Avoid the holiday cleanup hustle

Declutter, repair and replace

REG31989130_1_1

1. CLEANING BLITZ

JURA KONCIUS THE WASHINGTON POST Company’s coming. It’s time to clean up your act. Getting ready for the holidays isn’t just about registering your online wish list, making your hair appointments at the blowout bar and plotting mantel decorations. It’s the time to take stock of critical home issues, such as whether your toilet flappers are flapping properly. Having family and friends over can be stressful if your house or apartment isn’t clean, organized and welcoming. With the holidays only weeks away, take the time now to do some decluttering, repairing and restocking so you can be confident your place is looking its best. Five experts tell you how.

It goes without saying you’ll want to clean your bathroom before guests arrive. But other tasks need to be tackled. “Early November is a great time to declutter,” says Jolie Kerr, cleaning advice columnist for the website Deadspin and author of My Boyfriend Barfed in My Handbag ... and Other Things You Can’t Ask Martha. One reason to get rid of things, Kerr says, is that “you will be bringing a whole lot of new stuff into the house over the next two months. Make some room for it.” In the living room and kitchen, prime entertaining spaces, get rid of newspapers, magazines, catalogues, mail and old candles. Take everything off your coffee table and mantel and put back only a minimal amount. Clear kitchen counters and wipe them down.

Holiday Plumbing tune-up saves stress teries,” he says. In other words, don’t do it. Peels are also dangerous. “People are making a lot of mashed potatoes, and they cram peels down the sink. You can’t put five cups of peels down there.”

Continued from D1 Remove all the food from your refrigerator and scrub the shelves and walls with a half-and-half solution of vinegar and water. Kerr prefers to use a Dobie pad for this job because it can remove sticky soy-sauce drips but won’t scratch surfaces. For the fridge exterior, use a sponge on a black or white model, or microfibre cloth for stainless. Be choosy about what you put back inside. “You’ll be needing extra room for turkeys and hams and other holiday foods,” Kerr says. Toss expired products. “Be honest. If you haven’t used that weird jelly in the past year, get rid of it.”

2. Dining room chair review

Before all those dining table gatherings, give each of your chairs a test drive. If some of them rock back and forth or feel wobbly, they might need re-gluing — whether they’re 19th-century family treasures or recent buys from Pottery Barn. George Spicer owns Spicer’s, an upholstery and furniture repair business that’s been around since 1957. He says chairs get loose when diners push back from the table with their feet or their back, putting pressure on the backs of chairs and weakening joints. (The proper way to get up from the table, Spicer says, is to lift up the weight of your body and push the chair back with your hands.) Take a hard look at the chair seats. If the fabric looks worn or stained, freshen the chair up with new fabric and maybe some additional padding. If you’re a DIY type, go at it. Otherwise, get a pro. Spicer says you’ll need three to four yards to cover six standard dining chair seats.

3. Fireplace checkup

Even if you’ve already lit the first cosy fire of the season, have your fireplace inspected. Now.

Margaret Hryniuk/For the Leader-Post

Looking forward to cosy holiday gatherings by the fireplace? Be sure to get an inspection done first to check for potential problems like water damage or blockages in the chimney. An inspection can reveal if your chimney needs to be swept or re paired, says Ashley Eldridge, director of education for the Chimney Safety Institute of America (csia.org), a U.S. nonprofit group that oversees a certification program for chimney sweeps. “The inspection is a snapshot of your chimney that could turn up any number of things — birds, raccoons, squirrels, branches, leaves, spider webs or basketballs,” says Eldridge, who has cleaned White House fireplaces for two presidents. “Or they might find water damage in your masonry.” Eldridge has advice for proper and safe fireplace use. He suggests checking your fireplace damper, screen and glass doors to see if they are working properly. Also, know where your fire extinguisher is, and make sure it is fully charged and ready to use: Eldridge recommends a five-pound model with a flexible hose. And

don’t burn wrapping paper or pizza boxes in your fireplace because this can rapidly cause large flames to spill out of the fireplace or go up the chimney.

