop for a kitchen, nursery or sunroom, and it’s a good exterior hue, too. Check out Farrow & Ball’s Breakfast Room Green, a similar shade.

BLUES

These will also be strong this spring in decorative elements and room colour, evoking locations as diverse as the South Pacific and the Pacific Northwest. There’s global influence with indigos while the navies have a preppy complexion. Behr’s Solitude and Vintage Velvet, and Benjamin Moore’s Blue Danube and Harbor Fog are all attractive. Glidden’s top colour for 2015 is a beachy, intense Caribbean Blue. Another blue getting buzz is Pittsburgh Paint’s colour of the year, Blue Paisley. Some designers think it’s pretty but not especially ‘new’ since it’s been punctuating the popular grey palette for a couple of years now. Nonetheless, it’s a colour with legs. You’ll see it and a deeper teal in accessories and textiles, and as accents on smaller furniture pieces. It can lend a mid-century esthetic to trim upholstery and woods like pecan and walnut that speak to retro style but also reference classic taste.

right here in Regina. Maybe what the three levels of government and their administrations need to consider is whether their constituents really want ever-increasing levels of protection and regulation at any cost. We clearly don’t expect that level of standard in the buildings that we stay in when travelling south for the winter. I would suggest that the governments adopt policies that net the financial impact of regulations. If a regulation is found to have significantly increased the cost of housing for Canadians, then governments need to find an offsetting mechanism to mitigate the cost, which could take many different forms to, for example, reduce the GST thresholds, reduce building permit fees or remove a redundant standard. On another note, as we begin the second day of spring, don’t forget to make your way to the Canada Centre Building at Evraz Place March 26-29 for the 39th annual Regina Spring Home Show. Get fresh and innovative ideas at one of the largest home, renovating, landscaping

and lifestyle shows. This ultimate showcase in indoor and outdoor living brings in hundreds of professional exhibitors and exciting celebrity guests like Carson Arthur and Jo Alcorn from HGTV’s hit show Critical Listing and the infamous HGTV’s Paul Lafrance of Decked Out, Deck Wars and his new hit show Custom Built. Take advantage of the opportunity to see and speak with professionals from a massive selection of the finest home improvement, renovation and landscape companies all in one place at one time. Bring your ideas, plans and questions and get the expert advice you need. The Regina Spring Home Show is the ultimate showcase for indoor and outdoor living. It’s more than just a home show — it’s where ideas come to life! I can assure you, whatever your home improvement project, you will find everything you need to renovate, redecorate, build your dream home or create exciting and practical living spaces indoors and out at the Spring Home Show. It’s the show for you and your home.

destinations all over the world, but to suggest that in Saskatchewan our current building codes provide excellent protection and that the ever-increasing level of protection through evermore stringent building codes now comes at a significant cost. Planning and design costs have more than tripled in Regina since 2006. Compliance to ever more stringent engineering and design standards, outdated zoning bylaws mixed with development standards and construction specs that don’t align with the city’s new OCP are adding significant costs to the price of a lot. Meanwhile, significant changes to the ways the Canadian Building Code is administered and enforced by city planners and inspectors have added substantial costs to the construction of a new home just since 2011. The reality is red tape, and in some cases the well-intended, but poorly executed regulation, add significant costs to the price of building homes for individuals and families all across the country, including

cated, and pairs stylishly with the new neutrals of grey, smoky teal and black.” Kling said some colours have a mysterious quality “one can’t quite identify — and Marsala is one of them. It draws us in. Not quite brown and not quite burgundy, Marsala lends sophistication and warmth.” She says it’s well-suited to textures and as a saturated hue, it’s something special; she did a velvet chaise for a client in Marsala velvet. While it’s already emerging in some furnishings, appliances and cabinetry, Marsala will likely turn up in much more from retailers come fall; it projects coziness, warmth and luxury.

BLACK

Pratt & Lambert’s colour of the year is Noir, a bold, inky blueblack. Kling calls it sultry and forbidding. A tray ceiling in a master bedroom, painted like a night sky, comes to mind. “I can imagine a lacquered Noir library, dining room or other cosy space used primarily at nighttime,” she says. Griffin loves the bold choice. “Black and deep navy were once seen as the most theatrical colours, the exclusive domains of the uberstylish and certainly not for the faint of heart,” she says. “But 2015 officially heralds their establishment as neutrals.”

