In her first go at publishing, Richardson takes the knowledge and experience she’s gained from over 15 years of producing and hosting lifestyle television series for HGTV (transforming over 300 rooms) and gives it to us in a tips format that is both visually stimulating and easy to follow. Offering small, digestible bits of information, Richardson hopes it will motivate dreamers and doers alike. “I wanted to create a design buffet,” she says. “A book that would of fer a
wide variety of styles and types of homes and a cross section also in ter ms of scope of project and budget of project. One that would really allow any reader to flip through the pages and zone in on which ideas resonate best with them.” Sectioned into 10 easy chapters — one for each room of the house — the book cleverly opens with The Entry and will convince you, if you’re not already aware, of the importance of this area in setting the tone for your home and the little or big changes you can make to get it right. There are 15 different kitchens and 13 different bathrooms ranging in size and style. Renovations in bright, bold colours and patter ns follow those in more neutral palettes. “I don’t presume that everything will appeal to everyone, but I wanted to make sure that there was something in it for everyone; every taste; every style of home,” Richardson says. Decorating ‘Something in it for everyone’ CONTINUED FROM F1 Her hope is that Sarah Style will help people when they’re looking for design inspiration for a room, a feature or a whole house, and also act as a reference guide when consumers get stuck partway through a renovation when a contractor asks them how they would like a specific detail — such as a window trim or choice of kitchen island. “I think that’s where a book is so much more helpful and useful than a TV show,” Richardson says. “Because images on a television program are fleeting and fast moving, and I think having something you can hold in your hand and look at closely and revisit time and time again creates something that is really valuable and a useful tool.” Social media, Richardson says, has definitely opened more channels of inspiration for people. “What I love about social media, like Instagram, is that I get to travel every day by seeing where people are going and what they’re seeing through the style makers that I follow.” Happily, Richardson says, it has also helped foster a more global approach to design that embraces elements from all around the world. “It’s the European approach of respecting the history and the architecture of the home you have and then having the freedom to layer in the style that feels right to you,” she says. Richardson describes her design style as “highly practical” and her book reflects an understanding of people’s busy lives and restrictions. Her advice for people who are thinking of decorating is to do what makes them feel happy (in terms of colours and prints or neutral palettes) but also be realistic about your life. Realistic does not mean overly cautious in Richardson’s world, saying she didn’t put away any of her crystal, china or silverware when her daughters were born, instead teaching them to respect and care for the pretty things around the house.
She readily admits it may have looked quite different if she’d had boys instead of girls. Having children has also not deterred her from having a cream linen couch, which was inevitably covered in red lipstick by her then toddler-aged youngest daughter. “If you prewash them (linen cushion covers) and make them without piping, when the red lipstick incident happens you unzip them, you throw them in the washing machine with a bit of extra detergent, into the drier and within
two hours they were back on the sofa and it was like it never happened.” Natural linen and white denim are the two fabrics she says she can’t live without for price, durability and family-friendly living. Richardson’s HGTV show Real Potential was released for the U.S. market last month, and she has a new show coming out next summer: Sarah’s Cottage Rental, which she filmed this year with her husband, Alexander, and onscreen design pal Tommy Smythe.

Here’s a test for you. People make a lot of assumptions about the kind of materials I prefer — hardwood, cedar, granite, wood frame structures and so on. Let’s see if you’ve been paying attention.
Granite or quartz? Quartz. Granite is great, but it’s porous, so you’ll need to reseal it every year. Plus, quartz is super strong and it’s customized; what you see is what you get. Granite is a different story. Granite is real stone, so each slab is different. The sample you see in the store isn’t necessarily the same thing you’re going to get. And you might need two separate pieces if there’s a bend or curve in your countertop, which means a seam. Hiding it in granite is tough.
Copper or PEX? PEX. Copper is expensive, and that’s why it wasn’t unusual for it to be one of the first items to be stolen during job-site robberies. It’s old school, and if they’re in good shape I wouldn’t want to change them. But PEX — or crosslinked polyethylene — is technologically advanced. It is also easier to install, uses fewer fittings and is more resistant to bursts.
Green or a metal roof? Both. A metal roof will save you money on durability (it can last up to 50 years) and energy efficiency. It’s strong, weather-resistant, fire-resistant, and a top thermal barrier.