4. Plumbing tune-up

Plumbing companies get a lot of emergency calls over the holidays, when homes are packed and kitchens and bathrooms are in use almost 24/7. “A lot of things related to plumbing get neglected throughout the year,” says Michael Hartman, co-owner of Thomas E. Clark Plumbing, Heating and Air

Conditioning in Silver Spring, Md. “You’re talking slow drains, shower drains plugged with hair, clogged sinks, toilets that run on and dripping faucets.” You can make a list of issues or have a whole-house plumbing inspection. Here are few cautionary notes: Clogged kitchen sinks are a huge issue over the holidays. “People are doing a lot of cooking and shoving everything down that garbage disposal,” Hartman says, with the two worst culprits being grease and potato peels. “Putting grease down the drain is basically like clogging your ar-

If you have a guest room, store a few spare hangers in the closet and keep a few drawers empty. Also, inspect bedding and towels with a critical eye, says Justin Sonfield, general merchandise manager at the Company Store (companystore.com). Strip the guest bed and wash everything, including the protective mattress pads and pillow covers. Comforters and pillows should also be inspected to see whether they need to be cleaned or replaced. “Just because they look OK and the material still looks good doesn’ t mean they are healthy,” Sonfield says. Dust mites and body oils can build up on bedding. Sonfield says pillows should be replaced every two to five years, comforters every 10. If your guest room mattress is the oldest in the house, consider adding a bed topper — possibly a memory foam or feather bed model — for more comfort, Sonfield says. If sheets look a bit threadbare or faded, invest in a new set of white percale sheets to provide guests with a cool, crisp hotel feeling. He suggests wrinkle-free 300-thread-count bedding, one of the Company Store’s best sellers. Also, if you end up springing for new towels, buy extra washcloths, as those tend to get worn out first.

MAKE IT RIGHT

Wet windows are a warning MIKE HOLMES Make it Right

PLY GEM

In cold climes, modern windows can be coated to allow solar heating to warm up your home in winter.

Windows get eco boost GERALD VANDER PYL FOR POSTMEDIA NEWS Windows are an important part of any home, letting in light and providing views while sealing out harsh outdoor weather. Due to changes that are part of the latest National Building Code — a tested and recommended set of codes that becomes law when a province adopts it — windows installed in new homes will need the latest materials, multiple layers of glass and special coatings for energy efficiency. Glen Janiszewski, director of marketing deliverables with Ply Gem, says compared with windows installed in new homes 20, 30

or 40 years ago, the windows the company manufactures today are much more energy efficient. “The majority of heat loss is going to go through the glass,” he says, which is why windows went from singlepane sliding glass in the old days to double pane and now triple-pane units. Various coatings applied to the glass — layers known as Low E — significantly boost energ y ef ficiency, while the use of an inert gas such as argon in between glass layers further reduces heat transfer. Janiszewski says in very cold climates, the right choice might be windows with coatings designed to allow solar heating in winter, basically giving a home

“free heat.” But, in a sunny locale, the window coatings are designed to reduce the intrusion of solar energy and prevent a home from overheating, he says. Improved comfort might be what buyers of new homes with more efficient windows notice the most. On a nippy winter day, there won’t be the cold draft near a triplepane window that you might have in an older home. Janiszewski says during summer, homeowners will be able to enjoy the real point of a window. “If you have a beautiful home with a fine view, you don’t have to close the blinds to avoid heating up your home.” — With files by Claire Young, Postmedia News

I recently received an email from a homeowner having problems with her windows. The issue is condensation — in other words, wet, “leaky” or “weeping” windows. This occurs when condensation builds up on the inside surface of the windowpane, which can be pretty common during winter. Windows get all fogged up, or sometimes it’s so bad water pools on the windowsill, or on the floor below. Condensation occurs for a few reasons. Sometimes there’s too much moisture in the home, or not enough ventilation. Or, a humidifier might be set too high. Drop it down about 10 per cent and see if the condensation persists. Another problem might be windows that don’t insulate properly. These windows are usually single pane. With bad windows, warm air meets cold and that creates condensation. It can happen in winter or summer: During winter warm air inside the house hits the cold surface of a single-pane window; in summer, cool air inside the house hits glass that’s warm thanks to higher outdoor temperatures. Newer windows are double- or triple-paned. In between the glass there’s air or gas that helps block outside temperatures. This provides an airtight seal, but if that seal is broken condensation builds up between the glass panes. In such cases, the window must be replaced. A professional, like a certified home inspector, can help determine why con-