POTPOURRI

Finally, watch in the fall, too, for olive green, deep teal, burnt orange and mustard, all punctuating mid-century modern style. Fruity acid versions of lemon, lime and grape will nod to mod, ’70s-era decor.

MIKE HOLMES Make it Right

This week, or March 20 specifically, marks the beginning of spring. That means spring maintenance — the stuff we do to get our homes in tip-top shape for next winter. It also means renovation season is just around the corner. If you have a renovation or construction project you want completed before next winter, get on it now. It’s going to take at least a couple of months to find the right professional, so you better start looking and doing your homework fast; otherwise, you might be looking at putting it off until next year. Re-roofing, upgrading or replacing windows, or regrading are ultimately what spring is about when it comes to home repairs and maintenance. Most people want to jump right into creating their dream backyard in time for summer, renovating the kitchen or a bathroom, or finishing the basement. But you have to think smart. What’s the point of getting the perfect backyard if it’s just going to get trampled over and ruined if you have to fix a crack in the foundation, replace the windows or regrade your property to prevent a leak or flood? These fixes make such a difference in your home, but a lot of homeowners lose perspective as the temperatures get warmer — they get spring fever. That’s when you forget about what’s important, such as upgrading insulation, making sure your attic is well-ventilated and insulated, or making sure the roof is strong and there’s a system that directs water away from your house and its foundation. Instead, many people go with the impulse buys that we need to protect with smart maintenance and repairs — the stuff we all want, like that awesome deck or man cave, modern kitchen, or hot tub. But we should work from the out-

ALEX SCHULDTZ/The Holmes Group

Spring is a good time to scan your property. It might need regrading to help direct water away from the foundation and protect against basement flooding. side in, looking at the building envelope first so that anything we do on the inside is protected and lasts.

Prioritizing spring fixes

1. The most important thing is to

regrade your property. Grading your property with at least a fivedegree slope away from the foundation (that’s one inch slope for every foot) can help protect against basement flooding and leaks. This is the time of year when you’ll start to notice if your property has sunk away from your foundation; build it up, and divert water away.

2. Look for puddling around the

yard. Spring brings April showers, and with all the melting snow it’s no wonder basement flooding is common during this season. If you’re concerned, bring in a contractor you trust as soon as possible. They might be able to give you a temporary solution for the spring thaw so that permanent repairs can be made during summer.

3. Inspect caulking around windows and doors. If it’s cracked,

replace it. There’s a lot of good caulking on the market, but educate yourself so you know what you’re buying. A rubberized exterior caulking moves with the window framing as it expands and contracts due to changing temperatures, so the seal doesn’t break. If there has been a lot of condensation or mould on your windowsills, or cold drafts around them, bring in a window pro. It might be time to replace and upgrade your windows.

4.

And of course, check your roof. From the ground, look for missing, torn, buckling or curling shingles, or shingles with missing granules. These, along with asphalt granules in eavestroughs (you have to clean your eavestroughs too!), are telltale signs your roof needs attention. If you work from the outside in and keep up with regular seasonal maintenance, your home and future renovations will be protected — not to mention, your family too. MARSALA

Colour giant Pantone has deemed Marsala its colour of the year. New York designer Elaine Griffin is delighted: “I think it’s a winner. Red is a colour that we haven’t seen in a while. In this interpretation as a deep-ish wine hue, it’s both fresh-looking and sophisti-

5 simple steps to a greener kitchen ANDREA NEBLETT POSTMEDIA NEWS Even the best-run kitchens can produce enough waste to shock the biggest cynics of green living. And it’s not just food waste to worry about — word is, about one-third of the food produced globally is wasted — there’s also energy, water and product waste to consider. But don’t let the stats or the sheer thought of overhauling your lifestyle overwhelm you. Just a few easy changes is all it takes to curb kitchen waste.

1. Shop often, think small. Tired of tossing out foods

such as vegetables, fruit and dairy? Try shopping for smaller portions twice a week (at a grocery store on your way home to conserve gas) instead of doing your usual weekly one-stop-shop routine.