Quartz countertops are man-made under intense heat and pressure, making them one of the hardest materials on earth. They do not need to be sealed every year as granite does. A green roof is just smart. It’s great for managing water drainage around the home, it’s low maintenance (uses low-growth greenery, so no mowing) and it’s a natural insulation, which helps keep your roof cool thereby increasing its life. My garage has a metal roof and a section of green roof.
Real hardwood or engineered? Engineered. I love hardwood, but is it low maintenance? Absolutely not. I have a dog, I’ve got grandkids, I’ve got guys (and girls) with heavy work boots stomping through all the time. I need flooring that can take that. Yes, engineered wood can off-gas (mainly the stain and top coat), but some manufacturers do a really good job making sure their engineered hardwood products don’t. It’s about being smart and thinking about what’s practical, given your lifestyle — which also goes for my deck. I love cedar, but my deck is composite wood, again, for durability. Cedar is soft and needs to be cleaned once a year with a mild detergent and stained every two years if you want to keep that “cedar” look.
That’s the commitment you make when you go with cedar. If you can’t maintain it, don’t kid yourself; you’ll be doing more damage than good. Bottom line: If you don’t have the time, go for low maintenance and high durability.
And since the holidays are coming up … real Christmas tree or fake? Real. I remember getting a real tree with my dad every year. It was special. You might think a real tree isn’t green but it is. Tree farms contribute to oxygen and wildlife habitat, and they’re renewable. N o t t o m e n t i o n f a ke Christmas trees have VOCs — volatile organic compounds — and can be highly flammable (choose one that’s labelled “fire retardant” or “fire resistant”). If you go with a real tree, make sure it doesn’t dry out and clean up any needles that fall to reduce fire risk. I saw your column in a publication at my doctor’s office that had a basement kitchen where you used a small stainless steel hood fan. Can you tell me where I can find one? Can you suggest other options? I’m about to start tackling our small kitchen where I’m not even sure we have room for a refrigerator. Thank you. A That range hood was actually just a stainless steel box. We’ll get to that, but let’s start with some other options. In a tight kitchen, where you have upper and lower cabinets, you can use an under-cabinet hood or a microwave/fan combo. Down-draft systems are invisible when retracted, but you’d need a vent pipe from your down-draft blower to the outside, which could mean you’d have a vent run under your floor. There are many colour, finish and style options on the appliance market — from restaurant-chic stainless steel to glamorous glossy white; the choice will come down to which style works best in your home. If, however, you are working on a small-space kitchen with awkward bulkheads, low ceilings or other architectural constraints, a custom stainless steel box could do the trick. In that small basement kitchen, pictured here, we didn’t install upper cabinets on the appliance side of the kitchen to avoid the space feeling cramped. Because of a bulkhead, our ceiling was too low even for the shortest length of a telescoping hood fan; with an electric cooktop, 61 to 76 centimetres (24 to 30 inches) is required between the bottom of the hood and the cooktop (76 cm

The lack of upper cabinetry in this kitchen precluded the use of a large fan hood. or 30 inches for gas). Because we had no cabinetry, an under-cabinet hood wouldn’t have worked for us, and a fan in the wall or ceiling (picture a bathroom exhaust fan) would have looked unfinished. So I had Absolutecustomsteelfab.ca create a stainless steel box to hide a standard under-cabinet hood fan. They disabled the hood light and added an industrialstyle on-off switch to the box. To make a custom box work with your appliances, use the same width and length as your cooktop. The one in the photo has a depth of about 15 cm (six inches). A petite cucina will always look (and work) best when the design is unclut-
tered. Instead of a slide-in range, I chose integrated Nutid appliances to create a streamlined European look. The high-gloss, grey, lower cabinet doors blend with the stainless steel, while the white upper Abstrakt cabinets disappear into the white walls of the storage side of the kitchen. (The appliances and cabinets were from Ikea.) You may also want to consider a cover panel for your dishwasher because the fewer disparate elements you have, the sleeker and cleaner the space will look. Wishing you a smooth kitchen reno. Waste not, want not Clean water is a luxury we take for granted MEGAN COLE THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA — Installing low-flow toilets and shower heads are small steps homeowners can take to save water, but changing daily behaviour is really the key to conservation, says a Victoria expert. “Water is often wasted just through behavioural practices, like running water when you’re defrosting food and running your dishwasher when it’s not full,” says Jill Doucette, director of Victoria’s Synergy Enterprises. “There are actually a lot of ways homeowners can save water just by changing how they operate within their home.” According to Doucette, doing things like making sure laundry machines and dishwashers are full before running them will help reduce the amount of water a home uses every year. Water waste cannot only have an effect on local water tables and the freshwater system but also on a home’s energy bill. For example, the hot water heater is also in use when the hot water tap is activated so homeowners might be paying more for energy just to heat water. Even though there are some economical benefits to saving water, Derek Satnik, managing director and chief innovation officer at Mindscape Innovations in Kitchener, Ont., says Canadians often feel conservation isn’t a priority because they have access to abundant fresh and clean drinking water. “There are financial reasons,
but they aren’t compelling. You don’t save a whole lot of money by saving water,” says Satnik. “Some of it is really at the global level; it is more of a global ethos thing.” Canadians may not have to worry about water, but Satnik says water is already an issue for many countries around the world, and more should be done at home to preserve the resource we have. “As Canadians we need to respect and appreciate that there are lots of places in the world that don’t have what we do,” he says. “For no other reason than our own moral good it makes sense to respect that and behave appropriately, like using water less because we have it, sharing it with people that we care about, and protecting the lakes we have because ours are still healthy when others around the world are ruined.” Like Doucette, Satnik says it’s daily behaviour that needs to change to conserve water. Satnik cites hand-washing as an example. He says even though there is documentation and websites directing people how to wash their hands properly, it is likely unnecessary they need to let the tap run during the entire process. “If you put a big bag under the tap to collect the water while you wash your hands and put your hands in the bag, people would be very surprised how much water we use while we’re washing our hands,” he says. “The simple reality of things is most of us will turn the tap on and then wander around and do things, and then turn the tap off.” Because water is so abundant in Canada, Satnik says homeowners have no idea how much water they use. “Everybody ... knows what it is like to have abundant, fresh, clean drinking water and no one understands the global value of that water,” he says.