ALEX SCHUDTZ/The Holmes Group

Condensation on windows can result from too much moisture in the home, poor ventilation, or poorly insulated windows. densation is occurring. The homeowner who emailed me hired an inspector to do a home audit — which was smart. They found that her home was too airtight. Most homes nowadays are built to be very airtight. It’s great for energy efficiency but not for condensation. Homes have to breathe. If air can’t get in, moisture also can’t get out, and that moisture can get inside walls and eat away at structure, leading to rot and mould. One of the first signs is condensation on windows and bubbling paint. We do all kinds of things inside our homes that create moisture and condensation — cooking, taking a shower, even breathing. If you want your home to be healthy you must get rid of excess moisture. During summer, air conditioning or a dehumidifier can help lower humidity. But what do you do in winter? I recommend installing a heat recovery ventilator, or HRV. A c c o rd i n g t o t o d ay ’s building code you must have an HRV if your home is built to be airtight — usually if you have spray-foam insulation. You could open

windows to let in fresh air, but then your home would lose energy, which isn’t good for the environment or your energy bills. That’s why an HRV is smart. It brings in fresh air, conditions it to the temperature inside the house and then feeds it throughout the home so there is this constant supply of fresh air. And because it’s wired to the furnace fan it will also pull stale air out. Some HRVs are set on a timer, so they kick in every so often. Others have a humidistat, which should be installed in a centralized spot in the house, just like the thermostat. It’s usually set at around 35 to 40 per cent. When the humidistat detects there’s too much moisture in the air it will start up the HRV. However, HRVs aren’t cheap. It can cost between $2,200 and $2,500 to have one installed. But if you think about the potential damage that too much moisture in your home can cause, not to mention the health risks, an HRV is a no-brainer. It’s code for a reason. Be creative, make the space your own MEGAN COLE THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA — Tenants face the challenge of how to make someone else’s house their home within a budget and restrictions from landlords, but there are ways they can introduce a personal touch to a rented space. Rental properties seem like temporary housing, but according to interior designer Jenny Martin, a lot of people make renting their lifestyle choice and do it long term. “When a tenant moves into a place, it can be hard to really make it their own without investing a bunch of money into something you’ll be leaving behind,” she says. According to the Victoria-based Martin, renters should consider investing in strategic pieces that can be installed and removed easily when they move out. “People can purchase a feature dining room pendant to be installed by an electrician. The existing one is boxed up

Lighting fixtures are not permanent additions to a rental space, making them ideal for changes. and the two are switched out when they leave,” she says. “You may not want to do things like that if you were renting for a year. It would be better for a more long-term situation.” Building managers and

landlords may have strict rules around what changes can be made to a rental space, but Martin says tenants can add big impact to a space without making permanent modifications. If there are limitations

on painting, the easiest way is to add a pop of colour through furniture, art and draperies. “Spending more time on how your furniture relates to the space is important because you can integrate

colours with pieces of furniture or toss pillows,” Martin says. “A tenant could get a custom or antique mantel to lean against the wall to add some architectural elements.” Even though landlords

can have concerns about their renters making changes to their property, interior decorator Chantelle Butterfield says many are looking to add value to their home. “Tenants just don’t ask their landlords what they are open to,” says Butterfield, owner of Funktional Spaces in Saskatoon. “A lot of landlords are open to free labour as long as it is done well. Landlords are just people; they aren’t monsters. They are looking to add value to their property. (They appreciate) tenants who aren’t abusing the property, but instead are taking pride in the space and adding value to it by adding dollars and some sweat equity.” Butterfield says an easy way a tenant can both make a dramatic change to their rental space and add value to their landlord’s property is by updating the kitchen with painted and refinished cabinet doors plus hardware. While it may seem tenants face restrictions, Butterfield says they are only limited by imagination and budget.

SITTING IN STYLE

The esthetic ascent of accent chairs MEGAN BUERGER THE WASHINGTON POST For designer Betsy Stires, accent chairs are a decorating treat. They’re mobile pieces, easy to move from room to room and one of the quickest ways to spruce up a dull space and express personal style. They add flair. “If a room were an outfit, the accent chairs would be the jewelry,” said Stires, who owns an interior design firm in Old Town Alexandria, Va., called Frog Hill Designs. “It’s the spark. It pops from the rest of the palette, but also ties it all together.” T r a d i t i o n a l ly, a c c e n t chairs are intended to be used only when extra seating becomes necessary, so they tend to be equal parts functional and decorative. That makes them a fun piece to shop for and a great way to experiment with colour and texture. But they can also have deceptively large footprints, particularly those that rock or recline. In apartments and condos where space is precious, finding one that’s stylish, comfortable and lean can feel impossible. But it isn’t. “Accent chairs add so much flavour and character to a room, sometimes you only need one to do some-