2. Practise long-term buying. Whenever possible, choose d i s h w a r e, c u t l e r y a n d cookware that has staying power. That means forget cheap plastic containers, plastic forks and knives and cheaper appliances that break down before you’ve even broken them in. And, when an appliance does break down, donate it to a provincial recycling program instead of the local landfill.

3. Think ‘reuse’ before ‘ref u s e . ’ That two-day old pasta or roasted chicken still has some life in it. Perhaps it can be reinvented as a casserole, soup or pie. Stuck for inspiration? The Love Your Leftovers app for i P h o n e and iPad promises to help you “minimize waste and maximize taste.” Another app, Leftover Swap, lets you share food with a stranger. Or, pick up a copy of Kate Colquhoun’s The Thrifty Cookbook: 476 ways to eat well with leftovers.

4. Install a motion-sensing switch. As the most frequently used room in your home, the kitchen is also the most likely place for lights to be left on. Leave the flipping action to a motionsensing light switch, such as the Lutron Maestro Occupancy Sensor, which turns on when a person enters the room and off when they leave. It costs around $20 and is easy to install. 5. Put a lid on it. Cover pots when you’re cooking to keep heat in, quicken cooking time and stop the whole process from being an energy guzzler. Or use a pressure cooker a few times each week; it can reduce energy consumption.

A pressure cooker, like Cuisinart’s 6-quart electric model, can give your edibles the eco star of approval. They can reduce cooking energy consumption by 70 per cent.

Latin American love affair Stories told through bold colours KIM COOK THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The exuberant colours, textures and patterns of Latin American crafts are injecting an easy, comfortable and fun esthetic into home decor. The look includes textured rugs, throws that evoke serape motifs and furniture with an authentically handturned appearance. House & Home magazine recently Johnny featured Chamba designer Heidi Merrick’s Los Angeles home, with cowhide rugs, Bolivian “frasada” blankets used as daybed throws, and spicy hues like orange, m a r i n e blue and pink.

Ralph Lauren Home’s La Hacienda fabric collection includes traditional florals and graphic woven prints in earthy reds and turquoise with punches of black, white and sun-baked brights. It’s not all about the fiesta, however. Mexican Modern is a look characterized by contemporary furnishings and quiet colour, with one or two artisan pieces as counterpoints. New Yorker Katherine Ponte works with indigenous Brazilian artisans to bring sustainably produced traditional crafts to a wider market through her e-shop, Ecostasy. “I’m focused on the esthetics as well as the cultural and environmental context of each piece,” she says. She offers bowls made by hand-tying banana fibre and recycled paper. Tropical vines and herbs are fashioned into trays by the people of the Mamiraua Reserve, in the Amazon rainforest. Slabs of ipe and pequia, two South American hardwoods, are transformed into organic coffee tables. (ecostasy.com) Novica’s fair-trade craft e-

shop features pieces found at local markets throughout Latin America (and in developing countries worldwide). The site not only offers artisans a platform to sell their wares; it also provides marketing and technical support. The craftspeople control the creative, production and pricing aspects, Novica says. Finding a charming and beautifully carved cedar statue at a Lima, Peru, market, for example, Novica’s cofounders, Roberto Milk and Mina Olivera, searched the countryside for the craftsman. Johnny Chamba’s little “Ekeko,” or good luck token, is now on the site. Also at Novica: Peruvian artist Alejandro Chavez uses ceramic plaster to make tiny detailed “retablos” or dioramas depicting daily life in the Andes. Farmers harvest prickly pears; merchants sell blankets and masks in a market. The figures are mounted in wooden chests and can be hung on the wall. And Zosimo Laura weaves soothing, rustic hues of cotton into a striking, contemporary, bird-print tapestry. From Brazil, you’ll find Elizabeth and Eduardo Prado’s fused glass-bead bowls in an emerald green they say was inspired by tropical rain. Leandro Mantesso’s bl a ck - a n d - wh i t e p h o t o graphs of Andean topography and daily life are evocative, and Andre de Miranda’s woodcuts are modern art with heart. Guatemalan ceramic artist Lilyan Benecke offers winsome Margarita daisystrewn tea sets and plates. Fellow Guatemalan Patricio Coroy crafts alder wood into serving trays which are lined with hand-loomed traditional prints under glass. Troops sent to save ‘lost city’ from looters Area popular point for drug cartels PHILIP SHERWELL LONDON DAILY TELEGRAPH NEW YORK — The Honduran president has dispatched troops to protect a ‘lost city’ rediscovered deep in the jungle amid fears that looters could pillage ancient artifacts from the abandoned home of an unknown civilization. There were deep divisions among the expedition team that found the site in the Mosquitia rainforest about whether to remove ancient relics for safekeeping, be-

cause of the risk of looting, or leave them intact. The archeologists in the expedition won the day when they opposed digging up and moving any artifacts to the capital Tegucigalpa, despite the dangers that priceless objects could be lost forever if looters found the site. Chris Fisher, lead U.S. archeologist, argued that the scientific value of the artifacts would be destroyed if they were excavated too abruptly because they needed to be studied in their setting amid the buried remains of plazas and a pyramid. It is believed the inhabitants who abandoned the site at least six centuries ago may be the same civilization that built a fabled White City, also known as the City

of the Monkey God, long sought by Western explorers and adventurers. The team deliberately held back the location of the lost city when its discovery this month was announced in National Geographic, in news that made headlines around the world. Although the Mosquitia is a barely populated expanse of jungle, mountain and swamp, it is also the most popular transit point for drug cartels smuggling South American cocaine north toward the United States. There were fears the location would quickly become known locally, with one Western security consultant on the team predicting looters could reach the site within three days. Others were also alarmed ranchers

clearing the forest nearby for cattle rearing could damage the site. Honduran President Juan Orlando Her nande z has now ordered his army chief to deploy troops to protect a site that is thought to date back to AD 1000 and to have been abanJuan Orlando d o n e d b y Hernandez AD 1400. The first Honduran soldiers were believed to have reached the remote site via a helicopter airlift to a landing scene hacked out of the jungle. But it was not clear how large or effective the force would be. The military has failed to combat the much better-

resourced Latin American drug gangs that use the Mosquitia to land small planes laden with Colombian cocaine on rough airstrips cleared by local hired hands. There are also persistent accusations of corruption against some senior figures in the security forces. The disagreement about what to do with the relics was revealed in a New York Times comment piece by Tom Lutz, an American writer and broadcaster who was part of the joint expedition of U.S. and Honduran scientists, filmmakers, British ex-SAS consultants and local military. “We all agreed about our good fortune,” Lutz wrote. “But we all disagreed about what should happen next.” He agreed with Steve Elkins and Bill Benenson, the

American filmmakers who organized and funded the project, that some of the items should be taken back to the Tegucigalpa anthropology and history institute because of the danger that the site would be looted before it could be properly excavated. But he said that Fisher, a Colorado State University academic, was adamant that the site should not be disturbed, arguing that it was the responsibility of Honduras to guard its patrimony. Lutz said that he hoped the Honduran president’s decision meant that the site “appears to be safe for now.” But he expressed fears that if a permanent solution is not reached, “many of this long-lost city’s secrets will be truly and irredeemably lost.”

Afghan woman killed by mob

KABUL — Afghan police arrested seven suspects after a Kabul mob beat a woman to death, then set her body on fire and threw it into the Kabul River, a police chief said Friday. Police tried to disperse the crowd by shooting in the air, Afzali said, but “reacted too late.” He identified the woman as 27-year-old Farkhanda and said she had been receiving psychiatric treatment for an unspecified condition for at least four years. The incident took place outside Kabul’s famous yellow mosque, the Shah-Do Shamshira. Later, cellphone footage

ang, has infuriated China’s fast-growing Christian population and drawn international condemnation. Bishop Paul Meng Qinglu, the deputy chairman of the Communist Party-controlled Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association, said Beijing had issued an “internal order” calling for an end to the demolition of churches and their crosses. The instructions were “to stop demolishing,” the bishop told Hong Kong’s Ming Pao newspaper. The Catholic leader was told of the development during a meeting of religious

leaders in Beijing, reported UCA News, a news agency. Communist Party officials claimed their one-year campaign was aimed at all “illegal structures” and not just Christian churches. However, building code violations were merely a “pretext” for “a large-scale campaign against churches,” Amnesty International said last month. The initiative prompted violent clashes in usually tranquil places of worship as elderly Christians sought to defend their churches from demolition teams. Last April, thousands of believ-

ers occupied the Sanjiang mega-church in a failed attempt to save it from destruction. Before the bishop’s claims this week, there were hints the campaign was easing. Zhang Mingxuan, the head of the Chinese House Church Alliance, said he was not aware of an official order to stop the campaign, but would welcome such a move. “There are many people who believe in God in China. If they allow the demolitions to continue, it will cause conflict between these people and the country.”