La-Z-Boy’s Midtown Recliner, left; West Elm’s Button Slipper Chair, centre; Room & Board’s Celeste Chair, right. thing big,” Stires said. “It can make a statement.” Stires, 52, recently moved from a large home in Great Falls, Va., to a 2,300-squarefoot Alexandria apartment. Her new home is still large for an apartment, so the downsizing wasn’t terribly dramatic, but accent chairs and poufs have been vital for when guests come over, she said. “If you only have room for one big upholstered piece, you have to get creative.” The first step to shopping for accent chairs is determining your spatial constraints. Lisa Scroggins, the retail market manager of Room & Board in Washington, said those in small spaces should look for chairs

that fall between 63.5 and 81.3 centimetres (25 and 32 inches) wide. And although the market is flooded with vastly oversized armchairs, the standard seat depth hovers around a generous 51 to 56 cm (20 to 22 inches) The next step is to figure out what purpose the chair will serve. Is it purely a statement piece that will be pulled out twice a year for parties? Or will friends use it every week when they come over to watch the game? More recreational chairs should be durable, so shop for fabrics such as leather and canvas. Chairs destined for life in the hallway can be more artsy; think of them like practical sculptures you can sit on when you get in a pinch.

Erin Raines, a designer in Brooklyn’s Park Slope neighbourhood, said livingroom seating arrangement is a predicament for the majority of her clients at Space 3 Interiors. “Needless to say, I’ve done a lot of research on small accent chairs,” Raines said. She has a few go-to chairs for problem solving. West Elm’s Button Slipper Chair ($399) measures 63.5 cm (25 inches) wide and straddles vintage and modern design, “so it works with a variety of decor styles,” she said. Room and Board’s Celeste Swivel Chair ($749) is a client favourite and because it’s low to the ground it can visually open or close a seating area depending on which

direction it faces. Ikea’s Poang chair ($69 to $149) is far and away the “household staple,” she said, because it’s affordable, comfortable and lightweight. Raines suggests a moneysaving design hack: Ordering custom slipcovers from Bemz, an online shop that sells covers specifically measured to fit Ikea products. “It’s the easiest way to give your furniture an upgrade,” she said. Comfort is often the No. 1 priority when young people shop for seating, which explains why L-shaped couches and big, cosy recliners are post-college staples. But they’re not practical choices for those renting less than 1,000 square feet. To that

end, many manufacturers and retailers offer furniture lines geared toward city dwellers. Even La-Z-Boy loyalists have hope. Shortly after the recession, the Michiganbased company updated its catalogue to offer sleeker pieces for urbanites. The Midtown Recliner ($849) measures just 84 cm (33 inches) wide and 53 cm (21 inches) deep and trades the traditional chair’s pillowlike silhouette for clean, straight lines. And for those willing to splurge, higher-end retailers such as Design Within Reach and Thos. Moser make slender, modern lounge seating (such as Thos. Moser’s Ellipse chair, $2,475, and ottoman, $675, in cherry). Of course, creative seating solutions don’t have to come in the form of accent chairs. Poufs, ottomans and benches can double as extra seating. Many offer hidden storage and have wheels to make them mobile. Stires has a clover-shaped George Smith pouf in her living room that’s on wheels, so she can shuffle it around as needed. Scroggins said customers often piggyback benches up against the back of a sofa and pull them around when guests come over. “If you shop right, one piece can do the work of three.”

UKRAINE

Short truce a test for lasting peace PETER LEONARD AND JOHN HEILPRIN THE ASSOCIATED PRESS KYIV — A one-day truce announced by Ukraine’s president will serve as a test to see if the fighting in eastern Ukraine against Russianbacked separatists can be halted, a military spokesman said Friday. President Petro Poroshenko’s declaration of a break next Tuesday in the fighting marks a new attempt to revive a September ceasefire that has been violated almost daily. Spokesman Andriy Lysenko said the “day of si-

lence” would demonstrate the degree of co-ordination possible within rebel forces — an apparent reference to reports of schisms among the separatists. Speaking in Basel, Switzerland, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the truce could help build a more lasting peace. Lavrov said it was brokered with the help of Russian military experts at Poroshenko’s invitation and “is linked to create a dividing line between the (warring) parties.” He said he sees an increasing role for the monitoring team from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.