Most of the ivory was being smuggled through Ethiopia to a third country, he says.

State workers diverted eggs HAVANA — More than a dozen people in Cuba have been sentenced to between five and 15 years in prison for conspiring to divert millions of eggs to the black market. Communist Party newspaper Granma said Friday that 18 suspects were convicted and one was acquitted. Prosecutors had sought terms of up to 20 years in the case. Granma reported last week that the suspects included executives of the state-run egg distribution company in Havana as well as accountants, drivers and other workers. They were accused of misappropriating more

Ethiopian gov’t burns ivory ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — Black smoke billowed into the air of the Ethiopian capital Friday as 6.1 tonnes of illegal elephant tusks, ivory trinkets, carvings and various forms of jewelry went up in flames on a wooden pyre. Government officials had started the blaze to discourage poaching and the ivory trade. Ethiopia becomes the second African country this year to burn its ivory stockpile as global efforts increase for the conservation of elephants, a vulnerable species whose numbers are

MBAHE VILLAGE, South Africa — A primary school headteacher who was stoned to death after publicly doubting the power of witchcraft is on course to become South Africa’s first saint. The murder of Benedict Daswa in South Africa’s northern Limpopo region, went more or less unnoticed in the violent final years of apartheid. However, local Roman Catholics kept commemorating his death and held a procession to the scene of his murder on the 10th anniversary in February 2000. Now, Pope Francis has approved the beatification of Daswa, a major step on the path to sainthood. “Role models and heroes are important, even today,” said Patrick Slattery, the former bishop of Tzaneen. “Daswa is a hero because he helped liberate people from internal oppression, the kind that stifles people and makes victims of jealousy and fear.” Africa, with 16 per cent of the world’s Catholics, only has a handful of saints, the majority of them white missionaries from Europe. In the village of Nweli, Daswa’s friends remembered he helped to build the church, ferrying rocks from the river with his pickup truck, and was always the first to arrive for mass. The chain of events that led to his death began in January 1990 when Mbahe village suffered a drought followed by floods. Some huts were destroyed by lightning. The villagers wanted someone to blame and punish, but Daswa tried to exin response to a nuclear attack by the United States. Asked whether North Korea has the ability now to launch a nuclear missile, Hyun replied, “Any time. Yes. … If the United States strike us, we should strike back.” North Korea is thought to have a handful of crude nuclear bombs and has conducted three nuclear tests since 2006. But experts are divided on how far it has come in developing the technology needed to miniaturize warheads so they can be placed on missiles.

Several nights later, as he drove home in the early evening, he found his way blocked by the branch of a wild fig tree. Getting out, he was set upon by a mob armed with rocks. He took refuge in a nearby hut, but emerged when the crowd threatened to burn it down. He was allowed a moment of prayer before they smashed his skull with a club and poured boiling water on his head and face. The village remains split and wary of outsiders. Murders driven by suspicion and superstition continue. Pope F rancis, who is scheduled to tour Uganda and the Central African Republic this year, may visit the village, and land has been set aside for a shrine. for France’s far-right National Front in local voting this weekend, elections that promise to solidify leader Marine Le Pen’s position as one of the country’s leading political figures. Le Pen has been the single most visible presence in weeks of campaigning with a relentless message to voters fed up with traditional parties: We care about you, they don’t. For Le Pen, Sunday’s election for more than 2,000 local councils is an important step in building a grassroots base critical to her ultimate goal: the 2017 presidency. The National Front decries immigration, fears Islam is uprooting traditional France and wants to withdraw from the European Union and euro currency. It’s a hardcore line that Le Pen has successfully turned into a charm offensive for the disgruntled.