“We will be in contact with both Ukrainian forces and the rebels to persuade everyone to respect the agreements, as well as everything else that was agreed upon in Minsk,” Lavrov said, referring to the little-respected ceasefire agreement signed in the capital of Belarus in September. Separatist rebel leaders have agreed to the truce terms, the Russian news agency Interfax reported Friday. Despite many initiatives, fighting remains intense in eastern Ukraine. Lysenko said Friday that six Ukrainian soldiers had died in the previous day’s combat.

BALKANS

Arrests made in 1993 wartime massacre JOVANA GEC AND DUSAN STOJANOVIC THE ASSOCIATED PRESS OPA TINA PRIJEPOLJE, Serbia — Police in Serbia and Bosnia arrested 15 people Friday in a wartime massacre that traumatized the Balkans and came to symbolize a culture of impunity that still shields notorious wartime death squads and their masters. Prosecutors from the two bitter wartime enemy countries said they worked together to crack the case of the Strpci massacre of Feb. 27, 1993, in which 19 men were snatched off a train at the height of the Balkan conflict. Officers carried out a pre-dawn sweep that netted 10 suspects in Bosnia and five in Serbia, including the brother of a jailed warlord, ex-militia members and a former Bosnian Serb general who commanded the military in the area. “We are now on the path to solve the murder that has been hidden for more than 20 years,” said Serbian war crimes prosecutor Bruno Vekaric. “We have to do it for the innocent victims.” There was no comment from the jailed suspects or their lawyers. T h e q u e s t i o n n ow i s whether the suspects will point to the men above them who ordered the killings, investigators say. If so, they could implicate some of Serbia’s top former and current officials, who were prominent in the war machine of the president at the time, Slobodan Milosevic. While the Serbian gover nment now acknowledges Strpci as a war crime, the killers are still seen by some in Serbia as war heroes. “Many war criminals are still influential in business, politics, police and the ar my,” said Bosnian State Prosecutor Goran Salihovic. The Associated Press obtained exclusive investigative documents in the probe, which is backed by

In February 1993, 19 men were snatched off a train and taken to this gym at a school in the village of Prelovo, eastern Bosnia, beaten and later killed. Police in Bosnia and Serbia arrested 15 people Friday for the wartime massacre.

“MANY WAR CRIMINALS ARE STILL INFLUENTIAL IN BUSINESS, POLITICS, POLICE AND THE ARMY.” GORAN SALIHOVIC the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands. Together with witness testimony, they provide the first detailed look at a tragedy whose wounds fester even today because the killers were not identified and the victims’ families not compensated. The documents and witness accounts say the train made an unscheduled stop at the station of Strpci, a remote outpost in eastern Bosnia on the border with Serbia. A group of Bosnian Serb militiamen identified 18 Bosnian Muslims and one Croat through their names and carted them off. The men were herded into

Inside the gym, the militiamen stripped the captives. Then they beat them with rifle butts. Drenched in blood, their hands tied with wire, the men were taken by truck to an empty house near the Drina river. There, they were shot in the back of the head. The Strpci massacre was part of a conflict that left more than 100,000 people

dead and millions displaced. Although all sides have been accused of war crimes, historians say Serbs in Bosnia and Croatia carried out the worst atrocities in an effort to create an ethnically pure territory. Prosecutors have identified Milan Lukic, one of the most feared Bosnian Serb warlords of the time, as the ringleader of the massacre, which was carefully planned and meticulously executed.

Lukic is already serving a life sentence handed down by the UN tribunal for separate atrocities against Muslims in Bosnia. Those arrested Friday included his brother Gojko Lukic; former close associate Boban Indjic; several ex-militia members and former Bosnian Serb army Gen. Luka Dragicevic, who commanded the military in the border zone. A wartime document issued by the headquarters of Bosnian Serb warlord Gen. Ratko Mladic during the war points to a pattern of collusion between militias operating in the area and the Bosnian Serb leadership. The document ordered all troops in Bosnia to capture any Muslims passing through Serb-controlled territories, suggesting highlevel responsibility in the Strpci abduction. Mladic has been charged with genocide by the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague, along with Milosevic and Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic.

Pair drifted in stormy Pacific for five months WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Two men from Papua New Guinea have told rescuers how they survived almost five months adrift in a tiny open boat in the Pacific by eating raw fish and drinking rainwater. Michael Bolong, 54, and Ambros Wavut, 28, were eventually picked up by a fishing vessel after trying in vain for months to catch the attention of passing ships. The two men were safely landed on Pohnpei in Micronesia’s Caroline Islands. They were said to be suffering from severe sunburn but were otherwise well and have recovered enough to be

Doctor charged in forced abortion ROSENDALE, N.Y. — Police say a licensed anesthesiologist from New York state choked a woman inside a home and forced her to swallow a pill that could cause an abortion after she told him she was pregnant. The sheriff ’s offices say deputies responded Wednesday night to a “no voice” emergency call. Police charged Dr. Thomas Pfeiffer, 44, with strangulation, assault and abortion in the second degree. He was being held Friday on $50,000 US cash bail. The woman was treated at a hospital and released. Police haven’t released details on her relationship with Pfeiffer.

This baby is a big bundle of joy ALAMOSA, Colo. — A woman in southern Colorado has given birth to a girl who tipped the scales at almost 14 pounds. Mia Yasmin Hernandez was born by caesarean section Monday in Alamosa, weighing 13 pounds 13 ounces. She was flown to a hospital outside Denver because she had low glucose levels and trouble breathing. Her father says she’s doing well. Mia’s father, Francisco Garcia, says the newborn’s siz e shocked everyone, including hospital staff. He says, “They were like, ‘Whoa!’ They opened their eyes like they’ve never seen a baby like that.” Four older sisters are welcoming Mia. Garcia says Mia’s mother, Alisha Hernandez, announced: “I’m done!”

discharged from hospital. They said a third person who had been in the boat, named Francis Dimansol, 48, died from severe health problems during their ordeal. It is unclear what became of his body. The islanders are thought to have drifted at least 1,600 kilometres after setting off in July from Lihir island in the province of New Ireland, east of the Papua New Guinea mainland, in a motorboat. The men said they had survived by eating raw fish and drinking rainwater and had weathered a number of severe storms. “We were convinced everyone had given up looking for us,” Bolong told the crew of the Yap Seagull fishing

There is no doubt that after weeks, which turned into months, we were forgotten, except by our families.” The rescue was reported by the Micronesian government information service

on the island of Yap, but details remain scarce. Describing their survival as miraculous, the report said the men were swept out to sea after they were caught in a storm and ran out of fuel making a short trip from Lihir to a nearby island. The men — believed to be construction workers rather than fishermen — were picked up by the Yap Seagull some 190 kilometres south of the remote Kapingamarangi Island on Nov. 23. An island official on Pohnpei said Friday: “They saw passing ships but could not get the message across that they were in trouble. The most we can establish at this stage is that Mr. Dimansol had succumbed to the elements.”

LIMA — Peruvian police have arrested a Mexican man accused of trying to smuggle about three kilograms of cocaine to his country inside the bellies of two St. Bernard dogs. The drugs were placed inside the bodies of the large dogs during an operation in a hotel room, police said. Police veterinarians removed bags of drugs from a male dog named Bombon and a female called Lola. They suffered from grave peritonitis, an infection of the tissue lining the abdomen’s inner wall, as well as high fevers and vomiting. Authorities on Thursday arrested 22-year-old Giussepe Tombolan, who arrived in Peru with the dogs several weeks before.

British al-Qaida recruits jailed LONDON — Two British men who travelled to Syria to join an al-Qaida linked terrorist group have received lengthy prison sentences. Longtime friends Mohammed Ahmed and Yusuf Sarwar from the city of Birmingham north of London received sentences of nearly 13 years on Friday. The 22-year-olds earlier this year had pleaded guilty to one count of preparing terrorist acts. Judge Michael Topolski said the two “enthusiastically” tried to commit acts of terrorism and were deeply committed to violent acts.

Gun battles in Kashmir deadly SRINAGAR, India — Militants in the disputed territory of Kashmir attacked an Indian army camp Friday, triggering a fierce gun battle that left 11 Indian soldiers and six suspected assailants dead, officials said. At least three other deadly attacks were launched elsewhere Friday in the region, where local elections are being held through December. At the Indian army camp, rebels hurled grenades and fired automatic rifles as they tried to enter the camp’s artillery unit.
